Hallo, dag allemaal, welkom bij no-nonsense Nederlands. Welcome! In today’s podcast we’re going to practice some past tenses.
As you know the format of this podcast is to have you actively translate and repeat; so no long explanations in English, but you practising in a quick and efficient way. This really helps you make progress, especially combined with an app or classes.
Today we’re going to focus on the past simple of what we call ‘weak’ verbs. Weak verbs are those verbs that don’t change vowels in the past tense. So for example, ‘ik maak’ will have ‘ik maakte’ as a past simple. You add either -te or -de at the end: for the plural, that will be -ten or -den.
That’s is opposed to strong verbs; those verbs that DO change vowels in the past tense. ‘Ik ga’ wordt dan ‘ik ging’, for example.
Today, all verbs in the story I’ve prepared for you are weak verbs. So you know what you need to do with the verbs. We’ll do the strong ones in another episode.
Today I don’t have a dialogue but a story, with someone talking about their idyllic childhood on a farm. Listen to the story first, and see what you understand. After that, we’ll go over it sentence by sentence, and you’ll get to translate.
Als kind woonde ik op een boerderij.
Mijn ouders kweekten groenten en fruit.
Ik speelde elke dag buiten.
Ik fietste langs de velden.
Ik bouwde kampen in het bos.
Of ik verzorgde de dieren.
In de zomer werkte ik mee.
Ik plukte de appels die aan de bomen groeiden.
Of ik poetste de tractor.
Van de appels maakten we appeltaart.
We gebruikten alles.
We gooiden niets weg.
Aan het einde van elke zomer organiseerden we een feest.
We nodigden het hele dorp uit.
We dansten en lachten de hele nacht.
Ik probeerde tot ’s morgens wakker te blijven.
Maar dat lukte niet.
Ik droomde van mijn eigen boerderij.
Uiteindelijk trouwde ik met een Amerikaan.
Ik volgde hem naar de Verenigde Staten.
En daar startte ik een olijfboerderij.
Ok, so there will definitely some words that you don’t understand. Don’t worry about that too much. You can always take a look at the transcript if you want to, I always try to include some extra’s there.
Now I’m going to give you the English sentence first. Focus on the verb and the correct past tense. See if you can get that right. Afterwards, I’ll give you my translation, and you’ll get a chance to repeat, twice. Good luck!
As a child, I lived on a farm. (To live can be translated as ‘leven’, but when we’re talking about the actual place you live, we more often say ‘wonen’.)
Als kind woonde ik op een boerderij.
My parents grew vegetables and fruit.
Mijn ouders kweekten groenten en fruit. (from 'kweken')
I played outside every day.
Ik speelde elke dag buiten.
I biked along the fields.
Ik fietste langs de velden.
I built huts in the forest.
Ik bouwde kampen in het bos.
Or I took care of the animals.
Of ik verzorgde de dieren.
In summer, I worked along.
In de zomer werkte ik mee.
I picked the apples that grew on the trees.
Ik plukte de appels die aan de bomen groeiden.
Or I cleaned the tractor.
Of ik poetste de tractor.
From the apples we made apple pie.
Van de appels maakten we appeltaart.
We used everything.
We gebruikten alles.
We threw away nothing.
We gooiden niets weg.
At the end of every summer, my parents organized a party.
Aan het einde van elke zomer organiseerden mijn ouders een feest.
We invited the whole village.
We nodigden het hele dorp uit.
We danced and laughed all night.
We dansten en lachten de hele nacht.
I tried to stay awake until the morning.
Ik probeerde tot ’s morgens wakker te blijven.
But that didn’t work.
Maar dat lukte niet.
I always dreamt of my own farm.
Ik droomde altijd van mijn eigen boerderij.
Eventually I married an American.
Uiteindelijk trouwde ik met een Amerikaan.
I followed him to the US.
Ik volgde hem naar de Verenigde Staten.
And there I started an olive farm.
En daar startte ik een olijfboerderij. (Are olive farms a thing in the US? I'm suddenly not sure...)
