Yeah.  "},{"startTime":65.64,"endTime":70.44,"body":"Yeah. Well, like as I mentioned, really tight "},{"startTime":65.64,"endTime":70.44,"body":"teamwork and communication between all of  "},{"startTime":70.44,"endTime":77.72,"body":"the faculty that were involved from creating that "},{"startTime":70.44,"endTime":77.72,"body":"faculty designed competency checklist to actually  "},{"startTime":77.72,"endTime":85.44,"body":"creating the simulation itself for the OSCE, you "},{"startTime":77.72,"endTime":85.44,"body":"know, ensuring that all of the Healthcare  "},{"startTime":85.44,"endTime":91.36,"body":"Simulation Standards of Best Practice were "},{"startTime":85.44,"endTime":91.36,"body":"used, from the way that we communicated and being  "},{"startTime":91.36,"endTime":96.92,"body":"in lock step with the words and the language that "},{"startTime":91.36,"endTime":96.92,"body":"we use to students, you know. You can imagine if  "},{"startTime":96.92,"endTime":103.0,"body":"that if you had a bunch of faculty on different "},{"startTime":96.92,"endTime":103.0,"body":"pages not using this sort of same shared mental  "},{"startTime":103.0,"endTime":108.12,"body":"model and giving students throughout this process "},{"startTime":103.0,"endTime":108.12,"body":"different messages or saying different things, you  "},{"startTime":108.12,"endTime":115.08,"body":"can imagine that you'd be in a mess. Yeah. And "},{"startTime":108.12,"endTime":115.08,"body":"that's that's so important that the faculty  "},{"startTime":115.08,"endTime":119.84,"body":"was truly in lock step. We were really supporting "},{"startTime":115.08,"endTime":119.84,"body":"each other and making sure that we were consistent  "},{"startTime":119.84,"endTime":125.36,"body":"with everything that was happening along the "},{"startTime":119.84,"endTime":125.36,"body":"way because if not, that creates a mess and  "},{"startTime":125.36,"endTime":132.52,"body":"then you start to lose student trust and student "},{"startTime":125.36,"endTime":132.52,"body":"buy-in the situation. So huge call out to all of  "},{"startTime":132.52,"endTime":138.84,"body":"my...all the faculty who were on the team. That "},{"startTime":132.52,"endTime":138.84,"body":"was never the the case and because of it, it was  "},{"startTime":138.84,"endTime":143.2,"body":"definitely an enhancer as you asked. And then "},{"startTime":138.84,"endTime":143.2,"body":"again, the other thing that I would add is the  "},{"startTime":143.2,"endTime":150.08,"body":"transparency to students all along the process. "},{"startTime":143.2,"endTime":150.08,"body":"I think everyone involved did a great job with  "},{"startTime":150.08,"endTime":155.6,"body":"that as well and again, that really helped, with "},{"startTime":150.08,"endTime":155.6,"body":"even though students, this was new for students  "},{"startTime":155.6,"endTime":162.28,"body":"and this evaluation process was very different for "},{"startTime":155.6,"endTime":162.28,"body":"them, as I had mentioned a little a few minutes ago,  "},{"startTime":162.28,"endTime":170.0,"body":"the fact that we were as transparent as possible "},{"startTime":162.28,"endTime":170.0,"body":"did indeed help with trust from the students. So  "},{"startTime":170.0,"endTime":177.04,"body":"that was really key, for sure. Right, so "},{"startTime":170.0,"endTime":177.04,"body":"I was thinking about that as well. We need to have  "},{"startTime":177.04,"endTime":186.24,"body":"the trust of all stakeholders so to speak. Yes"},{"startTime":177.04,"endTime":186.24,"body":"And our students for that matter. "},{"startTime":186.24,"endTime":192.64,"body":"So what about, and I hate to kind of "},{"startTime":186.24,"endTime":192.64,"body":"like point them as barriers, but did you  "},{"startTime":192.64,"endTime":198.84,"body":"encounter any barriers to implementation because "},{"startTime":192.64,"endTime":198.84,"body":"I'm sure our listeners was like so how do you  "},{"startTime":198.84,"endTime":205.24,"body":"navigate those right. Right, right. And you "},{"startTime":198.84,"endTime":205.24,"body":"know, as we kind of have talked about already one  "},{"startTime":205.24,"endTime":212.04,"body":"of the biggest barriers was like, I said