Thank you for inviting me and I'm "},{"startTime":124.24,"endTime":129.84,"body":"really excited to talk about all the wonderful"},{"startTime":129.84,"endTime":135.36,"body":"consortium experiences we have going on at "},{"startTime":129.84,"endTime":135.36,"body":"Montgomery College and in the state of Maryland."},{"startTime":135.36,"endTime":141.12,"body":"Absolutely. So I think a great place to kick us "},{"startTime":135.36,"endTime":141.12,"body":"off and start is really what the consortium is"},{"startTime":141.12,"endTime":145.12,"body":"all about, a little bit of its background and its "},{"startTime":141.12,"endTime":145.12,"body":"history. I think it's really awesome that you've"},{"startTime":145.12,"endTime":149.44,"body":"been with it since the very beginning. And you "},{"startTime":145.12,"endTime":149.44,"body":"have a really unique perspective to share. So I'm"},{"startTime":149.44,"endTime":155.68,"body":"curious to hear more about it. Absolutely. So, the "},{"startTime":149.44,"endTime":155.68,"body":"Maryland Clinical Simulation Resource Consortium,"},{"startTime":155.68,"endTime":165.36,"body":"which we affectionately call MCSRC, we received "},{"startTime":155.68,"endTime":165.36,"body":"our initial funding in fiscal year 2015. It was"},{"startTime":165.36,"endTime":174.72,"body":"a five-year grant. We received over $3.1 million "},{"startTime":165.36,"endTime":174.72,"body":"to provide simulation, education, best practices,"},{"startTime":174.72,"endTime":182.4,"body":"and to purchase equipment, materials, and supplies "},{"startTime":174.72,"endTime":182.4,"body":"for the 23 prelicensure nursing programs in the"},{"startTime":182.4,"endTime":190.08,"body":"state of Maryland. The funding source of that "},{"startTime":182.4,"endTime":190.08,"body":"of those millions of dollars came from the"},{"startTime":190.08,"endTime":198.16,"body":"Health Services Cost Review Commission which is also "},{"startTime":190.08,"endTime":198.16,"body":"affectionately known as HSCRC. So many acronyms"},{"startTime":198.16,"endTime":205.12,"body":"in the state of Maryland. And so, there is state "},{"startTime":198.16,"endTime":205.12,"body":"legislation that requires each of our hospitals"},{"startTime":205.12,"endTime":214.8,"body":"to provide 0.1% of their annual revenue, to be "},{"startTime":205.12,"endTime":214.8,"body":"dedicated specifically to nursing education. So,"},{"startTime":214.8,"endTime":221.44,"body":"a portion of those funds go directly back to the "},{"startTime":214.8,"endTime":221.44,"body":"hospitals for hospital-based nursing education"},{"startTime":221.44,"endTime":226.64,"body":"programs. And in the state of Maryland, all of "},{"startTime":221.44,"endTime":226.64,"body":"our hospitals participate in a nurse residency"},{"startTime":226.64,"endTime":232.64,"body":"program. So funding can go towards that. It can "},{"startTime":226.64,"endTime":232.64,"body":"go to professional development. It can go towards"},{"startTime":232.64,"endTime":238.08,"body":"tuition reimbursement. All of those things "},{"startTime":232.64,"endTime":238.08,"body":"at the hospital level. The additional funds"},{"startTime":238.08,"endTime":245.44,"body":"are provided to the colleges and universities as "},{"startTime":238.08,"endTime":245.44,"body":"a competitive grant process. So each of the 23"},{"startTime":245.44,"endTime":254.0,"body":"prelicensure programs can apply for grant funds "},{"startTime":245.44,"endTime":254.0,"body":"to support initiatives that are relevant for"},{"startTime":254.0,"endTime":260.64,"body":"nursing education in academia. So again, 0.1% of "},{"startTime":254.0,"endTime":260.64,"body":"the revenue comes from the healthcare cost review"},{"startTime":260.64,"endTime":265.68,"body":"commission. Those funds come from the hospital. "},{"startTime":260.64,"endTime":265.68,"body":"It's a requirement. Each hospital has to pour"},{"startTime":265.68,"endTime":272.48,"body":"into nursing education. Those funds are then given "},{"startTime":265.68,"endTime":272.48,"body":"to Maryland Higher Education Commission, which is"},{"startTime":272.48,"endTime":282.08,"body":"MHEC. And so MHEC manages those grant funds. So "},{"startTime":272.48,"endTime":282.08,"body":"Montgomery College is extremely fortunate to have"},{"startTime":282.08,"endTime":291.68,"body":"been chosen as the host school to run the MCSRC. "},{"startTime":282.08,"endTime":291.68,"body":"So we were invited to host the consortium for"},{"startTime":291.68,"endTime":298.8,"body":"simulation. The University of Maryland School of "},{"startTime":291.68,"endTime":298.8,"body":"Nursing at the same year received funding to run"},{"startTime":298.8,"endTime":305.2,"body":"a leadership cohort that would affect all of the "},{"startTime":298.8,"endTime":305.2,"body":"prelicensure programs for faculty development and"},{"startTime":305.2,"endTime":312.96,"body":"training specific to nursing education leadership. "},{"startTime":305.2,"endTime":312.96,"body":"So Montgomery College was running the simulation"},{"startTime":312.96,"endTime":319.52,"body":"portion of it. And so over the first five years "},{"startTime":312.96,"endTime":319.52,"body":"of that grant, I served as the program director."