Elizabeth, you wrote this amazing  "},{"startTime":93.24,"endTime":100.2,"body":"scoping review along with some of your colleagues "},{"startTime":93.24,"endTime":100.2,"body":"on, \"A Scoping Review of Nurse Educator Competencies:  "},{"startTime":100.2,"endTime":106.56,"body":"Mind the Gap.\" That's what we're here today to "},{"startTime":100.2,"endTime":106.56,"body":"talk about and I just wanted to start with you  "},{"startTime":106.56,"endTime":109.8,"body":"know just a little bit of background and "},{"startTime":106.56,"endTime":109.8,"body":"letting our audience know a little bit about  "},{"startTime":109.8,"endTime":114.56,"body":"us and how we got into nursing education. So I'll "},{"startTime":109.8,"endTime":114.56,"body":"start with Jasline and if you could just let us  "},{"startTime":114.56,"endTime":120.32,"body":"know how did you get into nursing education and "},{"startTime":114.56,"endTime":120.32,"body":"how well did you feel prepared for that transition?"},{"startTime":120.32,"endTime":127.0,"body":"Thank you so much Kellie for hosting this podcast"},{"startTime":120.32,"endTime":127.0,"body":"and asking that excellent question.  "},{"startTime":127.0,"endTime":131.68,"body":"So I actually got into nursing education by "},{"startTime":127.0,"endTime":131.68,"body":"accident. I remember working a shift in the  "},{"startTime":131.68,"endTime":137.04,"body":"ped's ER at Children's National Medical Center and "},{"startTime":131.68,"endTime":137.04,"body":"I think there was an agency nurse working next to  "},{"startTime":137.04,"endTime":142.24,"body":"me that day and she was like, hey, why don't you try "},{"startTime":137.04,"endTime":142.24,"body":"clinical instructor over at the school? I was like,  "},{"startTime":142.24,"endTime":145.96,"body":"really? And I was young and motivated "},{"startTime":142.24,"endTime":145.96,"body":"trying all kinds of different things and I said,  "},{"startTime":145.96,"endTime":151.88,"body":"sure, sounds cool. So within a week I got hired "},{"startTime":145.96,"endTime":151.88,"body":"to be a clinical instructor for a peds unit at  "},{"startTime":151.88,"endTime":158.52,"body":"a local community hospital. Mind you, I had only "},{"startTime":151.88,"endTime":158.52,"body":"been at Children's in the peds wing for about six  "},{"startTime":158.52,"endTime":165.16,"body":"months so not an expert in that area as well my "},{"startTime":158.52,"endTime":165.16,"body":"orientation to the clinical unit consisted about  "},{"startTime":165.16,"endTime":172.36,"body":"an hour talking with a nurse who was on the unit "},{"startTime":165.16,"endTime":172.36,"body":"and I started my first clinical instructor day at  "},{"startTime":172.36,"endTime":180.2,"body":"7 o'clock and had a group of eight students. "},{"startTime":172.36,"endTime":180.2,"body":"Fortunately I had a passion for it but  "},{"startTime":180.2,"endTime":185.28,"body":"I definitely had a lot of blunders I"},{"startTime":180.2,"endTime":185.28,"body":"reflect on it now and I'm like, oh my goodness  "},{"startTime":185.28,"endTime":192.0,"body":"and that led me to kind of really start "},{"startTime":185.28,"endTime":192.0,"body":"thinking about education. I went on and got my  "},{"startTime":192.0,"endTime":197.44,"body":"master's at University of Maryland. They had a "},{"startTime":192.0,"endTime":197.44,"body":"track that was focused on education so I did have  "},{"startTime":197.44,"endTime":202.76,"body":"some formal education where I was prepped on how "},{"startTime":197.44,"endTime":202.76,"body":"to present PowerPoints and delivery  "},{"startTime":202.76,"endTime":209.0,"body":"and things of that nature and then transition to "},{"startTime":202.76,"endTime":209.0,"body":"a full-time faculty position at a small   "},{"startTime":209.0,"endTime":215.92,"body":"private institution in Maryland that did not "},{"startTime":209.0,"endTime":215.92,"body":"have a formalized training for novice educators,  "},{"startTime":215.92,"endTime":221.64,"body":"did not have any type of orientation program, it "},{"startTime":215.92,"endTime":221.64,"body":"just couldn't support it I think and really  "},{"startTime":221.64,"endTime":226.0,"body":"found it to be challenging and I think I got "},{"startTime":221.64,"endTime":226.0,"body":"through it because I had some good colleagues  "},{"startTime":226.0,"endTime":232.36,"body":"who were experienced and who kind of informally "},{"startTime":226.0,"endTime":232.36,"body":"answered questions and just you it helped me along  "},{"startTime":232.36,"endTime":238.32,"body":"the