There's "},{"startTime":147.66,"endTime":152.4,"body":"a lot of interesting language that's used in  "},{"startTime":152.4,"endTime":159.12,"body":"academia and again you know five and a half "},{"startTime":152.4,"endTime":159.12,"body":"years in to academia myself I'm still learning  "},{"startTime":159.12,"endTime":168.06,"body":"it and it's quite different from what  "},{"startTime":159.12,"endTime":168.06,"body":"language is used in other settings and so when  "},{"startTime":168.06,"endTime":174.54,"body":"I started talk about novice to expert you know "},{"startTime":168.06,"endTime":174.54,"body":"I had been an expert at what I was doing before  "},{"startTime":174.54,"endTime":182.34,"body":"and suddenly I was a novice and so as we hired "},{"startTime":174.54,"endTime":182.34,"body":"new faculty and in some cases higher faculty  "},{"startTime":182.34,"endTime":189.72,"body":"who are coming from practice rather than from "},{"startTime":182.34,"endTime":189.72,"body":"another academic setting um I there's work that  "},{"startTime":189.72,"endTime":197.82,"body":"needs to be done to help those individuals make "},{"startTime":189.72,"endTime":197.82,"body":"that transition effectively and learn what's  "},{"startTime":197.82,"endTime":203.94,"body":"valued and you know all of those pieces really "},{"startTime":206.04,"endTime":213.78,"body":"helped listening to you Kate when I was a coming  "},{"startTime":213.78,"endTime":220.98,"body":"into education as a novice teacher it would have "},{"startTime":213.78,"endTime":220.98,"body":"been really helpful if somebody had said to me  "},{"startTime":220.98,"endTime":230.4,"body":"your job is to teach these two courses really "},{"startTime":220.98,"endTime":230.4,"body":"really well like over the next year two to  "},{"startTime":230.4,"endTime":236.7,"body":"three semesters we want you just to dig in master's um "},{"startTime":273.36,"endTime":280.32,"body":"program in leadership and educational courses I  "},{"startTime":280.32,"endTime":287.1,"body":"still wasn't taught some of this real nuts and "},{"startTime":280.32,"endTime":287.1,"body":"bolts skills of teaching I had to learn that  "},{"startTime":287.1,"endTime":290.922,"body":"on the on the ground just like we do with our "},{"startTime":287.1,"endTime":290.922,"body":"nurses you know."},{"startTime":290.922,"endTime":301.56,"body":"[KJ] I think the interesting thing you just said is \"I want you to teach this "},{"startTime":290.922,"endTime":301.56,"body":"class really, really well.\" You know we get assigned  "},{"startTime":301.56,"endTime":307.56,"body":"classes you know here's your teaching assignments "},{"startTime":301.56,"endTime":307.56,"body":"there's very little conversation about how well  "},{"startTime":307.56,"endTime":313.5,"body":"you should teach the class until the end when "},{"startTime":307.56,"endTime":313.5,"body":"you get your evaluations and then it's like oh  "},{"startTime":315.48,"endTime":321.9,"body":"um maybe you didn't teach it well enough so "},{"startTime":315.48,"endTime":321.9,"body":"it would be great if that messaging was on  "},{"startTime":321.9,"endTime":329.94,"body":"the front end for for faculty whose primary role "},{"startTime":321.9,"endTime":329.94,"body":"is teaching we want you to teach not only do the  "},{"startTime":329.94,"endTime":336.96,"body":"job but do it really really well now if that's "},{"startTime":329.94,"endTime":336.96,"body":"being said though that implies that there's time  "},{"startTime":336.96,"endTime":347.1,"body":"and energy and effort devoted to that really "},{"startTime":336.96,"endTime":347.1,"body":"excellent level of teaching and so you know  "},{"startTime":347.1,"endTime":352.8,"body":"bringing it back to that value question okay I "},{"startTime":347.1,"endTime":352.8,"body":"can do that I can teach it really, really well  "},{"startTime":352.8,"endTime":360.6,"body":"it's going to take me this amount of time and after being a teacher for "},{"startTime":375.36,"endTime":381.3,"body":"I say poor my Dean I think she meant well because "},{"startTime":375.36,"endTime":381.3,"body":"I really adored her I respected her very much  "},{"startTime":381.3,"endTime":390.78,"body":"but I she said so your evaluations you essentially "},{"startTime":381.3,"endTime":390.78,"body":"like got a C, like you like as a grade, right. Like  "},{"startTime":390.78,"endTime":394.98,"body":"if you look at like your grade point average, you're like a C teacher and I was like so,  "},{"startTime":394.98,"endTime":400.86,"body":"not only am I on the JV team but I'm also I "},{"startTime":394.98,"endTime":400.86,"body":"got a C and I you know tend to be a bit of  "},{"startTime":401.52,"endTime":407.16,"body":"I always tease a recovering perfectionist so "},{"startTime":401.52,"endTime":407.16,"body":"I'm used to being an A. I want to be an A teacher  "},{"startTime":407.16,"endTime":414.06,"body":"and I worked hard to like I felt like the work "},{"startTime":407.16,"endTime":414.06,"body":"I was putting in was A but it wasn't you know  "},{"startTime":414.06,"endTime":422.04,"body":"and I needed a lot more support on like you said "},{"startTime":414.06,"endTime":422.04,"body":"what does teaching well look like? And I had to  "},{"startTime":422.04,"endTime":428.88,"body":"figure that out over many semesters going forward "},{"startTime":422.04,"endTime":428.88,"body":"that wasn't easy work to figure out it was how  "},{"startTime":428.88,"endTime":438.66,"body":"to get a lot of feedback that was hard to process "},{"startTime":428.88,"endTime":438.66,"body":"and I needed to lean on a lot of mentorship in  "},{"startTime":438.66,"endTime":444.72,"body":"those early years and it took years. It's not like "},{"startTime":438.66,"endTime":444.72,"body":"a semester thing, it's not like 15 weeks. It's years  "},{"startTime":444.72,"endTime":452.28,"body":"of growing into that role right for me. I might "},{"startTime":444.72,"endTime":452.28,"body":"be, yeah, I might need to stay on JV for a while."},{"startTime":454.92,"endTime":461.58,"body":"[RO] You know, I'm thinking up to this point a big "},{"startTime":454.92,"endTime":461.58,"body":"focus has been us talking about articulating and  "},{"startTime":461.58,"endTime":470.22,"body":"capturing the value that the individual or the "},{"startTime":461.58,"endTime":470.22,"body":"educator the nurse professional right wherever  "},{"startTime":470.22,"endTime":474.72,"body":"they may be is bringing to the institution. I "},{"startTime":470.22,"endTime":474.72,"body":"I would like us to flip that coin for a second  "},{"startTime":474.72,"endTime":481.56,"body":"on the other side of that coin is the value that "},{"startTime":474.72,"endTime":481.56,"body":"the institution can create for the employee, right,  "},{"startTime":481.56,"endTime":487.86,"body":"and within the context of academia the school or "},{"startTime":481.56,"endTime":487.86,"body":"college of nursing, can create for the faculty  "},{"startTime":487.86,"endTime":493.02,"body":"member. And I think this is incredibly important "},{"startTime":487.86,"endTime":493.02,"body":"because we're facing a time where we have a high  "},{"startTime":493.02,"endTime":497.58,"body":"attrition out of academia we know we are facing "},{"startTime":493.02,"endTime":497.58,"body":"a faculty shortage and we're going to continue to  "},{"startTime":497.58,"endTime":505.08,"body":"face a worsening faculty shortage. And so Kate I'm "},{"startTime":497.58,"endTime":505.08,"body":"curious to hear your thoughts about how academic  "},{"startTime":505.08,"endTime":513.54,"body":"institutions can increase value that really plays "},{"startTime":505.08,"endTime":513.54,"body":"a role in recruiting and retaining high performing  "},{"startTime":513.54,"endTime":517.235,"body":"faculty that do their jobs well and are committed "},{"startTime":513.54,"endTime":517.235,"body":"to doing their jobs well."