I'm the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs in "},{"startTime":69.76,"endTime":76.56,"body":"the College of Nursing. Our goal today is  "},{"startTime":76.56,"endTime":84.0,"body":"really to come together to start the conversation "},{"startTime":76.56,"endTime":84.0,"body":"about English language learners. We all have them  "},{"startTime":84.0,"endTime":89.92,"body":"and we've been noticing some trends and we want "},{"startTime":84.0,"endTime":89.92,"body":"to share those trends with you all today and   "},{"startTime":89.92,"endTime":95.36,"body":"hopefully at the end we'll share some contact "},{"startTime":89.92,"endTime":95.36,"body":"information to start crowdsourcing or thinking  "},{"startTime":95.36,"endTime":103.12,"body":"about this together because this affects all of "},{"startTime":95.36,"endTime":103.12,"body":"us as we prepare future nurses or future advanced  "},{"startTime":103.12,"endTime":110.44,"body":"practice nurses. So we don't have the answers, but "},{"startTime":103.12,"endTime":110.44,"body":"we hope we can get to that point soon. We come  "},{"startTime":110.44,"endTime":117.6,"body":"from a midsize private, nonprofit Jesuit university "},{"startTime":110.44,"endTime":117.6,"body":"in the Midwest. We have about 8,000 undergraduate  "},{"startTime":117.6,"endTime":124.24,"body":"students and I'm kind of buffering that and "},{"startTime":117.6,"endTime":124.24,"body":"we have about 4,000 graduate students in our  "},{"startTime":124.24,"endTime":130.72,"body":"university. A majority of our undergrads do come "},{"startTime":124.24,"endTime":130.72,"body":"from public high schools from surrounding states.  "},{"startTime":130.72,"endTime":137.6,"body":"We get a lot from the surrounding area but we do "},{"startTime":130.72,"endTime":137.6,"body":"get the different coasts of students and with our  "},{"startTime":137.6,"endTime":146.4,"body":"students majority white institution we do have 34% "},{"startTime":137.6,"endTime":146.4,"body":"in our last year statistics for students of color.  "},{"startTime":146.4,"endTime":154.0,"body":"Since 2016 we've been working towards "},{"startTime":146.4,"endTime":154.0,"body":"the Hispanic Serving Institution, HSI, status and  "},{"startTime":154.0,"endTime":160.44,"body":"when we made that commitment back in 2016, which "},{"startTime":154.0,"endTime":160.44,"body":"sounds forever ago, we were at 9.7% of students  "},{"startTime":160.44,"endTime":168.48,"body":"that identified Hispanic, Latina, Latino, Latinx, and "},{"startTime":160.44,"endTime":168.48,"body":"currently we're at 15% so slowly making progress.  "},{"startTime":168.48,"endTime":172.48,"body":"I know that everyone on the podcast today "},{"startTime":168.48,"endTime":172.48,"body":"is going to talk a little bit about that here  "},{"startTime":172.48,"endTime":180.88,"body":"and there and this matters to nursing because we "},{"startTime":172.48,"endTime":180.88,"body":"all know that the United States the demographics  "},{"startTime":180.88,"endTime":187.6,"body":"are constantly changing. We want to put out "},{"startTime":180.88,"endTime":187.6,"body":"professionals that look like the populations  "},{"startTime":187.6,"endTime":195.2,"body":"they're going to serve and that also includes "},{"startTime":187.6,"endTime":195.2,"body":"language. This is definitely essential  "},{"startTime":195.2,"endTime":200.6,"body":"to help grow the nursing profession to better care "},{"startTime":195.2,"endTime":200.6,"body":"for those that we're going to experience no matter  "},{"startTime":200.6,"endTime":206.92,"body":"where our students go out and practice and be "},{"startTime":200.6,"endTime":206.92,"body":"the difference. So let's start off. Julie, can you  "},{"startTime":206.92,"endTime":212.92,"body":"start us by talking about what you been noticing "},{"startTime":206.92,"endTime":212.92,"body":"with our undergraduate students and then maybe we  "},{"startTime":212.92,"endTime":218.8,"body":"can go to Taylor and and Maria? What we've been "},{"startTime":212.92,"endTime":218.8,"body":"noticing, that sounds great. Thanks Amber. So  "},{"startTime":218.8,"endTime":225.0,"body":"as a team of student support professionals we're "},{"startTime":218.8,"endTime":225.0,"body":"really very much on the ground with students.   "},{"startTime":225.0,"endTime":232.4,"body":"We're hearing what their experience are at the "},{"startTime":225.0,"endTime":232.4,"body":"university. We are kind of go-to resources for  "},{"startTime":232.4,"endTime":238.52,"body":"students that are here in the nursing program and "},{"startTime":232.4,"endTime":238.52,"body":"so what we really started to notice and this is  "},{"startTime":238.52,"endTime":245.96,"body":"more anecdotally than anything, we'll get into the "},{"startTime":238.52,"endTime":245.96,"body":"data and how that is in some ways problematic in a  "},{"startTime":245.96,"endTime":253.44,"body":"bit. But anecdotally speaking we're noticing more "},{"startTime":245.96,"endTime":253.44,"body":"of an influx of multilingual learners. So we're  "},{"startTime":253.44,"endTime":259.92,"body":"hearing from students as well as from faculty "},{"startTime":253.44,"endTime":259.92,"body":"that there is more of a need for support for  "},{"startTime":259.92,"endTime":268.2,"body":"our students whose language may not be English "},{"startTime":259.92,"endTime":268.2,"body":"as a first language. What we've really  "},{"startTime":268.2,"endTime":275.76,"body":"kind of learned is that we don't really "},{"startTime":268.2,"endTime":275.76,"body":"have a cohesive plan to support our multilingual  "},{"startTime":275.76,"endTime":284.4,"body":"learners at the college level especially and so "},{"startTime":275.76,"endTime":284.4,"body":"our approach really has been on an individual  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":284.4,"endTime":290.16,"body":"what do we know about each student, "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":284.4,"endTime":290.16,"body":"what does each student share with us, what are hear, "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":290.16,"endTime":296.6,"body":"what are we hearing from faculty, and then kind of "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":290.16,"endTime":296.6,"body":"approaching it from that kind of individualistic  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":296.6,"endTime":306.48,"body":"standpoint and kind of figuring out as a rather "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":296.6,"endTime":306.48,"body":"solo college or department on a larger campus.  