Speaker:

In this episode, we are gonna talk about Inner Static, that extra noise that comes from overthinking and spiraling and what you can do about it because it's not always as useful as it presents. You ready? Let's do it. Hello, you are listening to the Love Your Life as a Performer podcast. I'm Kelli Youngman and I am the Life Coach for Performers. I help actors, singers, and dancers love themselves and their lives way more. So keep listening to learn how you can love your life, both on and off the stage. Hello and welcome back to the podcast. I would love to talk about our Inner Static today. And I guess to give you a little bit of an update since the last time we talked, it's been my birthday. I'm feeling a ton of new energy that is really grounded and expansive. I also had a meeting with my agents recently to just recalibrate the vision and who I see myself becoming over the next decade, two, three decades of my career. And as I am continuing to embody my vision as an author, a thought leader, as a life coach. It's been really wild and also really uncomfortable at times. And before we get into the episode, which again is coming from lived experience and mastery, something that I was speaking about with to a new friend, they were just kind of asking me how the past few weeks have been. And I said to them, you know, the past few weeks has evolved a lot of intentional learning, and when we are choosing to intentionally learn and grow and fail on purpose, it does bring up a lot of discomfort. And that is the cost of admissions to where you wanna go when you're trying to bridge a gap between who you are and who you wanna become. Because those new decisions are always going to feel new and unfamiliar and to our body and our brains doing new things, right? That is actually always going to trigger our survival instinct, right? Like our nervous system can be and will be activated as we're stepping out into bigger shit and as reclaiming bigger things. Because of course there's visibility, there's, you know, being open and available to other people's judgments and perceptions. And again, when you opt into that growth, what happens is you start regulating your system to hold more. And even though it might be really hard the first time, the second time, it gets a little bit easier and easier and easier and easier. Right? And so again, as I've been going through this intentionally challenging, uncomfortable season of my growth that I 100% opted into, it's also been so fun to witness how different the baseline is and how even among, amidst whatever the right word is, even in the middle of being in the messy middle and being in transition, and you know choosing the hard, the baseline of love, compassion, self love, self trust, and really like partnership in my life with my husband has been so incredible. And if you had asked me years ago if it would've been possible to be so happy as a baseline and so in love and so supported as you are going through just again, uncomfortable change and growth and trying new things and failing, I don't know that I would've believed you or I would've even thought that it would be possible. But that is the reality I've created as I've witnessed and changed my relationship to the hard. Right that actually is in our control, how we experience it. And so I've been thinking and talking about this concept with my clients a lot called the Inner Static. And there's a few reasons why this comes up. And you might relate to it sort of as the, uh. I don't know, the spiral or like all of the thoughts in your head. The, the never ending loop and going round and round in circles thinking about things. Right. You might hear it as that mental noise, that mental chatter. And I wanted to give it this name of the Inner Static because I wanna remind myself and everyone that we are energetic beings. We are spiritual beings. We are energetic beings. And the same way the whole universe came from star stuff, so did we. And so when we are talking about input and output, which again is a, an idea I've been playing with a lot, and I don't know if I've shared it on the podcast yet, but when we're thinking about our energetic output to be a match for what we want to receive, all of that comes from the frequency of which we're vibrating. And if you put someone's hand or skin or like looked at our skin underneath a microscope, right? Like, that sounded so weird. But like if you actually looked at our DNA, right? It's matter. It's energy. It's more space than matter. And so yeah, the frequency of the energy we're putting out is important and it does have to align to what we want to receive in order to receive it. So I'm sure I have said this on the podcast, and again, I'll just say it again, is that the same way we have to be on a certain radio station to hear a certain radio station, that's the frequency, right? That's setting the dial. The same way we have to pick up a phone and dial someone's phone number, we have to have the right output to get and connect with who we're trying to get on the other end, right? So the same is true with our energy. And so when we have all this additional noise in our mind, inner static, I want you to