I do some work in"},{"startTime":104.8,"endTime":109.28,"body":"this area, not so much the mentoring but with men "},{"startTime":104.8,"endTime":109.28,"body":"in nursing and creating a pipeline or pathway for"},{"startTime":109.84,"endTime":115.36,"body":"young adults in high school to get into the "},{"startTime":109.84,"endTime":115.36,"body":"profession. So we're going to start...thank you."},{"startTime":115.36,"endTime":119.28,"body":"We're going to start right into our questions. And "},{"startTime":115.36,"endTime":119.28,"body":"the first question I want to ask you is can you"},{"startTime":119.28,"endTime":123.92,"body":"talk about how you developed your interest in the "},{"startTime":119.28,"endTime":123.92,"body":"mentoring experience of men and nursing academia?"},{"startTime":124.72,"endTime":128.96,"body":"Absolutely. Well first of all, I really "},{"startTime":124.72,"endTime":128.96,"body":"would like to thank you for giving me the"},{"startTime":128.96,"endTime":136.64,"body":"opportunity to share my research related to the "},{"startTime":128.96,"endTime":136.64,"body":"mentoring experiences of male faculty in nursing"},{"startTime":136.64,"endTime":143.92,"body":"programs. I would say that my interest related "},{"startTime":136.64,"endTime":143.92,"body":"to the male faculty experiences specifically"},{"startTime":143.92,"endTime":151.68,"body":"really developed as part of my dissertation. I "},{"startTime":143.92,"endTime":151.68,"body":"really think that like many people either you have"},{"startTime":151.68,"endTime":158.0,"body":"a very positive or a kind of a negative experience "},{"startTime":151.68,"endTime":158.0,"body":"right and that's related to the mentoring aspect."},{"startTime":158.0,"endTime":166.8,"body":"And I wanted to know what others went through. "},{"startTime":158.0,"endTime":166.8,"body":"As a novice faculty, I was assigned a mentor. I"},{"startTime":166.8,"endTime":173.52,"body":"would say really strongly it was my mentor who "},{"startTime":166.8,"endTime":173.52,"body":"provided me an incredible amount of support,"},{"startTime":173.52,"endTime":180.08,"body":"especially in my first year in that new faculty "},{"startTime":173.52,"endTime":180.08,"body":"role, that novice position. It was just...I"},{"startTime":180.08,"endTime":187.12,"body":"encountered a variety of issues and she "},{"startTime":180.08,"endTime":187.12,"body":"was there for me not to tell me what to do,"},{"startTime":187.12,"endTime":190.96,"body":"but to challenge me really, to challenge "},{"startTime":187.12,"endTime":190.96,"body":"me to think about what was happening,"},{"startTime":191.68,"endTime":199.04,"body":"how it was related to my personal philosophy "},{"startTime":191.68,"endTime":199.04,"body":"of nursing and academia, and what I was doing."},{"startTime":199.6,"endTime":206.48,"body":"And so I had a great positive experience but "},{"startTime":199.6,"endTime":206.48,"body":"I know that not everyone even individuals"},{"startTime":206.48,"endTime":213.04,"body":"at that same time did or do for that matter. So "},{"startTime":206.48,"endTime":213.04,"body":"then I kind of you know jump ahead a couple years."},{"startTime":213.04,"endTime":218.56,"body":"I started my doctoral studies and I remember "},{"startTime":213.04,"endTime":218.56,"body":"meeting with a colleague who said to me that as I"},{"startTime":218.56,"endTime":224.16,"body":"was looking at dissertation topics, really choose "},{"startTime":218.56,"endTime":224.16,"body":"one that I felt strongly about, something that I"},{"startTime":225.36,"endTime":230.24,"body":"could live with, right, because it was going "},{"startTime":225.36,"endTime":230.24,"body":"to take a little bit of time and effort. I then"},{"startTime":230.24,"endTime":237.12,"body":"remember we had a seminar course as part of my "},{"startTime":230.24,"endTime":237.12,"body":"doctoral studies