Well I'll go ahead and start. So it's a  "},{"startTime":148.4,"endTime":154.96,"body":"real pleasure to be here with you and it's a great "},{"startTime":148.4,"endTime":154.96,"body":"pleasure to be working with NLN. They have been our  "},{"startTime":154.96,"endTime":162.96,"body":"longtime supporters and cheerers along the way and "},{"startTime":154.96,"endTime":162.96,"body":"we really appreciate our friendship and our  "},{"startTime":162.96,"endTime":170.44,"body":"relationship with them. Goodness, the projects that "},{"startTime":162.96,"endTime":170.44,"body":"we are doing right now, we are actively working  "},{"startTime":170.44,"endTime":178.44,"body":"with the National Student Nurses' Association.  "},{"startTime":170.44,"endTime":178.44,"body":"That is a group of 60,000 nursing students and  "},{"startTime":178.44,"endTime":184.68,"body":"we presented this notion of professional identity "},{"startTime":178.44,"endTime":184.68,"body":"to them and the fact that there are four pillars  "},{"startTime":184.68,"endTime":191.08,"body":"or four domains and they were all over it and "},{"startTime":184.68,"endTime":191.08,"body":"said, oh yes, that's what we want. We want that to  "},{"startTime":191.08,"endTime":201.0,"body":"be the pillars of our organization that those are "},{"startTime":191.08,"endTime":201.0,"body":"the pillars of our Honor Society and their entire  "},{"startTime":201.0,"endTime":207.88,"body":"leadership effort is moved around this so it's "},{"startTime":201.0,"endTime":207.88,"body":"enormously important to have that kind of pipeline.  "},{"startTime":207.88,"endTime":214.88,"body":"And the number of advisers for National "},{"startTime":207.88,"endTime":214.88,"body":"Student Nurses' Association that are interested  "},{"startTime":214.88,"endTime":224.68,"body":"is unbelievable. So that's, I say one of the most "},{"startTime":214.88,"endTime":224.68,"body":"exciting areas. Secondly, I would say that you all  "},{"startTime":224.68,"endTime":231.12,"body":"are aware that there's an organization called "},{"startTime":224.68,"endTime":231.12,"body":"the Tri-Council, which is made up of major nursing  "},{"startTime":231.12,"endTime":239.2,"body":"leaders in the country and the people in AONL "},{"startTime":231.12,"endTime":239.2,"body":"have been working with our team in professional  "},{"startTime":239.2,"endTime":248.44,"body":"identity to propose boldly propose a position "},{"startTime":239.2,"endTime":248.44,"body":"statement on all nurses are leaders and so they  "},{"startTime":248.44,"endTime":254.28,"body":"brought this position paper forward through AONL "},{"startTime":248.44,"endTime":254.28,"body":"and the International Society for Professional  "},{"startTime":254.28,"endTime":260.08,"body":"Identity and Nursing and then brought it to "},{"startTime":254.28,"endTime":260.08,"body":"the attention of the Tri-Council. So we are in  "},{"startTime":260.08,"endTime":265.88,"body":"the process of making sure we've got all of that "},{"startTime":260.08,"endTime":265.88,"body":"information clarified for them and I think we're  "},{"startTime":265.88,"endTime":272.16,"body":"going to have this communicated at the highest "},{"startTime":265.88,"endTime":272.16,"body":"levels. There's a lot of advantage that comes  "},{"startTime":272.16,"endTime":279.8,"body":"from that. I'll stop there on to back well I want "},{"startTime":272.16,"endTime":279.8,"body":"to back us up because we wouldn't even be having  "},{"startTime":279.8,"endTime":286.68,"body":"this conversation if it weren't for Nelda Godfrey. "},{"startTime":279.8,"endTime":286.68,"body":"This has been Nelda's passion in Nelda's work for  "},{"startTime":286.68,"endTime":294.88,"body":"years and years but a little under six years "},{"startTime":286.68,"endTime":294.88,"body":"ago she had this idea of gathering thought  "},{"startTime":294.88,"endTime":301.84,"body":"leaders from around the country to talk about "},{"startTime":294.88,"endTime":301.84,"body":"professional identity and she invited 50 people  "},{"startTime":301.84,"endTime":310.44,"body":"to Kansas to start this conversation and never and "},{"startTime":301.84,"endTime":310.44,"body":"we've had this conversation, she and I never in her  "},{"startTime":310.44,"endTime":318.52,"body":"wildest dreams did she think we would be where "},{"startTime":310.44,"endTime":318.52,"body":"we're at today and we have repeatedly I had the  "},{"startTime":318.52,"endTime":324.88,"body":"great pleasure and privilege of being invited to "},{"startTime":318.52,"endTime":324.88,"body":"that first event, that first thing tank and have  "},{"startTime":324.88,"endTime":332.4,"body":"been part of it ever since but we knew we were on "},{"startTime":324.88,"endTime":332.4,"body":"to something but I don't think any one of us ever  "},{"startTime":332.4,"endTime":342.0,"body":"saw the gravity that this actually had the power "},{"startTime":332.4,"endTime":342.0,"body":"to change the profession or the need. We didn't  "},{"startTime":342.0,"endTime":348.84,"body":"know the need was going to be as great as it is "},{"startTime":342.0,"endTime":348.84,"body":"today, that we need a culture change.  