She's  "},{"startTime":65.2,"endTime":72.68,"body":"currently the director of the University of Kansas "},{"startTime":65.2,"endTime":72.68,"body":"School of Nursing Simulation Center and she is a  "},{"startTime":72.68,"endTime":80.16,"body":"clinical associate professor of the same program "},{"startTime":72.68,"endTime":80.16,"body":"as well. She had published and presented various  "},{"startTime":80.16,"endTime":87.76,"body":"works in nursing education such as a clinical "},{"startTime":80.16,"endTime":87.76,"body":"judgment, nurse educator competencies, and currently  "},{"startTime":87.76,"endTime":95.0,"body":"also a several projects on competency based "},{"startTime":87.76,"endTime":95.0,"body":"education. But I really admire Laura's fashion  "},{"startTime":95.0,"endTime":103.64,"body":"and work in simulation education. More recently, "},{"startTime":95.0,"endTime":103.64,"body":"the work that was acknowledged by the Clinical  "},{"startTime":103.64,"endTime":112.84,"body":"Simulation in Nursing journal as article of the "},{"startTime":103.64,"endTime":112.84,"body":"year in 2023 was that work on transferability  "},{"startTime":112.84,"endTime":119.64,"body":"of clinical judgments learned via simulations "},{"startTime":112.84,"endTime":119.64,"body":"in the classroom to clinicals. Yeah, that's right.  "},{"startTime":119.64,"endTime":125.44,"body":"The transability of that to their actual clinical "},{"startTime":119.64,"endTime":125.44,"body":"practice. Right. So there is so much to talk about  "},{"startTime":125.44,"endTime":133.48,"body":"in nursing education and simulations today but I "},{"startTime":125.44,"endTime":133.48,"body":"am very interested to learn and I'm sure many of  "},{"startTime":133.48,"endTime":140.28,"body":"you are as well, our listeners, about initiatives "},{"startTime":133.48,"endTime":140.28,"body":"in operationalizing competency based education  "},{"startTime":140.28,"endTime":147.4,"body":"in curriculum and nursing programs such as the "},{"startTime":140.28,"endTime":147.4,"body":"one Laura and I will talk about today. Right.  "},{"startTime":155.76,"endTime":163.08,"body":"Yeah. So yeah. So the nursing education has so "},{"startTime":155.76,"endTime":163.08,"body":"many questions on how to implement competency  "},{"startTime":163.08,"endTime":170.76,"body":"based education and of course the 2021 AACN "},{"startTime":163.08,"endTime":170.76,"body":"Essentials so I would start with with these  "},{"startTime":170.76,"endTime":178.92,"body":"questions. So what projects or initiatives have "},{"startTime":170.76,"endTime":178.92,"body":"you implemented in your nursing program and what  "},{"startTime":178.92,"endTime":184.76,"body":"were your reasons for doing so. Well, other "},{"startTime":178.92,"endTime":184.76,"body":"than we know it's the 2021. Yeah. Other than we  "},{"startTime":184.76,"endTime":190.76,"body":"need to. Right. We need to do. Right. Yeah, well thank "},{"startTime":184.76,"endTime":190.76,"body":"you so much and I like I said, I really appreciate  "},{"startTime":190.76,"endTime":197.44,"body":"being here. I could talk forever on these topics "},{"startTime":190.76,"endTime":197.44,"body":"as you know as well. So one of the things to your  "},{"startTime":197.44,"endTime":202.2,"body":"question that we really have been working on "},{"startTime":197.44,"endTime":202.2,"body":"and implementing as a new initiative here at  "},{"startTime":202.2,"endTime":209.44,"body":"the university, the KU School of Nursing, is "},{"startTime":202.2,"endTime":209.44,"body":"we did see the need to increase the presence of  "},{"startTime":209.44,"endTime":216.76,"body":"competency based education and competency based "},{"startTime":209.44,"endTime":216.76,"body":"evaluation within our simulation curriculum. And  "},{"startTime":216.76,"endTime":224.88,"body":"again, like you said, all based on that 2021 AACN "},{"startTime":216.76,"endTime":224.88,"body":"Essentials and saw specifically the SimZones  "},{"startTime":224.88,"endTime":234.28,"body":"approach as the perfect theoretical framework in "},{"startTime":224.88,"endTime":234.28,"body":"which to do it. So last spring, spring of 24 ,we implemented  "},{"startTime":234.28,"endTime":240.04,"body":"for the very first time in our curriculum "},{"startTime":234.28,"endTime":240.04,"body":"and specifically in our sim curriculum, the  "},{"startTime":240.04,"endTime":246.52,"body":"SimZone's