Throughout this year "},{"startTime":100.68,"endTime":107.76,"body":"we described accomplishments to reform nursing "},{"startTime":100.68,"endTime":107.76,"body":"education and discussed the evolution of nursing  "},{"startTime":107.76,"endTime":115.96,"body":"education research during the 19th century, through "},{"startTime":107.76,"endTime":115.96,"body":"the words of nursing education's early leaders,  "},{"startTime":115.96,"endTime":126.88,"body":"documented from the proceedings of NLN annual "},{"startTime":115.96,"endTime":126.88,"body":"conventions from 1893 to 1952. These publications  "},{"startTime":126.88,"endTime":133.72,"body":"are part of the NLN Archives Collection currently "},{"startTime":126.88,"endTime":133.72,"body":"housed at the Bates Center for the History of  "},{"startTime":133.72,"endTime":142.36,"body":"Nursing at the University of Pennsylvania. This "},{"startTime":133.72,"endTime":142.36,"body":"month we will build on these foci and highlight  "},{"startTime":142.36,"endTime":149.76,"body":"how the Superintendent's Society and then the "},{"startTime":142.36,"endTime":149.76,"body":"National League for Nursing Education or NLNE  "},{"startTime":150.72,"endTime":159.0,"body":"led a movement to bring excellence, inclusivity, "},{"startTime":150.72,"endTime":159.0,"body":"and diversity of thought ideas and perspectives  "},{"startTime":159.0,"endTime":167.96,"body":"to nursing education leaders and faculty. Yet "},{"startTime":159.0,"endTime":167.96,"body":"diversity of membership occurred slowly. In  "},{"startTime":167.96,"endTime":176.4,"body":"fact, it wasn't until 1940 almost 50 years after "},{"startTime":167.96,"endTime":176.4,"body":"the origin of the Society when eligibility of  "},{"startTime":176.4,"endTime":184.08,"body":"membership was open to all; a diversified student "},{"startTime":176.4,"endTime":184.08,"body":"body in integrated schools of nursing would take  "},{"startTime":184.08,"endTime":193.16,"body":"many more years. As early as 1909, at the 15th "},{"startTime":184.08,"endTime":193.16,"body":"annual meeting of the Society in St. Paul,  "},{"startTime":193.16,"endTime":200.92,"body":"Minnesota. Isabelle Hampton Robb spoke about the "},{"startTime":193.16,"endTime":200.92,"body":"importance of annual gatherings to bring diverse  "},{"startTime":200.92,"endTime":208.72,"body":"voices together to confer about the serious "},{"startTime":200.92,"endTime":208.72,"body":"business of educational reform. She asked the  "},{"startTime":208.72,"endTime":215.92,"body":"delegates to rethink the focus of training to "},{"startTime":208.72,"endTime":215.92,"body":"include ward cleanliness and discipline, but  "},{"startTime":215.92,"endTime":223.68,"body":"not at the expense of putting the comfort of the "},{"startTime":215.92,"endTime":223.68,"body":"patient first. Her tenacity to challenge long-held  "},{"startTime":223.68,"endTime":231.8,"body":"beliefs and celebrate the coming together as "},{"startTime":223.68,"endTime":231.8,"body":"colleagues to listen, discuss, and embrace diversity  "},{"startTime":231.8,"endTime":240.8,"body":"of thought would set the tone for the next century. "},{"startTime":231.8,"endTime":240.8,"body":"In her words: \"I have ventured to say things to  "},{"startTime":240.8,"endTime":247.92,"body":"you as they have been said for your thoughtful "},{"startTime":240.8,"endTime":247.92,"body":"consideration, for I feel confident that if such  "},{"startTime":247.92,"endTime":256.64,"body":"is the case in any degree as a body of earnest "},{"startTime":247.92,"endTime":256.64,"body":"women devoted to your work, you will do all in  "},{"startTime":256.64,"endTime":266.28,"body":"your power to make things different.