So today’s episode is for those people who already have a bit Dutch knowledge. We’re going to focus on the pronounciation of the ‘g’, the soft g, like we use in Flanders. It’s a difficult sound, because it’s actually not very common across the world. So having trouble with it is perfectly normal, and this episode will help you practise a bit.
I have two short dialogues loaded with g’s. The first one is easier in terms of grammar, the second one a bit more difficult, with different past tenses, regular and irregular. So if you’re a relative beginner, stick to the first; if you like a bit of a challenge or you just want to repeat, go for the second one as well.
I’ll read the first one first, and we’ll do the translating and repeating. Then if you’re not discouraged, we’ll move on to the second one.

Hij zag een grote groep kinderen.
Ze stonden aan een gigantisch gat in de grond.
‘Gilda is in het gat gevallen’, zei een jongen.
Gijs ging gauw een ladder halen.
Met de ladder ging hij in het gat.
Hij greep Gilda vast en ging de ladder weer op.
Bedankt, zei Gilda.
Graag gedaan, zei Gijs.
Yesterday morning, Gijs went outside.
Gisteren ging Gijs ’s morgens naar buiten. (*gisterenochtend of gisterochtend is fine as well)
The air was gray and grizzled.
De lucht was grijs en grauw.
Suddenly he heard screaming.
Plots hoorde hij gegil.
The screaming came from a building.

He saw a large group of children.

They were standing by a gigantic hole in the ground.

‘Gilde fell in the hole’, a boy said.
‘Gilda is in het gat gevallen’, zei een jongen.
Gijs quickly went to get a ladder.
Gijs ging gauw een ladder halen.
With the ladder, he went into the hole.
Met de ladder ging hij in het gat.
He grabbed Gilda and went back up the ladder.
Hij greep Gilda vast en ging de ladder weer op.