before, "},{"startTime":205.24,"endTime":212.04,"body":"getting both students and faculty to change their  "},{"startTime":212.04,"endTime":220.44,"body":"mental models about evaluation and about iterative "},{"startTime":212.04,"endTime":220.44,"body":"learning, right. And so, you know, competency based  "},{"startTime":220.44,"endTime":226.36,"body":"education truly, the true essence of it is about "},{"startTime":220.44,"endTime":226.36,"body":"what the learner can show us, what the learner  "},{"startTime":226.36,"endTime":234.16,"body":"can do. Not...so basically it's about the output, "},{"startTime":226.36,"endTime":234.16,"body":"right? What can they do not about what the input is,  "},{"startTime":234.16,"endTime":240.04,"body":"not about what we're telling them or teaching them, "},{"startTime":234.16,"endTime":240.04,"body":"but what they can actually show us. And so identify  "},{"startTime":240.04,"endTime":247.88,"body":"strategies for students who may move at different "},{"startTime":240.04,"endTime":247.88,"body":"paces within the curriculum requires using  "},{"startTime":247.88,"endTime":255.56,"body":"different or additional resources for mastery or "},{"startTime":247.88,"endTime":255.56,"body":"for competency. And so when student pacing does  "},{"startTime":255.56,"endTime":263.36,"body":"vary and making that personalization of their "},{"startTime":255.56,"endTime":263.36,"body":"process attainable for them, that can  "},{"startTime":263.36,"endTime":269.04,"body":"certainly be a barrier. That takes time, that takes "},{"startTime":263.36,"endTime":269.04,"body":"resources. When you're thinking about students not  "},{"startTime":269.04,"endTime":275.68,"body":"all moving through the curriculum or through that "},{"startTime":269.04,"endTime":275.68,"body":"continuum at the same time and at the same pace.  "},{"startTime":275.68,"endTime":280.48,"body":"I love that about competency based education, "},{"startTime":275.68,"endTime":280.48,"body":"but it definitely can be a barrier because it  "},{"startTime":280.48,"endTime":287.12,"body":"is increased time, increased resources that that "},{"startTime":280.48,"endTime":287.12,"body":"need to be applied for iterative learning. And  "},{"startTime":287.12,"endTime":292.52,"body":"then the last thing I would just say is, again, "},{"startTime":287.12,"endTime":292.52,"body":"we've said it already, but a barrier can certainly  "},{"startTime":292.52,"endTime":299.08,"body":"be moving away from that mental model of good, "},{"startTime":292.52,"endTime":299.08,"body":"bad, pass, fail way of thinking about evaluation  "},{"startTime":299.08,"endTime":306.12,"body":"both for student students and for the faculty "},{"startTime":299.08,"endTime":306.12,"body":"as well. And from what you said and I  "},{"startTime":306.12,"endTime":311.6,"body":"I don't think it's only going to be in your "},{"startTime":306.12,"endTime":311.6,"body":"program that we would encounter the similar  "},{"startTime":311.6,"endTime":320.2,"body":"barriers, but all across nursing education in "},{"startTime":311.6,"endTime":320.2,"body":"terms of implementing CBE. And in our  "},{"startTime":320.2,"endTime":327.48,"body":"traditional..I would say educational environment "},{"startTime":320.2,"endTime":327.48,"body":"of being tied into semesters or quarters. Yeah. right.  "},{"startTime":327.48,"endTime":334.96,"body":"Or even credits, right, or the confines of "},{"startTime":327.48,"endTime":334.96,"body":"credits and then the process of development  "},{"startTime":334.96,"endTime":340.76,"body":"may not be the same for all students and "},{"startTime":334.96,"endTime":340.76,"body":"therefore what would be that cap that we  "},{"startTime":340.76,"endTime":347.92,"body":"would put in there in terms, oh time's up, or even "},{"startTime":340.76,"endTime":347.92,"body":"going to be putting times up and there are all  "},{"startTime":347.92,"endTime":357.4,"body":"maybe conversations happening all over the "},{"startTime":347.92,"endTime":357.4,"body":"country as well. I can imagine that and  "},{"startTime":357.4,"endTime":363.52,"body":"definitely we're going to be looking for forward "},{"startTime":357.4,"endTime":363.52,"body":"to your articles