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":306.48,"endTime":314.24,"body":"Well, what are the resources outside of our "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":306.48,"endTime":314.24,"body":"walls, right? And so what we've really started  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":314.24,"endTime":320.76,"body":"to learn and see is that we really need to get "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":314.24,"endTime":320.76,"body":"a cohesive plan in place to figure out what those  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":320.76,"endTime":326.92,"body":"resources are and make it really streamlined and "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":320.76,"endTime":326.92,"body":"easy and less of a bulky process for students to  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":326.92,"endTime":333.72,"body":"find the support that they need. Right, right. What "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":326.92,"endTime":333.72,"body":"about you Taylor at the graduate student level? "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":333.72,"endTime":340.88,"body":"What have you been noticing? Yeah, thank you.  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":333.72,"endTime":340.88,"body":"We have been finding that the data just really  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":340.88,"endTime":350.2,"body":"isn't there for graduate students and so I think "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":340.88,"endTime":350.2,"body":"that that is fairly common among graduate and  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":350.2,"endTime":359.88,"body":"professional programs that often times that "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":350.2,"endTime":359.88,"body":"as students have progressed and are now in a  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":359.88,"endTime":368.4,"body":"graduate program there's this assumption that if "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":359.88,"endTime":368.4,"body":"they did it once they know how to do grad school. "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":368.4,"endTime":377.12,"body":"Yeah. And that is just untrue, especially "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":368.4,"endTime":377.12,"body":"for our English language learners or English  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":377.12,"endTime":383.44,"body":"as second language students. Oftentimes, it's not "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":377.12,"endTime":383.44,"body":"just a second language it might be a third and  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":383.44,"endTime":390.8,"body":"a fourth language so what we were doing was just "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":383.44,"endTime":390.8,"body":"kind getting pretty curious and doing some digging  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":390.8,"endTime":400.0,"body":"on what what is actually in play currently some of "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":390.8,"endTime":400.0,"body":"the questions that we asked ourselves too during  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":400.0,"endTime":406.96,"body":"these interactions with students interactions with "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":400.0,"endTime":406.96,"body":"our fellow colleagues was do students feel safe to  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":406.96,"endTime":414.88,"body":"share when they are multilingual learners? When is "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":406.96,"endTime":414.88,"body":"the appropriate time to ask that question? Are we  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":414.88,"endTime":423.08,"body":"reaching out to the right students at the right "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":414.88,"endTime":423.08,"body":"time? So kind of riffing a little bit on what  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":423.08,"endTime":432.56,"body":"Julie had mentioned in terms of data collection, we "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":423.08,"endTime":432.56,"body":"realized that while undergraduate student data has  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":432.56,"endTime":443.76,"body":"been collected at the application level and during "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":432.56,"endTime":443.76,"body":"a first year first survey type of all-encompassing  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":443.76,"endTime":451.84,"body":"undergraduate data collection, the data for "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":443.76,"endTime":451.84,"body":"graduate students hasn't been collected  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":451.84,"endTime":460.28,"body":"in that way. A lot of it is, to Julie's point, if "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":451.84,"endTime":460.28,"body":"folks are reaching out they're having concerns  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":460.28,"endTime":470.24,"body":"they're having issues. The Faculty are feeling "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":460.28,"endTime":470.24,"body":"unprepared