You know, having dialogue is not about"},{"startTime":60.0,"endTime":63.6,"body":"trying to prove someone right or wrong. It's about "},{"startTime":60.0,"endTime":63.6,"body":"being open to really challenging our thinking"},{"startTime":63.6,"endTime":67.84,"body":"and transforming our thinking and growing. "},{"startTime":63.6,"endTime":67.84,"body":"And when you talk about the self-awareness,"},{"startTime":67.84,"endTime":75.28,"body":"it makes me think about how many times I have seen "},{"startTime":67.84,"endTime":75.28,"body":"and I have done myself and been participatory in"},{"startTime":75.28,"endTime":80.32,"body":"really things that are really come from a place "},{"startTime":75.28,"endTime":80.32,"body":"of good intent but land in a way that is really"},{"startTime":81.2,"endTime":86.64,"body":"not it doesn't have the effect that we want. For "},{"startTime":81.2,"endTime":86.64,"body":"instance, you know, I think about when we try to"},{"startTime":86.64,"endTime":91.52,"body":"and I'm thinking small scope within a class or a "},{"startTime":86.64,"endTime":91.52,"body":"course. We try to create these extra resources for"},{"startTime":91.52,"endTime":98.0,"body":"our learners like extra study time or extra review "},{"startTime":91.52,"endTime":98.0,"body":"sessions outside of class. And while that has good"},{"startTime":98.0,"endTime":103.76,"body":"intent, how are we setting up additional barriers "},{"startTime":98.0,"endTime":103.76,"body":"and being exclusive and not inclusive of those"},{"startTime":103.76,"endTime":110.8,"body":"learners who have barriers to access to coming "},{"startTime":103.76,"endTime":110.8,"body":"to a review session outside of class for whatever"},{"startTime":110.8,"endTime":114.08,"body":"reason. They don't have the transportation. "},{"startTime":110.8,"endTime":114.08,"body":"They're working three jobs because they're helping"},{"startTime":114.08,"endTime":120.32,"body":"their parents pay, you know, hold down the rent "},{"startTime":114.08,"endTime":120.32,"body":"at home or whatever it may be. or I think about,"},{"startTime":120.32,"endTime":127.52,"body":"you know, something that's really running hot "},{"startTime":120.32,"endTime":127.52,"body":"for me right now is the contradictory nature of"},{"startTime":128.4,"endTime":134.64,"body":"some of the paradigms we hold as educators when "},{"startTime":128.4,"endTime":134.64,"body":"we use words like weed out courses. For instance,"},{"startTime":134.64,"endTime":139.68,"body":"like we move towards holistic admission "},{"startTime":134.64,"endTime":139.68,"body":"to try to increase diversity. Well, to me,"},{"startTime":139.68,"endTime":145.2,"body":"when we make an admission offer, we're committing "},{"startTime":139.68,"endTime":145.2,"body":"to that student and saying, \"I believe you can be"},{"startTime":145.2,"endTime":150.24,"body":"successful in this program.\" And we admitted "},{"startTime":145.2,"endTime":150.24,"body":"them into it. Then we have a responsibility to"},{"startTime":150.24,"endTime":154.16,"body":"help them be successful and think about what are "},{"startTime":150.24,"endTime":154.16,"body":"their unique learning needs particularly around"},{"startTime":154.16,"endTime":159.76,"body":"students who are first generation college students "},{"startTime":154.16,"endTime":159.76,"body":"are navigating higher education for the first time"},{"startTime":159.76,"endTime":165.68,"body":"with lots of barriers or limited resources. And "},{"startTime":159.76,"endTime":165.68,"body":"then at the same time we refer to certain courses"},{"startTime":165.68,"endTime":172.64,"body":"as a weed out course. To me that's contradictory "},{"startTime":165.68,"endTime":172.64,"body":"and undermines our genuine intent if that's what"},{"startTime":172.64,"endTime":178.08,"body":"it is. If we do have a genuine intent to really "},{"startTime":172.64,"endTime":178.08,"body":"be inclusive and promote equity. Yeah. So those"},{"startTime":178.08,"endTime":184.8,"body":"are some of the things that you stirred up for "},{"startTime":178.08,"endTime":184.8,"body":"me in that that really resonate. Well, you know,"},{"startTime":184.8,"endTime":191.2,"body":"you really touched on a really important point "},{"startTime":184.8,"endTime":191.2,"body":"is, you know, seeing things from more from a"},{"startTime":191.2,"endTime":199.6,"body":"strength-based approach versus a deficit-based "},{"startTime":191.2,"endTime":199.6,"body":"approach. And I'm not a nurse, but I will share"},{"startTime":199.6,"endTime":210.16,"body":"I think, you know, just generationally there's "},{"startTime":199.6,"endTime":210.16,"body":"a good number of nurses who hold what's the term"},{"startTime":210.72,"endTime":220.8,"body":"phrase