Christian Straight Talk – Faith, Brotherhood, and Real Conversations
Heart Before House: The Eighth Commandment and the Theft We Ignore ( Part 1 )
Use Left/Right to seek, Home/End to jump to start or end. Hold shift to jump forward or backward.
In this episode of Christian Straight Talk, we explore the Eighth Commandment — “You shall not steal” — and what the Ten Commandments reveal about honesty, generosity, and faithfulness to God today.
Most people think stealing only means taking something from a shop or another person. But Scripture goes deeper. We can steal through dishonesty, wasted time, damaged reputations, withholding generosity, or even by holding back the gifts and calling God has placed in our lives.
This conversation asks a difficult but important question: are we truly following Jesus, or are we simply following church culture?
When buildings, traditions, and performances take centre stage, the cross can quietly fade into the background. Yet the commandments point us back to something far deeper than religion — a life of integrity, courage, and obedience shaped by the heart.
Through Scripture we examine how the command “You shall not steal” speaks directly to modern life — our work, our money, our time, and our relationship with God. Jesus calls us to give Caesar what belongs to Caesar and to give God our firstfruits. Paul reminds us that love fulfils the law, and that honest work should lead to generosity that meets real need.
We also confront an uncomfortable truth: sometimes the greatest theft is not money but the gifts, truth, and calling God entrusted to us. Like Jonah, fear and pressure can tempt us to run from what God asks us to say or do.
But the message does not end in accusation. It ends in hope.
Romans chapter eight reminds us that the Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness, intercedes when words fail, and leads us back to lives marked by courage, integrity, and grace.
If your faith feels stretched by financial pressures, cultural expectations, or personal compromise, this conversation invites you to return to the cross, give God your firstfruits, and walk again in radical, honest obedience.
The hope throughout this conversation is rooted in Romans chapter eight. The Holy Spirit helps us in our weakness, intercedes when words fail, and leads us toward lives marked by courage, integrity, and grace.
If your faith feels stretched by financial pressures, cultural tension, or personal compromise, this episode invites you to return to the cross, trust God with your firstfr
Do not let this be the end of the conversation.

Welcome, Gratitude, And A Provocation
SPEAKER_00Good morning and welcome to this broadcast, this professional outfit. Wow. Hashtag Christian Straight Talk wherever you are across the world. We thank you so much to everybody. Serious, we thank you so much to everybody across the globe that is downloading all these podcasts and uh everybody in Amazon Music and Spotify and Buzzsprout, so many platforms that we're on sharing this stuff out. You know what? We thank God for such a time as this. I really believe that we are blessed. But are we following Jesus or are we following the world? Are we in the church or are we out of the church? God is with you. Whatever way you look at it at this moment, don't have that uh heavy hammer on you about you've got to get yourself to church. What I would say is get yourself to Jesus. Good morning, Ben.
SPEAKER_01Good morning, world. And uh wow, that's a revelation, Ben. You don't have to be in a church to know Jesus. That's do you know what? I never knew that. Already 25 years. What about a fellow who's in the church and went, shouted out, hallelujah, praise the Lord, and someone said, We don't do that in this church. He said, Well, I found Jesus, so we didn't find him in his church. There's a lot of that going on. There's a lot going on, isn't there? There's a lot of that going on. You can be in a church, you can be baptized, you can be confirmed, you can have all the bells.
SPEAKER_00You can be circumcised, you can have the full Jewish ceremony, but not have a relationship with Jesus Christ. Or not know Jesus Christ.
SPEAKER_01Because it what's it about, Ben?
SPEAKER_00It's about your heart, it's your heart. And it's about you know, every time we speak, every time we talk, every time we have conversations, it always brings up these two things the heart of a person and the cross. Uh-uh. Yeah, that's two when you when you listen to some of the stuff we talk about, and actually I don't listen to any of it, it's really because of not you I can't explain it now at the moment. But um, what's really, really interesting is the heart of a person and the cross of Calvary, you know?
SPEAKER_01It's very interesting.
SPEAKER_00The connection, the connection, the heart on the cross, and so many people are in really big churches, it all looks like it's ticking all the boxes in in religion and it is doing all that. But are they are they where's the cross? Can you see a cross sinager walk in the building? Are the pastors and the leaders are they are they preaching on the blood? There's so much to look at, isn't it? Now we are living in really powerful times. We're we're at the end door, aren't we?