},{"startTime":319.52,"endTime":326.08,"body":"Sabrina Beroz, which she's been very involved in "},{"startTime":319.52,"endTime":326.08,"body":"our simulation community, was our first faculty"},{"startTime":326.08,"endTime":332.24,"body":"lead and the responsibility of the faculty lead "},{"startTime":326.08,"endTime":332.24,"body":"is to make sure that all of our curricula, all of"},{"startTime":332.24,"endTime":338.48,"body":"our activities that we're providing. We have a "},{"startTime":332.24,"endTime":338.48,"body":"phenomenal simulation library where we record,"},{"startTime":338.48,"endTime":345.28,"body":"produce, and have our simulations up on the "},{"startTime":338.48,"endTime":345.28,"body":"website in the open domain for others to use"},{"startTime":345.28,"endTime":351.84,"body":"and I'll put a shameless plug there because they "},{"startTime":345.28,"endTime":351.84,"body":"were used quite a bit during the pandemic. And so,"},{"startTime":351.84,"endTime":356.96,"body":"we were just very happy as a college "},{"startTime":351.84,"endTime":356.96,"body":"and as a consortium that we were able to"},{"startTime":356.96,"endTime":365.12,"body":"have these simulation experiences in place long "},{"startTime":356.96,"endTime":365.12,"body":"before they were actually needed. So that's how"},{"startTime":365.12,"endTime":369.36,"body":"the structure is for our consortium. I'm the "},{"startTime":365.12,"endTime":369.36,"body":"program director. As the program director, my"},{"startTime":369.36,"endTime":375.36,"body":"responsibility is to oversee all of the finances, "},{"startTime":369.36,"endTime":375.36,"body":"to oversee all of the grant reporting, to make"},{"startTime":375.36,"endTime":379.84,"body":"sure that we're disseminating information, to make "},{"startTime":375.36,"endTime":379.84,"body":"sure that we're surveying and gathering all the"},{"startTime":379.84,"endTime":386.56,"body":"information that's relevant for the program "},{"startTime":379.84,"endTime":386.56,"body":"to continue and for the program to grow. So,"},{"startTime":386.56,"endTime":391.84,"body":"that's kind of the back history of it. So, we were "},{"startTime":386.56,"endTime":391.84,"body":"fortunate to receive a renewal of the five-year"},{"startTime":391.84,"endTime":400.16,"body":"grant in fiscal year 2020. And we received just "},{"startTime":391.84,"endTime":400.16,"body":"a little over $2 million. The funds for the next"},{"startTime":400.16,"endTime":406.88,"body":"five years that we're currently in is specific "},{"startTime":400.16,"endTime":406.88,"body":"just to professional development, training,"},{"startTime":406.88,"endTime":411.84,"body":"and the workshops and things that we're offering. "},{"startTime":406.88,"endTime":411.84,"body":"So, the first five years, we purchased simulation"},{"startTime":411.84,"endTime":416.56,"body":"equipment, materials, and supplies. For the next "},{"startTime":411.84,"endTime":416.56,"body":"five years, because all of the schools received"},{"startTime":416.56,"endTime":423.52,"body":"equipment, material, supplies, we have not needed "},{"startTime":416.56,"endTime":423.52,"body":"to provide funding for those moving forward."},{"startTime":424.93,"endTime":431.28,"body":"Monique, that is fantastic. And you know, I also "},{"startTime":424.93,"endTime":431.28,"body":"appreciate you sharing sort of how the funding"},{"startTime":431.28,"endTime":438.56,"body":"was used to support this project in its first five "},{"startTime":431.28,"endTime":438.56,"body":"years and now how it's kind of being scaffolded to"},{"startTime":438.56,"endTime":444.24,"body":"go beyond the basics. Right. So whenever we think "},{"startTime":438.56,"endTime":444.24,"body":"about Maslow's Hierarchy, we're like we need food and water"},{"startTime":444.24,"endTime":450.96,"body":"and basic right sustenance. But and that's kind "},{"startTime":444.24,"endTime":450.96,"body":"of what it seems like that first five years was"},{"startTime":450.96,"endTime":456.96,"body":"like, let's get equipment and some professional "},{"startTime":450.96,"endTime":456.96,"body":"development and really connect simulation to"},{"startTime":456.96,"endTime":463.52,"body":"the evidence for teaching. And now it sounds "},{"startTime":456.96,"endTime":463.52,"body":"like you guys these next five years are really,"},{"startTime":463.52,"endTime":467.68,"body":"you're really extending beyond to reach more "},{"startTime":463.52,"endTime":467.68,"body":"people with that professional development"},{"startTime":467.68,"endTime":474.16,"body":"piece. Absolutely training. And so the focus in "},{"startTime":467.68,"endTime":474.16,"body":"the first five years was really on in terms of"},{"startTime":474.16,"endTime":480.48,"body":"education and professional development. It was "},{"startTime":474.16,"endTime":480.48,"body":"for academics and for our hospital partners. And"},{"startTime":480.48,"endTime":486.56,"body":"so if you were a staff educator or someone in the "},{"startTime":480.48,"endTime":486.56,"body":"hospital, many of our hospitals have simulation"},{"startTime":486.56,"endTime":493.2,"body":"centers so that they can onboard their new f their "},{"startTime":486.56,"endTime":493.2,"body":"new staff as well as to do their annual trainings."