I appreciate "},{"startTime":82.32,"endTime":86.88,"body":"the opportunity."},{"startTime":87.44,"endTime":94.08,"body":"intriguing and definitely needed and I'm glad "},{"startTime":87.44,"endTime":94.08,"body":"that someone's doing this work so I will ask you  "},{"startTime":94.08,"endTime":98.56,"body":"to please summarize the purpose of this study "},{"startTime":94.08,"endTime":98.56,"body":"and just briefly your choice of the theory of  "},{"startTime":98.56,"endTime":105.52,"body":"planned behaviors as a theoretical framework."},{"startTime":98.56,"endTime":105.52,"body":"What we wanted to do with this study was to find out  "},{"startTime":106.4,"endTime":114.0,"body":"why baccalaureate nursing faculty are "},{"startTime":106.4,"endTime":114.0,"body":"generally not teaching LGBTQ content in the  "},{"startTime":114.0,"endTime":118.72,"body":"undergraduate pre-licensure programs. There "},{"startTime":114.0,"endTime":118.72,"body":"have been a few studies over the years that  "},{"startTime":118.72,"endTime":125.52,"body":"have documented that there's a lack of content, but "},{"startTime":118.72,"endTime":125.52,"body":"not a lot that's told us why that is. With  "},{"startTime":125.52,"endTime":131.68,"body":"this study we were hoping to identify perhaps "},{"startTime":125.52,"endTime":131.68,"body":"the best places we could aim our efforts to  "},{"startTime":133.92,"endTime":138.32,"body":"improve kind of the uptake of this type "},{"startTime":133.92,"endTime":138.32,"body":"of curriculum in undergraduate programs. "},{"startTime":138.96,"endTime":144.4,"body":"We specifically chose the theory of planned "},{"startTime":138.96,"endTime":144.4,"body":"behavior for a number of reasons. It's widely  "},{"startTime":144.4,"endTime":150.48,"body":"used in behavioral research so it's got a good "},{"startTime":144.4,"endTime":150.48,"body":"research base both inside health care and outside  "},{"startTime":151.76,"endTime":158.48,"body":"and it provides a good detailed method to develop "},{"startTime":151.76,"endTime":158.48,"body":"instruments to measure certain behaviors and the  "},{"startTime":158.48,"endTime":164.24,"body":"factors that  influence those behaviors. What we "},{"startTime":158.48,"endTime":164.24,"body":"did like about the theory of planned behavior was  "},{"startTime":164.24,"endTime":169.6,"body":"that it went beyond just measuring attitudes. "},{"startTime":164.24,"endTime":169.6,"body":"So sometimes when we look at what influences  "},{"startTime":169.6,"endTime":175.2,"body":"behavior we look at whether or not somebody "},{"startTime":169.6,"endTime":175.2,"body":"feels positively about the behavior or negatively.  "},{"startTime":175.2,"endTime":181.12,"body":"And while certainly that is impactful in "},{"startTime":175.2,"endTime":181.12,"body":"somebody's decision to, for instance, incorporate  "},{"startTime":181.12,"endTime":185.92,"body":"this content into the curriculum we know it's "},{"startTime":181.12,"endTime":185.92,"body":"not the only thing. The theory of planned  "},{"startTime":185.92,"endTime":191.52,"body":"behavior has a number of variables incorporated "},{"startTime":185.92,"endTime":191.52,"body":"in it, one of them being attitudes toward the  "},{"startTime":191.52,"endTime":196.0,"body":"behavior. So how does somebody feel? Do they feel "},{"startTime":191.52,"endTime":196.0,"body":"like it's a good thing to teach LGBTQ content, "},{"startTime":196.96,"endTime":201.12,"body":"do they feel like the outcomes "},{"startTime":196.96,"endTime":201.12,"body":"in students are worth the effort? "},{"startTime":201.12,"endTime":206.4,"body":"Those types of things are certainly important "},{"startTime":201.12,"endTime":206.4,"body":"but we also know that other outside things are  "},{"startTime":206.4,"endTime":210.24,"body":"going to influence that