I want to first just give a "},{"startTime":51.0,"endTime":57.2,"body":"quick description about the Sim Lead Program,  "},{"startTime":57.2,"endTime":63.08,"body":"which we are currently accepting applications, "},{"startTime":57.2,"endTime":63.08,"body":"is a one-year program and it's designed for  "},{"startTime":63.08,"endTime":68.8,"body":"people that are in the simulation field who are "},{"startTime":63.08,"endTime":68.8,"body":"looking to advance their career and assume more  "},{"startTime":68.8,"endTime":74.84,"body":"of a leadership role in simulation each cohort "},{"startTime":68.8,"endTime":74.84,"body":"is about 20 participants. The people that have  "},{"startTime":74.84,"endTime":78.84,"body":"graduated from the program have said it's "},{"startTime":74.84,"endTime":78.84,"body":"changed their career, it's changed their  "},{"startTime":78.84,"endTime":83.96,"body":"lives. So we wanted to talk about the benefits "},{"startTime":78.84,"endTime":83.96,"body":"of the program, talk to some of our individuals  "},{"startTime":83.96,"endTime":89.4,"body":"here who have graduated from the program and how "},{"startTime":83.96,"endTime":89.4,"body":"it's impact their career. So I want to just start  "},{"startTime":89.4,"endTime":94.76,"body":"with I'll introduce myself. So to start it off the first question "},{"startTime":181.24,"endTime":189.2,"body":"I have for you, can you just share about how your  "},{"startTime":189.2,"endTime":197.24,"body":"participation in our NLN Sim Leadership Institute "},{"startTime":189.2,"endTime":197.24,"body":"Program? How has it changed your career? Chris, do  "},{"startTime":197.24,"endTime":205.08,"body":"you want to start us off? I will start you off yes "},{"startTime":197.24,"endTime":205.08,"body":"so for me the Simulation Leadership Program has  "},{"startTime":205.08,"endTime":214.0,"body":"has 100% changed my life and my career trajectory. "},{"startTime":205.08,"endTime":214.0,"body":"The first part is the 2015 cohort, there were  "},{"startTime":214.0,"endTime":223.8,"body":"20 of us and we really bonded as a group. And still "},{"startTime":214.0,"endTime":223.8,"body":"continue to do a lot of work together and because  "},{"startTime":223.8,"endTime":230.2,"body":"of that group and the things that I learned at "},{"startTime":223.8,"endTime":230.2,"body":"the program, it's the whole reason why I'm at  "},{"startTime":230.2,"endTime":237.88,"body":"George Washington University now. I started out at "},{"startTime":230.2,"endTime":237.88,"body":"a small community college and I was trying to move  "},{"startTime":237.88,"endTime":247.68,"body":"simulation forward and this program helped me "},{"startTime":237.88,"endTime":247.68,"body":"apply for different roles at the community college  "},{"startTime":247.68,"endTime":255.76,"body":"and from there an opening came at GW and without "},{"startTime":247.68,"endTime":255.76,"body":"the coaching and the support that I had from the  "},{"startTime":255.76,"endTime":262.4,"body":"NLN I would have never applied for these programs "},{"startTime":255.76,"endTime":262.4,"body":"and I certainly would not be an associate dean at  "},{"startTime":262.4,"endTime":268.72,"body":"this time. Well I want to say congratulations on "},{"startTime":262.4,"endTime":268.72,"body":"your new role. Thank you. Thank you. All right,  "},{"startTime":269.28,"endTime":274.84,"body":"Dr. Thomas, can you tell us how this program "},{"startTime":269.28,"endTime":274.84,"body":"has helped you in your career? It just opened  "},{"startTime":274.84,"endTime":282.32,"body":"up the world of simulation for me. Again, just as "},{"startTime":274.84,"endTime":282.32,"body":"Crystel identified, I had been working at a state  "},{"startTime":282.32,"endTime":289.64,"body":"university in Pennsylvania doing some simulation. "},{"startTime":282.32,"endTime":289.64,"body":"They hadn't really formally introduced it into  "},{"startTime":289.64,"endTime":294.44,"body":"the curriculum so through learning, through all of "},{"startTime":289.64,"endTime":294.44,"body":"that and the mentoring through the program I was  "},{"startTime":294.44,"endTime":302.0,"body":"able to help them design the curriculum "},{"startTime":294.44,"endTime":302.0,"body":"around best practices and again it's really  "},{"startTime":302.0,"endTime":308.2,"body":"that networking piece. I ... just felt