Yeah I'd love to thanks. "},{"startTime":202.68,"endTime":208.74,"body":"So initially just the ACE series in general really  "},{"startTime":209.76,"endTime":214.44,"body":"just to give you a little background is for "},{"startTime":209.76,"endTime":214.44,"body":"helping to improve really the quality of care  "},{"startTime":214.44,"endTime":219.0,"body":"for any vulnerable or under underserved "},{"startTime":214.44,"endTime":219.0,"body":"population and so if you're not familiar  "},{"startTime":219.0,"endTime":224.7,"body":"with the ACE series in general it's really a "},{"startTime":219.0,"endTime":224.7,"body":"great resource and you should look at it but  "},{"startTime":224.7,"endTime":237.06,"body":"in terms of the LGBTQ+ series or the ACE+ series "},{"startTime":224.7,"endTime":237.06,"body":"this was really a mandate or a thought from our  "},{"startTime":237.06,"endTime":246.6,"body":"constituents so the NLN surveyed their members and "},{"startTime":237.06,"endTime":246.6,"body":"this is what came at the top of interesting topics  "},{"startTime":246.6,"endTime":251.4,"body":"for us to actually do with the next ACE series "},{"startTime":246.6,"endTime":251.4,"body":"on. And so I think it's really important that  "},{"startTime":251.4,"endTime":257.22,"body":"we we recognize that this is really a needed "},{"startTime":251.4,"endTime":257.22,"body":"resource for us to have for our constituents  "},{"startTime":257.88,"endTime":262.68,"body":"um this series was actually funded by the Hearst "},{"startTime":257.88,"endTime":262.68,"body":"Foundations. And so the Hearst Foundations has  "},{"startTime":262.68,"endTime":267.78,"body":"been a big supporter of the ACE series and "},{"startTime":262.68,"endTime":267.78,"body":"they helped fund this and it's important  "},{"startTime":267.78,"endTime":273.3,"body":"that we recognize that because they recognize the "},{"startTime":267.78,"endTime":273.3,"body":"importance of us helping to meet the needs of the  "},{"startTime":273.3,"endTime":281.94,"body":"LGBTQ+ individual. The purpose of this project is "},{"startTime":273.3,"endTime":281.94,"body":"really to equip nurse educators with the necessary  "},{"startTime":281.94,"endTime":289.98,"body":"tools to help teach about the LGBTQ+ people and "},{"startTime":281.94,"endTime":289.98,"body":"really help us graduate a nurse is prepared and  "},{"startTime":289.98,"endTime":294.72,"body":"knowledgeable and culturally competent to meet "},{"startTime":289.98,"endTime":294.72,"body":"the needs of these individuals and that in  "},{"startTime":294.72,"endTime":299.4,"body":"turn will help decrease the disparities that they "},{"startTime":294.72,"endTime":299.4,"body":"experience. And I think John can talk a little bit  "},{"startTime":299.4,"endTime":304.2,"body":"more about that later but that's something that "},{"startTime":299.4,"endTime":304.2,"body":"we really recognize as we were developing these  "},{"startTime":304.98,"endTime":313.02,"body":"wonderful thank you and you know I want to talk "},{"startTime":304.98,"endTime":313.02,"body":"a little bit more about the role that this series  "},{"startTime":313.02,"endTime":319.5,"body":"specifically the ACE+ series has in our nursing "},{"startTime":313.02,"endTime":319.5,"body":"programs and in our classrooms, in our learning  "},{"startTime":319.5,"endTime":327.0,"body":"environment. And so you know I think there's been "},{"startTime":319.5,"endTime":327.0,"body":"an emphasis an increased emphasis on diversity,  "},{"startTime":327.0,"endTime":333.48,"body":"equity, and inclusion (DEI) and thankfully in "},{"startTime":327.0,"endTime":333.48,"body":"our nursing programs in our curricula there's  "},{"startTime":333.48,"endTime":345.12,"body":"been a very firm...really call to action to "},{"startTime":333.48,"endTime":345.12,"body":"increase our DEI content in our programs our  "},{"startTime":345.12,"endTime":351.96,"body":"content delivery in our curricula and also to "},{"startTime":345.12,"endTime":351.96,"body":"really honor I think the DEI values in the way  "},{"startTime":351.96,"endTime":357.06,"body":"we respond to one another the way we engage "},{"startTime":351.96,"endTime":357.06,"body":"with our learners, the way we engage with  "},{"startTime":357.9,"endTime":364.92,"body":"everyone really in our