I think one of the interesting "},{"startTime":71.2,"endTime":75.6,"body":"things I found and I'm sure the readers will be"},{"startTime":75.6,"endTime":81.36,"body":"interested in is especially those listeners who "},{"startTime":75.6,"endTime":81.36,"body":"are not familiar with simulation technology. Walk"},{"startTime":81.36,"endTime":86.72,"body":"us through how AI enhanced manikins differ "},{"startTime":81.36,"endTime":86.72,"body":"from traditional high-fidelity manikins. I'm"},{"startTime":86.72,"endTime":90.48,"body":"really especially curious about what's the "},{"startTime":86.72,"endTime":90.48,"body":"difference in terms of learner interaction,"},{"startTime":90.48,"endTime":96.8,"body":"faculty training requirements, and the overall "},{"startTime":90.48,"endTime":96.8,"body":"cost investment. It's a great question. So we"},{"startTime":96.8,"endTime":104.0,"body":"know high-fidelity manikins today, right, are are "},{"startTime":96.8,"endTime":104.0,"body":"have a high level of realism. So they can blink,"},{"startTime":104.0,"endTime":109.68,"body":"they have heart sounds, they have lung sounds. "},{"startTime":104.0,"endTime":109.68,"body":"There is typically somebody speaking for the"},{"startTime":109.68,"endTime":116.16,"body":"patient, either a faculty or a sim tech. So the "},{"startTime":109.68,"endTime":116.16,"body":"AI-enhanced manikins adds a different layer to"},{"startTime":116.16,"endTime":121.84,"body":"that. So there's still high fidelity, so it does "},{"startTime":116.16,"endTime":121.84,"body":"everything that your regular high-fidelity manikin"},{"startTime":121.84,"endTime":129.2,"body":"can do, but then adds on things that make it more "},{"startTime":121.84,"endTime":129.2,"body":"autonomous, responsive and a bit more realistic."},{"startTime":129.2,"endTime":135.68,"body":"So typically your scenarios are pre-programmed, "},{"startTime":129.2,"endTime":135.68,"body":"you are running them, there's some sort of learner"},{"startTime":135.68,"endTime":142.08,"body":"interaction, and your faculty or your sim might "},{"startTime":135.68,"endTime":142.08,"body":"change what's happening, right, based on what"},{"startTime":142.08,"endTime":148.8,"body":"the learner does. So now you have an AI manikin "},{"startTime":142.08,"endTime":148.8,"body":"that is much more a patient and you're having"},{"startTime":148.8,"endTime":156.24,"body":"natural conversation with it. So your patient is "},{"startTime":148.8,"endTime":156.24,"body":"responding as if your real patient does. So it's"},{"startTime":156.24,"endTime":161.68,"body":"not necessarily pre-programmed. And of course "},{"startTime":156.24,"endTime":161.68,"body":"there's some pros and cons to that, right? So"},{"startTime":161.68,"endTime":169.36,"body":"often times we're like very ready that the patient "},{"startTime":161.68,"endTime":169.36,"body":"is going to say this. These AI-enhanced manikins"},{"startTime":169.36,"endTime":174.16,"body":"may say that or they may choose that they want "},{"startTime":169.36,"endTime":174.16,"body":"to say something different depending on the day"},{"startTime":174.16,"endTime":180.56,"body":"and what that looks like. They are also a bit "},{"startTime":174.16,"endTime":180.56,"body":"more realistic in their movement. So, in the one"},{"startTime":180.56,"endTime":187.04,"body":"that we have and that the study that we did, you "},{"startTime":180.56,"endTime":187.04,"body":"will tell him to shake the patient's hand and it"},{"startTime":187.04,"endTime":194.48,"body":"actually raises up its arm and shakes your hand. "},{"startTime":187.04,"endTime":194.48,"body":"So, we have never seen anything like that. Their"},{"startTime":195.2,"endTime":202.08,"body":"facial droops and makes it a lot more realistic "},{"startTime":195.2,"endTime":202.08,"body":"in terms of when a patient is having a stroke."