I've heard? Nurses eat their young, this "},{"startTime":210.72,"endTime":220.8,"body":"lateral violence. You know, I went through ABCDE,"},{"startTime":220.8,"endTime":229.52,"body":"so you should go through a ABC. and that that "},{"startTime":220.8,"endTime":229.52,"body":"there has to be a shift in that in that thinking"},{"startTime":230.8,"endTime":236.24,"body":"because you're right I've heard that also certain "},{"startTime":230.8,"endTime":236.24,"body":"courses well that's the course that usually gets"},{"startTime":236.24,"endTime":245.92,"body":"people kicked out. So let's not even frame it like "},{"startTime":236.24,"endTime":245.92,"body":"that. And I agree, we do have an obligation to me"},{"startTime":245.92,"endTime":253.2,"body":"to, you know, we put folks through interviews "},{"startTime":245.92,"endTime":253.2,"body":"and applications and transcripts and letters"},{"startTime":253.2,"endTime":260.72,"body":"of recommendations. And then and then to look "},{"startTime":253.2,"endTime":260.72,"body":"at them, well, this is the course that usually"},{"startTime":260.72,"endTime":268.24,"body":"gets them kicked out, you know. No, no, let's so "},{"startTime":260.72,"endTime":268.24,"body":"that that that thinking really has to shift. You"},{"startTime":268.24,"endTime":272.8,"body":"really touched on a really important point. The "},{"startTime":268.24,"endTime":272.8,"body":"other point I think is worth mentioning is a lot"},{"startTime":272.8,"endTime":281.12,"body":"of times we as human beings, we're conditioned "},{"startTime":272.8,"endTime":281.12,"body":"to be right or wrong or to win or to lose. And"},{"startTime":281.12,"endTime":285.2,"body":"really for me, the work is, you know, I don't "},{"startTime":281.12,"endTime":285.2,"body":"know anybody yet that's won an award for being"},{"startTime":285.2,"endTime":294.08,"body":"right the most times. It's really about seeking "},{"startTime":285.2,"endTime":294.08,"body":"mutual understanding, common ground. And you know,"},{"startTime":294.08,"endTime":303.04,"body":"higher ed at one point, you know, it was the "},{"startTime":294.08,"endTime":303.04,"body":"place where people had differences of opinions"},{"startTime":303.04,"endTime":312.56,"body":"and that was valued. You know, I for one, I get a "},{"startTime":303.04,"endTime":312.56,"body":"little leery if I give, you know, a presentation,"},{"startTime":312.56,"endTime":316.56,"body":"a lecture, and nobody has any questions, right? "},{"startTime":312.56,"endTime":316.56,"body":"I'm like, \"Somebody should have a question. It"},{"startTime":316.56,"endTime":323.76,"body":"wasn't that good, right? Somebody should have a "},{"startTime":316.56,"endTime":323.76,"body":"question.\" and really hearing having the space to"},{"startTime":323.76,"endTime":330.72,"body":"have that kind of really healthy disagreement "},{"startTime":323.76,"endTime":330.72,"body":"is really what makes great higher education"},{"startTime":330.72,"endTime":336.88,"body":"institutions where we can come together and "},{"startTime":330.72,"endTime":336.88,"body":"hear and really hear each other's differences"},{"startTime":336.88,"endTime":344.64,"body":"of opinions different different perspectives to me "},{"startTime":336.88,"endTime":344.64,"body":"that's what makes it rich but somehow on the way"},{"startTime":344.64,"endTime":351.6,"body":"that that that has taken a turn towards extreme "},{"startTime":344.64,"endTime":351.6,"body":"you agree with me or you're against me. And we've"},{"startTime":351.6,"endTime":359.84,"body":"got the to reshift our thinking and really "},{"startTime":351.6,"endTime":359.84,"body":"embrace that rather than see it as something"},{"startTime":359.84,"endTime":367.84,"body":"that's harmful and negative. And even the labels "},{"startTime":359.84,"endTime":367.84,"body":"that get put on people when they do try to sort"},{"startTime":367.84,"endTime":372.88,"body":"of dance with an issue or put something under a "},{"startTime":367.84,"endTime":372.88,"body":"pressure test or a litmus test and it's, you know,"},{"startTime":372.88,"endTime":376.24,"body":"the labels of they're being difficult, they're "},{"startTime":372.88,"endTime":376.24,"body":"being obstructionary, they're not a team player."