stuck. "},{"startTime":302.0,"endTime":308.2,"body":"I just was stuck. You're sort of in your  "},{"startTime":308.2,"endTime":315.08,"body":"own little world and you just get feedback from "},{"startTime":308.2,"endTime":315.08,"body":"those that are in that world but as you start to  "},{"startTime":315.08,"endTime":320.8,"body":"talk to different people with similar "},{"startTime":315.08,"endTime":320.8,"body":"struggles, their challenges, their triumphs and  "},{"startTime":320.8,"endTime":327.36,"body":"being able to support one another through all of "},{"startTime":320.8,"endTime":327.36,"body":"that because as many programs start out, there's  "},{"startTime":327.36,"endTime":332.92,"body":"usually one champion. There's one person that's "},{"startTime":327.36,"endTime":332.92,"body":"sort of trying to move it through and you feel  "},{"startTime":332.92,"endTime":339.08,"body":"a bit isolated. So this program, like I said, just "},{"startTime":332.92,"endTime":339.08,"body":"opened it up. I was just like, wow, there's"},{"startTime":339.08,"endTime":346.68,"body":"a whole other world to learn and it gave me "},{"startTime":339.08,"endTime":346.68,"body":"that opportunity to do that. Great, thank you.  "},{"startTime":346.68,"endTime":353.8,"body":"And Dr. Turkelson, how has it changed your career? "},{"startTime":346.68,"endTime":353.8,"body":"I would say it's been definitely lifechanging as  "},{"startTime":353.8,"endTime":360.72,"body":"the others have mentioned. When I was in the Sim "},{"startTime":353.8,"endTime":360.72,"body":"leader program in 2011 and I was just starting  "},{"startTime":360.72,"endTime":367.0,"body":"my doctorate program and I was a clinical nurse "},{"startTime":360.72,"endTime":367.0,"body":"specialist on the hospital side and I like many  "},{"startTime":367.0,"endTime":373.52,"body":"people got thrown into simulation. My boss sent "},{"startTime":367.0,"endTime":373.52,"body":"me to a conference where Dr. Pam Jeffries was  "},{"startTime":373.52,"endTime":379.72,"body":"speaking, myself and one other colleague, and when "},{"startTime":373.52,"endTime":379.72,"body":"we returned we were told you have to implement  "},{"startTime":379.72,"endTime":385.6,"body":"simulation into critical care residency program "},{"startTime":379.72,"endTime":385.6,"body":"and nursing orientation. I knew nothing about  "},{"startTime":385.6,"endTime":392.4,"body":"simulation that was in 2011 and just like Dr. Thomas said, there was nobody in the hospital that ... "},{"startTime":392.4,"endTime":399.16,"body":"I had no resources. I had nobody else and I knew "},{"startTime":392.4,"endTime":399.16,"body":"nothing. So I really looked to this program to help  "},{"startTime":399.16,"endTime":405.64,"body":"me build my knowledge and expertise and simulation "},{"startTime":399.16,"endTime":405.64,"body":"and what it did is just like has already been  "},{"startTime":405.64,"endTime":412.84,"body":"shared - it connected me to experts in the field. "},{"startTime":405.64,"endTime":412.84,"body":"It created a network of colleagues to collaborate  "},{"startTime":412.84,"endTime":418.44,"body":"with not just during the program but after the "},{"startTime":412.84,"endTime":418.44,"body":"program. It opened the doors for involvement  "},{"startTime":418.44,"endTime":428.52,"body":"in INACSL and SSH and just really like a broader "},{"startTime":418.44,"endTime":428.52,"body":"world out there of simulation and for me it really  "},{"startTime":428.52,"endTime":434.48,"body":"was the foundation of my beginning to develop "},{"startTime":428.52,"endTime":434.48,"body":"an expertise in simulation and set myself up as  "},{"startTime":434.48,"endTime":439.24,"body":"a simulation leader. So as I mentioned I was at "},{"startTime":434.48,"endTime":439.24,"body":"the beginning of my doctorate program and that  "},{"startTime":439.24,"endTime":447.04,"body":"fueled my DNP project, that fueled my current "},{"startTime":439.24,"endTime":447.04,"body":"research and grant funding but it also opened the  "},{"startTime":447.04,"endTime":452.04,"body":"door for me to move into academia and create "},{"startTime":447.04,"endTime":452.04,"body":"a director position at a school where there  "},{"startTime":452.04,"endTime":459.96,"body":"was nobody overseeing the sim program. I just"},{"startTime":452.04,"endTime":459.96,"body":"could probably go on and on for a long