So one of the things that  "},{"startTime":119.04,"endTime":126.6,"body":"I think we all have to look at when I wrote the "},{"startTime":119.04,"endTime":126.6,"body":"editorial is the context of big data and I don't  "},{"startTime":126.6,"endTime":134.8,"body":"think we can lose sight of the fact that big "},{"startTime":126.6,"endTime":134.8,"body":"data is millions of data points and most nurse  "},{"startTime":134.8,"endTime":143.4,"body":"data doesn't collect in that manner. We don't "},{"startTime":134.8,"endTime":143.4,"body":"usually have large data sets, but my concern comes  "},{"startTime":143.4,"endTime":151.04,"body":"in that the data sets that we do have we're not "},{"startTime":143.4,"endTime":151.04,"body":"investigating. We're not looking at them for evidence.  "},{"startTime":151.04,"endTime":157.2,"body":"We're not looking at them for directing our new "},{"startTime":151.04,"endTime":157.2,"body":"opportunities in the future. We don't look at them  "},{"startTime":157.2,"endTime":165.08,"body":"in the way that we should be looking to advance "},{"startTime":157.2,"endTime":165.08,"body":"our discipline and our profession. We have enormous  "},{"startTime":165.08,"endTime":171.68,"body":"data from State Boards of Nursing that we have "},{"startTime":165.08,"endTime":171.68,"body":"access to and there are other data points that  "},{"startTime":171.68,"endTime":179.0,"body":"are proprietary in nature and those proprietary "},{"startTime":171.68,"endTime":179.0,"body":"ones we have to work with their organizations  "},{"startTime":179.0,"endTime":185.28,"body":"because they feel that they are unique to their "},{"startTime":179.0,"endTime":185.28,"body":"organization and that they are the core of their  "},{"startTime":185.28,"endTime":190.84,"body":"business and what we have to make people "},{"startTime":185.28,"endTime":190.84,"body":"understand and organizations understand is  "},{"startTime":190.84,"endTime":198.32,"body":"that we need that data in order to define our "},{"startTime":190.84,"endTime":198.32,"body":"future opportunities. I look at, quite  "},{"startTime":198.32,"endTime":205.96,"body":"often when I'm evaluating and having been a chief "},{"startTime":198.32,"endTime":205.96,"body":"nurse executive, having been in business operations  "},{"startTime":205.96,"endTime":215.32,"body":"and now in academe, I look at that old triage of "},{"startTime":205.96,"endTime":215.32,"body":"data in a way that some people don't and that  "},{"startTime":215.32,"endTime":222.84,"body":"is because we look at shortages in the hospital "},{"startTime":215.32,"endTime":222.84,"body":"and yet, when I wrote my editorial there were two  "},{"startTime":222.84,"endTime":232.64,"body":"references that over 56% of nurses turnover within "},{"startTime":222.84,"endTime":232.64,"body":"three years, much less a year. And when you look at  "},{"startTime":232.64,"endTime":240.48,"body":"that height of turnover, you really need to look at "},{"startTime":232.64,"endTime":240.48,"body":"demand and supply equations. What are we admitting  "},{"startTime":240.48,"endTime":248.12,"body":"to the schools that people are not able to be "},{"startTime":240.48,"endTime":248.12,"body":"able to understand the environment that they're  "},{"startTime":248.12,"endTime":256.48,"body":"going to to practice? We can blame a "},{"startTime":248.12,"endTime":256.48,"body":"lot on operations and hospitals and those  "},{"startTime":256.48,"endTime":264.32,"body":"types of things, but we as academicians have to "},{"startTime":256.48,"endTime":264.32,"body":"look at what are the students that we let in? Do  "},{"startTime":264.32,"endTime":271.56,"body":"they understand what it is or are we just letting "},{"startTime":264.32,"endTime":271.56,"body":"them in for revenue production? It's very easy  "},{"startTime":271.56,"endTime":278.32,"body":"to create revenue production when you have open "},{"startTime":271.56,"endTime":278.32,"body":"access to schools. You let in anybody that has the  "},{"startTime":278.32,"endTime":286.16,"body":"grades that they think are okay because grades are "},{"startTime":278.32,"endTime":286.16,"body":"inflated today compared to when I was in school  "},{"startTime":286.16,"endTime":292.2,"body":"and it's very apparent that these students do not "},{"startTime":286.16,"endTime":292.2,"body":"have the understanding of what they're going to  "},{"startTime":292.2,"endTime":298.0,"body":"be moving to and it's really key."},{"startTime":292.2,"endTime":298.0,"body":"Yeah you make a "},{"startTime":298.0,"endTime":304.92,"body":"but not in the way you just described.  "},{"startTime":298.0,"endTime":304.92,"body":"Usually, we obviously are attracted to students who  "},{"startTime":304.92,"endTime":312.4,"body":"have an interest in providing care and understand "},{"startTime":304.92,"endTime":312.4,"body":"some aspect of health, but how how do we prepare  "},{"startTime":312.4,"endTime":317.68,"body":"them for what they are going to see or how they're "},{"startTime":312.4,"endTime":317.68,"body":"going to, I guess, not see necessarily but what are  "},{"startTime":317.68,"endTime":322.6,"body":"the realities of the system in which they're going "},{"startTime":317.68,"endTime":322.6,"body":"to operate in once they leave the the the confines  "},{"startTime":322.6,"endTime":328.48,"body":"of the campus, right? So they get a taste of that "},{"startTime":322.6,"endTime":328.48,"body":"when they're in their clinical settings, but  "},{"startTime":328.48,"endTime":334.12,"body":"they don't have a full immersion into that,"},{"startTime":328.48,"endTime":334.12,"body":"the political, the environment of the  "},{"startTime":334.12,"endTime":339.28,"body":"facility or agency they're going to be at until "},{"startTime":334.12,"endTime":339.28,"body":"that first six months or year. What is it that  "},{"startTime":339.28,"endTime":347.12,"body":"we could actually do in reference to big data to "},{"startTime":339.28,"endTime":347.12,"body":"help prepare students better for that experience?  "},{"startTime":347.12,"endTime":353.8,"body":"I think we have to mind that data. I think we "},{"startTime":347.12,"endTime":353.8,"body":"have to mine the data on entry of students. I  "},{"startTime":353.8,"endTime":361.12,"body":"mean, every school I know takes data points about "},{"startTime":353.8,"endTime":361.12,"body":"students over their career opportunities in their  "},{"startTime":361.12,"endTime":367.04,"body":"four-year programs and their two-year programs "},{"startTime":361.12,"endTime":367.04,"body":"and even in some diploma schools. They all take  "},{"startTime":367.04,"endTime":374.56,"body":"data and we need to start mining that data to see "},{"startTime":367.04,"endTime":374.56,"body":"what correlations there are, what statistical  "},{"startTime":374.56,"endTime":381.92,"body":"alignments there are, and evaluate what we need to "},{"startTime":374.56,"endTime":381.92,"body":"let into a school. And I say that \"let in\" just like  "},{"startTime":381.92,"endTime":388.96,"body":"med schools let in. They don't open the door to "},{"startTime":381.92,"endTime":388.96,"body":"everyone. They don't open with open access. They  "},{"startTime":388.96,"endTime":396.52,"body":"don't open open with limited access. They say "},{"startTime":388.96,"endTime":396.52,"body":"you have to have these criteria in order to be  "},{"startTime":396.52,"endTime":403.8,"body":"into the med school. Now, granted, they are a post-"},{"startTime":396.52,"endTime":403.8,"body":"baccalaureate degree program, but at the same time,  "},{"startTime":403.8,"endTime":412.92,"body":"look at other universities that focus in on "},{"startTime":403.8,"endTime":412.92,"body":"other opportunities and that increases diversity  "},{"startTime":412.92,"endTime":419.84,"body":"at the same time because then you know what "},{"startTime":412.92,"endTime":419.84,"body":"people have the ability in order to create those  "},{"startTime":419.84,"endTime":427.16,"body":"opportunities to move forward in the data because "},{"startTime":419.84,"endTime":427.16,"body":"state boards already know who can pass, who can't  "},{"startTime":427.16,"endTime":433.56,"body":"pass, what they lack, what they don't lack, and how "},{"startTime":427.16,"endTime":433.56,"body":"do they publish that data. How does the National  "},{"startTime":433.56,"endTime":439.56,"body":"Council of State Boards publish that data? Clearly "},{"startTime":433.56,"endTime":439.56,"body":"they have revenue production. I've looked at their  "},{"startTime":439.56,"endTime":446.2,"body":"their 1090 forms. They have enormous amounts of "},{"startTime":439.56,"endTime":446.2,"body":"holdings of assets. They need to spend that money,  "},{"startTime":446.2,"endTime":453.958,"body":"they are a not for-profit organization, on mining that data."},{"startTime":446.2,"endTime":453.958,"body":"We don't have that data do we? We can't access that data."},{"startTime":453.958,"endTime":458.96,"body":"No, no we don't and they need to "},{"startTime":453.958,"endTime":458.96,"body":"do it because they are not for-profit organization  "},{"startTime":458.96,"endTime":467.0,"body":"they claim 501c3 status and therefore they are "},{"startTime":458.96,"endTime":467.0,"body":"required by law to use their money to advance  "},{"startTime":467.0,"endTime":473.24,"body":"the causes of their data points and they're "},{"startTime":467.0,"endTime":473.24,"body":"not doing it, not anybody is doing it and we  "},{"startTime":473.24,"endTime":479.84,"body":"don't even have a minimum data set in nursing "},{"startTime":473.24,"endTime":479.84,"body":"education. We have one in nursing management. We  "},{"startTime":479.84,"endTime":487.64,"body":"have one in nursing practice, but we need one in "},{"startTime":479.84,"endTime":487.64,"body":"nursing education not only for students but for  "},{"startTime":487.64,"endTime":495.4,"body":"faculty. I mean, I am constantly amazed when "},{"startTime":487.64,"endTime":495.4,"body":"faculty have difficulties and they concurrently  "},{"startTime":495.4,"endTime":502.44,"body":"have difficulties and we're not able to coach them "},{"startTime":495.4,"endTime":502.44,"body":"through our data to what they need to do to have  "},{"startTime":502.44,"endTime":508.48,"body":"better engagement with their students. And "},{"startTime":502.44,"endTime":508.48,"body":"some of the harder courses, let's be upfront - there  "},{"startTime":508.48,"endTime":516.0,"body":"are harder courses in nursing than there are other "},{"startTime":508.48,"endTime":516.0,"body":"courses in nursing, and those professors have the  "},{"startTime":516.0,"endTime":523.84,"body":"heavy workload, the heavy lift and they get the "},{"startTime":516.0,"endTime":523.84,"body":"poorest evaluations when in reality they are the  "},{"startTime":523.84,"endTime":529.48,"body":"ones that hold the key to advancing our cause "},{"startTime":523.84,"endTime":529.48,"body":"as professional nurses because if you're not  "},{"startTime":529.48,"endTime":536.68,"body":"academically prepared, you get lost when you get "},{"startTime":529.48,"endTime":536.68,"body":"into practice. You're completely lost in practice.  "},{"startTime":536.68,"endTime":541.166,"body":"What about resources? What are the resources you "},{"startTime":536.68,"endTime":541.166,"body":"suggest that would be needed for this?  "},{"startTime":541.166,"endTime":553.024,"body":"That's a great question about resources because we do "},{"startTime":541.166,"endTime":553.024,"body":"have limited people in nursing that have PhDs and academic preparation."},{"startTime":553.024,"endTime":557.08,"body":"And we're not producing a lot more of them, that's for sure."},{"startTime":553.024,"endTime":557.08,"body":"No, and so we have to  "},{"startTime":557.08,"endTime":565.96,"body":"capitalize on looking at people who do have AI/ML experience and knowledge and work with them  "},{"startTime":565.96,"endTime":571.24,"body":"on what's nursing data. I think that's the "},{"startTime":565.96,"endTime":571.24,"body":"other thing when you look at schools of nursing  "},{"startTime":571.24,"endTime":578.84,"body":"that begins our core of nursing data. And we need "},{"startTime":571.24,"endTime":578.84,"body":"to distinguish our data from that of allopathic, which  "},{"startTime":578.84,"endTime":584.36,"body":"is medical practice. Now, the government's going "},{"startTime":578.84,"endTime":584.36,"body":"to call us medicine forever. They're not going  "},{"startTime":584.36,"endTime":592.12,"body":"to separate allopathic, chiropractic, nursing practice, "},{"startTime":584.36,"endTime":592.12,"body":"psychiatric practice, they're not going to separate  "},{"startTime":592.12,"endTime":598.52,"body":"all those. What they're going to separate is up "},{"startTime":592.12,"endTime":598.52,"body":"to us and we have to find those data points that  "},{"startTime":598.52,"endTime":604.56,"body":"make it unique to our contribution because I "},{"startTime":598.52,"endTime":604.56,"body":"am here to tell you if we don't we will be a  "},{"startTime":604.56,"endTime":610.96,"body":"generic health care worker. And I can look at "},{"startTime":604.56,"endTime":610.96,"body":"it from my basic diploma education at Grady  "},{"startTime":610.96,"endTime":619.04,"body":"in the 60s. We all had physical therapy, we had "},{"startTime":610.96,"endTime":619.04,"body":"nutrition...no one said we couldn't  "},{"startTime":619.04,"endTime":626.12,"body":"do those things and all of a sudden they tell us "},{"startTime":619.04,"endTime":626.12,"body":"we can't do this in PT anymore. And you're like,  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":626.12,"endTime":633.12,"body":"00 in the afternoon and I'm "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":626.12,"endTime":633.12,"body":"responsible. I think I can do it. And we really need  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":633.12,"endTime":641.48,"body":"to recognize we have a larger scope than we"},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":633.12,"endTime":641.48,"body":"are practicing in and that's a scope that we  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":641.48,"endTime":648.254,"body":"can push, we can legally push it and we can with "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":641.48,"endTime":648.254,"body":"data and evidence push those boundaries.  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":648.254,"endTime":654.885,"body":"So what's the next steps? You highlight some really"},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":648.254,"endTime":654.885,"body":"great points there. So what is the next steps,"},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":654.885,"endTime":662.12,"body":"I think we gain with our PhD colleagues who are non- nurses  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":662.12,"endTime":668.6,"body":"The other thing I think we have to recognize is  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":668.6,"endTime":676.68,"body":"that people who are in DNP education and after "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":668.6,"endTime":676.68,"body":"they've been in practice and they are looking at  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":676.68,"endTime":683.24,"body":"doing jobs that are not as physically demanding "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":676.68,"endTime":683.24,"body":"but mentally challenging, they are great people  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":683.24,"endTime":691.0,"body":"to work with software. They can work with software. "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":683.24,"endTime":691.0,"body":"You can teach them a program and they can run your  