},{"startTime":202.08,"endTime":208.24,"body":"So just the level of realism is much higher "},{"startTime":202.08,"endTime":208.24,"body":"with these AI enhanced manikins than what we"},{"startTime":208.24,"endTime":215.36,"body":"have become accustomed to. With that obviously "},{"startTime":208.24,"endTime":215.36,"body":"becomes more training. So now as a faculty you"},{"startTime":215.36,"endTime":221.92,"body":"have to design a much more learner centered "},{"startTime":215.36,"endTime":221.92,"body":"experience, right? So it's not as clear-cut"},{"startTime":221.92,"endTime":227.12,"body":"what may happen. And so you're anticipating "},{"startTime":221.92,"endTime":227.12,"body":"what the learner may do, but you're also now"},{"startTime":227.12,"endTime":233.28,"body":"anticipating what your patient may do. And as "},{"startTime":227.12,"endTime":233.28,"body":"you are in real life, you can't always anticipate"},{"startTime":233.28,"endTime":239.36,"body":"what your patient is going to do. So it makes it "},{"startTime":233.28,"endTime":239.36,"body":"for a different experience and the faculty and I"},{"startTime":239.36,"endTime":245.28,"body":"have to learn how do you go along with that when "},{"startTime":239.36,"endTime":245.28,"body":"your patient isn't doing something and still make"},{"startTime":245.28,"endTime":251.12,"body":"it a meaningful experience for your learners. "},{"startTime":245.28,"endTime":251.12,"body":"I think the learners have to experience that"},{"startTime":251.12,"endTime":256.8,"body":"differently. When we take them from one manikin "},{"startTime":251.12,"endTime":256.8,"body":"to the other and they notice the difference, it"},{"startTime":256.8,"endTime":261.84,"body":"is a huge difference. That was one of the things "},{"startTime":256.8,"endTime":261.84,"body":"that we really highlighted on in the first round"},{"startTime":261.84,"endTime":267.44,"body":"of this study is that your pre-brief is always "},{"startTime":261.84,"endTime":267.44,"body":"important, but the pre-brief here is almost even"},{"startTime":267.44,"endTime":273.84,"body":"more important because we needed to let it know "},{"startTime":267.44,"endTime":273.84,"body":"this is what this manikin can do, which is very"},{"startTime":273.84,"endTime":280.24,"body":"different than what they had been accustomed to "},{"startTime":273.84,"endTime":280.24,"body":"in the past. So it makes it a much more realistic"},{"startTime":280.24,"endTime":286.08,"body":"experience. It does take longer to prepare for "},{"startTime":280.24,"endTime":286.08,"body":"a scenario with that. There's more training for"},{"startTime":286.08,"endTime":292.96,"body":"your faculty. And it goes without saying that "},{"startTime":286.08,"endTime":292.96,"body":"the cost is definitely more with these manikins"},{"startTime":292.96,"endTime":298.88,"body":"than sure with the traditional manikin. So, you "},{"startTime":292.96,"endTime":298.88,"body":"really do have to decide, right? Is it the right"},{"startTime":298.88,"endTime":305.36,"body":"one based on where you are at your facility and "},{"startTime":298.88,"endTime":305.36,"body":"what resources you have? Were students surprised"},{"startTime":305.36,"endTime":313.68,"body":"when they first encountered this manikin? Was "},{"startTime":305.36,"endTime":313.68,"body":"it like some like how interactive it was? Beth,"},{"startTime":313.68,"endTime":322.48,"body":"you want to answer that? You were in the room with "},{"startTime":313.68,"endTime":322.48,"body":"them. I would say yes. They were so as like I said"},{"startTime":322.48,"endTime":330.0,"body":"they completed the pre-brief but until you're "},{"startTime":322.48,"endTime":330.0,"body":"actually in the room and Emory how is actually"},{"startTime":330.0,"endTime":337.36,"body":"talking back to the students the one student kind "},{"startTime":330.0,"endTime":337.36,"body":"of jumped back you know he's like oh like he