So this was part of a "},{"startTime":124.86,"endTime":131.88,"body":"collaborative dissertation for the three of us  "},{"startTime":131.88,"endTime":140.04,"body":"at Teachers College at Columbia University and we "},{"startTime":131.88,"endTime":140.04,"body":"spent years talking about academic integrity and  "},{"startTime":140.04,"endTime":145.86,"body":"the bits and pieces of it that we kept coming "},{"startTime":140.04,"endTime":145.86,"body":"back to were do students know what an offense  "},{"startTime":145.86,"endTime":151.86,"body":"is or how severe they think it might be? Do their "},{"startTime":145.86,"endTime":151.86,"body":"faculty support policies that are in place and if  "},{"startTime":151.86,"endTime":156.06,"body":"they see something are they going to say anything? "},{"startTime":151.86,"endTime":156.06,"body":"So looking at those elements that's how  "},{"startTime":156.06,"endTime":161.88,"body":"we kind of came to the the conclusion to write "},{"startTime":156.06,"endTime":161.88,"body":"about this and to research this and look at the  "},{"startTime":161.88,"endTime":168.72,"body":"willingness to report because we know as nurses "},{"startTime":161.88,"endTime":168.72,"body":"that it's important that when you see something  "},{"startTime":168.72,"endTime":175.44,"body":"wrong or unethical that you speak up because "},{"startTime":168.72,"endTime":175.44,"body":"our patient's safety is at stake and modeling  "},{"startTime":175.44,"endTime":180.36,"body":"that behavior in the classroom is pivotal so that "},{"startTime":175.44,"endTime":180.36,"body":"they start to understand that culture of integrity.  "},{"startTime":181.44,"endTime":186.48,"body":"Wonderful. What can faculty and schools of "},{"startTime":181.44,"endTime":186.48,"body":"nursing do today to better facilitate an  "},{"startTime":186.48,"endTime":190.98,"body":"open mechanism for reporting, responding to "},{"startTime":186.48,"endTime":190.98,"body":"academic integrity violations reported by  "},{"startTime":190.98,"endTime":195.9,"body":"peers while still maintaining that environment "},{"startTime":190.98,"endTime":195.9,"body":"that supports unique and complex relationships  "},{"startTime":195.9,"endTime":202.38,"body":"of a cohort? Will avoid that cohort disruption? I "},{"startTime":195.9,"endTime":202.38,"body":"mean, I think it's really important that we model  "},{"startTime":202.38,"endTime":207.54,"body":"as faculty what we want to see in our students "},{"startTime":202.38,"endTime":207.54,"body":"and that can start from how we interact with  "},{"startTime":207.54,"endTime":211.56,"body":"each other with faculty, how we're sharing our "},{"startTime":207.54,"endTime":211.56,"body":"message. So I think it's really important that  "},{"startTime":211.56,"endTime":216.66,"body":"we start there and just really with modeling what "},{"startTime":211.56,"endTime":216.66,"body":"we want to see in our students because if we're  "},{"startTime":216.66,"endTime":221.16,"body":"not being good role models then they're going to "},{"startTime":216.66,"endTime":221.16,"body":"think, oh, well if they're not doing it it's okay  "},{"startTime":221.16,"endTime":229.44,"body":"if I don't do it. Also providing consistency so "},{"startTime":221.16,"endTime":229.44,"body":"the faculty act in a consistent force and have  "},{"startTime":229.44,"endTime":234.54,"body":"similar standards that are upheld throughout "},{"startTime":229.44,"endTime":234.54,"body":"all classes and even in the clinical setting.  "},{"startTime":235.5,"endTime":241.32,"body":"You brought up a good point there, sorry "},{"startTime":235.5,"endTime":241.32,"body":"to interrupt, about consistency, right we're  "},{"startTime":241.32,"endTime":246.18,"body":"all very familiar with situations when there's "},{"startTime":241.32,"endTime":246.18,"body":"inconsistency in using or applying  "},{"startTime":246.18,"endTime":251.46,"body":"our policies within the institution and that "},{"startTime":246.18,"endTime":251.46,"body":"causes some conflicts with students and faculty.  "},{"startTime":252.12,"endTime":255.48,"body":"Having that consistent message would be "},{"startTime":252.12,"endTime":255.48,"body":"very, very important and role modeling that too.  "},{"startTime":256.26,"endTime":263.52,"body":"Yeah. I also think focusing on prevention is really "},{"startTime":256.26,"endTime":263.52,"body":"important as well. In our our research  "},{"startTime":263.52,"endTime":268.44,"body":"we're looking at a program improvement solutions "},{"startTime":263.52,"endTime":268.44,"body":"and things that would encourage peer reporting  "},{"startTime":268.44,"endTime":273.96,"body":"or that would make students feel empowered "},{"startTime":268.44,"endTime":273.96,"body":"to speak up when they see something and  "},{"startTime":273.96,"endTime":278.88,"body":"so I think that focusing on prevention - how do "},{"startTime":273.96,"endTime":278.88,"body":"we make it so that the temptation to  "},{"startTime":278.88,"endTime":284.52,"body":"cheat on an exam or plagiarize a paper is gone "},{"startTime":278.88,"endTime":284.52,"body":"in the first place? So even something as  "},{"startTime":284.52,"endTime":290.1,"body":"simple as randomizing your seat assignment during "},{"startTime":284.52,"endTime":290.1,"body":"exams you know can make a difference and can say  "},{"startTime":290.1,"endTime":296.7,"body":"this is something that we know is an issue. "},{"startTime":290.1,"endTime":296.7,"body":"I think for so long faculty hide from the fact  "},{"startTime":296.7,"endTime":301.86,"body":"that academic integrity violations are "},{"startTime":296.7,"endTime":301.86,"body":"happening and we can't they are happening.   "},{"startTime":301.86,"endTime":307.02,"body":"I think that if you're proactive and saying "},{"startTime":301.86,"endTime":307.02,"body":"okay, this is how I set up our classroom  "},{"startTime":307.02,"endTime":313.8,"body":"to be a safe space, in a safe space that you know "},{"startTime":307.02,"endTime":313.8,"body":"that your classmates are doing the right thing.  "},{"startTime":315.54,"endTime":320.52,"body":"We're definitely recognizing it, right,"},{"startTime":315.54,"endTime":320.52,"body":"and acknowledging that it happens. We like to  "},{"startTime":320.52,"endTime":324.66,"body":"think that nursing students don't cheat but they "},{"startTime":320.52,"endTime":324.66,"body":"cheat just like every other student cheats, right?  "},{"startTime":325.56,"endTime":331.5,"body":"Acknowledging that it happens, putting what "},{"startTime":325.56,"endTime":331.5,"body":"you said in place, de-incentivizing cheating.  "},{"startTime":331.5,"endTime":338.4,"body":"But that still doesn't get to the place of that "},{"startTime":331.5,"endTime":338.4,"body":"ethical comportment, that okay, they're  "},{"startTime":338.4,"endTime":342.72,"body":"putting barriers in place so I don't cheat and "},{"startTime":338.4,"endTime":342.72,"body":"making it harder, but what is the impetus to  "},{"startTime":342.72,"endTime":347.46,"body":"be cheating anyway? When we talk about"},{"startTime":342.72,"endTime":347.46,"body":"nursing with that strong moral ethical code we  "},{"startTime":347.46,"endTime":356.34,"body":"have our ANA Code of Ethics. How do we instill "},{"startTime":347.46,"endTime":356.34,"body":"in people that, is it more about how we have  "},{"startTime":356.34,"endTime":361.2,"body":"mandatory reporting and reporting that we can do "},{"startTime":356.34,"endTime":361.2,"body":"in the hospital setting that is supposed to be  "},{"startTime":361.8,"endTime":367.74,"body":"non-punitive