time  "},{"startTime":459.96,"endTime":466.88,"body":"about how it changed my life, but the amazing thing "},{"startTime":459.96,"endTime":466.88,"body":"really is the that mentorship and collaboration to  "},{"startTime":466.88,"endTime":474.16,"body":"me, like those are the biggest pieces because it "},{"startTime":466.88,"endTime":474.16,"body":"is not  always the village, right. It's that  "},{"startTime":474.16,"endTime":481.28,"body":"helps us do what we do every day and so for for "},{"startTime":474.16,"endTime":481.28,"body":"me that was a huge piece but it also gave me a lot  "},{"startTime":481.28,"endTime":487.6,"body":"of insight into leadership strategies and how to "},{"startTime":481.28,"endTime":487.6,"body":"lead a program and how to advocate for simulation  "},{"startTime":487.6,"endTime":494.32,"body":"because many of us get thrown into these positions "},{"startTime":487.6,"endTime":494.32,"body":"and we have to advocate for what it is that we do  "},{"startTime":494.32,"endTime":499.96,"body":"and how we do it and how it makes a difference so "},{"startTime":494.32,"endTime":499.96,"body":"it it really helped me in doing that. Excellent and  "},{"startTime":499.96,"endTime":504.92,"body":"I want to kind of piggyback off of that. So to "},{"startTime":499.96,"endTime":504.92,"body":"go a little bit more in detail about the program,  "},{"startTime":504.92,"endTime":511.0,"body":"again, it's a year-long program and there's "},{"startTime":504.92,"endTime":511.0,"body":"so many components to it, like you mentioned  "},{"startTime":511.0,"endTime":516.84,"body":"there's the mentorship. Another component is "},{"startTime":511.0,"endTime":516.84,"body":"that you get to learn from simulation experts  "},{"startTime":516.84,"endTime":523.92,"body":"from around the world and it also helps you"},{"startTime":516.84,"endTime":523.92,"body":"to also kind of plan your trajectory for  "},{"startTime":523.92,"endTime":528.16,"body":"your career. I know a big part of it is really "},{"startTime":523.92,"endTime":528.16,"body":"kind of mapping out where do you see yourself  "},{"startTime":528.16,"endTime":534.56,"body":"in three years and and most importantly you have "},{"startTime":528.16,"endTime":534.56,"body":"regular workshops and meetings and you're learning  "},{"startTime":534.56,"endTime":541.0,"body":"different techniques on how to be a leader. So I "},{"startTime":534.56,"endTime":541.0,"body":"want to ask you - being a graduate from  "},{"startTime":541.0,"endTime":546.56,"body":"the program, how specifically has it helped you "},{"startTime":541.0,"endTime":546.56,"body":"with your leadership skills and your leadership  "},{"startTime":546.56,"endTime":552.48,"body":"development?  The leadership assessment - so "},{"startTime":546.56,"endTime":552.48,"body":"that was one thing that really helped and then  "},{"startTime":552.48,"endTime":557.8,"body":"of course you're assigned that that mentor and so "},{"startTime":552.48,"endTime":557.8,"body":"I was going along with fake it till you  "},{"startTime":557.8,"endTime":563.52,"body":"make it type of thing. So what do other leaders "},{"startTime":557.8,"endTime":563.52,"body":"do? How do I do that? But then they really sort of  "},{"startTime":563.52,"endTime":567.72,"body":"help me understand that everybody has their"},{"startTime":563.52,"endTime":567.72,"body":"own leadership strengths. I mean that was  "},{"startTime":567.72,"endTime":572.64,"body":"the sort of the pool of that. So that assessment "},{"startTime":567.72,"endTime":572.64,"body":"helped me really identify that I'm more  "},{"startTime":572.64,"endTime":580.6,"body":"of a relator, learner, and advocator. There is no one "},{"startTime":572.64,"endTime":580.6,"body":"one way to lead. so to lean into those strengths so  "},{"startTime":580.6,"endTime":586.88,"body":"that you know those around you as you start moving "},{"startTime":580.6,"endTime":586.88,"body":"forward and team building that you're authentic to  "},{"startTime":586.88,"endTime":591.04,"body":"yourself because it's really hard to be a leader "},{"startTime":586.88,"endTime":591.04,"body":"if you're not authentic. That's sort of what stood  "},{"startTime":591.04,"endTime":599.0,"body":"out to me. Excellent, yeah. I think a lot of us we"},{"startTime":591.04,"endTime":599.0,"body":"started as faculty in a nursing program  "},{"startTime":599.0,"endTime":603.04,"body":"and then we went into these leadership roles and "},{"startTime":599.0,"endTime":603.04,"body":"I don't know about you, but I find that I didn't  "},{"startTime":603.04,"endTime":607.96,"body":"really have any training that prepared me to be "},{"startTime":603.04,"endTime":607.96,"body":"a leader. Those skills are very unique.  "},{"startTime":607.96,"endTime":612.48,"body":"I that's why I think this program is so"},{"startTime":607.96,"endTime":612.48,"body":"important because we don't have those  "},{"startTime":612.48,"endTime":617.56,"body":"opportunities to develop our leadership "},{"startTime":612.48,"endTime":617.56,"body":"skills because a lot of times we're just thrown  "},{"startTime":617.56,"endTime":622.52,"body":"into these roles. We're thankful for it, but we"},{"startTime":617.56,"endTime":622.52,"body":"need that preparation because there are  "},{"startTime":622.52,"endTime":629.44,"body":"specific traits and skills needed in order to "},{"startTime":622.52,"endTime":629.44,"body":"to lead a team or to oversee a simulation setup.  "},{"startTime":629.44,"endTime":634.32,"body":"So Dr. Farina, I see that you had wanted to answer "},{"startTime":629.44,"endTime":634.32,"body":"that question also. Can you tell us about how it's  "},{"startTime":634.32,"endTime":641.0,"body":"advanced your leadership skills? Well, we had "},{"startTime":634.32,"endTime":641.0,"body":"such amazing leadership role models you know  "},{"startTime":641.0,"endTime":651.24,"body":"from and again we were very privileged "},{"startTime":641.0,"endTime":651.24,"body":"to have Pam Jeffries as as one of our leaders  "},{"startTime":651.24,"endTime":659.44,"body":"and role models that helped us through. Mary Anne Rizzolo, Sue Forneris, Mary Fey were all part of my Sim Lead"},{"startTime":659.44,"endTime":667.52,"body":"cohort and they were who we learned from and so "},{"startTime":659.44,"endTime":667.52,"body":"they gave us such guidance and really role modeled  "},{"startTime":667.52,"endTime":675.64,"body":"what true leaders are and really role modeled "},{"startTime":667.52,"endTime":675.64,"body":"simulation and how it's supposed to be that  "},{"startTime":675.64,"endTime":681.92,"body":"psychologically safe environment where it's okay "},{"startTime":675.64,"endTime":681.92,"body":"to make mistakes. And they encouraged us to to take  "},{"startTime":681.92,"endTime":694.12,"body":"risks in leadership. And so as Dr. Turkelson was "},{"startTime":681.92,"endTime":694.12,"body":"saying it was really an opportunity to build our  "},{"startTime":694.12,"endTime":701.8,"body":"career, build our pathway to take risks and say "},{"startTime":694.12,"endTime":701.8,"body":"okay, there isn't a sim director here. Let's  "},{"startTime":701.8,"endTime":711.0,"body":"make one. Can I, could I possibly pitch"},{"startTime":701.8,"endTime":711.0,"body":"that to the university leaders to say  "},{"startTime":711.0,"endTime":719.2,"body":"can we do this? And it was because of those "},{"startTime":711.0,"endTime":719.2,"body":"role models that really helped me grow. And I'm  "},{"startTime":719.2,"endTime":727.68,"body":"assuming it also helped build your confidence. Oh "},{"startTime":719.2,"endTime":727.68,"body":"yes ,oh yes. Oh I was just going  "},{"startTime":727.68,"endTime":734.52,"body":"to piggy back off of that and say I think they "},{"startTime":727.68,"endTime":734.52,"body":"also challenged us right to think beyond where  "},{"startTime":734.52,"endTime":742.92,"body":"we were at that moment in time but to think future "},{"startTime":734.52,"endTime":742.92,"body":"and where you want to be and how to best position  "},{"startTime":742.92,"endTime":749.48,"body":"yourself to be that person that's selected as the "},{"startTime":742.92,"endTime":749.48,"body":"director to be that leader in your organization.  "},{"startTime":749.48,"endTime":757.44,"body":"So you know part of I think being a leader is "},{"startTime":749.48,"endTime":757.44,"body":"also and we have great role models is stimulating  "},{"startTime":757.44,"endTime":761.84,"body":"the idea in somebody else that they can be more "},{"startTime":757.44,"endTime":761.84,"body":"than they thought they could be and that's what  "},{"startTime":761.84,"endTime":767.4,"body":"this program definitely did because when I entered "},{"startTime":761.84,"endTime":767.4,"body":"it I like didn't know what I didn't know. And I  "},{"startTime":767.4,"endTime":772.56,"body":"really didn't ... never could I have imagined where "},{"startTime":767.4,"endTime":772.56,"body":"I would be in the things that I'm doing today in  "},{"startTime":772.56,"endTime":780.16,"body":"simulation. Never ever in 2011 would have dreamed "},{"startTime":772.56,"endTime":780.16,"body":"that and those role models to we can still reach  "},{"startTime":780.16,"endTime":785.52,"body":"out to them and our colleagues we can still reach "},{"startTime":780.16,"endTime":785.52,"body":"out to them. So it's not just something that's like  "},{"startTime":785.52,"endTime":791.0,"body":"once you're done in the program you never hear "},{"startTime":785.52,"endTime":791.0,"body":"from your mentors again. You see them all the  "},{"startTime":791.0,"endTime":797.4,"body":"time, you hear from them, they encourage you, they "},{"startTime":791.0,"endTime":797.4,"body":"they say you should do this, you should do that, and  "},{"startTime":797.4,"endTime":802.64,"body":"and so they've opened a lot of doors and maybe "},{"startTime":797.4,"endTime":802.64,"body":"opened my mind to things that I never thought  "},{"startTime":802.64,"endTime":809.4,"body":"I could do. Great, great. So I know that a lot of "},{"startTime":802.64,"endTime":809.4,"body":"you have had career changes since you graduated  "},{"startTime":809.4,"endTime":814.6,"body":"from the Simulation Leadership Program. Can you "},{"startTime":809.4,"endTime":814.6,"body":"tell me a little bit in detail about what's  "},{"startTime":814.6,"endTime":822.92,"body":"changed since you graduated as far as your career? "},{"startTime":814.6,"endTime":822.92,"body":"I can. I mean I was in my doctorate program so I  "},{"startTime":822.92,"endTime":831.52,"body":"achieved my DNP in 2013 and as I mentioned I was "},{"startTime":822.92,"endTime":831.52,"body":"in the hospital setting doing simulation there  "},{"startTime":831.52,"endTime":838.16,"body":"so I applied a lot of the concepts I learned in "},{"startTime":831.52,"endTime":838.16,"body":"the program to simulation on the acute care side  "},{"startTime":838.16,"endTime":846.44,"body":"and in nursing and my DNP project was on nurse-"},{"startTime":838.16,"endTime":846.44,"body":"physician communication using simulation.   "},{"startTime":846.44,"endTime":856.4,"body":"We were able to show an improvement in that and "},{"startTime":846.44,"endTime":856.4,"body":"it was really exciting but then in 2014 I had an  "},{"startTime":856.4,"endTime":863.72,"body":"opportunity to move into the academic world and "},{"startTime":856.4,"endTime":863.72,"body":"so I moved into an assistant professor position  "},{"startTime":863.72,"endTime":869.36,"body":"in 2014 at the University of Michigan Flint School "},{"startTime":863.72,"endTime":869.36,"body":"of Nursing. And again, as I mentioned, at that time  "},{"startTime":869.36,"endTime":874.8,"body":"they had one room simulation center and they "},{"startTime":869.36,"endTime":874.8,"body":"had nobody overseeing it was just kind of a  "},{"startTime":874.8,"endTime":882.68,"body":"free-for-all people were told to do simulation and "},{"startTime":874.8,"endTime":882.68,"body":"again I just kind of lean back into the experience  "},{"startTime":882.68,"endTime":888.32,"body":"I had in the Sim Leader Program and even in my "},{"startTime":882.68,"endTime":888.32,"body":"doctoral work that the mentors I had during that  "},{"startTime":888.32,"endTime":893.44,"body":"in that I saw, well, there's maybe an opportunity. "},{"startTime":888.32,"endTime":893.44,"body":"Maybe I could be the one that one day oversaw the  "},{"startTime":893.44,"endTime":902.76,"body":"simulation program. Excellent. This  "},{"startTime":1075.08,"endTime":1080.72,"body":"community college got it and they were afraid "},{"startTime":1075.08,"endTime":1080.72,"body":"to take it out of the box because it was so  "},{"startTime":1080.72,"endTime":1086.72,"body":"expensive and I know that's how a lot of people "},{"startTime":1080.72,"endTime":1086.72,"body":"have started in simulation started and so took him  "},{"startTime":1086.72,"endTime":1092.2,"body":"out of the box set him on the bed, called Laerdal "},{"startTime":1086.72,"endTime":1092.2,"body":"and said - okay, can somebody tell me what I need  "},{"startTime":1092.2,"endTime":1099.32,"body":"to