I'm ready for a really  "},{"startTime":86.28,"endTime":92.68,"body":"spirited discussion about this topic so let's lead "},{"startTime":86.28,"endTime":92.68,"body":"us off by talking about a brief overview of your  "},{"startTime":92.68,"endTime":99.76,"body":"study purpose and the findings. Sure. The purpose of "},{"startTime":92.68,"endTime":99.76,"body":"the study was really to provide some insight into  "},{"startTime":99.76,"endTime":106.16,"body":"current issues and trends that are impacting the "},{"startTime":99.76,"endTime":106.16,"body":"shortage of academic nurse educators. Specifically,  "},{"startTime":106.16,"endTime":111.92,"body":"we're looking at the United States. But also we "},{"startTime":106.16,"endTime":111.92,"body":"wanted to provide some solutions for educational  "},{"startTime":111.92,"endTime":118.28,"body":"institutions and really look at an action plan "},{"startTime":111.92,"endTime":118.28,"body":"that they could put in place to help address these  "},{"startTime":118.28,"endTime":125.4,"body":"concerns. And like said, we use the nominal group "},{"startTime":118.28,"endTime":125.4,"body":"technique, which some may not be as familiar with,  "},{"startTime":125.4,"endTime":132.6,"body":"and that's looking at focus groups and then coming "},{"startTime":125.4,"endTime":132.6,"body":"up with consensus through research discussions.  "},{"startTime":132.6,"endTime":141.12,"body":"We used Zoom just like this to allow academic "},{"startTime":132.6,"endTime":141.12,"body":"educators from around the country to participate.  "},{"startTime":141.88,"endTime":149.32,"body":"Some of our findings include probably one of the "},{"startTime":141.88,"endTime":149.32,"body":"most heated topics right now in nurse education,  "},{"startTime":149.32,"endTime":156.6,"body":"the need for certified academic nurse educators "},{"startTime":149.32,"endTime":156.6,"body":"to be recognized as advanced practice nurses. The  "},{"startTime":156.6,"endTime":165.36,"body":"NLN has recognized nurse educators as an advanced "},{"startTime":156.6,"endTime":165.36,"body":"practice, role but you know wide stream that's not  "},{"startTime":165.36,"endTime":173.92,"body":"necessarily a common practice. So that was one of "},{"startTime":165.36,"endTime":173.92,"body":"the things that our participants found.   "},{"startTime":173.92,"endTime":182.24,"body":"We have core competencies, we have certification "},{"startTime":173.92,"endTime":182.24,"body":"examinations, and we have a broad knowledge base  "},{"startTime":182.24,"endTime":190.48,"body":"so nurse educators need to be recognized. Also the "},{"startTime":182.24,"endTime":190.48,"body":"earnings, benefits, and workloads are not comparable  "},{"startTime":190.48,"endTime":198.32,"body":"to nurses in clinical practice. There is a significant"},{"startTime":190.48,"endTime":198.32,"body":"salary gap. Another finding that leads  "},{"startTime":198.32,"endTime":207.24,"body":"to the issue of retention is that of orientation "},{"startTime":198.32,"endTime":207.24,"body":"and mentorship of our new faculty. The study also  "},{"startTime":207.24,"endTime":214.52,"body":"found the awareness of the need for funding for "},{"startTime":207.24,"endTime":214.52,"body":"those who want to become academic nurse educators.  "},{"startTime":214.52,"endTime":220.16,"body":"Participants in this study noted that many recent "},{"startTime":214.52,"endTime":220.16,"body":"hires have no formal education or training in  "},{"startTime":220.16,"endTime":227.64,"body":"pedagogy. That could be very problematic when "},{"startTime":220.16,"endTime":227.64,"body":"curriculum, assessment, and evaluation matters are  "},{"startTime":227.64,"endTime":237.64,"body":"being discussed. They feel somewhat out of place. "},{"startTime":227.64,"endTime":237.64,"body":"That can lead to a lack of confidence. So we need  "},{"startTime":237.64,"endTime":245.12,"body":"some way to help them become better educated as "},{"startTime":237.64,"endTime":245.12,"body":"educators. I'll talk a little bit more about  "},{"startTime":245.12,"endTime":253.0,"body":"that when we look at the actual retention of our "},{"startTime":245.12,"endTime":253.0,"body":"educators. Another finding involves recruitment of  "},{"startTime":253.0,"endTime":260.8,"body":"future educators. We as educators ourselves can be "},{"startTime":253.0,"endTime":260.8,"body":"the best recruiters. We can identify those students  "},{"startTime":260.8,"endTime":269.32,"body":"who would make great academic nurse educators. As "},{"startTime":260.8,"endTime":269.32,"body":"an educator, I work alongside lots of my former  "},{"startTime":269.32,"endTime":277.92,"body":"students. I'm very honored to work alongside those "},{"startTime":269.32,"endTime":277.92,"body":"great educators. Many participants also noted the  "},{"startTime":277.92,"endTime":284.92,"body":"fact that when you look at job applications you "},{"startTime":277.92,"endTime":284.92,"body":"only see PhD or DNP as preferred qualifications. We  "},{"startTime":284.92,"endTime":291.12,"body":"know that there are many other avenues that make "},{"startTime":284.92,"endTime":291.12,"body":"great nurse educators but they're not listed on  "},{"startTime":291.12,"endTime":299.96,"body":"those applications. We need to highlight some "},{"startTime":291.12,"endTime":299.96,"body":"of those other competencies. Not every  "},{"startTime":299.96,"endTime":305.16,"body":"must have a doctorate. We need to look "},{"startTime":299.96,"endTime":305.16,"body":"more at those NLN core competencies for"},{"startTime":305.16,"endTime":312.96,"body":"qualifications. Well as you know, we have been "},{"startTime":305.16,"endTime":312.96,"body":"talking for years about salaries for nurse  "},{"startTime":312.96,"endTime":319.04,"body":"educators and advanced practice recognition. "},{"startTime":312.96,"endTime":319.04,"body":"Where are we at with this? Are we making any  "},{"startTime":319.04,"endTime":324.84,"body":"progress? What needs to happen at the professional "},{"startTime":319.04,"endTime":324.84,"body":"organizational level to make this become a reality?  "},{"startTime":324.84,"endTime":329.64,"body":"What are the barriers? Sure. Let me start with "},{"startTime":324.84,"endTime":329.64,"body":"the first part of that question: where are we now.  "},{"startTime":331.24,"endTime":337.88,"body":"So let's look at some of the latest statistics "},{"startTime":331.24,"endTime":337.88,"body":"which would be 2023. So according to the US  "},{"startTime":337.88,"endTime":346.997,"body":"Bureau of Labor Statistics, the annual mean salary"},{"startTime":337.88,"endTime":346.997,"body":"for all post-secondary educators was $101,750."},{"startTime":346.997,"endTime":357.254,"body":"So that's everybody teaching postsecondary. For business educators, that mean was $113,240."},{"startTime":357.254,"endTime":362.956,"body":"For those teaching biology, it was $102,270."},{"startTime":362.956,"endTime":371.12,"body":"For art, drama, and music educators it was"},{"startTime":362.956,"endTime":371.12,"body":"$100,840. But for nursing educators it was"},{"startTime":371.12,"endTime":381.135,"body":"$86,530 and that's 2023 data. So that's where we are currently."},{"startTime":381.135,"endTime":389.86,"body":"Where did we come from? So let's look pre-Covid,"},{"startTime":381.135,"endTime":389.86,"body":"so 2018. The mean salary 2018 was"},{"startTime":389.86,"endTime":396.444,"body":"$85,190. So there is a difference"},{"startTime":389.86,"endTime":396.444,"body":"in that mean overall."},{"startTime":396.444,"endTime":408.839,"body":"For business educators back in 2018, their mean"},{"startTime":396.444,"endTime":408.839,"body":"was $103,330, so they have increased 9.2%."},{"startTime":408.839,"endTime":419.6,"body":"Biology - it was $97,340. They've increased 4.9%."},{"startTime":408.839,"endTime":419.6,"body":"Art, drama and music - theirs was"},{"startTime":419.6,"endTime":429.927,"body":"$82,560. They have increased 19.9% since 2018."},{"startTime":429.927,"endTime":439.395,"body":"For nursing educators - it was $81,350. We have increased 6.2% since 2018. So that's  "},{"startTime":439.395,"endTime":449.17,"body":"where we currently are. We have increased, but only "},{"startTime":439.395,"endTime":449.17,"body":"6.2%. Look at inflation since Covid. So..."},{"startTime":449.17,"endTime":454.82,"body":"So why are we so undervalued?"},{"startTime":449.17,"endTime":454.82,"body":"That's a very good question."},{"startTime":454.82,"endTime":459.976,"body":"That's where we need our professional organizations, but professional organizations can only"},{"startTime":459.976,"endTime":463.953,"body":"help so much. We have to advocate for ourselves."},{"startTime":459.976,"endTime":463.953,"body":"Right."},{"startTime":463.953,"endTime":472.706,"body":"We need to team together. We're only as"},{"startTime":463.953,"endTime":472.706,"body":"good as our weakest link."},{"startTime":472.706,"endTime":480.48,"body":"So we're making some progress maybe marginally"},{"startTime":472.706,"endTime":480.48,"body":"on the salary front. Are we making any progress on  "},{"startTime":480.48,"endTime":487.8,"body":"pushing for advanced practice recognition? "},{"startTime":480.48,"endTime":487.8,"body":"Well, we need to bring awareness to the role of  "},{"startTime":487.8,"endTime":495.36,"body":"academic nurse educators. We need to advocate for "},{"startTime":487.8,"endTime":495.36,"body":"the role and we need to emphasize the need for  "},{"startTime":495.36,"endTime":502.16,"body":"nurse educators become certified. When you look at "},{"startTime":495.36,"endTime":502.16,"body":"other advanced practice specialties they all have  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":502.16,"endTime":509.64,"body":"they're certified. We have "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":502.16,"endTime":509.64,"body":"so many nurse educators that are not certified.  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":509.64,"endTime":516.88,"body":"How can we make that argument if we don't seek "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":509.64,"endTime":516.88,"body":"the certification? So that's one thing that we  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":516.88,"endTime":524.44,"body":"need to push for that will help to validate the "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":516.88,"endTime":524.44,"body":"expertise of the academic nurse educator. Yeah.  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":524.44,"endTime":530.0,"body":"It'll help validate the expertise but it doesn't "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":524.44,"endTime":530.0,"body":"come with any additional salary, at least in my  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":530.0,"endTime":536.12,"body":"experience and in talking to colleagues right, "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":530.0,"endTime":536.12,"body":"there's a recognition but there's not a  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":536.12,"endTime":542.16,"body":"financial recognition of that expertise. And "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":536.12,"endTime":542.16,"body":"if you look in our article we talk about  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":542.16,"endTime":549.0,"body":"the certification being part of tenure and promotion "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":542.16,"endTime":549.0,"body":"and that would be an incentive for these academic  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":549.0,"endTime":554.48,"body":"nurse educators to become certified because it "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":549.0,"endTime":554.48,"body":"would be recognized along those tenure promotion  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":554.48,"endTime":559.48,"body":"guidelines. Because many times they recognize "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":554.48,"endTime":559.48,"body":"the certification of say, your