It was by far the most influential  "},{"startTime":169.32,"endTime":174.24,"body":"simulation learning experience I have experienced "},{"startTime":169.32,"endTime":174.24,"body":"that brought me right to the edge of my comfort  "},{"startTime":174.24,"endTime":182.04,"body":"zone as a teacher, a nurse, and honestly as a parent. "},{"startTime":174.24,"endTime":182.04,"body":"It was at this edge that I was able to experience  "},{"startTime":182.64,"endTime":187.56,"body":"what Rachel and I always talk about, this "},{"startTime":182.64,"endTime":187.56,"body":"desirable difficulty, this willingness to lean  "},{"startTime":187.56,"endTime":193.86,"body":"into discomfort in the service of learning. It was born out of a need to  "},{"startTime":269.52,"endTime":276.96,"body":"find a way for nurses and pediatric emergency "},{"startTime":269.52,"endTime":276.96,"body":"medicine fellows, new physicians to work together.  "},{"startTime":277.86,"endTime":284.58,"body":"We saw how nurses and "},{"startTime":277.86,"endTime":284.58,"body":"pediatric emergency medicine fellows were trained  "},{"startTime":284.58,"endTime":290.7,"body":"and expected to really quickly "},{"startTime":284.58,"endTime":290.7,"body":"assess critically ill and injured kids  "},{"startTime":291.78,"endTime":297.3,"body":"and at the same time you have to provide "},{"startTime":291.78,"endTime":297.3,"body":"like these emergency medicine resuscitation  "},{"startTime":297.3,"endTime":304.68,"body":"measures. I was a new "},{"startTime":297.3,"endTime":304.68,"body":"attending at the time and we  "},{"startTime":304.68,"endTime":308.04,"body":"looked all around us and we said, you know, "},{"startTime":304.68,"endTime":308.04,"body":"this is a really fast-paced environment  "},{"startTime":308.76,"endTime":314.88,"body":"and we expect that you know these fellows "},{"startTime":308.76,"endTime":314.88,"body":"who I was only just a few years removed from.  "},{"startTime":316.2,"endTime":322.08,"body":"I had to really quickly step into their "},{"startTime":316.2,"endTime":322.08,"body":"new roles and have like competencies in  "},{"startTime":322.08,"endTime":328.98,"body":"critical behaviors and skills and somehow provide "},{"startTime":322.08,"endTime":328.98,"body":"very safe and effective high quality care.  "},{"startTime":330.3,"endTime":337.8,"body":"At the time I was working at NYU "},{"startTime":330.3,"endTime":337.8,"body":"in Bellevue Hospital and we had a whole slew  "},{"startTime":337.8,"endTime":345.9,"body":"of new team members, not only fellows but "},{"startTime":337.8,"endTime":345.9,"body":"nurses and and so what it got us thinking.  "},{"startTime":345.9,"endTime":353.04,"body":"The first I guess first inspiration came from "},{"startTime":345.9,"endTime":353.04,"body":"when we thought about ourselves as,  "},{"startTime":353.04,"endTime":358.8,"body":"I should say that we were all new attendings. We were like a crop of sort of young recruits  "},{"startTime":359.46,"endTime":369.24,"body":"and we remembered that when we were "},{"startTime":359.46,"endTime":369.24,"body":"residents that the truth was the  "},{"startTime":369.24,"endTime":377.4,"body":"opportunities to experience and practice many "},{"startTime":369.24,"endTime":377.4,"body":"of these sort of very high acuity, low frequency  "},{"startTime":377.4,"endTime":383.4,"body":"events were limited and of "},{"startTime":377.4,"endTime":383.4,"body":"course that's the reason we have a medical  "},{"startTime":383.4,"endTime":390.42,"body":"simulation, right? Health care simulation is born out "},{"startTime":383.4,"endTime":390.42,"body":"of that need but we also remembered that  "},{"startTime":390.42,"endTime":397.8,"body":"truth be told, even combining together our real "},{"startTime":390.42,"endTime":397.8,"body":"clinical experiences with those from our simulated  "},{"startTime":397.8,"endTime":404.64,"body":"education training it was still it was still "},{"startTime":397.8,"endTime":404.64,"body":"very sparse. The American College of  "},{"startTime":404.64,"endTime":410.58,"body":"Graduate Medical Education for fellows requires "},{"startTime":404.64,"endTime":410.58,"body":"only four months of acute and emergency care  "},{"startTime":410.58,"endTime":415.38,"body":"training in all three years of residency. "},{"startTime":410.58,"endTime":415.38,"body":"That's not a lot. I mean, it's entirely  "},{"startTime":415.38,"endTime":422.28,"body":"likely that you graduate like I did from "},{"startTime":415.38,"endTime":422.28,"body":"residency without ever caring for someone who's in  "},{"startTime":422.28,"endTime":427.32,"body":"cardio pulmonary arrest or like put a chest tube "},{"startTime":422.28,"endTime":427.32,"body":"in or and this is the thing that really struck  "},{"startTime":427.32,"endTime":435.12,"body":"us. I never led a team when I was a resident and so "},{"startTime":427.32,"endTime":435.12,"body":"suddenly I became a fellow and I had remembered  "},{"startTime":436.14,"endTime":443.1,"body":"people expected me to somehow lead this team and "},{"startTime":436.14,"endTime":443.1,"body":"I didn't have the training or the experiences  "},{"startTime":444.36,"endTime":449.58,"body":"and so again as colleagues, "},{"startTime":444.36,"endTime":449.58,"body":"we looked around us and there was a  "},{"startTime":449.58,"endTime":455.94,"body":"whole team of new nurses fellows and we got "},{"startTime":449.58,"endTime":455.94,"body":"to thinking what could we do to sort of like  "},{"startTime":455.94,"endTime":461.22,"body":"bridge the gap between our the expectations "},{"startTime":455.94,"endTime":461.22,"body":"of us and like what we were capable of doing.  "},{"startTime":462.18,"endTime":468.24,"body":"And that's when we thought of creating "},{"startTime":462.18,"endTime":468.24,"body":"BASE Camp. Now there was an inspiration for  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":468.24,"endTime":474.24,"body":"there's a pediatric critical care "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":468.24,"endTime":474.24,"body":"boot camp that is in CHOP Children's  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":474.24,"endTime":480.6,"body":"Hospital of Philadelphia and at that time they "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":474.24,"endTime":480.6,"body":"had been around for a few years and that boot  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":480.6,"endTime":485.34,"body":"camp was focused on pediatric critical care "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":480.6,"endTime":485.34,"body":"fellow training. It was a two-day  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":485.34,"endTime":492.66,"body":"intensive course based on what fellows needed to "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":485.34,"endTime":492.66,"body":"to become proficient critical care intensivists.  