I'd like to start by asking you  "},{"startTime":84.8,"endTime":89.92,"body":"to discuss the significance of the book and the "},{"startTime":84.8,"endTime":89.92,"body":"significance of the book to nursing education and  "},{"startTime":89.92,"endTime":98.64,"body":"to the growth of your leadership in this "},{"startTime":89.92,"endTime":98.64,"body":"area. I'll start thank you again for having us  "},{"startTime":98.64,"endTime":105.04,"body":"today. Definitely so excited to speak about this "},{"startTime":98.64,"endTime":105.04,"body":"book, this work that we did. We spent a lot of  "},{"startTime":105.04,"endTime":111.04,"body":"time on it and we are just so happy to be here. "},{"startTime":105.04,"endTime":111.04,"body":"But I think that this book really is a critical  "},{"startTime":111.04,"endTime":116.0,"body":"addition to just the growing body of literature "},{"startTime":111.04,"endTime":116.0,"body":"that relates to health equity and social  "},{"startTime":116.0,"endTime":122.16,"body":"determinants of health. And the great perspective "},{"startTime":116.0,"endTime":122.16,"body":"is coming from the nursing lens. So having that  "},{"startTime":122.16,"endTime":127.84,"body":"different perspective I think is what gives this "},{"startTime":122.16,"endTime":127.84,"body":"book a little bit more significance. It's really  "},{"startTime":127.84,"endTime":135.04,"body":"one of the few texts that really speaks from "},{"startTime":127.84,"endTime":135.04,"body":"nursing leaders from a clinical academic and  "},{"startTime":135.04,"endTime":141.84,"body":"policy standpoint. So thinking about it that way "},{"startTime":135.04,"endTime":141.84,"body":"and also just helps to really operationalize what  "},{"startTime":141.84,"endTime":147.76,"body":"we mean by social and structural determinants "},{"startTime":141.84,"endTime":147.76,"body":"of health. It really can be used for nursing  "},{"startTime":147.76,"endTime":156.88,"body":"education as a blueprint for faculty, students "},{"startTime":147.76,"endTime":156.88,"body":"even nurses, practitioners and just moving from  "},{"startTime":156.88,"endTime":162.96,"body":"thinking about what social determinants of health "},{"startTime":156.88,"endTime":162.96,"body":"to the actionable items that we can do to advance  "},{"startTime":162.96,"endTime":170.64,"body":"health equity and social determinants of health "},{"startTime":162.96,"endTime":170.64,"body":"in our respective practices. And so having an  "},{"startTime":170.64,"endTime":176.4,"body":"opportunity to work on his book really just helped "},{"startTime":170.64,"endTime":176.4,"body":"to deepen my understanding of leadership and what  "},{"startTime":176.4,"endTime":183.84,"body":"that means in this health equity space. And so "},{"startTime":176.4,"endTime":183.84,"body":"it just helped to further advance my interest  "},{"startTime":183.84,"endTime":191.76,"body":"in social and structural determinants of health. "},{"startTime":183.84,"endTime":191.76,"body":"I agree and and add to that I think because  "},{"startTime":191.76,"endTime":199.68,"body":"so many of us, you know, as educators or whatever "},{"startTime":191.76,"endTime":199.68,"body":"space that we sit in, we're often very siloed and  "},{"startTime":199.68,"endTime":207.44,"body":"so we don't really understand the bigger picture, "},{"startTime":199.68,"endTime":207.44,"body":"right? The bigger impact that nurses in whatever  "},{"startTime":207.44,"endTime":214.64,"body":"level can play in the work that we're doing. "},{"startTime":207.44,"endTime":214.64,"body":"And so for me, the book really helped break it  "},{"startTime":214.64,"endTime":221.92,"body":"down at some levels where it could be macro and "},{"startTime":214.64,"endTime":221.92,"body":"it could be micro because we all very much sit  "},{"startTime":221.92,"endTime":230.08,"body":"in different spaces. And honestly, we