later on in terms of these are  "},{"startTime":363.52,"endTime":370.72,"body":"the barriers and these are potential solutions. "},{"startTime":363.52,"endTime":370.72,"body":"I would be excited to hear that from your  "},{"startTime":370.72,"endTime":379.08,"body":"team eventually. So for you and your "},{"startTime":370.72,"endTime":379.08,"body":"program, what are the lessons learned from this  "},{"startTime":379.08,"endTime":390.0,"body":"experience? Yeah, well so many. Let me start "},{"startTime":379.08,"endTime":390.0,"body":"with the top the top few. The language used  "},{"startTime":390.0,"endTime":396.08,"body":"to explain competency based education and "},{"startTime":390.0,"endTime":396.08,"body":"evaluation to learners is really important and you  "},{"startTime":396.08,"endTime":402.2,"body":"know I think you said it before as we were kind "},{"startTime":396.08,"endTime":402.2,"body":"of starting out here today was gosh, we know that  "},{"startTime":402.2,"endTime":407.8,"body":"competency evaluation is the way to go and you "},{"startTime":402.2,"endTime":407.8,"body":"know we've got a lot of guidelines through the  "},{"startTime":407.8,"endTime":414.2,"body":"AACN with the new Essentials and the competencies, "},{"startTime":407.8,"endTime":414.2,"body":"but I think what we all need to consider is  "},{"startTime":414.2,"endTime":419.72,"body":"that even with really clear, you know, once we start "},{"startTime":414.2,"endTime":419.72,"body":"to develop really clear road maps and really clear  "},{"startTime":419.72,"endTime":425.72,"body":"curriculums based on the essentials there is "},{"startTime":419.72,"endTime":425.72,"body":"indeed a ripple effect of what that actually  "},{"startTime":425.72,"endTime":431.84,"body":"means for understanding. So there's going to be "},{"startTime":425.72,"endTime":431.84,"body":"some increased development needs for faculty and  "},{"startTime":431.84,"endTime":437.2,"body":"also for students. It's not, you just create these "},{"startTime":431.84,"endTime":437.2,"body":"road maps and hit play there's a lot of ripple  "},{"startTime":437.2,"endTime":441.08,"body":"effects about what that means for students' "},{"startTime":437.2,"endTime":441.08,"body":"understanding of how this works and how this  "},{"startTime":441.08,"endTime":445.56,"body":"plays out. So that's the one thing is that the "},{"startTime":441.08,"endTime":445.56,"body":"language that we use is going to be continue  "},{"startTime":445.56,"endTime":454.08,"body":"to be huge moving forward. It's also essential to "},{"startTime":445.56,"endTime":454.08,"body":"emphasize as we continue to grow in our competency  "},{"startTime":454.08,"endTime":460.68,"body":"based education to students the importance of "},{"startTime":454.08,"endTime":460.68,"body":"students keeping details of their competency based  "},{"startTime":460.68,"endTime":469.24,"body":"evaluation experiences confidential from their "},{"startTime":460.68,"endTime":469.24,"body":"peers. You know, if you think about students  "},{"startTime":469.24,"endTime":476.04,"body":"going in for increasingly more simulations or some "},{"startTime":469.24,"endTime":476.04,"body":"type of experiential learning where they have to  "},{"startTime":476.04,"endTime":481.36,"body":"demonstrate their competencies we have to make "},{"startTime":476.04,"endTime":481.36,"body":"sure that the evaluation process is consistent  "},{"startTime":481.36,"endTime":486.6,"body":"and that students who do like let's say an OSCE "},{"startTime":481.36,"endTime":486.6,"body":"a couple of days before another student doesn't  "},{"startTime":486.6,"endTime":492.04,"body":"share with them the details of the case or the "},{"startTime":486.6,"endTime":492.04,"body":"evaluation preventing obviously undue advantage  "},{"startTime":492.04,"endTime":496.56,"body":"for students who take OSCE, you know, a day or so "},{"startTime":492.04,"endTime":496.56,"body":"later than other learners. So I think that's also  "},{"startTime":496.56,"endTime":501.24,"body":"something that we really need to consider "},{"startTime":496.56,"endTime":501.24,"body":"with this kind of move to more experiential"},{"startTime":501.24,"endTime":513.36,"body":"evaluation. You're