decision and one of "},{"startTime":206.4,"endTime":210.24,"body":"the things that theory of planned behavior  "},{"startTime":210.24,"endTime":215.36,"body":"incorporates is the idea of subjective norms. What do other people think that you should do? "},{"startTime":216.48,"endTime":221.52,"body":"We know from looking at this theory "},{"startTime":216.48,"endTime":221.52,"body":"that certainly is going to play a big part  "},{"startTime":222.24,"endTime":226.8,"body":"and whether or not somebody's going to decide "},{"startTime":222.24,"endTime":226.8,"body":"to put forth the effort to incorporate this into  "},{"startTime":226.8,"endTime":233.92,"body":"their curriculum so we wanted to make sure that we "},{"startTime":226.8,"endTime":233.92,"body":"included that. Another kind of sub-variable on to  "},{"startTime":233.92,"endTime":238.56,"body":"that is that whether or not somebody is motivated "},{"startTime":233.92,"endTime":238.56,"body":"to comply with those norms. Just because other  "},{"startTime":238.56,"endTime":243.76,"body":"people think you should or should do something, are "},{"startTime":238.56,"endTime":243.76,"body":"you motivated to go along kind of with that or not  "},{"startTime":243.76,"endTime":248.08,"body":"and the theory of planned behavior also tries to "},{"startTime":243.76,"endTime":248.08,"body":"account for that. The last thing that we were  "},{"startTime":248.08,"endTime":252.16,"body":"really interested in was somebody's perceived "},{"startTime":248.08,"endTime":252.16,"body":"behavioral control. Just because somebody  "},{"startTime":252.16,"endTime":257.68,"body":"thinks that a behavior is good to do and thinks "},{"startTime":252.16,"endTime":257.68,"body":"that it will be accepted whether or not they feel  "},{"startTime":257.68,"endTime":262.08,"body":"that they have control over that behavior is going "},{"startTime":257.68,"endTime":262.08,"body":"to also influence whether that behavior is"},{"startTime":262.08,"endTime":267.92,"body":"ultimately carried out. So what we liked about "},{"startTime":262.08,"endTime":267.92,"body":"this theory is that it allowed us to pull in more  "},{"startTime":267.92,"endTime":272.96,"body":"than just attitudes to look at what the norms "},{"startTime":267.92,"endTime":272.96,"body":"were whether or not people were feeling pressure  "},{"startTime":272.96,"endTime":277.68,"body":"one way or the other to incorporate this content "},{"startTime":272.96,"endTime":277.68,"body":"and what kind of control they felt they had.  "},{"startTime":278.56,"endTime":284.08,"body":"We were hopeful that looking at multiple variables "},{"startTime":278.56,"endTime":284.08,"body":"would help us target where our efforts might be  "},{"startTime":284.08,"endTime":292.08,"body":"best placed in intervening. I feel like "},{"startTime":284.08,"endTime":292.08,"body":"historically we focused a lot on changing people's  "},{"startTime":292.08,"endTime":297.76,"body":"attitudes towards the LGBTQ community, you know "},{"startTime":292.08,"endTime":297.76,"body":"the whole winning hearts and minds those types  "},{"startTime":297.76,"endTime":305.12,"body":"of things, but certainly we know that even though "},{"startTime":297.76,"endTime":305.12,"body":"attitudes in some ways have changed the curriculum  "},{"startTime":305.12,"endTime":311.2,"body":"has has not and so what else might be influencing "},{"startTime":305.12,"endTime":311.2,"body":"that decision, where can we aim our efforts so that  "},{"startTime":311.2,"endTime":316.134,"body":"we can make the most impact."