},{"startTime":493.2,"endTime":500.88,"body":"And so we wanted to include them so they could "},{"startTime":493.2,"endTime":500.88,"body":"have best practices with the fundamental pedagogy"},{"startTime":500.88,"endTime":508.48,"body":"of simulation as well as how to implement it and "},{"startTime":500.88,"endTime":508.48,"body":"how to evaluate it. Fortunately for our academic"},{"startTime":508.48,"endTime":514.48,"body":"partners they were recipients of the equipment "},{"startTime":508.48,"endTime":514.48,"body":"but the hospitals were not. So because we saw"},{"startTime":514.48,"endTime":519.52,"body":"that there was a greater need in academic settings "},{"startTime":514.48,"endTime":519.52,"body":"for that simulation equipment and materials and"},{"startTime":519.52,"endTime":527.12,"body":"things like that. Yeah that's fantastic. And you "},{"startTime":519.52,"endTime":527.12,"body":"know when you think about this you know kind of"},{"startTime":527.12,"endTime":533.12,"body":"the theme we have sort of two themes for this "},{"startTime":527.12,"endTime":533.12,"body":"conversation. One of which is the consortium"},{"startTime":533.12,"endTime":541.44,"body":"piece of really creating this collective body of "},{"startTime":533.12,"endTime":541.44,"body":"nurse educators and partners and even probably"},{"startTime":541.44,"endTime":548.491,"body":"interprofessionals on some level to create "},{"startTime":541.44,"endTime":548.491,"body":"this network where people can share resources"},{"startTime":548.491,"endTime":556.24,"body":"access resources, get development really to help "},{"startTime":548.491,"endTime":556.24,"body":"move their programs forward and really ultimately"},{"startTime":556.24,"endTime":561.12,"body":"make better graduates. Right. Yes. To do this "},{"startTime":556.24,"endTime":561.12,"body":"better handoff to the hospitals and our clinical"},{"startTime":561.12,"endTime":566.24,"body":"partners. The other part of this conversation, "},{"startTime":561.12,"endTime":566.24,"body":"the theme really is around celebrating the year"},{"startTime":566.24,"endTime":572.8,"body":"of the nurse educator. And I think what better way "},{"startTime":566.24,"endTime":572.8,"body":"to celebrate that than really discuss this part"},{"startTime":572.8,"endTime":579.2,"body":"these partnerships and these collaborative efforts "},{"startTime":572.8,"endTime":579.2,"body":"in the form of a consortium. Yeah. So I'm just"},{"startTime":579.2,"endTime":583.84,"body":"wondering if you can just share a little bit about "},{"startTime":579.2,"endTime":583.84,"body":"how in your in your view in your perspective,"},{"startTime":583.84,"endTime":590.88,"body":"how you think these this consortium really helps "},{"startTime":583.84,"endTime":590.88,"body":"to celebrate the achievements and accomplishments"},{"startTime":590.88,"endTime":597.44,"body":"of the nurse educator kind of from a broad "},{"startTime":590.88,"endTime":597.44,"body":"perspective. Absolutely. So well the first"},{"startTime":597.44,"endTime":603.52,"body":"thing is we have such great power in numbers. So, "},{"startTime":597.44,"endTime":603.52,"body":"if if we're going out and if it's some something"},{"startTime":603.52,"endTime":608.64,"body":"as simple as working with a vendor to say, \"I "},{"startTime":603.52,"endTime":608.64,"body":"would like to purchase a piece of equipment.\""},{"startTime":608.64,"endTime":614.96,"body":"If I'm going to that vendor and saying, \"I need "},{"startTime":608.64,"endTime":614.96,"body":"23 pieces of equipment versus I need one.\" We"},{"startTime":614.96,"endTime":621.36,"body":"can definitely get a better deal. We can get a "},{"startTime":614.96,"endTime":621.36,"body":"lot more resources. We can get better warranties"},{"startTime":621.36,"endTime":627.76,"body":"because we're doing this as a collective with "},{"startTime":621.36,"endTime":627.76,"body":"others. So that was one of the huge benefits."},{"startTime":627.76,"endTime":634.0,"body":"faculty and staff within our academic settings "},{"startTime":627.76,"endTime":634.0,"body":"and our hospital-based educators. We were able to"},{"startTime":634.0,"endTime":638.64,"body":"identify what are the best practices, "},{"startTime":634.0,"endTime":638.64,"body":"what is the pedagogy with simulation,"},{"startTime":638.64,"endTime":644.24,"body":"what equipment materials are needed. So we were "},{"startTime":638.64,"endTime":644.24,"body":"looking in and tapping into that expertise,"},{"startTime":644.24,"endTime":652.56,"body":"but then we needed to work together to make sure "},{"startTime":644.24,"endTime":652.56,"body":"that we could operationalize it. So as we worked"},{"startTime":652.56,"endTime":656.96,"body":"together the first step was to make sure that we "},{"startTime":652.56,"endTime":656.96,"body":"had