Sure,  "},{"startTime":129.52,"endTime":136.92,"body":"so our study was a pilot study and so we "},{"startTime":129.52,"endTime":136.92,"body":"used a one group pre-test, post-test design  "},{"startTime":136.92,"endTime":143.56,"body":"and we examined the effect of a virtual reality "},{"startTime":136.92,"endTime":143.56,"body":"experience that we created on nursing student  "},{"startTime":143.56,"endTime":150.52,"body":"empathy towards older adults. So I've lived in "},{"startTime":143.56,"endTime":150.52,"body":"the gerontology space for about 10 years now in  "},{"startTime":150.52,"endTime":157.08,"body":"my career and I observed just as many others I'm "},{"startTime":150.52,"endTime":157.08,"body":"sure have that students really have these negative  "},{"startTime":157.08,"endTime":164.56,"body":"perceptions about aging and about caring for older "},{"startTime":157.08,"endTime":164.56,"body":"adults. That was where kind of this project  "},{"startTime":164.56,"endTime":172.16,"body":"came out of was my desire to really change "},{"startTime":164.56,"endTime":172.16,"body":"this. Great, well that is true what you just said  "},{"startTime":172.16,"endTime":178.16,"body":"because you know I deal with senior students quite "},{"startTime":172.16,"endTime":178.16,"body":"frequently that are going into their internship  "},{"startTime":178.16,"endTime":183.56,"body":"and  most of them want to go into the "},{"startTime":178.16,"endTime":183.56,"body":"beginning of life not the end of life and it's  "},{"startTime":183.56,"endTime":188.32,"body":"really unfortunate and as you know our population "},{"startTime":183.56,"endTime":188.32,"body":"of elderly is increasing pretty dramatically and  "},{"startTime":188.32,"endTime":193.52,"body":"will continue to and there's such a need for this "},{"startTime":188.32,"endTime":193.52,"body":"so I think this idea of introducing empathy and  "},{"startTime":193.52,"endTime":198.48,"body":"more understanding about the geriatric population "},{"startTime":193.52,"endTime":198.48,"body":"can very be very helpful and also gaining  "},{"startTime":198.48,"endTime":204.56,"body":"some interest and traction and students maybe "},{"startTime":198.48,"endTime":204.56,"body":"pursuing this direction. So please describe the VR  "},{"startTime":204.56,"endTime":210.88,"body":"development process and how the perspective taking "},{"startTime":204.56,"endTime":210.88,"body":"was incorporated into that process, into the VR.  "},{"startTime":210.88,"endTime":217.44,"body":"Sure, sure. So I guess just a little bit about how I "},{"startTime":210.88,"endTime":217.44,"body":"kind of came to VR was when I started figuring out  "},{"startTime":217.44,"endTime":223.92,"body":"trying to decide like how do I get my students engaged and interested in caring  "},{"startTime":223.92,"endTime":230.6,"body":"for the older adults? The literature shows "},{"startTime":223.92,"endTime":230.6,"body":"that immersive perspective taking experiences is  "},{"startTime":230.6,"endTime":238.0,"body":"really what kind of moves the needle in terms of "},{"startTime":230.6,"endTime":238.0,"body":"facilitating empathy and even changing attitudes.  "},{"startTime":238.0,"endTime":244.76,"body":"With VR becoming more accessible to schools "},{"startTime":238.0,"endTime":244.76,"body":"of nursing I thought like oh maybe this might work."},{"startTime":244.76,"endTime":254.44,"body":"I went to my colleague Dr. Ramakrishnan, Arun, "},{"startTime":244.76,"endTime":254.44,"body":"and said this is what I want to do can you do it, "},{"startTime":254.44,"endTime":259.12,"body":"because he had already been working with VR and "},{"startTime":254.44,"endTime":259.12,"body":"and some other faculty in the College of Nursing  "},{"startTime":259.12,"endTime":265.04,"body":"and Health Professions and he said of course I can. "},{"startTime":259.12,"endTime":265.04,"body":"You need to go write the story, come up with  "},{"startTime":265.04,"endTime":270.76,"body":"a script and come back to me. That's really "},{"startTime":265.04,"endTime":270.76,"body":"the first step of this process is looking at what  "},{"startTime":270.76,"endTime":278.6,"body":"are my learning objectives and how can I create a "},{"startTime":270.76,"endTime":278.6,"body":"story that's going to help my  "},{"startTime":278.6,"endTime":284.24,"body":"students meet those learning objectives