Permission to Pause with Pat Layton
Episode 78: Pause and Take Those Wild Toughts Captive
I recently heard one of my favorite author/speakers use a phrase in random conversation that I could not get off my mind. I was listening to HIS podcast and scribbled a note while driving so would not forget.
The phrase he used was “NET THAT butterfly” in reference to not allowing our thoughts to run away with us. That visual image has stuck in my head now for weeks.
Stinking thinking tends to be a dangerous downfall of mine if I am not very careful and intentional about NOT allowing that to happen.
In the fast-paced world we live in, our minds are often buzzing with a flurry of thoughts, opinions, and arguments. It's as if our brains are a never-ending butterfly garden, with thoughts fluttering about like delicate butterflies, each one vying for our attention.
2 Corinthians 10:5 ESV, that invites us to bring order to that fluttering chaos:
"We destroy arguments and every lofty opinion raised against the knowledge of God, and take every thought captive to obey Christ."
This verse presents a powerful imagery of netting butterflies – capturing and subduing our thoughts for the purpose of aligning them with Christ's will.
Let's pause today to consider what it means to "net the butterfly" in the context of our everyday lives.
