So,"},{"startTime":126.0,"endTime":130.32,"body":"those were kind of the highlights that I got from "},{"startTime":126.0,"endTime":130.32,"body":"the podcast. What about you? I agree. agree with"},{"startTime":130.32,"endTime":137.92,"body":"you there. It's really definitely something that "},{"startTime":130.32,"endTime":137.92,"body":"stimulated my imagination to kind of like think"},{"startTime":137.92,"endTime":145.6,"body":"of oh how can we develop simulation scenarios "},{"startTime":137.92,"endTime":145.6,"body":"out of the this conversations and then also the"},{"startTime":145.6,"endTime":156.0,"body":"idea of having people with different disabilities, "},{"startTime":145.6,"endTime":156.0,"body":"intellectual disabilities within that simulation"},{"startTime":156.0,"endTime":163.6,"body":"scenario itself. That was very interesting to me. "},{"startTime":156.0,"endTime":163.6,"body":"And the other thing that kind of like caught my"},{"startTime":163.6,"endTime":170.56,"body":"attention was the word ableism. And I think that's "},{"startTime":163.6,"endTime":170.56,"body":"something that we really have to understand as"},{"startTime":170.56,"endTime":178.96,"body":"nurses and health care workers and even educators "},{"startTime":170.56,"endTime":178.96,"body":"and how does that kind of like play into how we"},{"startTime":178.96,"endTime":187.12,"body":"do or function in our roles. But the good news is "},{"startTime":178.96,"endTime":187.12,"body":"we have the tools. We have the toolkit and also"},{"startTime":187.12,"endTime":194.0,"body":"the ACE.D scenarios that they developed that can "},{"startTime":187.12,"endTime":194.0,"body":"be used especially for educators who you know they"},{"startTime":194.0,"endTime":198.96,"body":"need to somewhere to start or they're not sure how "},{"startTime":194.0,"endTime":198.96,"body":"to embed it into the curriculum. So I think that's"},{"startTime":198.96,"endTime":204.32,"body":"a great starting base. So I'm glad to hear about "},{"startTime":198.96,"endTime":204.32,"body":"how that was created and what the components are"},{"startTime":204.32,"endTime":209.68,"body":"of those toolkits that can help in making sure "},{"startTime":204.32,"endTime":209.68,"body":"that you know that all of us are are teaching"},{"startTime":209.68,"endTime":217.76,"body":"this content, right? Delighted to be here."},{"startTime":275.68,"endTime":282.32,"body":"All right. So, we're going to start with our first "},{"startTime":275.68,"endTime":282.32,"body":"question. We want to talk about the big picture."},{"startTime":282.32,"endTime":288.08,"body":"Why is this important to focus on individuals "},{"startTime":282.32,"endTime":288.08,"body":"with intellectual and developmental disabilities"},{"startTime":288.08,"endTime":295.04,"body":"and have this in our nursing education today? It's "},{"startTime":288.08,"endTime":295.04,"body":"actually quite crucial. One of the reasons is that"},{"startTime":295.04,"endTime":301.92,"body":"the number of people with disability in general "},{"startTime":295.04,"endTime":301.92,"body":"and IDD specifically it's a large and growing"},{"startTime":301.92,"endTime":309.28,"body":"population both of them are and individuals "},{"startTime":301.92,"endTime":309.28,"body":"with disability do not receive equitable"},{"startTime":309.28,"endTime":316.96,"body":"health care they have health disparities and the "},{"startTime":309.28,"endTime":316.96,"body":"health care that they receive across the board"},{"startTime":316.96,"endTime":323.6,"body":"is often lacking and so there is quite a need for "},{"startTime":316.96,"endTime":323.6,"body":"addressing the topic of disability And it's not"},{"startTime":323.6,"endTime":329.68,"body":"just in nursing education, it's the other health "},{"startTime":323.6,"endTime":329.68,"body":"care professions as well. We of course are focused"},{"startTime":329.68,"endTime":336.24,"body":"on nursing education. We're focused on nursing "},{"startTime":329.68,"endTime":336.24,"body":"students, nursing faculty as well as nurses in"},{"startTime":336.24,"endTime":343.2,"body":"practice. The issues however are the same and "},{"startTime":336.24,"endTime":343.2,"body":"those issues are lack of adequate education about"},{"startTime":343.2,"endTime":350.4,"body":"IDD and the health issues they experience and the "},{"startTime":343.2,"endTime":350.4,"body":"need for strategies to ensure quality health care"},{"startTime":350.4,"endTime":355.12,"body":"for this population. You know, I just want to "},{"startTime":350.4,"endTime":355.12,"body":"take us back and I probably should have started"},{"startTime":355.12,"endTime":360.72,"body":"with this question. I've had the assumption "},{"startTime":355.12,"endTime":360.72,"body":"that everybody understands what IDD is. So,"},{"startTime":360.72,"endTime":366.0,"body":"can you take us back and define what that is and "},{"startTime":360.72,"endTime":366.0,"body":"what would be some of those diagnosis that would"},{"startTime":366.0,"endTime":370.08,"body":"be under, you know, having an intellectual "},{"startTime":366.0,"endTime":370.08,"body":"disability? Okay, that's that really is an"},{"startTime":370.08,"endTime":375.92,"body":"important question, Helen. Intellectual and "},{"startTime":370.08,"endTime":375.92,"body":"developmental disability can be defined