right, so a lot of thoughts there "},{"startTime":501.24,"endTime":513.36,"body":"in terms of really challenging the traditional or  "},{"startTime":513.36,"endTime":524.56,"body":"old ways of us educators doing things and what I "},{"startTime":513.36,"endTime":524.56,"body":"get from this conversation, in this later part,  "},{"startTime":524.56,"endTime":535.16,"body":"is really the the evaluation piece of it right. "},{"startTime":524.56,"endTime":535.16,"body":"Yeah. How do we evaluate students and OSCE and the  "},{"startTime":535.16,"endTime":543.88,"body":"traditional way we do OSCE. Is there a room for "},{"startTime":535.16,"endTime":543.88,"body":"change or changes, modifications and so on and  "},{"startTime":543.88,"endTime":552.16,"body":"so forth. So. Yeah and consistency is a huge "},{"startTime":543.88,"endTime":552.16,"body":"thing. It's almost similar to us deploying  "},{"startTime":552.16,"endTime":560.6,"body":"written exams and how do we make sure that those "},{"startTime":552.16,"endTime":560.6,"body":"exam items don't get out and provide and undo  "},{"startTime":560.6,"endTime":569.48,"body":"advantage to others. And it really challenges the "},{"startTime":560.6,"endTime":569.48,"body":"validity and reliability of our testing tools.   "},{"startTime":569.48,"endTime":575.76,"body":"One thing that I'm also thinking as you talk "},{"startTime":569.48,"endTime":575.76,"body":"about checklist and evaluation tools would be,  "},{"startTime":575.76,"endTime":584.28,"body":"like eventually, would we be, in nursing education, "},{"startTime":575.76,"endTime":584.28,"body":"be able to produce like standardized tools   "},{"startTime":584.28,"endTime":590.56,"body":"to measure these competencies that we want "},{"startTime":584.28,"endTime":590.56,"body":"for our nursing students to be professional  "},{"startTime":590.56,"endTime":599.72,"body":"nurses? Because I know that, and, well, we're all on "},{"startTime":590.56,"endTime":599.72,"body":"the same boat here. We design our own checklist.  "},{"startTime":599.72,"endTime":606.08,"body":"Yes. But then we expect all our graduates to "},{"startTime":599.72,"endTime":606.08,"body":"practice in the same professional environment  "},{"startTime":606.08,"endTime":611.6,"body":"later on. Right. So why is there a need for us "},{"startTime":606.08,"endTime":611.6,"body":"to have like all different checklists? But I  "},{"startTime":611.6,"endTime":618.36,"body":"truly understand also variability of curriculum "},{"startTime":611.6,"endTime":618.36,"body":"and context and so on and so forth. So eventually  "},{"startTime":618.36,"endTime":625.88,"body":"I think the balance .. where's the balance "},{"startTime":618.36,"endTime":625.88,"body":"there? Yeah. With that, I get to my next questions of  "},{"startTime":625.88,"endTime":633.72,"body":"so what are your next steps for your curriculum, "},{"startTime":625.88,"endTime":633.72,"body":"for your... Yeah. Could you like talk a little bit about faculty  "},{"startTime":633.72,"endTime":641.2,"body":"development and what to consider there. What are your thoughts "},{"startTime":633.72,"endTime":641.2,"body":"on these? Yeah, sure. So you know assessment in  "},{"startTime":641.2,"endTime":648.64,"body":"competency based education you know should be "},{"startTime":641.2,"endTime":648.64,"body":"planned for the program as a whole, right, so  "},{"startTime":648.64,"endTime":655.08,"body":"not just one semester. So yes, we definitely piloted "},{"startTime":648.64,"endTime":655.08,"body":"this sort of SimZone's curricular approach across  "},{"startTime":655.08,"endTime":665.32,"body":"the semester just as a pilot but definitely 100% I "},{"startTime":655.08,"endTime":665.32,"body":"see the value and basically the necessity that  "},{"startTime":665.32,"endTime":671.52,"body":"assessments like this and this sort of curricular "},{"startTime":665.32,"endTime":671.52,"body":"road map needs to happen across an entire program,  "},{"startTime":671.52,"endTime":678.4,"body":"not just a semester. This avoids obviously focusing "},{"startTime":671.52,"endTime":678.4,"body":"the assessment on just a few competencies in a  "},{"startTime":678.4,"endTime":683.52,"body":"course, which