the infrastructure in place and we had the"},{"startTime":656.96,"endTime":662.64,"body":"funding. So we built the consortium and the beauty "},{"startTime":656.96,"endTime":662.64,"body":"of our consortium is that we also have a steering"},{"startTime":662.64,"endTime":668.16,"body":"committee and with our steering committee we made "},{"startTime":662.64,"endTime":668.16,"body":"sure that we have representation from every region"},{"startTime":668.16,"endTime":673.84,"body":"within the state of Maryland because Maryland is "},{"startTime":668.16,"endTime":673.84,"body":"a unique state. We have the eastern shore, we have"},{"startTime":673.84,"endTime":679.36,"body":"the western where our mountains are. We have very "},{"startTime":673.84,"endTime":679.36,"body":"urban areas and then we have very rural areas. So"},{"startTime":679.36,"endTime":685.04,"body":"we wanted to make sure that we had on our steering "},{"startTime":679.36,"endTime":685.04,"body":"committee representation from each of the regions"},{"startTime":685.04,"endTime":690.24,"body":"of the state. We also wanted to make sure that "},{"startTime":685.04,"endTime":690.24,"body":"we had representation not just from our community"},{"startTime":690.24,"endTime":694.96,"body":"colleges but from our university partners as "},{"startTime":690.24,"endTime":694.96,"body":"well. And in the state of Maryland, we have"},{"startTime":694.96,"endTime":700.08,"body":"public institutions, we have private institutions, "},{"startTime":694.96,"endTime":700.08,"body":"we have predominantly white institutions, we have"},{"startTime":700.08,"endTime":704.8,"body":"historically black colleges and universities, and "},{"startTime":700.08,"endTime":704.8,"body":"then we have our community colleges. So we also"},{"startTime":704.8,"endTime":710.64,"body":"made sure that we had those representatives on "},{"startTime":704.8,"endTime":710.64,"body":"our steering committee so that every place whether"},{"startTime":710.64,"endTime":716.56,"body":"it's a hospital or it's an academic institution "},{"startTime":710.64,"endTime":716.56,"body":"that we had a voice so that the consortium could"},{"startTime":716.56,"endTime":722.16,"body":"have equal representation. So when you look "},{"startTime":716.56,"endTime":722.16,"body":"at building a initiative like this you want to"},{"startTime":722.16,"endTime":727.68,"body":"make sure at the foundational level that you have "},{"startTime":722.16,"endTime":727.68,"body":"the team in place that can put this work together"},{"startTime":727.68,"endTime":733.92,"body":"because again one or two people cannot possibly "},{"startTime":727.68,"endTime":733.92,"body":"do this heavy work on their own. So to have,"},{"startTime":733.92,"endTime":739.6,"body":"you know, the steering committee, to have buy-in "},{"startTime":733.92,"endTime":739.6,"body":"from all of our university partners and our"},{"startTime":739.6,"endTime":745.28,"body":"hospital affiliates and from our community college "},{"startTime":739.6,"endTime":745.28,"body":"representatives, it's just been invaluable for us."},{"startTime":745.28,"endTime":751.04,"body":"And so once we all got together, sat in a room, "},{"startTime":745.28,"endTime":751.04,"body":"hey, this is what we're going to do. It's going"},{"startTime":751.04,"endTime":757.76,"body":"to benefit all of us. We had very, very little "},{"startTime":751.04,"endTime":757.76,"body":"trouble getting by in. Everyone was on board. And"},{"startTime":757.76,"endTime":764.16,"body":"the steamboat just kept going and the train just "},{"startTime":757.76,"endTime":764.16,"body":"kept going. We were just so excited about how we"},{"startTime":764.16,"endTime":769.76,"body":"were able to roll out courses, how we were able "},{"startTime":764.16,"endTime":769.76,"body":"to go onsite to our schools and to our hospitals"},{"startTime":769.76,"endTime":775.44,"body":"to offer workshops that were tailored just for "},{"startTime":769.76,"endTime":775.44,"body":"their needs. So I mean it's just been it's been"},{"startTime":775.44,"endTime":781.12,"body":"an amazing journey because again we're doing "},{"startTime":775.44,"endTime":781.12,"body":"this as a collective versus just looking at it"},{"startTime":781.12,"endTime":786.32,"body":"individually. So and that and that's the beauty of "},{"startTime":781.12,"endTime":786.32,"body":"a nurse educator. a nurse educator rolls up their"},{"startTime":786.32,"endTime":792.24,"body":"sleeves and they say, \"Hey, I'm here. I'm bringing "},{"startTime":786.32,"endTime":792.24,"body":"my expertise and as I'm working with students"},{"startTime":792.24,"endTime":797.36,"body":"and I'm working with my colleagues, everyone's "},{"startTime":792.24,"endTime":797.36,"body":"bringing their best.\" So, at the end of the day,"},{"startTime":797.36,"endTime":805.04,"body":"what we really care about is providing skilled, "},{"startTime":797.36,"endTime":805.04,"body":"qualified nurses at the bedside, in people's"},{"startTime":805.04,"endTime":810.72,"body":"homes, wherever there's a need for nurses. And as "},{"startTime":805.04,"endTime":810.72,"body":"we know, there is a humongous nursing shortage."