do to use it? And the next thing I know I'm "},{"startTime":1092.2,"endTime":1099.32,"body":"in love and I have a whole new career plan  "},{"startTime":1099.32,"endTime":1105.56,"body":"like simulation is going to be my life I could "},{"startTime":1099.32,"endTime":1105.56,"body":"tell. And so it it was just learning as I went  "},{"startTime":1105.56,"endTime":1111.44,"body":"and like I said I was at a little community college because of the things that I  "},{"startTime":1111.44,"endTime":1121.56,"body":"had been doing in simulation I was part of them "},{"startTime":1111.44,"endTime":1121.56,"body":"to developing and building a 100,000 square foot  "},{"startTime":1122.72,"endTime":1128.88,"body":"Health Professions and Athletic Center that had "},{"startTime":1122.72,"endTime":1128.88,"body":"probably a 30,000 square foot simulation center to  "},{"startTime":1128.88,"endTime":1137.96,"body":"it and I got to be the director of that and really "},{"startTime":1128.88,"endTime":1137.96,"body":"that that in addition to the NLN Sim Lead Program  "},{"startTime":1137.96,"endTime":1147.76,"body":"really said my career in a very different "},{"startTime":1137.96,"endTime":1147.76,"body":"path from there after the Sim Lead Program. I  "},{"startTime":1147.76,"endTime":1154.12,"body":"guess it was about two years after the Sim Lead "},{"startTime":1147.76,"endTime":1154.12,"body":"Program there were four of us in our cohort that  "},{"startTime":1154.12,"endTime":1159.76,"body":"really bonded and we were all from the state of "},{"startTime":1154.12,"endTime":1159.76,"body":"Maryland and so we started thinking about there  "},{"startTime":1159.76,"endTime":1167.08,"body":"needs to be a simulation consulting group."},{"startTime":1159.76,"endTime":1167.08,"body":"There are people that need information and so  "},{"startTime":1167.08,"endTime":1176.68,"body":"we still work together. Two of us actually built "},{"startTime":1167.08,"endTime":1176.68,"body":"and developed a simulation consulting firm,  "},{"startTime":1176.68,"endTime":1184.76,"body":"Simpl Simulation with Tonya Schneidereith from "},{"startTime":1176.68,"endTime":1184.76,"body":"the 2015 cohort and you know so that's one thing  "},{"startTime":1184.76,"endTime":1190.8,"body":"that I was able to do and and it's something "},{"startTime":1184.76,"endTime":1190.8,"body":"that I really enjoy and I get to reach out to  "},{"startTime":1190.8,"endTime":1197.36,"body":"all these different programs and help them with "},{"startTime":1190.8,"endTime":1197.36,"body":"their simulation and at the same time I guess  "},{"startTime":1197.36,"endTime":1203.88,"body":"it was about 2017 that this position came up at "},{"startTime":1197.36,"endTime":1203.88,"body":"GW to be the Simulation and Innovative Learning  "},{"startTime":1203.88,"endTime":1212.16,"body":"Center under the deanship of Pam Jeffries. "},{"startTime":1203.88,"endTime":1212.16,"body":"She was the Dean of GW at the time and so  "},{"startTime":1212.16,"endTime":1221.64,"body":"when I came on board there it was it has been an "},{"startTime":1212.16,"endTime":1221.64,"body":"amazing experience to learn from her. We built a,  "},{"startTime":1221.64,"endTime":1228.72,"body":"we renovated every ounce of simulation space in "},{"startTime":1221.64,"endTime":1228.72,"body":"this building so we now have 20,000 square feet  "},{"startTime":1228.72,"endTime":1240.52,"body":"about 18 beds an osce center, a really innovative "},{"startTime":1228.72,"endTime":1240.52,"body":"skills lab,and just in the last two years I  "},{"startTime":1240.52,"endTime":1246.52,"body":"have moved on to that leadership role to be the "},{"startTime":1240.52,"endTime":1246.52,"body":"associate dean of BSN program so it really it  "},{"startTime":1246.52,"endTime":1254.04,"body":"was all of the leadership and all of the you know "},{"startTime":1246.52,"endTime":1254.04,"body":"I learned different leadership styles and that's  "},{"startTime":1254.04,"endTime":1261.72,"body":"really, if I could have told my 2015 myself "},{"startTime":1254.04,"endTime":1261.72,"body":"that this is where I was going I would have  "},{"startTime":1261.72,"endTime":1269.32,"body":"never believed it. So and I can't wait to see what happens next. Oh my goodness, wow! So  "},{"startTime":1269.32,"endTime":1274.56,"body":"we have people that have become deans, people have "},{"startTime":1269.32,"endTime":1274.56,"body":"gotten research grants, even starting their own  "},{"startTime":1274.56,"endTime":1280.2,"body":"business, all of this since you've graduated. I just want to touch upon  "},{"startTime":1280.2,"endTime":1287.56,"body":"I've heard references to how this program has led "},{"startTime":1280.2,"endTime":1287.56,"body":"you to connect with other simulationists, how the  "},{"startTime":1287.56,"endTime":1293.84,"body":"networking has definitely helped with your career "},{"startTime":1287.56,"endTime":1293.84,"body":"trajectory. Can you tell me a little bit more or  "},{"startTime":1293.84,"endTime":1301.92,"body":"give examples of the power of that networking and "},{"startTime":1293.84,"endTime":1301.92,"body":"having these wonderful mentors how has that also  "},{"startTime":1301.92,"endTime":1311.08,"body":"enhanced your careers? I would say that networking "},{"startTime":1301.92,"endTime":1311.08,"body":"being able to actually be aware that there are  "},{"startTime":1311.08,"endTime":1316.92,"body":"other people out there walking the same path that "},{"startTime":1311.08,"endTime":1316.92,"body":"you are is huge. I think all of us  "},{"startTime":1316.92,"endTime":1323.8,"body":"have shared that we were kind of on our  own like areas and so knowing that you have  "},{"startTime":1323.8,"endTime":1329.32,"body":"other individuals that are doing the same things, "},{"startTime":1323.8,"endTime":1329.32,"body":"but they also connected us, like I said earlier,  "},{"startTime":1329.32,"endTime":1338.12,"body":"to simulation organizations like the NLN, INACSL, "},{"startTime":1329.32,"endTime":1338.12,"body":"and SSH, and encouraged or at least during my cohort"},{"startTime":1338.12,"endTime":1344.44,"body":"they were encouraging us to be involved in those "},{"startTime":1338.12,"endTime":1344.44,"body":"organizations because that helps you connect  "},{"startTime":1344.44,"endTime":1350.12,"body":"whether it's at conferences or there are"},{"startTime":1344.44,"endTime":1350.12,"body":"chats and discussion boards and podcasts  "},{"startTime":1350.12,"endTime":1356.64,"body":"such as this and that can also help build your "},{"startTime":1350.12,"endTime":1356.64,"body":"education. I mean, I became CHSE. I was in the first  "},{"startTime":1356.64,"endTime":1364.84,"body":"cohort that was CHSE certified. I'm CHSE-A so I mean "},{"startTime":1356.64,"endTime":1364.84,"body":"it opened the doors for that, but it for me too"},{"startTime":1364.84,"endTime":1370.64,"body":"also my involvement in those organizations led "},{"startTime":1364.84,"endTime":1370.64,"body":"to me being able to run for a board position on  "},{"startTime":1370.64,"endTime":1378.68,"body":"INACSL. Again, never would have imagined that, me, "},{"startTime":1370.64,"endTime":1378.68,"body":"like I'm doing that, you know, and   "},{"startTime":1378.68,"endTime":1384.56,"body":"again that just gave me so much knowledge "},{"startTime":1378.68,"endTime":1384.56,"body":"and insight. That experience was an amazing  "},{"startTime":1384.56,"endTime":1390.64,"body":"experience and even just having that opportunity. I "},{"startTime":1384.56,"endTime":1390.64,"body":"never would have had that opportunity if I hadn't  "},{"startTime":1390.64,"endTime":1402.4,"body":"had this foundation to build off of. Excellent."},{"startTime":1390.64,"endTime":1402.4,"body":"The 2015 cohort we were sort of  "},{"startTime":1402.4,"endTime":1412.44,"body":"a unique group. We don't know why, but we bonded "},{"startTime":1402.4,"endTime":1412.44,"body":"as a group in such a way that we have stayed so  "},{"startTime":1412.44,"endTime":1420.44,"body":"close that those the the group that was part of "},{"startTime":1412.44,"endTime":1420.44,"body":"our cohort are my best friends. I can still  "},{"startTime":1420.44,"endTime":1428.32,"body":"say that today that at least probably 10 of us do"},{"startTime":1420.44,"endTime":1428.32,"body":"things together all the time. Some of  "},{"startTime":1428.32,"endTime":1433.32,"body":"my colleagues will say when when they see me at "},{"startTime":1428.32,"endTime":1433.32,"body":"a conference like INACSL or she's with her sim  "},{"startTime":1433.32,"endTime":1438.72,"body":"sisters, like you see this entourage going from "},{"startTime":1433.32,"endTime":1438.72,"body":"session to session and the unique thing