began  "},{"startTime":260.34,"endTime":269.64,"body":"practice over 40 years ago now perhaps Michelle "},{"startTime":260.34,"endTime":269.64,"body":"you weren't born then um 40 years ago but some  "},{"startTime":269.64,"endTime":276.96,"body":"of us were entering practice 40 years ago and "},{"startTime":269.64,"endTime":276.96,"body":"um and back then you know as we think about  "},{"startTime":278.28,"endTime":287.4,"body":"um that practice environment when we were Learners "},{"startTime":278.28,"endTime":287.4,"body":"in nursing um you know faculty accompanying us to  "},{"startTime":287.4,"endTime":294.12,"body":"clinical um it was a situation where we may "},{"startTime":287.4,"endTime":294.12,"body":"have seen a faculty student ratio of one to  "},{"startTime":294.12,"endTime":302.1,"body":"ten uh students in the clinical environment most "},{"startTime":294.12,"endTime":302.1,"body":"of the time we were assigned post-op patients to  "},{"startTime":302.1,"endTime":309.96,"body":"learn kind of that post-op piece or um perhaps "},{"startTime":302.1,"endTime":309.96,"body":"we were in nursing homes caring for the Aging  "},{"startTime":310.68,"endTime":319.98,"body":"but um back then we maybe were assigned to "},{"startTime":310.68,"endTime":319.98,"body":"patients probably not as much we still stayed with  "},{"startTime":319.98,"endTime":327.24,"body":"that one patient model and uh you know spent eight "},{"startTime":319.98,"endTime":327.24,"body":"hours and we did all of the patient care we were  "},{"startTime":327.24,"endTime":335.52,"body":"taught to be in practice to um to meet the needs "},{"startTime":327.24,"endTime":335.52,"body":"of the patient um all of the needs of the patient  "},{"startTime":336.36,"endTime":344.82,"body":"um in addition to the usual nursing interventions "},{"startTime":336.36,"endTime":344.82,"body":"that you were being taught in the classroom some  "},{"startTime":344.82,"endTime":351.18,"body":"of the assumptions underlying that form of "},{"startTime":344.82,"endTime":351.18,"body":"teaching pedagogically was that it was this  "},{"startTime":351.18,"endTime":359.58,"body":"notion of applying Theory so you learned you "},{"startTime":351.18,"endTime":359.58,"body":"got your theory dump in class and then you would  "},{"startTime":359.58,"endTime":367.14,"body":"go to practice and just by the process of doing "},{"startTime":359.58,"endTime":367.14,"body":"you'd merge the theory and apply it in practice  "},{"startTime":367.14,"endTime":375.72,"body":"that's generally what it was there seemed to be "},{"startTime":367.14,"endTime":375.72,"body":"a preponderance of focus on psychomotor skills  "},{"startTime":375.72,"endTime":381.24,"body":"so you were in clinical to practice psychomotor "},{"startTime":375.72,"endTime":381.24,"body":"skills because it was not likely that you got a  "},{"startTime":381.24,"endTime":387.54,"body":"chance to do that in the real world and that you'd "},{"startTime":381.24,"endTime":387.54,"body":"build on past knowledge it was always building on  "},{"startTime":387.54,"endTime":396.3,"body":"past knowledge moving from simple to complex and "},{"startTime":387.54,"endTime":396.3,"body":"your instructor would be guiding that whole piece  "},{"startTime":397.5,"endTime":403.44,"body":"um and and that's kind of what um what "},{"startTime":397.5,"endTime":403.44,"body":"we're seeing um what we saw 40 years ago  "},{"startTime":405.12,"endTime":409.68,"body":"that's that's really helpful to understand "},{"startTime":405.12,"endTime":409.68,"body":"that perspective and I'd like to take a  "},{"startTime":409.68,"endTime":414.54,"body":"little time to compare that now to what "},{"startTime":409.68,"endTime":414.54,"body":"we're seeing now both in practice and  "},{"startTime":414.54,"endTime":420.6,"body":"nursing education and I think by having this "},{"startTime":414.54,"endTime":420.6,"body":"conversation it might help us to understand  "},{"startTime":421.86,"endTime":427.74,"body":"you know what's brought us to today and what we "},{"startTime":421.86,"endTime":427.74,"body":"need to do as Educators how we might need to shift  "},{"startTime":428.46,"endTime":433.8,"body":"um our thinking and our approach to curriculum "},{"startTime":428.46,"endTime":433.8,"body":"so if you can share now what what's happening  "},{"startTime":433.8,"endTime":438.96,"body":"today well today you know it's interesting the "},{"startTime":433.8,"endTime":438.96,"body":"pedagogical assumptions really haven't changed  "},{"startTime":438.96,"endTime":448.02,"body":"much um you know we still believe that we're using "},{"startTime":438.96,"endTime":448.02,"body":"clinical as