approach to competency based evaluation "},{"startTime":240.04,"endTime":246.52,"body":"through an SOCE, so an objective structured clinical  "},{"startTime":246.52,"endTime":251.08,"body":"examination for our third year students at "},{"startTime":246.52,"endTime":251.08,"body":"the end of the, at the end of the semester, at  "},{"startTime":251.08,"endTime":259.6,"body":"the end of the year. So I hear a"},{"startTime":251.08,"endTime":259.6,"body":"SimZone's approach here and many of  "},{"startTime":259.6,"endTime":266.92,"body":"our listeners may know it or may not know it, but "},{"startTime":259.6,"endTime":266.92,"body":"I'm curious about it. So can you talk a little bit  "},{"startTime":266.92,"endTime":275.36,"body":"more about the SimZones framework? Yes, absolutely. So  "},{"startTime":266.92,"endTime":275.36,"body":"originally the SimZones approach was published  "},{"startTime":275.36,"endTime":284.44,"body":"by Roussin and Weinstock and then more recently "},{"startTime":275.36,"endTime":284.44,"body":"it's been kind of modified for specifically the  "},{"startTime":284.44,"endTime":294.72,"body":"nursing curriculum and education. And basically it "},{"startTime":284.44,"endTime":294.72,"body":"is a framework that we chose because when mapped  "},{"startTime":294.72,"endTime":300.28,"body":"together, SimZones and actually if people are "},{"startTime":294.72,"endTime":300.28,"body":"familiar with Miller's pyramid of competency  "},{"startTime":300.28,"endTime":306.6,"body":"based evaluation, it's a really strong scaffold for "},{"startTime":300.28,"endTime":306.6,"body":"what authentic learning looks like, specifically in  "},{"startTime":306.6,"endTime":313.48,"body":"a longitudinal simulation curriculum. So basically, "},{"startTime":306.6,"endTime":313.48,"body":"to evaluate what learners can do, not necessarily  "},{"startTime":313.48,"endTime":321.72,"body":"what educators teach them or tell them, right. "},{"startTime":313.48,"endTime":321.72,"body":"So the SimZones system is an organization for  "},{"startTime":321.72,"endTime":328.28,"body":"longitudinal simulation based learning and it's "},{"startTime":321.72,"endTime":328.28,"body":"comprised of basically five zones, in which the  "},{"startTime":328.28,"endTime":334.92,"body":"authors talked about how there's specific learning "},{"startTime":328.28,"endTime":334.92,"body":"goals in each zone. And as I mentioned, additionally,  "},{"startTime":334.92,"endTime":340.0,"body":"those zones were mapped to Miller's pyramid "},{"startTime":334.92,"endTime":340.0,"body":"for competency assessment. So you start at the  "},{"startTime":340.0,"endTime":346.16,"body":"bottom of the pyramid or bottom of the SimZones "},{"startTime":340.0,"endTime":346.16,"body":"and you just worry about what your students know  "},{"startTime":346.16,"endTime":353.44,"body":"right. So basically requisite knowledge - what "},{"startTime":346.16,"endTime":353.44,"body":"do learners need to know from didactic courses,  "},{"startTime":353.44,"endTime":360.0,"body":"from their previous Knowledge from readings, to be "},{"startTime":353.44,"endTime":360.0,"body":"able to then elevate them through the next zones. "},{"startTime":360.0,"endTime":365.8,"body":"So zone zero basically of the SimZones talks "},{"startTime":360.0,"endTime":365.8,"body":"about that of just what requisite knowledge  "},{"startTime":365.8,"endTime":372.84,"body":"do they need to know. Then after they know, you "},{"startTime":365.8,"endTime":372.84,"body":"kind of take it one step up into zone one and  "},{"startTime":372.84,"endTime":379.16,"body":"that's basically what they know how to do. So "},{"startTime":372.84,"endTime":379.16,"body":"through the lens of SimZones and through the  "},{"startTime":379.16,"endTime":385.64,"body":"lens of sim, that's talking about things like "},{"startTime":379.16,"endTime":385.64,"body":"you know repetitive deliberate practice of just  "},{"startTime":385.64,"endTime":390.56,"body":"like the psychomotor skills. So once they have "},{"startTime":385.64,"endTime":390.56,"body":"that requisite knowledge and zone zero you can  "},{"startTime":390.56,"endTime":397.64,"body":"move them through the next zone of repetitive "},{"startTime":390.56,"endTime":397.64,"body":"deliberate practice. Then once they sort of have  "},{"startTime":397.64,"endTime":404.92,"body":"been in that zone for a while you can move them to "},{"startTime":397.64,"endTime":404.92,"body":"zone two, which is more contextual learning. So now  "},{"startTime":404.92,"endTime":410.6,"body":"we can actually kind of start to throw them into "},{"startTime":404.92,"endTime":410.6,"body":"simulation based experiences because they have  "},{"startTime":410.6,"endTime":416.6,"body":"that other knowledge from the other zones. But"},{"startTime":410.6,"endTime":416.6,"body":"you can still kind of stop and start them and  "},{"startTime":416.6,"endTime":423.6,"body":"provide feedback along the way and that's kind of "},{"startTime":416.6,"endTime":423.6,"body":"the contextual learning that happens in zone two.  "},{"startTime":423.6,"endTime":430.84,"body":"In zone three that's what we think of the type of "},{"startTime":423.6,"endTime":430.84,"body":"learning that happens in a simulation where they  "},{"startTime":430.84,"endTime":436.36,"body":"start the simulation, they do the entire simulation "},{"startTime":430.84,"endTime":436.36,"body":"and then they stop and we debrief them, so there's  "},{"startTime":436.36,"endTime":442.24,"body":"not that stopping and starting. This is that "},{"startTime":436.36,"endTime":442.24,"body":"traditional, when you think of sim, you know,  "},{"startTime":442.24,"endTime":448.8,"body":"stopping and not stopping until the simulation "},{"startTime":442.24,"endTime":448.8,"body":"is over. And then the last zone, zone four  "},{"startTime":448.8,"endTime":453.2,"body":"is basically taking all of that knowledge that "},{"startTime":448.8,"endTime":453.2,"body":"you've accumulated throughout those zones and  "},{"startTime":453.2,"endTime":459.96,"body":"being able to actually do in practice. And so this "},{"startTime":453.2,"endTime":459.96,"body":"is actually like evaluation that would happen in  "},{"startTime":459.96,"endTime":469.84,"body":"the clinical practice setting, in the wild so to "},{"startTime":459.96,"endTime":469.84,"body":"speak. So for this project that we did last spring,  "},{"startTime":469.84,"endTime":475.08,"body":"we specifically used principles of backward "},{"startTime":469.84,"endTime":475.08,"body":"design through the lens of those SimZones that  "},{"startTime":475.08,"endTime":482.56,"body":"I just described to ensure that our curriculum "},{"startTime":475.08,"endTime":482.56,"body":"met the desire outcomes for our students. So our  "},{"startTime":482.56,"endTime":489.64,"body":"focal point was that individual OSCE, a comprehensive "},{"startTime":482.56,"endTime":489.64,"body":"evaluation to that we use to assess the clinical  "},{"startTime":489.64,"endTime":495.04,"body":"competence of our learners, but worked backward "},{"startTime":489.64,"endTime":495.04,"body":"from that through backward design throughout to  "},{"startTime":495.04,"endTime":500.84,"body":"create an entire semester long curriculum that "},{"startTime":495.04,"endTime":500.84,"body":"moved them through those SimZones to ensure that  "},{"startTime":500.84,"endTime":510.52,"body":"they were prepared to be successful in that end "},{"startTime":500.84,"endTime":510.52,"body":"of semester OSCE. Yeah so there's a lot of elements  "},{"startTime":510.52,"endTime":518.44,"body":"of competency based education to digest from what "},{"startTime":510.52,"endTime":518.44,"body":"you just said, so you definitely  "},{"startTime":518.44,"endTime":525.28,"body":"mentioned backward design, which is of course, you "},{"startTime":518.44,"endTime":525.28,"body":"know, is almost synonymous with competency based  "},{"startTime":525.28,"endTime":533.12,"body":"education. But I hear some elements there as well. "},{"startTime":525.28,"endTime":533.12,"body":"So in terms of what you said about OSCE, so I'm  "},{"startTime":533.12,"endTime":543.28,"body":"thinking, hmm, formative assessments, summative evaluations, "},{"startTime":533.12,"endTime":543.28,"body":"right, and of course the simulations are teaching  "},{"startTime":543.28,"endTime":554.12,"body":"and learning modalities as well, right. So would "},{"startTime":543.28,"endTime":554.12,"body":"you want to expound on how you did your"},{"startTime":554.12,"endTime":563.88,"body":"OSCEs, right. Yeah! OSCEs, what were they "},{"startTime":554.12,"endTime":563.88,"body":"for and what came afterwards. Yeah, absolutely,  "},{"startTime":563.88,"endTime":569.92,"body":"for sure. So to your point of talking about, you "},{"startTime":563.88,"endTime":569.92,"body":"know, we kind of covered