Welcome back to another episode of tech brewed. I'm Greg Doig your host and it's Saturday, April 2nd, 2022.
We're going to cover just a single topic today and that's backup on Thursday, March 31st. It was the official world backup. They have their own website. The people that promote that@worldbackup.com, take a visit, take a look at their information. I went to the website and I'm going to give you the details.
Here in this episode. So they ask what is a backup? Well, they say a backup is a copy of all your important files. For example, your family, photos, home videos, documents, and emails, instead of storing it all in one place like your computer or smartphone, you need to keep a copy of everything somewhere. You ready to go here.
It is why you should back up losing your files is way more common than you'd think one small accident or a failure could destroy all the important stuff you care about. Here's some facts, 21% of people have never made a backup. 113 phones are lost or stolen. Every minute. 29% of data loss cases are caused by accidents.
In 30% of all, computers are already infected with some sort of. So, how do you protect your data? Well, we're getting ready to talk about that. Now, once you get done listening to this episode, take action. So create at least one backup, go through the steps that we're going to cover and secure your files via backups and improve your security on all of your devices.
First up, we'll talk about online backup servers. Keeping your backup in the cloud is a good and future proof alternative to physical data storage instead of external hard drives or USB sticks, but they're still necessary. An external hard driver USB stick can be lost or damaged. The biggest advantage of storing files in the cloud is that they are available anytime.
Anywhere in terms of security, you should also pay close attention to access and security with your cloud backups. Primarily use services that have at least two factor authentication. And use a secure password. So here are some cloud backup services and software programs. First up is Backblaze next. I drive a Chronos in life drive or some popular services for cloud backup.
There's also other services. One called mega gives you 20 gigabytes free peak cloud, which offers five gigabytes for free. If you're on an apple device, iCloud gives you five gigabytes free from Microsoft users. One drive gives you five gigabytes for free and Google cloud provides 15 gigabytes free, but there are paid services through most of those companies like apple, Microsoft, and Google that will allow you to buy more storage if you would like.
And again, important role is. Got a backup somewhere external hard drive backups are still quite popular. Please note that you do not use a good backup method. If you then keep the physical backup at home around the same PC safe storage of an external hard drive is important. You might want to keep it at a family member or friend's home or a safe deposit box.
External hard drives are mainly used for data storage and PC backups. The biggest disadvantage of an external hard drive is that the hard drive can break down or get lost. Physical external hard drives are often not handled with care and they collect dust. The biggest advantage is that the story space only needs to be purchased once with an external.
And it's also nice to have a cloud or online backup in addition to that, but don't forget to update your physical hard drive every year. Take a check and run a dis check on it. An external hard drive is usually available at web shops that sell other electrical hardware. And of course at the popular electronic stores, like best buy.
And if you have a micro center nearby, or of course you can use the different online platforms like Amazon or Walmart target, et cetera, to buy these devices. Were you previously had a freedom of choice in regards to where you make your back up and you could easily make multiple choices from within your operating system.
Now, most PC operating systems are promoting and integrating their own cloud services like one drive on Microsoft products. However, you still have options for making other backups. Before you go into business with a storage or backup server. Like a Chronos or Backblaze et cetera, you should familiarize yourself with the backup providers and the services they provide and what guarantees they have.
This is partly due to the fact that you can no longer properly select these options from, for example, within windows itself, are they external ones or here are some steps for creating a computer or PC backup with windows operating systems. We want to grip a pen, pencil crane. You can write this down or you can just read.
Make a backup of your PC on an external and connected hard drive via backup settings in your windows. Computer. Make a backup of your PC on one drive. If you were on a windows, PC via settings for backups, and you can select the party specialized in backups and have your PC make a backup via the. Or application of that service, common ones, again are Backblaze.
I drive a Chronos in live drive and a lot of people have smartphones these days. So you want to know how to back up your smartphone. Things often can go wrong with your smartphone. If your ad cloud account is stolen or hacked, you can still lose. In addition, these backups pushed from operating systems are often stored in the cloud storage of expensive services, and there are more affordable alternatives.
So how do you solve this? Well, use another cloud storage or backup party for backups of your crucial files. Various backup services provide additional secure. And safe distance from the original files. If you want to use additional backup services for smartphones again, mega service offers 20 gigs free.
Again, peak cloud five gigs app ly cloud five gigs of free storage, one dry five gigs of free storage and Google cloud. 15 gigs of free storage, as we mentioned before. And there are more though, where if you do a search with the terms best smartphone backup, you'll see many lists of different blogs. The next.