have more "},{"startTime":221.92,"endTime":230.08,"body":"authority than we actually think that we have. We  "},{"startTime":230.08,"endTime":238.48,"body":"have a larger voice than we think that we have and "},{"startTime":230.08,"endTime":238.48,"body":"really allowing nurses to have that understanding,  "},{"startTime":238.48,"endTime":246.24,"body":"right? To be able to to see it from a lens that "},{"startTime":238.48,"endTime":246.24,"body":"they often don't see it is really helpful. And I  "},{"startTime":246.24,"endTime":255.68,"body":"think as policy changes, as what we see around us "},{"startTime":246.24,"endTime":255.68,"body":"changes, it's really important that we still lean  "},{"startTime":255.68,"endTime":261.36,"body":"into the thing that's the most important to us as "},{"startTime":255.68,"endTime":261.36,"body":"nurses, which is the person. And so at whatever  "},{"startTime":261.36,"endTime":269.12,"body":"level you can keep leaning into the person, "},{"startTime":261.36,"endTime":269.12,"body":"I think this book can really lend to that. It  "},{"startTime":269.12,"endTime":276.16,"body":"is a social determinant. It is focused on change. "},{"startTime":269.12,"endTime":276.16,"body":"And so as a nurse, how are you a change leader and  "},{"startTime":276.16,"endTime":284.08,"body":"really in the society that you live in? Thank you. "},{"startTime":276.16,"endTime":284.08,"body":"Yeah, I agree with both of you. One thing that I  "},{"startTime":284.08,"endTime":291.68,"body":"really appreciate about the group who wrote the "},{"startTime":284.08,"endTime":291.68,"body":"book is that we are all from very different , we  "},{"startTime":291.68,"endTime":300.4,"body":"we kind of cross the the breadth of of nursing. "},{"startTime":291.68,"endTime":300.4,"body":"We have people we had people who were teaching in  "},{"startTime":300.4,"endTime":310.8,"body":"at the the associate degree, bachelor's, DNP, and "},{"startTime":300.4,"endTime":310.8,"body":"PhD levels and really also people who were  "},{"startTime":310.8,"endTime":318.0,"body":"really involved in policy. I know Melissa had a "},{"startTime":310.8,"endTime":318.0,"body":"had a big role in New York with mental  "},{"startTime":318.0,"endTime":328.08,"body":"health and so both the policy and practice and "},{"startTime":318.0,"endTime":328.08,"body":"education all together. I think that that helps  "},{"startTime":328.08,"endTime":337.76,"body":"the book have relevance to all types of nursing. "},{"startTime":328.08,"endTime":337.76,"body":"And I think that for me, my growth as a  "},{"startTime":337.76,"endTime":344.0,"body":"leader with writing this book, I learned so much "},{"startTime":337.76,"endTime":344.0,"body":"from my colleagues about writing, you know during  "},{"startTime":344.0,"endTime":350.48,"body":"the writing process. But it also you know gave "},{"startTime":344.0,"endTime":350.48,"body":"us this opportunity to really think about"},{"startTime":350.48,"endTime":355.6,"body":"where should nursing be going instead of you know "},{"startTime":350.48,"endTime":355.6,"body":"where have we been. So some of it's looking back  "},{"startTime":355.6,"endTime":361.04,"body":"but also thinking about like social and structural "},{"startTime":355.6,"endTime":361.04,"body":"determinants of health. How do we really integrate  "},{"startTime":361.04,"endTime":368.48,"body":"those experiences so that our future nurses "},{"startTime":361.04,"endTime":368.48,"body":"nurse practitioners researchers are really  "},{"startTime":368.48,"endTime":374.32,"body":"putting are affecting the social determinants "},{"startTime":368.48,"endTime":374.32,"body":"of health? Not just recognizing them and maybe  "},{"startTime":374.32,"endTime":380.48,"body":"you know doing something minor, but really having "},{"startTime":374.32,"endTime":380.48,"body":"major effects so that we can reach health equity.  "},{"startTime":380.48,"endTime":384.96,"body":"That goes into the next question. I think when we "},{"startTime":380.48,"endTime":384.96,"body":"just asking you to discuss the application of the  "},{"startTime":384.96,"endTime":388.96,"body":"book for research, dissemination and advancing "},{"startTime":384.96,"endTime":388.96,"body":"social and structural determinants of health and  "},{"startTime":388.96,"endTime":394.24,"body":"social change, especially some of the exemplars "},{"startTime":388.96,"endTime":394.24,"body":"like scoping reviews and bibliometric analysis.  "},{"startTime":394.24,"endTime":399.36,"body":"You know, how can those exemplars be used by "},{"startTime":394.24,"endTime":399.36,"body":"nursing faculty for their research course?  "},{"startTime":399.36,"endTime":408.0,"body":"Mhm. Well, you know, our bibliometric "},{"startTime":399.36,"endTime":408.0,"body":"analysis, which was really looking at racism and  "},{"startTime":408.0,"endTime":415.92,"body":"where it is in the in the nursing literature. That "},{"startTime":408.0,"endTime":415.92,"body":"really came out of a discussion that we had as a  "},{"startTime":415.92,"endTime":423.12,"body":"group where people were saying like, anytime "},{"startTime":415.92,"endTime":423.12,"body":"the word racism is there in the title or the  "},{"startTime":423.12,"endTime":430.0,"body":"abstract, you know, we're getting push back from "},{"startTime":423.12,"endTime":430.0,"body":"reviewers. And so we explored what is what's been  "},{"startTime":430.0,"endTime":436.08,"body":"written about racism in the nursing literature and "},{"startTime":430.0,"endTime":436.08,"body":"found that it really wasn't used prior to 2020,  "},{"startTime":436.08,"endTime":442.173,"body":"even though it's really foundational to "},{"startTime":436.08,"endTime":442.173,"body":"those social determinants of health. And  "},{"startTime":442.173,"endTime":447.92,"body":"so there's really this significant bias in the"},{"startTime":442.173,"endTime":447.92,"body":"system even though we don't as nurses often  "},{"startTime":447.92,"endTime":455.76,"body":"want to acknowledge it. I feel like there are "},{"startTime":447.92,"endTime":455.76,"body":"some changes that are starting, but I think that  "},{"startTime":455.76,"endTime":463.84,"body":"the bibliometric analysis and scoping reviews take "},{"startTime":455.76,"endTime":463.84,"body":"this broad view of what what is out there so that  "},{"startTime":463.84,"endTime":468.8,"body":"we kind of have a place to start. And they're both "},{"startTime":463.84,"endTime":468.8,"body":"pretty new forms of research in the last 20 years,  "},{"startTime":468.8,"endTime":478.16,"body":"but you're seeing they're really exploding. "},{"startTime":468.8,"endTime":478.16,"body":"And I think it there there's a need for more  "},{"startTime":478.16,"endTime":486.48,"body":"programs earlier in the pipeline to be really "},{"startTime":478.16,"endTime":486.48,"body":"introducing students to research so that we can  "},{"startTime":486.48,"endTime":492.0,"body":"you know advance the numbers of researchers "},{"startTime":486.48,"endTime":492.0,"body":"from diverse backgrounds because they're going  "},{"startTime":492.0,"endTime":496.96,"body":"to ask diverse questions and they're going to "},{"startTime":492.0,"endTime":496.96,"body":"they're going to look at at the research through  "},{"startTime":496.96,"endTime":503.68,"body":"a different lens. So incorporating these types "},{"startTime":496.96,"endTime":503.68,"body":"of things earlier on in nursing education can be  "},{"startTime":503.68,"endTime":508.4,"body":"really helpful. That's great information and great "},{"startTime":503.68,"endTime":508.4,"body":"advice too, especially for those with prospective  "},{"startTime":508.4,"endTime":512.64,"body":"researchers. Would you discuss the application "},{"startTime":508.4,"endTime":512.64,"body":"of