This is a podcast to help you practice your Dutch. You get to translate and repeat after me, to help you get familiar with the language. I speak Flemish Dutch, and try to use the Flemish way of saying things, but Dutch learners who live in the Netherlands can definitely practice here as well.

Today, you’ll get to practise words and expressions we all need at some point: it’s about our hair. I’m going to read a dialogue between a hairdresser and a customer, and you’ll hear the words for curls, bangs, bald, cutting, hairdryer, hair dye and many more. Follow along on the transcript if you’re still feeling a bit insecure. Some of the vocabulary might feel a bit strange, but this is the vocabulary hair dressers in Flanders use, so it’s very, very useful if you live here.
After that, I’ll read out the sentences in English and you can translate and repeat. So here’s the dialogue. See how many words you recognize, and if you understand what they mean.

Vertel eens, wat mag het zijn?
Ik wil graag mijn haar laten knippen en stylen.
Ik heb lang haar, maar het is te saai.
Ik wil wat krullen in mijn haar. Kan dat?
Natuurlijk. Ik zal het opknippen in laagjes.
Zo krijgt u wat meer leven in uw haar.
Is uw haar van nature steil?
Nee, eerder golvend.
Ok, dan heb ik geen krultang nodig.
Wilt u de lengte behouden?
Zal ik enkel de puntjes knippen?
Het mag wat korter, maar niet te kort.
Tot net boven mijn schouders is prima.
Heeft u normaal een middenstreep of een zijstreep?

Alright, now here is the dialogue again, but now it’s your turn. After I have said the English sentence, you try and translate. Do this out loud, it helps your brain to automatize the language. I’ll then give you the Dutch translation twice, and you can repeat. My translation can differ from yours, because I always aim for the most natural way we would say something. But that does not mean yours is wrong.

If you live in Flanders, next time you have your hair cut, be courageous and ask for what you want in Dutch! I know it’s scary, I had to do it in French for a couple of years when I lived in Brussels, and every time I was afraid they wouldn’t understand what I wanted. One time I walked out with orange highlights, but all the other times it was fine.