It talk about the various external services you might want to buy. And if you're with apple and you want to know what does I cloud backup? Well, if you use iCloud backup, so you have a copy of the information on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. If you have one, here's what it includes your app data.
AppleWatch backup. Device settings, home screen and app organization. I message. Text SMS and MMS messages, photos, and videos on your iPhone. I pad an iPod touch purchase history from apple services, like your music, movies, TV shows, apps and books bring tones and visual voicemail password, which requires the SIM card that was used in during the backup, your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch back.
Only include information and settings stored on your device. They do not include information. I already started an iCloud, such as context calendars. Notes reminders, voice memos messages in iCloud, iCloud photos and shared photos. Some information is not included in an iCloud backup, but can be added to iCloud and shared across multiple devices like male health data, call history and files you store in iCloud.
Drive near some important. If you use an apple watch, would family set up your apple watch? Isn't included in the backup of an iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. When you use messages and iCloud or turn on iCloud photos, your content is automatically stored in iCloud. That means they're not included in your iCloud back up your iCloud backup includes information about the content mean.
But not the content itself. When you restore from an iCloud backup, your purchase content is automatically read downloaded from the iTunes store app store or bookstore, some types of content aren't downloaded automatically, and all countries are reading. Previous purchases might be unavailable if they've been refunded or aren't available in the store, find out what you can read, download, and buy in your country or region.
If you use iOS 11 or earlier, voice memos are included in iCloud backup. So here's how it works. iCloud backup makes a copy of the information on your iPhone. I pad an iPad touch when your device is backed up in iCloud, you can easily set up a new device or restore information. I'm one year already. So let iCloud automatically back up your device.
Here's what you need to do. Or if you disabled or stop using iCloud backup, your last backup is stored for 180 dates. So here again, how do you use iCloud backup number one, make sure that I cloud backup is turned on in the settings. I then go to iCloud, iCloud backup. If you use an iOS 10.2 or earlier, go to settings, iCloud and.
Number two, connect your device to a power source. Number three, connect your device to a wifi network. Number four, make sure that your devices screen is lacked. Number five, check that you have enough available space in iCloud for the backup. When you set up iCloud, you automatically get five gigs of storage and a Hazara.
If you have a lot of photos and videos, you're going to need more. You can use that storage space for your iCloud backups to keep your photos and videos stored in nightclubs. And your documents up to date and iCloud drive, depending on the size of your backup and amount of content, you keep an iCloud.
You might run out of space, as I previously mentioned, so you need to buy more. So here's another good option. If you were working from home or if you're a photographer, creating a lots of videos, you're going to need lots of storage. She might want to get a Nass backup that's NAS network attached storage back in up to a Nass is a good, safe way to back up mainly for small businesses.
Tech savvy PC users and smart homes. Again, this is the abbreviation for network attached storage. And then this server is a kind of computer cabinet that can convert one or more hard drives into one wireless network storage via a wireless connection, or it can be wired also. And this is usually available at different shops that sell electronic devices.
Again, as we mentioned, best buy Amazon out of photo retailers, like BNH photo, et cetera. So take a look to shop around, do a Google search, find out recommendations for great. So here's some other backup methods and there are many more that we may not mention, but they're available for both online and offline.
And again, it's a wide topic and we're just covering the main ones that people use. Here's one which is backup via USB stick. One of the old instill effective methods is to use a USB stick and it's fairly easy. You just put the USB stick into your computer or laptop drag the files you want into the stick.
We're in two different folders on the USB stick that you create. If you're backing up from a back, here's what you do. Go to system preferences and then time machine and follow the instructions within the time machine application to back up your Mac, back up your website. If you have one, if you want to make a backup of your website, open the file manager via the web hosting company.
Or via an FTP server or C panel copy all the folders from the website to a folder on the hard disk or to a cloud storage provider. If you're a WordPress user, there's many backup plugins available. And if you use a managed hosting, they'll do it for you. And a lot of people use WhatsApp. So how do you back that up?
Well, it can be backed up via the export functionality or via the backup function. These backups outside the. Can only be saved with the operating system. So I cloud with iPhones and with Android to the Google drive, if using the WhatsApp on either of those two type devices and that's pretty much it for what was covered in world backup day in 2022 in the best time to start doing your backups well that's today.
You just have the same rule for backups as they sort of do it real estate, and there's three of them and it's backup, backup and backup. And I hope you learned something today. If you haven't already backed up your system, get busy, start backing up and be safe. Well, this ends this week show, but yes, we will work to bring you more and hope you enjoyed another episode of tech brewed, or we talk about getting your tech road just the way you like I'm Greg
And thanks for listening.