or perhaps under-resourced or so the  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":470.24,"endTime":478.68,"body":"the similar level of support that perhaps they "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":470.24,"endTime":478.68,"body":"may have received an undergrad prior to coming  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":478.68,"endTime":488.16,"body":"to our institution that might also be a disconnect. "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":478.68,"endTime":488.16,"body":"So through student engagement,  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":488.16,"endTime":497.68,"body":"student data, we know that as an transformational "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":488.16,"endTime":497.68,"body":"institution we're maybe not living up to our  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":497.68,"endTime":506.76,"body":"goals. We might be dropping the ball a little "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":497.68,"endTime":506.76,"body":"bit in the last 10 years or or longer. There  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":506.76,"endTime":513.84,"body":"was that element that when you do think about HSI "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":506.76,"endTime":513.84,"body":"and you read on HSI that serving - this word  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":513.84,"endTime":521.4,"body":"comes up - and you know you're making me think about "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":513.84,"endTime":521.4,"body":"that. Is that serving-ness there? And maybe  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":521.4,"endTime":531.08,"body":"not quite, not yet. If we use growth mindset terms "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":521.4,"endTime":531.08,"body":"not yet. So Maria, you're in a newer role  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":531.08,"endTime":536.8,"body":"within our college as an academic coach working "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":531.08,"endTime":536.8,"body":"really closely with student success but"},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":536.8,"endTime":543.56,"body":"you're kind of, your thing too in work working "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":536.8,"endTime":543.56,"body":"with students, what have you noticed to kind of  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":544.2,"endTime":550.8,"body":"contribute to what Julie and Taylor have also been "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":544.2,"endTime":550.8,"body":"noticing with our undergrad and grad students with  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":550.8,"endTime":562.52,"body":"English language learner students? Yeah, I think the "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":550.8,"endTime":562.52,"body":"first thing that I've noticed is in this new role  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":563.04,"endTime":568.92,"body":"you know formerly a full-time faculty role and the "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":563.04,"endTime":568.92,"body":"first thing that struck me when I switched into  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":568.92,"endTime":572.68,"body":"this academic coaching role which is much more "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":568.92,"endTime":572.68,"body":"comprised of one-on-one student interactions  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":572.68,"endTime":578.28,"body":"and really deep relationship building with "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":572.68,"endTime":578.28,"body":"students and with small groups of students was how  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":578.28,"endTime":585.2,"body":"many of our students are multilingual and honestly "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":578.28,"endTime":585.2,"body":"it shocked me. I think that was something that I  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":585.2,"endTime":592.84,"body":"totally missed. It was not on my radar in the classroom "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":585.2,"endTime":592.84,"body":"at all, which makes sense. I think we see  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":592.84,"endTime":597.16,"body":"growing trends of more multilingual students in "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":592.84,"endTime":597.16,"body":"our institution but it also makes me wonder how  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":597.16,"endTime":603.2,"body":"much was I missing when I was in the classroom "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":597.16,"endTime":603.2,"body":"because a multilingual learner you know and that  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":603.2,"endTime":608.68,"body":"experience is individual and complex but they "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":603.2,"endTime":608.68,"body":"can  present in the classroom as a student  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":608.68,"endTime":614.92,"body":"who maybe is ill-prepared if they don't...if they're "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":608.68,"endTime":614.92,"body":"not ready to answer questions as quickly as their  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":614.92,"endTime":622.0,"body":"peers. They can present as a student "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":614.92,"endTime":622.0,"body":"who's just not getting it which certainly is not  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":622.0,"endTime":628.52,"body":"always the case, but that was the first thing that "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":622.0,"endTime":628.52,"body":"struck me. The second thing that struck me