SPEAKER_01Well I've got to tell you, every now we've discussed that and especially about crosses in churches. I mean it's a big thing, and I think we could do a a deep dive and a podcast on that at some point. Yeah. Um, but every church I've gone in to since, I've looked, and you know, some very well known, very large churches dripping in rolling in moolah. There's no cross. There's no cross. There's no cross. And you know, what so that tells you where the teaching is, doesn't it, really, if there's no cross there.
SPEAKER_00So so that's another sort of red flag, really, for me to bring it up. I've been caught in that, Simon. Like I think like many of us, we get so caught in the um the Muppet Show of church, don't we? Where we're like puppets dancing around or spitting image.
SPEAKER_01That could be even a better You'd be the old man in the gallery with moaning like Yeah, you're right, we get caught up in that.
SPEAKER_00You get caught in the puppeteeras, do you know what I mean? Controlling you. It's a good performance.
Nativity, Money, And The Crib Over The Cross
SPEAKER_01The the um the oh it's a marvellous big screen up there. There's there's great stuff going on.
SPEAKER_00Look what we're coming up to now, Nativity. And if you look at some of the mega churches, they're even charging a tenner. A tenner to go and watch a nativity.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_00Why why lit serious what where in the Bible will you find Jesus going, uh, actually, mum, I'm not gonna do that miracle. I want a tenner for every litre of wine I'm gonna do now. Jesus didn't charge for anything. What he said, the price has been paid. You're free. There's no price. You're not doing a nativity, are you? No, actually, this is really serious. We are not doing a nativity, we are not having carols. Honestly, this this has been really pressed on my heart. We'll have the Christmas tree, the tree will go up, um, and we won't put a fairy on it. Um, like a lot of churches. Seriously, we're not having a carol service, and we are not having a nativity this year because I honestly believe over the years so much has been driven at the crib and not the cross. And we focus so much on the crib and we do so I I think I believe a lot of effort goes more into Christmas than it does for Easter.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I think you're right. I think because it's a world thing, isn't it? It's a worldly thing. Plus the other thing, of course, Ben. You you know, you have difficulty finding three wise men and a virgin, don't you, in this part of the world, do you know?
SPEAKER_00Well, that is another that is another issue. We can find cross genders and all types of things, but we can't find a heterosexual man. We're we're struggling in the world of church because anything goes. Anything goes, man. So that'd be interesting, wouldn't it? What what type of nativities are we gonna see? Oh, well we're gonna see all we're gonna see.
SPEAKER_01I'm very interested to my grandchildren what what they're doing, you know, because it's got it's gonna be three trends.
Cultural Drift And Compromise In Churches
Today’s Focus: Thou Shalt Not Steal
SPEAKER_00The other side of the uh the other side of the what the church has got to do, the church has got to spit its dummy out and start speaking the truth because it'd be interesting to do It's too late, I think, by some places, Ben. I think the the the U-turn would be too too much for him. There is that I read something, I won't go into the because I'd get myself in a bit more trouble. I read something on social media the other day, this man in America is batting the other way, and other things were going on, and and the Christian that was bringing scripture to this preacher, man in the church, in the pulpit, was absolutely ridiculing him for being a heterosexual straight man from the pulpit. That's where we are. And and yeah, that's so that fits in with the subject today. When you re Simon has got a great word from God and it's come from the scripture. So, Simon, what are we actually in today? Well, today, man, we're going to back into the Ten Commandments.
Spiritual Adultery Recap And Real-Life Tests
SPEAKER_01I tell you what, because man, they're so revealing. And and we are going to major on um Exodus 20 verse 15, which says, Thy shall not steal. And uh, and we're gonna look at all aspects of that. But before we get into that, I just want to just quickly go back to last week's um uh which was we talked we really spoke about spiritual adultery. And if you if if you haven't caught that podcast, I'd say go back and listen to it because yeah um I know that there's I know just a couple of people that have listened to it. So we have got a couple of people out there who listened to it. Yeah, that was us. That was us. So I've got a couple I know a couple of fellows who listened to it, and uh, and it's really impacted them this whole thing about spiritual adultery. And and you brought a real great phrase. Um uh you called it round the bin of life and uh the fire bin of life. The fire bin of life, yeah. And where where wherever you are in a workplace, wherever you are in in a social gathering, would do you stand up and and and and uh let people know you're you're a Christian. Well we said that on a Thursday, didn't we? I'll tell you what, on Friday morning, mate. On the Friday morning, I took my car into um took my vehicle in to get serviced uh to a mate of mine. I know um he knows uh you know I've got a bit of faith. Um but another fellow joined us and we're having a cup of tea, and I wanted to know some stories about the police. You know, tell us some dirt. Tell us some stories about when you were in the old bill. Well, I slipped right into it, mate. I slipped right into it. I was, you know.