We need  "},{"startTime":348.84,"endTime":355.44,"body":"it desperately in our profession and really in "},{"startTime":348.84,"endTime":355.44,"body":"health care. It's way bigger I think than nursing  "},{"startTime":357.44,"endTime":367.36,"body":"but I give credit to Nelda because it really she "},{"startTime":357.44,"endTime":367.36,"body":"hasn't given up and she's continued to to drive  "},{"startTime":367.36,"endTime":375.6,"body":"us and be positive and be open. Some "},{"startTime":367.36,"endTime":375.6,"body":"of us and me I've been probably one of the big  "},{"startTime":375.6,"endTime":382.32,"body":"push back people of the group and say, but wait, but "},{"startTime":375.6,"endTime":382.32,"body":"wait, let's what about this. And she still  "},{"startTime":382.32,"endTime":388.96,"body":"answers my calls and we still are friends, which is "},{"startTime":382.32,"endTime":388.96,"body":"great. I think it's because we know ultimately  "},{"startTime":388.96,"endTime":396.84,"body":"we all have the same goals and it's been just "},{"startTime":388.96,"endTime":396.84,"body":"a wonderful addition to my career. I can't imagine  "},{"startTime":396.84,"endTime":403.72,"body":"not being a part of this group. It's just been "},{"startTime":396.84,"endTime":403.72,"body":"fabulous. I think, if you would let me  "},{"startTime":403.72,"endTime":410.44,"body":"continue for a moment, what I want to say is I"},{"startTime":403.72,"endTime":410.44,"body":"want you to understand who came together in that  "},{"startTime":410.44,"endTime":417.8,"body":"first think tank. We had equal numbers of educators "},{"startTime":410.44,"endTime":417.8,"body":"of regulators and practice people. You don't ever  "},{"startTime":417.8,"endTime":423.92,"body":"get that in any group. They were representing "},{"startTime":417.8,"endTime":423.92,"body":"every major nursing organization in the country. "},{"startTime":423.92,"endTime":430.04,"body":"We had regulators from Canada and other people "},{"startTime":423.92,"endTime":430.04,"body":"from Canada. We had undergrad students, graduate  "},{"startTime":430.04,"endTime":440.24,"body":"students, CEOs for simulation companies. We had "},{"startTime":430.04,"endTime":440.24,"body":"this marvelous mix of people and we posed to  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":440.24,"endTime":447.28,"body":"we think professional identity is a thing. It "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":440.24,"endTime":447.28,"body":"is a real thing in every other discipline  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":447.28,"endTime":454.32,"body":"besides nursing and if we are going to make this "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":447.28,"endTime":454.32,"body":"an active part of what we do, what is it going to  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":454.32,"endTime":461.84,"body":"need, to how will it be defined, how will it be "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":454.32,"endTime":461.84,"body":"operationalized, and what do we need to do. So we  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":461.84,"endTime":469.72,"body":"had Susan Luparell and Cindy Clark who are fabulous "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":461.84,"endTime":469.72,"body":"colleagues and very skilled at facilitation who  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":469.72,"endTime":476.88,"body":"took us through a day and a half on this. And just "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":469.72,"endTime":476.88,"body":"to give you an example, Beth Phillips was invited  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":476.88,"endTime":486.0,"body":"because one of my colleagues at Kansas had had her "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":476.88,"endTime":486.0,"body":"as a teacher in the online program at Duke and she  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":486.0,"endTime":492.56,"body":"just couldn't quit talking about how fabulous Beth "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":486.0,"endTime":492.56,"body":"was as a teacher and so I'm calling her up and  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":492.56,"endTime":498.84,"body":"saying, you don't know me but why don't you come "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":492.56,"endTime":498.84,"body":"to this thing. And so that as a result, so that  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":498.84,"endTime":508.08,"body":"was the flavor of the whole thing and as a result "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":498.84,"endTime":508.08,"body":"after a day and a half 20% of the attendees said  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":508.08,"endTime":514.84,"body":"we want to be on the steering committee and that "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":508.08,"endTime":514.84,"body":"then named itself the International society for  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":514.84,"endTime":524.28,"body":"Professional Identity in Nursing and we are as "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":514.84,"endTime":524.28,"body":"I said around 650 strong from all over the globe.  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":524.28,"endTime":532.56,"body":"That is impressive, isn't it? I'm sitting "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":524.28,"endTime":532.56,"body":"here first of all thinking about how"},{"speaker":"them","startTime":532.56,"endTime":540.04,"body":"Beth's account of your, Nelda, of your idea "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":532.56,"endTime":540.04,"body":"to do this. I mean, not just an idea, but your  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":540.04,"endTime":547.24,"body":"passion and work and how it did start as one idea "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":540.04,"endTime":547.24,"body":"at some point. And I have about like 500 ideas a  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":547.24,"endTime":554.24,"body":"day and I don't do anything about them. They just "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":547.24,"endTime":554.24,"body":"like swirl around in my head and"},{"speaker":"them","startTime":554.24,"endTime":561.28,"body":"some of them might get on paper, right. I might talk "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":554.24,"endTime":561.28,"body":"about some of them but to create an international  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":561.28,"endTime":569.36,"body":"society, it's, it's really