If that "},{"startTime":58.8,"endTime":63.76,"body":"sounds good with you, because what I think is"},{"startTime":63.76,"endTime":68.56,"body":"there's times as educators, we find ourselves "},{"startTime":63.76,"endTime":68.56,"body":"in situations where the learning environment"},{"startTime":68.56,"endTime":75.84,"body":"may not be perceived as safe for risk-taking and "},{"startTime":68.56,"endTime":75.84,"body":"learning and sharing thoughts and making thinking"},{"startTime":75.84,"endTime":82.24,"body":"visible and engaging fully in active learning "},{"startTime":75.84,"endTime":82.24,"body":"because of the vulnerability. And so I suspect"},{"startTime":82.24,"endTime":87.68,"body":"there's probably signs and cues that we could "},{"startTime":82.24,"endTime":87.68,"body":"see as educators if we're astute that gives us a"},{"startTime":87.68,"endTime":92.88,"body":"little pulse check on perhaps maybe the integrity "},{"startTime":87.68,"endTime":92.88,"body":"of the safe container may be compromised or the"},{"startTime":92.88,"endTime":98.08,"body":"space in place is in jeopardy. And I'm curious "},{"startTime":92.88,"endTime":98.08,"body":"to hear your thoughts on what those signs or"},{"startTime":98.08,"endTime":104.64,"body":"cues might be that educators can pick up on and "},{"startTime":98.08,"endTime":104.64,"body":"maybe how they can address it and deal with it."},{"startTime":105.76,"endTime":110.8,"body":"Yeah, that was that's a that is a that is a "},{"startTime":105.76,"endTime":110.8,"body":"challenging question to think about is what do you"},{"startTime":110.8,"endTime":118.56,"body":"do when you realize that the environment is the "},{"startTime":110.8,"endTime":118.56,"body":"safety is being is being threatened. I think that,"},{"startTime":118.56,"endTime":123.68,"body":"you know, we talked about cues of what it does "},{"startTime":118.56,"endTime":123.68,"body":"look like when when learners are saying, you know,"},{"startTime":123.68,"endTime":128.32,"body":"I did I made a mistake or I was wrong or I, "},{"startTime":123.68,"endTime":128.32,"body":"you know, or they, you know, they raise their"},{"startTime":128.32,"endTime":133.04,"body":"hand and they're willing to ask that question. "},{"startTime":128.32,"endTime":133.04,"body":"You know, I think it takes a lot for learners"},{"startTime":133.04,"endTime":142.24,"body":"to raise their hand and say like, you know, this "},{"startTime":133.04,"endTime":142.24,"body":"might be a dumb question. I think that that is,"},{"startTime":142.24,"endTime":146.64,"body":"you know, and then we tend to say like there's no "},{"startTime":142.24,"endTime":146.64,"body":"such thing as a dumb question. That's typically"},{"startTime":146.64,"endTime":152.24,"body":"our response to that. But I think that a sign of "},{"startTime":146.64,"endTime":152.24,"body":"psychological safety. They feel very safe to share"},{"startTime":152.24,"endTime":162.48,"body":"that question. I think I think that when we see it "},{"startTime":152.24,"endTime":162.48,"body":"not happening is when you get people that and it"},{"startTime":162.48,"endTime":167.6,"body":"and by by all means I'll say this, this doesn't "},{"startTime":162.48,"endTime":167.6,"body":"happen in like your first teaching experience."},{"startTime":167.6,"endTime":172.16,"body":"Like the first time you teach in front of "},{"startTime":167.6,"endTime":172.16,"body":"a group of people and you ask a question,"},{"startTime":172.16,"endTime":176.4,"body":"you're likely going to hear silence. you're likely "},{"startTime":172.16,"endTime":176.4,"body":"going to hear, you know, like nobody's going to"},{"startTime":176.4,"endTime":184.48,"body":"want to raise their hand. I also think that when "},{"startTime":176.4,"endTime":184.48,"body":"I had when I used to have when I used to end class"},{"startTime":184.48,"endTime":190.8,"body":"and a whole bunch of learners would come up to me "},{"startTime":184.48,"endTime":190.8,"body":"and say, I had this question. I had this question."