and we had to discuss potential"},{"startTime":237.12,"endTime":245.44,"body":"topics and how, where, what direction we saw "},{"startTime":237.12,"endTime":245.44,"body":"those topics going. And we were questioned heavily"},{"startTime":245.44,"endTime":251.6,"body":"about the nature of the topics and we would spend "},{"startTime":245.44,"endTime":251.6,"body":"about 10 to 15 minutes. We kind of did a like a"},{"startTime":252.48,"endTime":257.12,"body":"speed interview type thing with other "},{"startTime":252.48,"endTime":257.12,"body":"faculty members in the doctoral program"},{"startTime":257.12,"endTime":263.44,"body":"where they would question our topics and I was "},{"startTime":257.12,"endTime":263.44,"body":"questioned so much that first day I felt almost"},{"startTime":263.44,"endTime":268.32,"body":"defeated honestly, I mean, but it was good. "},{"startTime":263.44,"endTime":268.32,"body":"It was not defeated. I just felt challenged."},{"startTime":268.32,"endTime":273.28,"body":"And so I went home that night and I thought "},{"startTime":268.32,"endTime":273.28,"body":"oh my gosh, I'm gonna have to scrap this"},{"startTime":273.28,"endTime":276.8,"body":"and find something completely new "},{"startTime":273.28,"endTime":276.8,"body":"and different to start working on."},{"startTime":276.8,"endTime":282.32,"body":"What am I gonna do? And then the next day we had "},{"startTime":276.8,"endTime":282.32,"body":"another round of these discussion mini meetings"},{"startTime":282.32,"endTime":289.92,"body":"if you will, and I had a male faculty member who "},{"startTime":282.32,"endTime":289.92,"body":"I was, you know, putting my idea out there to and"},{"startTime":289.92,"endTime":295.28,"body":"I made the comment how after the day before I "},{"startTime":289.92,"endTime":295.28,"body":"felt like oh I need to come up with something new."},{"startTime":295.28,"endTime":300.64,"body":"And that male faculty member said, don't give up. "},{"startTime":295.28,"endTime":300.64,"body":"Consider where that gap is. Really look for it"},{"startTime":300.64,"endTime":306.56,"body":"and I mean something that we've heard of tons of "},{"startTime":300.64,"endTime":306.56,"body":"times, but that faculty member said that to me and"},{"startTime":306.56,"endTime":312.72,"body":"I thought oh my goodness this is it. It was like "},{"startTime":306.56,"endTime":312.72,"body":"I knew at that point. It hit me. I knew what my"},{"startTime":312.72,"endTime":319.76,"body":"experiences were. I knew what my experiences were "},{"startTime":312.72,"endTime":319.76,"body":"as a female, but what about the male perspective"},{"startTime":319.76,"endTime":326.88,"body":"of that? How were those different if they were "},{"startTime":319.76,"endTime":326.88,"body":"different at all? And so that really kind of"},{"startTime":327.6,"endTime":334.32,"body":"shows my path, my development into how I got "},{"startTime":327.6,"endTime":334.32,"body":"to be interested first of all in mentoring"},{"startTime":334.96,"endTime":339.68,"body":"and then obviously in the mentoring experiences "},{"startTime":334.96,"endTime":339.68,"body":"of male faculty, kind of having someone say"},{"startTime":340.56,"endTime":344.0,"body":"what, what's missing? Like as is to "},{"startTime":340.56,"endTime":344.0,"body":"say, you need to probe that a little"},{"startTime":344.0,"endTime":348.08,"body":"bit further with that aspect. So that's how "},{"startTime":344.0,"endTime":348.08,"body":"I got my interest in that topic in general."