kind of  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":628.52,"endTime":634.2,"body":"as I'm building these individual relationships "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":628.52,"endTime":634.2,"body":"it's just how diverse the experience is  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":634.2,"endTime":642.92,"body":"for multilingual learners. It's not a one-size "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":634.2,"endTime":642.92,"body":"fits-all. I have plenty of students who feel  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":642.92,"endTime":648.16,"body":"that it affects their academic performance "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":642.92,"endTime":648.16,"body":"or their academic experience but they're  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":648.16,"endTime":652.96,"body":"not necessarily struggling in their coursework or "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":648.16,"endTime":652.96,"body":"they haven't identified that being a multilingual  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":652.96,"endTime":660.52,"body":"learner is a struggle. And then I have students "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":652.96,"endTime":660.52,"body":"who certainly are identifying like, yes, I know  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":660.52,"endTime":668.8,"body":"that this is impacting my academic performance so "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":660.52,"endTime":668.8,"body":"definitely not a one-size fits-all. I think big  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":668.8,"endTime":675.16,"body":"picture the thing that I think about is "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":668.8,"endTime":675.16,"body":"we do want to be a transformational institution.  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":675.88,"endTime":682.72,"body":"We're thinking a lot about inclusive course design "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":675.88,"endTime":682.72,"body":"and inclusive, transparent course design  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":682.72,"endTime":689.48,"body":"and these are conversations that we've been "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":682.72,"endTime":689.48,"body":"having for years and once I started identifying  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":689.48,"endTime":694.24,"body":"that I'm seeing many more learners who are "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":689.48,"endTime":694.24,"body":"multilingual, who are English language learners  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":694.24,"endTime":702.72,"body":"like where do they show up in that process is "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":694.24,"endTime":702.72,"body":"kind of the big question in my head. I could spend  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":702.72,"endTime":707.68,"body":"a whole podcast just on transparent design. For "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":702.72,"endTime":707.68,"body":"those of you listening that aren't sure what  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":707.68,"endTime":714.92,"body":"that actually is, transparent design is a framework developed"},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":707.68,"endTime":714.92,"body":"by Mary-Ann Winkelmes,  Suzanne Tapp, and Allison"},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":714.92,"endTime":721.08,"body":"Boye. But transparent design is about giving "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":714.92,"endTime":721.08,"body":"students the purpose of what you're having them  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":721.08,"endTime":728.56,"body":"do, what knowledge are they going to gain from that "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":721.08,"endTime":728.56,"body":"activity, and then specific tasks that they need  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":728.56,"endTime":734.36,"body":"to work through. And a task could be - be frustrated, "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":728.56,"endTime":734.36,"body":"struggle with this, and then the criteria in which  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":734.36,"endTime":740.24,"body":"they're going to be assessed. It really "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":734.36,"endTime":740.24,"body":"levels the playing field for all students when  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":740.24,"endTime":745.44,"body":"they don't have to spend so much time and effort "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":740.24,"endTime":745.44,"body":"trying to figure out - what is it that my professor  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":745.44,"endTime":751.2,"body":"wants from me? So there's a little side note on "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":745.44,"endTime":751.2,"body":"transparent design. But I think that funnels nicely  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":751.2,"endTime":757.76,"body":"into this conversation though and so that's kind "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":751.2,"endTime":757.76,"body":"of the what behind what we've been noticing  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":757.76,"endTime":764.88,"body":"at our institution. So let's get into maybe some of "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":757.76,"endTime":764.88,"body":"the \"so what.\" Why does this matter? So Julie, what do  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":764.88,"endTime":772.0,"body":"you thinking about and why this all matters, why "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":764.88,"endTime":772.0,"body":"do we need to be spending time on multilingual  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":772.0,"endTime":777.68,"body":"learners or English language learners? I think "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":772.0,"endTime":777.68,"body":"that's really the question at the root  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":777.68,"endTime":785.6,"body":"of this, right.  