our way to apply the theory that we're  "},{"startTime":448.02,"endTime":455.22,"body":"teaching in our didactic so again we go to class "},{"startTime":448.02,"endTime":455.22,"body":"there's this knowledge dump and then we expect  "},{"startTime":455.22,"endTime":465.84,"body":"them to use that information in clinical um again "},{"startTime":455.22,"endTime":465.84,"body":"there is still this emphasis on psychomotor skills  "},{"startTime":466.68,"endTime":472.62,"body":"um and probably more so even now as people use "},{"startTime":466.68,"endTime":472.62,"body":"the word competency because you immediately go  "},{"startTime":472.62,"endTime":479.34,"body":"to psychomotor skills when there really seems "},{"startTime":472.62,"endTime":479.34,"body":"to be this push to develop clinical reasoning  "},{"startTime":479.34,"endTime":486.78,"body":"clinical judgment that that whole piece we're "},{"startTime":479.34,"endTime":486.78,"body":"still using this this assumption that we are  "},{"startTime":486.78,"endTime":492.36,"body":"building on simple to complex using your past "},{"startTime":486.78,"endTime":492.36,"body":"knowledge keep adding to it and then as you go  "},{"startTime":492.36,"endTime":499.62,"body":"to clinical you keep informing um you know your "},{"startTime":492.36,"endTime":499.62,"body":"own learning as a as a student in in nursing  "},{"startTime":500.82,"endTime":507.24,"body":"um in terms of what practice we might see on "},{"startTime":500.82,"endTime":507.24,"body":"the practice side with teaching is we're we're  "},{"startTime":507.24,"endTime":515.76,"body":"probably seeing maybe a one to ten or possibly one "},{"startTime":507.24,"endTime":515.76,"body":"to eight ratio uh trying to account for a little  "},{"startTime":515.76,"endTime":521.88,"body":"bit of complexity in the patient population but "},{"startTime":515.76,"endTime":521.88,"body":"not much if 40 years ago we were still at one to  "},{"startTime":521.88,"endTime":528.9,"body":"ten um you know we're we're taking care of medical "},{"startTime":521.88,"endTime":528.9,"body":"surgical patients we may get assigned more than  "},{"startTime":528.9,"endTime":535.8,"body":"one patient nowadays because that seems to be a "},{"startTime":528.9,"endTime":535.8,"body":"little bit of an emphasis but definitely not the  "},{"startTime":535.8,"endTime":543.06,"body":"status quo and we spend maybe eight to ten hours "},{"startTime":535.8,"endTime":543.06,"body":"on a clinical shift in the instructors in charge  "},{"startTime":543.06,"endTime":551.7,"body":"of of doing everything what's interesting about "},{"startTime":543.06,"endTime":551.7,"body":"this is that you know it hasn't changed we're  "},{"startTime":552.36,"endTime":559.92,"body":"40 years ago we're still using those same "},{"startTime":552.36,"endTime":559.92,"body":"assumptions to guide how we prepare Learners  "},{"startTime":559.92,"endTime":565.32,"body":"in real life in a clinical experience except "},{"startTime":559.92,"endTime":565.32,"body":"for the patient population and the health care  "},{"startTime":565.32,"endTime":572.94,"body":"industry has changed dramatically in the last 40 "},{"startTime":565.32,"endTime":572.94,"body":"years I always make the analogy that when I was  "},{"startTime":572.94,"endTime":581.58,"body":"in post coronary or ICU 40 years ago those "},{"startTime":572.94,"endTime":581.58,"body":"patients exist today on General Med search  "},{"startTime":581.58,"endTime":588.36,"body":"floors we're going to see nurses encounter vent "},{"startTime":581.58,"endTime":588.36,"body":"patients and and very critically ill that were  "},{"startTime":588.36,"endTime":596.58,"body":"once in icus now and they stepped down in in some "},{"startTime":588.36,"endTime":596.58,"body":"of the main mainstreaming of these patients into  "},{"startTime":596.58,"endTime":604.5,"body":"the the general med-surg population and into the "},{"startTime":596.58,"endTime":604.5,"body":"community and and patients that today are in ICU  "},{"startTime":604.5,"endTime":614.16,"body":"they they weren't alive 40 years ago there wasn't "},{"startTime":604.5,"endTime":614.16,"body":"the Science and Technology uh advances so where we  "},{"startTime":614.16,"endTime":619.86,"body":"seem to be at a little bit of a disadvantage with "},{"startTime":614.16,"endTime":619.86,"body":"our our Learners in that we're trying to continue  "},{"startTime":619.86,"endTime":627.72,"body":"to prepare them pedagogically for patients that "},{"startTime":619.86,"endTime":627.72,"body":"existed 40 years ago and so we wonder why we  "},{"startTime":627.72,"endTime":636.06,"body":"have a a difficult time saying