Is there protected time? Do they have  "},{"startTime":88.68,"endTime":93.4,"body":"released time? Is this acknowledged "},{"startTime":88.68,"endTime":93.4,"body":"for their career growth and things of that  "},{"startTime":93.4,"endTime":98.2,"body":"nature because a lot of times I think about "},{"startTime":93.4,"endTime":98.2,"body":"my mentors, it's always been informal and they've  "},{"startTime":98.2,"endTime":103.48,"body":"been nice enough to take the time to help me"},{"startTime":98.2,"endTime":103.48,"body":"here and there but it's not a formalized role.  "},{"startTime":103.48,"endTime":110.16,"body":"So how do we institutionalize that to make sure "},{"startTime":103.48,"endTime":110.16,"body":"we have systematic support built in and you know  "},{"startTime":110.16,"endTime":116.12,"body":"all and also making it equitable for community "},{"startTime":110.16,"endTime":116.12,"body":"colleges, for university, you know, everyone because  "},{"startTime":116.12,"endTime":121.56,"body":"I come from a community college background and "},{"startTime":116.12,"endTime":121.56,"body":"we don't have that structure always.   "},{"startTime":121.56,"endTime":128.72,"body":"How does that look and how do we make it "},{"startTime":121.56,"endTime":128.72,"body":"formalized and really operationalize this process?  "},{"startTime":128.72,"endTime":133.44,"body":"Even when we talk about professional development, "},{"startTime":128.72,"endTime":133.44,"body":"are there funding and then when there  "},{"startTime":133.44,"endTime":137.2,"body":"is funds like I ask people, hey how come you're "},{"startTime":133.44,"endTime":137.2,"body":"not coming to this conference. They're just busy. "},{"startTime":137.2,"endTime":143.48,"body":"They're overwhelmed, right. So how do we make "},{"startTime":137.2,"endTime":143.48,"body":"it happen for them? I think all of us  "},{"startTime":143.48,"endTime":149.44,"body":"we've kind of had this affinity to simulation"},{"startTime":143.48,"endTime":149.44,"body":"so we've had some similar mindsets and  "},{"startTime":149.44,"endTime":154.507,"body":"we've pursued, but how do we get the other other elements, "},{"startTime":149.44,"endTime":154.507,"body":"the other pieces of it that?"},{"startTime":154.507,"endTime":161.08,"body":"I think that's a really great question. I think that's probably "},{"startTime":154.507,"endTime":161.08,"body":"one of the big elephants in the room because  "},{"startTime":161.08,"endTime":169.08,"body":"if you if there isn't that support for both the "},{"startTime":161.08,"endTime":169.08,"body":"mentee and the mentor then you are placing more  "},{"startTime":169.08,"endTime":175.36,"body":"burden on the person that's mentoring because "},{"startTime":169.08,"endTime":175.36,"body":"you can't make an automatic assumption that  "},{"startTime":175.36,"endTime":181.72,"body":"just because they are a senior member of faculty "},{"startTime":175.36,"endTime":181.72,"body":"that's done amazing work that's done pedagogical  "},{"startTime":181.72,"endTime":189.68,"body":"research that's like you know somebody in the "},{"startTime":181.72,"endTime":189.68,"body":"field that's just a Marilyn Oermann for instance  "},{"startTime":189.68,"endTime":196.08,"body":"I think it's you do place an unintentional "},{"startTime":189.68,"endTime":196.08,"body":"burden on them as well because then you're  "},{"startTime":196.08,"endTime":204.04,"body":"uploading what you're expecting them to be"},{"startTime":196.08,"endTime":204.04,"body":"doing. I think it's really it's a call probably  "},{"startTime":204.04,"endTime":209.76,"body":"and I think that ends up being that catch 22 again because if you don't have  "},{"startTime":211.0,"endTime":215.36,"body":"enough funds to be able to support the "},{"startTime":211.0,"endTime":215.36,"body":"professional development or the release  "},{"startTime":215.36,"endTime":221.72,"body":"in time because you have a shortage of faculty "},{"startTime":215.36,"endTime":221.72,"body":"and you can't accept enough students I mean I  "},{"startTime":221.72,"endTime":227.84,"body":"think it's really hard because it ends "},{"startTime":221.72,"endTime":227.84,"body":"up being this perpetual circle of really  "},{"startTime":227.84,"endTime":234.2,"body":"constantly chasing our tails of truly what is,"},{"startTime":227.84,"endTime":234.2,"body":"and I hate the adage what came first  "},{"startTime":234.2,"endTime":240.36,"body":"the chicken or the egg, but you're not, you're "},{"startTime":234.2,"endTime":240.36,"body":"never able to find the solution because   "},{"startTime":240.36,"endTime":244.6,"body":"there's always something that's circularly coming "},{"startTime":240.36,"endTime":244.6,"body":"back that's like oh well now this is a problem or  "},{"startTime":244.6,"endTime":250.32,"body":"now this