},{"startTime":376.24,"endTime":382.96,"body":"I mean, the list goes on to even more harmful "},{"startTime":376.24,"endTime":382.96,"body":"comments that doesn't embrace the space that we"},{"startTime":382.96,"endTime":388.56,"body":"need to hold if we're really going to start moving "},{"startTime":382.96,"endTime":388.56,"body":"forward in this area. Absolutely. Completely agree"},{"startTime":388.56,"endTime":397.28,"body":"with you. Absolutely. And you know, I'd like to "},{"startTime":388.56,"endTime":397.28,"body":"transition our conversation a little bit into"},{"startTime":397.28,"endTime":404.4,"body":"really this academic practice partnership. And "},{"startTime":397.28,"endTime":404.4,"body":"you know, Jeff, you and I had a very interesting"},{"startTime":404.4,"endTime":410.32,"body":"conversation with some nurse managers and we were "},{"startTime":404.4,"endTime":410.32,"body":"inviting their perspectives about some of the"},{"startTime":410.32,"endTime":417.04,"body":"skills that they thought that new grads, right, "},{"startTime":410.32,"endTime":417.04,"body":"leaving not just our program, really any program."},{"startTime":420.88,"endTime":426.88,"body":"What are they needing to do in order to "},{"startTime":420.88,"endTime":426.88,"body":"connect with patients, connect with families,"},{"startTime":427.92,"endTime":432.88,"body":"manage conflict? And so we were asking nurse "},{"startTime":427.92,"endTime":432.88,"body":"managers to share a little bit about their"},{"startTime":432.88,"endTime":438.32,"body":"experience of how nurses are coming into "},{"startTime":432.88,"endTime":438.32,"body":"their clinical units in preparation with"},{"startTime":438.32,"endTime":443.68,"body":"those skills. And I would just would like you "},{"startTime":438.32,"endTime":443.68,"body":"to invite you to share a little bit about,"},{"startTime":443.68,"endTime":450.88,"body":"you know, that conversation because I know you "},{"startTime":443.68,"endTime":450.88,"body":"and I had really good conversations. You know,"},{"startTime":450.88,"endTime":457.52,"body":"just trying to unpack everything we heard and "},{"startTime":450.88,"endTime":457.52,"body":"trying to understand where nursing education can"},{"startTime":457.52,"endTime":464.08,"body":"can some things that we can do to do a better "},{"startTime":457.52,"endTime":464.08,"body":"handoff, you know, to our clinical partners"},{"startTime":464.08,"endTime":468.88,"body":"in that in that arena. So, if you could share "},{"startTime":464.08,"endTime":468.88,"body":"a little bit about our conversations and about"},{"startTime":468.88,"endTime":475.28,"body":"what we learned from that. Yeah, you know, I was "},{"startTime":468.88,"endTime":475.28,"body":"thinking about that and a couple things just stand"},{"startTime":475.28,"endTime":483.68,"body":"out to me and some we some of what we briefly "},{"startTime":475.28,"endTime":483.68,"body":"kind of touched on. One is I think generations"},{"startTime":484.32,"endTime":493.6,"body":"one generations two just how you know today's "},{"startTime":484.32,"endTime":493.6,"body":"students were handling communication how they"},{"startTime":493.6,"endTime":504.16,"body":"were handling and some able to navigate conflict "},{"startTime":493.6,"endTime":504.16,"body":"pretty well. Some weren't. Some needing a bit more"},{"startTime":504.16,"endTime":512.88,"body":"handholding and assurance that they were doing "},{"startTime":504.16,"endTime":512.88,"body":"okay. And you know, we have to be mindful of,"},{"startTime":512.88,"endTime":518.88,"body":"you know, the I speak generationally because "},{"startTime":512.88,"endTime":518.88,"body":"again, you know, there's a generation that's"},{"startTime":518.88,"endTime":528.56,"body":"grown up with technology. There's a generation "},{"startTime":518.88,"endTime":528.56,"body":"that's grown up in a more diverse world. So,"},{"startTime":529.6,"endTime":536.0,"body":"you know, this is a generation that's grown "},{"startTime":529.6,"endTime":536.0,"body":"up where everybody got a participation trophy."},{"startTime":536.0,"endTime":541.28,"body":"This is a generation where you know and I'm "},{"startTime":536.0,"endTime":541.28,"body":"probably guilty of this or my wife and I probably"},{"startTime":541.28,"endTime":549.28,"body":"guilt guilty of this ourselves helicopter parents "},{"startTime":541.28,"endTime":549.28,"body":"where the parents were the spokespeople. So we got"},{"startTime":549.28,"endTime":554.88,"body":"a generation now that's out in the workforce and "},{"startTime":549.28,"endTime":554.88,"body":"some you know for the first time they're having to"},{"startTime":554.88,"endTime":563.2,"body":"advocate for themselves and dealing with conflict "},{"startTime":554.88,"endTime":563.2,"body":"themselves. So this is really why when I think of"},{"startTime":563.2,"endTime":572.16,"body":"just nursing education, it's really important for "},{"startTime":563.2,"endTime":572.16,"body":"us to help give folks the tools and confidence"},{"startTime":572.16,"endTime":577.68,"body":"to navigate through conflict, to navigate and be "},{"startTime":572.16,"endTime":577.68,"body":"able to