Hi all, welcome back! Welkom terug bij No-nonsense Nederlands. Sorry to keep you waiting, my summer break took longer than expected. I moved house (Ik ben verhuisd), transitioned to a new job (een nieuwe job), and then of course covid visited.
But now I’m looking forward to get back to practising Dutch with you! And today we’re practising some travel vocabulary. As usual I’ve prepared a short dialogue, where you’ll get a stab at translating first and then repeating. Active Dutch practise, that’s what this podcast is about.
Ok, so first I’ll read through the dialogue once. It’s about two people discussing travel plans. We’ve got all kinds of useful words, like booking a flight, luggage, beach holiday… One person is going on an adventurous holiday in the Pyrenees, a mountain range in France and Spain, and the other is flying to Italy.
Let’s listen, and then afterwards we’ll go over it sentence by sentence and you can try and translate and repeat.
- En, ga jij op reis deze zomer?
- Ja, ik heb een groepsreis geboekt.
Ik ga trekken in de Pyreneeën.
We gaan kamperen en wandelen in de bergen.
- Dat klinkt avontuurlijk.
- Ja, vorig jaar ging ik met mijn ex naar een hotel aan het strand.
Maar een strandvakantie is niets voor mij.
- Moet je dan zelf je bagage dragen?
- Ja, behalve de laatste paar dagen, wanneer we in een berghut verblijven.
En de laatste dag maken we een ballonvaart.
- Waw, dat wordt onvergetelijk.
- Ja, ik heb er enorm veel zin in.
En jij?
- Wij gaan naar Italië.
We hebben een vlucht naar Rome geboekt.
We gaan de stad verkennen.
Ik heb al al de beste adresjes in de reisgids aangeduid.
Daarna huren we een auto om naar de kust te rijden.
Daar gaan we drie dagen zeilen.
Onze laatste bestemming is een vakantievilla in Toscane.
Daar gaan we nog een week doorbrengen met mijn familie.
Ontspannen aan het zwembad, zalig.
- Wel, goeie vakantie!

Yes, I have booked a group holiday.

I’m going backpacking through the Pyrenees.
Ik ga trekken in de Pyreneeën.
We’re going to camp and hike in the mountains.
We gaan kamperen en wandelen in de bergen.
That sounds adventurous.
Dat klinkt avontuurlijk.
Yes, last year I went to a hotel by the beach with my ex.
Ja, vorig jaar ging ik met mijn ex naar een hotel aan het strand.
But a beach holiday is not for me/not my thing.
Maar een strandvakantie is niets voor mij.
Do you have to carry your luggage yourself then?
Moet je dan zelf je bagage dragen?
Yes, except for the last couple of days, when we stay in a mountain hut.
Ja, behalve de laatste paar dagen, wanneer we in een berghut verblijven.
And on the last day we’re doing a balloon ride.
En de laatste dag maken we een ballonvaart.
Wow, that will be unforgettable.

Yes, I’m really excited about it.

Our last destination is a vacation villa in Tuscany.

There we’re going to spend a week with my family.
Daar gaan we nog een week doorbrengen met mijn familie.
Relaxing by the pool, heavenly/blissfully.
Ontspannen aan het zwembad, zalig. (*the word zalig is very popular among young-ish people for great, really enjoyable. You won't hear seniors use it but everyone under fifty does.)
