So well I think I would like to  "},{"startTime":140.0,"endTime":147.2,"body":"start by just explaining briefly what spurred "},{"startTime":140.0,"endTime":147.2,"body":"me to start this research in the first place.  "},{"startTime":148.4,"endTime":157.44,"body":"As a the primary lecturer for the global health "},{"startTime":148.4,"endTime":157.44,"body":"program at Clemson School of Nursing, whenever I  "},{"startTime":157.44,"endTime":164.72,"body":"would bring up the topic of climate change to my "},{"startTime":157.44,"endTime":164.72,"body":"nursing students they always seemed very surprised  "},{"startTime":164.72,"endTime":172.08,"body":"that I was talking about climate change in the "},{"startTime":164.72,"endTime":172.08,"body":"nursing classes. So I began informally asking  "},{"startTime":172.08,"endTime":177.92,"body":"them, had they heard about climate change in "},{"startTime":172.08,"endTime":177.92,"body":"their other classes? And what I consistently  "},{"startTime":177.92,"endTime":185.44,"body":"heard is that no, they were not hearing about this. "},{"startTime":177.92,"endTime":185.44,"body":"So then i expanded that conversation to colleagues  "},{"startTime":185.44,"endTime":192.0,"body":"and I found the same thing that colleagues were "},{"startTime":185.44,"endTime":192.0,"body":"sort of scratching their head whenever I would say  "},{"startTime":192.0,"endTime":199.12,"body":"do you talk about climate change in your nursing "},{"startTime":192.0,"endTime":199.12,"body":"classes? So from there I decided I really needed to  "},{"startTime":200.0,"endTime":207.6,"body":"look at this from a research perspective. So "},{"startTime":200.0,"endTime":207.6,"body":"the study itself looked at nursing faculty's  "},{"startTime":207.6,"endTime":215.92,"body":"perceptions of climate change and sustainability "},{"startTime":207.6,"endTime":215.92,"body":"and I focused on the nursing faculty in the state  "},{"startTime":215.92,"endTime":223.6,"body":"of South Carolina in order to keep this study more "},{"startTime":215.92,"endTime":223.6,"body":"manageable. I considered it really a pilot study.  "},{"startTime":225.2,"endTime":233.6,"body":"So out of 31 schools of nursing in the state we "},{"startTime":225.2,"endTime":233.6,"body":"sent questionnaires out to all of those schools we  "},{"startTime":233.6,"endTime":243.92,"body":"had 21 schools that responded and approximately "},{"startTime":233.6,"endTime":243.92,"body":"122 responses to our online questionnaire.  "},{"startTime":244.8,"endTime":253.84,"body":"The questionnaire actually used two "},{"startTime":244.8,"endTime":253.84,"body":"tools. One was the New Ecological Paradigm Scale,  "},{"startTime":253.84,"endTime":259.2,"body":"which looks at environmental "},{"startTime":253.84,"endTime":259.2,"body":"attitudes. The second scale was the  "},{"startTime":260.24,"endTime":266.56,"body":"Sustainability Attitudes in Nursing Scale, "},{"startTime":260.24,"endTime":266.56,"body":"and of course that looked at sustainability  "},{"startTime":267.2,"endTime":273.28,"body":"attitudes and practices. And then we asked some "},{"startTime":267.2,"endTime":273.28,"body":"demographics and we asked two important questions:  "},{"startTime":273.84,"endTime":281.04,"body":"did the faculty include content about climate "},{"startTime":273.84,"endTime":281.04,"body":"change and did they include content about  "},{"startTime":281.04,"endTime":293.6,"body":"sustainability? The really big findings from "},{"startTime":281.04,"endTime":293.6,"body":"this were that 81 of faculty who responded did not  "},{"startTime":293.6,"endTime":303.68,"body":"include climate change content and 67 of faculty "},{"startTime":293.6,"endTime":303.68,"body":"did not include anything about sustainability  "},{"startTime":304.24,"endTime":311.92,"body":"so this was I won't say that it was a surprise to "},{"startTime":304.24,"endTime":311.92,"body":"me, right, but it certainly grabbed my attention at  "},{"startTime":311.92,"endTime":321.68,"body":"this point. We also found in the study that "},{"startTime":311.92,"endTime":321.68,"body":"there seemed to be a connection with political  "},{"startTime":321.68,"endTime":332.16,"body":"affiliation