Throughout his nursing career, Dr.  "},{"startTime":115.56,"endTime":123.0,"body":"Christman was a tireless advocate for the hiring "},{"startTime":115.56,"endTime":123.0,"body":"and training of male and minority nurses, as well  "},{"startTime":123.0,"endTime":131.28,"body":"as a pioneer in the advancement and elevation "},{"startTime":123.0,"endTime":131.28,"body":"of nursing education. He was the first dean of  "},{"startTime":131.28,"endTime":138.54,"body":"the Rush University College of Nursing, where he "},{"startTime":131.28,"endTime":138.54,"body":"developed a new educational model that promoted a  "},{"startTime":138.54,"endTime":145.68,"body":"unified pedagogical approach to nursing education, "},{"startTime":138.54,"endTime":145.68,"body":"combining academia with clinical practice.  "},{"startTime":147.12,"endTime":154.2,"body":"This groundbreaking work not only established "},{"startTime":147.12,"endTime":154.2,"body":"Dr Christman as a nursing leader, but it set a  "},{"startTime":154.2,"endTime":159.42,"body":"new standard for nursing education both "},{"startTime":154.2,"endTime":159.42,"body":"within the United States and abroad.  "},{"startTime":161.34,"endTime":168.0,"body":"Dr. Christman may best be known for helping to "},{"startTime":161.34,"endTime":168.0,"body":"establish the National Male Nurse Association,  "},{"startTime":168.0,"endTime":175.02,"body":"which ultimately became the American "},{"startTime":168.0,"endTime":175.02,"body":"Assembly for Men in Nursing in 1981.  "},{"startTime":175.86,"endTime":186.24,"body":"Dr. Christman was born on February 16, 1915 in Summit "},{"startTime":175.86,"endTime":186.24,"body":"Hill, Pennsylvania. The oldest of five children, he  "},{"startTime":186.24,"endTime":193.38,"body":"grew up in a small town. Once he began attending "},{"startTime":186.24,"endTime":193.38,"body":"school, he developed into a voracious reader  "},{"startTime":193.38,"endTime":200.58,"body":"with a passion for learning. In fact, Luther's town "},{"startTime":193.38,"endTime":200.58,"body":"librarian once commented that he checked out more  "},{"startTime":200.58,"endTime":209.1,"body":"books than anyone else she knew. After graduating "},{"startTime":200.58,"endTime":209.1,"body":"high school, Dr. Christman had few prospects given  "},{"startTime":209.1,"endTime":214.74,"body":"the economic landscape of the Great Depression "},{"startTime":209.1,"endTime":214.74,"body":"and his own family's financial situation.  "},{"startTime":215.4,"endTime":223.02,"body":"Unable to find steady employment, a local minister "},{"startTime":215.4,"endTime":223.02,"body":"suggested that he pursue nursing as a profession  "},{"startTime":223.02,"endTime":229.44,"body":"since, at the time, students not only worked for "},{"startTime":223.02,"endTime":229.44,"body":"their training but were given a small stipend.  "},{"startTime":230.04,"endTime":236.94,"body":"This made nursing education a feasible option "},{"startTime":230.04,"endTime":236.94,"body":"not only for himself but also for his high school  "},{"startTime":236.94,"endTime":244.32,"body":"sweetheart, Dorothy Black, whom he intended to marry. "},{"startTime":236.94,"endTime":244.32,"body":"So Luther and Dorothy soon moved to Philadelphia,  "},{"startTime":244.32,"endTime":252.18,"body":"Pennsylvania where they each enrolled in a nursing "},{"startTime":244.32,"endTime":252.18,"body":"diploma program. He at the Pennsylvania Hospital  "},{"startTime":252.18,"endTime":258.54,"body":"School of Nursing for Men while she studied "},{"startTime":252.18,"endTime":258.54,"body":"at the Methodist Hospital School of Nursing.  "},{"startTime":259.74,"endTime":266.58,"body":"Dr. Christman graduated from nursing school "},{"startTime":259.74,"endTime":266.58,"body":"in 1939 and married Dorothy the same year.  "},{"startTime":266.58,"endTime":273.42,"body":"As a new graduate nurse in a profession "},{"startTime":266.58,"endTime":273.42,"body":"mostly comprised of women, Dr. Christman soon  "},{"startTime":273.42,"endTime":279.0,"body":"discovered what it meant to be part of the "},{"startTime":273.42,"endTime":279.0,"body":"minority. Having been denied admission into a  "},{"startTime":279.0,"endTime":285.12,"body":"local university's nursing program as well "},{"startTime":279.0,"endTime":285.12,"body":"as entry into the Army Nurse Corps, Luther  "},{"startTime":285.12,"endTime":292.92,"body":"enlisted in the Merchant Marine where he became "},{"startTime":285.12,"endTime":292.92,"body":"a pharmacist mate, first class during World War II.  "},{"startTime":293.76,"endTime":300.3,"body":"During his time as a Merchant Marine, Dr. Christman "},{"startTime":293.76,"endTime":300.3,"body":"wrote numerous letters to U.S government officials  "},{"startTime":300.3,"endTime":308.58,"body":"pleading for them to allow men to serve in the "},{"startTime":300.3,"endTime":308.58,"body":"military as nurses. In one such letter he wrote:  "},{"startTime":347.16,"endTime":354.24,"body":"Yet despite Dr. Christman's best efforts, men "},{"startTime":347.16,"endTime":354.24,"body":"continued to be denied the opportunity to  "},{"startTime":354.24,"endTime":360.84,"body":"serve in the Army Nurse Corps throughout World "},{"startTime":354.24,"endTime":360.84,"body":"War II. In fact, this policy was not changed until  "},{"startTime":360.84,"endTime":367.98,"body":"the 1960s when the military finally allowed "},{"startTime":360.84,"endTime":367.98,"body":"men to be commissioned as nursing officers.  "},{"startTime":369.84,"endTime":376.02,"body":"Following the war, Dr. Christman left the Merchant "},{"startTime":369.84,"endTime":376.02,"body":"Marine, enrolled in a university nursing program,  "},{"startTime":376.02,"endTime":384.3,"body":"and ultimately earned his baccalaureate degree "},{"startTime":376.02,"endTime":384.3,"body":"from Temple University in 1948. He then went  "},{"startTime":384.3,"endTime":392.7,"body":"on to secure a teaching position at the School of "},{"startTime":384.3,"endTime":392.7,"body":"Nursing Camden Hospital in Camden New Jersey.