},{"startTime":349.12,"endTime":353.04,"body":"Wonderful. well my next question kind of builds "},{"startTime":349.12,"endTime":353.04,"body":"on this what are your thoughts on the lack of"},{"startTime":353.04,"endTime":357.68,"body":"male role models and how that may impact the "},{"startTime":353.04,"endTime":357.68,"body":"pathways for recruiting men into the profession"},{"startTime":358.56,"endTime":365.28,"body":"that's a great question I think this is perhaps "},{"startTime":358.56,"endTime":365.28,"body":"the most difficult aspect to overcome in general"},{"startTime":365.28,"endTime":369.92,"body":"right you've had some work in that area "},{"startTime":365.28,"endTime":369.92,"body":"you said and so I think it goes back to"},{"startTime":369.92,"endTime":375.6,"body":"history that has been portrayed I'm not saying "},{"startTime":369.92,"endTime":375.6,"body":"that this is the correct history because"},{"startTime":375.6,"endTime":380.8,"body":"there's history even further back that's a "},{"startTime":375.6,"endTime":380.8,"body":"little different but when we look at it women"},{"startTime":380.8,"endTime":385.76,"body":"traditionally were seen as the caretakers right "},{"startTime":380.8,"endTime":385.76,"body":"the nurturers and their families and in their"},{"startTime":385.76,"endTime":392.64,"body":"careers or the careers that they identified with "},{"startTime":385.76,"endTime":392.64,"body":"were were those caretaker and nurturer careers"},{"startTime":394.0,"endTime":399.52,"body":"but what I think is throughout my "},{"startTime":394.0,"endTime":399.52,"body":"conversation with these participants"},{"startTime":400.32,"endTime":406.72,"body":"regardless of age and regardless of their role "},{"startTime":400.32,"endTime":406.72,"body":"in academia it was evident that the lack of role"},{"startTime":406.72,"endTime":414.24,"body":"model male role models was an issue is potentially "},{"startTime":406.72,"endTime":414.24,"body":"still an issue it was really interesting to note"},{"startTime":415.12,"endTime":423.2,"body":"that because of this lack of male role models "},{"startTime":415.12,"endTime":423.2,"body":"some of the participants felt that other males"},{"startTime":423.2,"endTime":430.0,"body":"would purposefully search them out whether it was "},{"startTime":423.2,"endTime":430.0,"body":"through social media whether it was at conferences"},{"startTime":430.0,"endTime":438.16,"body":"regardless of what it was or even in a classroom "},{"startTime":430.0,"endTime":438.16,"body":"setting having being a male faculty and having"},{"startTime":438.16,"endTime":443.68,"body":"those students who would reach out to you looking "},{"startTime":438.16,"endTime":443.68,"body":"for that so they would be searched out for"},{"startTime":444.24,"endTime":451.44,"body":"with that being said I think that one way to "},{"startTime":444.24,"endTime":451.44,"body":"help with this is really to develop programs for"},{"startTime":452.16,"endTime":456.32,"body":"males in middle and high school and I think middle "},{"startTime":452.16,"endTime":456.32,"body":"school they don't know what they want to do yet"},{"startTime":456.32,"endTime":462.48,"body":"but we have to start early they need to learn "},{"startTime":456.32,"endTime":462.48,"body":"about the opportunities within the profession"},{"startTime":463.04,"endTime":468.72,"body":"and what a wonderful profession there it is "},{"startTime":463.04,"endTime":468.72,"body":"and how they can really be involved in this"},{"startTime":468.72,"endTime":476.56,"body":"so i think that if you read through some of the "},{"startTime":468.72,"endTime":476.56,"body":"aspects of the of the article the role of early"},{"startTime":477.12,"endTime":483.68,"body":"supporters was something that was surprising to me "},{"startTime":477.12,"endTime":483.68,"body":"and identified by the participants so again this"},{"startTime":483.68,"endTime":490.64,"body":"and the early supporters may have been males may "},{"startTime":483.68,"endTime":490.64,"body":"have been females but someone who said to them you"},{"startTime":490.64,"endTime":495.12,"body":"should think about nursing you would be great in "},{"startTime":490.64,"endTime":495.12,"body":"this profession look at that career look at