},{"startTime":810.72,"endTime":819.2,"body":"And so, I'm so fortunate that the consortium has "},{"startTime":810.72,"endTime":819.2,"body":"been in place because none of us had predicted the"},{"startTime":819.2,"endTime":824.16,"body":"pandemic was going to come in the way that it did. "},{"startTime":819.2,"endTime":824.16,"body":"Many of us thought, oh, we'll be out of school for"},{"startTime":824.16,"endTime":829.76,"body":"two weeks and then it ended up being almost two "},{"startTime":824.16,"endTime":829.76,"body":"years. And so to be able to use simulation whether"},{"startTime":829.76,"endTime":836.8,"body":"it's in person or virtual whether it was to do "},{"startTime":829.76,"endTime":836.8,"body":"in-person lectures or to do virtual lectures to"},{"startTime":836.8,"endTime":842.72,"body":"have our consortium in place to have a lot of "},{"startTime":836.8,"endTime":842.72,"body":"those resources even before the pandemic hit"},{"startTime":842.72,"endTime":850.24,"body":"and having our state tapped into those resources. "},{"startTime":842.72,"endTime":850.24,"body":"There was a small learning curve so that those you"},{"startTime":850.24,"endTime":856.4,"body":"know educational experiences did not have to stop. "},{"startTime":850.24,"endTime":856.4,"body":"nursing education did not have to stop during the"},{"startTime":856.4,"endTime":862.0,"body":"pandemic. So that's one one area. It's also the emotional intelligence"},{"startTime":1113.36,"endTime":1119.04,"body":"that needs to go into it. And so, how best can "},{"startTime":1113.36,"endTime":1119.04,"body":"you put someone in a situation that they've never"},{"startTime":1119.04,"endTime":1125.84,"body":"been in and still keep them safe other than in "},{"startTime":1119.04,"endTime":1125.84,"body":"simulation? So, we were able to tap into doing"},{"startTime":1125.84,"endTime":1132.24,"body":"those role plays and doing those scenarios in a "},{"startTime":1125.84,"endTime":1132.24,"body":"in a simulated safe environment where we really"},{"startTime":1132.24,"endTime":1138.24,"body":"not focused in on can you insert a Foley catheter "},{"startTime":1132.24,"endTime":1138.24,"body":"or can you insert an NG tube, but what do you have"},{"startTime":1138.24,"endTime":1144.48,"body":"to do when your patient is there, their family "},{"startTime":1138.24,"endTime":1144.48,"body":"cannot come in to see them, you have on all of"},{"startTime":1144.48,"endTime":1149.6,"body":"your personal protective equipment, you have to "},{"startTime":1144.48,"endTime":1149.6,"body":"cluster your care, you have to think about all"},{"startTime":1149.6,"endTime":1155.2,"body":"of that emotional intelligence that you need to "},{"startTime":1149.6,"endTime":1155.2,"body":"really still provide that compassionate care. How do you still "},{"startTime":1171.84,"endTime":1177.28,"body":"provide that compassionate care? The other area"},{"startTime":1177.28,"endTime":1183.92,"body":"that we tap into with our consortium is we talk "},{"startTime":1177.28,"endTime":1183.92,"body":"with our academic partners. And so again, we have"},{"startTime":1183.92,"endTime":1189.28,"body":"our steering committee, but we also have in the "},{"startTime":1183.92,"endTime":1189.28,"body":"state of Maryland, we have our deans and directors"},{"startTime":1189.28,"endTime":1195.04,"body":"group where they meet quarterly. And in that "},{"startTime":1189.28,"endTime":1195.04,"body":"group, it's all of our university and community"},{"startTime":1195.04,"endTime":1201.12,"body":"college deans and directors. We meet to talk about "},{"startTime":1195.04,"endTime":1201.12,"body":"what are the unique needs within our state that"},{"startTime":1201.12,"endTime":1205.92,"body":"have to specifically do with academia. And so that's the 16"},{"startTime":1218.32,"endTime":1223.68,"body":"community colleges. And so the deans and directors "},{"startTime":1218.32,"endTime":1223.68,"body":"that represent the community colleges, we meet on"},{"startTime":1223.68,"endTime":1231.84,"body":"a monthly basis as well. So, as we're tapping into "},{"startTime":1223.68,"endTime":1231.84,"body":"our MCSRC consortium, we're tapping into our deans"},{"startTime":1231.84,"endTime":1236.56,"body":"and directors group, we're tapping into our MAADN"},{"startTime":1231.84,"endTime":1236.56,"body":"group, we're tapping into our hospitals. You know as I listen and reflect on"},{"startTime":1265.2,"endTime":1270.24,"body":"this conversation I think there may be listeners "},{"startTime":1265.2,"endTime":1270.24,"body":"out there who are thinking about or wanting to"},{"startTime":1270.24,"endTime":1275.12,"body":"establish a consortium where they are. I know a "},{"startTime":1270.24,"endTime":1275.12,"body":"lot of states already have simulation consortiums,"},{"startTime":1275.12,"endTime":1279.12,"body":"but I think a lot of folks out there are looking "},{"startTime":1275.12,"endTime":1279.12,"body":"to establish consortiums for other reasons such"},{"startTime":1279.12,"endTime":1285.04,"body":"as