communicate with people who are different"},{"startTime":577.68,"endTime":583.76,"body":"than themselves, who have different backgrounds, "},{"startTime":577.68,"endTime":583.76,"body":"to really shape and model what that looks like,"},{"startTime":583.76,"endTime":591.28,"body":"how that feels. So that's what I remember from "},{"startTime":583.76,"endTime":591.28,"body":"those conversations just folks you know a bit"},{"startTime":591.28,"endTime":599.2,"body":"of frustration a bit with with not coming not "},{"startTime":591.28,"endTime":599.2,"body":"arriving with the skills to negotiate through"},{"startTime":599.2,"endTime":606.4,"body":"conflict with able being able to communicate "},{"startTime":599.2,"endTime":606.4,"body":"well what's the term interpersonal skills"},{"startTime":606.4,"endTime":613.68,"body":"lacking but again you know it's you know as "},{"startTime":606.4,"endTime":613.68,"body":"parents I know I've contributed to that lack of"},{"startTime":614.32,"endTime":619.92,"body":"ability to do some of those things by, you know, "},{"startTime":614.32,"endTime":619.92,"body":"and society, you know, we like I said, everybody"},{"startTime":619.92,"endTime":625.28,"body":"got a trophy for participating. That sends a "},{"startTime":619.92,"endTime":625.28,"body":"message, right? When you get, you know, you"},{"startTime":625.28,"endTime":630.64,"body":"didn't win, you don't necessarily learn to be a "},{"startTime":625.28,"endTime":630.64,"body":"good sport when you don't get a trophy for losing."},{"startTime":630.64,"endTime":639.36,"body":"So, you know, how to navigate and communicate well "},{"startTime":630.64,"endTime":639.36,"body":"are some underdeveloped skills that I think you"},{"startTime":639.36,"endTime":647.36,"body":"know come from, you know, technology and how folks "},{"startTime":639.36,"endTime":647.36,"body":"have been parented the last 20 or so years which"},{"startTime":647.36,"endTime":655.92,"body":"we've all contributed to. So, that's kind of how "},{"startTime":647.36,"endTime":655.92,"body":"I remember those conversations going. Yeah. But I"},{"startTime":655.92,"endTime":661.28,"body":"think what you're mentioning, what I heard you say "},{"startTime":655.92,"endTime":661.28,"body":"is, you know, tool development, right? So the it's"},{"startTime":661.28,"endTime":666.88,"body":"not that these were things, you know, empathy "},{"startTime":661.28,"endTime":666.88,"body":"and compassion and therapeutic communication"},{"startTime":666.88,"endTime":672.32,"body":"and conflict management. These were things that "},{"startTime":666.88,"endTime":672.32,"body":"our learners couldn't learn. It just they just"},{"startTime":672.32,"endTime":678.48,"body":"needed more tools. They didn't have any workplace "},{"startTime":672.32,"endTime":678.48,"body":"experience. They maybe went from babysitting their"},{"startTime":678.48,"endTime":683.36,"body":"neighbor, you know, neighbors kids to being "},{"startTime":678.48,"endTime":683.36,"body":"a nurse in a hospital and that that was their"},{"startTime":683.36,"endTime":689.52,"body":"transition into the workplace, you know, except "},{"startTime":683.36,"endTime":689.52,"body":"for school, their experience in school, but beyond"},{"startTime":689.52,"endTime":696.24,"body":"that. And the one thing that really resonated with "},{"startTime":689.52,"endTime":696.24,"body":"me too from a positive perspective is that the"},{"startTime":696.24,"endTime":706.64,"body":"conversation nurse manager shared that the younger "},{"startTime":696.24,"endTime":706.64,"body":"generation of nurses coming invited feedback. They"},{"startTime":706.64,"endTime":712.72,"body":"loved and needed feedback, a lot of feedback, and "},{"startTime":706.64,"endTime":712.72,"body":"they would always say, \"Tell me how I'm doing.\""},{"startTime":713.52,"endTime":717.84,"body":"I think some people might think that's a fault "},{"startTime":713.52,"endTime":717.84,"body":"that they needed maybe, you know, not they,"},{"startTime":717.84,"endTime":723.36,"body":"but the new grads needed too much feedback, but "},{"startTime":717.84,"endTime":723.36,"body":"I think that's a good thing to invite, you know,"},{"startTime":723.36,"endTime":729.12,"body":"show me, show me what I need to do. And they said "},{"startTime":723.36,"endTime":729.12,"body":"they were most nurses were very forthcoming in"},{"startTime":729.12,"endTime":735.76,"body":"doing that. So, I think that's a positive thing. "},{"startTime":729.12,"endTime":735.76,"body":"I agree. I agree. And that's what I meant by the"},{"startTime":735.76,"endTime":742.72,"body":"handholding and assurance, the constant feedback. "},{"startTime":735.76,"endTime":742.72,"body":"And we all need that. And a word I'm fond of in"},{"startTime":742.72,"endTime":749.12,"body":"scenarios that we're describing is practice. "},{"startTime":742.72,"endTime":749.12,"body":"We all need practice. Difficult conversations,"},{"startTime":749.12,"endTime":755.28,"body":"we need practice. And sometimes you don't get that "},{"startTime":749.12,"endTime":755.28,"body":"kind of practice. And with that kind of practice,"},{"startTime":755.28,"endTime":762.4,"body":"I think you develop you know better skill, a "},{"startTime":755.28,"endTime":762.4,"body":"better skill set, you become more confident."