so faculty who were more conservative "},{"startTime":321.68,"endTime":332.16,"body":"in their political views tended to score lower  "},{"startTime":332.16,"endTime":338.72,"body":"on these scales, meaning they were not...they did not "},{"startTime":332.16,"endTime":338.72,"body":"have this strong of feelings about or attitudes  "},{"startTime":338.72,"endTime":347.28,"body":"about the environment as opposed to people who "},{"startTime":338.72,"endTime":347.28,"body":"were more liberal they tended to score higher  "},{"startTime":347.28,"endTime":355.12,"body":"on these scales. We also found that they were "},{"startTime":347.28,"endTime":355.12,"body":"probably more likely to include the content in  "},{"startTime":355.12,"endTime":363.92,"body":"their nursing content and so this was interesting "},{"startTime":355.12,"endTime":363.92,"body":"because I found that there were other researchers  "},{"startTime":364.64,"endTime":371.76,"body":"in the last decade or so who have looked at "},{"startTime":364.64,"endTime":371.76,"body":"similar studies who found this connection as well  "},{"startTime":371.76,"endTime":380.0,"body":"so I don't think that this was an isolated "},{"startTime":371.76,"endTime":380.0,"body":"incident related to the political affiliation.  "},{"startTime":380.0,"endTime":384.8,"body":"Thank you. Well, considering political "},{"startTime":380.0,"endTime":384.8,"body":"viewpoints as a barrier to content inclusion  "},{"startTime":385.6,"endTime":388.96,"body":"how would you suggest integrating "},{"startTime":385.6,"endTime":388.96,"body":"this content into nursing curricula? "},{"startTime":390.64,"endTime":401.28,"body":"So the first thing is that the new Essentials by "},{"startTime":390.64,"endTime":401.28,"body":"the AACN has now made that part of their required  "},{"startTime":401.28,"endTime":408.16,"body":"curriculum. I'm glad you brought that "},{"startTime":401.28,"endTime":408.16,"body":"up. Yes. So, that has actually been added  "},{"startTime":408.16,"endTime":417.68,"body":"as an objective so that is competency 3.6b and "},{"startTime":408.16,"endTime":417.68,"body":"it says the student will \"understand the impact of  "},{"startTime":417.68,"endTime":425.84,"body":"climate change on environmental and population "},{"startTime":417.68,"endTime":425.84,"body":"health,\" so I think that that sort of takes away  "},{"startTime":425.84,"endTime":432.16,"body":"that political barrier because now "},{"startTime":425.84,"endTime":432.16,"body":"we know that it's required content  "},{"startTime":433.12,"endTime":440.0,"body":"so people can't really make a choice of will I "},{"startTime":433.12,"endTime":440.0,"body":"include this or not. It's going to be required.  "},{"startTime":440.64,"endTime":447.84,"body":"I suppose I can make a choice of how in-depth they "},{"startTime":440.64,"endTime":447.84,"body":"want to be, right, because that of course the  "},{"startTime":447.84,"endTime":454.96,"body":"objective or the outcome is written fairly broadly "},{"startTime":447.84,"endTime":454.96,"body":"so how specific one would be in introducing that  "},{"startTime":454.96,"endTime":458.32,"body":"information and where in the curriculum that "},{"startTime":454.96,"endTime":458.32,"body":"would be introduced is another interesting"},{"startTime":461.68,"endTime":470.16,"body":"Really it is. So first, nursing faculty "},{"startTime":461.68,"endTime":470.16,"body":"need to become more educated, I believe,  "},{"startTime":470.72,"endTime":478.48,"body":"about what are the health impacts of climate "},{"startTime":470.72,"endTime":478.48,"body":"change. I think we're talking about the issues  "},{"startTime":478.48,"endTime":485.36,"body":"but we're just not making that link to "},{"startTime":478.48,"endTime":485.36,"body":"climate change and so that's the first piece  "},{"startTime":485.36,"endTime":491.12,"body":"is that faculty themselves probably need to "},{"startTime":485.36,"endTime":491.12,"body":"be more educated about it so that they can  "},{"startTime":491.12,"endTime":500.16,"body":"address this with their students. Then as far "},{"startTime":491.12,"endTime":500.16,"body":"as where it belongs in the curriculum, it actually  "},{"startTime":500.16,"endTime":509.36,"body":"needs to be threaded throughout the curriculum. "},{"startTime":500.16,"endTime":509.36,"body":"Every course should include some portion  "},{"startTime":509.92,"endTime":519.76,"body":"of this content. So for example, in pediatrics "},{"startTime":509.92,"endTime":519.76,"body":"or med-surg, we talk about asthma and allergies  "},{"startTime":519.76,"endTime":526.96,"body":"already, but what we need to do is make that "},{"startTime":519.76,"endTime":526.96,"body":"link that as the climate is getting warmer  "},{"startTime":527.52,"endTime":535.92,"body":"we're seeing more allergy responses and so we're "},{"startTime":527.52,"endTime":535.92,"body":"seeing an increased rate in asthma - there's that  "},{"startTime":535.92,"endTime":546.24,"body":"link. So just helping students see the link. As "},{"startTime":535.92,"endTime":546.24,"body":"far as in courses like leadership, helping students  "},{"startTime":546.24,"endTime":554.08,"body":"understand that they can be the leaders to bring "},{"startTime":546.24,"endTime":554.08,"body":"this to our organizations so this can literally  "},{"startTime":554.08,"endTime":561.04,"body":"be weaved throughout the curriculum without "},{"startTime":554.08,"endTime":561.04,"body":"adding a lot of additional content. It's just  "},{"startTime":561.04,"endTime":566.32,"body":"a matter of making the link. That's an important "},{"startTime":561.04,"endTime":566.32,"body":"point because I think one of the resistances  "},{"startTime":566.32,"endTime":571.52,"body":"you're going to get, not you personally, is that "},{"startTime":566.32,"endTime":571.52,"body":"we already have so much curricular content, right,  "},{"startTime":571.52,"endTime":577.12,"body":"that curricular overload and a lot of sacred cows"},{"startTime":571.52,"endTime":577.12,"body":"in our curriculum that are what goes  "},{"startTime":577.12,"endTime":582.32,"body":"for something else to come in that you're making "},{"startTime":577.12,"endTime":582.32,"body":"a great point. It doesn't have to be something  "},{"startTime":582.32,"endTime":586.88,"body":"else has to come in that kind of brings "},{"startTime":582.32,"endTime":586.88,"body":"more kind of luggage to the curriculum.  "},{"startTime":586.88,"endTime":590.88,"body":"It could be something that's already we're kind "},{"startTime":586.88,"endTime":590.88,"body":"of already in our curriculum but maybe like you  "},{"startTime":590.88,"endTime":596.24,"body":"said, not linked or articulated in such a way that "},{"startTime":590.88,"endTime":596.24,"body":"makes those connections to some of these things  "},{"startTime":596.24,"endTime":602.56,"body":"are related to the warming of the climate. So you "},{"startTime":596.24,"endTime":602.56,"body":"touched on this a bit but any more specifics about  "},{"startTime":602.56,"endTime":607.92,"body":"what faculty and schools of nursing can do better "},{"startTime":602.56,"endTime":607.92,"body":"to articulate this link between climate change  "},{"startTime":607.92,"endTime":614.0,"body":"and health related illnesses in the classroom, in a "},{"startTime":607.92,"endTime":614.0,"body":"in any classroom that you're talking about in any  "},{"startTime":614.0,"endTime":618.96,"body":"of these type of courses, what's something "},{"startTime":614.0,"endTime":618.96,"body":"specific that one could do to make that link? "},{"startTime":620.48,"endTime":628.32,"body":"Okay, so as I said I think that this content "},{"startTime":620.48,"endTime":628.32,"body":"needs to be incorporated into every course and  "},{"startTime":628.32,"endTime":632.88,"body":"there are a number of resources that are available."