and so "},{"startTime":278.6,"endTime":284.24,"body":"that's how I started writing a story. The story  "},{"startTime":284.24,"endTime":290.76,"body":"has to be authentic. It has to be relatable, has "},{"startTime":284.24,"endTime":290.76,"body":"to be plausible. I knew I kind of  "},{"startTime":290.76,"endTime":295.24,"body":"hit the nail on the head when after the first "},{"startTime":290.76,"endTime":295.24,"body":"run of this VR I had students coming up to me  "},{"startTime":295.24,"endTime":302.16,"body":"afterwards and was like, that story is something "},{"startTime":295.24,"endTime":302.16,"body":"that I just experienced with my grandparent or I  "},{"startTime":302.16,"endTime":308.4,"body":"just saw my mother have to have this "},{"startTime":302.16,"endTime":308.4,"body":"really difficult conversation with their parent so  "},{"startTime":308.4,"endTime":313.84,"body":"I knew that I was on to something with that, with "},{"startTime":308.4,"endTime":313.84,"body":"the story that we presented in the VR. It needs  "},{"startTime":313.84,"endTime":318.88,"body":"to be engaging it also needs to have an emotional "},{"startTime":313.84,"endTime":318.88,"body":"component. If we're going to try to tap into  "},{"startTime":318.88,"endTime":325.56,"body":"empathy and possibly change some perspectives "},{"startTime":318.88,"endTime":325.56,"body":"there has to be some type of emotional and not  "},{"startTime":325.56,"endTime":331.28,"body":"just a here's their medical background, right, there "},{"startTime":325.56,"endTime":331.28,"body":"has to be a story and kind of getting to know the  "},{"startTime":331.28,"endTime":336.84,"body":"character within the story. So kind of like a hook. "},{"startTime":331.28,"endTime":336.84,"body":"Yeah, kind of you there needs to be a little  "},{"startTime":336.84,"endTime":342.56,"body":"bit of a problem and then how are we going to "},{"startTime":336.84,"endTime":342.56,"body":"address this problem and why does it matter."},{"startTime":342.56,"endTime":348.56,"body":"And then always having some other "},{"startTime":342.56,"endTime":348.56,"body":"subject matter experts review the  "},{"startTime":348.56,"endTime":353.4,"body":"story. I actually had some older adults "},{"startTime":348.56,"endTime":353.4,"body":"in my own family I kind of gave them the story,  "},{"startTime":353.4,"endTime":359.2,"body":"so what do you think, like does this seem "},{"startTime":353.4,"endTime":359.2,"body":"plausible and accurate? And then it  "},{"startTime":359.2,"endTime":363.72,"body":"was all about preparing for filming much "},{"startTime":359.2,"endTime":363.72,"body":"like you would create a simulation. You have  "},{"startTime":363.72,"endTime":369.24,"body":"to start to prepare and think about where are we "},{"startTime":363.72,"endTime":369.24,"body":"going to film it, what's the location, what's the  "},{"startTime":369.24,"endTime":374.4,"body":"environment need ,what kind of props might we need, "},{"startTime":369.24,"endTime":374.4,"body":"do we need to hire actors or are we going to use  "},{"startTime":374.4,"endTime":380.36,"body":"nursing faculty and students, do we need SPs? So you "},{"startTime":374.4,"endTime":380.36,"body":"kind of have to go through that preparation and  "},{"startTime":380.36,"endTime":384.84,"body":"and I'm going to see that this whole process came "},{"startTime":380.36,"endTime":384.84,"body":"together very organically for us, but now looking  "},{"startTime":384.84,"endTime":392.04,"body":"back on it we've really like kind of put it this "},{"startTime":384.84,"endTime":392.04,"body":"step by-step process together and then you film it  "},{"startTime":392.04,"endTime":398.68,"body":"and so the filming is always plan more time than "},{"startTime":392.04,"endTime":398.68,"body":"you think it's going to take because it definitely  "},{"startTime":398.68,"endTime":404.44,"body":"takes a bit of time. Then we filmed third "},{"startTime":398.68,"endTime":404.44,"body":"and first perspective and that's where we really  "},{"startTime":404.44,"endTime":410.84,"body":"brought in that perspective-taking aspect of this "},{"startTime":404.44,"endTime":410.84,"body":"virtual reality. They require a little  "},{"startTime":410.84,"endTime":416.68,"body":"bit different filming methods. Third person "},{"startTime":410.84,"endTime":416.68,"body":"perspective is we use an