and"},{"startTime":375.92,"endTime":381.2,"body":"has been defined as a lifelong developmental "},{"startTime":375.92,"endTime":381.2,"body":"disability that affects intellectual or cognitive"},{"startTime":381.2,"endTime":385.92,"body":"function. Now that's talking specifically about "},{"startTime":381.2,"endTime":385.92,"body":"intellectual not intellectual and developmental"},{"startTime":385.92,"endTime":393.04,"body":"disabilities. Developmental disabilities is really "},{"startTime":385.92,"endTime":393.04,"body":"a broader term you know so there can be somebody"},{"startTime":393.04,"endTime":400.4,"body":"who has as a very young child has been diagnosed "},{"startTime":393.04,"endTime":400.4,"body":"with cerebral palsy that individual's intellectual"},{"startTime":400.4,"endTime":407.36,"body":"abilities may be genius level but physically "},{"startTime":400.4,"endTime":407.36,"body":"the person is unable to do certain activities"},{"startTime":407.36,"endTime":413.52,"body":"because of the effects of cerebral palsy. If "},{"startTime":407.36,"endTime":413.52,"body":"we're talking about intellectual disabilities,"},{"startTime":413.52,"endTime":418.88,"body":"we're talking about issues that affect "},{"startTime":413.52,"endTime":418.88,"body":"intellectual or cognitive function. You know,"},{"startTime":418.88,"endTime":426.72,"body":"for example, learning, problem solving, reasoning, "},{"startTime":418.88,"endTime":426.72,"body":"and adapting functioning. Interestingly enough,"},{"startTime":426.72,"endTime":430.16,"body":"and this is something that I guess I "},{"startTime":426.72,"endTime":430.16,"body":"was unaware of and I think many people"},{"startTime":430.16,"endTime":440.32,"body":"are unaware of is that about 85% of people "},{"startTime":430.16,"endTime":440.32,"body":"with intellectual disability have mild mild"},{"startTime":440.32,"endTime":444.96,"body":"you know, cognitive impairment. Most of us think "},{"startTime":440.32,"endTime":444.96,"body":"if somebody's got an intellectual disability,"},{"startTime":444.96,"endTime":449.6,"body":"you know, these are people who, you know, can "},{"startTime":444.96,"endTime":449.6,"body":"barely even turn themselves over in bed. Not so."},{"startTime":449.6,"endTime":458.32,"body":"Most people are able to work, have families, and, "},{"startTime":449.6,"endTime":458.32,"body":"you know, if they're given appropriate supports"},{"startTime":458.32,"endTime":463.6,"body":"are able to do very, very well. And again, that's "},{"startTime":458.32,"endTime":463.6,"body":"information that most of us don't know, you know,"},{"startTime":463.6,"endTime":468.8,"body":"and I think that's another example of something "},{"startTime":463.6,"endTime":468.8,"body":"that's really really important for us to consider."},{"startTime":468.8,"endTime":475.36,"body":"Thank you. I think it's important to define "},{"startTime":468.8,"endTime":475.36,"body":"you know the term first. You said there's a"},{"startTime":475.36,"endTime":480.8,"body":"gap in our curricula which I definitely agree. I "},{"startTime":475.36,"endTime":480.8,"body":"remember getting maybe a little piece in pediatric"},{"startTime":480.8,"endTime":485.04,"body":"but definitely not enough. So where do you find "},{"startTime":480.8,"endTime":485.04,"body":"that this content would fit? And we're not just"},{"startTime":485.04,"endTime":491.28,"body":"talking about pre-licensure but also across in "},{"startTime":485.04,"endTime":491.28,"body":"our APRN programs. That that's really a very"},{"startTime":491.28,"endTime":497.6,"body":"interesting question and I would say it fits "},{"startTime":491.28,"endTime":497.6,"body":"anywhere and everywhere. And let me give you"},{"startTime":497.6,"endTime":504.24,"body":"a couple of examples of that. You know, you just "},{"startTime":497.6,"endTime":504.24,"body":"mentioned, Kellie, that when you went to school,"},{"startTime":504.24,"endTime":511.52,"body":"you remember some pediatric content probably "},{"startTime":504.24,"endTime":511.52,"body":"related to IDD. And that's not uncommon,"},{"startTime":511.52,"endTime":519.52,"body":"but it tends to be relatively short, relatively "},{"startTime":511.52,"endTime":519.52,"body":"focused. And if you think about people with IDD,"},{"startTime":519.52,"endTime":525.36,"body":"they grow up to be adults and we don't follow "},{"startTime":519.52,"endTime":525.36,"body":"them through adulthood in terms of what the health"},{"startTime":525.36,"endTime":531.76,"body":"care issues are of them as they go forward. "},{"startTime":525.36,"endTime":531.76,"body":"The other thing about disability in general,"},{"startTime":531.76,"endTime":539.36,"body":"but again IDD specifically is you can integrate "},{"startTime":531.76,"endTime":539.36,"body":"it as I said anywhere and everywhere. Let me give"},{"startTime":539.36,"endTime":546.0,"body":"you a couple of examples. If you think about the "},{"startTime":539.36,"endTime":546.0,"body":"units where you know nursing students learn about"},{"startTime":546.0,"endTime":551.84,"body":"pre-operative and post-operative care you know "},{"startTime":546.0,"endTime":551.84,"body":"for patients undergoing surgery and if you add"},{"startTime":551.84,"endTime":558.32,"body":"to that the element of here's an individual with "},{"startTime":551.84,"endTime":558.32,"body":"IDD