I’ve got an episode for you today that talks about the conditional. You get to practice the conditional, which in Dutch is expressed with the word ‘zou’ or ‘zouden’.
As usual, no long grammatical explanations. I’ve added a link in the transcript, if you would like to study this a bit, but this podcast is all about active practice.
I have a little dialogue ready for you, which you’re going to listen to first. It’s about two people talking about what they would do if they won the lottery.
After that, you get the chance to translate yourself, and repeat the correct translation a couple of times. That really helps anchor these expressions in your brain. It’s a really good way to practice, I promise.
Ok, here’s the dialogue. Listen intently, or follow along in the transcript. After that, it’s your turn.
Heb je het gehoord?
Isabelle heeft de lotto gewonnen.
Hoeveel heeft ze gewonnen?
5 miljoen euro.
Waw. Wat zou jij daarmee doen?
Ik zou direct stoppen met werken.
Ik zou een huis kopen in het buitenland.
In Italië, Frankrijk of Spanje.
Daar zou ik dan elke winter naartoe gaan.
Ik zou ook mijn eigen bedrijf starten.
Ik zou kleren en juwelen ontwerpen.
En die zou ik hier in België laten maken.
De rest van het geld zou ik aan een goed doel geven.
Wat zou jij doen met zo veel geld?
Ik zou blijven werken.
Maar ik zou wel minder gaan werken.
Ik zou een chef-kok in dienst nemen.
Dan hoef ik nooit meer te koken.
En ik zou een groot feest geven voor al mijn vrienden en mijn familie.
Ik zou leren zeilen, en een zeilboot kopen.
En natuurlijk zou ik mijn kinderen geld geven om een huis te kopen.
Alright, now here is the dialogue again, but now it’s your turn. After I have said the English sentence, you try and translate. Do this out loud, it helps your brain to automatize the language. I’ll then give you the Dutch translation twice, and you can repeat. My translation can differ from yours, because I always aim for the most natural way we would say something. But that does not mean yours is wrong.

Isabelle won the lottery.
Isabelle heeft de lotto gewonnen.
How much did she win?
Hoeveel heeft ze gewonnen?
Five million euros.
5 miljoen euro.
Wow. What would you do with that?
Waw. Wat zou jij daarmee doen?
I would stop working immediately.
Ik zou direct* stoppen met werken. (*you could say 'onmiddellijk' or 'meteen', but in Flanders we use 'direct' a lot)
I would buy a house abroad.
Ik zou een huis kopen in het buitenland.
In Italy, France of Spain.
In Italië, Frankrijk of Spanje.
Then I would spend every winter there
Daar zou ik dan elke winter doorbrengen.
I would also start my own company.
Ik zou ook mijn eigen bedrijf starten.
I would design clothes and jewellry.
Ik zou kleren en juwelen ontwerpen.
And I would have them made here in Belgium.
En die zou ik hier in België laten maken.
The rest of the money I would donate to charity.
De rest van het geld zou ik aan een goed doel geven.
What would you do with that much money?
Wat zou jij doen met zo veel geld?
I would continue working.
Ik zou blijven werken.
But I would work less.
Maar ik zou wel minder gaan werken.
I would hire a chef.
Ik zou een chef-kok in dienst nemen.
Then I’d never have to cook again.
Dan hoef ik nooit meer te koken.
And I would throw a big party for all my friends and family.
En ik zou een groot feest geven voor al mijn vrienden en mijn familie.
I would learn to sail, and buy a sailboat.
Ik zou leren zeilen, en een zeilboot kopen.
And of course I would give my children money to buy a house.
En natuurlijk zou ik mijn kinderen geld geven om een huis te kopen.