the book in the clinical setting now moving  "},{"startTime":512.64,"endTime":516.88,"body":"from the research setting for advancing social "},{"startTime":512.64,"endTime":516.88,"body":"and structural determinants of health and social  "},{"startTime":516.88,"endTime":524.4,"body":"change in clinical practice? Yeah. I mean, I think "},{"startTime":516.88,"endTime":524.4,"body":"for me at least I'll kick this off. I think for me  "},{"startTime":524.4,"endTime":530.64,"body":"one of the most important things as I considered "},{"startTime":524.4,"endTime":530.64,"body":"what I was going to do for my leadership project  "},{"startTime":530.64,"endTime":538.72,"body":"for the NLN was thinking about it from a large "},{"startTime":530.64,"endTime":538.72,"body":"perspective. Right? So as Claire mentioned,  "},{"startTime":538.72,"endTime":543.92,"body":"you know, we have an impact throughout the state "},{"startTime":538.72,"endTime":543.92,"body":"of New York or where I sit has an impact across  "},{"startTime":543.92,"endTime":549.84,"body":"the state of New York. And one of the things "},{"startTime":543.92,"endTime":549.84,"body":"that I think we were discovering was there  "},{"startTime":549.84,"endTime":555.2,"body":"was no commonality in how people were referring to "},{"startTime":549.84,"endTime":555.2,"body":"things or how people were understanding things and  "},{"startTime":555.2,"endTime":561.6,"body":"really bringing it back to that baseline level of "},{"startTime":555.2,"endTime":561.6,"body":"what is social determinants, how do you actually  "},{"startTime":561.6,"endTime":566.32,"body":"address it and then what are some resources that "},{"startTime":561.6,"endTime":566.32,"body":"you can use. I think one of the things that most  "},{"startTime":566.32,"endTime":571.2,"body":"people struggle with in both clinical settings is "},{"startTime":566.32,"endTime":571.2,"body":"like, well, you're asking me to do this thing but  "},{"startTime":571.2,"endTime":574.64,"body":"how do I do this thing? Like what is the tool "},{"startTime":571.2,"endTime":574.64,"body":"you're going to give me to do this thing? So  "},{"startTime":574.64,"endTime":579.2,"body":"really helping them to have some understanding of "},{"startTime":574.64,"endTime":579.2,"body":"tools that are available and how they could apply  "},{"startTime":579.2,"endTime":584.96,"body":"them in very practical ways because that is the "},{"startTime":579.2,"endTime":584.96,"body":"other push back, right. How can I apply this? You're  "},{"startTime":584.96,"endTime":589.52,"body":"expecting me to do all this stuff and you know I "},{"startTime":584.96,"endTime":589.52,"body":"have this case load that's like really large? And  "},{"startTime":589.52,"endTime":596.32,"body":"again, bringing it back to reality. We do understand "},{"startTime":589.52,"endTime":596.32,"body":"that you know as clinicians, as providers you have  "},{"startTime":596.32,"endTime":603.92,"body":"a heavy burden. You have a full plate. Right. Social "},{"startTime":596.32,"endTime":603.92,"body":"determinants is foundational to really"},{"startTime":603.92,"endTime":613.12,"body":"providing competent, right, care. Not even "},{"startTime":603.92,"endTime":613.12,"body":"exemplary care. Competent care. And so really,  "},{"startTime":613.12,"endTime":618.72,"body":"how can we in our settings, regardless of"},{"startTime":613.12,"endTime":618.72,"body":"your setting, really look at the person  "},{"startTime":618.72,"endTime":625.2,"body":"as a person and then build from there because "},{"startTime":618.72,"endTime":625.2,"body":"I think as nurses, we love to say person-  "},{"startTime":625.2,"endTime":631.76,"body":"centered care, but sometimes we remove ourselves from "},{"startTime":625.2,"endTime":631.76,"body":"the person. And so, you know, social determinants,  "},{"startTime":631.76,"endTime":637.68,"body":"understanding