},{"startTime":763.04,"endTime":769.68,"body":"That's one of the best things about asking "},{"startTime":763.04,"endTime":769.68,"body":"questions is asking a question gives you clarity"},{"startTime":769.68,"endTime":777.76,"body":"and confidence and you know and a lot of some of "},{"startTime":769.68,"endTime":777.76,"body":"that is culturally you know is it okay to ask a"},{"startTime":777.76,"endTime":785.68,"body":"question is it okay to ask the same question you "},{"startTime":777.76,"endTime":785.68,"body":"know because sometimes you ask a question I know"},{"startTime":785.68,"endTime":790.16,"body":"there's times where you talked about the nonverbal "},{"startTime":785.68,"endTime":790.16,"body":"and you get the didn't I didn't you didn't you ask"},{"startTime":790.16,"endTime":797.44,"body":"me that yesterday And so you know that shuts down "},{"startTime":790.16,"endTime":797.44,"body":"inclusion that's a bar uncertainty is a barrier"},{"startTime":797.44,"endTime":806.48,"body":"right so absolutely we all need that sometimes "},{"startTime":797.44,"endTime":806.48,"body":"I think sometimes folks get amnesia about back"},{"startTime":806.48,"endTime":813.92,"body":"to when they were new or when they first started "},{"startTime":806.48,"endTime":813.92,"body":"right we all started we all learned to drive right"},{"startTime":813.92,"endTime":822.88,"body":"and we didn't know how to drive so we all had a "},{"startTime":813.92,"endTime":822.88,"body":"first day but we didn't have all the answers. And"},{"startTime":822.88,"endTime":836.0,"body":"like you said, I think empathy, really seeing it "},{"startTime":822.88,"endTime":836.0,"body":"from the other person's viewpoint is important."},{"startTime":836.0,"endTime":840.24,"body":"We talked a little bit about in the academic "},{"startTime":836.0,"endTime":840.24,"body":"setting and then your conversations with"},{"startTime":840.24,"endTime":845.44,"body":"the clinical practice partners. It leads me to "},{"startTime":840.24,"endTime":845.44,"body":"thinking about bridging the gap between academia"},{"startTime":845.44,"endTime":851.6,"body":"and clinical practice. And as educators, we're "},{"startTime":845.44,"endTime":851.6,"body":"we're charged with helping prepare our nursing"},{"startTime":851.6,"endTime":858.24,"body":"students to be members of the workforce and "},{"startTime":851.6,"endTime":858.24,"body":"to graduate and enter the profession. And one"},{"startTime":858.24,"endTime":862.32,"body":"that starts with us, right? We have to "},{"startTime":858.24,"endTime":862.32,"body":"do our own work in this area. And two,"},{"startTime":862.32,"endTime":866.8,"body":"we have to guide our learners in navigating "},{"startTime":862.32,"endTime":866.8,"body":"how to do the work themselves too, so that"},{"startTime":866.8,"endTime":875.04,"body":"they are prepared to enter work force and provide "},{"startTime":866.8,"endTime":875.04,"body":"inclusive, affirming care for the clients that"},{"startTime":875.04,"endTime":878.96,"body":"they care for. So, I'm curious to hear your "},{"startTime":875.04,"endTime":878.96,"body":"thoughts on this is gonna be a big question,"},{"startTime":878.96,"endTime":885.68,"body":"a juicy one. Are there innovative ways that we "},{"startTime":878.96,"endTime":885.68,"body":"can do that? If someone came up to you and said,"},{"startTime":885.68,"endTime":891.84,"body":"you know, like what recommendations would you have "},{"startTime":885.68,"endTime":891.84,"body":"for folks trying to figure out how to do the work,"},{"startTime":891.84,"endTime":897.36,"body":"like the work that we need to do as educators, the "},{"startTime":891.84,"endTime":897.36,"body":"work we need to help our learners learn how to do."