the topic backward  "},{"startTime":569.92,"endTime":574.24,"body":"design already, but I would like to kind of piggy "},{"startTime":569.92,"endTime":574.24,"body":"back onto what you talked about regarding like  "},{"startTime":574.24,"endTime":581.48,"body":"formative and summative evaluation throughout this "},{"startTime":574.24,"endTime":581.48,"body":"process. So as I mentioned, our initial step was  "},{"startTime":581.48,"endTime":586.96,"body":"kind of a thorough analysis of zone zero, basically "},{"startTime":581.48,"endTime":586.96,"body":"we assessed our students baseline knowledge and  "},{"startTime":586.96,"endTime":591.2,"body":"did a preliminary analysis that revealed"},{"startTime":586.96,"endTime":591.2,"body":"gaps which kind of  "},{"startTime":591.2,"endTime":599.76,"body":"told us how to tailor our instructional sessions "},{"startTime":591.2,"endTime":599.76,"body":"accordingly. And next a curricular road map was  "},{"startTime":599.76,"endTime":605.04,"body":"essentially created that enabled our learners to "},{"startTime":599.76,"endTime":605.04,"body":"achieve the necessary competencies that we wanted  "},{"startTime":605.04,"endTime":612.08,"body":"them to be able to do by that end of semester OSCE."},{"startTime":605.04,"endTime":612.08,"body":"So the road map basically included preparatory lab  "},{"startTime":612.08,"endTime":620.44,"body":"sessions that aligned with each SimZone framework "},{"startTime":612.08,"endTime":620.44,"body":"zone for our learners. So for example, we held an OSCE"},{"startTime":620.44,"endTime":627.44,"body":"prep lab one toward the beginning of the semester "},{"startTime":620.44,"endTime":627.44,"body":"that we sort of envisioned as being in that zone  "},{"startTime":627.44,"endTime":634.56,"body":"one of our SimZone. So that was held one month "},{"startTime":627.44,"endTime":634.56,"body":"before the summit of OSCE and it was a two-hour  "},{"startTime":634.56,"endTime":640.12,"body":"session that incorporated some small group "},{"startTime":634.56,"endTime":640.12,"body":"practice where students focused on deliberate  "},{"startTime":640.12,"endTime":644.32,"body":"practice of some of the psychomotor skills that "},{"startTime":640.12,"endTime":644.32,"body":"were going to be required later in the semester  "},{"startTime":644.32,"endTime":650.68,"body":"in the OSCE. So specifically things like primary "},{"startTime":644.32,"endTime":650.68,"body":"and secondary IV tubing setup, doing a physical  "},{"startTime":650.68,"endTime":659.32,"body":"assessment, doing ISBAR and a handoff, communicating "},{"startTime":650.68,"endTime":659.32,"body":"with the healthcare team, doing safe IV medication  "},{"startTime":659.32,"endTime":665.64,"body":"administration. And in these two-hour sessions, "},{"startTime":659.32,"endTime":665.64,"body":"in this OSCE prep lab one, in zone one, "},{"startTime":665.64,"endTime":671.44,"body":"learners were able to do deliberate practice of "},{"startTime":665.64,"endTime":671.44,"body":"those things and received real time facilitator  "},{"startTime":671.44,"endTime":678.2,"body":"and peer feedback throughout that session. Then two "},{"startTime":671.44,"endTime":678.2,"body":"weeks after OSCE prep lab one, students returned back  "},{"startTime":678.2,"endTime":685.24,"body":"to the lab for what we referred to as OSCE prep lab "},{"startTime":678.2,"endTime":685.24,"body":"2. So again we envisioned OSCE prep lab 2 occurring  "},{"startTime":685.24,"endTime":692.28,"body":"in that zone two of the SimZones. So this time, "},{"startTime":685.24,"endTime":692.28,"body":"this two-hour session for the learners allowed  "},{"startTime":692.28,"endTime":698.84,"body":"them to engage in small group practice scenarios "},{"startTime":692.28,"endTime":698.84,"body":"designed to mimic what the final OSCE simulation  "},{"startTime":698.84,"endTime":705.52,"body":"was going to look like. So students were allowed "},{"startTime":698.84,"endTime":705.52,"body":"to kind of pause and stop and ask questions of  "},{"startTime":705.52,"endTime":711.2,"body":"the facilitators along the way. And again,"},{"startTime":705.52,"endTime":711.2,"body":"the simulation that they actually participated  "},{"startTime":711.2,"endTime":716.72,"body":"in was very close to the one they were going to "},{"startTime":711.2,"endTime":716.72,"body":"do for their more summative evaluation, but it  "},{"startTime":716.72,"endTime":722.24,"body":"allowed