way and I had a passion for it. I really found "},{"startTime":232.36,"endTime":238.32,"body":"my niche later on I moved to a larger community  "},{"startTime":238.32,"endTime":242.48,"body":"college, Montgomery College, and they had a "},{"startTime":238.32,"endTime":242.48,"body":"formalized program and I learned things  "},{"startTime":242.48,"endTime":247.44,"body":"three years after being a full-time faculty that "},{"startTime":242.48,"endTime":247.44,"body":"I had never learned -  item analysis,   "},{"startTime":247.44,"endTime":254.16,"body":"exam reviews as a team and then I had "},{"startTime":247.44,"endTime":254.16,"body":"an opportunity and really was supported through  "},{"startTime":254.16,"endTime":259.36,"body":"professional development. Recently I did the NLN "},{"startTime":254.16,"endTime":259.36,"body":"Sim Lead. I've done lots of professional  "},{"startTime":259.36,"endTime":264.92,"body":"development on my own and that has really "},{"startTime":259.36,"endTime":264.92,"body":"helped my career and really helped me sustain  "},{"startTime":264.92,"endTime":273.08,"body":"as a faculty member. So that's my long journey like two minutes."},{"startTime":264.92,"endTime":273.08,"body":"And you know what, your journey sounds  "},{"startTime":273.08,"endTime":277.48,"body":"like a lot of other nurse educators journeys. I "},{"startTime":273.08,"endTime":277.48,"body":"think a lot of us went straight from clinical  "},{"startTime":277.48,"endTime":281.96,"body":"practice whether it was working as a nurse or a "},{"startTime":277.48,"endTime":281.96,"body":"nurse practitioner. Similar journey - I was a nurse  "},{"startTime":281.96,"endTime":287.88,"body":"practitioner and I got a call that they were in need"},{"startTime":281.96,"endTime":287.88,"body":"of clinical instructors and that was  "},{"startTime":287.88,"endTime":292.68,"body":"my segue into nursing education and "},{"startTime":287.88,"endTime":292.68,"body":"I did that for one semester and the next thing  "},{"startTime":292.68,"endTime":299.24,"body":"you know there was a full-time nursing assistant "},{"startTime":292.68,"endTime":299.24,"body":"professor position and I went for it. So it was  "},{"startTime":299.24,"endTime":304.24,"body":"like semester of being a clinical faculty and then "},{"startTime":299.24,"endTime":304.24,"body":"next thing you know was full-time professor and  "},{"startTime":304.24,"endTime":309.88,"body":"like you, said being a nurse practitioner does not "},{"startTime":304.24,"endTime":309.88,"body":"prepare you for being a nurse educator.   "},{"startTime":309.88,"endTime":314.88,"body":"I'll never forget writing my first test."},{"startTime":309.88,"endTime":314.88,"body":"I thought it was brilliant. Luckily, I had a mentor  "},{"startTime":314.88,"endTime":320.28,"body":"and I wrote it and I gave it to my mentor and it "},{"startTime":314.88,"endTime":320.28,"body":"came back with so many red marks all over it and  "},{"startTime":320.28,"endTime":325.2,"body":"the first time I tried to put a syllabus together. "},{"startTime":320.28,"endTime":325.2,"body":"I mean, these are things that we're not taught as  "},{"startTime":325.2,"endTime":330.92,"body":"nurse practitioners and those skills that are "},{"startTime":325.2,"endTime":330.92,"body":"necessary to be in effective educator that   "},{"startTime":330.92,"endTime":334.92,"body":"like you said, you were lucky you had class, "},{"startTime":330.92,"endTime":334.92,"body":"you had a great mentor to show you the way, but I  "},{"startTime":334.92,"endTime":340.4,"body":"think about all the other faculty who really don't "},{"startTime":334.92,"endTime":340.4,"body":"have that orientation or that mentorship  "},{"startTime":340.4,"endTime":344.8,"body":"going from clinical practice to academia. So "},{"startTime":340.4,"endTime":344.8,"body":"Elizabeth, tell us about your journey. How did  "},{"startTime":344.8,"endTime":350.8,"body":"you get into nursing education?"