},{"startTime":635.04,"endTime":642.88,"body":"The [Alliance] for Nurses for Healthy "},{"startTime":635.04,"endTime":642.88,"body":"Environments has some terrific resources  "},{"startTime":642.88,"endTime":650.24,"body":"on their website for nursing faculty that "},{"startTime":642.88,"endTime":650.24,"body":"actually help them understand where this content  "},{"startTime":650.24,"endTime":661.28,"body":"can be added throughout the curriculum plan. The "},{"startTime":650.24,"endTime":661.28,"body":"association does have a tool, it is the CHANT"},{"startTime":662.48,"endTime":672.96,"body":"tool. It is c-h-a-n-t and any nurse can go "},{"startTime":662.48,"endTime":672.96,"body":"and complete that tool online and so they  "},{"startTime":672.96,"endTime":683.12,"body":"are continuously gathering data about"},{"startTime":672.96,"endTime":683.12,"body":"people's perceptions and different aspects  "},{"startTime":683.12,"endTime":688.88,"body":"related to climate change. So that is a "},{"startTime":683.12,"endTime":688.88,"body":"resource that people can go and look at.  "},{"startTime":689.68,"endTime":698.48,"body":"So that's one of the places that nursing faculty "},{"startTime":689.68,"endTime":698.48,"body":"can go to find that and so may helping students  "},{"startTime":698.48,"endTime":704.16,"body":"just see that there is a link between the "},{"startTime":698.48,"endTime":704.16,"body":"diseases that they're already learning about  "},{"startTime":704.88,"endTime":712.32,"body":"and how that relates to the change in climate "},{"startTime":704.88,"endTime":712.32,"body":"and then also talking about sustainability  "},{"startTime":713.12,"endTime":722.24,"body":"so also faculty need to help students understand "},{"startTime":713.12,"endTime":722.24,"body":"their role in sustainability practices on a  "},{"startTime":722.24,"endTime":728.88,"body":"personal level. They can help students think "},{"startTime":722.24,"endTime":728.88,"body":"about things such as recycling in their own home,  "},{"startTime":729.84,"endTime":737.84,"body":"energy reduction techniques that they can use at "},{"startTime":729.84,"endTime":737.84,"body":"home or wherever and even things like decreasing  "},{"startTime":737.84,"endTime":742.96,"body":"the consumption of red meat. All of these "},{"startTime":737.84,"endTime":742.96,"body":"things are things that we can do personally  "},{"startTime":743.52,"endTime":751.36,"body":"to reduce carbon footprint but then from an "},{"startTime":743.52,"endTime":751.36,"body":"organizational action there are things that  "},{"startTime":752.4,"endTime":759.2,"body":"students as well as nurses can do. "},{"startTime":752.4,"endTime":759.2,"body":"Many organizations are now forming  "},{"startTime":760.32,"endTime":767.44,"body":"committees that focus on environmental "},{"startTime":760.32,"endTime":767.44,"body":"preferred purchasing so what are the  "},{"startTime":767.44,"endTime":773.44,"body":"products that we're purchasing for use in our "},{"startTime":767.44,"endTime":773.44,"body":"hospitals and clinics that are better for the  "},{"startTime":773.44,"endTime":778.48,"body":"environment. So maybe you think about chemicals "},{"startTime":773.44,"endTime":778.48,"body":"and cleaning products and things like that  "},{"startTime":779.52,"endTime":786.72,"body":"and also looking at the built environment, "},{"startTime":779.52,"endTime":786.72,"body":"modifications such as lighting sources.  "},{"startTime":787.6,"endTime":793.84,"body":"Do we have lighting that will automatically "},{"startTime":787.6,"endTime":793.84,"body":"turn out or go off when people leave the room?  "},{"startTime":794.96,"endTime":802.48,"body":"This is a huge waste of energy when we have lights "},{"startTime":794.96,"endTime":802.48,"body":"that remain on in areas where no one is working.  "},{"startTime":803.84,"endTime":811.84,"body":"We can look at reusable textiles and reusable "},{"startTime":803.84,"endTime":811.84,"body":"equipment. Do we really need everything to be  "},{"startTime":811.84,"endTime":820.8,"body":"disposable? Another thing that organizations "},{"startTime":811.84,"endTime":820.8,"body":"can do is what is called a waste stream audit  "},{"startTime":821.36,"endTime":827.84,"body":"where we look at the waste that is produced, "},{"startTime":821.36,"endTime":827.84,"body":"where is it produced, and then how does it how is  "},{"startTime":827.84,"endTime":838.72,"body":"it disposed of. And then telehealth visits are an "},{"startTime":827.84,"endTime":838.72,"body":"option for people rather than coming in for visits.  "},{"startTime":839.44,"endTime":848.48,"body":"Do more telehealth. And then of course establishing "},{"startTime":839.44,"endTime":848.48,"body":"green teams. That is their sole purpose  "},{"startTime":848.48,"endTime":855.04,"body":"is to look at all of these issues throughout our "},{"startTime":848.48,"endTime":855.04,"body":"organizations and determine how can we do a better  "},{"startTime":855.04,"endTime":863.28,"body":"job of making sure that we are sustainable in "},{"startTime":855.04,"endTime":863.28,"body":"our practices? Those are a lot of great pointers  "},{"startTime":863.28,"endTime":867.2,"body":"and gives me a lot of ideas too, thinking "},{"startTime":863.28,"endTime":867.2,"body":"about integrate those into different courses  "},{"startTime":867.92,"endTime":871.84,"body":"specifically related to the topic that you're "},{"startTime":867.92,"endTime":871.84,"body":"teaching and how you can thread that through the  "},{"startTime":871.84,"endTime":877.12,"body":"curriculum. So from this work, what has been your "},{"startTime":871.84,"endTime":877.12,"body":"response of some of your colleagues that you've  "},{"startTime":877.12,"endTime":882.56,"body":"had this conversation with? Have you met resistance "},{"startTime":877.12,"endTime":882.56,"body":"from colleagues and then also have you gotten some  "},{"startTime":882.56,"endTime":886.24,"body":"support from some colleagues and how to move "},{"startTime":882.56,"endTime":886.24,"body":"this into the curriculum in a purposeful way?  "},{"startTime":887.84,"endTime":897.28,"body":"So I've gotten both yes I have certainly gotten "},{"startTime":887.84,"endTime":897.28,"body":"feedback from some faculty who are resistant  "},{"startTime":897.28,"endTime":903.44,"body":"because they already have a packed curriculum "},{"startTime":897.28,"endTime":903.44,"body":"and the thought of adding something more  "},{"startTime":904.48,"endTime":910.16,"body":"is overwhelming, but I have found that "},{"startTime":904.48,"endTime":910.16,"body":"when I actually start to talk to people  "},{"startTime":910.16,"endTime":916.32,"body":"and help them understand these links that "},{"startTime":910.16,"endTime":916.32,"body":"I talked about earlier they are surprised  "},{"startTime":916.32,"endTime":921.36,"body":"and they're like, oh, I could add that and it "},{"startTime":916.32,"endTime":921.36,"body":"would only take just a couple more minutes  "},{"startTime":921.92,"endTime":933.12,"body":"to add that to my lecture. I remember early "},{"startTime":921.92,"endTime":933.12,"body":"on in the research I had a faculty member tell me  "},{"startTime":933.12,"endTime":940.96,"body":"well it's a great idea I agree with it personally "},{"startTime":933.12,"endTime":940.96,"body":"but I don't think that it will ever be added  "},{"startTime":941.76,"endTime":949.52,"body":"to the curricula until there is some mandate "},{"startTime":941.76,"endTime":949.52,"body":"that requires it. And it was interesting that  "},{"startTime":949.52,"endTime":958.32,"body":"that was about the time that AACN sent out their "},{"startTime":949.52,"endTime":958.32,"body":"draft and as soon as I got the draft I immediately  "},{"startTime":958.32,"endTime":965.52,"body":"went through the draft and looked for competencies "},{"startTime":958.32,"endTime":965.52,"body":"that addressed climate change or sustainability.  "},{"startTime":966.32,"endTime":973.52,"body":"At that point there was not anything "},{"startTime":966.32,"endTime":973.52,"body":"in there. I immediately wrote an email  "},{"startTime":973.52,"endTime":978.32,"body":"to the committee who was working on "},{"startTime":973.52,"endTime":978.32,"body":"that. Now, I can't take claim that it was  "},{"startTime":978.32,"endTime":985.04,"body":"my thought that got that added. I think there were "},{"startTime":978.32,"endTime":985.04,"body":"other people who also emailed the committee, but  "},{"startTime":986.24,"endTime":993.44,"body":"you know, as nurses we stepped up, we met the "},{"startTime":986.24,"endTime":993.44,"body":"challenge, and we said we need to add this."},{"startTime":993.44,"endTime":1002.24,"body":"And they listened! It was added so for "},{"startTime":993.44,"endTime":1002.24,"body":"me that is extremely hopeful that we now have  "},{"startTime":1002.24,"endTime":1011.44,"body":"a competency.