is"},{"startTime":1438.72,"endTime":1444.84,"body":"we'll go to different sessions and then come back "},{"startTime":1438.72,"endTime":1444.84,"body":"and talk about it together and we really support  "},{"startTime":1444.84,"endTime":1449.12,"body":"each other by you know calling on each other to "},{"startTime":1444.84,"endTime":1449.12,"body":"say, hey I'm having a problem with this. What are  "},{"startTime":1449.12,"endTime":1457.36,"body":"you guys doing? The network that we've created "},{"startTime":1449.12,"endTime":1457.36,"body":"and we bring, we welcome anybody else as  "},{"startTime":1457.36,"endTime":1462.64,"body":"the new sim lead cohort comes in. If we see them "},{"startTime":1457.36,"endTime":1462.64,"body":"and somebody says, hey, I know this, we just pull  "},{"startTime":1462.64,"endTime":1469.88,"body":"them in because we want to grow simulation and "},{"startTime":1462.64,"endTime":1469.88,"body":"that leadership so much and it has been fantastic  "},{"startTime":1469.88,"endTime":1476.76,"body":"we help each other with jobs and interviews and"},{"startTime":1469.88,"endTime":1476.76,"body":"you know writing articles and doing presentations  "},{"startTime":1476.76,"endTime":1483.24,"body":"and that networking has really led the group of "},{"startTime":1476.76,"endTime":1483.24,"body":"us to become such good leaders. That is beautiful  "},{"startTime":1483.24,"endTime":1488.32,"body":"to hear because one thing I do find being in the "},{"startTime":1483.24,"endTime":1488.32,"body":"simulation community we do support and look out  "},{"startTime":1488.32,"endTime":1492.52,"body":"for each other, which I love because you "},{"startTime":1488.32,"endTime":1492.52,"body":"don't, I don't know if I see that in a lot of the  "},{"startTime":1492.52,"endTime":1498.4,"body":"other organizations, that sense of community and "},{"startTime":1492.52,"endTime":1498.4,"body":"that connectiveness. So Dr. Thomas, I know you wanted to speak. I actually talk to more of of Crystel's  "},{"startTime":1520.36,"endTime":1525.24,"body":"cohort because I go to conferences and they're "},{"startTime":1520.36,"endTime":1525.24,"body":"all together, but the other thing with the NLN  "},{"startTime":1525.24,"endTime":1531.12,"body":"is you guys put together projects and then are "},{"startTime":1525.24,"endTime":1531.12,"body":"reaching out to the simulation leaders.   "},{"startTime":1531.12,"endTime":1535.52,"body":"In the beginning I was just like, do I have time "},{"startTime":1531.12,"endTime":1535.52,"body":"for this? Yes. I benefited from the other piece, let  "},{"startTime":1535.52,"endTime":1542.48,"body":"me volunteer and it again has opened up my world. "},{"startTime":1535.52,"endTime":1542.48,"body":"Some of the things that the NLN has given me an  "},{"startTime":1542.48,"endTime":1551.76,"body":"opportunity to do is work with NLN and Laerdal"},{"startTime":1542.48,"endTime":1551.76,"body":"and doing onsite faculty development for beginning  "},{"startTime":1551.76,"endTime":1557.32,"body":"simulationists that their struggles. That was"},{"startTime":1551.76,"endTime":1557.32,"body":"the biggest learning opportunity I ever did."},{"startTime":1557.32,"endTime":1563.08,"body":"Not only was I sharing but again talking to "},{"startTime":1557.32,"endTime":1563.08,"body":"people and the struggles that they were having.  "},{"startTime":1563.08,"endTime":1568.36,"body":"Some of them were unique and some of them are not "},{"startTime":1563.08,"endTime":1568.36,"body":"and you're again collaborating and reaching out  "},{"startTime":1568.36,"endTime":1576.44,"body":"doing some of the SIRC courses so helping review"},{"startTime":1568.36,"endTime":1576.44,"body":"them and revise them and do those type  "},{"startTime":1576.44,"endTime":1581.48,"body":"of things. All those projects forced me to go out "},{"startTime":1576.44,"endTime":1581.48,"body":"back into the literature. Now I've got a project. What are we going "},{"startTime":1581.48,"endTime":1586.04,"body":"to do about that, so again it really helped"},{"startTime":1586.04,"endTime":1591.36,"body":"continue with my growth afterwards related to the "},{"startTime":1586.04,"endTime":1591.36,"body":"projects and collaborations and I didn't do that  "},{"startTime":1591.36,"endTime":1597.16,"body":"alone. You guys reach out to everybody. I will say this too. So I think, you know, go for it.