},{"startTime":344.8,"endTime":350.8,"body":"I think as you mentioned  "},{"startTime":350.8,"endTime":356.28,"body":"most of ours are very similar and really kind "},{"startTime":350.8,"endTime":356.28,"body":"of how we got there. I was fortunate though that  "},{"startTime":356.28,"endTime":362.32,"body":"I had been on a floor for at least three years "},{"startTime":356.28,"endTime":362.32,"body":"years before being asked to be a preceptor but it  "},{"startTime":362.32,"endTime":368.72,"body":"wasn't that it wasn't a lot longer and while "},{"startTime":362.32,"endTime":368.72,"body":"I was precepting on the floor and became one of  "},{"startTime":368.72,"endTime":376.0,"body":"the primary educators on our unit with really "},{"startTime":368.72,"endTime":376.0,"body":"teaching newborn resuscitation and ACLS and BLS  "},{"startTime":376.0,"endTime":382.32,"body":"I really kind of started finding my passion and "},{"startTime":376.0,"endTime":382.32,"body":"spark for for educating and education. I also had  "},{"startTime":382.32,"endTime":388.76,"body":"some amazing faculty when I was in nursing school. "},{"startTime":382.32,"endTime":388.76,"body":"One in particular that always comes to mind for me  "},{"startTime":388.76,"endTime":393.84,"body":"and that she was really an amazing mentor "},{"startTime":388.76,"endTime":393.84,"body":"and great role model even from the profession  "},{"startTime":393.84,"endTime":400.04,"body":"and then moving into the  education "},{"startTime":393.84,"endTime":400.04,"body":"standpoint. So I embarked on an MSN in education  "},{"startTime":400.04,"endTime":406.52,"body":"as well and then kind of ended up in a little bit "},{"startTime":400.04,"endTime":406.52,"body":"of a reverse of my roles because my husband is  "},{"startTime":406.52,"endTime":413.0,"body":"retired military and so we traveled a lot with "},{"startTime":406.52,"endTime":413.0,"body":"his job because he was in the military for 29  "},{"startTime":413.0,"endTime":419.64,"body":"years and so we were actually stationed overseas "},{"startTime":413.0,"endTime":419.64,"body":"and I hadn't had the opportunity to be using my  "},{"startTime":419.64,"endTime":426.36,"body":"degree. I graduated with my degree when I was "},{"startTime":419.64,"endTime":426.36,"body":"over there, kept teaching BLS and ACLS and they  "},{"startTime":426.36,"endTime":431.08,"body":"kind of came to me and said hey, we have this job "},{"startTime":426.36,"endTime":431.08,"body":"that came open and it was actually in simulation  "},{"startTime":431.08,"endTime":437.16,"body":"so I was actually a simulation coordinator and "},{"startTime":431.08,"endTime":437.16,"body":"director before I was in academia as a faculty so  "},{"startTime":437.16,"endTime":442.16,"body":"I kind of ended up a little bit of the reverse but "},{"startTime":437.16,"endTime":442.16,"body":"still needing to use those same things that you're  "},{"startTime":442.16,"endTime":448.64,"body":"needing to do within a clinical setting and we "},{"startTime":442.16,"endTime":448.64,"body":"were with a medical group that really trained med  "},{"startTime":448.64,"endTime":453.64,"body":"techs, nurses, physicians, everybody - all health "},{"startTime":448.64,"endTime":453.64,"body":"care professions and then when we moved back to  "},{"startTime":453.64,"endTime":458.8,"body":"the states I had the opportunity of becoming an "},{"startTime":453.64,"endTime":458.8,"body":"adjunct faculty for a really short period of time.  "},{"startTime":458.8,"endTime":467.6,"body":"and then I became full-time faculty but as you had "},{"startTime":458.8,"endTime":467.6,"body":"mentioned, Jasline, it's really interesting. You  "},{"startTime":467.6,"endTime":473.16,"body":"prepare in your education even as an MSN in Ed "},{"startTime":467.6,"endTime":473.16,"body":"not even just so much as an advanced practice  "},{"startTime":473.16,"endTime":478.8,"body":"registered nurse, you still don't get the experience "},{"startTime":473.16,"endTime":478.8,"body":"of really operationalizing everything really  "},{"startTime":478.8,"endTime":483.16,"body":"well and so same thing as you had mentioned I "},{"startTime":478.8,"endTime":483.16,"body":"thought I created some amazing exams and then  "},{"startTime":483.16,"endTime":488.84,"body":"when half my class failed I was like oh that "},{"startTime":483.16,"endTime":488.84,"body":"probably wasn't the best exam at all and really  "},{"startTime":488.84,"endTime":493.68,"body":"try to backtrack to say okay - this was my mess up."