impressive. I'm "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":561.28,"endTime":569.36,"body":"just so...it's very exciting and I also wanted  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":569.36,"endTime":577.32,"body":"to just make a really quick comment about how "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":569.36,"endTime":577.32,"body":"you talked about the people at the table and  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":577.32,"endTime":585.76,"body":"how you had people from practice, administration, "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":577.32,"endTime":585.76,"body":"nursing education and you had this international  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":585.76,"endTime":591.88,"body":"presence right from the start. Usually that comes "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":585.76,"endTime":591.88,"body":"after. That alone is just really impressive  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":591.88,"endTime":597.2,"body":"to me because usually a group will meet "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":591.88,"endTime":597.2,"body":"and think they've got something going on  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":597.2,"endTime":601.28,"body":"and who knows for how long and then be like, "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":597.2,"endTime":601.28,"body":"oh, who else should we have at the table? But the  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":601.28,"endTime":607.16,"body":"fact that you had the table set and ready to go "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":601.28,"endTime":607.16,"body":"at that first conversation I think really says  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":607.16,"endTime":614.4,"body":"something about the need. And then the only other "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":607.16,"endTime":614.4,"body":"thing I wanted to say real quick about Beth about  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":614.4,"endTime":620.52,"body":"being the the push back buddy. Rachel "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":614.4,"endTime":620.52,"body":"and I have a very similar relationship where we  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":620.52,"endTime":627.28,"body":"will help each other reframe, like in a very "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":620.52,"endTime":627.28,"body":"supportive, like loving way, honestly, but I think  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":627.28,"endTime":631.04,"body":"that's important to have that balance of well, "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":627.28,"endTime":631.04,"body":"did you think about it this way? What  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":631.04,"endTime":638.56,"body":"about this perspective? And we need that to "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":631.04,"endTime":638.56,"body":"I think keep our our conversations interesting  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":638.56,"endTime":646.12,"body":"and addressing all the needs and seeing "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":638.56,"endTime":646.12,"body":"a different perspective. I agree with you. I think  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":646.12,"endTime":652.84,"body":"that's because we can't all think alike.  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":646.12,"endTime":652.84,"body":"We have people from I don't know if it's  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":652.84,"endTime":660.0,"body":"every state that is on our Advisory Council but "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":652.84,"endTime":660.0,"body":"we're across the country and so what people are  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":660.0,"endTime":665.96,"body":"seeing at different places is different and "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":660.0,"endTime":665.96,"body":"so I might say something from North Carolina  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":665.96,"endTime":671.04,"body":"and somebody in California says, well, that's not "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":665.96,"endTime":671.04,"body":"how we do things here. And so we have to think of  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":671.04,"endTime":677.52,"body":"it from a global perspective we can't think of "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":671.04,"endTime":677.52,"body":"it from what it is in my city or your city and  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":677.52,"endTime":685.64,"body":"so it takes all of us collectively to think about "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":677.52,"endTime":685.64,"body":"how can we solve these problems on a global scale."},{"speaker":"them","startTime":685.64,"endTime":691.68,"body":"And then when we talk international, my goodness, "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":685.64,"endTime":691.68,"body":"I mean some of the language issues, some of the  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":691.68,"endTime":699.16,"body":"terminology, some of the... there's a lot of "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":691.68,"endTime":699.16,"body":"barriers and for a while we had a discussion  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":699.16,"endTime":705.16,"body":"about maybe we pause our international folks "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":699.16,"endTime":705.16,"body":"and they just keep coming back and wanting to  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":705.16,"endTime":713.16,"body":"be a part of it. We had our symposium in September "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":705.16,"endTime":713.16,"body":"and