When she was young she wanted to be  "},{"startTime":116.32,"endTime":123.52,"body":"a teacher but her family's financial situation "},{"startTime":116.32,"endTime":123.52,"body":"led her to choose a less costly educational path.  "},{"startTime":124.64,"endTime":130.88,"body":"After working as a nursing assistant she saw the "},{"startTime":124.64,"endTime":130.88,"body":"value of nursing and entered the nursing program  "},{"startTime":130.88,"endTime":139.04,"body":"at Middlesex General Hospital in New Jersey. Silver, a pediatrician who also  "},{"startTime":214.64,"endTime":220.96,"body":"saw a growing need for independent clinical "},{"startTime":214.64,"endTime":220.96,"body":"practitioners, Dr. Ford started the country's  "},{"startTime":220.96,"endTime":228.88,"body":"first pediatric nurse practitioner program at the "},{"startTime":220.96,"endTime":228.88,"body":"University of Colorado Medical Center. The program  "},{"startTime":228.88,"endTime":236.72,"body":"combined clinical care and research to teach "},{"startTime":228.88,"endTime":236.72,"body":"nurses how to factor in the social, psychological,  "},{"startTime":236.72,"endTime":241.92,"body":"environmental, and economic situations "},{"startTime":236.72,"endTime":241.92,"body":"of patients when developing care plans.  "},{"startTime":242.96,"endTime":249.6,"body":"In a move toward what they termed \"role "},{"startTime":242.96,"endTime":249.6,"body":"expansion,\" doctors silver and ford sought to  "},{"startTime":249.6,"endTime":256.8,"body":"increase the primary care workforce and eventually "},{"startTime":249.6,"endTime":256.8,"body":"integrate the content into nursing master's  "},{"startTime":256.8,"endTime":262.96,"body":"programs. They persisted in their goal despite "},{"startTime":256.8,"endTime":262.96,"body":"a professional landscape that was not always  "},{"startTime":262.96,"endTime":270.32,"body":"welcoming to the advanced expertise of nurses and "},{"startTime":262.96,"endTime":270.32,"body":"when some members of the nursing profession balked  "},{"startTime":270.32,"endTime":278.0,"body":"at a practice too aligned with medicine. Lienhard Award from the Institute  "},{"startTime":348.72,"endTime":355.84,"body":"of Medicine of the National Academies and the "},{"startTime":348.72,"endTime":355.84,"body":"Living Legend Award from the American Academy of  "},{"startTime":355.84,"endTime":363.68,"body":"Nursing in 1999 and the U.S Surgeon General's "},{"startTime":355.84,"endTime":363.68,"body":"Medallion for Contributions to the Nation's  "},{"startTime":363.68,"endTime":371.52,"body":"Health in 2020, the highest honor granted to a "},{"startTime":363.68,"endTime":371.52,"body":"civilian by the public health service and the  "},{"startTime":371.52,"endTime":379.84,"body":"U.S. Public Health Service Commissioned Corps. "},{"startTime":371.52,"endTime":379.84,"body":"That same year she celebrated her 100th birthday. "},{"startTime":380.56,"endTime":384.64,"body":"Dr. Loretta Ford transformed "},{"startTime":380.56,"endTime":384.64,"body":"the profession of nursing  "},{"startTime":384.64,"endTime":391.6,"body":"and made primary health care more accessible "},{"startTime":384.64,"endTime":391.6,"body":"to millions of individuals across the U.S.  "},{"startTime":392.32,"endTime":399.52,"body":"Today, there are more than 325,000 "},{"startTime":392.32,"endTime":399.52,"body":"nurse practitioners licensed across  "},{"startTime":399.52,"endTime":409.2,"body":"the country graduating from over 400 academic "},{"startTime":399.52,"endTime":409.2,"body":"institutions.