iPhone on a tripod is how  "},{"startTime":416.68,"endTime":425.88,"body":"we film the scene. This can be done up to "},{"startTime":416.68,"endTime":425.88,"body":"360°. So for our VR and that we used in "},{"startTime":425.88,"endTime":431.16,"body":"this study we did 180 degree just because "},{"startTime":425.88,"endTime":431.16,"body":"of the environment we were in, but you can do this  "},{"startTime":431.16,"endTime":436.16,"body":"as 360 and so in the third person perspective "},{"startTime":431.16,"endTime":436.16,"body":"the learner is going to feel like they are in  "},{"startTime":436.16,"endTime":442.36,"body":"the space with the characters. Oh great okay and "},{"startTime":436.16,"endTime":442.36,"body":"so it's not computer generated it's real like  "},{"startTime":442.36,"endTime":446.84,"body":"a real movie and so they feel like they're in the "},{"startTime":442.36,"endTime":446.84,"body":"space. They're not interacting with the characters  "},{"startTime":446.84,"endTime":452.84,"body":"they can't interact with the environment, but "},{"startTime":446.84,"endTime":452.84,"body":"they're there observing and seeing things unfold. "},{"startTime":452.84,"endTime":458.48,"body":"Then the first person perspective for filming we "},{"startTime":452.84,"endTime":458.48,"body":"actually use a head-mounted gear that you can put  "},{"startTime":458.48,"endTime":464.88,"body":"the iPhone right in and then so for our VR the "},{"startTime":458.48,"endTime":464.88,"body":"older adult put this little head mount on, put  "},{"startTime":464.88,"endTime":472.48,"body":"the iPhone right in it and then we refilm the "},{"startTime":464.88,"endTime":472.48,"body":"same scenes from the older adult's perspective  "},{"startTime":472.48,"endTime":477.48,"body":"and so in the VR when the students get they "},{"startTime":472.48,"endTime":477.48,"body":"see both. They'll do the third person and then  "},{"startTime":477.48,"endTime":482.68,"body":"they get to experience some of the first person "},{"startTime":477.48,"endTime":482.68,"body":"person perspective and so when they're in that  "},{"startTime":482.68,"endTime":488.16,"body":"first person perspective that's where they are "},{"startTime":482.68,"endTime":488.16,"body":"really in the shoes of for us it was the  "},{"startTime":488.16,"endTime":493.16,"body":"older adult, but for whoever your main character is "},{"startTime":488.16,"endTime":493.16,"body":"that's when they are in those shoes experiencing  "},{"startTime":493.16,"endTime":499.24,"body":"some of these scenes from through their eyes "},{"startTime":493.16,"endTime":499.24,"body":"really and that's where that perspective taking  "},{"startTime":499.24,"endTime":506.64,"body":"really comes to life for them. Sure, yeah.  "},{"startTime":499.24,"endTime":506.64,"body":"And so in our VR we were then after you do  "},{"startTime":506.64,"endTime":511.72,"body":"the filming you then go into your editing process "},{"startTime":506.64,"endTime":511.72,"body":"and so that's where you can add in some different  "},{"startTime":511.72,"endTime":517.04,"body":"effects, cut it down, make sure it's not too long. "},{"startTime":511.72,"endTime":517.04,"body":"We always want to keep things kind  "},{"startTime":517.04,"endTime":524.04,"body":"of short and right to the point and for us that's "},{"startTime":517.04,"endTime":524.04,"body":"where we added in some of the sensory changes. So  "},{"startTime":524.04,"endTime":527.92,"body":"the students are in first person perspective "},{"startTime":524.04,"endTime":527.92,"body":"and they're experiencing some visual age- "},{"startTime":527.92,"endTime":535.12,"body":"related changes and they're experiencing some "},{"startTime":527.92,"endTime":535.12,"body":"auditory age-related changes and so that's where  "},{"startTime":535.12,"endTime":542.36,"body":"again that perspective-taking really comes in. I "},{"startTime":535.12,"endTime":542.36,"body":"don't know what else can I add to that? I really  "},{"startTime":542.36,"endTime":546.28,"body":"appreciate you talking about the first and third "},{"startTime":542.36,"endTime":546.28,"body":"perspective and the difference between the two  "},{"startTime":546.28,"endTime":552.84,"body":"and how both of them can be used to really engage "},{"startTime":546.28,"endTime":552.84,"body":"the student in a way that's is authentic or more  "},{"startTime":552.84,"endTime":559.52,"body":"authentic. So talk a little bit about "},{"startTime":552.84,"endTime":559.52,"body":"the logistics and it's a great idea, great  "},{"startTime":559.52,"endTime":566.0,"body":"concept. What is the time, the cost, the "},{"startTime":559.52,"endTime":566.0,"body":"training involved and also how are you using  "},{"startTime":566.0,"endTime":575.6,"body":"this for clinical hours? Sure. So in regards to the "},{"startTime":566.0,"endTime":575.6,"body":"logistics it's I'm going to say the way we filmed  "},{"startTime":575.6,"endTime":583.36,"body":"ours and if you're using the VR for this type of "},{"startTime":575.6,"endTime":583.36,"body":"of learning I think it's very manageable."},{"startTime":583.36,"endTime":590.96,"body":"I created the story. I wrote the story. We "},{"startTime":583.36,"endTime":590.96,"body":"hired, we had two SPs and then we actually had two  "},{"startTime":590.96,"endTime":595.2,"body":"students who volunteered because we actually have "},{"startTime":590.96,"endTime":595.2,"body":"a little flashback in there and so we have them as  "},{"startTime":595.2,"endTime":601.84,"body":"like their younger selves. So we had a couple of "},{"startTime":595.2,"endTime":601.84,"body":"students who who volunteered, but we hired two SPs."},{"startTime":601.84,"endTime":610.08,"body":"Standardized patients. Yeah, so actors "},{"startTime":601.84,"endTime":610.08,"body":"and I did some training with them.  "},{"startTime":610.08,"endTime":616.68,"body":"You can do it virtually. We actually filmed "},{"startTime":610.08,"endTime":616.68,"body":"this during Covid so everything was done virtually  "},{"startTime":616.68,"endTime":623.36,"body":"until the actual day of filming. So a little "},{"startTime":616.68,"endTime":623.36,"body":"bit again just helping them prepare the script,  "},{"startTime":623.36,"endTime":628.84,"body":"what's the feeling, what's the emotions going on in "},{"startTime":623.36,"endTime":628.84,"body":"the scenario, just like you would for a simulation  "},{"startTime":628.84,"endTime":635.44,"body":"really when you're training standardized patient. "},{"startTime":628.84,"endTime":635.44,"body":"And then the filming is probably the  "},{"startTime":635.44,"endTime":641.68,"body":"most time consuming. I'm going to say it took us "},{"startTime":635.44,"endTime":641.68,"body":"about eight hours to film this and this piece is  "},{"startTime":641.68,"endTime":648.48,"body":"total when we're running it is about a 20 minute "},{"startTime":641.68,"endTime":648.48,"body":"VR from really getting them set up with the  "},{"startTime":648.48,"endTime":654.4,"body":"equipment until they're taking the headset off "},{"startTime":648.48,"endTime":654.4,"body":"is about 15 to 20 minutes. So that took about  "},{"startTime":654.4,"endTime":661.44,"body":"eight hours of filming. That's "},{"startTime":654.4,"endTime":661.44,"body":"the logistics in terms of time to do. It in  "},{"startTime":661.44,"endTime":669.08,"body":"terms of clinical or I guess like how they counted "},{"startTime":661.44,"endTime":669.08,"body":"for clinical hours I think was the other part of  "},{"startTime":669.08,"endTime":679.8,"body":"that question. Yes, so I think CVR is one "},{"startTime":669.08,"endTime":679.8,"body":"piece of really like a holistic way to present the  "},{"startTime":679.8,"endTime":686.56,"body":"curriculum or to achieve your outcomes "},{"startTime":679.8,"endTime":686.56,"body":"so I have used this VR in a multi-layered  "},{"startTime":686.56,"endTime":692.52,"body":"simulation and so there's other things that the "},{"startTime":686.56,"endTime":692.52,"body":"students are doing as part of that simulation and  "},{"startTime":692.52,"endTime":697.84,"body":"so we count that as a full clinical day. It ends "},{"startTime":692.52,"endTime":697.84,"body":"up being, it's about four hours, three and a half  "},{"startTime":697.84,"endTime":703.92,"body":"hours total that they're at the sim lab and that "},{"startTime":697.84,"endTime":703.92,"body":"counts as a full clinical day. I've also used it  "},{"startTime":703.92,"endTime":709.72,"body":"as part of class so where I've been able to have "},{"startTime":703.92,"endTime":709.72,"body":"students rotate through the VR lab and then come  "},{"startTime":709.72,"endTime":719.32,"body":"back to class and and we've used it just within "},{"startTime":709.72,"endTime":719.32,"body":"our course content so there are options. Are you  "},{"startTime":719.32,"endTime":724.6,"body":"doing a pre-brief and a debrief with them?"