SPEAKER_00They whipped you up, didn't they? Oh, correct. Seriously, though, isn't that easy without realizing and I came away thinking, Lord.
SPEAKER_01What happened now? Thursday we were talking about holy, holy, we were talking about the next day, the first opportunity Lucifer's fueling a conversation right in the middle.
SPEAKER_00It but I'm I'm not I'm not afraid, when I say I'm afraid to say, but this is what has happened from the garden, isn't it? From the garden of Eden. We are living in a fallen world, so all of us will get engaging in quite unusual conversations unless you are literally a monk and you have taken yourself to the Tibetan hillside and locked yourself in a cave, you're not going to escape the fire bin issues that every one of us has, and that has just whipped up on you. You didn't instigate it, you was just chatting. Before you know it, you're in a conversation and you think that was more that that that was like where did that come from? Where did it come from? I mean, why did I speak like that?
Everyday Theft: Time, Claims, Character
SPEAKER_01Great guys, lovely fellas, men of the world. Um, they were efforting and Jeff. And I I don't go down that route, it's not in me to these days, but but the the stories just rolled out one after the other.
SPEAKER_00Do you know what? But do you know this I think what what we've got to really pause and be careful of here is is not wrap ourselves up in this Christian, well, you can't even call it Christianity really in this nation. You can't wrap yourself up in this religious ret rhetoric of a of a dova dova and wrap yourself up. You you have to go into the world. Christ says go into all the world. Now we learn lessons, don't we? When we go into a situation like that, oh Lord, I fouled. Well, actually, no, God still used you because you you are a light. You are a light. So your light shines, and so many times stuff that comes out of our trap is not always, you know, what it should be, you know.
SPEAKER_01So I think you can you if you go down that route, you've got to put the caveat on it and say, you know, I think I'll just thank the Lord He's taking me out of all that stuff these days, you know. Because you know, I I've got to tell you, I would not be here now if it wasn't for the Lord. You know, I'd be I don't know, serving a prison sentence or six foot under, or in, you know, uh or in a or or in a vase on the mantelpiece somewhere. Do you know that's where I'd be if I if it wasn't for the Lord. So um you can immediately turn it into a uh an opportunity.
SPEAKER_00You can, yeah, definitely.
SPEAKER_01And it's it's like um I was it yesterday or the day before I can't remember, you know, somebody hacked my my Facebook account, you know, Crockey, they wanted to be me. I mean, I I I wish they'd taken uh pay the bills and all that sort of stuff at the same time. But we can use that as a I use that as an opportunity to to um come out with um to to post something uh Psalm 139, you know, we're wonderfully and fearfully made, you know, we're unique people, which we are. So, you know, just be encouraged out there. Whatever we say, whatever we we we do, whatever the subject we go into, it's it it's to help us live a better Christian life. That's what we're all we're trying to do, and trying to encourage people because we are unique. God did break the mould when He made each of us, and we are wonderfully and fearfully made. So so we just want to help people through what the Lord's given us to get closer to Jesus. That's all we're looking for, Ben, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00That that's exact that's exactly right. There's so being a believer, we have to experience the scenarios and the general fire being issues of life, and then when we come into this other scripture, straight away I looked at that and thought that don't really apply to me when actually it does apply to me. The next one that we're on the list going down in the Ten Commandments, it applies to me on every level.
SPEAKER_01On every level, because I've I've just yeah so I've just stolen in my former life, this yeah, but in this in this life as well, because we'll go into it, you know, yeah. So this do not steal. We are doing a deep dive. We're talking about, as you quite rightly said, IKEA pencils. We're talking about it.
Taxes, Caesar, And Robbing God
SPEAKER_00Put me peeking me cap down any police officers I've paid the price in the name of Jesus.