what"},{"startTime":495.12,"endTime":503.84,"body":"you could do so I think that really hits home the "},{"startTime":495.12,"endTime":503.84,"body":"importance of connecting males early on with other"},{"startTime":503.84,"endTime":511.12,"body":"male role models and you might even consider it "},{"startTime":503.84,"endTime":511.12,"body":"a mentoring program if you will for these young"},{"startTime":512.24,"endTime":518.4,"body":"middle and high school age young men who are who "},{"startTime":512.24,"endTime":518.4,"body":"are looking at where their future could take them"},{"startTime":518.96,"endTime":525.2,"body":"and really showing them that that this is a "},{"startTime":518.96,"endTime":525.2,"body":"valuable and important career for them to consider"},{"startTime":525.84,"endTime":531.52,"body":"well we know the impact that family members who "},{"startTime":525.84,"endTime":531.52,"body":"are nurses have on especially males decisions"},{"startTime":531.52,"endTime":537.52,"body":"to choose nurturing as a career most likely "},{"startTime":531.52,"endTime":537.52,"body":"because they have insight into exactly what"},{"startTime":537.52,"endTime":543.04,"body":"a nurse does where many high school students I "},{"startTime":537.52,"endTime":543.04,"body":"find in young adults you're talking about really"},{"startTime":543.04,"endTime":550.32,"body":"don't have an understanding of the nurses role "},{"startTime":543.04,"endTime":550.32,"body":"in healthcare system from and also much of the"},{"startTime":550.32,"endTime":555.44,"body":"media doesn't betray it in such a way that it's "},{"startTime":550.32,"endTime":555.44,"body":"very accurate I think the pandemic has brought"},{"startTime":555.44,"endTime":561.84,"body":"out a lot of aspects of the profession that were "},{"startTime":555.44,"endTime":561.84,"body":"hidden from the public and so that has been good"},{"startTime":563.84,"endTime":566.72,"body":"but i still think we have a tendency "},{"startTime":563.84,"endTime":566.72,"body":"i don't know if you agree or not"},{"startTime":566.72,"endTime":570.4,"body":"you know caring is a very important aspect "},{"startTime":566.72,"endTime":570.4,"body":"of the profession and we certainly do a very"},{"startTime":570.4,"endTime":576.32,"body":"good job at emphasizing the caring aspect "},{"startTime":570.4,"endTime":576.32,"body":"I've always positioned my thoughts that"},{"startTime":576.32,"endTime":582.32,"body":"caring is not unique to nursing i would argue many "},{"startTime":576.32,"endTime":582.32,"body":"people in professions that are related to nursing"},{"startTime":582.32,"endTime":587.44,"body":"care about what they're doing in their clients "},{"startTime":582.32,"endTime":587.44,"body":"and patients because we heavily emphasize that"},{"startTime":588.32,"endTime":594.88,"body":"but we don't emphasize the science of nursing "},{"startTime":588.32,"endTime":594.88,"body":"and what we do and what we have to know as"},{"startTime":594.88,"endTime":599.52,"body":"science is right do the things that we do at "},{"startTime":594.88,"endTime":599.52,"body":"the bedside and I want to hear a little bit"},{"startTime":599.52,"endTime":604.48,"body":"about your thoughts on that and how that may or "},{"startTime":599.52,"endTime":604.48,"body":"may not not just display men from coming into"},{"startTime":604.48,"endTime":611.68,"body":"the profession but for everyone right so I think "},{"startTime":604.48,"endTime":611.68,"body":"that really resonates you're right we have to look"},{"startTime":611.68,"endTime":616.72,"body":"at these science the stem fields right this is "},{"startTime":611.68,"endTime":616.72,"body":"one of those stem fields really you look at that"},{"startTime":618.08,"endTime":624.24,"body":"we the things we do in nursing come because of the "},{"startTime":618.08,"endTime":624.24,"body":"science that's been developed