Today we’re going to practise some useful words and expressions that I’ll hope you will never, ever need. Our dialogue today is about reporting a crime, a theft. What do you say when someone stole something from you, and you’re telling that to the police.
So you’ll be practising words like those for theft, stealing, witness, reporting, and you’ll be practising the past tense AND questions as well, because of course the police would ask a lot of questions in that situation.
First I’m going to read out the dialogue. You will hear someone approaching a police officer - een politieagent - because her purse - handtas - was stolen in a bar. The officer asks some questions. Then she tells her what she’ll do, and what the victim - het slachtoffer - is supposed to do.
Listen first, try to see if you understand everything. You might want to follow along on the transcript if it’s still too much of a challenge.

Excuseer, agent, kunt u mij helpen?
Mijn handtas is gestolen!
Ik was in café Mundi.
Ik ging even naar het toilet.
Mijn vriendinnen letten niet op.
Toen ik terugkwam, was mijn handtas weg.
Hoe lang is dat geleden?
Een kwartier. We hebben eerst zelf gezocht naar de dieven.
Welke kleur heeft uw handtas?
Het is een grote blauwe tas.
Wat zat er in uw tas?
Mijn portefeuille, mijn telefoon, mijn draadloze oortjes en mijn sleutels.
Zat er veel geld in uw portefeuille?
Ongeveer 50 euro.
Heeft u in het café iets verdachts opgemerkt?
Waren er mensen die zich vreemd gedroegen?
Nee, niet echt. Het was heel druk.
Goed. Ik zal het doorgeven aan de andere ploegen in de buurt.
Ik ga nu in het café op zoek naar getuigen.
Misschien heeft iemand de daders gezien.
U moet ook onmiddellijk naar Cardstop bellen.
Zij blokkeren uw bankkaarten.
Daarna moet u naar het politiebureau.
Want u moet de diefstal van uw identiteitskaart aangeven.
Dan krijgt u een voorlopige kaart.
Hetzelfde geldt voor uw rijbewijs.
Ga nu naar het commissariaat hier om de hoek.
Ik zal hen verwittigen.
Dan weten ze dat u slachtoffer bent.
Dan wordt u onmiddellijk verhoord.
Heeft u een vriendin om mee te gaan?
Voelt u zich goed?
Ja. Ok, dank u wel, mevrouw.

I’ll go to the bar looking for witnesses.

Maybe someone saw the perpetrators.
Misschien heeft iemand de daders gezien.
You have to call Cardstop immediately.
U moet onmiddellijk naar Cardstop bellen.
They will block your cards.
Zij blokkeren uw bankkaarten.
After that, you have to go to the police station.
Daarna moet u naar het politiebureau.
Because you have to report the theft of your identity card.
Want u moet de diefstal van uw identiteitskaart aangeven.
Then you’ll get a preliminary card.
Dan krijgt u een voorlopige kaart.
The same goes for your driver’s license.
Hetzelfde geldt voor uw rijbewijs.
Go to the main station around the corner now.
Ga nu naar het commissariaat hier om de hoek.
I’ll notify them.
Ik zal hen verwittigen.
Then they know you’re a victim.
Dan weten ze dat u slachtoffer bent.
And you’ll be interrogated immediately.
Dan wordt u onmiddellijk verhoord.