what they are, understanding how "},{"startTime":631.76,"endTime":637.68,"body":"they impact people in your community, in your  "},{"startTime":637.68,"endTime":643.84,"body":"clinical settings is an important thing to remind "},{"startTime":637.68,"endTime":643.84,"body":"people of or introduce them to if they really  "},{"startTime":643.84,"endTime":650.8,"body":"have not spent time understanding it. Right. And I "},{"startTime":643.84,"endTime":650.8,"body":"think, just piggybacking on what Melissa said and  "},{"startTime":650.8,"endTime":659.04,"body":"speaking from the clinical perspective, it has to "},{"startTime":650.8,"endTime":659.04,"body":"start from the academic portion of it. So in order  "},{"startTime":659.04,"endTime":666.48,"body":"to truly be able to prepare our future nurses and "},{"startTime":659.04,"endTime":666.48,"body":"future practitioners to be able to work toward  "},{"startTime":666.48,"endTime":672.08,"body":"advancing health equity and recognizing the impact "},{"startTime":666.48,"endTime":672.08,"body":"of SDOH, we have to start foundationally. So,  "},{"startTime":672.08,"endTime":677.84,"body":"Melissa mentioned the foundation of care is SDOH. "},{"startTime":672.08,"endTime":677.84,"body":"We have to recognize that and the impact well,  "},{"startTime":677.84,"endTime":684.24,"body":"we have to start at the foundational level. So "},{"startTime":677.84,"endTime":684.24,"body":"in school and so the portion of my project was  "},{"startTime":684.24,"endTime":692.24,"body":"really about learning how for students to be able "},{"startTime":684.24,"endTime":692.24,"body":"to incorporate SDOH screening into their clinical  "},{"startTime":692.24,"endTime":698.32,"body":"documentation. So at my institution it was a "},{"startTime":692.24,"endTime":698.32,"body":"discussion how are we integrating SDOH in your  "},{"startTime":698.32,"endTime":703.12,"body":"course? Is it in this class? Is it in this class? "},{"startTime":698.32,"endTime":703.12,"body":"And making sure that we're mapping it in and  "},{"startTime":703.12,"endTime":708.0,"body":"integrated into all courses. And so every "},{"startTime":703.12,"endTime":708.0,"body":"specialty had something different. And so  "},{"startTime":708.0,"endTime":714.64,"body":"the idea was that if we start to foundationally "},{"startTime":708.0,"endTime":714.64,"body":"from the health assessment, this is something that  "},{"startTime":714.64,"endTime":720.48,"body":"you need to be thinking about as a future nurse "},{"startTime":714.64,"endTime":720.48,"body":"practitioner, how is it that we think about SDOH?  "},{"startTime":720.48,"endTime":725.52,"body":"And then once we get to learn what SDOH means "},{"startTime":720.48,"endTime":725.52,"body":"as we integrate it throughout the curriculum,  "},{"startTime":725.52,"endTime":730.24,"body":"then in your final practicums, being able to "},{"startTime":725.52,"endTime":730.24,"body":"say, okay, this is what I learned and this is  "},{"startTime":730.24,"endTime":737.882,"body":"how I'm applying it. So your hospital-based and "},{"startTime":730.24,"endTime":737.882,"body":"your clinic based settings, they probably are  "},{"startTime":737.882,"endTime":742.64,"body":"getting that information about SDOH, they probably "},{"startTime":737.882,"endTime":742.64,"body":"have some surveys and screeners, but how many of  "},{"startTime":742.64,"endTime":748.16,"body":"our students are actually looking at it? Are "},{"startTime":742.64,"endTime":748.16,"body":"you asking these questions? So the idea that I  "},{"startTime":748.16,"endTime":754.08,"body":"had was that this is an a part of your clinical "},{"startTime":748.16,"endTime":754.08,"body":"documentation. It's required for every single  "},{"startTime":754.08,"endTime":758.88,"body":"patient, no matter what they present with. And "},{"startTime":754.08,"endTime":758.88,"body":"so that you