},{"startTime":488.84,"endTime":493.68,"body":"Let's figure out how to get you guys  "},{"startTime":493.68,"endTime":499.0,"body":"back on track and then just really navigating and "},{"startTime":493.68,"endTime":499.0,"body":"managing a classroom because what I thought  "},{"startTime":499.0,"endTime":507.0,"body":"was an amazing idea and really had to struggle "},{"startTime":499.0,"endTime":507.0,"body":"with a lot is that I'm a very and I think that's  "},{"startTime":507.0,"endTime":512.44,"body":"probably what geared me towards simulation a lot "},{"startTime":507.0,"endTime":512.44,"body":"I'm an experiential learner myself and so I always  "},{"startTime":512.44,"endTime":517.44,"body":"liked those hands-on activities and like the "},{"startTime":512.44,"endTime":517.44,"body":"things that really kind of helped you do things  "},{"startTime":517.44,"endTime":522.76,"body":"and some students in an ADN program really didn't "},{"startTime":517.44,"endTime":522.76,"body":"appreciate that. Those first couple  "},{"startTime":522.76,"endTime":529.56,"body":"of years were really difficult and then I embarked "},{"startTime":522.76,"endTime":529.56,"body":"on my my PhD and I chose education as my PhD so  "},{"startTime":529.56,"endTime":536.0,"body":"my I continued that focus to be able to align "},{"startTime":529.56,"endTime":536.0,"body":"with pedagogical research and looking  "},{"startTime":536.0,"endTime":542.96,"body":"at education and that lens because I think it's "},{"startTime":536.0,"endTime":542.96,"body":"important as you mentioned Kellie to to really  "},{"startTime":542.96,"endTime":549.08,"body":"understand how did you become an educator from "},{"startTime":542.96,"endTime":549.08,"body":"those other areas and those other experiences  "},{"startTime":549.08,"endTime":554.8,"body":"that you had and I think unfortunately there "},{"startTime":549.08,"endTime":554.8,"body":"are moments in time that I think our profession  "},{"startTime":554.8,"endTime":562.68,"body":"especially when you do look at researchers in "},{"startTime":554.8,"endTime":562.68,"body":"academia nursing educational research really  "},{"startTime":562.68,"endTime":567.4,"body":"isn't the big bucket item like that's not where "},{"startTime":562.68,"endTime":567.4,"body":"you know you don't typically get funded really  "},{"startTime":567.4,"endTime":572.52,"body":"well, you're not like the lime light"},{"startTime":567.4,"endTime":572.52,"body":"because it's always it's just education.  "},{"startTime":572.52,"endTime":578.851,"body":"But to me it's always been extremely important to make"},{"startTime":572.52,"endTime":578.851,"body":"sure that we're educating our our profession appropriately."},{"startTime":578.851,"endTime":585.72,"body":"Yes, and it is important so you "},{"startTime":578.851,"endTime":585.72,"body":"wrote a wonderful article with for the Nurse  "},{"startTime":585.72,"endTime":589.96,"body":"Educator with some of your colleagues as I "},{"startTime":585.72,"endTime":589.96,"body":"mentioned called, \"A Scoping Review of Nurse  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":589.96,"endTime":594.48,"body":"Mind the Gap.\" Do you "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":589.96,"endTime":594.48,"body":"mind telling us a little bit about your recent  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":594.48,"endTime":598.313,"body":"article? So this particular "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":599.36,"endTime":605.8,"body":"article that I wrote with Dr. Sharpnack,  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":605.8,"endTime":616.32,"body":"Darla Gruben, Dr. Klenke-Borgmann, Dr. Goliat "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":605.8,"endTime":616.32,"body":"and Dr. Yeager kind of really came about the first  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":616.32,"endTime":623.92,"body":"conference back face-to-face with NLN. So "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":616.32,"endTime":623.92,"body":"went to the conference in DC and there was  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":623.92,"endTime":630.24,"body":"a lot of conversation I believe that was the "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":623.92,"endTime":630.24,"body":"same year that Dr. Leighton was the speaker  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":630.24,"endTime":639.04,"body":"and started hearing the buzz of the new article that had"},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":630.24,"endTime":639.04,"body":"come out from Cavanaugh on Dr. Sharpnack and  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":639.04,"endTime":649.76,"body":"how significantly it went down from that 23% "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":639.04,"endTime":649.76,"body":"to this 9% and then even again to 7% and so I  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":649.76,"endTime":655.2,"body":"kind of was sitting there during that time and "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":649.76,"endTime":655.2,"body":"started thinking, you know, what is  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":655.2,"endTime":663.4,"body":"really