\"  "},{"startTime":256.64,"endTime":266.28,"body":"In subsequent years, members of the society and the  "},{"startTime":266.28,"endTime":275.6,"body":"NLNE embraced Mrs. Robb's call to welcome reform "},{"startTime":266.28,"endTime":275.6,"body":"and challenge traditional assumptions. By the turn  "},{"startTime":275.6,"endTime":284.36,"body":"of the 20th century, leaders of the Society and "},{"startTime":275.6,"endTime":284.36,"body":"the NLNE daringly spoke about the need to embrace  "},{"startTime":284.36,"endTime":293.72,"body":"a broader understanding of the nurses' role. For "},{"startTime":284.36,"endTime":293.72,"body":"example, in 1920 at the 26th annual meeting of  "},{"startTime":293.72,"endTime":303.0,"body":"the NLNE, S. Lillian Clayton discussed the emerging "},{"startTime":293.72,"endTime":303.0,"body":"role of of the community health nurse as clinician, "},{"startTime":303.0,"endTime":311.4,"body":"scientist, and educator, calling on delegates "},{"startTime":303.0,"endTime":311.4,"body":"to envision the nurse \"not merely as a  "},{"startTime":311.4,"endTime":319.72,"body":"practitioner, but as a teacher...with a vision of "},{"startTime":311.4,"endTime":319.72,"body":"right relationships and a talent for effective  "},{"startTime":319.72,"endTime":329.08,"body":"presentations.\" at the same time, members "},{"startTime":319.72,"endTime":329.08,"body":"of the NLNE engaged in debate about whether mental  "},{"startTime":329.08,"endTime":337.56,"body":"work, as the term was used, should be relegated "},{"startTime":329.08,"endTime":337.56,"body":"solely to the state hospitals or if mental work  "},{"startTime":337.56,"endTime":346.48,"body":"belonged as part of the hospital-based nursing "},{"startTime":337.56,"endTime":346.48,"body":"curriculum. What is more, the NLNE opened dialogue  "},{"startTime":346.48,"endTime":354.12,"body":"about the need for movement to higher education as "},{"startTime":346.48,"endTime":354.12,"body":"the basis for instruction, touting the advantages  "},{"startTime":354.12,"endTime":363.92,"body":"to include new knowledge, science, and ethics "},{"startTime":354.12,"endTime":363.92,"body":"as well as technique. These ideas were radical  "},{"startTime":363.92,"endTime":372.08,"body":"departures from traditional customs and standards "},{"startTime":363.92,"endTime":372.08,"body":"that hygiene, ward cleanliness, and technical skills  "},{"startTime":372.08,"endTime":381.6,"body":"defined the nursing role. Diversity of settings and "},{"startTime":372.08,"endTime":381.6,"body":"practice and of methods to teach nursing permeated  "},{"startTime":381.6,"endTime":391.88,"body":"the era and broadened nursing education's scope and "},{"startTime":381.6,"endTime":391.88,"body":"practice. Even the decision of the NLNE in 1930 to  "},{"startTime":391.88,"endTime":398.96,"body":"no longer publish a standardized curriculum, but "},{"startTime":391.88,"endTime":398.96,"body":"rather to provide recommendations to offer schools  "},{"startTime":398.96,"endTime":406.2,"body":"the opportunity to innovate and experiment with "},{"startTime":398.96,"endTime":406.2,"body":"content delivery and teaching strategies, reveals  "},{"startTime":406.2,"endTime":414.88,"body":"the unrelenting commitment of NLNE leadership to "},{"startTime":406.2,"endTime":414.88,"body":"challenge long-held beliefs and foster an openness  "},{"startTime":414.88,"endTime":423.52,"body":"to diverse thinking. Yet, racial diversity"},{"startTime":414.88,"endTime":423.52,"body":"of membership and of students in nursing programs  "},{"startTime":423.52,"endTime":432.6,"body":"was not discussed or fostered as a priority. In "},{"startTime":423.52,"endTime":432.6,"body":"fact, at the mid-century, most nursing education  "},{"startTime":432.6,"endTime":443.4,"body":"programs maintained strict racial segregation. In "},{"startTime":432.6,"endTime":443.4,"body":"1950, only 6% of all graduate and student nurses  "},{"startTime":443.4,"endTime":450.68,"body":"in the United States were Black, and the nursing "},{"startTime":443.4,"endTime":450.68,"body":"educational system remained highly segregated  "},{"startTime":450.68,"endTime":458.48,"body":"with separate schools of nursing for individuals "},{"startTime":450.68,"endTime":458.48,"body":"who identified as Black. At the time, a mere 200 out  "},{"startTime":458.48,"endTime":467.48,"body":"of approximately 1,200 schools of nursing had at "},{"startTime":458.48,"endTime":467.48,"body":"least one black student and graduates faced a  "},{"startTime":467.48,"endTime":476.8,"body":"divided employment field and did not participate "},{"startTime":467.48,"endTime":476.8,"body":"equally.
