Hallo allemaal, welkom bij No-nonsense Nederlands. Welcome to No-nonsense Dutch. Today we are going to practice an intermediate dialogue on a topic that many learners of Dutch find difficult: the small but not so innocent word ‘er’.
As you know doubt already have experienced in your Dutch practice, probably to some frustration, ‘er’ is used in different ways in Dutch. Er wordt geklopt, er zijn veel mensen, ik ben er niet vandaag Sometimes it’s used in the same way as the English ‘there’, but not always.

For now, let’s get into our dialogue! I’ve prepared a dialogue with plenty of ‘er’, used in different ways. I’ll read it in Dutch first, so have a listen and try to understand as much as possible.
Then we’ll go over it sentence by sentence and you’ll have a chance at translating first, and then repeating.
Here we go.
Wat is er met jou?
Je ziet er verdrietig uit.
Morgen is er een feestje bij Jarno.
Er komt een clown en er is ook een springkasteel.
Al mijn vrienden zullen er zijn.
Wat is dan het probleem? Ben je niet uitgenodigd?
Jawel. Maar er wordt verwacht dat je een kostuum draagt.
En ik heb er geen.
Dan gaan we er toch een kopen?
Maar er zijn geen winkels open vandaag!
Dat is waar. Ik had er niet aan gedacht.
Wat voor kostuum heb je nodig?
Ik wil graag een elfje zijn.
Ok. Heb je een mooi kleedje?
Ik heb er twee: een roze met bloemetjes en een blauw.
Goed. Hier ligt karton. Ik kan er een kroon van maken.
Ligt er in de keuken nog folie? Dan kan ik er vleugels mee maken.
Ja, ik heb er vanmorgen mijn boterhammen mee ingepakt.
Prima. We maken er iets moois van.
Dankjewel papa!
Waar woont Jarno eigenlijk? Ben je er al geweest?

Ok. Heb je een mooi kleedje? (The correct word is ‘jurk’, but in Flanders everyone says ‘kleedje’. In the Netherlands, this would mean a carpet).
I have two: a pink one with flowers and a blue one.

Alright. So choose one.
Ok. Kies er eentje.
Here is cardboard. I can make a crown out of that.

Yes, I packed my sandwiches with it yesterday.

Not easy, right? Er can be difficult to deal with, but don’t try to avoid it. The more you practise, the more natural it will feel.