organization. And so you "},{"startTime":357.9,"endTime":364.92,"body":"know I imagine that while most nurse educators  "},{"startTime":364.92,"endTime":373.56,"body":"understand the importance of the role of DEI, "},{"startTime":364.92,"endTime":373.56,"body":"specifically LGBTQ+ in our nursing programs  "},{"startTime":373.56,"endTime":380.52,"body":"just by the nature of us being nurses and taking "},{"startTime":373.56,"endTime":380.52,"body":"care of our communities I'm not sure that many  "},{"startTime":380.52,"endTime":390.6,"body":"feel comfortable with teaching these very specific "},{"startTime":380.52,"endTime":390.6,"body":"specialty areas like LGBTQ+. And I don't know that  "},{"startTime":390.6,"endTime":396.66,"body":"there's comfort in exploring it with our learners "},{"startTime":390.6,"endTime":396.66,"body":"and so you know I think managing that discomfort,  "},{"startTime":397.26,"endTime":404.7,"body":"I'll speak for myself, requires some real "},{"startTime":397.26,"endTime":404.7,"body":"skill development and some Advanced teaching  "},{"startTime":404.7,"endTime":411.78,"body":"skills so I was wondering if you can share your "},{"startTime":404.7,"endTime":411.78,"body":"perspectives on the role the ACE+ series plays  "},{"startTime":411.78,"endTime":418.38,"body":"in our nursing education and what it might mean "},{"startTime":411.78,"endTime":418.38,"body":"for us as nurse educators. Sure I think that's  "},{"startTime":418.38,"endTime":426.12,"body":"a great question because if the series itself "},{"startTime":418.38,"endTime":426.12,"body":"can reach anyone any educator who is a novice  "},{"startTime":426.12,"endTime":431.28,"body":"in this content area and can beneficial to anybody "},{"startTime":426.12,"endTime":431.28,"body":"who's also considered to be an expert in this area  "},{"startTime":432.36,"endTime":437.04,"body":"so I think that's a great question and really "},{"startTime":432.36,"endTime":437.04,"body":"helps expand on what Beth has already said about  "},{"startTime":437.04,"endTime":443.46,"body":"the ACE+ series and the ACE series in general "},{"startTime":437.04,"endTime":443.46,"body":"the overarching goal of this project really is  "},{"startTime":443.46,"endTime":449.58,"body":"to equip and prepare educators with the tools "},{"startTime":443.46,"endTime":449.58,"body":"that they need to be as successful as possible  "},{"startTime":449.58,"endTime":459.0,"body":"to teach care of LBGTQ+people and help us prepare "},{"startTime":449.58,"endTime":459.0,"body":"the future of nursing our future graduates and the  "},{"startTime":459.0,"endTime":465.18,"body":"new nursing workforce that's been hopefully going "},{"startTime":459.0,"endTime":465.18,"body":"to be prepared both knowledgeably and culturally  "},{"startTime":465.18,"endTime":471.06,"body":"competent enough to really meet the needs of this "},{"startTime":465.18,"endTime":471.06,"body":"population. We know this population faces some  "},{"startTime":471.06,"endTime":477.06,"body":"significant health disparities so the more that "},{"startTime":471.06,"endTime":477.06,"body":"we can do to prepare the future nursing Workforce  "},{"startTime":477.06,"endTime":482.28,"body":"the better we will be equipped to minimize "},{"startTime":477.06,"endTime":482.28,"body":"some of the health therapies that they face.  "},{"startTime":483.84,"endTime":491.22,"body":"The NLN ACE+ series really has some really really "},{"startTime":483.84,"endTime":491.22,"body":"well-developed case scenarios that touch on a lot  "},{"startTime":491.22,"endTime":498.12,"body":"of major components of health of LGBTQ+ people "},{"startTime":491.22,"endTime":498.12,"body":"therapeutic communication and also providing  "},{"startTime":498.12,"endTime":506.58,"body":"affirming care and while we use three scenarios to "},{"startTime":498.12,"endTime":506.58,"body":"kind of cover these content areas it's still not  "},{"startTime":506.58,"endTime":513.0,"body":"enough to cover all the needs of LGBTQ+ people but "},{"startTime":506.58,"endTime":513.0,"body":"it really gives a good foundational understanding  "},{"startTime":513.0,"endTime":519.42,"body":"to the basics of providing equitable health, "},{"startTime":513.0,"endTime":519.42,"body":"having therapeutic communication, and having  "},{"startTime":519.42,"endTime":525.12,"body":"affirming care for patients who really need "},{"startTime":519.42,"endTime":525.12,"body":"it. There's some really well-developed teaching  "},{"startTime":525.12,"endTime":530.34,"body":"strategies that are provided that are incredibly "},{"startTime":525.12,"endTime":530.34,"body":"helpful and there's loads of additional resources  "},{"startTime":530.34,"endTime":537.18,"body":"that can be utilized to support faculty who "},{"startTime":530.34,"endTime":537.18,"body":"are using these theories the resources are from  "},{"startTime":537.18,"endTime":544.92,"body":"well-known, reputable affirming LGBTQ+ centers "},{"startTime":537.18,"endTime":544.92,"body":"and non-profits throughout the United States.  "},{"startTime":545.76,"endTime":551.1,"body":"And they have some really good resources that we "},{"startTime":545.76,"endTime":551.1,"body":"also use to help develop some of these scenarios  "},{"startTime":552.0,"endTime":557.22,"body":"but one of the things that you actually just "},{"startTime":552.0,"endTime":557.22,"body":"said that kind of struck a chord with me is that  "},{"startTime":557.22,"endTime":563.16,"body":"you mentioned discomfort. And I think there's "},{"startTime":557.22,"endTime":563.16,"body":"always going to be topics that we come across  "},{"startTime":563.16,"endTime":570.66,"body":"in life in nursing and education that are going "},{"startTime":563.16,"endTime":570.66,"body":"to be uncomfortable for us to talk about I don't  "},{"startTime":570.66,"endTime":574.56,"body":"think that means that we need to avoid them, I "},{"startTime":570.66,"endTime":574.56,"body":"think that's just going to perpetuate some of the  "},{"startTime":576.18,"endTime":582.12,"body":"disparities that are already facing these "},{"startTime":576.18,"endTime":582.12,"body":"communities. So if there's one goal that I  "},{"startTime":582.12,"endTime":587.52,"body":"would have from this whole series it's that I want "},{"startTime":582.12,"endTime":587.52,"body":"faculty to become more comfortable talking about  "},{"startTime":587.52,"endTime":591.9,"body":"these things that are uncomfortable because if we "},{"startTime":587.52,"endTime":591.9,"body":"continue this avoidance pattern then we're only  "},{"startTime":591.9,"endTime":597.3,"body":"going to perpetuate the disparities that these "},{"startTime":591.9,"endTime":597.3,"body":"folks are already facing. So I'm really hopeful  "},{"startTime":597.3,"endTime":602.88,"body":"that this series that our team put together "},{"startTime":597.3,"endTime":602.88,"body":"can really start to create some of these really  "},{"startTime":602.88,"endTime":607.92,"body":"important conversations about the health needs "},{"startTime":602.88,"endTime":607.92,"body":"of this population and really provide some of  "},{"startTime":607.92,"endTime":614.16,"body":"those resources for faculty and students to start "},{"startTime":607.92,"endTime":614.16,"body":"preparing and providing affirming care to these  "},{"startTime":614.16,"endTime":621.78,"body":"individuals. You know, John...oh go ahead Beth. "},{"startTime":614.16,"endTime":621.78,"body":"Well I was just gonna say that as part of this  "},{"startTime":621.78,"endTime":630.42,"body":"team my expertise was minimal at best in this "},{"startTime":621.78,"endTime":630.42,"body":"area and John and a couple of other people had  "},{"startTime":630.42,"endTime":636.18,"body":"a lot of expertise in this area and I would say "},{"startTime":630.42,"endTime":636.18,"body":"generationally I'm older than most of the people  "},{"startTime":636.18,"endTime":642.84,"body":"that were well another person was too, but we "},{"startTime":636.18,"endTime":642.84,"body":"were we really didn't understand the language the  "},{"startTime":642.84,"endTime":650.52,"body":"vocabulary the appropriate words to be affirming "},{"startTime":642.84,"endTime":650.52,"body":"and I learned so much. And one thing I said we  "},{"startTime":650.52,"endTime":655.44,"body":"just presented on this at the NLN (Education "},{"startTime":650.52,"endTime":655.44,"body":"Summit) and one thing that I learned while I  "},{"startTime":655.44,"endTime":660.72,"body":"was doing this and I mentioned this at the NLN "},{"startTime":655.44,"endTime":660.72,"body":"was you know