This is a podcast to help you practice your Dutch. You get to translate and repeat after me, to help you get familiar with the language. I speak Flemish Dutch, and try to use the Flemish way of saying things, but Dutch learners who live in the Netherlands can definitely practice here as well.

Today, we’re going to practice prepositions. In, out, under, on top of … Now, I know, they’re not the most interesting subject, I find this part of language learning very boring. But then I often get stuck in a sentence because I don’t know them well enough. Once I had to have a conversation in Spanish about where to park my car and didn’t know any prepositions, so it wasn’t a huge success.
Let’s practice them! I have a little text for you. I’ll read it out in Dutch. Tried to make out what it’s about. If you’re a beginner, you can follow along in the transcript.
After that, you get to translate and repeat.
Gisteren zijn we aangekomen bij ons vakantiehuisje in Zoutelande.
Dat ligt aan de Nederlandse kust.
Het huis ligt aan het einde van een rustige straat.
Voor het huis ligt een kleine tuin.
Achter het huis ligt een paadje naar de zee.
Het paadje loopt tussen de huizen en over de duinen.
Zo kom je bij het strand.
Op het dak ligt het nest van een ooievaar.
Tegenover het huis ligt een restaurantje.
We parkeren de auto naast het huisje.
We brengen onze spullen naar binnen.
Daarna gaan we wandelen langs de kust.
Er zijn niet veel mensen meer op het strand.
Er zwemmen nog enkele mensen in zee.
Ik zeg tegen mijn man: ‘Ik duik er ook even in.’
Ik draag mijn badpak onder mijn kleren.
Ik trek mijn kleren uit en loop het water in.
Pas na een half uur kom ik uit het water.
We gaan weer naar huis.
Daar kan ik opwarmen onder de douche.

Yesterday we arrived at our cottage in Zoutelande.
Gisteren zijn we aangekomen bij ons vakantiehuisje in Zoutelande.
It’s at the Dutch coast.
Dat ligt aan de Nederlandse kust.
The house is at the end of a quiet street.
Het huis ligt aan het einde van een rustige straat.
Right before house, there is a small garden.
Voor het huis ligt een kleine tuin.
Behind the house, there is a small path to the sea.
Achter het huis ligt een paadje naar de zee.
The path leads between the houses and over the dunes.
Het paadje loopt tussen de huizen en over de duinen.
That’s how you get to the beach.
Zo kom je bij het strand.
On the roof, there is a stork’s nest.
Op het dak ligt het nest van een ooievaar.
In front of the house, there is a restaurant.
Tegenover het huis ligt een restaurantje.
We park our car next to the house.
We parkeren de auto naast het huisje.
We bring all our stuff inside.
We brengen al onze spullen naar binnen.
After that, we go for a walk along the coastline.
Daarna gaan we wandelen langs de kust.
There aren’t many people left on the beach.
Er zijn niet veel mensen meer op het strand.
A couple of people are swimming in the sea.
Er zwemmen nog enkele mensen in zee.
I say to my husband: ‘I’m going to dive in as well.’
Ik zeg tegen mijn man: ‘Ik duik er ook in.’
I am wearing my bathing suit underneath my clothes.
Ik heb mijn badpak aan onder mijn kleren.
I take off my clothes and run into the water.
Ik trek mijn kleren uit en loop het water in.
Only half an hour later I get out of the water.
Pas na een half uur kom ik uit het water.
We go back home.
We gaan weer naar huis.
There I can warm up in the shower.
Daar kan ik opwarmen onder de douche.
Meanwhile, my husband puts some meat on the barbecue.
Ondertussen legt mijn man wat vlees op de barbecue.
There we are, you made it, nice work! That was not easy, there were some tricky examples in there.