think that that involves "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":777.68,"endTime":785.6,"body":"such a cultural shift of the mindset that we tend  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":785.6,"endTime":793.8,"body":"to have in higher ed, which is students are "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":785.6,"endTime":793.8,"body":"accepted to our higher ed institution, they need  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":793.8,"endTime":805.36,"body":"to be coming with the equipment and the knowledge "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":793.8,"endTime":805.36,"body":"and the the tools to be successful rather than the  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":805.36,"endTime":811.12,"body":"mindset of - what can we do to be supplying those "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":805.36,"endTime":811.12,"body":"things for our students? How can we build  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":811.12,"endTime":817.76,"body":"structures into place so that students are not "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":811.12,"endTime":817.76,"body":"floundering and trying to figure this out on their  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":817.76,"endTime":829.64,"body":"own? So when we talk about being an emerging "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":817.76,"endTime":829.64,"body":"HSI that's a wonderful, wonderful goal. I love that  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":829.64,"endTime":838.12,"body":"we are pursuing the HSI status at our institution, "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":829.64,"endTime":838.12,"body":"but I think the tougher part outside of recruiting  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":838.12,"endTime":843.28,"body":"those students and having those students come "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":838.12,"endTime":843.28,"body":"to our institution is really supporting  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":843.28,"endTime":851.44,"body":"those students. Giving the opportunity "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":843.28,"endTime":851.44,"body":"without the resources in place for them to really  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":851.44,"endTime":859.0,"body":"succeed, it's not it's not quite fair. So we need to"},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":851.44,"endTime":859.0,"body":"just kind of raise that bar for ourselves  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":859.0,"endTime":867.36,"body":"I think and really walk the walk by having those "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":859.0,"endTime":867.36,"body":"kind of robust support services in place for our  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":867.36,"endTime":876.48,"body":"students. At the  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1061.32,"endTime":1070.28,"body":"same time, we were doing kind of outreach "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1061.32,"endTime":1070.28,"body":"to colleagues. So in combination of reaching out  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1070.28,"endTime":1077.92,"body":"to my grad school colleagues, my fellow "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1070.28,"endTime":1077.92,"body":"student success colleagues that work with graduate  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1077.92,"endTime":1088.8,"body":"students, we realized that a lot of information was "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1077.92,"endTime":1088.8,"body":"sort of owned in house or collected in a silo and  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1088.8,"endTime":1101.8,"body":"so that's number one a huge area of the \"so what\" "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1088.8,"endTime":1101.8,"body":"is how do we foster and create and sustain student  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1101.8,"endTime":1110.72,"body":"success resources if we're all doing it in kind "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1101.8,"endTime":1110.72,"body":"of micro doing student success? So how do  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1110.72,"endTime":1118.92,"body":"we prepare and provide student success strategies "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1110.72,"endTime":1118.92,"body":"and resources at a larger institutional level if  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1118.92,"endTime":1125.64,"body":"that information never really gets there or isn't "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1118.92,"endTime":1125.64,"body":"really available so that's kind of number one. The  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1125.64,"endTime":1131.88,"body":"second piece is through the lit review. "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1125.64,"endTime":1131.88,"body":"We're seeing a lot of literature recommend or  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1131.88,"endTime":1142.12,"body":"or suggested that we put that full force of "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1131.88,"endTime":1142.12,"body":"accommodations behind accommodations of all kinds."