and more systems based. Tell me  "},{"startTime":361.8,"endTime":367.74,"body":"little bit about what some of your strategies  "},{"startTime":367.74,"endTime":372.9,"body":"would be that have that are more to do with "},{"startTime":367.74,"endTime":372.9,"body":"teaching the students in that ethical  "},{"startTime":374.28,"endTime":380.28,"body":"comportment piece, aside from the other things we "},{"startTime":374.28,"endTime":380.28,"body":"could do as instructors to mitigate some of these  "},{"startTime":380.28,"endTime":387.42,"body":"things from happening in the classroom. I think "},{"startTime":380.28,"endTime":387.42,"body":"it's important to address how the cheating that  "},{"startTime":387.42,"endTime":392.7,"body":"may be occurring in the classroom is impacting "},{"startTime":387.42,"endTime":392.7,"body":"the potential clinical outcomes for our clients.  "},{"startTime":392.7,"endTime":397.68,"body":"Because if we have a student that's not being "},{"startTime":392.7,"endTime":397.68,"body":"honest when they're taking an exam or working  "},{"startTime":397.68,"endTime":402.54,"body":"on a paper or whatever that assignment is, are "},{"startTime":397.68,"endTime":402.54,"body":"they really learning what's happening and is  "},{"startTime":402.54,"endTime":407.1,"body":"that going to allow them to provide the optimal "},{"startTime":402.54,"endTime":407.1,"body":"care or is it going to tell them that, hey, I  "},{"startTime":407.1,"endTime":413.52,"body":"got by doing it here, maybe I cannot chart those "},{"startTime":407.1,"endTime":413.52,"body":"vitals. I'll just take the last set and to really  "},{"startTime":413.52,"endTime":417.3,"body":"working with them to show them there are negative "},{"startTime":413.52,"endTime":417.3,"body":"patient or client outcomes that are going to come  "},{"startTime":417.3,"endTime":423.48,"body":"from that is a place that we should really start. "},{"startTime":417.3,"endTime":423.48,"body":"Yeah really linking that,"},{"startTime":423.48,"endTime":428.7,"body":"it happens in the classroom but that safety, that "},{"startTime":423.48,"endTime":428.7,"body":"professionalism aspect in the clinical setting.  "},{"startTime":428.7,"endTime":435.3,"body":"I think through scenarios and that type of thing "},{"startTime":428.7,"endTime":435.3,"body":"it's really what will be impactful. Yeah, I always  "},{"startTime":435.3,"endTime":440.64,"body":"tell us my students I'm not here to teach "},{"startTime":435.3,"endTime":440.64,"body":"you to to pass an exam. That's a bonus,  "},{"startTime":440.64,"endTime":445.86,"body":"I'm glad if you're doing well of course, but what "},{"startTime":440.64,"endTime":445.86,"body":"our purpose is is to prepare you for taking care  "},{"startTime":445.86,"endTime":451.8,"body":"of complex patient needs and it's so much more "},{"startTime":445.86,"endTime":451.8,"body":"than a grade. I think appealing to their  "},{"startTime":452.7,"endTime":457.62,"body":"moral compass in that regard, you know...I kind of tie it back. I'm like, would you  "},{"startTime":457.62,"endTime":461.88,"body":"want a nurse who cheated their way through nursing "},{"startTime":457.62,"endTime":461.88,"body":"school taking care of you or your mom or your  "},{"startTime":461.88,"endTime":467.46,"body":"child? Kind of thinking about it from that way, kind "},{"startTime":461.88,"endTime":467.46,"body":"of appealing to their their ethical standards that  "},{"startTime":467.46,"endTime":471.54,"body":"that we know that is in there. They "},{"startTime":467.46,"endTime":471.54,"body":"wanted to be nursing students. It's the most  "},{"startTime":471.54,"endTime":478.44,"body":"ethical profession. We just have to show them why "},{"startTime":471.54,"endTime":478.44,"body":"it really does