nurse practitioner  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":559.48,"endTime":564.88,"body":"faculty, that's part of the criteria. They grant credit"},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":559.48,"endTime":564.88,"body":"for that, which would help you  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":564.88,"endTime":572.88,"body":"financially. For instance, most institutions "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":564.88,"endTime":572.88,"body":"give a raise for promotion. The NLN, the National  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":572.88,"endTime":580.24,"body":"League for Nursing, has done a wonderful job in"},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":572.88,"endTime":580.24,"body":"providing support and recognition for  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":580.24,"endTime":589.4,"body":"nurse educators. Obviously they have the Certified "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":580.24,"endTime":589.4,"body":"Nurse Educator certification, as a clinician, as a  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":589.4,"endTime":594.88,"body":"faculty member. They have the fellowship now, the "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":589.4,"endTime":594.88,"body":"Academy of Nursing Education that recognizes  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":594.88,"endTime":599.8,"body":"outstanding contributions to nursing education. "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":594.88,"endTime":599.8,"body":"The organization is very of course  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":599.8,"endTime":607.76,"body":"pro-nursing education and is the source of "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":599.8,"endTime":607.76,"body":"nursing education resources and support.  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":607.76,"endTime":616.04,"body":"What can the organization do, do you "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":607.76,"endTime":616.04,"body":"think from the aspect of generating  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":616.96,"endTime":625.96,"body":"calls to action, policy endorsement, etc., to help "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":616.96,"endTime":625.96,"body":"solidify or move forward this advanced practice  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":625.96,"endTime":631.84,"body":"role recognition? I'm sure sure there's been "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":625.96,"endTime":631.84,"body":"some and I don't know but sure there's been  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":631.84,"endTime":640.04,"body":"some attempt at that through the organization, "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":631.84,"endTime":640.04,"body":"but is there any coming together  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":640.04,"endTime":645.8,"body":"any group that really is pushing this agenda "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":640.04,"endTime":645.8,"body":"forward or taking it to where it needs to go to  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":645.8,"endTime":652.8,"body":"be listened to and to really understand what "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":645.8,"endTime":652.8,"body":"what we're asking for as advanced practice role  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":652.8,"endTime":660.72,"body":"recognition? All the authors of this article, "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":652.8,"endTime":660.72,"body":"we're all members of the National Consortium  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":660.72,"endTime":666.92,"body":"of Academic Nurse Educators. We came together as "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":660.72,"endTime":666.92,"body":"a group. That's how this project started and our  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":666.92,"endTime":674.32,"body":"membership is now up around a 100 members from all "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":666.92,"endTime":674.32,"body":"over the country. This is exactly what we're  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":674.32,"endTime":681.08,"body":"trying to do is advocate for, our role, "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":674.32,"endTime":681.08,"body":"and we are trying to disseminate our knowledge. We  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":681.08,"endTime":687.64,"body":"have multiple groups in addition to educational "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":681.08,"endTime":687.64,"body":"institutions. We have professional organizations,  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":687.64,"endTime":693.4,"body":"health care organizations, consumers, and policy "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":687.64,"endTime":693.4,"body":"makers. We've done nominal group techniques on  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":693.4,"endTime":701.04,"body":"all of those different groups so we have similar "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":693.4,"endTime":701.04,"body":"papers for all of these different groups. We also  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":701.04,"endTime":708.48,"body":"have a Delphi research project that's ongoing. We're "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":701.04,"endTime":708.48,"body":"in the analysis of that right now. So all of  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":708.48,"endTime":716.44,"body":"our action items were in the Delphi and they've "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":708.48,"endTime":716.44,"body":"gone out to academic nurse educators, different  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":716.44,"endTime":722.72,"body":"vested stakeholders throughout the country "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":716.44,"endTime":722.72,"body":"and