},{"startTime":898.64,"endTime":904.88,"body":"What are your reactions to that or your thoughts? "},{"startTime":898.64,"endTime":904.88,"body":"What would you say? Well, my reaction and thought,"},{"startTime":904.88,"endTime":914.08,"body":"you know, and I don't know how innovative this "},{"startTime":904.88,"endTime":914.08,"body":"is. But it really does start with with me,"},{"startTime":914.08,"endTime":922.8,"body":"starts with you. And I guess I'll start with "},{"startTime":914.08,"endTime":922.8,"body":"like an example. It's this "},{"startTime":992.08,"endTime":999.92,"body":"amazing safe platform to come together a variety"},{"startTime":999.92,"endTime":1003.68,"body":"of perspectives. Some people from the city, some "},{"startTime":999.92,"endTime":1003.68,"body":"people in the country, some are fac, some are"},{"startTime":1003.68,"endTime":1009.04,"body":"staff, some are black, some are white, some are "},{"startTime":1003.68,"endTime":1009.04,"body":"men, we got women's. It's a great opportunity to"},{"startTime":1009.04,"endTime":1017.6,"body":"come together in a in a safe way. I think it comes "},{"startTime":1009.04,"endTime":1017.6,"body":"with spending time being intentional on spending"},{"startTime":1017.6,"endTime":1024.64,"body":"time with people who are different than you. I "},{"startTime":1017.6,"endTime":1024.64,"body":"know at one point when I was teaching prior to"},{"startTime":1024.64,"endTime":1031.28,"body":"my university around Baltimore experience one of "},{"startTime":1024.64,"endTime":1031.28,"body":"my for the graduate course I was doing delivering"},{"startTime":1031.28,"endTime":1036.24,"body":"on diversity inclusion one of the assignments "},{"startTime":1031.28,"endTime":1036.24,"body":"was you have to spend some time in a space that"},{"startTime":1036.24,"endTime":1044.64,"body":"you wouldn't ordinarily spend and you got to go "},{"startTime":1036.24,"endTime":1044.64,"body":"by yourself because sometimes people can I take"},{"startTime":1044.64,"endTime":1052.08,"body":"my boyfriend no you got to go by yourself I want "},{"startTime":1044.64,"endTime":1052.08,"body":"you to experience the discomfort of being alone,"},{"startTime":1052.08,"endTime":1058.8,"body":"being in that space. And when I think of just some "},{"startTime":1052.08,"endTime":1058.8,"body":"of the assignments over the years, it was I forget"},{"startTime":1058.8,"endTime":1065.84,"body":"it was a it was a white man who went to a black "},{"startTime":1058.8,"endTime":1065.84,"body":"barber shop. He went to my barber shop and he"},{"startTime":1065.84,"endTime":1069.36,"body":"initially asked me, \"Could he go?\" I'm like, \"No, "},{"startTime":1065.84,"endTime":1069.36,"body":"no.\" He asked me, \"Would I go with him?\" I'm like,"},{"startTime":1069.36,"endTime":1075.12,"body":"\"No, no, I'm not gonna go with you. That's going "},{"startTime":1069.36,"endTime":1075.12,"body":"to make that way too easy.\" I've had people spend"},{"startTime":1075.12,"endTime":1082.4,"body":"time at an intersection with a homeless person "},{"startTime":1075.12,"endTime":1082.4,"body":"to learn. I mean, because I mean, think about it."},{"startTime":1082.4,"endTime":1088.72,"body":"When you see the homeless sign, your personal and "},{"startTime":1082.4,"endTime":1088.72,"body":"culture experience tells you who that person is."},{"startTime":1089.76,"endTime":1096.32,"body":"And I've had students who have spent, you "},{"startTime":1089.76,"endTime":1096.32,"body":"know, half a day with a homeless person at an"},{"startTime":1096.32,"endTime":1104.08,"body":"intersection only to learn that they're a father, "},{"startTime":1096.32,"endTime":1104.08,"body":"a husband, a war veteran who just came upon some"},{"startTime":1104.08,"endTime":1111.28,"body":"difficult times. So, you got to spend time, "},{"startTime":1104.08,"endTime":1111.28,"body":"be intentional, spending time in circumstances"},{"startTime":1111.28,"endTime":1118.72,"body":"and with people who are different than you and "},{"startTime":1111.28,"endTime":1118.72,"body":"your background. I think again reading there's"},{"startTime":1118.72,"endTime":1127.44,"body":"all kinds of committees, councils, where you can "},{"startTime":1118.72,"endTime":1127.44,"body":"volunteer your time, engagement centers, people in"},{"startTime":1127.44,"endTime":1134.4,"body":"a community. Most associations, I'll just name a "},{"startTime":1127.44,"endTime":1134.4,"body":"couple, like the National Association of Diversity"},{"startTime":1134.4,"endTime":1143.12,"body":"Officers has a journal, Insight into Diversity has "},{"startTime":1134.4,"endTime":1143.12,"body":"a publication. Diversity in higher education has"},{"startTime":1143.12,"endTime":1152.48,"body":"a monthly publication. So it's really about it's "},{"startTime":1143.12,"endTime":1152.48,"body":"really be about being intentional in in educating"},{"startTime":1152.48,"endTime":1161.52,"body":"yourself, surrounding pe surrounding yourself with "},{"startTime":1152.48,"endTime":1161.52,"body":"people who are invested in that work. and it's"},{"startTime":1161.52,"endTime":1169.92,"body":"again