facing surgery you know may have some issues"},{"startTime":558.32,"endTime":564.88,"body":"in terms of you know the the noise level or you "},{"startTime":558.32,"endTime":564.88,"body":"know not knowing exactly what's going on not"},{"startTime":564.88,"endTime":573.36,"body":"being told directly what's happening you know "},{"startTime":564.88,"endTime":573.36,"body":"and that's a very potentially very traumatic"},{"startTime":573.36,"endTime":578.48,"body":"experience for somebody with disability. So that's "},{"startTime":573.36,"endTime":578.48,"body":"just one example and there are many others. So as"},{"startTime":578.48,"endTime":585.44,"body":"I say literally it can be placed anywhere and "},{"startTime":578.48,"endTime":585.44,"body":"everywhere. One of the things that we do at"},{"startTime":585.44,"endTime":592.88,"body":"Villanova, and we've been doing this for years, in "},{"startTime":585.44,"endTime":592.88,"body":"the very early part of the undergraduate students"},{"startTime":592.88,"endTime":598.24,"body":"curriculum, there is communication and I think "},{"startTime":592.88,"endTime":598.24,"body":"that exists almost every school of nursing across"},{"startTime":598.24,"endTime":607.76,"body":"the country. In that section on communication, "},{"startTime":598.24,"endTime":607.76,"body":"we start there in terms of how to communicate"},{"startTime":607.76,"endTime":614.96,"body":"with individuals with disability because that's "},{"startTime":607.76,"endTime":614.96,"body":"where it starts. That's just one example. Yeah,"},{"startTime":614.96,"endTime":622.24,"body":"that's a very interesting perspective right "},{"startTime":614.96,"endTime":622.24,"body":"there, Suzanne. And so I would like to kind of"},{"startTime":622.24,"endTime":630.56,"body":"like further explore other than communication and "},{"startTime":622.24,"endTime":630.56,"body":"you also mentioned caring for our patients in the"},{"startTime":630.56,"endTime":639.6,"body":"OR. What would be important to understand? I mean "},{"startTime":630.56,"endTime":639.6,"body":"what content if you will are important in both"},{"startTime":639.6,"endTime":645.68,"body":"graduate and undergraduate curricula? I'm "},{"startTime":639.6,"endTime":645.68,"body":"going to answer that question. So for both"},{"startTime":645.68,"endTime":654.4,"body":"undergraduate and advanced practice RN programs, "},{"startTime":645.68,"endTime":654.4,"body":"both the NLN and the AACN state that care must"},{"startTime":654.4,"endTime":662.24,"body":"be person centered and that focus then should be "},{"startTime":654.4,"endTime":662.24,"body":"demonstrating respect for diversity, differences,"},{"startTime":662.24,"endTime":668.72,"body":"preferences, values, needs, resources, and the "},{"startTime":662.24,"endTime":668.72,"body":"determinants of health that are unique to each"},{"startTime":668.72,"endTime":675.36,"body":"individual. and also that the person should be "},{"startTime":668.72,"endTime":675.36,"body":"a full partner and a source of information in"},{"startTime":675.36,"endTime":682.96,"body":"this team-based care. Also person-centered care "},{"startTime":675.36,"endTime":682.96,"body":"requires the intentional presence of the nurse"},{"startTime":682.96,"endTime":688.16,"body":"who is seeking to understand the individual's "},{"startTime":682.96,"endTime":688.16,"body":"lived experience and their connections with"},{"startTime":688.16,"endTime":694.72,"body":"others including family, significant others, and "},{"startTime":688.16,"endTime":694.72,"body":"their community. And so to that end, persons with"},{"startTime":694.72,"endTime":700.24,"body":"IDD are the same as anybody else. Then they're "},{"startTime":694.72,"endTime":700.24,"body":"individuals. they have unique needs, desires,"},{"startTime":700.24,"endTime":708.48,"body":"preferences. And we as nurses need to understand "},{"startTime":700.24,"endTime":708.48,"body":"that and work with them accordingly. The other key"},{"startTime":708.48,"endTime":713.68,"body":"piece is the effective communication. That is that "},{"startTime":708.48,"endTime":713.68,"body":"is something that's covered in every curriculum"},{"startTime":713.68,"endTime":721.04,"body":"and it includes specific strategies that should be "},{"startTime":713.68,"endTime":721.04,"body":"used when communicating with people with IDD. So,"},{"startTime":721.04,"endTime":726.64,"body":"an example of a common problem that can arise "},{"startTime":721.04,"endTime":726.64,"body":"is the nurse or the other health care provider"},{"startTime":726.64,"endTime":732.4,"body":"will come into the room or space where the "},{"startTime":726.64,"endTime":732.4,"body":"person is and often speak to the caregiver or"},{"startTime":732.4,"endTime":737.92,"body":"the person that is accompanying the person with "},{"startTime":732.4,"endTime":737.92,"body":"IDD rather than speaking directly to the person"},{"startTime":737.92,"endTime":744.4,"body":"who has IDD. And so we believe that this lack of "},{"startTime":737.92,"endTime":744.4,"body":"knowledge on the part of nurses and other health"},{"startTime":744.4,"endTime":752.72,"body":"care providers leads to a lack of comfort and a "},{"startTime":744.4,"endTime":752.72,"body":"lack of confidence on their part and therefore"},{"startTime":752.72,"endTime":761.68,"body":"often