},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1142.12,"endTime":1156.56,"body":"So not only for testing anxiety, not only for "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1142.12,"endTime":1156.56,"body":"other types of mobility restrictions and  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1156.56,"endTime":1162.08,"body":"providing that resource to students who "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1156.56,"endTime":1162.08,"body":"are English language learners. I think this ties  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1162.08,"endTime":1167.72,"body":"really closely to what Julia is saying that we "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1162.08,"endTime":1167.72,"body":"need to embrace the students that are here and  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1167.72,"endTime":1175.32,"body":"we need to feel really, really the gratitude that "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1167.72,"endTime":1175.32,"body":"they chose us not the opposite way where we're  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1175.32,"endTime":1181.48,"body":"asking them just kind of jam yourself into "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1175.32,"endTime":1181.48,"body":"this T, this mold that we have I think  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1181.48,"endTime":1187.76,"body":"higher ed in general has been perpetuating for "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1181.48,"endTime":1187.76,"body":"many, many years. For example, when students come  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1187.76,"endTime":1193.04,"body":"to us like I mentioned with a previous degree we "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1187.76,"endTime":1193.04,"body":"don't know what kind of support that they've been  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1193.04,"endTime":1198.64,"body":"provided at other institutions. It might have "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1193.04,"endTime":1198.64,"body":"been really robust. It might have been really  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1199.68,"endTime":1210.48,"body":"poor, you know poorly done, so when English "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1199.68,"endTime":1210.48,"body":"language learners receive referrals to  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1210.48,"endTime":1220.08,"body":"disability support services or to other type of "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1210.48,"endTime":1220.08,"body":"offices that offer accommodations it can  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1220.08,"endTime":1228.64,"body":"feel insufficient. And what's the message that "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1220.08,"endTime":1228.64,"body":"we're sending to our English language learners  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1231.08,"endTime":1238.8,"body":"in rather than identifying accommodations "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1231.08,"endTime":1238.8,"body":"exclusively through something like a disability  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1238.8,"endTime":1247.48,"body":"services or support services the opportunity "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1238.8,"endTime":1247.48,"body":"to sort of approach accommodations in a truly  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1247.48,"endTime":1253.8,"body":"holistic way? And that's what really ties to "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1247.48,"endTime":1253.8,"body":"then the other piece of why is  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1253.8,"endTime":1262.04,"body":"this important. We are a Jesuit institution. We "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1253.8,"endTime":1262.04,"body":"committed to caring for the whole person through  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1262.04,"endTime":1271.0,"body":"our commitment to cura personalis. This must "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1262.04,"endTime":1271.0,"body":"include celebrating lived wisdom, differences, and  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1271.0,"endTime":1279.28,"body":"approaching those differences as an asset. So not "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1271.0,"endTime":1279.28,"body":"only encouraging and providing accommodations but  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1279.28,"endTime":1288.76,"body":"understanding that we should foster that pride in "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1279.28,"endTime":1288.76,"body":"multilingualism that in order to reach that goal  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1288.76,"endTime":1297.6,"body":"we really need to examine the referral process, "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1288.76,"endTime":1297.6,"body":"how things are communicated, and that perception of  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1297.6,"endTime":1304.32,"body":"what are accommodations for, who are accommodations "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1297.6,"endTime":1304.32,"body":"for because for a very long time, there's there's  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1304.32,"endTime":1312.52,"body":"been a stigma and is that necessary and is "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1304.32,"endTime":1312.52,"body":"that direction that we want to be moving?   "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1312.52,"endTime":1318.8,"body":"Right. The point you made about you know"},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1312.52,"endTime":1318.8,"body":"we're forcing students into our mold  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1318.8,"endTime":1324.0,"body":"and we're doing that not only in higher ed "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1318.8,"endTime":1324.0,"body":"because I do agree with you, but also in the  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1324.0,"endTime":1330.08,"body":"nursing profession. Taylor, at one point you "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1324.0,"endTime":1330.08,"body":"shared with me the word like professional or "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1330.08,"endTime":1336.16,"body":"professionalism is rooted in white supremacy. "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1330.08,"endTime":1336.16,"body":"We have to think about what is that and  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1336.16,"endTime":1344.16,"body":"when we think about the nursing profession how "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1336.16,"endTime":1344.16,"body":"are we helping to support students to be their  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1344.16,"endTime":1350.0,"body":"authentic selves out in practice to be the best "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1344.16,"endTime":1350.0,"body":"nurses they can? And Maria I think you know do  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1350.0,"endTime":1354.68,"body":"you want to share a little bit about kind of your "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1350.0,"endTime":1354.68,"body":"\"so what\" of getting students out like what are you  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1354.68,"endTime":1361.2,"body":"thinking about getting them out into practice?  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1354.68,"endTime":1361.2,"body":"I mean, I think you said it really well but I  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1362.0,"endTime":1370.28,"body":"was a practicing nurse and nurse practitioner "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1362.0,"endTime":1370.28,"body":"working in the hospital. As always with  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1370.28,"endTime":1375.2,"body":"pre-professional education for and professional "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1370.28,"endTime":1375.2,"body":"education for nursing students, like there is that  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1375.2,"endTime":1380.8,"body":"other stakeholder and I'm thinking about that "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1375.2,"endTime":1380.8,"body":"when I'm seeing patients because this this is  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1380.8,"endTime":1387.48,"body":"not just...and of course it is do the right "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1380.8,"endTime":1387.48,"body":"thing by our students and as educators that  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1387.48,"endTime":1394.8,"body":"is front of mind, right, and I'm thinking about a "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1387.48,"endTime":1394.8,"body":"student that Taylor and I shared who multilingual  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1394.8,"endTime":1403.68,"body":"learner and just brilliant and was referred out "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1394.8,"endTime":1403.68,"body":"to to Disability Services for accommodations and  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1403.68,"endTime":1409.52,"body":"she you know wisely drew issue with that and "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1403.68,"endTime":1409.52,"body":"and said in no uncertain terms, I wonder  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1409.52,"endTime":1414.08,"body":"if we could perhaps do a little better here. But "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1409.52,"endTime":1414.08,"body":"I think she was really a catalyst for us to   "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1414.08,"endTime":1419.48,"body":"start thinking about doing the right thing. As a "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1414.08,"endTime":1419.48,"body":"team we had a lot of conversations around that.  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1419.48,"endTime":1426.36,"body":"So yes, 100% there is that level and then also what "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1419.48,"endTime":1426.36,"body":"about this other stakeholder which is our patients  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1426.36,"endTime":1433.04,"body":"and their families and the communities that we "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1426.36,"endTime":1433.04,"body":"serve and their health outcomes because we know  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1433.04,"endTime":1438.96,"body":"while the research around how do we best support "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1433.04,"endTime":1438.96,"body":"multilingual learners, English language learners  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1438.96,"endTime":1444.36,"body":"is somewhat limited and certainly limited when "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1438.96,"endTime":1444.36,"body":"it comes to nursing education. The research  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1444.36,"endTime":1449.28,"body":"is not limited when it comes to the difference "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1444.36,"endTime":1449.28,"body":"it makes for patients families communities in  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1449.28,"endTime":1457.32,"body":"terms of having clinicians who look like you and "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1449.28,"endTime":1457.32,"body":"yes who speak the language so yeah that's  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1457.32,"endTime":1461.68,"body":"definitely always back of mind and sometimes "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1457.32,"endTime":1461.68,"body":"front of mind if I'm if I'm out there seeing  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1461.68,"endTime":1468.52,"body":"patients. This is...there's layers to this "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1461.68,"endTime":1468.52,"body":"and it really does matter. Yeah