can start to think about the impact  "},{"startTime":758.88,"endTime":767.04,"body":"that SDOH has on every single person regardless of "},{"startTime":758.88,"endTime":767.04,"body":"their presentation. That's great. Thank you. So,  "},{"startTime":767.04,"endTime":770.64,"body":"one of the questions I think or one of the main "},{"startTime":767.04,"endTime":770.64,"body":"areas of interest that our listeners are going  "},{"startTime":770.64,"endTime":775.6,"body":"to want to know is how can they use this book in "},{"startTime":770.64,"endTime":775.6,"body":"their courses. And some of our nurse educators will  "},{"startTime":775.6,"endTime":779.12,"body":"also want to know how we can use this for faculty "},{"startTime":775.6,"endTime":779.12,"body":"development. What are your suggestions in this  "},{"startTime":779.12,"endTime":789.52,"body":"area? Well, I will say as the nurse educator from "},{"startTime":779.12,"endTime":789.52,"body":"my facility is that it's a great resource. I think  "},{"startTime":789.52,"endTime":794.96,"body":"you know our chief nurse officer has really also "},{"startTime":789.52,"endTime":794.96,"body":"reviewed this book and she she understands the  "},{"startTime":794.96,"endTime":801.76,"body":"importance of the book. I think as nurses again, "},{"startTime":794.96,"endTime":801.76,"body":"we really have to understand what it is that we  "},{"startTime":801.76,"endTime":809.92,"body":"are what our charge is as nurses and and I think "},{"startTime":801.76,"endTime":809.92,"body":"whatever we can do to help not only our students,  "},{"startTime":809.92,"endTime":816.72,"body":"ourselves, but the people above us because "},{"startTime":809.92,"endTime":816.72,"body":"leadership is a major part of any organization.  "},{"startTime":816.72,"endTime":822.0,"body":"And so I think having the perspective in "},{"startTime":816.72,"endTime":822.0,"body":"this book where you have it at all levels,  "},{"startTime":822.0,"endTime":828.0,"body":"right? From you as the clinician, you as the "},{"startTime":822.0,"endTime":828.0,"body":"educator, you as the person with authority to  "},{"startTime":828.0,"endTime":835.76,"body":"to maybe change policies. It's an important thing "},{"startTime":828.0,"endTime":835.76,"body":"for I think anyone any nurse in any position  "},{"startTime":835.76,"endTime":840.56,"body":"to really understand that and to share that with "},{"startTime":835.76,"endTime":840.56,"body":"the people around them. And that was one of the  "},{"startTime":840.56,"endTime":846.4,"body":"things I think this book can really do. So even "},{"startTime":840.56,"endTime":846.4,"body":"if you don't feel like, well, I'm not in policy,  "},{"startTime":846.4,"endTime":854.32,"body":"that's true. We all impact policy in some way. "},{"startTime":846.4,"endTime":854.32,"body":"I'm sure you all got emails recently from some  "},{"startTime":854.32,"endTime":859.84,"body":"nursing organization asking you to sign a petition "},{"startTime":854.32,"endTime":859.84,"body":"to to do something. That is policy! So you may not  "},{"startTime":859.84,"endTime":865.68,"body":"see your impact, but you all play a role in "},{"startTime":859.84,"endTime":865.68,"body":"policy. And I think this book can do that.  "},{"startTime":865.68,"endTime":870.08,"body":"And I think that's the beauty of this book, too. "},{"startTime":865.68,"endTime":870.08,"body":"So it's not just from one perspective. So we're  "},{"startTime":870.08,"endTime":874.08,"body":"talking about practice, we're talking about "},{"startTime":870.08,"endTime":874.08,"body":"education, we're talking about research and  "},{"startTime":874.08,"endTime":880.88,"body":"policy. And so regardless of what course it is "},{"startTime":874.08,"endTime":880.88,"body":"that you may teach, there's some aspect of this  "},{"startTime":880.88,"endTime":887.2,"body":"book that will have relevance.