},{"startTime":719.32,"endTime":724.6,"body":"So yes, we are now. For this study we didn't. We were  "},{"startTime":724.6,"endTime":730.24,"body":"just pilot study, just let's see if this "},{"startTime":724.6,"endTime":730.24,"body":"intervention does what we want it  "},{"startTime":730.24,"endTime":735.0,"body":"to do, right, yes we have a pre-brief and "},{"startTime":730.24,"endTime":735.0,"body":"then we do have a debrief and that's the great  "},{"startTime":735.0,"endTime":742.16,"body":"thing with VR is that you can either debrief "},{"startTime":735.0,"endTime":742.16,"body":"right away or you can have them if  "},{"startTime":742.16,"endTime":747.2,"body":"you have a VR lab that they can go in and watch "},{"startTime":742.16,"endTime":747.2,"body":"it and then they can come back to the class the  "},{"startTime":747.2,"endTime":753.44,"body":"day after and you can debrief as a whole group "},{"startTime":747.2,"endTime":753.44,"body":"and so I do it right away because it's  "},{"startTime":753.44,"endTime":759.84,"body":"part of our our simulation day but VR kind of "},{"startTime":753.44,"endTime":759.84,"body":"gives you some options in that you can do it  "},{"startTime":759.84,"endTime":766.48,"body":"in the classroom a day later, you can do it right "},{"startTime":759.84,"endTime":766.48,"body":"away, you have those those again that convenience  "},{"startTime":766.48,"endTime":771.96,"body":"of using it. So talk about briefly about how you "},{"startTime":766.48,"endTime":771.96,"body":"measured it. What you were measuring and how you  "},{"startTime":771.96,"endTime":778.92,"body":"measured it? I think that's important too."},{"startTime":771.96,"endTime":778.92,"body":"Sure. So measure for this particular study we  "},{"startTime":778.92,"endTime":786.2,"body":"used the Kiersma-Chen Empathy Scale so we did "},{"startTime":778.92,"endTime":786.2,"body":"pre- and post-test and then we also did as  "},{"startTime":786.2,"endTime":793.24,"body":"part of our demographic questionnaire we "},{"startTime":786.2,"endTime":793.24,"body":"also looked at have they used VR before and so we  "},{"startTime":793.24,"endTime":798.0,"body":"wanted to really see, now most of the generation "},{"startTime":793.24,"endTime":798.0,"body":"we're working with now in nursing school they've  "},{"startTime":798.0,"endTime":805.84,"body":"all used VR. I'm in the undergraduate "},{"startTime":798.0,"endTime":805.84,"body":"space. They all have multiple experiences with VR so  "},{"startTime":805.84,"endTime":810.8,"body":"we didn't really have any, we didn't see "},{"startTime":805.84,"endTime":810.8,"body":"anything in results in regards to that being  "},{"startTime":810.8,"endTime":817.32,"body":"having any type of confounding variable or any "},{"startTime":810.8,"endTime":817.32,"body":"effect on the results. But we did see a  "},{"startTime":817.32,"endTime":825.32,"body":"significant improvement in empathy after the VR "},{"startTime":817.32,"endTime":825.32,"body":"intervention and so that was pretty exciting  "},{"startTime":825.32,"endTime":831.52,"body":"and we do have other studies in the works so. "},{"startTime":825.32,"endTime":831.52,"body":"Oh awesome! I like that you measured something  "},{"startTime":831.52,"endTime":838.28,"body":"other than student satisfaction. You were"},{"startTime":831.52,"endTime":838.28,"body":"measuring a very specific outcome  "},{"startTime":838.28,"endTime":844.96,"body":"that's related to patient care and so that was very "},{"startTime":838.28,"endTime":844.96,"body":"attractive about your research here that you  "},{"startTime":844.96,"endTime":848.52,"body":"did. Tell us a little bit about what you're"},{"startTime":844.96,"endTime":848.52,"body":"doing going forward with this work?"},{"startTime":848.52,"endTime":857.52,"body":"Sure. So I actually am currently writing up a "},{"startTime":848.52,"endTime":857.52,"body":"study that we conducted earlier this year where we  "},{"startTime":857.52,"endTime":867.88,"body":"did an actual control group study. We compared "},{"startTime":857.52,"endTime":867.88,"body":"the VR intervention with an actual narrative  "},{"startTime":867.88,"endTime":874.28,"body":"case study.