interprofessional education or student success "},{"startTime":1279.12,"endTime":1285.04,"body":"or practice readiness or just in general building"},{"startTime":1285.04,"endTime":1290.48,"body":"partnerships between entities that are typically "},{"startTime":1285.04,"endTime":1290.48,"body":"siloed, right? Academia and practice. And so for"},{"startTime":1290.48,"endTime":1296.24,"body":"those folks and expanding our scope here, I'm "},{"startTime":1290.48,"endTime":1296.24,"body":"curious to hear what are some lessons learned"},{"startTime":1296.24,"endTime":1300.96,"body":"that you would share with them, some landmines. "},{"startTime":1296.24,"endTime":1300.96,"body":"One of my favorite questions to ask when I build"},{"startTime":1300.96,"endTime":1304.4,"body":"programs or I'm involved in it is to go to people "},{"startTime":1300.96,"endTime":1304.4,"body":"who have walked that path and say, \"What do you"},{"startTime":1304.4,"endTime":1308.32,"body":"wish you had known when you started out?\" And "},{"startTime":1304.4,"endTime":1308.32,"body":"what would you share with someone walking this"},{"startTime":1308.32,"endTime":1312.88,"body":"path now? There's always landmines and what are "},{"startTime":1308.32,"endTime":1312.88,"body":"they? And so I'm curious to hear your thoughts"},{"startTime":1312.88,"endTime":1317.76,"body":"on that. So in the state of Maryland,"},{"startTime":1329.76,"endTime":1334.24,"body":"we have another affinity group, the Maryland "},{"startTime":1329.76,"endTime":1334.24,"body":"Organization of Nurse Leaders, MONL, is what"},{"startTime":1334.24,"endTime":1340.64,"body":"they're called, and it's usually the nursing deans "},{"startTime":1334.24,"endTime":1340.64,"body":"and directors are invited to participate in this"},{"startTime":1340.64,"endTime":1346.08,"body":"group, but it's really the chief nursing officers "},{"startTime":1340.64,"endTime":1346.08,"body":"of the hospitals in the state of Maryland. And so"},{"startTime":1346.08,"endTime":1352.64,"body":"looking at our nurse residency collaborative is "},{"startTime":1346.08,"endTime":1352.64,"body":"a perfect example of that program. So we had our"},{"startTime":1352.64,"endTime":1358.48,"body":"our Maryland Clinical Resource Consortium. We now "},{"startTime":1352.64,"endTime":1358.48,"body":"have our nurse residency collaborative. And it's"},{"startTime":1358.48,"endTime":1363.68,"body":"again looking at the successes of what these other "},{"startTime":1358.48,"endTime":1363.68,"body":"consortiums have done. Looking at what models they"},{"startTime":1363.68,"endTime":1368.88,"body":"have put in place. How did you build your steering "},{"startTime":1363.68,"endTime":1368.88,"body":"committee? How did you develop what your goals"},{"startTime":1368.88,"endTime":1373.84,"body":"and your outcomes are going to be? What's your "},{"startTime":1368.88,"endTime":1373.84,"body":"strategic plan going to be? And again talking"},{"startTime":1373.84,"endTime":1379.12,"body":"with people who are already doing that work so "},{"startTime":1373.84,"endTime":1379.12,"body":"that you're not reinventing the wheel. We do not"},{"startTime":1379.12,"endTime":1385.68,"body":"need to start these things from scratch. But we "},{"startTime":1379.12,"endTime":1385.68,"body":"need to, you know, really tap into and everyone"},{"startTime":1385.68,"endTime":1391.36,"body":"that is involved in consortiums that I've talked "},{"startTime":1385.68,"endTime":1391.36,"body":"to in other areas, whether it's in Texas or it's"},{"startTime":1391.36,"endTime":1397.52,"body":"in Oregon or it's in Kansas or Kentucky, they "},{"startTime":1391.36,"endTime":1397.52,"body":"are always so willing and ready to share what"},{"startTime":1397.52,"endTime":1402.24,"body":"it is that they're doing. And just like with "},{"startTime":1397.52,"endTime":1402.24,"body":"us with our MCSRC, whatever knowledge we have,"},{"startTime":1402.24,"endTime":1407.84,"body":"we put it on our website. We make sure that, you "},{"startTime":1402.24,"endTime":1407.84,"body":"know, it's open and free for the public domain."},{"startTime":1407.84,"endTime":1414.64,"body":"Because we ultimately if one of us win we all "},{"startTime":1407.84,"endTime":1414.64,"body":"should be winning. And then connecting that "},{"startTime":1456.0,"endTime":1461.76,"body":"back to what you said earlier in the conversation"},{"startTime":1461.76,"endTime":1470.88,"body":"about how this consortium, this collective body "},{"startTime":1461.76,"endTime":1470.88,"body":"of nurse educators was so well established before"},{"startTime":1470.88,"endTime":1479.44,"body":"the unknown unknown came about. And you know, I think as nurses in"},{"startTime":1588.16,"endTime":1593.04,"body":"clinical settings, we like to pride ourselves on "},{"startTime":1588.16,"endTime":1593.04,"body":"being agile and flexible and, you know, turning on"},{"startTime":1593.04,"endTime":1597.6,"body":"a dot. I'm trying to avoid the word pivot because "},{"startTime":1593.04,"endTime":1597.6,"body":"I think we've, you know, beaten that word to death"},{"startTime":1597.6,"endTime":1601.68,"body":"over, you