So I’ve been staying in too much over the last couple of weeks, so I’m aching to get out and see friends, and maybe experience some culture with them! I love going to concerts and I like to go see plays, so that’s what today’s dialogue will be about. You’ll get to practice a couple of words and phrases related to going out and do cultural stuff together.
As usual I’ve chosen for the Flemish version, for example, the proper Dutch word for cinema would be ‘bioscoop’, but we most often use the French word ‘cinema’.
So, what I’m going to do is I’m going to read out the dialogue once. You try and understand as much as possible. If it’s too difficult still, you can follow along on the transcript.
After that we’ll go over it together, I’ll give you the English sentence first, and you can translate out loud, sentence by sentence.
Alright, here’s the dialogue. Someone is asking a friend to come along to the theater, but the friend is already busy.
Ga je vanavond mee naar het theater?
Ik heb een gratis ticket voor jou.
Dat klinkt goed, maar ik heb al plannen.
Ik ga naar een concert met Jonas.
Aha, een rockconcert?
Nee, klassieke muziek.
Zijn vriendin speelt viool.
Haar orkest treedt vanavond op in de kathedraal.
Er komt ook een koor zingen.
Ok, een andere keer dan.
Ik wist niet dat jij van theater hield?
Ja hoor, ik ga vaak naar een voorstelling kijken.
Ik heb vroeger zelf nog toneel gespeeld.
Naar welk stuk ga je?
Euh… ik ben de naam vergeten.
Maar er doen een paar bekende acteurs mee.
En de regisseur heeft ook al films gemaakt.
Dat doet er me aan denken: ga je volgende week vrijdag mee naar de cinema met Julie?
Welke film gaan jullie kijken?
We twijfelen nog.
Zij ziet graag komedies of romantische films, ik zie liever actiefilms.
Ik zal kijken of ik vrij ben.
Alright, now here is the dialogue again, but now it’s your turn. After I have said the English sentence, you try and translate. Do this out loud, it helps your brain to automatize the language. I’ll then give you the Dutch translation twice, and you can repeat. My translation can differ from yours, because I always aim for the most natural way we would say something. But that does not mean yours is wrong.

That sounds good, but I already have plans.