behind all of that"},{"startTime":624.24,"endTime":630.24,"body":"right we've really seen that especially coming "},{"startTime":624.24,"endTime":630.24,"body":"forward here recently but I think it's important"},{"startTime":630.24,"endTime":639.28,"body":"and I think it's important for not just males all "},{"startTime":630.24,"endTime":639.28,"body":"young adults to see the value of whatever career"},{"startTime":639.28,"endTime":646.24,"body":"choice they take and the importance of the science "},{"startTime":639.28,"endTime":646.24,"body":"behind any field right because they all have some"},{"startTime":646.24,"endTime":654.72,"body":"form of science within them and so those STEM "},{"startTime":646.24,"endTime":654.72,"body":"fields are important in our society and to help"},{"startTime":654.72,"endTime":660.4,"body":"the professions really progress forward so "},{"startTime":654.72,"endTime":660.4,"body":"absolutely I would agree i think we need to"},{"startTime":661.84,"endTime":667.44,"body":"hit home the fact of the importance of science in "},{"startTime":661.84,"endTime":667.44,"body":"those high school classes in those middle school"},{"startTime":667.44,"endTime":671.92,"body":"you think oh it's just high school biology or "},{"startTime":667.44,"endTime":671.92,"body":"it's just high school anatomy but no that can"},{"startTime":671.92,"endTime":677.68,"body":"help set a foundation that can help trigger "},{"startTime":671.92,"endTime":677.68,"body":"someone to really consider oh all the things"},{"startTime":677.68,"endTime":684.48,"body":"I could do with a science background so "},{"startTime":677.68,"endTime":684.48,"body":"absolutely or math background right any of them"},{"startTime":685.52,"endTime":691.52,"body":"very valuable i would agree that's a great point "},{"startTime":685.52,"endTime":691.52,"body":"and you're right individuals care I think that"},{"startTime":691.52,"endTime":696.24,"body":"maybe is part of something that goes wrong you "},{"startTime":691.52,"endTime":696.24,"body":"could tie that into the mentoring piece as well"},{"startTime":696.24,"endTime":702.16,"body":"individuals care so based upon their experiences "},{"startTime":696.24,"endTime":702.16,"body":"and one of the things I talked about was paying"},{"startTime":702.16,"endTime":710.88,"body":"it forward so whether the mentee the protege had a "},{"startTime":702.16,"endTime":710.88,"body":"positive experience or maybe a negative experience"},{"startTime":710.88,"endTime":716.0,"body":"they he felt propelled the participants "},{"startTime":710.88,"endTime":716.0,"body":"felt propelled to do something about it"},{"startTime":716.0,"endTime":720.4,"body":"so I want to give back somebody the same "},{"startTime":716.0,"endTime":720.4,"body":"experience i had because it was wonderful"},{"startTime":720.4,"endTime":725.84,"body":"or I want to create an even better experience "},{"startTime":720.4,"endTime":725.84,"body":"for the next group of people that come through"},{"startTime":725.84,"endTime":733.04,"body":"in nursing in academia et cetera so I think that "},{"startTime":725.84,"endTime":733.04,"body":"kind of ties in you're right they do care about"},{"startTime":733.6,"endTime":738.4,"body":"their experiences and what they went through "},{"startTime":733.6,"endTime":738.4,"body":"and how they can make it better for the next"},{"startTime":738.4,"endTime":745.36,"body":"group many of the mentoring theories described in "},{"startTime":738.4,"endTime":745.36,"body":"your article are not unique to men and perfection"},{"startTime":745.36,"endTime":750.16,"body":"please elaborate on the specific insights on the "},{"startTime":745.36,"endTime":750.16,"body":"need for understanding that you mentioned in the"},{"startTime":750.16,"endTime":756.64,"body":"article yeah that's great you are correct the "},{"startTime":750.16,"endTime":756.64,"body":"barriers that