them to stop and start and continue to "},{"startTime":716.72,"endTime":722.24,"body":"get feedback, so again that contextual learning in"},{"startTime":722.24,"endTime":730.2,"body":"SimZone 2. And then what we referred to as zone three "},{"startTime":722.24,"endTime":730.2,"body":"involved the actual summative measurement of those  "},{"startTime":730.2,"endTime":735.48,"body":"nursing competencies through that individual "},{"startTime":730.2,"endTime":735.48,"body":"simulation that each student did at the end of  "},{"startTime":735.48,"endTime":741.84,"body":"the semester for the actual OSCE and every student "},{"startTime":735.48,"endTime":741.84,"body":"took care basically of the same patient. It was a"},{"startTime":741.84,"endTime":747.76,"body":"post-operative patient experiencing some post-op "},{"startTime":741.84,"endTime":747.76,"body":"complications. So does that kind of answer your  "},{"startTime":747.76,"endTime":754.4,"body":"question about how we moved through those zones "},{"startTime":747.76,"endTime":754.4,"body":"to prep them for that final evaluation? Yeah, it  "},{"startTime":754.4,"endTime":763.0,"body":"makes sense, right. So if you have the SimZones "},{"startTime":754.4,"endTime":763.0,"body":"as your frame for moving your students through  "},{"startTime":763.0,"endTime":770.8,"body":"like maybe zero or no knowledge to eventually, oh "},{"startTime":763.0,"endTime":770.8,"body":"at the end of this time frame, whatever that time  "},{"startTime":770.8,"endTime":777.44,"body":"frame was they need to be able to do all of these "},{"startTime":770.8,"endTime":777.44,"body":"things, which of course goes back to our prior  "},{"startTime":777.44,"endTime":782.96,"body":"conversation of backwards design, where while "},{"startTime":777.44,"endTime":782.96,"body":"in the beginning we need to know where they would  "},{"startTime":782.96,"endTime":790.72,"body":"be at the end of a certain time frame, which "},{"startTime":782.96,"endTime":790.72,"body":"traditionally for many of us it's a semester  "},{"startTime":790.72,"endTime":799.2,"body":"or a trimester, half a semester, whatever that is "},{"startTime":790.72,"endTime":799.2,"body":"right. So right. Right and yeah. And yeah interesting.  "},{"startTime":799.2,"endTime":807.88,"body":"So and then I would like to circle back to"},{"startTime":799.2,"endTime":807.88,"body":"your reasons or your aims for this final project.  "},{"startTime":807.88,"endTime":816.48,"body":"Yeah, yeah so essentially we had two major aims "},{"startTime":807.88,"endTime":816.48,"body":"for this pilot project. One the first aims was  "},{"startTime":816.48,"endTime":822.56,"body":"to evaluate the individual clinical competencies "},{"startTime":816.48,"endTime":822.56,"body":"of these third-year pre-licensure baccalaureate  "},{"startTime":822.56,"endTime":829.76,"body":"nursing students who were going to be in a primary "},{"startTime":822.56,"endTime":829.76,"body":"nurse role while caring for this post-op patient.  "},{"startTime":829.76,"endTime":838.0,"body":"So we as the faculty involved created a faculty-"},{"startTime":829.76,"endTime":838.0,"body":"designed checklist where the students either did  "},{"startTime":838.0,"endTime":843.32,"body":"or did not complete observable tasks that we were "},{"startTime":838.0,"endTime":843.32,"body":"going to be looking for and evaluating throughout  "},{"startTime":843.32,"endTime":849.12,"body":"that OSCE. And it was the expectation that the "},{"startTime":843.32,"endTime":849.12,"body":"learners demonstrated competence for every line  "},{"startTime":849.12,"endTime":856.76,"body":"item on that evaluation checklist to be determined "},{"startTime":849.12,"endTime":856.76,"body":"quote unquote competent in the OSCE itself. So to be  "},{"startTime":856.76,"endTime":864.0,"body":"clear, the final version of this checklist that "},{"startTime":856.76,"endTime":864.0,"body":"we designed had four subscales. So really we were  "},{"startTime":864.0,"endTime":871.48,"body":"looking specifically at behaviors that would "},{"startTime":864.0,"endTime":871.48,"body":"fall into categories of patient safety, clinical  "},{"startTime":871.48,"endTime":878.84,"body":"judgment, physical assessment and communication, "},{"startTime":871.48,"endTime":878.84,"body":"with obviously required observable behaviors in  "},{"startTime":878.84,"endTime":886.44,"body":"each one of them. And