},{"startTime":190.8,"endTime":195.28,"body":"I had this question. I'm like, why why didn't this "},{"startTime":190.8,"endTime":195.28,"body":"come out in the class? Like, this would have been"},{"startTime":195.28,"endTime":200.88,"body":"a great question. I think that's a sign to me that "},{"startTime":195.28,"endTime":200.88,"body":"I've got to be more inviting of questions. I've"},{"startTime":200.88,"endTime":207.68,"body":"got to be more inviting to to share that risk, "},{"startTime":200.88,"endTime":207.68,"body":"but I also think that I also think that one of"},{"startTime":207.68,"endTime":214.24,"body":"the things that we can do is when we're in class, "},{"startTime":207.68,"endTime":214.24,"body":"it's like our time to be on, right? It's like our"},{"startTime":214.24,"endTime":221.28,"body":"time to be the best that we can be, which requires "},{"startTime":214.24,"endTime":221.28,"body":"so much preparation and things like that. But I go"},{"startTime":221.28,"endTime":227.84,"body":"back to, you know, what we would say is over time "},{"startTime":221.28,"endTime":227.84,"body":"like a really good pre-briefing is what sets the"},{"startTime":227.84,"endTime":232.16,"body":"stage for psychological safety. letting learners "},{"startTime":227.84,"endTime":232.16,"body":"know what's going to happen. Letting them know"},{"startTime":232.16,"endTime":239.12,"body":"all of the the things that are to come. And when "},{"startTime":232.16,"endTime":239.12,"body":"there's going to be a break, there's so much that"},{"startTime":239.12,"endTime":243.44,"body":"comes. Okay, well, I know that there's going "},{"startTime":239.12,"endTime":243.44,"body":"to be a break at at this time, so I'll get a"},{"startTime":243.44,"endTime":249.12,"body":"chance to check my phone or do whatever. There's "},{"startTime":243.44,"endTime":249.12,"body":"so much power in knowing that. But that also takes"},{"startTime":249.12,"endTime":253.92,"body":"quite a bit of time to develop that toolkit to "},{"startTime":249.12,"endTime":253.92,"body":"not make it sound clunky like you're reading"},{"startTime":253.92,"endTime":258.48,"body":"from a script about pre-briefing because we all I "},{"startTime":253.92,"endTime":258.48,"body":"think started with a script. I did. I started with"},{"startTime":258.48,"endTime":266.24,"body":"a scripted pre-brief and gradually that's become "},{"startTime":258.48,"endTime":266.24,"body":"more that's become more natural and it flows and"},{"startTime":266.24,"endTime":273.68,"body":"those students know that this is kind of what I "},{"startTime":266.24,"endTime":273.68,"body":"do. I think at the very beginning what I would go"},{"startTime":273.68,"endTime":279.04,"body":"back to, and I've shared this author with y'all a "},{"startTime":273.68,"endTime":279.04,"body":"couple of times, Jeffrey Duncan Andrade says that"},{"startTime":279.04,"endTime":286.24,"body":"while we're building this toolkit, while we're "},{"startTime":279.04,"endTime":286.24,"body":"building this toolkit of, of teacher practices"},{"startTime":286.24,"endTime":293.68,"body":"for when we see a a psychological safe environment "},{"startTime":286.24,"endTime":293.68,"body":"start to, you know, to to lose its hold, when we"},{"startTime":293.68,"endTime":299.04,"body":"see that , and we don't have that task right "},{"startTime":293.68,"endTime":299.04,"body":"at hand to wrap it back in. He says that the"},{"startTime":299.04,"endTime":305.12,"body":"best thing teachers can do from day one is show up "},{"startTime":299.04,"endTime":305.12,"body":"and show compassion to our students. Like that's"},{"startTime":305.12,"endTime":312.16,"body":"what we can do. And so, you know, I tend to think "},{"startTime":305.12,"endTime":312.16,"body":"when I have depending on the dialogue, you know,"},{"startTime":312.16,"endTime":319.44,"body":"when a when a when a student begins to ask when a "},{"startTime":312.16,"endTime":319.44,"body":"student asks a question that I begin to think oo"},{"startTime":319.44,"endTime":327.28,"body":"like you just introduced a risky topic. I think "},{"startTime":319.44,"endTime":327.28,"body":"one of the things I tend to do is I say, \"Thank"},{"startTime":327.28,"endTime":334.16,"body":"you for bringing forward that question. That's a "},{"startTime":327.28,"endTime":334.16,"body":"great question.