being vulnerable in at least being willing "},{"startTime":1161.52,"endTime":1169.92,"body":"to be uncomfortable for a minute. So you know,"},{"startTime":1169.92,"endTime":1175.92,"body":"I don't know how innovative that is. "},{"startTime":1169.92,"endTime":1175.92,"body":"But I have found that to be the formula"},{"startTime":1175.92,"endTime":1184.0,"body":"that you know that those are things that I do. "},{"startTime":1175.92,"endTime":1184.0,"body":"I read I spend time coffee I mentioned earlier"},{"startTime":1184.0,"endTime":1189.68,"body":"walking the building. I walk the building. I walk "},{"startTime":1184.0,"endTime":1189.68,"body":"the building. I want to engage. I want to hear"},{"startTime":1189.68,"endTime":1193.84,"body":"where and here here's the other thing I think is "},{"startTime":1189.68,"endTime":1193.84,"body":"important is meeting people where they are. And I"},{"startTime":1193.84,"endTime":1200.48,"body":"mean that literally and figuratively. Meeting them "},{"startTime":1193.84,"endTime":1200.48,"body":"where they are. Sometimes where they are is in"},{"startTime":1200.48,"endTime":1207.44,"body":"the elevator and having a heated conversation. The "},{"startTime":1200.48,"endTime":1207.44,"body":"emotion after a tough exam. Sometime that's in the"},{"startTime":1207.44,"endTime":1213.52,"body":"front of the building when they're all gathered "},{"startTime":1207.44,"endTime":1213.52,"body":"together and you see these animated conversations."},{"startTime":1213.52,"endTime":1219.28,"body":"Sometimes that's where u you know folks are eating "},{"startTime":1213.52,"endTime":1219.28,"body":"lunch in in a certain section of the building."},{"startTime":1220.32,"endTime":1226.08,"body":"You know, sometimes that's, you know, community "},{"startTime":1220.32,"endTime":1226.08,"body":"members who you see, you know, along the sidewalk"},{"startTime":1226.08,"endTime":1232.88,"body":"who are pointing to the building saying that place "},{"startTime":1226.08,"endTime":1232.88,"body":"is whatever. So, it really is about meeting people"},{"startTime":1232.88,"endTime":1240.24,"body":"where they are, meeting students where they "},{"startTime":1232.88,"endTime":1240.24,"body":"are. You know, some arrive I use the acronym,"},{"startTime":1240.24,"endTime":1247.12,"body":"not acronym, but analogy. If you follow "},{"startTime":1240.24,"endTime":1247.12,"body":"track and field, there are eight lanes and"},{"startTime":1247.12,"endTime":1254.08,"body":"the inside lane is the optimal lane where the "},{"startTime":1247.12,"endTime":1254.08,"body":"lanes are staggered. You know, there's a lane"},{"startTime":1254.08,"endTime":1259.12,"body":"eight that's further back. The race is the same "},{"startTime":1254.08,"endTime":1259.12,"body":"length for everybody whether you start in lane"},{"startTime":1259.12,"endTime":1265.04,"body":"one or lane eight. It starts and ends the same "},{"startTime":1259.12,"endTime":1265.04,"body":"time, but everybody doesn't arrive with the same"},{"startTime":1265.04,"endTime":1273.68,"body":"things. I clearly remember being an undergraduate "},{"startTime":1265.04,"endTime":1273.68,"body":"student at one point arrived at Towson University,"},{"startTime":1273.68,"endTime":1279.12,"body":"I couldn't count two people that ever set foot "},{"startTime":1273.68,"endTime":1279.12,"body":"forth on a college campus and I would hear"},{"startTime":1279.12,"endTime":1286.24,"body":"jargon. This is I'm dating myself. This is back "},{"startTime":1279.12,"endTime":1286.24,"body":"when you had in-person registration, right? So,"},{"startTime":1287.28,"endTime":1293.52,"body":"I never forget I was handed a sheet of paper and "},{"startTime":1287.28,"endTime":1293.52,"body":"told go to the BERSAR's office. My parents were"},{"startTime":1293.52,"endTime":1301.6,"body":"in the car. I had no idea what the Bersar's office "},{"startTime":1293.52,"endTime":1301.6,"body":"meant. So, it's really about meeting people where"},{"startTime":1301.6,"endTime":1310.8,"body":"they are. Being intentional on reading, spending "},{"startTime":1301.6,"endTime":1310.8,"body":"time with even for my classes. I have a time where"},{"startTime":1310.8,"endTime":1316.72,"body":"it's just get to know the instructor. I've even "},{"startTime":1310.8,"endTime":1316.72,"body":"done classes where we have what's called the hot"},{"startTime":1316.72,"endTime":1322.8,"body":"seat at the end of class where we take maybe five "},{"startTime":1316.72,"endTime":1322.8,"body":"minutes where you can ask me anything. Typically,"},{"startTime":1322.8,"endTime":1326.56,"body":"students will ask, \"Well, how old are you? Are "},{"startTime":1322.8,"endTime":1326.56,"body":"you married? How'd you meet your wife?