so measurement we for every "},{"startTime":878.84,"endTime":886.44,"body":"one of these students they came in and did a 35  "},{"startTime":886.44,"endTime":892.52,"body":"minute simulation caring for this patient for "},{"startTime":886.44,"endTime":892.52,"body":"which we measured then these competencies on this  "},{"startTime":892.52,"endTime":899.2,"body":"checklist. And this is this was the interesting "},{"startTime":892.52,"endTime":899.2,"body":"part, Raquel. So performance was determined as  "},{"startTime":899.2,"endTime":905.96,"body":"either competent or developing competency so to "},{"startTime":899.2,"endTime":905.96,"body":"be in alignment and use that same language as  "},{"startTime":905.96,"endTime":912.2,"body":"the AACN is putting out for their competencies. "},{"startTime":905.96,"endTime":912.2,"body":"And if students were deemed still developing  "},{"startTime":912.2,"endTime":918.28,"body":"competency this was not a good/bad, pass/fail kind "},{"startTime":912.2,"endTime":918.28,"body":"of evaluation. This was just, okay, great, you know  "},{"startTime":918.28,"endTime":924.44,"body":"you're still developing competency. So we were able to get 107 "},{"startTime":943.08,"endTime":951.04,"body":"of our learners through this iterative process of  "},{"startTime":951.04,"endTime":956.32,"body":"you know doing the OSCE, coming back if they were "},{"startTime":951.04,"endTime":956.32,"body":"still developing competency, working with them a  "},{"startTime":956.32,"endTime":962.48,"body":"little bit more and then having them do another "},{"startTime":956.32,"endTime":962.48,"body":"OSCE and it it took three weeks, so not as long as  "},{"startTime":962.48,"endTime":969.48,"body":"maybe we thought it maybe would take. That, that's "},{"startTime":962.48,"endTime":969.48,"body":"amazing right. So and I hear the words like all  "},{"startTime":969.48,"endTime":977.8,"body":"students and like individual students and I also "},{"startTime":969.48,"endTime":977.8,"body":"hear certain activities on the end of the faculty  "},{"startTime":977.8,"endTime":984.24,"body":"in terms of the creating the road map, designing "},{"startTime":977.8,"endTime":984.24,"body":"the checklist, evaluation checklist, determining"},{"startTime":984.24,"endTime":996.0,"body":"behaviors. That sounded a lot of work and so "},{"startTime":984.24,"endTime":996.0,"body":"therefore and of course like oh three weeks  "},{"startTime":996.0,"endTime":1002.64,"body":"right, oh were you able to do all of that in three "},{"startTime":996.0,"endTime":1002.64,"body":"weeks! So I'm curious to know, how did you get this  "},{"startTime":1002.64,"endTime":1012.52,"body":"to work? So your faculty for example, I'm curious "},{"startTime":1002.64,"endTime":1012.52,"body":"about that. Yeah, sure, absolutely. So 100% it was a  "},{"startTime":1012.52,"endTime":1018.84,"body":"lot of work and a lot of work to make sure that "},{"startTime":1012.52,"endTime":1018.84,"body":"we did the process right from the very beginning  "},{"startTime":1019.4,"endTime":1024.6,"body":"right so that we were setting ourselves "},{"startTime":1019.4,"endTime":1024.6,"body":"up to be successful all along the way. And we  "},{"startTime":1024.6,"endTime":1030.52,"body":"definitely gained valuable insight into "},{"startTime":1024.6,"endTime":1030.52,"body":"not only the challenges that we as faculty faced  "},{"startTime":1030.52,"endTime":1037.56,"body":"but challenges that student faced with competency "},{"startTime":1030.52,"endTime":1037.56,"body":"based evaluations along the way as well. So one of  "},{"startTime":1037.56,"endTime":1045.44,"body":"the things I will tell you is that very quickly in "},{"startTime":1037.56,"endTime":1045.44,"body":"the process the faculty recognize the importance  "},{"startTime":1045.44,"endTime":1052.44,"body":"of transparency regarding the evaluation process "},{"startTime":1045.44,"endTime":1052.44,"body":"for our learners. You know, so we made sure from the  "},{"startTime":1052.44,"endTime":1057.12,"body":"very beginning that we provided students with a "},{"startTime":1052.44,"endTime":1057.12,"body":"really clear description of how evaluations would  "},{"startTime":1057.12,"endTime":1063.24,"body":"be conducted. We covered that checklist "},{"startTime":1057.12,"endTime":1063.24,"body":"that I just told you about that we designed. We  "},{"startTime":1063.24,"endTime":1067.4,"body":"covered