},{"startTime":517.235,"endTime":525.9,"body":"[KJ] Yeah, ironically, I don't think that there's that much difference between "},{"startTime":517.235,"endTime":525.9,"body":"what you have to do for recruiting and retaining  "},{"startTime":525.9,"endTime":533.16,"body":"faculty than there is for other roles...it's "},{"startTime":525.9,"endTime":533.16,"body":"about that connection to the workplace and to the,  "},{"startTime":534.0,"endTime":538.44,"body":"you know, the mission, vision and values is "},{"startTime":534.0,"endTime":538.44,"body":"that something I can go to work every day and  "},{"startTime":538.44,"endTime":547.98,"body":"feel good about, right. So I think first I would "},{"startTime":538.44,"endTime":547.98,"body":"say know me, know what I need know, what I want  "},{"startTime":547.98,"endTime":555.96,"body":"know, what's important to me as an employee, as an "},{"startTime":547.98,"endTime":555.96,"body":"educator. You know, I don't want to be seen just as  "},{"startTime":555.96,"endTime":564.12,"body":"one of the crowd. I want somebody and hopefully "},{"startTime":555.96,"endTime":564.12,"body":"it's the person that I report to or work with  "},{"startTime":564.12,"endTime":570.9,"body":"closely to know me well as an individual "},{"startTime":564.12,"endTime":570.9,"body":"and I don't mean you know personally, we have  "},{"startTime":570.9,"endTime":578.16,"body":"to go out and be best friends, but I mean know "},{"startTime":570.9,"endTime":578.16,"body":"my professional value and what I bring as  "},{"startTime":578.16,"endTime":583.26,"body":"an individual. I think that's really important. "},{"startTime":578.16,"endTime":583.26,"body":"I think providing development opportunities  "},{"startTime":583.26,"endTime":589.8,"body":"is huge and we talked about that already kind "},{"startTime":583.26,"endTime":589.8,"body":"of helping people move from novice to expert  "},{"startTime":589.8,"endTime":597.12,"body":"or wherever they may be in in their trajectory, "},{"startTime":589.8,"endTime":597.12,"body":"you know getting them off the JV and onto the  "},{"startTime":597.12,"endTime":606.06,"body":"and you know, onto the upper division team."},{"startTime":597.12,"endTime":606.06,"body":"I think one thing we can do is whenever possible  "},{"startTime":607.08,"endTime":613.32,"body":"have me teaching courses that I'm passionate "},{"startTime":607.08,"endTime":613.32,"body":"about. I promise you that that those will be  "},{"startTime":613.32,"endTime":618.48,"body":"the ones that I'm teaching really, really well. "},{"startTime":613.32,"endTime":618.48,"body":"Now, I understand that as an employee, sometimes  "},{"startTime":618.48,"endTime":624.66,"body":"I have to do something that isn't the thing "},{"startTime":618.48,"endTime":624.66,"body":"that I'm most passionate about and if  "},{"startTime":624.66,"endTime":636.0,"body":"we are having a good working relationship where I "},{"startTime":624.66,"endTime":636.0,"body":"feel valued and you are, I see the person who  "},{"startTime":636.0,"endTime":644.28,"body":"does the assignments as someone who cares about "},{"startTime":636.0,"endTime":644.28,"body":"my work experience, then I'm willing to do what's  "},{"startTime":644.28,"endTime":652.14,"body":"needed to help the bigger picture, right, but I "},{"startTime":644.28,"endTime":652.14,"body":"also want to have those opportunities to teach  "},{"startTime":652.14,"endTime":658.5,"body":"what I'm passionate about and so I think "},{"startTime":652.14,"endTime":658.5,"body":"if there's a way, you know, I don't know in the  "},{"startTime":658.5,"endTime":663.36,"body":"recruiting