is a problem. I think a big part of it is "},{"startTime":244.6,"endTime":250.32,"body":"administrative support. I think that's one of the  "},{"startTime":250.32,"endTime":260.68,"body":"bigger things you really have to be able to have "},{"startTime":250.32,"endTime":260.68,"body":"a dean or deans that are going to be really truly  "},{"startTime":260.68,"endTime":265.4,"body":"committed and really saying that this is how"},{"startTime":260.68,"endTime":265.4,"body":"they want to structure and this is what  "},{"startTime":265.4,"endTime":271.64,"body":"they're going to do and then have that ability "},{"startTime":265.4,"endTime":271.64,"body":"to then really try to pull it up that chain of  "},{"startTime":271.64,"endTime":279.08,"body":"systematic structures because really some of it "},{"startTime":271.64,"endTime":279.08,"body":"does come down a good chunk of it comes down to  "},{"startTime":279.08,"endTime":285.68,"body":"funding. It's not, maybe it's even if you're "},{"startTime":279.08,"endTime":285.68,"body":"like within a small institution and you do have a  "},{"startTime":285.68,"endTime":294.6,"body":"big group of faculty that are onboarding and "},{"startTime":285.68,"endTime":294.6,"body":"coming in is it fiduciary responsible to send  "},{"startTime":294.6,"endTime":300.28,"body":"all of them to a conference or is there some way "},{"startTime":294.6,"endTime":300.28,"body":"that you could possibly do some type of of a mini  "},{"startTime":300.28,"endTime":307.04,"body":"conference bringing people to them and do you know "},{"startTime":300.28,"endTime":307.04,"body":"something within your regional location and even  "},{"startTime":307.04,"endTime":311.44,"body":"with that sometimes when you do something like "},{"startTime":307.04,"endTime":311.44,"body":"that there could be the opportunity to really  "},{"startTime":311.44,"endTime":317.56,"body":"not necessarily make you know get money off of it "},{"startTime":311.44,"endTime":317.56,"body":"but to be able to support it by sending  "},{"startTime":317.56,"endTime":324.16,"body":"the option out to some of those other regional "},{"startTime":317.56,"endTime":324.16,"body":"areas or or local areas because for me I think of  "},{"startTime":324.16,"endTime":329.64,"body":"basically within Texas. I mean, the state is so "},{"startTime":324.16,"endTime":329.64,"body":"big. We have so many rurally underserved areas  "},{"startTime":330.4,"endTime":335.16,"body":"and I mean that would be a great opportunity if "},{"startTime":330.4,"endTime":335.16,"body":"somebody wanted to offer some type of educational  "},{"startTime":335.16,"endTime":340.44,"body":"session down on the Rio Grand Valley to "},{"startTime":335.16,"endTime":340.44,"body":"where they may not have as many opportunities or  "},{"startTime":340.44,"endTime":346.24,"body":"funds because they are in a rurally underserved "},{"startTime":340.44,"endTime":346.24,"body":"area that then they could come to that regional  "},{"startTime":346.24,"endTime":350.84,"body":"location to be you know to be getting "},{"startTime":346.24,"endTime":350.84,"body":"those opportunities for education  "},{"startTime":350.84,"endTime":355.96,"body":"and services because it's really, I mean, even for "},{"startTime":350.84,"endTime":355.96,"body":"somebody from the Rio Grande Valley to come all  "},{"startTime":355.96,"endTime":361.28,"body":"the way up to Fort Worth where I'm at, that "},{"startTime":355.96,"endTime":361.28,"body":"driving wise that's a good eight, nine hours.  "},{"startTime":361.28,"endTime":368.419,"body":"It's that's how big the state of Texas is. Maryland"},{"startTime":361.28,"endTime":368.419,"body":"can fit - we could fit a couple Marylands here."},{"startTime":368.419,"endTime":375.68,"body":"But I do think it's important though if "},{"startTime":368.419,"endTime":375.68,"body":"organizations want to increase the number of  "},{"startTime":375.68,"endTime":380.72,"body":"faculty that they have to invest in them, in the faculty because what I've seen is  "},{"startTime":380.72,"endTime":386.84,"body":"the other side. You hire all the faculty, you"},{"startTime":380.72,"endTime":386.84,"body":"don't have an established structured"},{"startTime":386.84,"endTime":391.0,"body":"orientation for this new faculty and what "},{"startTime":386.84,"endTime":391.0,"body":"happens they get frustrated, they get burnt  "},{"startTime":391.0,"endTime":397.64,"body":"out and they leave academia within a couple"},{"startTime":391.0,"endTime":397.64,"body":"of years. I think that you have to invest"},{"startTime":397.64,"endTime":404.24,"body":"and have a plan too. One thing I did appreciate "},{"startTime":397.64,"endTime":404.24,"body":"about my first nursing education position was  "},{"startTime":404.24,"endTime":409.4,"body":"there was a structured plan. You were assigned a "},{"startTime":404.24,"endTime":409.4,"body":"mentor when you walked in the door. You had to sit  "},{"startTime":409.4,"endTime":413.28,"body":"on the curriculum committee for two years. You "},{"startTime":409.4,"endTime":413.28,"body":"had to sit on the test development committee.  "},{"startTime":413.28,"endTime":417.04,"body":"I don't even know if universities still have "},{"startTime":413.28,"endTime":417.04,"body":"these committees. I might be dating myself but  "},{"startTime":417.04,"endTime":422.28,"body":"I learned so much. At first I was like, "},{"startTime":417.04,"endTime":422.28,"body":"oh, we're being forced to but I needed that and  "},{"startTime":422.28,"endTime":428.32,"body":"I learned so much from just being a part of those "},{"startTime":422.28,"endTime":428.32,"body":"committees. And also we need mentors.  "},{"startTime":428.32,"endTime":433.64,"body":"That was brought up. I don't know where I would be"},{"startTime":428.32,"endTime":433.64,"body":"if I didn't have my mentors and people  "},{"startTime":433.64,"endTime":440.16,"body":"that have a strong foundation in education but "},{"startTime":433.64,"endTime":440.16,"body":"they need to be compensated for that  "},{"startTime":440.16,"endTime":444.48,"body":"whether that's money, whether that's, you know."},{"startTime":440.16,"endTime":444.48,"body":"I remember when I was in academia part of my  "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":444.48,"endTime":449.68,"body":"are "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":444.48,"endTime":449.68,"body":"you mentoring anyone - not just students but  "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":449.68,"endTime":453.88,"body":"faculty. And that was part of your evaluation so "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":449.68,"endTime":453.88,"body":"they need to get credit for that work that they're  "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":453.88,"endTime":459.2,"body":"doing. But I think that piece is so important to "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":453.88,"endTime":459.2,"body":"have a mentor that you can bounce back and say:  "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":459.2,"endTime":463.72,"body":"can you take a look at this syllabus? Can you "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":459.2,"endTime":463.72,"body":"help me decipher this test? I remember  "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":463.72,"endTime":468.0,"body":"the first test analysis. Remember when you got the "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":463.72,"endTime":468.0,"body":"the data and I was like what do I do with this? "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":468.0,"endTime":472.68,"body":"What questions do I need to change?"},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":468.0,"endTime":472.68,"body":"Through all those discussions you have no clue  "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":472.68,"endTime":479.44,"body":"what you're doing and nursing education. So I just "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":472.68,"endTime":479.44,"body":"want to stress that that piece is really important."},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":481.24,"endTime":487.08,"body":"What about ... we talked about it's "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":481.24,"endTime":487.08,"body":"important for the organizations to support  "},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":487.08,"endTime":492.56,"body":"faculty but also I think some of it maybe needs"},{"speaker":"yearly evaluation it did ask the question","startTime":487.08,"endTime":492.56,"body":"to be self-directed. So what advice would you  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":492.56,"endTime":496.32,"body":"let's say that they're "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":492.56,"endTime":496.32,"body":"institution, they send them to that conference  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":496.32,"endTime":504.0,"body":"and maybe they have a mentor but what else can "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":496.32,"endTime":504.0,"body":"faculty do that is more proactive that  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":504.0,"endTime":510.948,"body":"they can do on their own to kind of meet these "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":504.0,"endTime":510.948,"body":"educator competencies?"