matter. Right. Very good points that  "},{"startTime":478.44,"endTime":483.9,"body":"you all made there. What are some of your thoughts "},{"startTime":478.44,"endTime":483.9,"body":"now I don't know how much you know about Chat GPT,  "},{"startTime":483.9,"endTime":488.52,"body":"but it's been the talk of the last"},{"startTime":483.9,"endTime":488.52,"body":"several weeks now and people are are using it  "},{"startTime":488.52,"endTime":495.18,"body":"and I'm sure our students are already at least "},{"startTime":488.52,"endTime":495.18,"body":"exploring it if not tempted to use it. What are  "},{"startTime":495.18,"endTime":498.84,"body":"your thoughts about it's influence on academic "},{"startTime":495.18,"endTime":498.84,"body":"integrity and what we're talking about here? "},{"startTime":500.04,"endTime":505.86,"body":"I think it's going to make it a challenge because "},{"startTime":500.04,"endTime":505.86,"body":"there are plagiarism detection software out there  "},{"startTime":505.86,"endTime":512.16,"body":"that we've all utilized before, but they're not "},{"startTime":505.86,"endTime":512.16,"body":"recognizing what this artificial intelligence is  "},{"startTime":512.16,"endTime":519.54,"body":"actually generating at this point in time. It's "},{"startTime":512.16,"endTime":519.54,"body":"going make faculty be a little more  "},{"startTime":520.44,"endTime":526.8,"body":"hyper vigilant about what students are submitting "},{"startTime":520.44,"endTime":526.8,"body":"and reading, what they're writing, is this even  "},{"startTime":526.8,"endTime":532.44,"body":"consistent with what the student is, how the "},{"startTime":526.8,"endTime":532.44,"body":"student is performing in class or how they  "},{"startTime":532.44,"endTime":537.96,"body":"even have a conversation because those are the "},{"startTime":532.44,"endTime":537.96,"body":"kind of things that even trigger me to look at  "},{"startTime":537.96,"endTime":546.06,"body":"maybe go wait this may be something that it's not. "},{"startTime":537.96,"endTime":546.06,"body":"I actually was in a forum looking at different  "},{"startTime":546.06,"endTime":550.98,"body":"things the other day and I can't exactly remember "},{"startTime":546.06,"endTime":550.98,"body":"which forum it was but one of the faculty said they  "},{"startTime":550.98,"endTime":556.44,"body":"actually had their students do an assignment with "},{"startTime":550.98,"endTime":556.44,"body":"it so they could see how that would come across  "},{"startTime":556.44,"endTime":562.08,"body":"so that they had a baseline to compare something "},{"startTime":556.44,"endTime":562.08,"body":"to if they needed to in the future. That's really  "},{"startTime":562.08,"endTime":567.6,"body":"smart. They were going to do it. That's a great "},{"startTime":562.08,"endTime":567.6,"body":"strategy, like a writing sample in the classroom  "},{"startTime":567.6,"endTime":571.8,"body":"before you have writing assignments so you can. "},{"startTime":567.6,"endTime":571.8,"body":"That's a lot of work on an instructor's part.  "},{"startTime":571.8,"endTime":576.48,"body":"For sure, yeah. It certainly could work for a small "},{"startTime":571.8,"endTime":576.48,"body":"class, but when you start talking about 80 to 150  "},{"startTime":576.48,"endTime":580.32,"body":"students in one of your classes, boy, unless you "},{"startTime":576.48,"endTime":580.32,"body":"have a lot of TA support that are trained, that's  "},{"startTime":580.32,"endTime":587.22,"body":"going to be difficult. Yeah it's kind of scary, "},{"startTime":580.32,"endTime":587.22,"body":"but if as we look forward to the new  "},{"startTime":587.22,"endTime":593.58,"body":"Essentials that are coming out through AACN that's "},{"startTime":587.22,"endTime":593.58,"body":"an opportunity also with