During her childhood,  "},{"startTime":74.4,"endTime":79.28,"body":"despite Georgia's strict laws against "},{"startTime":74.4,"endTime":79.28,"body":"formal education of African Americans,  "},{"startTime":79.84,"endTime":86.56,"body":"Susie's grandmother sent Susie and her brother "},{"startTime":79.84,"endTime":86.56,"body":"to be educated through an underground education  "},{"startTime":86.56,"endTime":93.76,"body":"system taught by free women of color. Early on she used her "},{"startTime":101.68,"endTime":109.12,"body":"skill to both educate other African Americans  "},{"startTime":109.12,"endTime":116.4,"body":"and keep them safe. As an example, she was known "},{"startTime":109.12,"endTime":116.4,"body":"to write security passes for those who might be  "},{"startTime":116.4,"endTime":120.4,"body":"out after curfews to keep "},{"startTime":116.4,"endTime":120.4,"body":"them from being arrested.  "},{"startTime":121.76,"endTime":128.56,"body":"At the age of 14 the chaos of the Civil War "},{"startTime":121.76,"endTime":128.56,"body":"provided an opportunity for Susie to flee the  "},{"startTime":128.56,"endTime":137.36,"body":"south and become free when she followed her uncle "},{"startTime":128.56,"endTime":137.36,"body":"to safety behind Union lines. She joined the 33rd  "},{"startTime":137.36,"endTime":144.72,"body":"United States Colored Infantry Regiment and worked "},{"startTime":137.36,"endTime":144.72,"body":"in a number of capacities from laundress to cook.  "},{"startTime":145.76,"endTime":153.36,"body":"During the Civil War she also was asked to help "},{"startTime":145.76,"endTime":153.36,"body":"in the capacity of a nurse. Beyond her work as a nurse "},{"startTime":176.64,"endTime":184.16,"body":"tending to the sick and wounded soldiers,  "},{"startTime":184.16,"endTime":190.0,"body":"her ability to read and her thoughtful "},{"startTime":184.16,"endTime":190.0,"body":"instruction proved valuable to the soldiers.  "},{"startTime":191.2,"endTime":198.16,"body":"As the first African American woman to "},{"startTime":191.2,"endTime":198.16,"body":"serve as a nurse during the Civil War, she  "},{"startTime":198.16,"endTime":204.32,"body":"also was the first African American woman to "},{"startTime":198.16,"endTime":204.32,"body":"publish a memoir of her wartime experiences:  "},{"startTime":205.12,"endTime":214.4,"body":"Reminiscences of My Life in Camp with the 33rd "},{"startTime":205.12,"endTime":214.4,"body":"United States Colored Troops. After the Civil  "},{"startTime":214.4,"endTime":222.72,"body":"War ended in 1865, Susie and her husband, "},{"startTime":214.4,"endTime":222.72,"body":"Sergeant Edward King, returned to Savannah.  "},{"startTime":223.36,"endTime":231.44,"body":"It was there that they opened a school for African "},{"startTime":223.36,"endTime":231.44,"body":"American children and an adult night school. This  "},{"startTime":231.44,"endTime":238.32,"body":"garnered her a prominent teaching role where she "},{"startTime":231.44,"endTime":238.32,"body":"would teach children by day and adults by night.  "},{"startTime":239.28,"endTime":244.72,"body":"She was known to have opened many schools that "},{"startTime":239.28,"endTime":244.72,"body":"eventually would close as the importance of  "},{"startTime":244.72,"endTime":252.56,"body":"education grew and she was not able to make a "},{"startTime":244.72,"endTime":252.56,"body":"living providing private education. Her husband  "},{"startTime":252.56,"endTime":262.72,"body":"Edward King died in 1866 shortly after they had "},{"startTime":252.56,"endTime":262.72,"body":"relocated to Savannah. She married again in 1870  "},{"startTime":262.72,"endTime":269.44,"body":"after traveling to Boston as a domestic servant "},{"startTime":262.72,"endTime":269.44,"body":"when she could no longer find work as a teacher.  "},{"startTime":270.16,"endTime":275.92,"body":"It was in that capacity that she met "},{"startTime":270.16,"endTime":275.92,"body":"her second husband, Russell L. The purpose of the corps was to  "},{"startTime":285.52,"endTime":291.92,"body":"assist in providing for the housing and care "},{"startTime":285.52,"endTime":291.92,"body":"needs of women nurses from the Civil War who  "},{"startTime":291.92,"endTime":300.08,"body":"were either destitute or ill. Susie, once again "},{"startTime":291.92,"endTime":300.08,"body":"driven by her gracious contributions to humanity,  "},{"startTime":300.08,"endTime":309.84,"body":"organized Corps 67 as a chapter of the Women's "},{"startTime":300.08,"endTime":309.84,"body":"Relief Corps in 1886 to drive this service work. "},{"startTime":311.6,"endTime":319.2,"body":"Susie left a legacy that continues today in "},{"startTime":311.6,"endTime":319.2,"body":"her hometown of Savannah. The Susie King Taylor  "},{"startTime":319.2,"endTime":327.92,"body":"Community School in Savannah is a tuition-free "},{"startTime":319.2,"endTime":327.92,"body":"public K-8 charter school.