the checklist criteria with the students "},{"startTime":1063.24,"endTime":1067.4,"body":"from the beginning. I think a lot of  "},{"startTime":1067.4,"endTime":1074.12,"body":"us in education sometimes are a little worried "},{"startTime":1067.4,"endTime":1074.12,"body":"about sort of quote unquote teaching to the test  "},{"startTime":1074.12,"endTime":1078.84,"body":"but I think transparency and competency based "},{"startTime":1074.12,"endTime":1078.84,"body":"evaluation is actually really, really important  "},{"startTime":1079.84,"endTime":1085.68,"body":"and we were transparent with the students at the "},{"startTime":1079.84,"endTime":1085.68,"body":"very beginning of the whole process from the first  "},{"startTime":1085.68,"endTime":1091.56,"body":"day of one of those OSCE prep lab ones. We provided "},{"startTime":1085.68,"endTime":1091.56,"body":"the students the evaluation checklist that they  "},{"startTime":1091.56,"endTime":1096.52,"body":"were going to be evaluated on at the end so they "},{"startTime":1091.56,"endTime":1096.52,"body":"had that checklist through all of those prep labs  "},{"startTime":1096.52,"endTime":1100.76,"body":"and all of their learning so that they were, it "},{"startTime":1096.52,"endTime":1100.76,"body":"was very transparent to them what they were going  "},{"startTime":1100.76,"endTime":1106.48,"body":"to be evaluated on and what competencies we were "},{"startTime":1100.76,"endTime":1106.48,"body":"specifically looking at. We learned that was really  "},{"startTime":1106.48,"endTime":1114.44,"body":"important. We also provided timelines for feedback "},{"startTime":1106.48,"endTime":1114.44,"body":"to students and reinforced that student data would  "},{"startTime":1114.44,"endTime":1120.84,"body":"be used to develop personalized learning plans for "},{"startTime":1114.44,"endTime":1120.84,"body":"them and this message was repeatedly communicated  "},{"startTime":1120.84,"endTime":1125.04,"body":"to students throughout the entire semester so "},{"startTime":1120.84,"endTime":1125.04,"body":"that's the one thing I can share with you that we  "},{"startTime":1125.04,"endTime":1130.84,"body":"as faculty learned really quickly of how important "},{"startTime":1125.04,"endTime":1130.84,"body":"transparency is all along the way for learners in  "},{"startTime":1130.84,"endTime":1136.88,"body":"this new methodology. The other thing we learned "},{"startTime":1130.84,"endTime":1136.88,"body":"really quickly was unlike traditional, like as  "},{"startTime":1136.88,"endTime":1142.12,"body":"I kind of as I mentioned before, like unlike "},{"startTime":1136.88,"endTime":1142.12,"body":"traditional pass/fail or A-F grading  "},{"startTime":1142.12,"endTime":1147.92,"body":"systems, competency evaluations were a new concept "},{"startTime":1142.12,"endTime":1147.92,"body":"for many students. You think about the way they've  "},{"startTime":1147.92,"endTime":1156.64,"body":"learned since kindergarten, right. Good/bad, pass/fail,"},{"startTime":1147.92,"endTime":1156.64,"body":"get a 97% on your test. This shift  "},{"startTime":1156.64,"endTime":1164.76,"body":"and assessment methodology was met with certainly "},{"startTime":1156.64,"endTime":1164.76,"body":"a range of emotional responses from students and I  "},{"startTime":1164.76,"endTime":1170.88,"body":"imagine and one of the ways we sort of came "},{"startTime":1164.76,"endTime":1170.88,"body":"to know this was they also had to once they were  "},{"startTime":1170.88,"endTime":1176.96,"body":"deemed competent in their evaluation we had them "},{"startTime":1170.88,"endTime":1176.96,"body":"watch the recording of themselves doing the OSCE"},{"startTime":1176.96,"endTime":1182.64,"body":"and fill out a guided written reflection. And in "},{"startTime":1176.96,"endTime":1182.64,"body":"that written reflection we heard a lot of comments  "},{"startTime":1182.64,"endTime":1190.4,"body":"from students including stress, obviously anxiety, "},{"startTime":1182.64,"endTime":1190.4,"body":"uncertainty, with this type of evaluation process  "},{"startTime":1190.4,"endTime":1195.92,"body":"because as many time even though we told them over "},{"startTime":1190.4,"endTime":1195.92,"body":"and over again throughout this process this is not  "},{"startTime":1195.92,"endTime":1200.48,"body":"good/bad, pass/fail this is either your competent "},{"startTime":1195.92,"endTime":1200.48,"body":"or your developing competency and we'll bring you  "},{"startTime":1200.48,"endTime":1205.92,"body":"back they still thought in their head when they "},{"startTime":1200.48,"endTime":1205.92,"body":"were told on the day of evaluation that okay  "},{"startTime":1205.92,"endTime":1212.12,"body":"great, you're still developing competency several "},{"startTime":1205.92,"endTime":1212.12,"body":"of them still saw it as, oh I failed, and that was a  "},{"startTime":1212.12,"endTime":1219.96,"body":"really hard hurdle to overcome with their level of "},{"startTime":1212.12,"endTime":1219.96,"body":"sort of understanding of competency evaluation.   "},{"startTime":1219.96,"endTime":1227.72,"body":"So that was really important to us as faculty "},{"startTime":1219.96,"endTime":1227.72,"body":"as a learning piece as well. And so I'll say  "},{"startTime":1227.72,"endTime":1234.0,"body":"despite the faculty efforts to create a really "},{"startTime":1227.72,"endTime":1234.0,"body":"supportive environment, many students still did  "},{"startTime":1234.0,"endTime":1239.48,"body":"equate developing competency as like receiving "},{"startTime":1234.0,"endTime":1239.48,"body":"a poor letter grade and that wasn't the case at  "},{"startTime":1239.48,"endTime":1245.76,"body":"all, right. So that was one thing that, that's a "},{"startTime":1239.48,"endTime":1245.76,"body":"big thing that we really learned moving forward  "},{"startTime":1245.76,"endTime":1252.88,"body":"is how important that language is for this shift "},{"startTime":1245.76,"endTime":1252.88,"body":"in methodology of how students will be evaluated.  "},{"startTime":1252.88,"endTime":1260.56,"body":"Yeah, I can imagine if our students had gone "},{"startTime":1252.88,"endTime":1260.56,"body":"through years and years of our traditional  "},{"startTime":1260.56,"endTime":1268.4,"body":"education and suddenly we're shifting them "},{"startTime":1260.56,"endTime":1268.4,"body":"to this new way of well of course evaluation is  "},{"startTime":1268.4,"endTime":1275.64,"body":"is the biggest I would say component there and I "},{"startTime":1268.4,"endTime":1275.64,"body":"am used to getting a grade, like what you said. And of course I "},{"startTime":1282.04,"endTime":1291.28,"body":"can't imagine the cascade of activities that would  "},{"startTime":1291.28,"endTime":1298.28,"body":"happen afterwards to get to my competencies, get "},{"startTime":1291.28,"endTime":1298.28,"body":"competence, but the first thing I would say is the  "},{"startTime":1298.28,"endTime":1307.8,"body":"acceptance of, what do you mean I am not competent "},{"startTime":1298.28,"endTime":1307.8,"body":"yet? Right. Yeah. So I kind of like get what  "},{"startTime":1307.8,"endTime":1313.24,"body":"you're saying there in terms of, oh, let's "},{"startTime":1307.8,"endTime":1313.24,"body":"not forget our students here. Right. Yeah. Yeah. So what about the learning curve "},{"startTime":1336.24,"endTime":1346.72,"body":"of faculty, if there is such right. Yeah. Yeah. Exactly. Because that's "},{"startTime":1378.56,"endTime":1384.24,"body":"what we went through. That's right, right. And so  "},{"startTime":1384.24,"endTime":1392.28,"body":"I guess my question to that and my little "},{"startTime":1384.24,"endTime":1392.28,"body":"push back to that is - do they have to be, right? To  "},{"startTime":1392.28,"endTime":1398.6,"body":"better capture the essence of competency based "},{"startTime":1392.28,"endTime":1398.6,"body":"evaluation I think we in nursing education should  "},{"startTime":1398.6,"endTime":1405.08,"body":"maybe consider reimagining quote unquote what an "},{"startTime":1398.6,"endTime":1405.08,"body":"OSCE is, right, to include iterative coaching and  "},{"startTime":1405.08,"endTime":1411.64,"body":"several opportunities for learner success like "},{"startTime":1405.08,"endTime":1411.64,"body":"the approach that we did in this project. And so  "},{"startTime":1411.64,"endTime":1416.04,"body":"I think that's one of the things for faculty "},{"startTime":1411.64,"endTime":1416.04,"body":"development at large, not just obviously here  "},{"startTime":1416.04,"endTime":1422.24,"body":"at my institution but at large is it'll "},{"startTime":1416.04,"endTime":1422.24,"body":"also take a little bit of retraining the way we  "},{"startTime":1422.24,"endTime":1428.12,"body":"think about some of the ways that we evaluate "},{"startTime":1422.24,"endTime":1428.12,"body":"in the past right. Right.
