So congrats for taking the time to practice. Today we have a beginner episode, focussing on questions.
As usual, we won’t waste too much time talking in English about the theory. But just a short reminder: there are two types of questions in Dutch.
There is the closed question, a yes-or-no question. To form that type of question, you have to put your verb first. Do you play tennis will be ‘Speel je tennis?’ Do you love me is translated as ‘Hou je van mij?’ So the verb and the subject switch places.
It’s a tad more complicated when the verb is split in two, like in ‘We hebben frieten gegeten’, We ate fries. To form a question, take the first verb first, and put the second one at the end ‘Hebben jullie frieten gegeten?’ . Shall we go to school? becomes ‘Zullen we naar school gaan?’
Then there is the open question, which starts with a question word, like wie, wat, waar, waarom, hoe. You put that word first, then the verb, then the subject. ‘Wie ben je?’ Who are you? ‘Waar woon je?’ Where do you live?
When you have more than one verb, the same thing applies here: the second verb comes at the end, or in any case after the most important parts of the sentence? What did you eat yesterday? ‘Wat heb je gisteren gegeten?
So let’s start our dialogue. It’s about a job interview, where the interviewer of course asks all kinds of questions. Let’s listen to the Dutch dialogue first, and then we’ll go over it sentence by sentence, with plenty of time for you to translate and repeat.

Goeiemiddag. Ik ben Ivana. Mag ik hier zitten?
Zeker. Heb je een cv?
Ja, hier is mijn cv.
Kom je uit Bulgarije?
Ja. Ik woon nu twee jaar in België.
Wat heb je gestudeerd?
Ik ben ingenieur elektromechanica.
Waarom wil je hier werken?
Dit is een bekend bedrijf. Een vriendin werkt hier ook.
En ik woon dichtbij.
Waar woon je precies?
In de Langestraat in Tienen.
Heb je ervaring?
Ja, ik heb al drie jaar als ingenieur gewerkt.

Ok, so now let’s go over it sentence by sentence, question by question. As you might have heard, I’ve kept it fairly simple. So even beginners might want to take a stab at translating these sentences. And if you’re on an intermediate level, it’s always good to review some basic grammar and words.
I’ll read the sentence in English, and you try to translate, out loud. Use your voice! It helps anchor these structures in the brain. Then I’ll give you my translation, once slowly, once a bit faster, and you can repeat.
