In her words: "},{"startTime":174.72,"endTime":180.56,"body":"Calling on her legendary sense of "},{"startTime":174.72,"endTime":180.56,"body":"humor, she likened the exercise to align  "},{"startTime":180.56,"endTime":188.72,"body":"by a great Roman philosopher who wrote 2000 years "},{"startTime":180.56,"endTime":188.72,"body":"ago, \"I was shipwrecked before I got aboard.\""},{"startTime":192.08,"endTime":198.16,"body":"In her now classic book, \"Toward a Caring "},{"startTime":192.08,"endTime":198.16,"body":"Curriculum: A New Pedagogy for Nursing,\"  "},{"startTime":198.16,"endTime":206.8,"body":"that she wrote with Dr. Jean Watson,\" the AJN "},{"startTime":198.16,"endTime":206.8,"body":"1990 Book of the Year, Dr. Bevis advocated for  "},{"startTime":206.8,"endTime":214.0,"body":"a new perception of curriculum and curriculum "},{"startTime":206.8,"endTime":214.0,"body":"building. She placed the emphasis not on plans,  "},{"startTime":214.56,"endTime":222.0,"body":"not on content outlines, not on attainment of "},{"startTime":214.56,"endTime":222.0,"body":"traditional behavioral change, but on human  "},{"startTime":222.56,"endTime":231.12,"body":"interactions with learning intentionality. She "},{"startTime":222.56,"endTime":231.12,"body":"asked nurse educators to focus on how to teach  "},{"startTime":231.76,"endTime":240.0,"body":"rather than a sole emphasis on what to teach. She "},{"startTime":231.76,"endTime":240.0,"body":"challenged current assumptions about how faculty  "},{"startTime":240.0,"endTime":248.8,"body":"construct learning and how students learn. She "},{"startTime":240.0,"endTime":248.8,"body":"defined curriculum as engagement as a caring moral  "},{"startTime":248.8,"endTime":257.6,"body":"imperative. Curriculum, she wrote, \"...is the "},{"startTime":248.8,"endTime":257.6,"body":"transactions and interactions that take place  "},{"startTime":257.6,"endTime":264.88,"body":"between students and teachers and among students "},{"startTime":257.6,"endTime":264.88,"body":"with the intent that learning takes place.\"  "},{"startTime":267.6,"endTime":273.44,"body":"To Dr. Bevis, liberating teacher-student "},{"startTime":267.6,"endTime":273.44,"body":"interactions is necessary to support  "},{"startTime":273.44,"endTime":282.08,"body":"educative learning. Her now famous call to nurse "},{"startTime":273.44,"endTime":282.08,"body":"educators was to align with students, not content.  "},{"startTime":282.08,"endTime":289.92,"body":"These ideas were radical departures from current "},{"startTime":282.08,"endTime":289.92,"body":"thinking and for some nurse educators, too distant  "},{"startTime":289.92,"endTime":298.4,"body":"from the behavioral training models that permeated "},{"startTime":289.92,"endTime":298.4,"body":"accreditation and program standards. For others,  "},{"startTime":298.4,"endTime":306.24,"body":"her ideas spurred thoughtful dialogue about how "},{"startTime":298.4,"endTime":306.24,"body":"to build a new educative, humanistic approach  "},{"startTime":306.24,"endTime":313.92,"body":"to create student-teacher interactions that are "},{"startTime":306.24,"endTime":313.92,"body":"caring, equalitarian, to accomplish learning that  "},{"startTime":313.92,"endTime":322.0,"body":"is meaningful and builds higher order thinking, "},{"startTime":313.92,"endTime":322.0,"body":"and to build intentional learning communities.  "},{"startTime":323.2,"endTime":331.04,"body":"Doesn't this discourse sound familiar? Dr. Bevis died "},{"startTime":339.04,"endTime":348.96,"body":"suddenly in 2000 leaving a legacy of ideas and  "},{"startTime":348.96,"endTime":355.52,"body":"perspectives that continue to guide faculty "},{"startTime":348.96,"endTime":355.52,"body":"and shape thinking about how students learn  "},{"startTime":355.52,"endTime":362.56,"body":"and how nursing curriculum must evolve. Her "},{"startTime":355.52,"endTime":362.56,"body":"writing, her gift of humor to help nurse educators  "},{"startTime":362.56,"endTime":369.28,"body":"appreciate new perspectives, and her ability "},{"startTime":362.56,"endTime":369.28,"body":"to promote an emancipatory curriculum while  "},{"startTime":369.28,"endTime":375.44,"body":"acknowledging the inherent challenges was "},{"startTime":369.28,"endTime":375.44,"body":"a turning point in the ongoing curriculum  "},{"startTime":375.44,"endTime":385.52,"body":"revolution. Her work continues to inspire faculty "},{"startTime":375.44,"endTime":385.52,"body":"and nursing graduates today. In 1988, she shared  "},{"startTime":385.52,"endTime":392.64,"body":"her passion for a new teaching paradigm and her "},{"startTime":385.52,"endTime":392.64,"body":"belief that a revolution was inherently needed  "},{"startTime":392.64,"endTime":399.44,"body":"to meet nursing's fundamental responsibility "},{"startTime":392.64,"endTime":399.44,"body":"to the public trust.