could lead to potential gaps in "},{"startTime":678.4,"endTime":683.52,"body":"assessment, gaps in the curriculum, and failure  "},{"startTime":683.52,"endTime":689.84,"body":"to address development of proficiency across "},{"startTime":683.52,"endTime":689.84,"body":"courses and experiences. So I think you know  "},{"startTime":689.84,"endTime":696.76,"body":"the lessons that we learned from this pilot in "},{"startTime":689.84,"endTime":696.76,"body":"one semester we can now begin to extrapolate  "},{"startTime":696.76,"endTime":703.92,"body":"across all of our semesters in the entire "},{"startTime":696.76,"endTime":703.92,"body":"program. And just ensure that basically I mean,  "},{"startTime":703.92,"endTime":710.52,"body":"in my, in my vision, you could essentially "},{"startTime":703.92,"endTime":710.52,"body":"create a simulation curriculum like the one we did  "},{"startTime":710.52,"endTime":716.56,"body":"in this semester and every semester where you "},{"startTime":710.52,"endTime":716.56,"body":"start at SimZone zero and you work the learner  "},{"startTime":716.56,"endTime":723.16,"body":"up through SimZone 3 and every semester all the "},{"startTime":716.56,"endTime":723.16,"body":"while keeping in mind that with every semester  "},{"startTime":723.16,"endTime":732.12,"body":"as you march forward you kind of level up right. So "},{"startTime":723.16,"endTime":732.12,"body":"you kind of every semester you're sort of starting  "},{"startTime":732.12,"endTime":737.76,"body":"through the SimZones with the understanding that "},{"startTime":732.12,"endTime":737.76,"body":"you're starting at a higher level every time if  "},{"startTime":737.76,"endTime":743.08,"body":"that makes sense. Yeah. Yeah. I can imagine what "},{"startTime":737.76,"endTime":743.08,"body":"you're saying in terms of well, you can all you  "},{"startTime":743.08,"endTime":750.32,"body":"can actually apply the SimZones framework not just "},{"startTime":743.08,"endTime":750.32,"body":"for a course, but for the entire program. The entire  "},{"startTime":750.32,"endTime":756.44,"body":"program. And in essence I'm also thinking you can "},{"startTime":750.32,"endTime":756.44,"body":"actually backward design the entire curriculum  "},{"startTime":756.44,"endTime":764.76,"body":"as well, right. Right. So and then like intersperse "},{"startTime":756.44,"endTime":764.76,"body":"your simulations and your OSCEs all throughout  "},{"startTime":764.76,"endTime":771.68,"body":"the semester and have a broad overview of, okay. "},{"startTime":764.76,"endTime":771.68,"body":"And you be able to give that to the students and  "},{"startTime":771.68,"endTime":777.76,"body":"say this is our curriculum, this is your curriculum "},{"startTime":771.68,"endTime":777.76,"body":"at the end of your program you're gonna get there.  "},{"startTime":777.76,"endTime":784.32,"body":"But how. Yes. Right. That would be. Yes. Exactly. "},{"startTime":777.76,"endTime":784.32,"body":"Exactly Raquel. That's what I'm talking about.  "},{"startTime":784.32,"endTime":789.0,"body":"That would be lovely right there and the students "},{"startTime":784.32,"endTime":789.0,"body":"would like have this one pager of like, oh, where  "},{"startTime":789.0,"endTime":798.44,"body":"would I be at the end of this program, right? The "},{"startTime":789.0,"endTime":798.44,"body":"essentials. Right. So the essentials and goals  "},{"startTime":798.44,"endTime":803.44,"body":"of this backward design. Right. You think about the "},{"startTime":798.44,"endTime":803.44,"body":"essentials and you think about the 10 domains  "},{"startTime":803.44,"endTime":809.36,"body":"and the eight concepts that you have to you know "},{"startTime":803.44,"endTime":809.36,"body":"make sure that your curriculum gets aligned to. And  "},{"startTime":809.36,"endTime":815.16,"body":"you know, as I talk to other educators and as we "},{"startTime":809.36,"endTime":815.16,"body":"start to think about redesigning curriculum based  "},{"startTime":815.16,"endTime":820.8,"body":"on the the concepts in the domains of these new "},{"startTime":815.16,"endTime":820.8,"body":"essentials, you know, one thing I hear a lot from  "},{"startTime":820.8,"endTime":824.92,"body":"a