},{"startTime":311.2,"endTime":316.134,"body":"To clarify with the theory of planned behavior, the more"},{"startTime":316.134,"endTime":323.92,"body":"positive you are in those different variables such "},{"startTime":316.134,"endTime":323.92,"body":"as attitudes, subjective norms, and control, then in  "},{"startTime":323.92,"endTime":330.88,"body":"theory your increased individual intentions to do "},{"startTime":323.92,"endTime":330.88,"body":"that particular thing that you're looking at and  "},{"startTime":330.88,"endTime":337.04,"body":"bringing attention is a surrogate for actual behavior.  "},{"startTime":330.88,"endTime":337.04,"body":"It's very difficult to measure the actual behavior  "},{"startTime":337.04,"endTime":341.84,"body":"so you have to sit and watch all these people all "},{"startTime":337.04,"endTime":341.84,"body":"the time so you measure their behavioral intension  "},{"startTime":341.84,"endTime":346.96,"body":"and that's their surrogate for that so that was a "},{"startTime":341.84,"endTime":346.96,"body":"great explanation of what they were trying to do  "},{"startTime":346.96,"endTime":352.4,"body":"Your study found generally positive"},{"startTime":346.96,"endTime":352.4,"body":"attitudes and support for"},{"startTime":352.4,"endTime":357.44,"body":"including LGBTQ content but there were "},{"startTime":352.4,"endTime":357.44,"body":"concerns with access to experts and other  "},{"startTime":357.44,"endTime":361.36,"body":"resources kind of the perceived control "},{"startTime":357.44,"endTime":361.36,"body":"variable. Can we explain this and what  "},{"startTime":361.36,"endTime":365.447,"body":"specifically is the takeaway that we "},{"startTime":361.36,"endTime":365.447,"body":"as nurse educators could do tomorrow"},{"startTime":365.447,"endTime":367.44,"body":"in our classrooms based on your research?"},{"startTime":367.44,"endTime":373.36,"body":"We were a little surprised honestly "},{"startTime":367.44,"endTime":373.36,"body":"that attitudes scored as highly as it did."},{"startTime":376.24,"endTime":381.36,"body":"I wonder if we redid this study in the current"},{"startTime":376.24,"endTime":381.36,"body":"climate and where data collection  "},{"startTime":381.36,"endTime":387.28,"body":"for this was a year or two ago how that might "},{"startTime":381.36,"endTime":387.28,"body":"have changed since then, particularly broke out  "},{"startTime":387.28,"endTime":391.76,"body":"different segments of the LGBTQ community because "},{"startTime":387.28,"endTime":391.76,"body":"we're seeing increased attacks especially in the  "},{"startTime":391.76,"endTime":397.12,"body":"trans community. But we did find higher "},{"startTime":391.76,"endTime":397.12,"body":"attitudes than we expected, which was  "},{"startTime":397.12,"endTime":404.0,"body":"somewhat encouraging. What we did find though "},{"startTime":397.12,"endTime":404.0,"body":"were there were a number of barriers. One of the  "},{"startTime":404.8,"endTime":409.12,"body":"primary barriers that we saw was of course "},{"startTime":404.8,"endTime":409.12,"body":"time and I think any nurse educator would  "},{"startTime":410.0,"endTime":414.24,"body":"point to the fact that there's more to teach "},{"startTime":410.0,"endTime":414.24,"body":"every year and not any more time to teach it  "},{"startTime":415.04,"endTime":420.48,"body":"and certainly that was a concern that people may "},{"startTime":415.04,"endTime":420.48,"body":"be more apt to teach this content if they had  "},{"startTime":420.48,"endTime":428.96,"body":"more time to get it in. But other things that "},{"startTime":420.48,"endTime":428.96,"body":"seem to serve as barriers would be tended to be  "},{"startTime":428.96,"endTime":436.72,"body":"things like not having not feeling like you have "},{"startTime":428.96,"endTime":436.72,"body":"the expertise and so it's kind of natural human  "},{"startTime":436.72,"endTime":440.96,"body":"behavior to not want to wade into something if "},{"startTime":436.72,"endTime":440.96,"body":"we don't go prepared to do it and what we saw  "},{"startTime":440.96,"endTime":446.48,"body":"was that some of our nurse educator respondents "},{"startTime":440.96,"endTime":446.48,"body":"just didn't feel competent to teach the content.  "},{"startTime":447.44,"endTime":453.52,"body":"So one item on our study survey was asking whether "},{"startTime":447.44,"endTime":453.52,"body":"or not somebody would be more likely to teach this  "},{"startTime":453.52,"endTime":460.08,"body":"content if they felt competent to do it. 75%of our "},{"startTime":453.52,"endTime":460.08,"body":"respondents agree with that statement that if they  "},{"startTime":460.08,"endTime":462.56,"body":"felt more competent they would "},{"startTime":460.08,"endTime":462.56,"body":"be more likely to incorporate it. "},{"startTime":463.76,"endTime":470.08,"body":"75% additionally identified not just not having that knowledge as a  "},{"startTime":470.08,"endTime":475.84,"body":"base kind of a base level of knowledge to be able "},{"startTime":470.08,"endTime":475.84,"body":"to get this stuff into their into their teaching,  "},{"startTime":477.36,"endTime":482.32,"body":"we also saw that a lot of our respondents, "},{"startTime":477.36,"endTime":482.32,"body":"about 75% again said that if they had some  "},{"startTime":482.32,"endTime":484.8,"body":"training they would be more likely "},{"startTime":482.32,"endTime":484.8,"body":"to teach these types of things."},{"startTime":487.44,"endTime":494.64,"body":"And so being able to see that some of these "},{"startTime":487.44,"endTime":494.64,"body":"barriers we suspected that these were barriers  "},{"startTime":494.64,"endTime":498.64,"body":"but having that kind of confirmed "},{"startTime":494.64,"endTime":498.64,"body":"with some data has been very helpful  "},{"startTime":499.76,"endTime":503.76,"body":"and it's letting us know that maybe if "},{"startTime":499.76,"endTime":503.76,"body":"we can get these resources out to people  "},{"startTime":503.76,"endTime":506.88,"body":"that maybe we won't have such a "},{"startTime":503.76,"endTime":506.88,"body":"hard time getting uptake of it."},{"startTime":509.36,"endTime":512.48,"body":"So the things I believe that we "},{"startTime":509.36,"endTime":512.48,"body":"could kind of take from this is that  "},{"startTime":513.28,"endTime":517.92,"body":"as researchers, as academics, that if we "},{"startTime":513.28,"endTime":517.92,"body":"can get this content into the right hands  "},{"startTime":518.48,"endTime":526.0,"body":"then there may not be as much pushback as we maybe "},{"startTime":518.48,"endTime":526.0,"body":"fear, but we have to get those resources developed.  "},{"startTime":526.56,"endTime":531.04,"body":"Unfortunately there are a few resources out "},{"startTime":526.56,"endTime":531.04,"body":"there that are available and that are free.  "},{"startTime":532.0,"endTime":537.92,"body":"I don't necessarily think that any currently "},{"startTime":532.0,"endTime":537.92,"body":"available resource is the ideal resource but  "},{"startTime":537.92,"endTime":542.08,"body":"I think there are things out there that "},{"startTime":537.92,"endTime":542.08,"body":"nurse educators can go online today and  "},{"startTime":542.08,"endTime":547.44,"body":"find and at least have some base knowledge, "},{"startTime":542.08,"endTime":547.44,"body":"some baseline competency that they can develop  "},{"startTime":548.4,"endTime":552.64,"body":"in order to start putting this into their "},{"startTime":548.4,"endTime":552.64,"body":"curriculum now. Certainly we would advocate for  "},{"startTime":553.84,"endTime":558.48,"body":"hiring LGBTQ people to help inform your "},{"startTime":553.84,"endTime":558.48,"body":"particular curriculum and I think that's a  "},{"startTime":558.48,"endTime":565.12,"body":"great goal and one that I would really encourage "},{"startTime":558.48,"endTime":565.12,"body":"nurse educators to seek out those