he"},{"startTime":337.36,"endTime":347.76,"body":"wasn't ready for somebody to talk back to him "},{"startTime":337.36,"endTime":347.76,"body":"or when he when the students the postlicensure"},{"startTime":347.76,"endTime":355.36,"body":"scenario was done with our nurse anesthesia "},{"startTime":347.76,"endTime":355.36,"body":"students. And so that opioid scenario is going"},{"startTime":355.36,"endTime":363.92,"body":"to involve them ultimately having to intubate "},{"startTime":355.36,"endTime":363.92,"body":"Emory how they were asking Emory Hal questions"},{"startTime":363.92,"endTime":370.32,"body":"and as as like I said he had a script but "},{"startTime":363.92,"endTime":370.32,"body":"he went off script and you know this the"},{"startTime":370.32,"endTime":377.52,"body":"one student said that's not what you're "},{"startTime":370.32,"endTime":377.52,"body":"supposed to say and it's it's interesting"},{"startTime":377.52,"endTime":381.52,"body":"that sounds interesting. In your article, "},{"startTime":377.52,"endTime":381.52,"body":"you talk about the return on investment,"},{"startTime":381.52,"endTime":386.8,"body":"which is of course a big consideration for "},{"startTime":381.52,"endTime":386.8,"body":"nursing programs. Based on your experience so far,"},{"startTime":386.8,"endTime":391.84,"body":"do you feel the investment in the AI enhanced "},{"startTime":386.8,"endTime":391.84,"body":"manikins has paid off or would you advise schools"},{"startTime":391.84,"endTime":396.08,"body":"to be cautious and wait until the technology "},{"startTime":391.84,"endTime":396.08,"body":"and evidence base mature a little bit more?"},{"startTime":396.72,"endTime":403.36,"body":"So I think like alluded to this that you know "},{"startTime":396.72,"endTime":403.36,"body":"cost is another important distinction and that"},{"startTime":403.36,"endTime":409.76,"body":"the AI-enabled manikins are significantly more "},{"startTime":403.36,"endTime":409.76,"body":"expensive than the traditional high fidelity"},{"startTime":409.76,"endTime":417.04,"body":"simulators. And in addition to the cost of "},{"startTime":409.76,"endTime":417.04,"body":"the equipment, there's ongoing cost related"},{"startTime":417.04,"endTime":423.68,"body":"to software and updates and training. So if you "},{"startTime":417.04,"endTime":423.68,"body":"think something's going to cost X, you really need"},{"startTime":423.68,"endTime":431.12,"body":"to budget for more of that. related to return "},{"startTime":423.68,"endTime":431.12,"body":"on investment in simulation. I see that that's"},{"startTime":431.12,"endTime":439.6,"body":"always context dependent. Schools with robust "},{"startTime":431.12,"endTime":439.6,"body":"simulation infrastructures and dedicated faculty"},{"startTime":439.6,"endTime":446.96,"body":"and a clear integration plan are more likely to "},{"startTime":439.6,"endTime":446.96,"body":"see value more quickly than programs with limited"},{"startTime":446.96,"endTime":455.44,"body":"resources. So I think that's a consideration in "},{"startTime":446.96,"endTime":455.44,"body":"talking about return on investment. Our experience"},{"startTime":455.44,"endTime":463.52,"body":"suggests that AI enhanced simulation has strong "},{"startTime":455.44,"endTime":463.52,"body":"educational potential particularly for developing"},{"startTime":463.52,"endTime":472.0,"body":"clinical judgment, communication and content where "},{"startTime":463.52,"endTime":472.0,"body":"maybe faculty expertise might be limited. And it"},{"startTime":472.0,"endTime":482.16,"body":"also offers a strategy to extend faculty capacity "},{"startTime":472.0,"endTime":482.16,"body":"which is a growing concern in nursing. But again,"},{"startTime":482.16,"endTime":492.96,"body":"I would say that technology is just evolving so "},{"startTime":482.16,"endTime":492.96,"body":"rapidly that the most important recommendation