\" And sometimes just a little bit"},{"startTime":334.16,"endTime":340.24,"body":"of silence helps as well. And sometimes I don't "},{"startTime":334.16,"endTime":340.24,"body":"know when I'm in those kind of conversations,"},{"startTime":340.24,"endTime":345.6,"body":"I'm like, \"Let's let that sit for just a second "},{"startTime":340.24,"endTime":345.6,"body":"because I'm not expecting, you know, someone to"},{"startTime":345.6,"endTime":353.04,"body":"have the answer to that question.\" Because that's "},{"startTime":345.6,"endTime":353.04,"body":"a difficult question. So, let's think about that"},{"startTime":353.04,"endTime":357.92,"body":"for a little bit. Let's let it percolate because I "},{"startTime":353.04,"endTime":357.92,"body":"know and I even take I need to let that percolate"},{"startTime":357.92,"endTime":362.32,"body":"too. I think that there are all kinds of "},{"startTime":357.92,"endTime":362.32,"body":"strategies that we can use and those develop"},{"startTime":362.32,"endTime":366.08,"body":"over the time but I tend to think you know the "},{"startTime":362.32,"endTime":366.08,"body":"worst thing we can do is shut down the question"},{"startTime":366.08,"endTime":371.76,"body":"unless it's getting of course hostile but I think "},{"startTime":366.08,"endTime":371.76,"body":"most times learners are genuinely curious and I"},{"startTime":371.76,"endTime":376.0,"body":"think it goes back to holding the basic assumption "},{"startTime":371.76,"endTime":376.0,"body":"which again feels very scripted the first time you"},{"startTime":376.0,"endTime":382.16,"body":"read the basic assumption work from the center for "},{"startTime":376.0,"endTime":382.16,"body":"medical simulation but if learners kind of know"},{"startTime":382.16,"endTime":388.64,"body":"that you're not going to only say that you can say "},{"startTime":382.16,"endTime":388.64,"body":"it's a safe place all that you want if you don't"},{"startTime":388.64,"endTime":395.36,"body":"work to create that, then it's just words. And "},{"startTime":388.64,"endTime":395.36,"body":"so I tend to think if they see me as an educator"},{"startTime":395.36,"endTime":400.88,"body":"working through that, like, okay, that that was "},{"startTime":395.36,"endTime":400.88,"body":"a tough question. Let's lean into that a little"},{"startTime":400.88,"endTime":406.0,"body":"bit. Then they learn to know that the next time "},{"startTime":400.88,"endTime":406.0,"body":"it's asked, that's going to be the same response"},{"startTime":406.0,"endTime":411.68,"body":"for me. that's going to be the consistency of my "},{"startTime":406.0,"endTime":411.68,"body":"practice when we have challenging questions that"},{"startTime":411.68,"endTime":418.16,"body":"are brought up about equitability in healthcare or "},{"startTime":411.68,"endTime":418.16,"body":"you know some of those dicey topics that tend to"},{"startTime":418.16,"endTime":423.52,"body":"get students really conversing with each other. "},{"startTime":418.16,"endTime":423.52,"body":"So I think I think everybody has a probably a"},{"startTime":423.52,"endTime":429.92,"body":"different toolkit. Those are kind of the ones that "},{"startTime":423.52,"endTime":429.92,"body":"I started with but I also think that it doesn't"},{"startTime":429.92,"endTime":437.28,"body":"happen on day one. It takes some time for you "},{"startTime":429.92,"endTime":437.28,"body":"as an educator to learn from your students. What"},{"startTime":437.28,"endTime":443.76,"body":"works and what doesn't work. And I think being "},{"startTime":437.28,"endTime":443.76,"body":"vulnerable and sometimes knowing that didn't land"},{"startTime":444.96,"endTime":449.2,"body":"is sometimes encouraging to share the next time. "},{"startTime":444.96,"endTime":449.2,"body":"It's sometimes encouraging to share that the next"},{"startTime":449.2,"endTime":453.28,"body":"time like you know what that that didn't go as "},{"startTime":449.2,"endTime":453.28,"body":"well as I thought it did. There's a lot of power"},{"startTime":453.28,"endTime":457.28,"body":"in us being vulnerable in front of our students. "},{"startTime":453.28,"endTime":457.28,"body":"I know a lot of people tend to also think that"},{"startTime":457.28,"endTime":464.72,"body":"that can be used against us later. But I do I do "},{"startTime":457.28,"endTime":464.72,"body":"believe that there's a lot of power in educators"},{"startTime":465.52,"endTime":469.92,"body":"showing their vulnerability when they're you "},{"startTime":465.52,"endTime":469.92,"body":"know when they're not certain of an answer,"},{"startTime":469.92,"endTime":475.04,"body":"not having the answer. I think that those go "},{"startTime":469.92,"endTime":475.04,"body":"a long way for creating psychological safety"},{"startTime":475.04,"endTime":481.36,"body":"when you feel it's beginning to to be threatened "},{"startTime":475.04,"endTime":481.36,"body":"in a classroom setting. And you know, so I just wanted to share some "},{"startTime":481.36,"endTime":486.24,"body":"of the words and themes that were resonating with"},{"startTime":486.24,"endTime":495.92,"body":"me as you were speaking, which is consistency, "},{"startTime":486.24,"endTime":495.92,"body":"compassion, authenticity, practice, experience,"},{"startTime":495.92,"endTime":501.76,"body":"right? It's going to take falling down a "},{"startTime":495.92,"endTime":501.76,"body":"few times, and getting back up there and,"},{"startTime":501.76,"endTime":506.72,"body":"uh, trying it, trying it again. I think I heard "},{"startTime":501.76,"endTime":506.72,"body":"you also say uncertainty and it's okay to share"},{"startTime":506.72,"endTime":511.6,"body":"that uncertainty. You know, I don't have the "},{"startTime":506.72,"endTime":511.6,"body":"answer. So those were some of the things that"},{"startTime":511.6,"endTime":518.08,"body":"were resonating with me. What about you, Rachel? I "},{"startTime":511.6,"endTime":518.08,"body":"totally agree and I would add to this anchoring in"},{"startTime":518.08,"endTime":521.6,"body":"what I hear as a teaching philosophy, right? So "},{"startTime":518.08,"endTime":521.6,"body":"when we talk about for those who are unfamiliar"},{"startTime":521.6,"endTime":527.52,"body":"with the basic assumption, the Harvard Center "},{"startTime":521.6,"endTime":527.52,"body":"for Medical Simulations phrasing of the basic"},{"startTime":527.52,"endTime":530.8,"body":"assumption is that we believe our learners are "},{"startTime":527.52,"endTime":530.8,"body":"intelligent, capable, wanting to do their best,"},{"startTime":530.8,"endTime":536.88,"body":"and wanting to improve. And so anchoring yourself "},{"startTime":530.8,"endTime":536.88,"body":"in that and really explaining to your learners"},{"startTime":536.88,"endTime":540.72,"body":"what that means and how does that manifest in "},{"startTime":536.88,"endTime":540.72,"body":"the learning environments you facilitate and keep"},{"startTime":540.72,"endTime":547.12,"body":"revisiting that when that integrity of the safe "},{"startTime":540.72,"endTime":547.12,"body":"container may be compromised. Acknowledging it,"},{"startTime":547.12,"endTime":552.8,"body":"addressing it and reentering and anchoring I think "},{"startTime":547.12,"endTime":552.8,"body":"are really important. I'm also a big fan of the"},{"startTime":552.8,"endTime":558.96,"body":"timeout. We need a timeout, right? Not like the "},{"startTime":552.8,"endTime":558.96,"body":"punishing time out, but just like I think