},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":510.948,"endTime":520.72,"body":"I think one of the things that I did a while back and "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":510.948,"endTime":520.72,"body":"had some amazing educators that kind of pulled  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":520.72,"endTime":526.44,"body":"some of these things forward and even though "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":520.72,"endTime":526.44,"body":"sometimes it can be extremely like because  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":526.44,"endTime":536.8,"body":"it's theory but is really looking at research and "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":526.44,"endTime":536.8,"body":"information that is outside of nursing and so a  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":536.8,"endTime":542.2,"body":"lot of times when I would start looking at maybe "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":536.8,"endTime":542.2,"body":"trying something different. I mean, even when I did  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":542.2,"endTime":550.8,"body":"my dissertation I looked at something outside of "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":542.2,"endTime":550.8,"body":"nursing to look at. Really and dating myself now. I  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":550.8,"endTime":556.48,"body":"did so my research was on the flip classroom and "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":550.8,"endTime":556.48,"body":"educators perspectives of the flip classroom and  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":556.48,"endTime":566.36,"body":"so I intentionally went outside of nursing "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":556.48,"endTime":566.36,"body":"to really see where education was at especially  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":566.36,"endTime":576.12,"body":"in that K through 12 area because those are who "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":566.36,"endTime":576.12,"body":"come to us. I think in order for us to  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":576.12,"endTime":585.92,"body":"be consistently in a place to where we can help "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":576.12,"endTime":585.92,"body":"become better educators and as a faculty member  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":585.92,"endTime":592.36,"body":"we need to to be okay with looking at literature "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":585.92,"endTime":592.36,"body":"outside of our own profession because many times  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":592.36,"endTime":601.2,"body":"especially when it comes to teaching practices in "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":592.36,"endTime":601.2,"body":"nursing education we're behind. We're very behind.  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":602.48,"endTime":607.2,"body":"We're really, I mean, I can't express that enough."},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":602.48,"endTime":607.2,"body":"We are so far behind. I mean, when  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":607.2,"endTime":612.0,"body":"you still see somebody that's using a PowerPoint "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":607.2,"endTime":612.0,"body":"presentation in a classroom we really kind of end  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":612.0,"endTime":622.0,"body":"up - we do it to ourselves because we're so familiar "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":612.0,"endTime":622.0,"body":"with what the practice is and it's easy, right?"},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":622.0,"endTime":627.88,"body":"So I taught our OB course or our maternal"},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":622.0,"endTime":627.88,"body":"child courses because I'm an obstetric  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":627.88,"endTime":637.08,"body":"nurse at heart. I went back to that right you "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":627.88,"endTime":637.08,"body":"go to a PowerPoint because I know how to, I knew  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":637.08,"endTime":640.88,"body":"all the stuff about being an obstetric nurse but "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":637.08,"endTime":640.88,"body":"the unfortunate thing is is our students don't  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":640.88,"endTime":646.04,"body":"need to know what I know. They needed to know"},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":640.88,"endTime":646.04,"body":"what they needed to do in order to be able  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":646.04,"endTime":653.56,"body":"to do it more appropriately. So I think you need"},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":646.04,"endTime":653.56,"body":"to be, you truly do need to be a lifelong  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":653.56,"endTime":659.153,"body":"learner. You have to be okay with looking at "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":653.56,"endTime":659.153,"body":"things that are completely crazy and off-the-wall.  