I identified or the participants"},{"startTime":756.64,"endTime":763.28,"body":"identified really were related to time which time "},{"startTime":756.64,"endTime":763.28,"body":"is everything right in our world and the lack"},{"startTime":763.28,"endTime":770.0,"body":"of support lack of support from mentors protege "},{"startTime":763.28,"endTime":770.0,"body":"and or the institution that you're right is not"},{"startTime":770.0,"endTime":776.72,"body":"new to the body of literature that was out there "},{"startTime":770.0,"endTime":776.72,"body":"necessarily but the need for understanding wasn't"},{"startTime":776.72,"endTime":783.2,"body":"as seen necessarily as a barrier but more of an "},{"startTime":776.72,"endTime":783.2,"body":"identified theme related to the role of gender"},{"startTime":783.2,"endTime":789.2,"body":"really came up in the role of gender peace "},{"startTime":783.2,"endTime":789.2,"body":"excuse me half of the participants described"},{"startTime":790.24,"endTime":797.12,"body":"in their own way this need for understanding two "},{"startTime":790.24,"endTime":797.12,"body":"of them specifically commented on the importance"},{"startTime":797.12,"endTime":804.56,"body":"of needing a mentor regardless of gender they said "},{"startTime":797.12,"endTime":804.56,"body":"taking the gender piece out of it everyone needs"},{"startTime":804.56,"endTime":811.68,"body":"a mentor it wasn't about for them it wasn't "},{"startTime":804.56,"endTime":811.68,"body":"about male or female it was about individuals"},{"startTime":812.32,"endTime":819.92,"body":"and their need for support and encouragement in "},{"startTime":812.32,"endTime":819.92,"body":"taking on this new role new role of faculty member"},{"startTime":820.96,"endTime":826.48,"body":"three of the other individuals then described the "},{"startTime":820.96,"endTime":826.48,"body":"need for understanding beyond the gender aspect"},{"startTime":827.2,"endTime":833.2,"body":"for them it was important to acknowledge that "},{"startTime":827.2,"endTime":833.2,"body":"gender differences were there right it's a part"},{"startTime":834.0,"endTime":841.44,"body":"but but it was more about finding a person or even "},{"startTime":834.0,"endTime":841.44,"body":"people that they could connect with on a personal"},{"startTime":841.44,"endTime":848.56,"body":"and professional level and really be available "},{"startTime":841.44,"endTime":848.56,"body":"these people be available to them as mentors"},{"startTime":848.56,"endTime":855.68,"body":"to help them work through these roles in academia "},{"startTime":848.56,"endTime":855.68,"body":"and what they were going through so overall while"},{"startTime":855.68,"endTime":861.92,"body":"that need for understanding was described by "},{"startTime":855.68,"endTime":861.92,"body":"the participants I think this might be you"},{"startTime":861.92,"endTime":867.52,"body":"know male participants this might be applicable to "},{"startTime":861.92,"endTime":867.52,"body":"applicable to a variety of underrepresented groups"},{"startTime":867.52,"endTime":872.8,"body":"like i think this transcends the mail piece and I "},{"startTime":867.52,"endTime":872.8,"body":"know it's big you can't generalize you know with"},{"startTime":872.8,"endTime":879.76,"body":"these these small number of participants but boy "},{"startTime":872.8,"endTime":879.76,"body":"I think it speaks to the fact of they hit home on"},{"startTime":879.76,"endTime":886.32,"body":"the fact that these their individuals need that "},{"startTime":879.76,"endTime":886.32,"body":"support regardless again what career choice you"},{"startTime":886.32,"endTime":893.2,"body":"make but taking it and being an individual just "},{"startTime":989.44,"endTime":996.8,"body":"considering the sheer numbers attracting more men"},{"startTime":996.8,"endTime":1005.12,"body":"and underrepresented groups is key it's key