no matter what your background is or  "},{"startTime":660.72,"endTime":667.02,"body":"what you believe, what your political background, "},{"startTime":660.72,"endTime":667.02,"body":"your faith background, these are people and it's  "},{"startTime":667.02,"endTime":675.06,"body":"so important for us to care for people as nurses "},{"startTime":667.02,"endTime":675.06,"body":"no matter what we believe and what we should what  "},{"startTime":675.06,"endTime":682.5,"body":"we what I learned in this situation and going "},{"startTime":675.06,"endTime":682.5,"body":"through this is the compassion based on the  "},{"startTime":682.5,"endTime":690.66,"body":"things I heard that these people didn't get. The "},{"startTime":682.5,"endTime":690.66,"body":"experiences that John and another expert really  "},{"startTime":690.66,"endTime":697.14,"body":"told us some of the things that they go through "},{"startTime":690.66,"endTime":697.14,"body":"and those disparities are not they're not, I mean,  "},{"startTime":697.14,"endTime":702.48,"body":"they are health disparities in terms of getting "},{"startTime":697.14,"endTime":702.48,"body":"care, and but it's it's it's not just disparities,  "},{"startTime":702.48,"endTime":708.96,"body":"it's mistreatment in some cases too and I learned "},{"startTime":702.48,"endTime":708.96,"body":"so much about that and the compassion that  "},{"startTime":709.5,"endTime":715.44,"body":"you have as a nurse for people in general "},{"startTime":709.5,"endTime":715.44,"body":"was really to me just really brought forward.  "},{"startTime":717.0,"endTime":723.96,"body":"So John I was actually wondering because I "},{"startTime":717.0,"endTime":723.96,"body":"keep hearing mention of the disparities that  "},{"startTime":723.96,"endTime":730.62,"body":"this community faces. Could you expand on those "},{"startTime":723.96,"endTime":730.62,"body":"disparities to shed some light on them, like Beth  "},{"startTime":730.62,"endTime":736.14,"body":"had just mentioned like mistreatment being one of "},{"startTime":730.62,"endTime":736.14,"body":"them, but can you expand and maybe even give a few  "},{"startTime":736.14,"endTime":741.42,"body":"examples or describe what this might feel like "},{"startTime":736.14,"endTime":741.42,"body":"experientially from a person of this community?  "},{"startTime":741.42,"endTime":746.82,"body":"Sure I think Beth actually hits the nail on the "},{"startTime":741.42,"endTime":746.82,"body":"head with the the mistreatment because that really  "},{"startTime":746.82,"endTime":752.94,"body":"perpetuates everything else right so if someone's "},{"startTime":746.82,"endTime":752.94,"body":"mistreated because someone doesn't know how to  "},{"startTime":752.94,"endTime":758.22,"body":"care for them properly whether it's intentional or "},{"startTime":752.94,"endTime":758.22,"body":"unintentional or they have a bias against someone  "},{"startTime":758.22,"endTime":763.92,"body":"in this community that's going to prevent them "},{"startTime":758.22,"endTime":763.92,"body":"from seeking care into the future right if you're  "},{"startTime":763.92,"endTime":768.84,"body":"not going to go to a place where you're being you "},{"startTime":763.92,"endTime":768.84,"body":"know treated poorly or not treated appropriately.  "},{"startTime":769.86,"endTime":773.04,"body":"So it really just perpetuates the "},{"startTime":769.86,"endTime":773.04,"body":"disparities that they're already facing  "},{"startTime":773.64,"endTime":777.84,"body":"because providers don't have the necessary "},{"startTime":773.64,"endTime":777.84,"body":"knowledge to provide some really foundational  "},{"startTime":777.84,"endTime":784.32,"body":"basic care for this population. So a lot of "},{"startTime":777.84,"endTime":784.32,"body":"it is avoidance of care fear of seeking care  "},{"startTime":785.28,"endTime":791.82,"body":"and then all those preventative things that should "},{"startTime":785.28,"endTime":791.82,"body":"be screened for these people it goes overlooked so  "},{"startTime":791.82,"endTime":796.62,"body":"when they eventually need care, it's beyond "},{"startTime":791.82,"endTime":796.62,"body":"the point where we're looking at prevention,  "},{"startTime":796.62,"endTime":801.3,"body":"secondary treatment, and we're at the tertiary "},{"startTime":796.62,"endTime":801.3,"body":"care now because they have been avoiding health  "},{"startTime":801.3,"endTime":807.0,"body":"care for so long because of just the way they were "},{"startTime":801.3,"endTime":807.0,"body":"treated. And that's a very broad statement that  "},{"startTime":807.0,"endTime":811.8,"body":"doesn't apply to everybody, but that's really a "},{"startTime":807.0,"endTime":811.8,"body":"good general gist of you know some of the major  "},{"startTime":811.8,"endTime":819.24,"body":"things that kind of put this population at risk. "},{"startTime":811.8,"endTime":819.24,"body":"And I think two of our cases really demonstrate  "},{"startTime":819.24,"endTime":826.56,"body":"that in the way we develop them and so the there's "},{"startTime":819.24,"endTime":826.56,"body":"three different cases and two the two adult cases  "},{"startTime":826.56,"endTime":831.18,"body":"both of them had delayed care because of "},{"startTime":826.56,"endTime":831.18,"body":"the way they had been treated in the past.  "},{"startTime":832.68,"endTime":837.96,"body":"You know, this conversation also links me to I've "},{"startTime":832.68,"endTime":837.96,"body":"heard the word affirming a few times. Can you  "},{"startTime":837.96,"endTime":846.18,"body":"expand on the the role affirming has and what it "},{"startTime":837.96,"endTime":846.18,"body":"means and how we can do that as a nurse educators?"},{"startTime":848.52,"endTime":853.92,"body":"I think most important to think "},{"startTime":848.52,"endTime":853.92,"body":"about when it comes to affirming care  "},{"startTime":855.12,"endTime":860.4,"body":"is it really it's just care that's designed "},{"startTime":855.12,"endTime":860.4,"body":"to support and affirm one's identity,  "},{"startTime":860.4,"endTime":867.42,"body":"right. How do we do that? I do think but you have I think it's  "},{"startTime":1328.34,"endTime":1332.6,"body":"just as much a learning care for the faculty as it "},{"startTime":1328.34,"endTime":1332.6,"body":"is for the students really to be honest with you,  "},{"startTime":1334.52,"endTime":1341.12,"body":"yeah I think the briefing is really a key "},{"startTime":1334.52,"endTime":1341.12,"body":"component to having a better understanding of this  "},{"startTime":1341.12,"endTime":1346.16,"body":"population because I don't want to say it forces "},{"startTime":1341.12,"endTime":1346.16,"body":"the conversation, but it provides the opportunity  "},{"startTime":1346.16,"endTime":1350.78,"body":"to have these conversations which often are "},{"startTime":1346.16,"endTime":1350.78,"body":"avoided so I think it's a really good learning  "},{"startTime":1350.78,"endTime":1355.04,"body":"opportunity for both students and faculty to "},{"startTime":1350.78,"endTime":1355.04,"body":"really have these conversations together and talk  "},{"startTime":1355.04,"endTime":1361.46,"body":"about why these are important conversations to "},{"startTime":1355.04,"endTime":1361.46,"body":"be having about this population. Yeah and I would  "},{"startTime":1361.46,"endTime":1368.06,"body":"even you know I agree with you John to take that a "},{"startTime":1361.46,"endTime":1368.06,"body":"step further that really we should should I try to  "},{"startTime":1368.06,"endTime":1374.06,"body":"avoid that worth it's it's a it's a dirty word in "},{"startTime":1368.06,"endTime":1374.06,"body":"my mind because when we put things like should it  "},{"startTime":1374.06,"endTime":1381.02,"body":"kind of puts expectations but we I think we can "},{"startTime":1374.06,"endTime":1381.02,"body":"consider having dialogue as a teaching strategy  "},{"startTime":1381.68,"endTime":1387.62,"body":"in the classroom in our offices. It's not just in "},{"startTime":1381.68,"endTime":1387.62,"body":"debriefing and simulation we can use debriefing  "},{"startTime":1387.62,"endTime":1393.98,"body":"strategies all you know in every opportunity with "},{"startTime":1387.62,"endTime":1393.98,"body":"our learner so I would even take it a step further  "},{"startTime":1393.98,"endTime":1399.92,"body":"to say it doesn't certainly doesn't have to be a "},{"startTime":1393.98,"endTime":1399.92,"body":"simulation but it does create this space to have a  "},{"startTime":1399.92,"endTime":1408.02,"body":"dialogue, which is I think very helpful.