SPEAKER_01There's a few lying around. Um we're talking about property, but we're talking about time you steal, could steal from your employers, you know, stationary, all that sort of stuff. We're talking about insurance claims, we're talking about character, stealing someone's character.
SPEAKER_00So straight away we could quite easily read verse 15 of Exodus chapter 20 and go, Thou shalt not steal. Well, actually, Jesus, now I'm born again. I haven't lifted a pencil for my IKEA, I haven't done anything, I didn't accidentally not pay for that when the till didn't add up right, I just walked away. You know, so there are many physical areas where we could could be in that situation of actually I I I did at that point, I did, but you don't you don't admit it, and and something and so there could be areas still as a believer where that that text comes into play, but the biggest area I'm looking at now Oh, you're finding your tax forming correctly. Um I didn't know how to pay tax. I thought that was only for the elite. Oh, do you have to pay tax? I don't know as a vicar, do you? I don't know. I don't know. I thought I was exempt from all that sort of stuff. What's the self-assessment form? It just used to come through and I used to burn it because I thought it was a scam. Oh, I'm so sorry, the keeper of the purse. But that sort of thing.
SPEAKER_01That sort of thing, Ben, you know, yeah.
SPEAKER_00So you don't need to go out and do an armed robbery to put yourself under that label. It's misleading the authorities with some information. So it is so any so this is a really interesting subject, and it's tax and VAT. I hear the world.
SPEAKER_01You are a doughboy of the Christian world, aren't you? No income tax, no VAT.
Firstfruits, Heart Motive, And Masters
SPEAKER_00I hear the sound of stillness across Christian businesses. Try and run a business completely down the line. The more you run a business down the line, the more you get penalized. The more you've got to do things right, the more the system. So, how many Christian business owners, how many believers, how many people that we are just speaking to and about where I didn't quite fill that form in correctly, where I didn't actually give that all the information over. But to me, what you're talking about now, the biggest area of stealing is robbing God. To me, that is the that's the one that has just made me want to get under the table. Yeah, stealing.
SPEAKER_01Can you steal from God? Yeah, you can. You can.
SPEAKER_00You can. You can steal from God.
SPEAKER_01I mean so just what did Jesus say?
SPEAKER_00So thou shalt not fill in your self-assessment form.
SPEAKER_01He said, give unto Caesar what is Caesar's. Oh, that's what he said. Yeah. So there we have taxation.
SPEAKER_00So exactly. So this is a really tricky area, innit?
SPEAKER_01You're gonna see what are Christians now going to going down trying to catch a fish and get a couple of quid out of his mouth.
SPEAKER_00But when you look at that, cheating the system in many ways. Ducking and diving, but get back in a pulpit on a Sunday, self-assessment done online, accidentally pressed the wrong button. Oh, it was a m oh, I didn't realise I made that mistake. My maths are not right. Oh Lord, what's gone on? So it's an interesting subject.
SPEAKER_01I'm just um I'm just reading this bit here in in um well it's it's in three of the gospels, in it. Jesus counsels a rich young ruler. He said, as he was going on the road, uh a man came up to and knelt before him and asked him, Good teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life? In one of the gospels he said, Jesus looked at him and loved him. Right. Yeah. So Jesus said to him, and he knew his heart. He immediately knew his heart. He said, Why do you call me good? He said, No one is good but one. That is God. No one is good. He said, You know the commandments, do not commit adultery, do not commit murder, do not steal, do not bear false witness, do not defraud, honour your father and mother. And he said to him, Teacher, all these things I've kept from my youth. Now here's someone who's kept the commandments. Kept the commandments. And then Jesus looking at him loved him. And he said this, he said, One thing you lack, go and sell whatever you have and give to the poor, then you will have treasure in heaven and come and take up your cross and follow me. And he was sad at this word and he went away sorrowful, for he had great possessions. Well, that's that's a heart thing, innit, Bill.
SPEAKER_00That's your heart.
SPEAKER_01That's your heart.
SPEAKER_00That it comes back to that same vessel in your innermost being your heart. Would I give everything over for Jesus? Would I bring everything to the to the altar and give him do I give him absolutely everything? Do I lay everything out before him? Do I do it when you I think we better pack up and go on.
Prosperity Promises Vs People In Need
SPEAKER_01And that comes down to um I think it's in I think it's in um Romans I think it's in Romans 11 then 16. It comes down to first fruits. Right. So do we give God the first fruits?