know, the last two years. Yeah. Yeah. You know, I'm thinking it might be "},{"startTime":1638.56,"endTime":1646.88,"body":"time to ask some rapid fire questions. Okay. If you were to write a memoir,"},{"startTime":1653.84,"endTime":1660.72,"body":"what would you title the book? Sure. It was 11 of us"},{"startTime":1660.72,"endTime":1667.28,"body":"in my family unit. 11 ladies in my family, four "},{"startTime":1660.72,"endTime":1667.28,"body":"generations, my grandmother, my mother, myself,"},{"startTime":1667.28,"endTime":1674.08,"body":"and my daughter and we all went for Mother's "},{"startTime":1667.28,"endTime":1674.08,"body":"Day to go to Curacao. And so in Curacao they"},{"startTime":1674.08,"endTime":1679.6,"body":"their native language is Papiamentu. They speak "},{"startTime":1674.08,"endTime":1679.6,"body":"Dutch and they speak English and Spanish and"},{"startTime":1679.6,"endTime":1685.84,"body":"French and so they speak a lot of languages there. "},{"startTime":1679.6,"endTime":1685.84,"body":"But Papiamentu is their language and they have a"},{"startTime":1685.84,"endTime":1693.28,"body":"phrase or word that's dushi, d-u-s-h-i, Dushi and "},{"startTime":1685.84,"endTime":1693.28,"body":"it means everything that's good. Everything that"},{"startTime":1693.28,"endTime":1699.44,"body":"if you have a good event like today we're having "},{"startTime":1693.28,"endTime":1699.44,"body":"a great webinar, I would say this is dushi. If we"},{"startTime":1699.44,"endTime":1703.92,"body":"had went to lunch and the food was delicious, "},{"startTime":1699.44,"endTime":1703.92,"body":"they would say dushi. And so if I had to name"},{"startTime":1703.92,"endTime":1710.56,"body":"my memoir, I would call it Dushi's Journey. "},{"startTime":1703.92,"endTime":1710.56,"body":"because life does give you some some sad days,"},{"startTime":1710.56,"endTime":1715.76,"body":"but if you look at your life in totality, you're "},{"startTime":1710.56,"endTime":1715.76,"body":"always looking for the joys and the goods of"},{"startTime":1715.76,"endTime":1723.44,"body":"things and the goods truly always outweigh the "},{"startTime":1715.76,"endTime":1723.44,"body":"bad. So I would call it Dushi's Journey. That"},{"startTime":1723.44,"endTime":1729.92,"body":"is awesome. Rachel, I don't know about you, "},{"startTime":1723.44,"endTime":1729.92,"body":"but I'm putting that word in my pocket and I'm"},{"startTime":1729.92,"endTime":1736.16,"body":"pulling that out. So what is on the top of your "},{"startTime":1729.92,"endTime":1736.16,"body":"reading list right now for fun? Oh, for fun? Well,"},{"startTime":1736.16,"endTime":1741.76,"body":"I don't know if it's necessarily for fun, but "},{"startTime":1736.16,"endTime":1741.76,"body":"Viola Davis has a new book out called Finding Me,"},{"startTime":1741.76,"endTime":1746.24,"body":"and so I've been kind of thumbing through it. I "},{"startTime":1741.76,"endTime":1746.24,"body":"haven't been able to really do a deep dive and"},{"startTime":1746.24,"endTime":1752.48,"body":"dissect it other than kind of thumbing through it. "},{"startTime":1746.24,"endTime":1752.48,"body":"But I really like reading about others memoirs."},{"startTime":1752.48,"endTime":1757.84,"body":"You know, Michelle Obama's Becoming was such "},{"startTime":1752.48,"endTime":1757.84,"body":"a phenomenal book. So, as I hear and read about"},{"startTime":1757.84,"endTime":1761.68,"body":"others and their memoirs, so I thought it was "},{"startTime":1757.84,"endTime":1761.68,"body":"quite funny that the first question was like,"},{"startTime":1761.68,"endTime":1767.12,"body":"what would I name my memoirs? But right "},{"startTime":1761.68,"endTime":1767.12,"body":"now, I'm I have Viola Davis's Finding Me at the"},{"startTime":1767.12,"endTime":1774.64,"body":"top of the list. That's great. You know, that "},{"startTime":1767.12,"endTime":1774.64,"body":"same book keeps coming up on my for you list. So,"},{"startTime":1774.64,"endTime":1782.56,"body":"now I'm gonna I'm gonna hit on it for sure. So, "},{"startTime":1774.64,"endTime":1782.56,"body":"thank you. What is your favorite quote? Sure. So,"},{"startTime":1782.56,"endTime":1788.24,"body":"I don't know who this quote is from. It's an "},{"startTime":1782.56,"endTime":1788.24,"body":"anonymous quote. But it says, \"I love you. You"},{"startTime":1788.24,"endTime":1795.44,"body":"You're probably thinking you don't even know me. "},{"startTime":1788.24,"endTime":1795.44,"body":"But if people can hate for no reason, I can love.