this competency-based  "},{"startTime":593.58,"endTime":599.88,"body":"assessment method to really think about strategies "},{"startTime":593.58,"endTime":599.88,"body":"that we can do to assess our students in  "},{"startTime":599.88,"endTime":605.1,"body":"their competency level that will kind of maybe "},{"startTime":599.88,"endTime":605.1,"body":"mitigate some of this. Absolutely. That's what I  "},{"startTime":605.1,"endTime":609.24,"body":"was going to say. I think we have to really be strategic about the types of assignments  "},{"startTime":609.24,"endTime":614.04,"body":"that these students are completing because technology is always changing. There's always  "},{"startTime":614.04,"endTime":618.24,"body":"going to be the next best thing that students have "},{"startTime":614.04,"endTime":618.24,"body":"access to or it's all about  "},{"startTime":618.24,"endTime":623.64,"body":"figuring innovative ways to assess what they know, "},{"startTime":618.24,"endTime":623.64,"body":"assess to make sure that they're safe, competent  "},{"startTime":623.64,"endTime":630.12,"body":"providers and maybe move away from some "},{"startTime":623.64,"endTime":630.12,"body":"of these more traditional types of assignments.  "},{"startTime":631.62,"endTime":636.06,"body":"So for each of you, what's the last takeaway "},{"startTime":631.62,"endTime":636.06,"body":"message you want to leave for our podcast audience?"},{"startTime":642.36,"endTime":646.8,"body":"Don't be discouraged. I think sometimes "},{"startTime":642.36,"endTime":646.8,"body":"when you read some of this research and you"},{"startTime":646.8,"endTime":652.08,"body":"think, gosh, like is everybody cheating and"},{"startTime":646.8,"endTime":652.08,"body":"no, it's not everybody by any stretch of  "},{"startTime":652.08,"endTime":656.82,"body":"the imagination, but I think you just have to "},{"startTime":652.08,"endTime":656.82,"body":"acknowledge that it is happening. You know you  "},{"startTime":656.82,"endTime":661.56,"body":"can't think, oh my students would never. You have to "},{"startTime":656.82,"endTime":661.56,"body":"acknowledge it and you have to meet  "},{"startTime":661.56,"endTime":668.52,"body":"at head on and really work to try "},{"startTime":661.56,"endTime":668.52,"body":"to make it as a conducive environment to academic  "},{"startTime":668.52,"endTime":674.64,"body":"integrity as you really can. I "},{"startTime":668.52,"endTime":674.64,"body":"also think being aware of the changes because you  "},{"startTime":674.64,"endTime":681.6,"body":"know we kind of when we wrote this Chat GPT wasn't "},{"startTime":674.64,"endTime":681.6,"body":"around and it popped up in the last couple months  "},{"startTime":681.6,"endTime":687.12,"body":"so we need to recognize that technology is driving "},{"startTime":681.6,"endTime":687.12,"body":"some of this and to be aware of those changes and  "},{"startTime":687.12,"endTime":692.94,"body":"just kind of stay in the know. I'm "},{"startTime":687.12,"endTime":692.94,"body":"going to kind of build off of that with we always  "},{"startTime":692.94,"endTime":698.16,"body":"have to change our practices to keep up with "},{"startTime":692.94,"endTime":698.16,"body":"those things and so we have to be very open to  "},{"startTime":698.16,"endTime":703.2,"body":"doing those things as well and recognizing that "},{"startTime":698.16,"endTime":703.2,"body":"just because we did something this way last year  "},{"startTime":703.2,"endTime":709.14,"body":"or two years ago it may not be the way that we're "},{"startTime":703.2,"endTime":709.14,"body":"going to do it next semester or next year.   "},{"startTime":709.14,"endTime":714.12,"body":"Well I want to thank the three of you so much for "},{"startTime":709.14,"endTime":714.12,"body":"joining us for this conversation.