Kyle,"},{"startTime":558.96,"endTime":564.32,"body":"you said it, just a pause, some silence, a "},{"startTime":558.96,"endTime":564.32,"body":"breath, and even just saying that, you know,"},{"startTime":564.32,"endTime":569.76,"body":"I'd like all of us just to take a second and kind "},{"startTime":564.32,"endTime":569.76,"body":"of reground ourselves in what we're doing and"},{"startTime":569.76,"endTime":575.6,"body":"then go into that basic assumption. However that "},{"startTime":569.76,"endTime":575.6,"body":"resonates for you in that moment, however you can"},{"startTime":575.6,"endTime":581.12,"body":"articulate that. Yeah, I think so much I think so "},{"startTime":575.6,"endTime":581.12,"body":"much lands on that basic assumption and you're and"},{"startTime":581.12,"endTime":587.44,"body":"I would agree reminding them if if those if those "},{"startTime":581.12,"endTime":587.44,"body":"top if you know if if you start to feel that the"},{"startTime":587.44,"endTime":592.48,"body":"safety is threatened reminding them this is where "},{"startTime":587.44,"endTime":592.48,"body":"we're at. We all hold learners to this. We believe"},{"startTime":592.48,"endTime":597.84,"body":"everybody we believe this about everybody and it "},{"startTime":592.48,"endTime":597.84,"body":"changes us as an educator. It really does when you"},{"startTime":597.84,"endTime":602.88,"body":"begin to truly believe that and every interaction "},{"startTime":597.84,"endTime":602.88,"body":"that you have with a student that we believe is"},{"startTime":602.88,"endTime":609.36,"body":"just a curious learner, a curious individual "},{"startTime":602.88,"endTime":609.36,"body":"or you know on their own continuum of of of"},{"startTime":609.36,"endTime":615.44,"body":"who they are. A lot of work has been discussed I "},{"startTime":609.36,"endTime":615.44,"body":"think with us about the ladder of assumptions as"},{"startTime":615.44,"endTime":620.64,"body":"well. It keeps you on that bottom ladder and "},{"startTime":615.44,"endTime":620.64,"body":"without getting too deep into it you know for"},{"startTime":620.64,"endTime":624.72,"body":"anybody listening that just go Google the ladder "},{"startTime":620.64,"endTime":624.72,"body":"of assumption or yeah the ladder of assumptions"},{"startTime":624.72,"endTime":630.08,"body":"just go Google that and it keeps you at that "},{"startTime":624.72,"endTime":630.08,"body":"ground level of I just received some data and"},{"startTime":630.08,"endTime":636.88,"body":"before I you know a learner comes up or a learner "},{"startTime":630.08,"endTime":636.88,"body":"in class says something that maybe initially like"},{"startTime":636.88,"endTime":641.52,"body":"oh wow that's making me really uncomfortable "},{"startTime":636.88,"endTime":641.52,"body":"it's you know I'm not sure how to take that"},{"startTime":641.52,"endTime":645.28,"body":"or I have a whole bunch of assumptions about "},{"startTime":641.52,"endTime":645.28,"body":"that and the latter is like okay well you just"},{"startTime":645.28,"endTime":650.64,"body":"gave a whole bunch of data and I know nothing else "},{"startTime":645.28,"endTime":650.64,"body":"about that. What I do know is the basic assumption"},{"startTime":650.64,"endTime":656.08,"body":"about you that we believe you're intelligent. We "},{"startTime":650.64,"endTime":656.08,"body":"believe, you know, and if you stay on that level,"},{"startTime":656.08,"endTime":660.16,"body":"it really changes the whole conversation that "},{"startTime":656.08,"endTime":660.16,"body":"comes after that. I think that that's what I"},{"startTime":660.16,"endTime":665.76,"body":"tend to think is it changes everything about "},{"startTime":660.16,"endTime":665.76,"body":"what the follow-up question is to that. Yeah,"},{"startTime":665.76,"endTime":671.2,"body":"I so appreciate you bringing that up, Kyle, and "},{"startTime":665.76,"endTime":671.2,"body":"you know, Chris Arduous calls it the ladder of"},{"startTime":671.2,"endTime":677.68,"body":"inference, and