Yeah. Taylor mentioned earlier that some of the  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1560.92,"endTime":1567.32,"body":"data that is out there is a little bit siloed "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1560.92,"endTime":1567.32,"body":"and on the undergraduate side kind of self-  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1567.32,"endTime":1575.36,"body":"indicating that you are a multilanguage learner "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1567.32,"endTime":1575.36,"body":"upon application has a lot of implications around  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1575.36,"endTime":1581.12,"body":"trust in a university or an institution "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1575.36,"endTime":1581.12,"body":"as well as kind of how is this going to be  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1581.12,"endTime":1588.4,"body":"perceived as I'm applying to this institution."},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1581.12,"endTime":1588.4,"body":"We're hoping that with our students and in a way  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1588.4,"endTime":1594.36,"body":"that's presented from the student services student "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1588.4,"endTime":1594.36,"body":"success team that that might be a really trusted  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1594.36,"endTime":1600.28,"body":"engagement and a good way for students to feel "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1594.36,"endTime":1600.28,"body":"comfortable sharing with us if we are sending  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1600.28,"endTime":1606.48,"body":"them kind of our own survey. And through that I was able to work "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1815.6,"endTime":1823.6,"body":"with our graduate school and our colleagues  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1823.6,"endTime":1832.12,"body":"and we have actually changed our application so "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1823.6,"endTime":1832.12,"body":"our graduate school application now rather than  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1832.12,"endTime":1841.28,"body":"asking the question upon application we ask in "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1832.12,"endTime":1841.28,"body":"an optional way is the, 'do you identify as an  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1841.28,"endTime":1850.08,"body":"English language learner or ESL student?' once they "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1841.28,"endTime":1850.08,"body":"are able to accept their offer of admission. That's  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1850.08,"endTime":1856.28,"body":"one of the questions that they can answer so we "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1850.08,"endTime":1856.28,"body":"try to remove some of that, you know, possible what  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1856.28,"endTime":1861.68,"body":"are you going to use this for? Why do you want to "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1856.28,"endTime":1861.68,"body":"know? Is this something that you're going to help  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1861.68,"endTime":1868.36,"body":"help me and help celebrate or am I going to be "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1861.68,"endTime":1868.36,"body":"tokenized, right? We are now starting to collect the data "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1876.36,"endTime":1884.84,"body":"of students who identify and choose to identify  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1884.84,"endTime":1892.0,"body":"with us as English language learners. That's a huge "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1884.84,"endTime":1892.0,"body":"step forward. In addition to that we absolutely  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1892.0,"endTime":1900.72,"body":"need to collaborate. So this is me giving all of "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1892.0,"endTime":1900.72,"body":"you listeners the opportunity to let us know what  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1900.72,"endTime":1907.68,"body":"has been successful, what are things that you see "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1900.72,"endTime":1907.68,"body":"as aspirational or that you have always wanted to  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1907.68,"endTime":1914.72,"body":"do and think that could be really beneficial but "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1907.68,"endTime":1914.72,"body":"you also are looking for the data or the you know  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1914.72,"endTime":1923.48,"body":"the literature or the verified tools. There are "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1914.72,"endTime":1923.48,"body":"so many ways that we can work together and the  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1923.48,"endTime":1930.68,"body":"opportunity to connect across our own campuses "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1923.48,"endTime":1930.68,"body":"but truly just across the profession. We see  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1930.68,"endTime":1939.32,"body":"such a deep desire to do better and to serve our "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1930.68,"endTime":1939.32,"body":"students better and are sort of you know feeling  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1939.32,"endTime":1947.84,"body":"the rub between helping individual students in "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1939.32,"endTime":1947.84,"body":"the moment and moving our institutions forward  "},{"speaker":"basis","startTime":1948.56,"endTime":1958.04,"body":"with our goals in mind.