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":493.5,"endTime":502.14,"body":"We saw that as being inspirational, "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":493.5,"endTime":502.14,"body":"but we also wanted to challenge ourselves to sort  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":502.14,"endTime":510.9,"body":"of think about how fellows as physicians "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":502.14,"endTime":510.9,"body":"really are dependent...codependent on how as  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":510.9,"endTime":517.2,"body":"an interprofessional team we all work together. "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":510.9,"endTime":517.2,"body":"Like all resuscitations are it's like a team-based  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":517.2,"endTime":522.96,"body":"sport, right? I don't need to preach "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":517.2,"endTime":522.96,"body":"to the choir, but that's that's where we got the  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":522.96,"endTime":529.56,"body":"idea that we would create this interprofessional, "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":522.96,"endTime":529.56,"body":"high impact, learner-centered program that was  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":529.56,"endTime":534.18,"body":"at the time really focused on interprofessional "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":529.56,"endTime":534.18,"body":"teamwork, advanced life support resuscitation,  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":534.18,"endTime":543.9,"body":"advanced airway resuscitation, trauma resuscitation, "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":534.18,"endTime":543.9,"body":"and very importantly the cherry on top was that  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":543.9,"endTime":550.74,"body":"we thought about mass casualty incident disasters. "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":543.9,"endTime":550.74,"body":"I remember that mass casualties and disasters  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":550.74,"endTime":560.04,"body":"was an addition to BASE Camp, the cherry on top "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":550.74,"endTime":560.04,"body":"if you will because we had a quintessential  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":560.04,"endTime":564.54,"body":"school bus that rolls into the ER. The"},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":560.04,"endTime":564.54,"body":"quintessential, what do you do when a school bus  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":564.54,"endTime":569.34,"body":"rolls into the ER with like whatever number "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":564.54,"endTime":569.34,"body":"of kids. And I do remember that day because  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":570.18,"endTime":575.22,"body":"we were given a notification we were told "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":570.18,"endTime":575.22,"body":"that there was going to be this like bus full of  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":575.22,"endTime":580.44,"body":"kids that I don't even remember what the issue "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":575.22,"endTime":580.44,"body":"was I think it was probably some accident and  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":580.44,"endTime":586.44,"body":"we started getting prepared and it was "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":580.44,"endTime":586.44,"body":"painfully apparent that we were all on different  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":586.44,"endTime":593.94,"body":"pages about what was necessary in order to "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":586.44,"endTime":593.94,"body":"sort of work together and so again that was  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":593.94,"endTime":601.08,"body":"another different inspiration for the addition "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":593.94,"endTime":601.08,"body":"of mass casualty incident disaster training  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":601.8,"endTime":606.72,"body":"to BASE Camp and it has a very special place "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":601.8,"endTime":606.72,"body":"in the instructional design of the program."},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":608.94,"endTime":613.62,"body":"That's great Kevin. I'm wondering if you "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":608.94,"endTime":613.62,"body":"can actually describe the instructional  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":613.62,"endTime":619.26,"body":"design of the program, briefly talking, walking through the different  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":619.26,"endTime":622.5,"body":"highlights, the different "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":619.26,"endTime":622.5,"body":"events that occur throughout the weekend  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":623.46,"endTime":628.32,"body":"to give our listeners a little bit of an "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":623.46,"endTime":628.32,"body":"understanding of what it might be like. Sure.  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":629.04,"endTime":635.4,"body":"So in many ways there are three phases "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":629.04,"endTime":635.4,"body":"to the instructional design of BASE Camp.  