our Learners are "},{"startTime":627.72,"endTime":636.06,"body":"prepared for today's you know client population  "},{"startTime":637.68,"endTime":643.2,"body":"yeah I was just thinking you know with you "},{"startTime":637.68,"endTime":643.2,"body":"saying that that everything you just described  "},{"startTime":643.74,"endTime":650.1,"body":"it really impacts and in influences the academic "},{"startTime":643.74,"endTime":650.1,"body":"practice Gap that we're seeing there are many  "},{"startTime":650.1,"endTime":656.16,"body":"other factors I think that have created that "},{"startTime":650.1,"endTime":656.16,"body":"that um space or that uphill climb that that  "},{"startTime":656.16,"endTime":660.48,"body":"our Learners our new graduates have to make "},{"startTime":656.16,"endTime":660.48,"body":"as they transition into practice successfully  "},{"startTime":660.48,"endTime":667.02,"body":"and some don't some really struggle um and "},{"startTime":660.48,"endTime":667.02,"body":"and some need a lot of guidance so I think  "},{"startTime":667.62,"endTime":676.38,"body":"this conversation is timely um to talk about "},{"startTime":667.62,"endTime":676.38,"body":"how we can get out of our own thinking shift our  "},{"startTime":676.38,"endTime":682.8,"body":"thinking get out of our own way to making a shift "},{"startTime":676.38,"endTime":682.8,"body":"where we can really meaningfully try to narrow  "},{"startTime":682.8,"endTime":689.76,"body":"this academic practice Gap with some thoughtful "},{"startTime":682.8,"endTime":689.76,"body":"changes to our curriculum how we design our  "},{"startTime":689.76,"endTime":695.28,"body":"curricula and then how that curricula at a program "},{"startTime":689.76,"endTime":695.28,"body":"level or an institution level than a program level  "},{"startTime":695.28,"endTime":701.82,"body":"and then how it plays out in our classrooms and "},{"startTime":695.28,"endTime":701.82,"body":"how it actually is then consumed from a learning  "},{"startTime":701.82,"endTime":708.06,"body":"perspective by our Learners so I think this is I "},{"startTime":701.82,"endTime":708.06,"body":"find this an exciting conversation and an exciting  "},{"startTime":708.06,"endTime":714.3,"body":"time to be able to do this work absolutely as a "},{"startTime":708.06,"endTime":714.3,"body":"nurse educator yeah maybe a little overwhelming  "},{"startTime":714.3,"endTime":721.14,"body":"maybe a little bit but I think we can take small "},{"startTime":714.3,"endTime":721.14,"body":"chunks and move it forward you know small pieces  "},{"startTime":721.74,"endTime":727.5,"body":"so I'd like to transition a little bit to talk "},{"startTime":721.74,"endTime":727.5,"body":"about some of the consideration that we need to  "},{"startTime":727.5,"endTime":732.72,"body":"incorporate into our thinking our rethinking "},{"startTime":727.5,"endTime":732.72,"body":"reframing our thinking and curriculum design  "},{"startTime":732.72,"endTime":740.52,"body":"what are some um now that we've talked about the "},{"startTime":732.72,"endTime":740.52,"body":"changing dynamics of education and practice what  "},{"startTime":740.52,"endTime":748.68,"body":"are some of the resources or the the guidance that "},{"startTime":740.52,"endTime":748.68,"body":"informs that that Dynamic um change what's telling  "},{"startTime":748.68,"endTime":753.78,"body":"us as Educators that this is the direction we "},{"startTime":748.68,"endTime":753.78,"body":"might need to move if we can discuss some of  "},{"startTime":753.78,"endTime":761.88,"body":"those those pieces yeah well I think two of them "},{"startTime":753.78,"endTime":761.88,"body":"are most prevalent is uh the Horizon report and  "},{"startTime":761.88,"endTime":769.86,"body":"the other factor that is really informing Nursing "},{"startTime":761.88,"endTime":769.86,"body":"education is the new ncsbn clinical judgment model"},{"startTime":772.02,"endTime":777.48,"body":"so let's talk a little bit about the Horizon "},{"startTime":772.02,"endTime":777.48,"body":"Project The Horizon Project was an initiative  "},{"startTime":777.48,"endTime":784.02,"body":"by New Media Consortium where they would chart "},{"startTime":777.48,"endTime":784.02,"body":"a lot of the emerging Technologies for teaching  "},{"startTime":784.02,"endTime":792.36,"body":"and learning and it was launched back in 2002 um "},{"startTime":784.02,"endTime":792.36,"body":"and since that time they would publish a report  "},{"startTime":792.36,"endTime":799.62,"body":"that would detail some of the trends happening "},{"startTime":792.36,"endTime":799.62,"body":"in the workforce around technology that would  "},{"startTime":799.62,"endTime":806.28,"body":"definitely Drive what's happening in education "},{"startTime":799.62,"endTime":806.28,"body":"to prepare individuals to practice in those  "},{"startTime":806.28,"endTime":814.62,"body":"technological environments since then taken over "},{"startTime":806.28,"endTime":814.62,"body":"by educause which is a non-profit Association of  "},{"startTime":814.62,"endTime":823.38,"body":"the largest community I I would say of Technology "},{"startTime":814.62,"endTime":823.38,"body":"academic industry campus leaders that are looking  "},{"startTime":823.38,"endTime":832.62,"body":"to advance higher education and how they use I.T "},{"startTime":823.38,"endTime":832.62,"body":"in in the learning so in these reports they they  "},{"startTime":832.62,"endTime":840.9,"body":"talk about these emerging Trends and probably "},{"startTime":832.62,"endTime":840.9,"body":"the most influential as you think about Trends  "},{"startTime":840.9,"endTime":848.46,"body":"in education are some of the more contemporary "},{"startTime":840.9,"endTime":848.46,"body":"things so the use of artificial intelligence  "},{"startTime":848.46,"endTime":856.02,"body":"or AI that informs learning analytics how do "},{"startTime":848.46,"endTime":856.02,"body":"we know our Learners are learning we've become  "},{"startTime":856.02,"endTime":860.16,"body":"much more sophisticated over the course "},{"startTime":856.02,"endTime":860.16,"body":"of the years to identify how Learners are  "},{"startTime":860.16,"endTime":868.86,"body":"learning we've had to adapt our learning spaces "},{"startTime":860.16,"endTime":868.86,"body":"to account for both online and face-to-face so  "},{"startTime":868.86,"endTime":878.4,"body":"lot of hybrid learning we've had to create tools "},{"startTime":868.86,"endTime":878.4,"body":"that Embrace AI especially in our entertainment  "},{"startTime":878.4,"endTime":886.74,"body":"areas Learners are using AI every day in their "},{"startTime":878.4,"endTime":886.74,"body":"gaming on their phones and how do we Embrace that  "},{"startTime":886.74,"endTime":894.24,"body":"and bring that into our learning environments and "},{"startTime":886.74,"endTime":894.24,"body":"so those are some of the the factors and so really  "},{"startTime":894.24,"endTime":902.28,"body":"what it gets down to is what we call reframing "},{"startTime":894.24,"endTime":902.28,"body":"the practice of teaching you know it's no longer  "},{"startTime":902.28,"endTime":909.18,"body":"us as Educators transmitting knowledge which is "},{"startTime":902.28,"endTime":909.18,"body":"really kind of how we've always seen our role  "},{"startTime":909.18,"endTime":916.38,"body":"focus is the transmission of knowledge but more "},{"startTime":909.18,"endTime":916.38,"body":"how do we facilitate knowledge with our Learners  "},{"startTime":916.38,"endTime":922.86,"body":"and that requires us to rethink this practice "},{"startTime":916.38,"endTime":922.86,"body":"of teaching the information coming out and the  "},{"startTime":922.86,"endTime":927.9,"body":"technology is really going to be driving that "},{"startTime":922.86,"endTime":927.9,"body":"and that is a report that helps us understand  "},{"startTime":927.9,"endTime":934.92,"body":"where our consumers are our our Learners "},{"startTime":927.9,"endTime":934.92,"body":"are and so that would be one driving force  "},{"startTime":936.0,"endTime":945.06,"body":"that's great soon I love this idea of moving us "},{"startTime":936.0,"endTime":945.06,"body":"as nurse Educators as a community of practice  "},{"startTime":945.78,"endTime":952.26,"body":"um from transmitter of knowledge to facilitator of "},{"startTime":945.78,"endTime":952.26,"body":"knowledge um that it's not just the information's  "},{"startTime":952.26,"endTime":958.02,"body":"coming from my head and going to your head um "},{"startTime":952.26,"endTime":958.02,"body":"it's really about how we can help facilitate  "},{"startTime":958.02,"endTime":965.22,"body":"this experience of learning from practicing "},{"startTime":958.02,"endTime":965.22,"body":"different skills using knowledge and applying  "},{"startTime":965.22,"endTime":969.72,"body":"it to different contexts that we can do "},{"startTime":965.22,"endTime":969.72,"body":"that with and for our Learners um yeah"},{"startTime":969.72,"endTime":979.02,"body":"more being more intentional about our roles as "},{"startTime":969.72,"endTime":979.02,"body":"Educators and the Art and Science of teaching  "},{"startTime":979.02,"endTime":987.48,"body":"becomes a front front stage that's great and you "},{"startTime":979.02,"endTime":987.48,"body":"know I think um the second thing that you