ableism and negative attitudes and then that "},{"startTime":752.72,"endTime":761.68,"body":"results in poor health care. So students one other"},{"startTime":761.68,"endTime":767.36,"body":"thing that we feel students should understand "},{"startTime":761.68,"endTime":767.36,"body":"about is a model of disability and there are"},{"startTime":767.36,"endTime":774.64,"body":"models other than the medical model and there are "},{"startTime":767.36,"endTime":774.64,"body":"two that we believe are more well-rounded in the"},{"startTime":774.64,"endTime":779.76,"body":"approach of caring for people with disabilities "},{"startTime":774.64,"endTime":779.76,"body":"and that would be the social model and the"},{"startTime":779.76,"endTime":787.2,"body":"biopsychosocial model of disability and there is a "},{"startTime":779.76,"endTime":787.2,"body":"component on the website in which these models are"},{"startTime":787.2,"endTime":796.4,"body":"discussed and addressed. So people could go and "},{"startTime":787.2,"endTime":796.4,"body":"use that as a reference source. Thank you. So we"},{"startTime":796.4,"endTime":801.12,"body":"may hear from faculty that say I understand this "},{"startTime":796.4,"endTime":801.12,"body":"is important. I understand that this needs to be"},{"startTime":801.12,"endTime":807.68,"body":"threaded throughout the curriculum but I don't "},{"startTime":801.12,"endTime":807.68,"body":"know how to how to do it. So can you tell us a"},{"startTime":807.68,"endTime":813.92,"body":"little bit about the toolkit, IDD toolkit, and "},{"startTime":807.68,"endTime":813.92,"body":"the ACE.D scenarios that you were instrumental"},{"startTime":813.92,"endTime":820.96,"body":"in teaming up with the NLN and creating? How can "},{"startTime":813.92,"endTime":820.96,"body":"faculty utilize these tools? Sure. Yeah. You know,"},{"startTime":820.96,"endTime":825.6,"body":"I think a major issue and we've alluded "},{"startTime":820.96,"endTime":825.6,"body":"to it already is the fact that many of us,"},{"startTime":825.6,"endTime":830.8,"body":"myself included, when we went through nursing "},{"startTime":825.6,"endTime":830.8,"body":"education programs, we didn't have that content."},{"startTime":830.8,"endTime":837.44,"body":"And so, you know, faculty are hesitant, you know, "},{"startTime":830.8,"endTime":837.44,"body":"reluctant to address a topic that they don't know"},{"startTime":837.44,"endTime":844.96,"body":"a whole lot about. The first thing I think is to "},{"startTime":837.44,"endTime":844.96,"body":"you know go into the NLN website and look at the"},{"startTime":844.96,"endTime":850.56,"body":"materials that are there. Read the materials that "},{"startTime":844.96,"endTime":850.56,"body":"are there in order to get some basic education"},{"startTime":850.56,"endTime":858.32,"body":"and preparation in order to then use modules as a "},{"startTime":850.56,"endTime":858.32,"body":"stepping off point in order to teach students. One"},{"startTime":858.32,"endTime":863.68,"body":"of the things that's on the website is a how to. "},{"startTime":858.32,"endTime":863.68,"body":"There's two toolkits. One of them has to do with"},{"startTime":863.68,"endTime":870.56,"body":"IDD and the other one is a toolkit which talks "},{"startTime":863.68,"endTime":870.56,"body":"about integrating disability content in nursing"},{"startTime":870.56,"endTime":877.36,"body":"education. You know, so there are two sources of "},{"startTime":870.56,"endTime":877.36,"body":"attempting to do this. One of the things that we"},{"startTime":877.36,"endTime":883.52,"body":"recommend is going into the website and start with "},{"startTime":877.36,"endTime":883.52,"body":"reading what the you know reading what's in those"},{"startTime":883.52,"endTime":890.8,"body":"modules. The modules include materials, resources, "},{"startTime":883.52,"endTime":890.8,"body":"and teaching strategies for nursing faculty"},{"startTime":890.8,"endTime":896.08,"body":"as well as faculty from the other healthcare "},{"startTime":890.8,"endTime":896.08,"body":"disciplines that can be used in multiple ways. You"},{"startTime":896.08,"endTime":902.88,"body":"know, for example, faculty could assign students "},{"startTime":896.08,"endTime":902.88,"body":"to the materials and then ideally discuss those"},{"startTime":902.88,"endTime":906.56,"body":"materials with them afterwards. One is a virtual simulation which "},{"startTime":923.76,"endTime":931.36,"body":"I'll talk about in just a second and then there's"},{"startTime":931.36,"endTime":939.28,"body":"a simulation that will be done with graduate "},{"startTime":931.36,"endTime":939.28,"body":"students starting this spring. the virtual"},{"startTime":939.28,"endTime":946.8,"body":"simulation stimulated us to develop the materials "},{"startTime":939.28,"endTime":946.8,"body":"that are now up on the NLN website. Villanova is"},{"startTime":946.8,"endTime":954.4,"body":"one of five universities that's part of a grant "},{"startTime":946.8,"endTime":954.4,"body":"and all the other universities involved in this"},{"startTime":954.4,"endTime":959.92,"body":"grant sit on academic health centers campuses and "},{"startTime":954.4,"endTime":959.92,"body":"so if they want to do some interprofessional work"},{"startTime":959.92,"endTime":964.72,"body":"they just have to go downstairs walk outside go "},{"startTime":959.92,"endTime":964.72,"body":"to the building next door and they have a group"},{"startTime":964.72,"endTime":969.84,"body":"of students from other healthcare disciplines. "},{"startTime":964.72,"endTime":969.84,"body":"Villanova is not that way. Villanova's College"},{"startTime":969.84,"endTime":976.16,"body":"of Nursing is the only health profession "},{"startTime":969.84,"endTime":976.16,"body":"on campus. And so as part of this grant,"},{"startTime":976.16,"endTime":982.72,"body":"we needed to develop a method in which we "},{"startTime":976.16,"endTime":982.72,"body":"can address the topic of intellectual and"},{"startTime":982.72,"endTime":989.28,"body":"developmental disabilities and do it using, you "},{"startTime":982.72,"endTime":989.28,"body":"know, the interprofessional team. And so that's"},{"startTime":989.28,"endTime":996.24,"body":"what we've done. um you know is implement this "},{"startTime":989.28,"endTime":996.24,"body":"virtual simulation, interprofessional simulation"},{"startTime":996.24,"endTime":1005.04,"body":"with other health care disciplines from a college "},{"startTime":996.24,"endTime":1005.04,"body":"down the road and with in individuals with IDD"},{"startTime":1005.04,"endTime":1013.36,"body":"participating virtually but participating in "},{"startTime":1005.04,"endTime":1013.36,"body":"the simulation which is critically important"},{"startTime":1013.36,"endTime":1019.04,"body":"you know for them to have an active role in it "},{"startTime":1013.36,"endTime":1019.04,"body":"because that's that's what this is all about."},{"startTime":1019.04,"endTime":1026.08,"body":"So the modules address things like communication "},{"startTime":1019.04,"endTime":1026.08,"body":"you know some of the consequences of you know lack"},{"startTime":1026.08,"endTime":1032.64,"body":"of knowledge colleague mentioned these ableism "},{"startTime":1026.08,"endTime":1032.64,"body":"you know lack of you know lack of ability to"},{"startTime":1032.64,"endTime":1040.96,"body":"communicate appropriately things of that sort. "},{"startTime":1032.64,"endTime":1040.96,"body":"We also have as part of the IDD materials we"},{"startTime":1040.96,"endTime":1048.72,"body":"have IDD what it is and IDD specific health issues "},{"startTime":1040.96,"endTime":1048.72,"body":"you know that are common in individuals with ID."},{"startTime":1048.72,"endTime":1055.44,"body":"You know that as health care professionals all of "},{"startTime":1048.72,"endTime":1055.44,"body":"us need to know about. There are also case studies"},{"startTime":1055.44,"endTime":1062.24,"body":"you know that the students use with a faculty "},{"startTime":1055.44,"endTime":1062.24,"body":"facilitator. We do a two-hour simulation. We've"},{"startTime":1062.24,"endTime":1071.76,"body":"had a number of students from not just nursing but "},{"startTime":1062.24,"endTime":1071.76,"body":"OT, PT, PA programs and pharmacy go through this"},{"startTime":1071.76,"endTime":1080.72,"body":"virtual simulation. That's one approach. Yeah, "},{"startTime":1071.76,"endTime":1080.72,"body":"that's that's a great amount of information there,"},{"startTime":1080.72,"endTime":1087.44,"body":"if you will. As a faculty member, I usually kind "},{"startTime":1080.72,"endTime":1087.44,"body":"of like get excited about resources and toolkits"},{"startTime":1087.44,"endTime":1094.8,"body":"that I have at my disposal as faculty. "},{"startTime":1087.44,"endTime":1094.8,"body":"So, and we acknowledge the value of this"},{"startTime":1094.8,"endTime":1102.64,"body":"particular toolkit and why it's needed. But my "},{"startTime":1094.8,"endTime":1102.64,"body":"question is for faculty who would like to start,"},{"startTime":1102.64,"endTime":1110.16,"body":"what are the first steps? Colleen, do you want to "},{"startTime":1102.64,"endTime":1110.16,"body":"do that or you want me to? I'll start. I think as"},{"startTime":1110.16,"endTime":1115.76,"body":"Suzanne mentioned, the probably the first step is "},{"startTime":1110.16,"endTime":1115.76,"body":"to go in and just read what's available. There are"},{"startTime":1115.76,"endTime":1121.76,"body":"a variety of resources available that give you "},{"startTime":1115.76,"endTime":1121.76,"body":"background information that help you to become"},{"startTime":1121.76,"endTime":1127.44,"body":"knowledgeable very easily because the resources "},{"startTime":1121.76,"endTime":1127.44,"body":"are right there for you and all the research has"},{"startTime":1127.44,"endTime":1133.28,"body":"already been done and it's all incorporated into "},{"startTime":1127.44,"endTime":1133.28,"body":"several documents that are noted. And now the"},{"startTime":1133.28,"endTime":1139.84,"body":"newest thing will be the toolkit which will "},{"startTime":1133.28,"endTime":1139.84,"body":"be very helpful to give some guidance to how"},{"startTime":1139.84,"endTime":1148.48,"body":"to use these resources. Suzanne. Yeah. The only "},{"startTime":1139.84,"endTime":1148.48,"body":"thing I would add is that faculty do not have to,"},{"startTime":1148.48,"endTime":1153.76,"body":"you know, reinvent the wheel, right? The wheel's "},{"startTime":1148.48,"endTime":1153.76,"body":"been developed and created for them. you know,"},{"startTime":1153.76,"endTime":1158.64,"body":"they can take the materials. They don't have "},{"startTime":1153.76,"endTime":1158.64,"body":"to, you know, do it in lock step, but, you know,"},{"startTime":1158.64,"endTime":1164.64,"body":"there are materials that they can adapt and use in "},{"startTime":1158.64,"endTime":1164.64,"body":"their curriculum in order to make sure that when"},{"startTime":1164.64,"endTime":1170.88,"body":"their undergraduate students graduate from their "},{"startTime":1164.64,"endTime":1170.88,"body":"undergraduate program, they know something about"},{"startTime":1170.88,"endTime":1177.84,"body":"IDD and disability in general because very often "},{"startTime":1170.88,"endTime":1177.84,"body":"that is not happening. And more often than not,"},{"startTime":1177.84,"endTime":1186.8,"body":"that is not happening. And for me the question was "},{"startTime":1177.84,"endTime":1186.8,"body":"we have a lot of our nursing students themselves"},{"startTime":1186.8,"endTime":1193.92,"body":"who do have intellectual disabilities and we "},{"startTime":1186.8,"endTime":1193.92,"body":"always kind of like had a back and forth with that"},{"startTime":1193.92,"endTime":1200.4,"body":"amongst faculty how do we deal with this right "},{"startTime":1193.92,"endTime":1200.4,"body":"so and that I have not found like a toolkit like"},{"startTime":1200.4,"endTime":1207.539,"body":"this and I was just like can we find that toolkit "},{"startTime":1200.4,"endTime":1207.539,"body":"too just for how to deal with our own students"},{"startTime":1207.539,"endTime":1214.24,"body":"yeah you know that's interesting that you asked "},{"startTime":1207.539,"endTime":1214.24,"body":"that question. There's a process right now going"},{"startTime":1214.24,"endTime":1220.72,"body":"on to develop a vision statement related to "},{"startTime":1214.24,"endTime":1220.72,"body":"disability. There are two chairs or co-chairs."},{"startTime":1220.72,"endTime":1226.8,"body":"I'm one of the co-chairs and the section that "},{"startTime":1220.72,"endTime":1226.8,"body":"I'm addressing has to do with the curriculum, the"},{"startTime":1226.8,"endTime":1234.56,"body":"kinds of stuff we're talking about today. And the "},{"startTime":1226.8,"endTime":1234.56,"body":"other part of this is chaired by Beth Marx. And"},{"startTime":1234.56,"endTime":1241.2,"body":"that's going to be or yeah it's going to be and it "},{"startTime":1234.56,"endTime":1241.2,"body":"will be addressing students with disabilities you"},{"startTime":1241.2,"endTime":1247.84,"body":"know how we how we recruit them how we accommodate "},{"startTime":1241.2,"endTime":1247.84,"body":"them how we keep them and how we make sure that"},{"startTime":1247.84,"endTime":1254.0,"body":"they are successful you know through the program "},{"startTime":1247.84,"endTime":1254.0,"body":"into you know the workplace and hopefully with the"},{"startTime":1254.0,"endTime":1259.2,"body":"workplace that is better accommodating you know "},{"startTime":1254.0,"endTime":1259.2,"body":"than the current workplaces. So that is something"},{"startTime":1259.2,"endTime":1266.48,"body":"that is coming in the in the future. I just "},{"startTime":1259.2,"endTime":1266.48,"body":"want to add that, you know, having had a lot of"},{"startTime":1266.48,"endTime":1271.36,"body":"students in my career that did have disabilities, "},{"startTime":1266.48,"endTime":1271.36,"body":"I always say we have departments within our"},{"startTime":1271.36,"endTime":1275.6,"body":"university. So, I think that's the first go-to is "},{"startTime":1271.36,"endTime":1275.6,"body":"refer your students to those department so they"},{"startTime":1275.6,"endTime":1280.24,"body":"can have the evaluation and then that department "},{"startTime":1275.6,"endTime":1280.24,"body":"can see what accommodations are needed for the"},{"startTime":1280.24,"endTime":1285.36,"body":"students. I think that's so important. That's "},{"startTime":1280.24,"endTime":1285.36,"body":"that's for students who disclose. Yeah. Because"},{"startTime":1285.36,"endTime":1292.32,"body":"there are students who are afraid to disclose. "},{"startTime":1285.36,"endTime":1292.32,"body":"That's a good point. Yeah. And we need nurses"},{"startTime":1292.32,"endTime":1297.04,"body":"and we don't need to discourage people. And "},{"startTime":1292.32,"endTime":1297.04,"body":"you'd be surprised, you know, what people can"},{"startTime":1297.04,"endTime":1302.8,"body":"accomplish with their certain disabilities. And "},{"startTime":1297.04,"endTime":1302.8,"body":"so it's not up to us to make that judgment call."},{"startTime":1302.8,"endTime":1307.68,"body":"That's why we have experts. And also that's why "},{"startTime":1302.8,"endTime":1307.68,"body":"it's important for us to allow for, you know,"},{"startTime":1307.68,"endTime":1314.4,"body":"to have accommodations. Yeah. I think sometimes, "},{"startTime":1307.68,"endTime":1314.4,"body":"you know, some people come up with the the excuse,"},{"startTime":1314.4,"endTime":1318.64,"body":"you know, faculty, well, they're not going to be "},{"startTime":1314.4,"endTime":1318.64,"body":"able to work in an ICU. Well, maybe they don't"},{"startTime":1318.64,"endTime":1323.84,"body":"want to work at an ICU. That's not part of what "},{"startTime":1318.64,"endTime":1323.84,"body":"their future is. And you know, you've got a sim"},{"startTime":1323.84,"endTime":1328.72,"body":"lab and you can accomplish a