\""},{"startTime":1795.44,"endTime":1803.68,"body":"So that is powerful. It is. It really is. And so I "},{"startTime":1795.44,"endTime":1803.68,"body":"see myself as a servant leader here at my place of"},{"startTime":1803.68,"endTime":1810.4,"body":"employment and the work that I do in my community. "},{"startTime":1803.68,"endTime":1810.4,"body":"And in order to be a servant leader, you are yes,"},{"startTime":1810.4,"endTime":1814.88,"body":"taking care of yourself, making sure your cup "},{"startTime":1810.4,"endTime":1814.88,"body":"is full that you can then pour into the lives"},{"startTime":1814.88,"endTime":1821.84,"body":"of others. But it is my sole focus to make sure "},{"startTime":1814.88,"endTime":1821.84,"body":"that I'm pulling those behind me and pulling those"},{"startTime":1821.84,"endTime":1828.56,"body":"who walk beside me to help meet them meet their "},{"startTime":1821.84,"endTime":1828.56,"body":"goals and their objectives in life. And so again,"},{"startTime":1828.56,"endTime":1833.92,"body":"you don't necessarily have to know someone to "},{"startTime":1828.56,"endTime":1833.92,"body":"love them. Because if hey, if people can hate,"},{"startTime":1833.92,"endTime":1842.88,"body":"I can love. So yep. So good. That is so good. "},{"startTime":1833.92,"endTime":1842.88,"body":"Yeah. If you could have dinner with one person,"},{"startTime":1842.88,"endTime":1849.12,"body":"dead or alive, who would it be? You know, I thought about,"},{"startTime":1849.12,"endTime":1853.6,"body":"you know, some of the most famous people and, you "},{"startTime":1849.12,"endTime":1853.6,"body":"know, that are living and I thought about some"},{"startTime":1853.6,"endTime":1862.72,"body":"people who have gone on. It's with on her shoulders I do "},{"startTime":1862.72,"endTime":1869.6,"body":"stand. And so, she is the first African-American"},{"startTime":1869.6,"endTime":1876.64,"body":"nurse. And so I would really like to sit and talk "},{"startTime":1869.6,"endTime":1876.64,"body":"with her and just to hear what her journey was"},{"startTime":1876.64,"endTime":1882.96,"body":"like and you know how she took the principles of "},{"startTime":1876.64,"endTime":1882.96,"body":"Florence Nightingale and then just made a lovely"},{"startTime":1882.96,"endTime":1892.0,"body":"career of her own. So yeah that is wonderful. Well "},{"startTime":1882.96,"endTime":1892.0,"body":"you know this entire conversation Monique has"},{"startTime":1892.0,"endTime":1898.96,"body":"I said it before and I'll say it again has been "},{"startTime":1892.0,"endTime":1898.96,"body":"sincerely inspirational. I feel like I've learned"},{"startTime":1898.96,"endTime":1907.04,"body":"some really fantastic things and things I can take "},{"startTime":1898.96,"endTime":1907.04,"body":"with me into my own nursing education practice,"},{"startTime":1907.04,"endTime":1912.64,"body":"into my work, into my into my world. And so "},{"startTime":1931.68,"endTime":1937.52,"body":"when I realized that one day that as a nurse,"},{"startTime":1937.52,"endTime":1943.2,"body":"I knew I could care for my four or five patients. "},{"startTime":1937.52,"endTime":1943.2,"body":"I was a pediatric nurse. I did hematology oncology"},{"startTime":1943.2,"endTime":1947.84,"body":"and enrolled expand and did, you know, mother baby "},{"startTime":1943.2,"endTime":1947.84,"body":"and labor and delivery and all of those things."},{"startTime":1947.84,"endTime":1953.04,"body":"And I could impact the patients lives, those "},{"startTime":1947.84,"endTime":1953.04,"body":"four or five patients I would have each day."},{"startTime":1953.04,"endTime":1958.08,"body":"But then when I became a clinical instructor, "},{"startTime":1953.04,"endTime":1958.08,"body":"I had eight students and they had four or five"},{"startTime":1958.08,"endTime":1963.92,"body":"patients. And so that particular day, we were "},{"startTime":1958.08,"endTime":1963.92,"body":"impacting the lives of some 40 patients. And"},{"startTime":1963.92,"endTime":1968.88,"body":"now that you know when you're in academia and you "},{"startTime":1963.92,"endTime":1968.88,"body":"have a class full of a hundred students and you"},{"startTime":1968.88,"endTime":1974.48,"body":"have now that I'm the dean of health sciences and "},{"startTime":1968.88,"endTime":1974.48,"body":"director of nursing, I have 500 nursing students."},{"startTime":1974.48,"endTime":1980.56,"body":"And I think about how they're impacting not "},{"startTime":1974.48,"endTime":1980.56,"body":"just their family's lives, but the lives of"},{"startTime":1980.56,"endTime":1984.8,"body":"the people they're touching in the community. And "},{"startTime":1980.56,"endTime":1984.8,"body":"so if you're thinking about it, you want to be a"},{"startTime":1984.8,"endTime":1991.36,"body":"nurse educator, I implore you, please connect "},{"startTime":1984.8,"endTime":1991.36,"body":"with your local university, your un your local"},{"startTime":1991.36,"endTime":1996.32,"body":"community college. There is a great need for nurse "},{"startTime":1991.36,"endTime":1996.32,"body":"educators. And you don't have to know it all. You"},{"startTime":1996.32,"endTime":2000.88,"body":"don't even have to, you know, know much. We will "},{"startTime":1996.32,"endTime":2000.88,"body":"train you and prepare you so that you can be the"},{"startTime":2000.88,"endTime":2006.56,"body":"best educator to meet the needs of those students "},{"startTime":2000.88,"endTime":2006.56,"body":"in your area. It takes a special person to be a"},{"startTime":2006.56,"endTime":2012.72,"body":"nurse and it takes an even special person to be a "},{"startTime":2006.56,"endTime":2012.72,"body":"nurse educator.