\" But really"},{"startTime":1326.56,"endTime":1331.92,"body":"what I'm trying to do is build create a sense of "},{"startTime":1326.56,"endTime":1331.92,"body":"relatedness because a lot of times students walk"},{"startTime":1331.92,"endTime":1339.2,"body":"in that classroom they see Dr. Ash. They don't "},{"startTime":1331.92,"endTime":1339.2,"body":"see a husband, a father, an asthmatic, a guy who's"},{"startTime":1339.2,"endTime":1345.28,"body":"pretty laidback from the Eastern shore, they don't see that. "},{"startTime":1339.2,"endTime":1345.28,"body":"They see Dr. Ash. That's who they see. And then"},{"startTime":1345.28,"endTime":1351.68,"body":"and when we understand the barriers to inclusion "},{"startTime":1345.28,"endTime":1351.68,"body":"of status, that type of dynamic and status"},{"startTime":1351.68,"endTime":1357.68,"body":"creates a barrier to inclusion. So, it's really "},{"startTime":1351.68,"endTime":1357.68,"body":"about being intentional, spending time reading,"},{"startTime":1357.68,"endTime":1366.0,"body":"engaging others, reaching out. So sorry if I went "},{"startTime":1357.68,"endTime":1366.0,"body":"a little long there, but that like I said, I don't"},{"startTime":1366.0,"endTime":1374.72,"body":"know how innovative that is. But I've known that "},{"startTime":1366.0,"endTime":1374.72,"body":"to work and when I think of colleagues and the"},{"startTime":1374.72,"endTime":1382.96,"body":"networks that I'm in, those are the things we talk "},{"startTime":1374.72,"endTime":1382.96,"body":"about. I think that was so helpful and insightful."},{"startTime":1382.96,"endTime":1389.44,"body":"And there's a lot in there that educators and "},{"startTime":1382.96,"endTime":1389.44,"body":"other listeners of this can take away and put"},{"startTime":1389.44,"endTime":1395.44,"body":"into action. And there's a lot in "},{"startTime":1443.28,"endTime":1453.36,"body":"between there that really speaks to me in this"},{"startTime":1453.36,"endTime":1460.24,"body":"moment. I would even say there's a lot of imagery "},{"startTime":1453.36,"endTime":1460.24,"body":"in that. You kind of have field, the word field,"},{"startTime":1460.24,"endTime":1469.52,"body":"and a mountain and I love it. I can picture it. "},{"startTime":1460.24,"endTime":1469.52,"body":"What is on the top of your reading list right now"},{"startTime":1469.52,"endTime":1477.76,"body":"for fun? So I've been reading that. I love"},{"startTime":1518.88,"endTime":1526.72,"body":"the excerpts from that and seeing how he prepared "},{"startTime":1518.88,"endTime":1526.72,"body":"for cases. Just the oh my gosh the hardships of"},{"startTime":1526.72,"endTime":1535.76,"body":"not being able to eat and spend the night in a "},{"startTime":1526.72,"endTime":1535.76,"body":"lot of these cities where the cases were being"},{"startTime":1535.76,"endTime":1540.96,"body":"presided. He you know having to live and eat "},{"startTime":1535.76,"endTime":1540.96,"body":"a couple hours away from where the cases were"},{"startTime":1540.96,"endTime":1548.24,"body":"presided over. So that inspires me when I think "},{"startTime":1540.96,"endTime":1548.24,"body":"of you know sometimes during a difficult day and"},{"startTime":1548.24,"endTime":1554.0,"body":"so reading the autobiography th Marshall "},{"startTime":1548.24,"endTime":1554.0,"body":"and right now inclusive conversations I"},{"startTime":1554.0,"endTime":1560.16,"body":"have picked up recently and I'm looking at "},{"startTime":1554.0,"endTime":1560.16,"body":"it now stamped from the beginning. I'm a big"},{"startTime":1560.16,"endTime":1567.12,"body":"Dr. Ibram X. Kendi fan. He came to our campus a "},{"startTime":1560.16,"endTime":1567.12,"body":"couple years ago. And I like the third Marshall"},{"startTime":1567.12,"endTime":1573.68,"body":"book. That's one of the few books I've ever gotten "},{"startTime":1567.12,"endTime":1573.68,"body":"where the author signed it for me. Juan Williams"},{"startTime":1573.68,"endTime":1583.52,"body":"signed that book for me. So that's what I have "},{"startTime":1573.68,"endTime":1583.52,"body":"out right now. That's great. Always been fascinated of how she made"},{"startTime":1667.76,"endTime":1677.36,"body":"those repeated trips to and from and avoided "},{"startTime":1667.76,"endTime":1677.36,"body":"capture, right? And not, you know, not being"},{"startTime":1677.36,"endTime":1685.84,"body":"a scholar and not well read and using the north "},{"startTime":1677.36,"endTime":1685.84,"body":"star and oh my gosh, absolutely Harriet Tubman. I got to tell you, I'm impressed "},{"startTime":1685.84,"endTime":1689.6,"body":"you picked one because, you know, Michelle and I"},{"startTime":1689.6,"endTime":1692.72,"body":"are hosting dinner parties.