think about that we're actually jamming up the frequency. Like it's not just, oh, this is in my head and it's exhausting and it's having a negative impact on my energy. It's also then the impact it has on my energy is changing the frequency that goes out, right? So the thing is when we are in what we perceive as a problem, right? What our brain perceives as a problem of maybe not knowing exactly how something is gonna work out, or maybe your finances aren't where you thought they would be, or maybe someone else gets engaged and you're like, what the fuck? Everyone is getting coupled up and, and I'm not like, I'm still single. Right? Whatever it is in your life that you're navigating, right? That you're trying to figure out, our brains love to go into hyperdrive and will think about it and think about it and think about it. And again, maybe it's a conversation you had and someone just rubbed you the wrong way and you just keep playing it on your head over and over and over and over again. Right? The thing with that is that when our brains perceive a problem, our brains also wanna create a solution. So it goes into this loop because thinking about it feels productive, like it feels like we're doing something to solve it. And it feels like the more we think about it, the more clarity we'll get. The faster we'll get to an answer, the better we'll feel, and we kind of try to think our way out of the frequency. And so again, this isn't necessarily good, bad, right or wrong, but I really found myself doing this very thing as I was coming up against different challenges and to the point where I'm sure you've had this experience too, where you like wake up in the middle of the night because your brain is just so activated and still trying to solve, solve, solve, solve, solve. Now I'm sure we also all can agree on that when we're overthinking, when we're like obsessing or trying to solve in our mind something that has not yet happened, right? Whether we're thinking about something in the future or we're ruminating on something in the past, we're spinning out in our brains. When that is happening, even though it feels productive, all it is doing is creating extra noise and in our thoughts, nothing is actually solved. I am gonna say that again in our thoughts, nothing is actually solved. And this might feel counterintuitive because I will also say that thoughts create things. However, when we're in a loop and we're just going like round and round in a circle and we're just not getting off the bus, not getting off the merry-go-round, right? What's happening is we are ruminating on the problem. We're thinking about the problem. We're thinking about the problem. We're thinking about the problem, and as much as our brain wants to be tuned to the solution, when we are worried or anxious or frustrated or confused, we're not in the space to actually access the answer from Source. Because again, remember that our outgoing. Energy has to match the input we're trying to receive. We have to be on the same station. And energetically speaking, if we're in the doubt, fear, worry, et cetera, we're just not vibrating on that same plane. And so, what do we do about it? In order to literally stop the Inner Static. We have to be willing to change the channel and go a little bit cold turkey. Now, I'm not saying if you have an emotion in your body that you shouldn't process it. A hundred percent. Slow down. Process it. As in be with it, witness it, allow it, and at some point you have to decide to shut it down. We just have to make the active decision to shut it down, because our brain will not stop. So you wanna be exploring what are some great ways to interrupt my brain? Right? Maybe that's going on a walk. Maybe that's listening to a different song. Maybe it's choosing a different topic, like actively going and reading something that will inspire you. It's literally anything. And honestly, the most helpful thing for me is usually meditating and like slowing down to plug back into expanded consciousness, so that the Inner Static is no longer loud. And just by turning down the volume of the Inner Static, by literally giving yourself permission to see it, to see the spiral, to say Hello, brain. I love you. I hear what you're saying, and like, we are not going to have this conversation again right now. I hear you and I'm putting you down. Right. When we do that, we create enough quiet, stillness, space in our brain and body to welcome in something new, right? Like we have to change the energetic output by slowing down to be intentional about actively shifting our focus. Now the other thing that came up when I was introducing this idea to my clients is that we also wanna be thinking about like, what if that voice is not as nasty as we think it is? Right? Like one of my clients is saying like something came up and their brain just kept saying, this is stupid. It's not gonna happen. Like, who do you think you are? And I feel like if you're dramatic, like me and my clients, it could be so easy to make that person like really nasty, like really, really nasty. And I can't remember the exact example, but I remember I saw like a TikTok and it was a girl and her mom, and they