we had folks on there from overseas that did  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":713.16,"endTime":720.08,"body":"amazing presentations about their work and they "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":713.16,"endTime":720.08,"body":"just want to be a part of it. One of our  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":720.08,"endTime":726.76,"body":"colleagues champion who's in South Africa I think "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":720.08,"endTime":726.76,"body":"it was wasn't it like 4:00 a.m. He was on  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":726.76,"endTime":735.04,"body":"the call all day, all our day, all his night just "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":726.76,"endTime":735.04,"body":"so he could be a part of this online symposium  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":735.04,"endTime":742.12,"body":"because he knows it's so important to "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":735.04,"endTime":742.12,"body":"his profession and his work. You know, in listening  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":742.12,"endTime":747.64,"body":"to this, to get a little metacognitive for a "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":742.12,"endTime":747.64,"body":"minute, it sounds like what I'm hearing is you  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":747.64,"endTime":752.96,"body":"all were modeling key facets of professional "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":747.64,"endTime":752.96,"body":"identity while you were trying to define it  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":752.96,"endTime":757.64,"body":"and articulate it which I think is really amazing. "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":752.96,"endTime":757.64,"body":"And I think this would be a great time for us  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":757.64,"endTime":763.36,"body":"to dig into really the operational definition of "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":757.64,"endTime":763.36,"body":"professional identity because when we have these  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":763.36,"endTime":768.92,"body":"big concepts that are hard to wrap our arms around "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":763.36,"endTime":768.92,"body":"I imagine lots of different people see it from  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":768.92,"endTime":773.88,"body":"different perspectives and see it differently and "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":768.92,"endTime":773.88,"body":"I would love to hear a little bit more about"},{"speaker":"them","startTime":773.88,"endTime":778.84,"body":"the conversation that happened around that table "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":773.88,"endTime":778.84,"body":"as you were forming this shared mental model and  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":778.84,"endTime":782.88,"body":"collective understanding of professional identity "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":778.84,"endTime":782.88,"body":"and where you are now with operationalizing  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":782.88,"endTime":791.28,"body":"that definition. So I'll take up the definition "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":782.88,"endTime":791.28,"body":"and explain that for us and then I'll talk about  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":791.28,"endTime":798.56,"body":"the four domains and then Beth is so good about "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":791.28,"endTime":798.56,"body":"explaining how all this fits together so we're  "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":798.56,"endTime":806.92,"body":"gonna let her do a lot of the talking, so there you "},{"speaker":"them","startTime":798.56,"endTime":806.92,"body":"are queued up Beth. The definition for professional  "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":806.92,"endTime":814.6,"body":"a sense of one's self and in "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":806.92,"endTime":814.6,"body":"relationship with others, that is influenced by the  "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":814.6,"endTime":821.44,"body":"characteristics, norms and values of the nursing "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":814.6,"endTime":821.44,"body":"discipline resulting in an individual thinking,  "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":821.44,"endTime":827.92,"body":"acting and feeling like a nurse. So I'm gonna get "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":821.44,"endTime":827.92,"body":"a little academic on you and talk about why this  "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":827.92,"endTime":834.0,"body":"is worded like it is, but there's a key phrase, "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":827.92,"endTime":834.0,"body":"\"thinking, acting and feeling like a nurse,\" and that  "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":834.0,"endTime":841.56,"body":"is important because that was developed by Robert "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":834.0,"endTime":841.56,"body":"Merton in 1967 in the first book written about the  "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":841.56,"endTime":849.2,"body":"sociology of medicine and he talked specifically "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":841.56,"endTime":849.2,"body":"about professional identity being that which  "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":849.2,"endTime":855.24,"body":"results in the individual thinking, acting and "},{"speaker":"identity in nursing is","startTime":849.2,"endTime":855.24,"body":"feeling like a nurse. Thirdly, nurse as leader.