process people often ask what they're "},{"startTime":658.5,"endTime":663.36,"body":"going to be teaching and  you know we sometimes  "},{"startTime":663.36,"endTime":671.7,"body":"say, whatever we need you to teach, you know, we'll "},{"startTime":663.36,"endTime":671.7,"body":"try to put you in the courses that you prefer, uh  "},{"startTime":671.7,"endTime":678.3,"body":"I think that one's that one's an interesting "},{"startTime":671.7,"endTime":678.3,"body":"one. I think another thing we can do is help  "},{"startTime":679.14,"endTime":686.58,"body":"faculty especially teaching faculty but maybe all "},{"startTime":679.14,"endTime":686.58,"body":"faculty expand their professional network. We can  "},{"startTime":686.58,"endTime":696.24,"body":"get really siled in our you know our department "},{"startTime":686.58,"endTime":696.24,"body":"within our college, within our university but  "},{"startTime":697.02,"endTime":705.78,"body":"networks create opportunities and so, you know, and "},{"startTime":697.02,"endTime":705.78,"body":"leaders have networks and so the more that  "},{"startTime":705.78,"endTime":714.0,"body":"you can pull people into networks and have them "},{"startTime":705.78,"endTime":714.0,"body":"start creating a network of their own, the richer  "},{"startTime":714.0,"endTime":721.2,"body":"their professional life is going to be so if you "},{"startTime":714.0,"endTime":721.2,"body":"know I'm interviewing a school at a school and  "},{"startTime":721.2,"endTime":727.62,"body":"I find out that it's there's a dean there who's "},{"startTime":721.2,"endTime":727.62,"body":"really good at doing that that would be appealing  "},{"startTime":727.62,"endTime":736.08,"body":"to me, I would find that something that I "},{"startTime":727.62,"endTime":736.08,"body":"would be drawn to. I think meeting one on one  "},{"startTime":737.16,"endTime":746.16,"body":"is an example of demonstrating how you "},{"startTime":737.16,"endTime":746.16,"body":"care about this person's contribution to the  "},{"startTime":746.16,"endTime":751.92,"body":"organization and again I know as you know a "},{"startTime":746.16,"endTime":751.92,"body":"leader myself the time it takes to do that  "},{"startTime":751.92,"endTime":761.1,"body":"is is significant, but boy I think talk about ROI."},{"startTime":751.92,"endTime":761.1,"body":"You get a pretty big ROI from that time investment . "},{"startTime":761.76,"endTime":769.74,"body":"And then the only other one I can think of really "},{"startTime":761.76,"endTime":769.74,"body":"is about developing a healthy work environment a  "},{"startTime":769.74,"endTime":778.86,"body":"culture where teaching and research are equally "},{"startTime":769.74,"endTime":778.86,"body":"valued and so calling out when things  "},{"startTime":778.86,"endTime":787.56,"body":"are said that make one seem less than the other "},{"startTime":778.86,"endTime":787.56,"body":"or making a special effort to elevate teaching  "},{"startTime":787.56,"endTime":793.92,"body":"when it's important and so I think there's "},{"startTime":787.56,"endTime":793.92,"body":"you know a lot of things that that can be done.  "},{"startTime":794.76,"endTime":802.2,"body":"We're all humans and and it's hard sometimes "},{"startTime":794.76,"endTime":802.2,"body":"to do all those things on a daily basis, but to  "},{"startTime":802.2,"endTime":806.34,"body":"me a leader's primary responsibility "},{"startTime":802.2,"endTime":806.34,"body":"is creating a healthy work environment.  "},{"startTime":807.06,"endTime":814.26,"body":"So that's a question I would ask if "},{"startTime":807.06,"endTime":814.26,"body":"being interviewed, you know, tell me about  "},{"startTime":814.26,"endTime":819.48,"body":"the work environment and if nobody says the word "},{"startTime":814.26,"endTime":819.48,"body":"healthy then I'm gonna be a little bit worried.  "},{"startTime":821.16,"endTime":825.24,"body":"[RO] You bring up a lot of really important points "},{"startTime":821.16,"endTime":825.24,"body":"and two things that are really resonating for  "},{"startTime":825.24,"endTime":830.64,"body":"me that I hear in that is making sure that "},{"startTime":825.24,"endTime":830.64,"body":"employees are seen and that they have a voice. "},{"startTime":830.64,"endTime":836.4,"body":"And especially when we think about a voice "},{"startTime":830.64,"endTime":836.4,"body":"that takes my mind to shared governance and  "},{"startTime":836.4,"endTime":841.56,"body":"how we have many colleagues across the country "},{"startTime":836.4,"endTime":841.56,"body":"that are still working at institutions where  "},{"startTime":841.56,"endTime":847.32,"body":"or they're working at institutions where the "},{"startTime":841.56,"endTime":847.32,"body":"institution is still not giving voting rights  "},{"startTime":847.32,"endTime":853.32,"body":"to faculty who are not tenured correct, who may "},{"startTime":847.32,"endTime":853.32,"body":"be on a professional or a clinical track and so  "},{"startTime":853.32,"endTime":858.96,"body":"I think that is a great example of opportunities "},{"startTime":853.32,"endTime":858.96,"body":"to work through shared governance to give voice to.  "},{"startTime":860.28,"endTime":865.38,"body":"And you also mentioned these one-on-one "},{"startTime":860.28,"endTime":865.38,"body":"meetings of being seen, you know, and  "},{"startTime":865.38,"endTime":869.4,"body":"talking with faculty I hear a lot from "},{"startTime":865.38,"endTime":869.4,"body":"you know, Michelle and I do some work  "},{"startTime":869.4,"endTime":873.78,"body":"across the where we get, we're very privileged "},{"startTime":869.4,"endTime":873.78,"body":"and lucky to meet folks from across the country  "},{"startTime":873.78,"endTime":878.7,"body":"and a resounding theme I often hear from "},{"startTime":873.78,"endTime":878.7,"body":"faculty sometimes is that they feel like  "},{"startTime":879.36,"endTime":884.7,"body":"everyone outside their institution can recognize "},{"startTime":879.36,"endTime":884.7,"body":"their contributions and their worth and people  "},{"startTime":884.7,"endTime":892.98,"body":"inside their institution cannot. And so your "},{"startTime":884.7,"endTime":892.98,"body":"words about strategies for helping faculty to  "},{"startTime":892.98,"endTime":899.7,"body":"be seen and understood and known and recognized "},{"startTime":892.98,"endTime":899.7,"body":"and appreciated I think are incredibly important"},{"startTime":901.74,"endTime":910.2,"body":"[KJ] And not...not just applied to teaching "},{"startTime":901.74,"endTime":910.2,"body":"or to being a faculty member. I mean,  "},{"startTime":910.8,"endTime":916.56,"body":"those are the important things that all "},{"startTime":910.8,"endTime":916.56,"body":"individuals in a workplace really would  "},{"startTime":916.56,"endTime":923.28,"body":"benefit from and can benefit from so, but "},{"startTime":916.56,"endTime":923.28,"body":"while we're focusing on academia. I think as  "},{"startTime":923.28,"endTime":930.0,"body":"as a faculty member knowing that someone there "},{"startTime":923.28,"endTime":930.0,"body":"cares about whether I'm kind of moving through  "},{"startTime":930.0,"endTime":936.3,"body":"my professional path in a way that is not "},{"startTime":930.0,"endTime":936.3,"body":"only benefiting the organization but also  "},{"startTime":936.3,"endTime":941.58,"body":"is contributing to my personal growth and "},{"startTime":936.3,"endTime":941.58,"body":"professional growth that's really important.  "},{"startTime":943.2,"endTime":949.56,"body":"[MCM] And I'm thinking when those two things can happen "},{"startTime":943.2,"endTime":949.56,"body":"that alignment it's pretty like magical.