going on in our culture of education "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":655.2,"endTime":663.4,"body":"and for students in specific. I'm very,   "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":663.4,"endTime":668.28,"body":"I try to be reflective on my practice as a nurse "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":663.4,"endTime":668.28,"body":"educator and like I mentioned the first test that  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":668.28,"endTime":676.24,"body":"I wrote my almost over half my class failed "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":668.28,"endTime":676.24,"body":"so when I looked at that in my mind the  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":676.24,"endTime":683.64,"body":"failure wasn't on their part. The failure was on "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":676.24,"endTime":683.64,"body":"my part and so as I started thinking about this  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":683.64,"endTime":689.24,"body":"article and hearing everything that was going on "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":683.64,"endTime":689.24,"body":"and all the conversations that were occurring.   "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":689.88,"endTime":695.4,"body":"A light bulb kind of went off in my mind and "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":689.88,"endTime":695.4,"body":"I said, you know, I think actually Dr. Klenke-  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":695.4,"endTime":702.4,"body":"Borgmann was sitting next to me and I said,"},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":695.4,"endTime":702.4,"body":"\"when is it going to be on us?\" because in my  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":702.4,"endTime":708.32,"body":"mind this is similar to that when you do that "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":702.4,"endTime":708.32,"body":"item analysis on a test and half your class  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":708.32,"endTime":716.56,"body":"has failed - it's not on the student anymore. And so "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":708.32,"endTime":716.56,"body":"to me the light bulb was like, okay, wait a second,  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":716.56,"endTime":726.24,"body":"we have progressively gone down in our students "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":716.56,"endTime":726.24,"body":"preparation for residency and I'm very specific  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":726.24,"endTime":732.12,"body":"about for residency because that makes it even "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":726.24,"endTime":732.12,"body":"more I think a little bit a bigger red flag to me  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":732.12,"endTime":737.72,"body":"is that it's not that they're ready for practice. "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":732.12,"endTime":737.72,"body":"That article is saying that they were 7% ready for  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":737.72,"endTime":748.08,"body":"residency and so that's not on them anymore. That's "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":737.72,"endTime":748.08,"body":"us. What are we doing to really help prepare them  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":748.08,"endTime":755.12,"body":"for practice and what are we doing to be able "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":748.08,"endTime":755.12,"body":"to help us be able to be better educators?   "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":755.12,"endTime":760.44,"body":"When you look at historically and you know always "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":755.12,"endTime":760.44,"body":"coming off of a conference you always hear newer  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":760.44,"endTime":766.56,"body":"things and different things that you're doing, "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":760.44,"endTime":766.56,"body":"but historically we've never really been great  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":766.56,"endTime":770.88,"body":"with the number of faculty that we have for "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":766.56,"endTime":770.88,"body":"nursing. We know that there's a shortage of  "},{"speaker":"Educator Competencies","startTime":770.88,"endTime":781.4,"body":"nurses and faculty is even worse.