experts and  "},{"startTime":565.12,"endTime":572.08,"body":"help them co-create content so while we would "},{"startTime":565.12,"endTime":572.08,"body":"like everyone to partner with an LGBTQ health  "},{"startTime":572.08,"endTime":577.36,"body":"expert somebody who is part of the community "},{"startTime":572.08,"endTime":577.36,"body":"because things rapidly change in this community . "},{"startTime":578.72,"endTime":585.92,"body":"We know that it can also be a barrier if the "},{"startTime":578.72,"endTime":585.92,"body":"project seems too big and so if it seems like  "},{"startTime":585.92,"endTime":588.88,"body":"a goal you can't reach you're not going "},{"startTime":585.92,"endTime":588.88,"body":"to, you're not going to get started. "},{"startTime":589.44,"endTime":594.0,"body":"We would encourage people to go to "},{"startTime":589.44,"endTime":594.0,"body":"some of these already available toolkits  "},{"startTime":594.64,"endTime":599.68,"body":"that we've discussed in the article and to start "},{"startTime":594.64,"endTime":599.68,"body":"pulling some activities, case studies, just some  "},{"startTime":599.68,"endTime":605.36,"body":"basic knowledge to start incorporating into things. "},{"startTime":599.68,"endTime":605.36,"body":"It doesn't need to be a class on LGBTQ health.  "},{"startTime":606.56,"endTime":612.8,"body":"In fact, while I love specific standalone classes "},{"startTime":606.56,"endTime":612.8,"body":"on LGBTQ health and I teach one as an elective,  "},{"startTime":613.44,"endTime":618.24,"body":"the students who and the nurses who need that "},{"startTime":613.44,"endTime":618.24,"body":"content are not the ones who are   "},{"startTime":618.24,"endTime":623.04,"body":"most likely to enroll and so we know that"},{"startTime":618.24,"endTime":623.04,"body":"there's anytime we do a training  "},{"startTime":623.04,"endTime":628.32,"body":"we're not necessarily getting the people who "},{"startTime":623.04,"endTime":628.32,"body":"need it the most for a number of reasons, so there  "},{"startTime":628.32,"endTime":633.52,"body":"are some things out there that show you how you "},{"startTime":628.32,"endTime":633.52,"body":"know you can incorporate some LGBTQ topics into  "},{"startTime":634.08,"endTime":638.48,"body":"the curriculum already doing and sometimes it's "},{"startTime":634.08,"endTime":638.48,"body":"as easy as making it part of your case  "},{"startTime":638.48,"endTime":644.64,"body":"study. Maybe not the focus of the case study, but "},{"startTime":638.48,"endTime":644.64,"body":"for instance here at the university where I teach  "},{"startTime":645.68,"endTime":652.32,"body":"we have a postpartum hemorrhage simulation "},{"startTime":645.68,"endTime":652.32,"body":"and that has been revamped so that the  "},{"startTime":654.4,"endTime":660.96,"body":"individual hemorrhaging is non-binary and that "},{"startTime":654.4,"endTime":660.96,"body":"was a pretty easy way to start normalizing  "},{"startTime":661.52,"endTime":665.12,"body":"LGBTQ identities without "},{"startTime":661.52,"endTime":665.12,"body":"revamping the entire simulation."},{"startTime":665.12,"endTime":669.2,"body":"Right, that was a good suggestion, a good example."},{"startTime":669.2,"endTime":673.04,"body":"Yeah I thought it was and I can't take "},{"startTime":669.2,"endTime":673.04,"body":"credit for that. It was a colleague of mine,  "},{"startTime":673.04,"endTime":679.52,"body":"Dr. Karen McPherson who pulled that one off, "},{"startTime":673.04,"endTime":679.52,"body":"but it was a very small change in in her  "},{"startTime":680.24,"endTime":684.64,"body":"simulation that brought up a point for discussion "},{"startTime":680.24,"endTime":684.64,"body":"so when they're debriefing they can talk through  "},{"startTime":684.64,"endTime":689.28,"body":"those things too. How did you feel when you thought "},{"startTime":684.64,"endTime":689.28,"body":"this was your patient's gender identity? Did you have trouble  "},{"startTime":689.28,"endTime":694.0,"body":"with pronouns and some basic things that start "},{"startTime":689.28,"endTime":694.0,"body":"normalizing things for students and so it doesn't  "},{"startTime":694.0,"endTime":701.504,"body":"have to be an entire curriculum overhaul."