lot of things in the "},{"startTime":1323.84,"endTime":1328.72,"body":"sim lab in order to determine whether somebody can"},{"startTime":1328.72,"endTime":1334.56,"body":"take a blood pressure appropriately. They don't "},{"startTime":1328.72,"endTime":1334.56,"body":"have to be in an ICU to do that, you know. So,"},{"startTime":1334.56,"endTime":1339.84,"body":"we need to look at alternative resources. And, "},{"startTime":1334.56,"endTime":1339.84,"body":"and to me, it brings it back to the conversation"},{"startTime":1339.84,"endTime":1349.36,"body":"of equity in in nursing education. And, you're "},{"startTime":1339.84,"endTime":1349.36,"body":"right. A lot of times we sort of like use this"},{"startTime":1349.36,"endTime":1358.08,"body":"knowledge to keep out certain demographics in"},{"startTime":1349.36,"endTime":1358.08,"body":"nursing. But yeah, it's it's really important"},{"startTime":1358.08,"endTime":1365.2,"body":"just like any kind of diversity to have all "},{"startTime":1358.08,"endTime":1365.2,"body":"sorts of disabilities in the nursing profession"},{"startTime":1365.2,"endTime":1371.36,"body":"as well. I think it increases the empathy if "},{"startTime":1365.2,"endTime":1371.36,"body":"you will about what people are experiencing"},{"startTime":1371.36,"endTime":1376.64,"body":"out there. Right. Right. Absolutely. So, what is "},{"startTime":1371.36,"endTime":1376.64,"body":"your message to nursing programs that want to do"},{"startTime":1376.64,"endTime":1383.2,"body":"better in preparing students for taking care of "},{"startTime":1376.64,"endTime":1383.2,"body":"people with intellectual disabilities? What would"},{"startTime":1383.2,"endTime":1391.36,"body":"be like your take-home, you know, tip that you "},{"startTime":1383.2,"endTime":1391.36,"body":"would have a pearl of wisdom for these schools?"},{"startTime":1391.36,"endTime":1396.8,"body":"I think Colleen said it, which is to begin "},{"startTime":1391.36,"endTime":1396.8,"body":"with the modules. The first thing though is"},{"startTime":1396.8,"endTime":1402.08,"body":"you know to get people to understand that they "},{"startTime":1396.8,"endTime":1402.08,"body":"need to go find something in order to you know"},{"startTime":1402.08,"endTime":1411.04,"body":"integrate disability in the curriculum. One of "},{"startTime":1402.08,"endTime":1411.04,"body":"the things that is growing I think in you know"},{"startTime":1411.04,"endTime":1418.0,"body":"sort of across the discipline and across health "},{"startTime":1411.04,"endTime":1418.0,"body":"care professionals is the realization there is"},{"startTime":1418.0,"endTime":1425.2,"body":"this growing group of people with disability. "},{"startTime":1418.0,"endTime":1425.2,"body":"again it's a large group and actually people with"},{"startTime":1425.2,"endTime":1431.76,"body":"disability are considered the largest marginalized "},{"startTime":1425.2,"endTime":1431.76,"body":"group in the country you know so this is important"},{"startTime":1431.76,"endTime":1436.88,"body":"I think another issue is that in terms of "},{"startTime":1431.76,"endTime":1436.88,"body":"disability in general not IDD specifically"},{"startTime":1436.88,"endTime":1443.44,"body":"but disability in general it has been said that "},{"startTime":1436.88,"endTime":1443.44,"body":"disability is a universal experience that will"},{"startTime":1443.44,"endTime":1450.64,"body":"affect every one of us at some time in our lives "},{"startTime":1443.44,"endTime":1450.64,"body":"and that means to me that we need to make sure"},{"startTime":1450.64,"endTime":1458.48,"body":"that health care professionals, including "},{"startTime":1450.64,"endTime":1458.48,"body":"nurses, know how to give proper good care"},{"startTime":1458.48,"endTime":1465.04,"body":"to individuals with disabilities. And that may "},{"startTime":1458.48,"endTime":1465.04,"body":"be a selfish reason, you know, for, you know,"},{"startTime":1465.04,"endTime":1469.92,"body":"for saying I need to make sure that my students "},{"startTime":1465.04,"endTime":1469.92,"body":"know how to care for people with disabilities,"},{"startTime":1469.92,"endTime":1474.96,"body":"but you know what? I'll take it. If that's "},{"startTime":1469.92,"endTime":1474.96,"body":"if that's the primary or the only reason that"},{"startTime":1474.96,"endTime":1482.72,"body":"somebody's doing it, I'll take that. But I think "},{"startTime":1474.96,"endTime":1482.72,"body":"as time goes by I hope that you know there will"},{"startTime":1482.72,"endTime":1491.12,"body":"be an increasing awareness of the need to address "},{"startTime":1482.72,"endTime":1491.12,"body":"the topic of disability in nursing curricula. I"},{"startTime":1491.12,"endTime":1498.16,"body":"have been at this for probably 30 years you know "},{"startTime":1491.12,"endTime":1498.16,"body":"trying to address the topic we do it at Villanova."},{"startTime":1498.16,"endTime":1504.96,"body":"It does happen occur it does happen and occur in a "},{"startTime":1498.16,"endTime":1504.96,"body":"number of schools but not universally and it needs"},{"startTime":1504.96,"endTime":1513.44,"body":"to be universal. It needs to be for everyone, all "},{"startTime":1504.96,"endTime":1513.44,"body":"students, undergraduate and graduate students."