I have a brand new episode ready for you, so you can practice. The aim here at no-nonsense Nederlands is that you get a short, active practice. I don’t do long explanations, I have you translate and repeat. That helps you sharpen your skills and makes you progress faster.

This week's focus is about the past tense of what we call strong verbs. These verbs change vowels in the past tense, like ik keek, from kijken. They are opposed to weak verbs who get -te or -de at the end, like Ik werkte.
I have a good solid practice ready for you on these strong verbs. A whole string of sentences, and they all have strong verbs in them. So you don’t have to guess if they’re weak or strong, they’re all strong here.
If you’re new to the podcast, here’s the idea. I read a text for you in Dutch. Then, we’ll go over it sentence by sentence. I’ll give you the sentence in English, and you try to translate. Then I give you the sentence in Dutch, and you can check if you had it right, and repeat, twice. Try to do this out loud, this really helps activate all those necessary brain bits when learning a language.
Ok, so this text is about cats. It’s about my grandmother’s cat, and the text talks about the kind of things he did. Listen to the text, try to understand as much as possible, you can read along in the transcript if that helps. After that, it’s your turn.
Mijn grootmoeder had een kat.
Het was een lief dier.
Hij lag vaak in de zetel.
Hij keek me dan intens aan.
Het leek alsof hij me begreep.
Alsof hij wist wat ik dacht.
Hij beet me nooit.
Oma liet hem op tafel zitten.
Hij at mee van de boterhammen.
En hij dronk melk uit een koffiekop.
Als ik binnenkwam, liep hij naar me toe.
Dan gaf hij me kopjes.
Hij kon zelf de deur opendoen.
Maar hij ging niet graag naar buiten.
Dat vond hij te koud.
Zelfs als de zon scheen, bleef hij binnen.
Hij ving nooit muizen.
Daarvoor bewoog hij te traag.
