Today, we’re going to practice typical phrases from an everyday situation: going to a restaurant. Which I hope you have already done a lot, if you live in Flanders, because we are really proud of our love of good food.
So You’ll get to hear a dialogue in Dutch, listen first, and afterwards, you will get the chance to translate every sentence and/or repeat.
So I’m from Flanders and I speak Flemish Dutch, and in this dialogue I’ve included the very typically Flemish restaurant phrases. In Holland, you’ll hear different ways of saying these things, but this is great practice if you live in Flanders or plan to live here, and plan to take advantage of our rich culinary tradition.
I’ll read the dialogue first and then afterwards we’ll go over it sentence by sentence and you get to translate.
You’ll hear a couple that has made a reservation under the name of Simons – ‘op naam van Simons’, we say in Dutch – and then has some typical exchanges with the waiter, until they finally make their order.
If you’re a beginner, you could look up the transcript first on buzzsprout, and follow along. If you already got some Dutch under your belt, just try to make out what I’m saying.
So, here’s the dialogue.
Goeienavond, we hebben gereserveerd op naam van Simons.
Simons, ja. Volgt u mij maar.
De tafel bij het raam is voor jullie.
Ik breng zo meteen de menukaart.
Kan ik al iets te drinken brengen?
Voor mij een pintje, graag.
Kan u een mocktail aanbevelen?
De no-gin tonic met frambozen en tijm is populair.
Klinkt goed. Zo eentje voor mij.

Alright, now here is the dialogue again, but now it’s your turn. After I have said the English sentence, you try and translate. Do this out loud, it helps your brain to automatize the language. I’ll then give you the Dutch translation twice, and you can repeat. My translation can differ from yours, because I always aim for the most natural way we would say something. But that does not mean yours is wrong.