lot of educators not just at my institution,"},{"startTime":820.8,"endTime":824.92,"body":"but just friends throughout the  "},{"startTime":824.92,"endTime":832.28,"body":"country, colleagues that I know, is gosh, you know, "},{"startTime":824.92,"endTime":832.28,"body":"every one of those domains has competencies and  "},{"startTime":832.28,"endTime":839.36,"body":"subcompetencies underneath of them and how will "},{"startTime":832.28,"endTime":839.36,"body":"we ever be able to evaluate each one of those  "},{"startTime":839.36,"endTime":843.72,"body":"item subcompetencies? And of course that's "},{"startTime":839.36,"endTime":843.72,"body":"a challenge and that's definitely be a way we  "},{"startTime":843.72,"endTime":849.44,"body":"have to rethink the way we do things, but one "},{"startTime":843.72,"endTime":849.44,"body":"of the solutions that I think is that through  "},{"startTime":849.44,"endTime":856.08,"body":"these kind of experiential simulations at the "},{"startTime":849.44,"endTime":856.08,"body":"end of a semester or at the end of a you know  "},{"startTime":856.08,"endTime":862.36,"body":"a period of time in a curriculum, my goodness, you "},{"startTime":856.08,"endTime":862.36,"body":"can bundle so many of those subcompetencies into  "},{"startTime":862.36,"endTime":869.24,"body":"one simulation. Right! So you do a competency "},{"startTime":862.36,"endTime":869.24,"body":"based evaluation at an OSCE at the end of the  "},{"startTime":869.24,"endTime":875.0,"body":"semester, at the end of the program, there's a lot "},{"startTime":869.24,"endTime":875.0,"body":"of those line items of the checklist that can be  "},{"startTime":875.0,"endTime":882.32,"body":"those subcompetencies that you're banging out "},{"startTime":875.0,"endTime":882.32,"body":"10 competencies in one experience for students.  "},{"startTime":882.32,"endTime":887.56,"body":"And I think that's one way we can kind of get a "},{"startTime":882.32,"endTime":887.56,"body":"handle on all of these subcompetencies is bundling  "},{"startTime":887.56,"endTime":895.44,"body":"them into these experiential simulations in which "},{"startTime":887.56,"endTime":895.44,"body":"students get evaluated in. And yeah, right, and that  "},{"startTime":895.44,"endTime":906.64,"body":"shows us the value of simulations in CBE. Right. "},{"startTime":895.44,"endTime":906.64,"body":"And we're talking about learning. We're talking  "},{"startTime":906.64,"endTime":914.56,"body":"about evaluation. We're talking about what would "},{"startTime":906.64,"endTime":914.56,"body":"be best strategies to do all of these. We're  "},{"startTime":914.56,"endTime":921.6,"body":"looking at a solution that is being presented to "},{"startTime":914.56,"endTime":921.6,"body":"us right now which is simulation based education  "},{"startTime":921.6,"endTime":928.32,"body":"and really I think moving forward it's really "},{"startTime":921.6,"endTime":928.32,"body":"about like well how about we plot our curriculum  "},{"startTime":928.32,"endTime":934.48,"body":"according to the SimZones, right. And then finally one "},{"startTime":971.52,"endTime":980.0,"body":"more question. So what are the students outcomes  "},{"startTime":980.0,"endTime":985.88,"body":"though of this pilot project? So I'm curious about "},{"startTime":980.0,"endTime":985.88,"body":"that. Yeah. Yeah. So I'm really excited to talk a  "},{"startTime":985.88,"endTime":991.68,"body":"little bit about that and share what the student "},{"startTime":985.88,"endTime":991.68,"body":"outcomes were. So as I told you, it really took us  "},{"startTime":991.68,"endTime":1001.04,"body":"three rounds if you will to get all of these "},{"startTime":991.68,"endTime":1001.04,"body":"107 learners through this competency based OSCE. So  "},{"startTime":1001.04,"endTime":1007.84,"body":"you know to be like, I'm really excited to share "},{"startTime":1001.04,"endTime":1007.84,"body":"that around 64% of the students after working  "},{"startTime":1007.84,"endTime":1015.36,"body":"through these SimZones and these OSCE prep labs were "},{"startTime":1007.84,"endTime":1015.36,"body":"competent upon their first summative OSCE and I can  "},{"startTime":1015.36,"endTime":1020.88,"body":"tell