Puberty, relationships, and sexuality are natural parts of development, yet they are often overlooked in ABA programming. In this conversation, we explore why these topics should be introduced early, rather than waiting until challenges arise, and how proactive teaching can promote safety, dignity, and independence.

We discuss practical ways to teach body changes, hygiene, privacy, consent, boundaries, friendships, and healthy relationships using developmentally appropriate strategies. We also highlight the importance of practicing skills in real-life settings, helping learners generalize what they have learned beyond structured teaching sessions. Throughout the conversation, we emphasize balancing safety with autonomy while respecting each learner's individual needs, family values, and personal goals.

Supporting learners through puberty is about much more than preventing risk. It is about building self-advocacy, informed decision making, and meaningful opportunities for independence. By approaching these conversations with respect, collaboration, and compassion, we can help autistic teens and young adults navigate an important stage of life with greater confidence and understanding.

What’s Inside:

  • Why puberty, consent, and relationships should be taught early
  • Practical strategies for teaching privacy, boundaries, and self-advocacy
  • Balancing safety, autonomy, and family values in ABA programming