were trying to like. I don't know, recreate some trend. And she was trying to tell her, mom, no, no, no, you're, you're being too nice. And then so the mom really dug in and she said, whatever the line was that I don't remember. And she was like, oh my God, what was that? And it went like the total other side of the pendulum. Like I feel like that's how we personify our inner voice. We make it like the nastiest bitch and we hear it with so much like bite, of like, who do you think you are? And it feels aggressive. And what I was playing around with with one of my clients was like, what if that voice actually was like not a bitch, and she was just being like this thoughtful companion and friend of like, oh my gosh. But like, but who do you think you are? Like, are, are we allowed to do this? Like, if this was a concerned friend, rather than a bitchy, judgmental person, right? Then we can just be like, oh, like. I hear you. I recognize the fear and it's totally normal, but don't worry, I got this and I'm gonna take it from here. Right? It's like our inner child coming up to really ask these questions. This like sweet, young version of us that's like coming out as fear, but if we don't personify that voice, that Inner Static as someone who is like our arch nemesis trying to take us out. I just think, again, it finds this way to soften the noise, to witness it and not to engage or believe it. And if you have not practiced this skill yet, it might sound like I am talking out of my ass. But what I wanna offer is that as you slow down, as you start witnessing, these are thoughts. These are thoughts that I'm having, rather than, oh my God, this is a truth of the universe like this thought is creating so much drama and so much panic, and I have to think about it and think about it and solve for it and listen for it and come up with 10 different solutions. Right? All of that's creating more noise and more chaos in our inner world. It's disrupting the output. So the Inner Static, when we can quiet that voice, when we can stop trying to find solutions through thought, but tap into energetically aligned solutions that come from our connection with Higher intelligence that has answers far beyond what we have access to, right. When we give ourselves the permission to tap into that greater knowing and sort of surrender the how and really just lean into being in the frequency of it being solved, of that wish being fulfilled, of the resolution already happening that's how we start matching our frequency to that of which we want. Right. And when those two things align. That's when we're actually on the proper channel to receive it. Okay. What I would love for you to take away from this episode is just starting to be more aware. Where are you thinking about things and trying to solve things in thought? Which is also interesting 'cause we're trying to solve it in our brain. This is when we're like, oh my God, I have no time because we're sitting around thinking about something, but we're not actually operating from the version of us that trusts and believes that everything is working out for us. And two, most of the time when we're going around and around in our brains in thought, again, we're not taking inspired action, right? We might be doing things and efforting, and again, a lot of times we're just like sitting, spinning out. Like I've literally watched myself in space, not wanna move, be like, so low energy and drained and like not wanting to get up out of bed, because again, my brain is just creating so much Inner Static, right? So one, we wanna just become aware of it. Two, we want to witness it and be willing to turn down the volume of the inner static, knowing that we wanna tune to the frequency of the solution, or at least become available to hear the solution. And then we also want to be taking different action, right? Because when we're not drained or heavy in the worry, the fear, the blame, the wrongness, that's when we actually feel inspired and available to take different actions. To also build up our ability and our capacity to feel witness, hear the Inner Static, but choose a different experience. Right? Like where it can be in the car, but it's not driving. Where it can be present without being wrong, but we're not letting that take over how we're showing up in life, in our physical space, in our physical reality, right? We're not losing days, weeks, months, because of a feeling or a spiral of thinking that just is never ending. Okay, so that's what I got for you this week. Start paying attention, start acknowledging when you are thinking thoughts, and just start paying attention to how you can experiment with changing the channel without needing to wait days, weeks, months, at a time, right? Like play with, what if I believed right now I could change the channel and shut down this Inner Static that's happening, knowing that thought loops and spirals and thinking, and thinking and thinking and overthinking isn't going to change reality, if we're only sitting in our rooms alone thinking about something. All right? That's what I got for you this week. I'll meet you back here for another episode. Hey, I wanna invite you to get started.