you the most kind of critical items that were "},{"startTime":1015.36,"endTime":1020.88,"body":"missed during that first round that would have  "},{"startTime":1020.88,"endTime":1026.12,"body":"someone come back and have to do a second OSCE were "},{"startTime":1020.88,"endTime":1026.12,"body":"things like errors in their physical assessment,  "},{"startTime":1026.12,"endTime":1032.8,"body":"demonstration errors, and safe med administration "},{"startTime":1026.12,"endTime":1032.8,"body":"and then like communication like missed parts of  "},{"startTime":1032.8,"endTime":1041.32,"body":"like performing an ISBAR or a handoff. But by then, "},{"startTime":1032.8,"endTime":1041.32,"body":"so again, of those 30 or so percent of  "},{"startTime":1041.32,"endTime":1047.56,"body":"students who didn't reach competency in that first "},{"startTime":1041.32,"endTime":1047.56,"body":"round, they came back they had some more deliberate  "},{"startTime":1047.56,"endTime":1055.92,"body":"practice and we did another OSCE with them. After "},{"startTime":1047.56,"endTime":1055.92,"body":"that second round, 92% of the entire cohort were  "},{"startTime":1055.92,"endTime":1062.08,"body":"competent. And then again if they weren't,"},{"startTime":1055.92,"endTime":1062.08,"body":"we had them come back we worked with them,  "},{"startTime":1062.08,"endTime":1070.32,"body":"we practiced with them, and they did a third. And by "},{"startTime":1062.08,"endTime":1070.32,"body":"the third round 100% of that cohort were competent  "},{"startTime":1070.32,"endTime":1076.24,"body":"after that continued deliberate practice and their "},{"startTime":1070.32,"endTime":1076.24,"body":"third summative OSCE. And then as I mentioned, we  "},{"startTime":1076.24,"endTime":1083.16,"body":"also did once they were competent, we had had them "},{"startTime":1076.24,"endTime":1083.16,"body":"watch the recording of themselves and had them  "},{"startTime":1083.16,"endTime":1088.8,"body":"fill out a reflective worksheet about asking"},{"startTime":1083.16,"endTime":1088.8,"body":"them questions about clinical judgment  "},{"startTime":1088.8,"endTime":1092.44,"body":"questions, you know, what did you notice about "},{"startTime":1088.8,"endTime":1092.44,"body":"your patient, how did you interpret that, what  "},{"startTime":1092.44,"endTime":1098.76,"body":"did you do about it, how did you reflect on it. We "},{"startTime":1092.44,"endTime":1098.76,"body":"also asked them questions of things like  "},{"startTime":1098.76,"endTime":1103.76,"body":"what have they learned about themselves "},{"startTime":1098.76,"endTime":1103.76,"body":"throughout this process, what will you take with  "},{"startTime":1103.76,"endTime":1110.68,"body":"you into your future practice? And we really saw "},{"startTime":1103.76,"endTime":1110.68,"body":"three major themes that were identified when we  "},{"startTime":1110.68,"endTime":1117.6,"body":"after we got done reading all the students sort "},{"startTime":1110.68,"endTime":1117.6,"body":"of post OSCE reflections. And it really was, they  "},{"startTime":1117.6,"endTime":1123.16,"body":"they were very proud, which was really cool to see, "},{"startTime":1117.6,"endTime":1123.16,"body":"especially after their apprehension of this whole  "},{"startTime":1123.16,"endTime":1128.4,"body":"competency based journey. They were really proud "},{"startTime":1123.16,"endTime":1128.4,"body":"to watch themselves and see how far they've come  "},{"startTime":1128.4,"endTime":1133.84,"body":"when watching their recording. They could "},{"startTime":1128.4,"endTime":1133.84,"body":"see and have a desire to still continue to  "},{"startTime":1133.84,"endTime":1138.84,"body":"refine nursing skills, so they could see they still "},{"startTime":1133.84,"endTime":1138.84,"body":"had ways to go in terms of their growth but were  "},{"startTime":1138.84,"endTime":1148.48,"body":"very proud of themselves. And then lastly, they "},{"startTime":1138.84,"endTime":1148.48,"body":"did see the value in competency based education.  "},{"startTime":1148.48,"endTime":1153.64,"body":"They saw the value of that iterative process of... "},{"startTime":1148.48,"endTime":1153.64,"body":"this doesn't have to be a one and done, "},{"startTime":1153.64,"endTime":1159.0,"body":"I have to be perfect the first time. I have to get "},{"startTime":1153.64,"endTime":1159.0,"body":"everything right. They started to come around to  "},{"startTime":1159.0,"endTime":1164.84,"body":"see the value of that iterative competency based "},{"startTime":1159.0,"endTime":1164.84,"body":"way of learning so that was really cool to see,  "},{"startTime":1164.84,"endTime":1169.32,"body":"especially after some of the apprehension and "},{"startTime":1164.84,"endTime":1169.32,"body":"some of the difficulty at the beginning of the  "},{"startTime":1169.32,"endTime":1174.92,"body":"process with them quite not understanding. \"Now "},{"startTime":1169.32,"endTime":1174.92,"body":"we're doing what and how many times can I try  "},{"startTime":1174.92,"endTime":1180.72,"body":"to take this OSCE\" and you know all of those kinds "},{"startTime":1174.92,"endTime":1180.72,"body":"of questions. It was cool to see them come it all  "},{"startTime":1180.72,"endTime":1186.08,"body":"come together in those reflections of like, "},{"startTime":1180.72,"endTime":1186.08,"body":"oh good. They're getting it. They understand  "},{"startTime":1186.08,"endTime":1190.76,"body":"what this process is supposed to be about. And "},{"startTime":1186.08,"endTime":1190.76,"body":"it is really supposed to be about the  "},{"startTime":1190.76,"endTime":1198.16,"body":"the optimizing learning for them. So that was cool to "},{"startTime":1190.76,"endTime":1198.16,"body":"see. Right and it's really an effort to shift  "},{"startTime":1198.8,"endTime":1206.28,"body":"our students' thinking of valuing learning for "},{"startTime":1198.8,"endTime":1206.28,"body":"learning sake. Yes. Well said. Rather than  "},{"startTime":1206.28,"endTime":1213.48,"body":"a grade, which goes to my next question and I "},{"startTime":1206.28,"endTime":1213.48,"body":"know I said last question, but I just got to. So how  "},{"startTime":1213.48,"endTime":1220.28,"body":"will their transcript look like and I'm just "},{"startTime":1213.48,"endTime":1220.28,"body":"like, oh,  you know how we're transcript based,  "},{"startTime":1220.28,"endTime":1227.4,"body":"GPA based. So how will this translate in transcripts? "},{"startTime":1220.28,"endTime":1227.4,"body":"Well that's a great question and I think that's  "},{"startTime":1227.4,"endTime":1232.84,"body":"still something that we all need to in nursing "},{"startTime":1227.4,"endTime":1232.84,"body":"education kind of make those decisions and decide  "},{"startTime":1232.84,"endTime":1239.2,"body":"what that will look like. I mean, I can tell you in "},{"startTime":1232.84,"endTime":1239.2,"body":"our specific example for this pilot in our program  "},{"startTime":1239.2,"endTime":1245.64,"body":"in our current curriculum, all of their simulation "},{"startTime":1239.2,"endTime":1245.64,"body":"experiences occur sort of under the umbrella of a  "},{"startTime":1245.64,"endTime":1250.4,"body":"clinical course so all their simulations happen "},{"startTime":1245.64,"endTime":1250.4,"body":"in the same course in which they're going out into  "},{"startTime":1250.4,"endTime":1256.4,"body":"clinical and we have a very sort of pass fail "},{"startTime":1250.4,"endTime":1256.4,"body":"kind of evaluation for our clinicals. They don't  "},{"startTime":1256.4,"endTime":1264.0,"body":"necessarily get a number grade for their clinical "},{"startTime":1256.4,"endTime":1264.0,"body":"courses. And so for us, it just kind of tied right  "},{"startTime":1264.0,"endTime":1269.24,"body":"into that, that we would just ... it was just "},{"startTime":1264.0,"endTime":1269.24,"body":"going to be basically competency for the sake of  "},{"startTime":1269.24,"endTime":1277.28,"body":"competency sake and it wouldn't necessarily be "},{"startTime":1269.24,"endTime":1277.28,"body":"tied to a course in which there was a grade in  "},{"startTime":1277.28,"endTime":1283.52,"body":"the first place, if that makes sense. Right. Right. "},{"startTime":1277.28,"endTime":1283.52,"body":"Right. This would  "},{"startTime":1335.56,"endTime":1344.16,"body":"be the culmination of all the other courses that "},{"startTime":1335.56,"endTime":1344.16,"body":"I have taken previously.