is"},{"startTime":492.96,"endTime":501.12,"body":"to move forward with being open but intentionally "},{"startTime":492.96,"endTime":501.12,"body":"cautious. Schools should do their due diligence,"},{"startTime":501.12,"endTime":508.48,"body":"align their per purchases with curricular goals. "},{"startTime":501.12,"endTime":508.48,"body":"And I think sometimes when we see a new shiny"},{"startTime":508.48,"endTime":515.2,"body":"piece of equipment, it's we want it, we want it, "},{"startTime":508.48,"endTime":515.2,"body":"we want it, but have we really considered where"},{"startTime":515.2,"endTime":525.76,"body":"it fits with our curricular goals? How scalable is "},{"startTime":515.2,"endTime":525.76,"body":"it? And are there other low-cost AI solutions be"},{"startTime":525.76,"endTime":538.08,"body":"before investing in a single high-cost platform? "},{"startTime":525.76,"endTime":538.08,"body":"because with everything being evolving so quickly,"},{"startTime":538.08,"endTime":544.32,"body":"I'm not saying the equipment is obsolete, but "},{"startTime":538.08,"endTime":544.32,"body":"there's so many more solutions now available"},{"startTime":545.04,"endTime":552.4,"body":"that may not cost the same. So, I'd say the "},{"startTime":545.04,"endTime":552.4,"body":"value is really not in a specific manikin,"},{"startTime":552.4,"endTime":558.72,"body":"but it's really in the thoughtful integration "},{"startTime":552.4,"endTime":558.72,"body":"of AI supported simulation and really being"},{"startTime":558.72,"endTime":566.56,"body":"responsible stewards of resources that each of "},{"startTime":558.72,"endTime":566.56,"body":"our schools has. Well, can I ask then what what"},{"startTime":566.56,"endTime":571.52,"body":"got you guys to that place where you decided "},{"startTime":566.56,"endTime":571.52,"body":"this was the technology you wanted to use?"},{"startTime":573.2,"endTime":581.28,"body":"So we were building a new simulation "},{"startTime":573.2,"endTime":581.28,"body":"center, you know, the 70,000 square foot,"},{"startTime":581.28,"endTime":588.0,"body":"state-of-the-art state of the science simulation "},{"startTime":581.28,"endTime":588.0,"body":"center. And our opening was going to be in the"},{"startTime":588.0,"endTime":597.76,"body":"fall of 2022. And some of our faculty and team "},{"startTime":588.0,"endTime":597.76,"body":"went to a conference and saw this manikin and"},{"startTime":597.76,"endTime":606.64,"body":"came back and said to our dean, \"We have to have "},{"startTime":597.76,"endTime":606.64,"body":"it. We have to have it.\" And so the dean said,"},{"startTime":606.64,"endTime":618.0,"body":"\"Fine, buy it.\" Wow. And Emory Hal showed up, I "},{"startTime":606.64,"endTime":618.0,"body":"think, three days before our grand opening. and"},{"startTime":618.0,"endTime":628.08,"body":"every house kind of became the centerpiece of the "},{"startTime":618.0,"endTime":628.08,"body":"opening, of course. And it was this has this is"},{"startTime":628.08,"endTime":635.84,"body":"great. Nobody else has it. We have to have it for "},{"startTime":628.08,"endTime":635.84,"body":"our opening. And that's kind of how it it went,"},{"startTime":635.84,"endTime":639.2,"body":"right? I think it's very relatable then, right? "},{"startTime":635.84,"endTime":639.2,"body":"Because this is what's going to happen. I'm going"},{"startTime":639.2,"endTime":643.6,"body":"to go downstairs after this podcast and talk to "},{"startTime":639.2,"endTime":643.6,"body":"my simulation director and say, \"Look into this."},{"startTime":643.6,"endTime":648.48,"body":"I want one of these AI manikins.