Actually, the work came out of our cohort "},{"startTime":106.0,"endTime":114.8,"body":"with the NLN and Walden University and it really  "},{"startTime":114.8,"endTime":123.04,"body":"was inspired by one of our our colleagues there "},{"startTime":114.8,"endTime":123.04,"body":"that really felt like in order to encapsulate all  "},{"startTime":123.04,"endTime":130.56,"body":"of the projects that were we were moving forward "},{"startTime":123.04,"endTime":130.56,"body":"with and taking on to really address issues around  "},{"startTime":130.56,"endTime":134.64,"body":"social determinants of health and health equity "},{"startTime":130.56,"endTime":134.64,"body":"that we should just pull it together and create  "},{"startTime":134.64,"endTime":143.44,"body":"a book. And so you know we were sitting in a room "},{"startTime":134.64,"endTime":143.44,"body":"of expertise and really, really motivated and  "},{"startTime":143.44,"endTime":150.24,"body":"passionate individuals and I'm really grateful "},{"startTime":143.44,"endTime":150.24,"body":"to Phyllis Morgan. She's our colleague that  "},{"startTime":150.24,"endTime":157.741,"body":"inspired this for putting it out on the "},{"startTime":150.24,"endTime":157.741,"body":"table and we just really tapped each other's  "},{"startTime":157.741,"endTime":164.8,"body":"expertise and wealth and came together in one "},{"startTime":157.741,"endTime":164.8,"body":"collective voice to share it for the communities.  "},{"startTime":164.8,"endTime":171.44,"body":"It, you know, there's so much going on out there "},{"startTime":164.8,"endTime":171.44,"body":"that doesn't necessarily represent the the social  "},{"startTime":171.44,"endTime":177.68,"body":"issues around health and this was something very "},{"startTime":171.44,"endTime":177.68,"body":"specific for nursing, for nursing education, for  "},{"startTime":177.68,"endTime":189.12,"body":"nursing leaders to help encapsulate some real "},{"startTime":177.68,"endTime":189.12,"body":"usable tools to get out into our profession. I  "},{"startTime":189.12,"endTime":195.12,"body":"absolutely agree. I think that at the time of "},{"startTime":189.12,"endTime":195.12,"body":"our cohort with the leadership academy, you  "},{"startTime":195.12,"endTime":201.28,"body":"know, we were kind of coming off of the pandemic "},{"startTime":195.12,"endTime":201.28,"body":"and we know that pandemic did not create health  "},{"startTime":201.28,"endTime":208.32,"body":"inequities but it certainly worked to expose "},{"startTime":201.28,"endTime":208.32,"body":"those in ways that our group just could no longer  "},{"startTime":208.32,"endTime":217.44,"body":"ignore. And so the book that came out of our "},{"startTime":208.32,"endTime":217.44,"body":"cohort really was intended to meet that moment.  "},{"startTime":218.16,"endTime":226.48,"body":"The book calls us to go beyond what we've always "},{"startTime":218.16,"endTime":226.48,"body":"done, beyond just simply recognizing disparities  "},{"startTime":226.48,"endTime":232.64,"body":"and really wanted to challenge and empower "},{"startTime":226.48,"endTime":232.64,"body":"people to address the structures that produce  "},{"startTime":232.64,"endTime":241.52,"body":"those disparities. So really it was meeting "},{"startTime":232.64,"endTime":241.52,"body":"that moment, that shift from cultural competence to  "},{"startTime":241.52,"endTime":248.0,"body":"structural competence that the book describes, "},{"startTime":241.52,"endTime":248.0,"body":"is really where the work begins I feel like  "},{"startTime":248.0,"endTime":253.52,"body":"because it's really not just about understanding "},{"startTime":248.0,"endTime":253.52,"body":"our patients lives but also understanding and  "},{"startTime":253.52,"endTime":262.0,"body":"challenging and changing the systems that shape "},{"startTime":253.52,"endTime":262.0,"body":"those lives. And I would add on by saying that  "},{"startTime":262.0,"endTime":272.64,"body":"we all came to that space from different parts "},{"startTime":262.0,"endTime":272.64,"body":"of the country. We represented coast to coast. We  "},{"startTime":272.64,"endTime":280.08,"body":"represented different backgrounds, different lived "},{"startTime":272.64,"endTime":280.08,"body":"experiences and we came together to provide these  "},{"startTime":280.08,"endTime":287.28,"body":"anchor points that we could disseminate to our "},{"startTime":280.08,"endTime":287.28,"body":"broader nursing community and really laying the  "},{"startTime":287.28,"endTime":294.64,"body":"foundation in this book for solutions-oriented "},{"startTime":287.28,"endTime":294.64,"body":"approaches to tackling these issues. So making it  "},{"startTime":294.64,"endTime":301.68,"body":"not just theoretical but actionable. Wonderful. "},{"startTime":294.64,"endTime":301.68,"body":"Absolutely. I think, I think to piggyback off of  "},{"startTime":301.68,"endTime":307.12,"body":"what Megan was saying, I think absolutely the work "},{"startTime":301.68,"endTime":307.12,"body":"of this book and the work of the cohort was  "},{"startTime":307.12,"endTime":315.68,"body":"100% tied to leadership. Our experiences in the "},{"startTime":307.12,"endTime":315.68,"body":"academy really helped hone in and emphasize if  "},{"startTime":315.68,"endTime":324.96,"body":"not develop a unique set of skills, those skills "},{"startTime":315.68,"endTime":324.96,"body":"of advocacy, policy engagement, systems thinking, all  "},{"startTime":324.96,"endTime":332.16,"body":"of these skills were kind of reflected throughout "},{"startTime":324.96,"endTime":332.16,"body":"the book in a way that doesn't use those words  "},{"startTime":332.16,"endTime":337.04,"body":"to mean that they're just buzzwords but instead "},{"startTime":332.16,"endTime":337.04,"body":"they're competencies and that this book really  "},{"startTime":337.04,"endTime":342.88,"body":"helps leaders build those competencies. Yeah and "},{"startTime":337.04,"endTime":342.88,"body":"the process that we went through in the academy  "},{"startTime":342.88,"endTime":349.36,"body":"had a lot of crucial conversations in it. It had "},{"startTime":342.88,"endTime":349.36,"body":"us really engaged with the complexities as maybe  "},{"startTime":349.36,"endTime":355.6,"body":"a little bit of a microcosm of what goes on in the "},{"startTime":349.36,"endTime":355.6,"body":"broader range of society tackling uncomfortable  "},{"startTime":355.6,"endTime":363.36,"body":"situations, uncomfortable topics to really dig into "},{"startTime":355.6,"endTime":363.36,"body":"the nuance and reflect and hear one another to  "},{"startTime":363.36,"endTime":369.12,"body":"come together as a collective, as one voice, and "},{"startTime":363.36,"endTime":369.12,"body":"the book represents really what that one voice  "},{"startTime":369.12,"endTime":377.6,"body":"is as a way to move forward in complexity around "},{"startTime":369.12,"endTime":377.6,"body":"equity issues. Provide us with your insight on the  "},{"startTime":377.6,"endTime":383.6,"body":"importance of the introductory chapter. You know, I "},{"startTime":377.6,"endTime":383.6,"body":"ask guests who come frequently to the podcast how  "},{"startTime":383.6,"endTime":387.68,"body":"do we use your information? How do we practically "},{"startTime":383.6,"endTime":387.68,"body":"use it in the classroom? Because there's a lot of  "},{"startTime":387.68,"endTime":392.0,"body":"great ideas out there and a lot of, like you said, "},{"startTime":387.68,"endTime":392.0,"body":"buzzwords and information, but we sometimes lose  "},{"startTime":392.0,"endTime":396.88,"body":"that just like in the clinical space, right. We "},{"startTime":392.0,"endTime":396.88,"body":"use that translational piece from the research  "},{"startTime":396.88,"endTime":402.0,"body":"and then to the actual implementation. What I "},{"startTime":396.88,"endTime":402.0,"body":"think is so great about this book is that,  "},{"startTime":402.0,"endTime":407.68,"body":"especially the first chapter and going back "},{"startTime":402.0,"endTime":407.68,"body":"to the introduction, is what I want you to speak  "},{"startTime":407.68,"endTime":413.92,"body":"to, but the first chapter and we'll get to that in "},{"startTime":407.68,"endTime":413.92,"body":"the next question, is how practical it is as a  "},{"startTime":413.92,"endTime":420.96,"body":"tool to develop curriculum and use it to generate "},{"startTime":413.92,"endTime":420.96,"body":"outcomes for student learning in these subject  "},{"startTime":420.96,"endTime":426.72,"body":"matters. And you get great examples and things like "},{"startTime":420.96,"endTime":426.72,"body":"that. So the first question is basically talk about  "},{"startTime":426.72,"endTime":431.04,"body":"the introductory chapter and the importance of "},{"startTime":426.72,"endTime":431.04,"body":"setting that up and then the usefulness of this  "},{"startTime":431.04,"endTime":436.72,"body":"in the classroom for the the instructor or the "},{"startTime":431.04,"endTime":436.72,"body":"professor who wants to use the information. Sure.  "},{"startTime":436.72,"endTime":441.52,"body":"I'd love to tackle that first part and then I'll "},{"startTime":436.72,"endTime":441.52,"body":"bounce it to a colleague for the second part, but  "},{"startTime":441.52,"endTime":447.76,"body":"I think, you know, the first sentence of the "},{"startTime":441.52,"endTime":447.76,"body":"book is it, you know, \"This [chapter] focuses on  "},{"startTime":447.76,"endTime":454.32,"body":"the interconnectedness between the individual, the "},{"startTime":447.76,"endTime":454.32,"body":"family, and the community...\" And I think that that  "},{"startTime":454.32,"endTime":459.92,"body":"right there, that interconnectedness, is the heart "},{"startTime":454.32,"endTime":459.92,"body":"of social and structural determinants of health.  "},{"startTime":459.92,"endTime":468.16,"body":"These are not just isolated issues; instead they "},{"startTime":459.92,"endTime":468.16,"body":"are very layered, multi-faceted, complex and often  "},{"startTime":468.16,"endTime":475.2,"body":"invisible issues to those who benefit from the "},{"startTime":468.16,"endTime":475.2,"body":"way that things are. I feel like that sentence  "},{"startTime":475.2,"endTime":481.2,"body":"of that first chapter really sets the stage then "},{"startTime":475.2,"endTime":481.2,"body":"for the book in terms of why the book centers on  "},{"startTime":481.2,"endTime":486.72,"body":"collaboration. Collaboration not just in a cohort "},{"startTime":481.2,"endTime":486.72,"body":"of leaders who are writing and collaborating on  "},{"startTime":486.72,"endTime":493.6,"body":"the project together, but collaboration on ... it's "},{"startTime":486.72,"endTime":493.6,"body":"not just nursing versus medicine or versus public  "},{"startTime":493.6,"endTime":500.24,"body":"health, it's all of us. It's interdisciplinary. "},{"startTime":493.6,"endTime":500.24,"body":"It's interprofessional. It's intersectional. And  "},{"startTime":500.24,"endTime":508.56,"body":"that's also why I think advocacy has a theme in "},{"startTime":500.24,"endTime":508.56,"body":"every chapter of the book as well because nurses  "},{"startTime":508.56,"endTime":516.0,"body":"have always been advocates. It's what we do. But "},{"startTime":508.56,"endTime":516.0,"body":"here the book calls us to scale that advocacy up  "},{"startTime":516.0,"endTime":523.68,"body":"to the institution, to the state, and to the "},{"startTime":516.0,"endTime":523.68,"body":"national level. And I'll speak to the  "},{"startTime":523.68,"endTime":534.88,"body":"key terms in the introduction because we really "},{"startTime":523.68,"endTime":534.88,"body":"thoughtfully reflected on what we needed in this  "},{"startTime":534.88,"endTime":542.72,"body":"book beginning in the introduction to establish "},{"startTime":534.88,"endTime":542.72,"body":"that shared vocabulary around these challenging  "},{"startTime":542.72,"endTime":550.8,"body":"and complex concepts to really operationalize "},{"startTime":542.72,"endTime":550.8,"body":"these concepts and provide that evidence-based  "},{"startTime":550.8,"endTime":561.04,"body":"background to define these so that reader can "},{"startTime":550.8,"endTime":561.04,"body":"really understand the why behind these definitions  "},{"startTime":561.04,"endTime":568.0,"body":"as they go on to the subsequent chapters. Process "},{"startTime":561.04,"endTime":568.0,"body":"that theoretical information and then also process  "},{"startTime":568.0,"endTime":574.8,"body":"those case studies and reflect on how they can "},{"startTime":568.0,"endTime":574.8,"body":"turn around and use these case studies to apply  "},{"startTime":574.8,"endTime":582.16,"body":"in their classroom, but also scale up to meet the "},{"startTime":574.8,"endTime":582.16,"body":"needs of their communities. Yeah and just to follow  "},{"startTime":582.16,"endTime":588.64,"body":"with that a little bit Megan and Steven. The "},{"startTime":582.16,"endTime":588.64,"body":"way that the book is structured is outlined in the  "},{"startTime":588.64,"endTime":596.56,"body":"introduction and so it talks about call to action. "},{"startTime":588.64,"endTime":596.56,"body":"So they're usable tools as Megan's speaking of.   "},{"startTime":596.56,"endTime":604.48,"body":"We give examples of case studies. We give ways "},{"startTime":596.56,"endTime":604.48,"body":"that that the topics have been implemented in  "},{"startTime":604.48,"endTime":611.04,"body":"communities. So we have the first chapter, as you "},{"startTime":604.48,"endTime":611.04,"body":"referred to, on curriculum. So these are some usable  "},{"startTime":611.04,"endTime":617.92,"body":"ways that you can build into a classroom how you "},{"startTime":611.04,"endTime":617.92,"body":"want to start tackling these concepts and bringing  "},{"startTime":617.92,"endTime":623.44,"body":"these issues forward to the student body. There's "},{"startTime":617.92,"endTime":623.44,"body":"a chapter on administration. There's a chapter on  "},{"startTime":623.44,"endTime":629.04,"body":"clinical partnerships. There's a chapter on "},{"startTime":623.44,"endTime":629.04,"body":"research and dissemination of knowledge and  "},{"startTime":629.04,"endTime":634.96,"body":"then clinical practice. There's one specifically on "},{"startTime":629.04,"endTime":634.96,"body":"clinical practice. So all of these chapters really  "},{"startTime":634.96,"endTime":641.44,"body":"represent real life experience that has been "},{"startTime":634.96,"endTime":641.44,"body":"brought forward as examples of ways that it can  "},{"startTime":641.44,"endTime":648.202,"body":"be carried out in whatever field of nursing"},{"startTime":641.44,"endTime":648.202,"body":"that the nursing leaders are participating in. "},{"startTime":648.202,"endTime":653.84,"body":"Well expand on a little bit of that. What I really "},{"startTime":648.202,"endTime":653.84,"body":"wanted to expand on is talking a little bit more  "},{"startTime":653.84,"endTime":659.04,"body":"about, too, the how nurse education can use this "},{"startTime":653.84,"endTime":659.04,"body":"book. So segueing into that because I'm actually  "},{"startTime":659.04,"endTime":666.16,"body":"considering using it as my book, my textbook for "},{"startTime":659.04,"endTime":666.16,"body":"my leadership course that will be a new course  "},{"startTime":666.16,"endTime":672.96,"body":"that we developed that will be starting this fall. "},{"startTime":666.16,"endTime":672.96,"body":"I think it's an interesting leadership course  "},{"startTime":673.84,"endTime":679.2,"body":"in Florida, you know, we have to be careful "},{"startTime":673.84,"endTime":679.2,"body":"about the language we use for course titles.  "},{"startTime":679.2,"endTime":687.12,"body":"So it's leadership for systems care. You know, "},{"startTime":679.2,"endTime":687.12,"body":"the word equity is not in the title so there are  "},{"startTime":687.12,"endTime":696.16,"body":"challenges right now with the current political "},{"startTime":687.12,"endTime":696.16,"body":"climate of some of the buzzwords and how we can  "},{"startTime":696.16,"endTime":703.44,"body":"use and facilitate this type of curriculum in more "},{"startTime":696.16,"endTime":703.44,"body":"challenging environments. Boy that sounds like a  "},{"startTime":703.44,"endTime":711.68,"body":"Sarah and Megan question. You know, Sacramento State "},{"startTime":703.44,"endTime":711.68,"body":"is all in on doubling down on use of DEI.  "},{"startTime":711.68,"endTime":717.36,"body":"We're quite public about it. We're quite open "},{"startTime":711.68,"endTime":717.36,"body":"about it, but I know Megan and Sarah are in states  "},{"startTime":717.36,"endTime":724.8,"body":"that are bit a little bit less open to those "},{"startTime":717.36,"endTime":724.8,"body":"terms right now so. And I'm in Florida yeah. So you  "},{"startTime":724.8,"endTime":731.76,"body":"are too. Yeah. Yeah. So what do you think, Megan and "},{"startTime":724.8,"endTime":731.76,"body":"Sarah? How do you want to address these issues? "},{"startTime":731.76,"endTime":738.96,"body":"I think it's a challenge that we're going to see "},{"startTime":731.76,"endTime":738.96,"body":"unfold. It's unfolding and continue to unfold and  "},{"startTime":738.96,"endTime":748.24,"body":"it's not something that can have a very simple "},{"startTime":738.96,"endTime":748.24,"body":"and easy fix. In terms of how to use the book,  "},{"startTime":748.24,"endTime":756.48,"body":"you know, whether you're a faculty member or you "},{"startTime":748.24,"endTime":756.48,"body":"know a practice partner, I almost see individuals  "},{"startTime":756.48,"endTime":761.68,"body":"using the book as a companion particularly in that "},{"startTime":756.48,"endTime":761.68,"body":"faculty role. If you're using this, you know use it  "},{"startTime":761.68,"endTime":770.32,"body":"as a course companion. The book can serve as a "},{"startTime":761.68,"endTime":770.32,"body":"lens to help revise curriculum. It can be used  "},{"startTime":770.32,"endTime":778.0,"body":"as a lens to help review policies and also to "},{"startTime":770.32,"endTime":778.0,"body":"help individuals just rethink their assumptions.  "},{"startTime":778.0,"endTime":786.24,"body":"So a lot of times that work can happen behind "},{"startTime":778.0,"endTime":786.24,"body":"the scenes. We know ... we know we're promoting  "},{"startTime":786.24,"endTime":792.96,"body":"the work that we're doing without having to "},{"startTime":786.24,"endTime":792.96,"body":"explicitly call it things that you know might be  "},{"startTime":792.96,"endTime":798.4,"body":"frowned upon at certain institutions. But a group "},{"startTime":792.96,"endTime":798.4,"body":"of faculty members could certainly use this as a  "},{"startTime":798.4,"endTime":804.48,"body":"companion when they're looking at their policies "},{"startTime":798.4,"endTime":804.48,"body":"to determine which policies support equity, what  "},{"startTime":804.48,"endTime":810.88,"body":"might be unintentionally maintaining barriers for "},{"startTime":804.48,"endTime":810.88,"body":"admissions. I think one of the examples provided  "},{"startTime":810.88,"endTime":817.36,"body":"in the book does look at holistic admissions "},{"startTime":810.88,"endTime":817.36,"body":"and speaks to making sure that there aren't  "},{"startTime":817.36,"endTime":828.0,"body":"unintentional structural barriers that might be at "},{"startTime":817.36,"endTime":828.0,"body":"play. I also think it's so important as nurses  "},{"startTime":828.0,"endTime":835.68,"body":"in all areas of practice to be very mindful of "},{"startTime":828.0,"endTime":835.68,"body":"the ever-changing landscape not just within your  "},{"startTime":835.68,"endTime":843.12,"body":"local or state communities but across the country. "},{"startTime":835.68,"endTime":843.12,"body":"We really,  in some states where we do have state  "},{"startTime":843.12,"endTime":852.64,"body":"legislation or executive orders that are are "},{"startTime":843.12,"endTime":852.64,"body":"targeting words. We have to phone a friend in  "},{"startTime":852.64,"endTime":860.56,"body":"another state for additional resources, additional "},{"startTime":852.64,"endTime":860.56,"body":"training and we hope that this book can be that  "},{"startTime":860.56,"endTime":867.44,"body":"resource. And it really begins with us at "},{"startTime":860.56,"endTime":867.44,"body":"an individual level. So looking at the end of  "},{"startTime":867.44,"endTime":873.52,"body":"the introduction chapter ... and "},{"startTime":867.44,"endTime":873.52,"body":"subsequent chapters, there's reflection questions  "},{"startTime":873.52,"endTime":880.88,"body":"and you can use those as an individual to really "},{"startTime":873.52,"endTime":880.88,"body":"look at your own bias, your own assumptions, your own  "},{"startTime":880.88,"endTime":888.88,"body":"privilege and transform that mindset, "},{"startTime":880.88,"endTime":888.88,"body":"but also using it in your classroom, you know.  "},{"startTime":888.88,"endTime":894.8,"body":"For example, I think the reflection questions "},{"startTime":888.88,"endTime":894.8,"body":"at the end of the introductory chapter are a  "},{"startTime":894.8,"endTime":900.88,"body":"great way to have a conversation at the end of a "},{"startTime":894.8,"endTime":900.88,"body":"clinical day in post-conference with your clinical  "},{"startTime":900.88,"endTime":907.84,"body":"group or at the pre-licensure level but also "},{"startTime":900.88,"endTime":907.84,"body":"scaffolding it to the graduate level if you are  "},{"startTime":907.84,"endTime":914.72,"body":"rounding and you have driven a few hours "},{"startTime":907.84,"endTime":914.72,"body":"to see a student like you would in my state  "},{"startTime":914.72,"endTime":920.64,"body":"and spend some time with them and talk about the "},{"startTime":914.72,"endTime":920.64,"body":"work that they are doing in that local community  "},{"startTime":920.64,"endTime":929.04,"body":"and thread those reflection questions in. And "},{"startTime":920.64,"endTime":929.04,"body":"there are ways to be that you can be strategic,  "},{"startTime":929.04,"endTime":935.36,"body":"being mindful of the state you live in. And I really want to just take a  "},{"startTime":972.72,"endTime":979.6,"body":"minute to acknowledge Sarah and Megan and my "},{"startTime":972.72,"endTime":979.6,"body":"colleagues that are in states that have this  "},{"startTime":979.6,"endTime":985.2,"body":"at the state level, not just the federal level of "},{"startTime":979.6,"endTime":985.2,"body":"what we're currently looking at, and there's  "},{"startTime":985.2,"endTime":992.64,"body":"you know, the pressure on universities right now "},{"startTime":985.2,"endTime":992.64,"body":"is big. And to respond to that in a way that  "},{"startTime":992.64,"endTime":998.8,"body":"doesn't harm academic freedom, that doesn't "},{"startTime":992.64,"endTime":998.8,"body":"harm the integrity of a discipline  "},{"startTime":998.8,"endTime":1008.0,"body":"and a profession has to be done with care and "},{"startTime":998.8,"endTime":1008.0,"body":"thoughtfulness. And I really in some ways I  "},{"startTime":1008.0,"endTime":1013.28,"body":"feel real fortunate where I'm at, but in other "},{"startTime":1008.0,"endTime":1013.28,"body":"ways there's a whole other set of potential  "},{"startTime":1013.28,"endTime":1020.4,"body":"consequences for the position that we take. But the "},{"startTime":1013.28,"endTime":1020.4,"body":"bottom line is is as nurses, as nursing educators,  "},{"startTime":1020.4,"endTime":1025.68,"body":"we have a duty to our population. We have a duty "},{"startTime":1020.4,"endTime":1025.68,"body":"to our patients. We have a duty to our communities  "},{"startTime":1025.68,"endTime":1031.6,"body":"no matter what. And I think that our cohort fully "},{"startTime":1025.68,"endTime":1031.6,"body":"stands behind that regardless of what's happening  "},{"startTime":1031.6,"endTime":1037.76,"body":"in any level of society outside of health "},{"startTime":1031.6,"endTime":1037.76,"body":"care. We're going to be here for all people.  "},{"startTime":1037.76,"endTime":1047.44,"body":"And the book really gives us, it gives educators, it "},{"startTime":1037.76,"endTime":1047.44,"body":"gives the community a roadmap on how to engage  "},{"startTime":1047.44,"endTime":1053.04,"body":"with those communities and whatever language is "},{"startTime":1047.44,"endTime":1053.04,"body":"necessary to utilize to still fulfill that purpose  "},{"startTime":1053.04,"endTime":1058.32,"body":"that will have to be navigated.
