During her upbringing, "},{"startTime":91.6,"endTime":98.8,"body":"Jamaica was part of the British Empire. British  "},{"startTime":98.8,"endTime":104.72,"body":"soldiers were stationed on the island and it "},{"startTime":98.8,"endTime":104.72,"body":"was written that a Scottish military officer  "},{"startTime":104.72,"endTime":110.88,"body":"had fallen in love with Mary's mother, who was a "},{"startTime":104.72,"endTime":110.88,"body":"free woman running a boarding house in Kingston.  "},{"startTime":111.76,"endTime":116.4,"body":"Her mother was also a \"doctress\" "},{"startTime":111.76,"endTime":116.4,"body":"who practiced traditional healing. "},{"startTime":117.12,"endTime":123.44,"body":"As a young girl, Mary would follow her mom's "},{"startTime":117.12,"endTime":123.44,"body":"footsteps and practice traditional healing on  "},{"startTime":123.44,"endTime":130.64,"body":"her pets and her dolls. A local patroness was "},{"startTime":123.44,"endTime":130.64,"body":"quite taken with Mary's intelligence as a girl  "},{"startTime":130.64,"endTime":137.52,"body":"and she promised to provide a good education "},{"startTime":130.64,"endTime":137.52,"body":"for Mary. With the influence of British troops,  "},{"startTime":137.52,"endTime":144.88,"body":"Mary would travel to England with her patroness "},{"startTime":137.52,"endTime":144.88,"body":"to sell West Indian spices. With the money that  "},{"startTime":144.88,"endTime":151.04,"body":"she earned, she was able to stay in England to "},{"startTime":144.88,"endTime":151.04,"body":"further develop her traditional healing skills. "},{"startTime":152.0,"endTime":159.44,"body":"Mary also traveled around the Caribbean serving as "},{"startTime":152.0,"endTime":159.44,"body":"a doctress. It was on her native island that she  "},{"startTime":159.44,"endTime":167.44,"body":"met and married Edwin Horatio Hamilton Seacole. "},{"startTime":159.44,"endTime":167.44,"body":"They were only married for eight years before he  "},{"startTime":167.44,"endTime":175.44,"body":"died. Sadly, she also lost her mother shortly "},{"startTime":167.44,"endTime":175.44,"body":"thereafter, and then lost her home to a fire  "},{"startTime":175.44,"endTime":182.72,"body":"that had engulfed the whole of Kingston, Jamaica."},{"startTime":175.44,"endTime":182.72,"body":"Mary, steadfast in her efforts to continue in her  "},{"startTime":182.72,"endTime":189.04,"body":"mother's tradition, rebuilt her home and brought "},{"startTime":182.72,"endTime":189.04,"body":"in soldiers and their wives as paying guests.  "},{"startTime":190.0,"endTime":198.32,"body":"Mary's reputation as a healer preceded her. With "},{"startTime":190.0,"endTime":198.32,"body":"her skills as a doctress, she was called upon to  "},{"startTime":198.32,"endTime":207.36,"body":"assist the many victims of the cholera epidemic "},{"startTime":198.32,"endTime":207.36,"body":"in Jamaica and throughout Panama. In 1857, an  "},{"startTime":207.36,"endTime":214.96,"body":"autobiography was published titled, \"The Wonderful "},{"startTime":207.36,"endTime":214.96,"body":"adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands.\" "},{"startTime":216.48,"endTime":222.64,"body":"When yellow fever raged through Jamaica and other "},{"startTime":216.48,"endTime":222.64,"body":"Caribbean islands, British military authorities  "},{"startTime":222.64,"endTime":229.12,"body":"called upon Mary to gather other Jamaican "},{"startTime":222.64,"endTime":229.12,"body":"nurses. With Mary's experiences addressing  "},{"startTime":229.12,"endTime":234.64,"body":"the care needs during cholera, she worked "},{"startTime":229.12,"endTime":234.64,"body":"with these nurses to focus on cleanliness.  "},{"startTime":235.68,"endTime":241.84,"body":"Mary's success with these efforts made her "},{"startTime":235.68,"endTime":241.84,"body":"especially valuable to assist the British during  "},{"startTime":241.84,"endTime":250.72,"body":"the Crimean War in 1854. She went to England and "},{"startTime":241.84,"endTime":250.72,"body":"sought employment as a nurse, but was turned down.  "},{"startTime":251.6,"endTime":258.4,"body":"Matters of racial discrimination were prevalent "},{"startTime":251.6,"endTime":258.4,"body":"and controversy exists today about her interaction  "},{"startTime":258.4,"endTime":266.32,"body":"with Florence Nightingale and her quest to assist "},{"startTime":258.4,"endTime":266.32,"body":"as a nurse during the Crimean War. Nightingale was  "},{"startTime":266.32,"endTime":272.72,"body":"firm that Mary could not join her staff as she "},{"startTime":266.32,"endTime":272.72,"body":"had not been trained as a \"Nightingale nurse.\" "},{"startTime":274.4,"endTime":280.8,"body":"Despite this disappointment, she persevered. "},{"startTime":274.4,"endTime":280.8,"body":"Mary set up her own establishment called Spring  "},{"startTime":280.8,"endTime":288.56,"body":"Hill - a hotel for soldiers and sightseers. She "},{"startTime":280.8,"endTime":288.56,"body":"went directly to the front lines during the war  "},{"startTime":288.56,"endTime":296.08,"body":"to minister to the sick and wounded. Many soldiers "},{"startTime":288.56,"endTime":296.08,"body":"knew her as Mother Seacole and sought her out at  "},{"startTime":296.08,"endTime":303.84,"body":"the hotel instead of going to the hospital. She "},{"startTime":296.08,"endTime":303.84,"body":"used herbal medicine, or herbal remedies as they  "},{"startTime":303.84,"endTime":310.88,"body":"were called back then, and was admired for her "},{"startTime":303.84,"endTime":310.88,"body":"skills compassion and bravery in her nursing work.  "},{"startTime":311.92,"endTime":318.0,"body":"It is written that her very presence as a "},{"startTime":311.92,"endTime":318.0,"body":"field hospital was immediately available  "},{"startTime":318.0,"endTime":324.64,"body":"to tend to the wounded and sick as a field "},{"startTime":318.0,"endTime":324.64,"body":"hospital. She did not have the same issue with  "},{"startTime":324.64,"endTime":331.36,"body":"infection as was seen in many of the hospital "},{"startTime":324.64,"endTime":331.36,"body":"facilities so her success rate was remarkable. "},{"startTime":332.8,"endTime":339.04,"body":"Mary's story is a familiar one even today. She "},{"startTime":332.8,"endTime":339.04,"body":"braved the wretches of war and catastrophic  "},{"startTime":339.04,"endTime":345.2,"body":"disease to be on the front lines to minister "},{"startTime":339.04,"endTime":345.2,"body":"to the sick and dying - often putting herself  "},{"startTime":345.2,"endTime":353.52,"body":"in harm's way both with war and with disease. "},{"startTime":345.2,"endTime":353.52,"body":"So too do our modern day health care teams,  "},{"startTime":353.52,"endTime":359.44,"body":"fighting to daily save the lives of those "},{"startTime":353.52,"endTime":359.44,"body":"suffering from the COVID-19 pandemic. "},{"startTime":360.72,"endTime":366.96,"body":"Mary encountered and fought through racism "},{"startTime":360.72,"endTime":366.96,"body":"most of her life - this impacted her ability  "},{"startTime":366.96,"endTime":372.72,"body":"to provide extensive care. Mary never "},{"startTime":366.96,"endTime":372.72,"body":"claimed to be a nurse, but she was  "},{"startTime":372.72,"endTime":377.36,"body":"a healer. In her autobiography, "},{"startTime":372.72,"endTime":377.36,"body":"Mary is quoted as saying:"},{"startTime":395.12,"endTime":400.72,"body":"Regardless of the racial controversies "},{"startTime":395.12,"endTime":400.72,"body":"that existed, her success and record  "},{"startTime":400.72,"endTime":407.44,"body":"of healing should not be forgotten."},{"startTime":400.72,"endTime":407.44,"body":"In a two-part news publication of Scotland's  "},{"startTime":407.44,"endTime":416.8,"body":"The National, dated April 26 and May 3, "},{"startTime":407.44,"endTime":416.8,"body":"2020, columnist Hamish MacPherson recounts  "},{"startTime":416.8,"endTime":423.12,"body":"Mary Seacole's life.