\" So, I mean, "},{"startTime":643.6,"endTime":648.48,"body":"I think that's kind of how those things start,"},{"startTime":648.48,"endTime":652.08,"body":"right? You get interested in something, the "},{"startTime":648.48,"endTime":652.08,"body":"new technology, it's shiny and new. Sometimes"},{"startTime":652.08,"endTime":655.92,"body":"it doesn't go the right way because it we don't "},{"startTime":652.08,"endTime":655.92,"body":"really need it. And sometimes it turns out to be"},{"startTime":655.92,"endTime":660.88,"body":"a great thing, which sounds like from your work, "},{"startTime":655.92,"endTime":660.88,"body":"this is turning out to be a great thing. So,"},{"startTime":660.88,"endTime":668.96,"body":"I'll defer to Laika and Nick since they're in "},{"startTime":660.88,"endTime":668.96,"body":"memory. I was going to add that I think you're"},{"startTime":668.96,"endTime":674.48,"body":"absolutely right because it happens all the time. "},{"startTime":668.96,"endTime":674.48,"body":"We all go to conferences and we wowed like we are"},{"startTime":674.48,"endTime":680.32,"body":"like oh this is great we need to have this and "},{"startTime":674.48,"endTime":680.32,"body":"we think that we have so many ways that we can"},{"startTime":680.32,"endTime":685.92,"body":"use it right and then you you get into it and you "},{"startTime":680.32,"endTime":685.92,"body":"think about oh do we really can we really use this"},{"startTime":685.92,"endTime":690.4,"body":"right what does that look like so I do think our "},{"startTime":685.92,"endTime":690.4,"body":"recommendation is you know sometimes you have to"},{"startTime":690.4,"endTime":698.64,"body":"pause and look at that but I think even for us "},{"startTime":690.4,"endTime":698.64,"body":"the the advertising and the marketing that we"},{"startTime":698.64,"endTime":704.4,"body":"were able to do with that right the ability that "},{"startTime":698.64,"endTime":704.4,"body":"we were able to say, hey, we do have something,"},{"startTime":704.4,"endTime":711.12,"body":"right, that can possibly make a big educational "},{"startTime":704.4,"endTime":711.12,"body":"impact to our learners and to others and and look"},{"startTime":711.12,"endTime":717.6,"body":"at what Emory is doing with simulation and "},{"startTime":711.12,"endTime":717.6,"body":"others. I think that alone is is a good ROI,"},{"startTime":717.6,"endTime":724.16,"body":"right? to be able to show that we are always "},{"startTime":717.6,"endTime":724.16,"body":"looking at and always investing in things that"},{"startTime":724.16,"endTime":728.72,"body":"are going to be helpful for their education and "},{"startTime":724.16,"endTime":728.72,"body":"for other faculty to notice that yeah you know"},{"startTime":728.72,"endTime":735.04,"body":"what Emory is willing to invest in things as it "},{"startTime":728.72,"endTime":735.04,"body":"makes sense to the program and that makes me think"},{"startTime":735.04,"endTime":739.68,"body":"of your comment Dr. Palazzo around the evidence "},{"startTime":735.04,"endTime":739.68,"body":"base and I think this gives a lot of credit to"},{"startTime":740.24,"endTime":745.36,"body":"you know Dean Swan and Dean Steiger at the time "},{"startTime":740.24,"endTime":745.36,"body":"like we have the infrastructure to do some really"},{"startTime":745.36,"endTime":752.88,"body":"cool research in a way that other institutions "},{"startTime":745.36,"endTime":752.88,"body":"other teams may not be able to build study around"},{"startTime":752.88,"endTime":757.92,"body":"this kind of new technology and expect to just "},{"startTime":752.88,"endTime":757.92,"body":"be plopped in and you know figure it out on the"},{"startTime":757.92,"endTime":764.96,"body":"fly. And so this you know article is really I "},{"startTime":757.92,"endTime":764.96,"body":"think a nice roadmap for others and for our own"},{"startTime":764.96,"endTime":768.64,"body":"team when we think about the future direction of "},{"startTime":764.96,"endTime":768.64,"body":"whether it's this technology or other AI-enabled"},{"startTime":768.64,"endTime":773.12,"body":"technologies and simulation the future how "},{"startTime":768.64,"endTime":773.12,"body":"could