},{"startTime":694.0,"endTime":701.504,"body":"I like the idea, good examples of the resources in the"},{"startTime":701.504,"endTime":708.0,"body":"article. You mentioned a good example there."},{"startTime":701.504,"endTime":708.0,"body":"And we do only have so much time"},{"startTime":708.0,"endTime":711.84,"body":"for this content. We're kind of content-saturated as it is."},{"startTime":711.84,"endTime":717.76,"body":"So instead of doing what we tend to do "},{"startTime":711.84,"endTime":717.76,"body":"in curriculum and I think from experience  "},{"startTime":717.76,"endTime":724.72,"body":"is tokenizing situations -  dropping them in. Here's "},{"startTime":717.76,"endTime":724.72,"body":"a situation, a case study and then that's the  "},{"startTime":724.72,"endTime":730.96,"body":"only exposure students get to a particular "},{"startTime":724.72,"endTime":730.96,"body":"cultural context of strength or ethnicity  "},{"startTime":731.6,"endTime":738.32,"body":"or in this case nobody can concern the issue is "},{"startTime":731.6,"endTime":738.32,"body":"how do we better thread these things through our  "},{"startTime":738.32,"endTime":742.64,"body":"curriculum so they're just integrated with "},{"startTime":738.32,"endTime":742.64,"body":"the curriculum in a way that's more natural.  "},{"startTime":742.64,"endTime":749.84,"body":"They're not, tomorrow's class is an example on "},{"startTime":742.64,"endTime":749.84,"body":"LGBTQ health care and that's it for the whole  "},{"startTime":749.84,"endTime":754.72,"body":"program right and we can check the box off and "},{"startTime":749.84,"endTime":754.72,"body":"move on from it. We did it, we're moving on to the  "},{"startTime":754.72,"endTime":760.72,"body":"next thing about how to be more intentional."},{"startTime":754.72,"endTime":760.72,"body":"Right, absolutely and what we run the risk of is if"},{"startTime":760.72,"endTime":765.76,"body":"we kind of take this one and done approach "},{"startTime":760.72,"endTime":765.76,"body":"where we've checked the box and said that we've  "},{"startTime":765.76,"endTime":772.48,"body":"done it I don't think that we're doing a great "},{"startTime":765.76,"endTime":772.48,"body":"job capturing the diversity of the community. We've  "},{"startTime":772.48,"endTime":780.08,"body":"given one example and we've run the risk "},{"startTime":772.48,"endTime":780.08,"body":"of presenting the LGBTQ community as a monolith  "},{"startTime":780.08,"endTime":785.68,"body":"and having students walk away with that thinking "},{"startTime":780.08,"endTime":785.68,"body":"that if they can't...if the person that they're  "},{"startTime":785.68,"endTime":792.0,"body":"encountering doesn't meet that box that they have "},{"startTime":785.68,"endTime":792.0,"body":"learned about they don't know what to do  "},{"startTime":792.0,"endTime":795.92,"body":"and so I really advocate for incorporating "},{"startTime":792.0,"endTime":795.92,"body":"these things in the content you're already  "},{"startTime":795.92,"endTime":803.92,"body":"teaching through a number of ways. There's a "},{"startTime":795.92,"endTime":803.92,"body":"good toolkit available online created for actually  "},{"startTime":805.36,"endTime":810.88,"body":"health care providers in Canada in cooperation "},{"startTime":805.36,"endTime":810.88,"body":"with, in partnership with the LGBTQ community  "},{"startTime":810.88,"endTime":817.76,"body":"there.