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":691.0,"endTime":698.76,"body":"data. I run data for my colleagues all the time "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":691.0,"endTime":698.76,"body":"because I've always been involved in databases  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":698.76,"endTime":705.28,"body":"and so once you get into databases you kind of "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":698.76,"endTime":705.28,"body":"can run databases for people in science and so  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":705.28,"endTime":711.08,"body":"that's one thing we have to do is we have to look "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":705.28,"endTime":711.08,"body":"to anyone who has those skills and knowledge and  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":711.08,"endTime":717.72,"body":"wants to work in that domain to be able to push "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":711.08,"endTime":717.72,"body":"that knowledge forward. That's the first thing. The  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":717.72,"endTime":725.76,"body":"second thing is that we have to start pushing "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":717.72,"endTime":725.76,"body":"on professional organizations and on ourself to  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":725.76,"endTime":734.92,"body":"look at what and where is our nursing data. "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":725.76,"endTime":734.92,"body":"And third, I think collectively NLN should drive  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":734.92,"endTime":741.32,"body":"the components to develop a nursing minimum data "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":734.92,"endTime":741.32,"body":"set. And you know it's interesting. We talk about  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":741.32,"endTime":748.48,"body":"others not releasing proprietary knowledge. We could "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":741.32,"endTime":748.48,"body":"brand that as the NLN nursing minimum data set  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":748.48,"endTime":756.88,"body":"in education for students and for faculty and "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":748.48,"endTime":756.88,"body":"for pedagogy and environmental practices that we  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":756.88,"endTime":764.92,"body":"all have and we could say that's it, push it out "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":756.88,"endTime":764.92,"body":"and people would start collecting that data and  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":764.92,"endTime":773.028,"body":"now when you collect that data you can just send that data"},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":764.92,"endTime":773.028,"body":"to a holding company like NLN and they  can run it for you."},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":773.028,"endTime":779.2,"body":"Have you proposed that to NLN?"},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":773.028,"endTime":779.2,"body":"I've talked to Dr. Malone before about it. Actually  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":779.2,"endTime":786.4,"body":"talked to her at an NLN meeting because NLN has a "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":779.2,"endTime":786.4,"body":"little bit of funding every now and then that we  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":786.4,"endTime":794.0,"body":"can get, NSF has funding and those are areas that "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":786.4,"endTime":794.0,"body":"we have to look at for our funding that are NIH.  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":794.0,"endTime":802.765,"body":"NINR is not going to focus on big data, whereas all the"},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":794.0,"endTime":802.765,"body":"others are. I can tell you, my funding through NSF and"},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":802.765,"endTime":809.56,"body":"private foundations etc. They look to nursing for data."},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":802.765,"endTime":809.56,"body":"Oh that's great."},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":809.56,"endTime":821.08,"body":"So to summarize your position from your editorial, "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":809.56,"endTime":821.08,"body":"big data is there, we need to be able to access it, "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":821.08,"endTime":826.68,"body":"interpret it, and then do something with it to move "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":821.08,"endTime":826.68,"body":"the profession forward both in education and in  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":826.68,"endTime":833.52,"body":"industry. And if not, someone else is going to do it "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":826.68,"endTime":833.52,"body":"and get their hands on it and we're going to lose  "},{"speaker":"really? You close at 5","startTime":869.8,"endTime":879.24,"body":"skills, right, the whole dynamics of the continuum  "},{"speaker":"really?