we really be purposeful once we have"},{"startTime":773.12,"endTime":779.44,"body":"these kind of really cool innovative devices "},{"startTime":773.12,"endTime":779.44,"body":"in our education space and engage team members"},{"startTime":779.44,"endTime":784.32,"body":"to look at you know not only learner relevant "},{"startTime":779.44,"endTime":784.32,"body":"outcomes around knowledge and attitudes in certain"},{"startTime":784.32,"endTime":788.64,"body":"simulation experiences just like we would with "},{"startTime":784.32,"endTime":788.64,"body":"high fidelity simulation but also what does that"},{"startTime":788.64,"endTime":793.28,"body":"look like for their experience? You know, what do "},{"startTime":788.64,"endTime":793.28,"body":"they like? What don't they like? And I just feel"},{"startTime":793.28,"endTime":799.2,"body":"so privileged that we had the resources, time, and "},{"startTime":793.28,"endTime":799.2,"body":"expertise as a collected team to come together and"},{"startTime":799.2,"endTime":804.16,"body":"design a study around it. And you know, that's "},{"startTime":799.2,"endTime":804.16,"body":"just step one of a long series of studies we'll"},{"startTime":804.16,"endTime":808.96,"body":"be doing in the simulation space. And soon "},{"startTime":804.16,"endTime":808.96,"body":"we may be asking the manikin's experience,"},{"startTime":808.96,"endTime":815.28,"body":"right? From their perspective, that'd be an "},{"startTime":808.96,"endTime":815.28,"body":"interesting good study, right? Looking ahead,"},{"startTime":815.28,"endTime":819.6,"body":"how do you see this technology being used moving "},{"startTime":815.28,"endTime":819.6,"body":"forward in your program? And based on the students"},{"startTime":819.6,"endTime":824.4,"body":"survey results, what specific changes have you "},{"startTime":819.6,"endTime":824.4,"body":"made or are planning to make and how the AI"},{"startTime":824.4,"endTime":830.16,"body":"manikins are implemented in teaching and learning? "},{"startTime":824.4,"endTime":830.16,"body":"So I think we had a lot of good feedback and when"},{"startTime":830.16,"endTime":835.28,"body":"we looked at the results that the study was done "},{"startTime":830.16,"endTime":835.28,"body":"on both prelicensure students and postlicensure"},{"startTime":835.28,"endTime":841.2,"body":"students and I think one of the the big lessons "},{"startTime":835.28,"endTime":841.2,"body":"that we had out of that is that ensuring as we"},{"startTime":841.2,"endTime":846.72,"body":"know it's a best practice that the technology "},{"startTime":841.2,"endTime":846.72,"body":"matches the learner where they are at right and"},{"startTime":846.72,"endTime":853.04,"body":"that it's going to be the best learning experience "},{"startTime":846.72,"endTime":853.04,"body":"for them and so for us realizing that we needed to"},{"startTime":853.04,"endTime":858.16,"body":"focus it more on our postlicensure students "},{"startTime":853.04,"endTime":858.16,"body":"who were ready for that level of learning,"},{"startTime":858.16,"endTime":863.6,"body":"right? Who we were expecting to have more of "},{"startTime":858.16,"endTime":863.6,"body":"those conversations or even with our pre-licensure"},{"startTime":863.6,"endTime":869.76,"body":"students who are further along in the program. And so we realize that some of"},{"startTime":906.64,"endTime":913.52,"body":"the functionality in AI, that conversation piece "},{"startTime":906.64,"endTime":913.52,"body":"is critical, not necessarily with that AI manikin,"},{"startTime":913.52,"endTime":918.32,"body":"but that there are other ways that we can look at "},{"startTime":913.52,"endTime":918.32,"body":"it and say that we need to be adding some more of"},{"startTime":918.32,"endTime":924.08,"body":"that natural conversation with almost all of the "},{"startTime":918.32,"endTime":924.08,"body":"scenarios that we do.