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":659.153,"endTime":664.0,"body":"I always say and it's one of our values here at "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":659.153,"endTime":664.0,"body":"University of North Texas Health Science Center  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":664.0,"endTime":671.12,"body":"is to question the conventional and to be okay "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":664.0,"endTime":671.12,"body":"with failure because if you're not okay with  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":671.12,"endTime":679.12,"body":"failing you're not going to be Innovative because "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":671.12,"endTime":679.12,"body":"somebody that's an innovator at heart is okay to  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":679.12,"endTime":685.16,"body":"question why it's being done the way it's being "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":679.12,"endTime":685.16,"body":"done and to start looking around the corner for an  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":685.16,"endTime":689.48,"body":"innovative solution as to how we can improve it "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":685.16,"endTime":689.48,"body":"and I think that's also the same thing as were  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":689.48,"endTime":694.84,"body":"saying. We're all, we're simulationists at heart "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":689.48,"endTime":694.84,"body":"and I think that's probably that we're all those  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":694.84,"endTime":699.56,"body":"innovative thinkers because we always questioned "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":694.84,"endTime":699.56,"body":"well, why are you doing it this way? Let's do it  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":699.56,"endTime":704.8,"body":"this way. We always try to find those ways for "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":699.56,"endTime":704.8,"body":"our students to really truly grasp what they  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":704.8,"endTime":714.8,"body":"need to do and I think feedback is a big thing. "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":704.8,"endTime":714.8,"body":"I don't think personally in my  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":714.8,"endTime":719.36,"body":"experiences in academia for the period of time "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":714.8,"endTime":719.36,"body":"that I've been in academia I don't think we truly  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":719.36,"endTime":726.92,"body":"do a really great job of assessing and receiving "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":719.36,"endTime":726.92,"body":"feedback, whether it's peer feedback or student  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":726.92,"endTime":736.48,"body":"feedback with an evaluation type of process that's "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":726.92,"endTime":736.48,"body":"going to be appropriate, that's going to be useful,  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":736.48,"endTime":743.0,"body":"that's going to help us improve a course. And a "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":736.48,"endTime":743.0,"body":"lot of people don't teach their students how to  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":743.0,"endTime":748.56,"body":"do an evaluation because they think it's an "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":743.0,"endTime":748.56,"body":"evaluation that they're going to be able to just  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":748.56,"endTime":753.84,"body":"completely disintegrate the faculty member because "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":748.56,"endTime":753.84,"body":"they didn't get the grade that they were getting.  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":753.84,"endTime":760.12,"body":"Well, what onus was on you to receive the grade "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":753.84,"endTime":760.12,"body":"that you thought you earned? Were the objectives  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":760.12,"endTime":765.04,"body":"truly clear? Did you meet the objectives of the "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":760.12,"endTime":765.04,"body":"course? Did the faculty help guide you to those  "},{"speaker":"have for someone","startTime":765.04,"endTime":770.96,"body":"objectives?