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":636.42,"endTime":642.48,"body":"It starts with a pre-conference cognitive "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":636.42,"endTime":642.48,"body":"load so in this stepwise sequential model  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":642.48,"endTime":650.04,"body":"of learning it begins with sort of this idea "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":642.48,"endTime":650.04,"body":"that even before you know any of the nurses or  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":650.04,"endTime":656.22,"body":"fellows and now Child Life Specialists come to "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":650.04,"endTime":656.22,"body":"BASE Camp there's an expectation that they come  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":656.22,"endTime":662.22,"body":"prepared. We want everyone to have a shared "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":656.22,"endTime":662.22,"body":"mental model before they arrive because it sort of  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":662.22,"endTime":671.04,"body":"elevates the sort of practice of everyone around "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":662.22,"endTime":671.04,"body":"them. When we started, the idea was that we  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":671.04,"endTime":677.94,"body":"were trying to foster more purposeful learning. We want a deeper engagement at BASE Camp and  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":677.94,"endTime":683.58,"body":"so these pre-conference sort of educational "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":677.94,"endTime":683.58,"body":"modules, which to be honest, after  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":683.58,"endTime":688.32,"body":"Covid it now seems like you know asynchronous "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":683.58,"endTime":688.32,"body":"learning is sort of way to go.  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":689.4,"endTime":693.06,"body":"For us, it was trying to get people to "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":689.4,"endTime":693.06,"body":"develop declarative knowledge and  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":693.9,"endTime":701.04,"body":"we customized all these modules which "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":693.9,"endTime":701.04,"body":"included something that was dear to me which is  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":701.04,"endTime":705.24,"body":"I have a very short attention span "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":701.04,"endTime":705.24,"body":"and so they're all  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":706.2,"endTime":711.42,"body":"high quality graphics with very "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":706.2,"endTime":711.42,"body":"little text. It's just basically very high  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":711.42,"endTime":716.76,"body":"yield information many of them have multiple "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":711.42,"endTime":716.76,"body":"choice self-assessment questions and they're  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":716.76,"endTime":722.64,"body":"tailored to stimulate self-directed learning and "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":716.76,"endTime":722.64,"body":"and self-appraisal. If you have an  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":722.64,"endTime":727.02,"body":"advanced opportunity to sort of learn these things, "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":722.64,"endTime":727.02,"body":"appraise what you do know or what you need to know  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":727.02,"endTime":731.88,"body":"more, then by the time you get to BASE Camp you "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":727.02,"endTime":731.88,"body":"can explore those topics in greater detail in  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":731.88,"endTime":739.02,"body":"a way that sort of makes sense to each learner "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":731.88,"endTime":739.02,"body":"and then there's a side effect of that  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":739.02,"endTime":745.62,"body":"and something that both Kathryn and I hold dear "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":739.02,"endTime":745.62,"body":"and that is it eliminates lectures. Neither of  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":745.62,"endTime":754.68,"body":"us like podium-style lecture learning "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":745.62,"endTime":754.68,"body":"and so yeah what it does is it gives  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":754.68,"endTime":760.44,"body":"more time for hands-on experiential like practice "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":754.68,"endTime":760.44,"body":"and learning, more time for simulation at BASE Camp.  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":761.76,"endTime":765.6,"body":"So in that stepwise sequential "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":761.76,"endTime":765.6,"body":"model we're learning that begins sort of before  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":765.6,"endTime":770.28,"body":"BASE Camp like when people arrive,"},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":765.6,"endTime":770.28,"body":"when the nurses Child Life Specialists and  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":770.28,"endTime":775.08,"body":"fellows arrive and they're suddenly thrust into "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":770.28,"endTime":775.08,"body":"working together on these interprofessional  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":775.08,"endTime":781.62,"body":"teams they hit the ground running and we have multiple opportunities in what's  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":781.62,"endTime":787.08,"body":"essentially an integrative and like experimental "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":781.62,"endTime":787.08,"body":"phase where people get to practice those  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":787.08,"endTime":793.5,"body":"skills. So "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":889.86,"endTime":896.52,"body":"as Kathryn and I have developed  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":896.52,"endTime":901.98,"body":"the program iteratively over the years. It's been "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":896.52,"endTime":901.98,"body":"important for us to sort of provide opportunities  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":901.98,"endTime":907.86,"body":"for reinforcement and that's why it's a very long "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":901.98,"endTime":907.86,"body":"two days. We're not shy about telling all  "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":907.86,"endTime":912.48,"body":"the participants before they come that you "},{"speaker":"BASE Camp","startTime":907.86,"endTime":912.48,"body":"know, be ready.