},{"startTime":1513.44,"endTime":1518.72,"body":"I think the other the other key piece that's "},{"startTime":1513.44,"endTime":1518.72,"body":"really helpful is that there there are two"},{"startTime":1518.72,"endTime":1524.24,"body":"extended case studies available on the website "},{"startTime":1518.72,"endTime":1524.24,"body":"for people with disabilities and then there are"},{"startTime":1524.24,"endTime":1531.04,"body":"two brief case studies for the people with "},{"startTime":1524.24,"endTime":1531.04,"body":"IDD and each of those addresses a different"},{"startTime":1531.04,"endTime":1536.56,"body":"age group and a different population and setting "},{"startTime":1531.04,"endTime":1536.56,"body":"which I think is really helpful for faculty to"},{"startTime":1536.56,"endTime":1542.48,"body":"be able to pick and choose where they want "},{"startTime":1536.56,"endTime":1542.48,"body":"to put these resources in their curriculum."},{"startTime":1542.48,"endTime":1548.64,"body":"What do you find are the biggest mistakes "},{"startTime":1542.48,"endTime":1548.64,"body":"that nurse educators or nursing programs"},{"startTime":1548.64,"endTime":1555.2,"body":"make around this content in regards to how we "},{"startTime":1548.64,"endTime":1555.2,"body":"view people with intellectual and developmental"},{"startTime":1555.2,"endTime":1562.16,"body":"disabilities or how we teach the content or just "},{"startTime":1555.2,"endTime":1562.16,"body":"the misconceptions about people that have IDD?"},{"startTime":1562.16,"endTime":1572.0,"body":"I think the biggest the biggest misperception "},{"startTime":1562.16,"endTime":1572.0,"body":"I think is that it's it's not that important."},{"startTime":1572.0,"endTime":1581.52,"body":"In 2005 I published the results of a study in "},{"startTime":1572.0,"endTime":1581.52,"body":"which we surveyed nursing deans and directors"},{"startTime":1581.52,"endTime":1587.44,"body":"who asked their faculty members about do we "},{"startTime":1581.52,"endTime":1587.44,"body":"include disability and some of the reasons that"},{"startTime":1587.44,"endTime":1592.08,"body":"people said that they did not include disability "},{"startTime":1587.44,"endTime":1592.08,"body":"in their curriculum were they never thought of"},{"startTime":1592.08,"endTime":1597.52,"body":"it. They never thought of it before. Now that's "},{"startTime":1592.08,"endTime":1597.52,"body":"encouraging because that that means now that they"},{"startTime":1597.52,"endTime":1602.96,"body":"thought about it maybe they will do it. The ones "},{"startTime":1597.52,"endTime":1602.96,"body":"that were not encouraging were these answers. It's"},{"startTime":1602.96,"endTime":1609.04,"body":"not tested on NCLEX. Oh, therefore, we don't teach "},{"startTime":1602.96,"endTime":1609.04,"body":"it. That's very discouraging. That means we got to"},{"startTime":1609.04,"endTime":1617.12,"body":"do something about NCLEX. The other one was it's "},{"startTime":1609.04,"endTime":1617.12,"body":"not very important. Again, this is the largest"},{"startTime":1617.12,"endTime":1624.72,"body":"group of marginalized people in the country. "},{"startTime":1617.12,"endTime":1624.72,"body":"That makes it important. And that everybody"},{"startTime":1624.72,"endTime":1630.48,"body":"in all likelihood will have a disability at some "},{"startTime":1624.72,"endTime":1630.48,"body":"time in their lives. that makes this important,"},{"startTime":1630.48,"endTime":1635.52,"body":"you know. So, for me, those are some of the major "},{"startTime":1630.48,"endTime":1635.52,"body":"issues. People thinking it's it's not worth doing,"},{"startTime":1635.52,"endTime":1639.6,"body":"it's not important, or they'll say"},{"startTime":1635.52,"endTime":1639.6,"body":"that somebody else is doing that. Well,"},{"startTime":1639.6,"endTime":1645.92,"body":"somebody else isn't doing it, you know. So "},{"startTime":1639.6,"endTime":1645.92,"body":"that's that's one of the reasons I think"},{"startTime":1645.92,"endTime":1652.4,"body":"it's so important to integrate it throughout "},{"startTime":1645.92,"endTime":1652.4,"body":"the curriculum, not just a one-shot deal."},{"startTime":1652.4,"endTime":1656.56,"body":"So any last thoughts or anything "},{"startTime":1652.4,"endTime":1656.56,"body":"you'd like to add as we close out"},{"startTime":1656.56,"endTime":1662.56,"body":"this podcast that you'd like to share with our "},{"startTime":1656.56,"endTime":1662.56,"body":"audience? You know, we at Villanova, "},{"startTime":1701.36,"endTime":1708.4,"body":"we have had standardized patients with disability,"},{"startTime":1708.4,"endTime":1715.76,"body":"you know, not actors, but people who have actual "},{"startTime":1708.4,"endTime":1715.76,"body":"disability who have enriched the program so in"},{"startTime":1715.76,"endTime":1724.48,"body":"so many ways. And also you know in the virtual "},{"startTime":1715.76,"endTime":1724.48,"body":"simulation that I mentioned before the individuals"},{"startTime":1724.48,"endTime":1731.2,"body":"who have participated in that online have been "},{"startTime":1724.48,"endTime":1731.2,"body":"individuals with intellectual and developmental"},{"startTime":1731.2,"endTime":1738.24,"body":"disabilities not people pretending to have one an "},{"startTime":1731.2,"endTime":1738.24,"body":"actual disability and that's a really important"},{"startTime":1738.24,"endTime":1744.64,"body":"point I think to take home.