our first round had nearly a thousand  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":722.72,"endTime":731.08,"body":"participants for a Delphi. So it was a very hot topic. "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":722.72,"endTime":731.08,"body":"Yeah, it's a very hot topic. And we thank all of our  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":731.08,"endTime":736.6,"body":"participants for that. Like I said, we are still "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":731.08,"endTime":736.6,"body":"going through the analysis so hopefully we'll  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":736.6,"endTime":743.52,"body":"have that published in the near future, but we want "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":736.6,"endTime":743.52,"body":"to take those action items and literally put them  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":743.52,"endTime":750.16,"body":"into action. Right. So those would be things -"},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":743.52,"endTime":750.16,"body":"writing letters to our congressmen and women,  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":750.16,"endTime":757.92,"body":"sending it out through different organizations. "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":750.16,"endTime":757.92,"body":"We've written proposals to ANA. We've  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":757.92,"endTime":763.48,"body":"been writing statements trying to get this to "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":757.92,"endTime":763.48,"body":"the forefront. We have different people in the  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":763.48,"endTime":769.72,"body":"organization that are standing up for their state "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":763.48,"endTime":769.72,"body":"nurses associations trying to get recognized.   "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":769.72,"endTime":776.16,"body":"It takes advocacy. We have to advocate for the "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":769.72,"endTime":776.16,"body":"role. Right. Well, we're told we're valued,  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":776.16,"endTime":782.04,"body":"we're told we're needed that we don't have enough "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":776.16,"endTime":782.04,"body":"educators, and that's what kind of sometimes slows  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":782.04,"endTime":788.92,"body":"the pipeline of new nurses and we may not "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":782.04,"endTime":788.92,"body":"have enough nurse educators that are educated to  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":788.92,"endTime":797.88,"body":"the level that we need for many of our schools,"},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":788.92,"endTime":797.88,"body":"but the things that would  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":797.88,"endTime":805.08,"body":"lead to that would be of course better salary, "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":797.88,"endTime":805.08,"body":"advanced practice recognition, a tenured pathway  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":805.08,"endTime":812.4,"body":"or some type of pathway for security. So the things "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":805.08,"endTime":812.4,"body":"that could be put in place to help recruit from  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":812.4,"endTime":822.4,"body":"practice, from other areas of academia, aren't, "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":812.4,"endTime":822.4,"body":"right? Right. We need those pathways,  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":822.4,"endTime":826.6,"body":"like I said, those people who have the confidence"},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":822.4,"endTime":826.6,"body":"to be educators, we need pathways for  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":826.6,"endTime":834.16,"body":"them to go back and seek post-master certificates "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":826.6,"endTime":834.16,"body":"or post-doctoral certificates, but there a cost  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":834.16,"endTime":841.36,"body":"for that we need tuition reimbursement from their "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":834.16,"endTime":841.36,"body":"educational institutions. That would be quite  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":841.36,"endTime":847.16,"body":"easy to help retain the faculty. Let them go back"},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":841.36,"endTime":847.16,"body":"to school and get that pedagogical  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":847.16,"endTime":855.52,"body":"training. Right. I mean, as you know, I would "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":847.16,"endTime":855.52,"body":"say a good percentage of our faculty come from  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":855.52,"endTime":862.44,"body":"the practice setting. And we need strong "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":855.52,"endTime":862.44,"body":"clinicians, we need those. We do. We do. And yet we expect  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":862.44,"endTime":869.32,"body":"them to be educators and come in and educate "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":862.44,"endTime":869.32,"body":"... to understand curriculum, understand curriculum  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":869.32,"endTime":875.04,"body":"evaluation, architecture of curriculum, assessment,"},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":869.32,"endTime":875.04,"body":"all those things we're expecting them  "},{"speaker":"that thing in common","startTime":875.04,"endTime":882.12,"body":"to understand, of course they don't.