you're right, like we climb up "},{"startTime":671.2,"endTime":677.68,"body":"that ladder. so intuitively and subconsciously"},{"startTime":677.68,"endTime":681.52,"body":"without realizing it. So just to validate "},{"startTime":677.68,"endTime":681.52,"body":"for folks who may be listening and thinking,"},{"startTime":681.52,"endTime":685.68,"body":"\"Oh gosh, you know, this is all well and good, "},{"startTime":681.52,"endTime":685.68,"body":"but there's these moments where it's really hard"},{"startTime":685.68,"endTime":690.24,"body":"to anchor in this basic assumption.\" I think it's "},{"startTime":685.68,"endTime":690.24,"body":"important to validate that we're all wired that"},{"startTime":690.24,"endTime":694.48,"body":"way. That's normal. We all have the experiences "},{"startTime":690.24,"endTime":694.48,"body":"where like what is this student thinking? Or,"},{"startTime":694.48,"endTime":698.4,"body":"you know, I think a lot of people can resonate "},{"startTime":694.48,"endTime":698.4,"body":"with how did this student get to this point"},{"startTime":698.4,"endTime":704.48,"body":"in the program? How did they make it to this "},{"startTime":698.4,"endTime":704.48,"body":"class? Right? And it's this visceral knee-jerk"},{"startTime":704.48,"endTime":710.0,"body":"that that is climbing up that ladder. And the "},{"startTime":704.48,"endTime":710.0,"body":"basic assumption and rooting ourselves back in"},{"startTime":710.0,"endTime":713.76,"body":"our teaching philosophy and the tenants of that "},{"startTime":710.0,"endTime":713.76,"body":"and for me the basic assumption is one of those"},{"startTime":713.76,"endTime":718.24,"body":"tenants of my teaching philosophy helps me climb "},{"startTime":713.76,"endTime":718.24,"body":"down that ladder exactly like you're talking about"},{"startTime":718.24,"endTime":723.76,"body":"and come back to hang on a second. I really "},{"startTime":718.24,"endTime":723.76,"body":"do believe that my learners are intelligent,"},{"startTime":723.76,"endTime":728.96,"body":"capable, wanting to do their best, wanting to "},{"startTime":723.76,"endTime":728.96,"body":"improve and it go back to your wellness and"},{"startTime":728.96,"endTime":734.56,"body":"wonder. It allows me to to tap into that wonder, "},{"startTime":728.96,"endTime":734.56,"body":"that curiosity of, okay, so what is getting in the"},{"startTime":734.56,"endTime":740.64,"body":"way of these really well-intentioned individuals "},{"startTime":734.56,"endTime":740.64,"body":"that's leading to this point and then I can meet"},{"startTime":740.64,"endTime":745.76,"body":"them where they are, get curious, and leverage "},{"startTime":740.64,"endTime":745.76,"body":"my expertise to help move them forward. So,"},{"startTime":745.76,"endTime":749.76,"body":"I appreciate you bringing that up. Well, and I "},{"startTime":745.76,"endTime":749.76,"body":"think if we go back to things about like what"},{"startTime":749.76,"endTime":755.44,"body":"educators can do. So, here would be like one one "},{"startTime":749.76,"endTime":755.44,"body":"thought on that is that, you know, people say,"},{"startTime":755.44,"endTime":760.16,"body":"\"Well, what do I do? How do I do that?\" Like and "},{"startTime":755.44,"endTime":760.16,"body":"again that comes with time and I would tend to say"},{"startTime":760.16,"endTime":767.04,"body":"if if you as an educator find yourself doing what "},{"startTime":760.16,"endTime":767.04,"body":"you Rachel just described like oh you know your"},{"startTime":767.04,"endTime":774.64,"body":"first thought is how did they get here but then "},{"startTime":767.04,"endTime":774.64,"body":"you challenge that you're on your way to building"},{"startTime":774.64,"endTime":781.92,"body":"a place for psychological safety giving safe for "},{"startTime":774.64,"endTime":781.92,"body":"a safety and space for wellness and wonder like"},{"startTime":781.92,"endTime":787.6,"body":"you're doing it.