SPEAKER_00One for me, one for Jesus, one for me, one for Jesus, one for me.
SPEAKER_01Because he says in Romans 11, Paul says he says this, Romans 11, 16, he says, For if the first fruit is holy, right, the lump is also holy. And if the root is holy, so are the branches. And if some of the branches that were broken off, and you being a wild olive tree were grafted in among them, and with them became a partaker of the root and the fatness of the olive tree. Do not boast against the branches. But if you do boast, remember that you do not support a root, but the root supports you. So what is what he's saying there is saying that give me everything. First, your heart.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, but Lord, you've got my heart, I'm saved. This has nothing to do with salvation. And this is nothing to do with tithing. It's nothing to do with tithing. Time is giving your time, giving yourself, it's giving your thoughts, it's giving excuse me, giving yourself to Christ. Literally giving yourself because we are servants. So what does a servant do? A servant works his master, does it? Works and serves the master. So who is my master? If I am if I am uh finding that the the master is the world, it's impossible to please God. Yeah, yeah, because you can't serve two masters of the world. So when you look at that scripture, that I'm not I'm not a robber, I'm I'm not robbing. The greatest danger that anyone can fall into is literally robbing God of what he is asking you to do and living the way that he's asking you to live. Denominations are robbers. When you look at certain denominations, they are robbing, they are stealing straight out.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's a big one, Ben, isn't it?
SPEAKER_00It's a big one because and then I can hear them all shouting at me and doing whatever they want to do. But the question is, is are you are you teaching the Ten Commandments? Because if if you are not teaching, and it's got nothing, look, it's got nothing to do with lifestyle. Lifestyle is a personal choice. So a person, that's what the Bible says, never judge a person. Don't it it don't look at them because you've got a forest, they got a they got a speck and you've got a plank in your eye. So lifestyle choices and living, all I can do is say, Lord, help me to live by this word, help me to live in the faithfulness of your your gospel. But when you've got denominations literally standing in pulpits coming against God's words, they they are robbing what they're robbing, they're robbing God and they're robbing congregations of God.
SPEAKER_01They're robbing a congregation of soon.
Storehouse, Tithes, And Feeding The Poor
SPEAKER_00So what does that mean? That means that they they will they might not go to her Her Majesty's pleasure into uh into the prisons, but what they will have is blood on their hands. There's nothing worse to have blood on your hands. Well, if you're a leader, if you're a leader or a denomination and you claim to be the church, you you are not just robbing God, you are robbing that person that is coming under your voice, your teaching, and you are teaching someone something that is not quite right in the Bible.
SPEAKER_01Listen, you know, Jesus didn't make it complicated. No, none of this stuff is complicated. It's if you substitute man for God, you we're in trouble. And when you put man at the centre, we're in trouble. You know, Jesus was asked, what was the greatest commandment? He said, Love the Lord your God with all your heart. So that's your first fruit, that is your first calling. Love the Lord your God.
SPEAKER_00That if if that if I do that as a leader or a believer, whoever and wherever I am, what that will do, that will that will give me freedom. You will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. But also that will give me truth, biblical truth, and then we share the biblical truth, and then you are giving other people. People freedom, but religion and wrong preaching and teaching are making people slaves.
SPEAKER_01I think you're right. I think you're really right here. I think you're on to something here because you know you're robbing God.
SPEAKER_00These Ten Commandments, as we've fed, that that that there's the heart. Simon, I know we have a little bit of chuckles around them, but seriously, when when you really look at these Ten Commandments and you look at the severity of it, the bar is impossible to reach. So what should it do? It should make any believer go, Lord, I repent. I'm so sorry through my attitude, my thinking. I've robbed you through tithes and offerings, I've robbed you through time. Robbing God of time, that is a massive thing as well.
SPEAKER_01You know, but you're robbing you're robbing your congregation of the truth, of the word. Really, because if you know uh Jesus said the two you love the Lord your God with all your your heart, your your mind and your soul. And the second one is love your neighbour as yourself. On these or the commandments uh hang. And uh so that those two those two what he said, everything else hangs on these two. Everything else is on now. So Paul the apostle said in Romans 13, 8, he goes, owe no one anything, which is another thing we've spoken about. Clear the clear the clear the floor, clear the deck, clear the credit card, clear the year big subject. Yeah, this time of year, it's so easy to pop things on that credit card.
SPEAKER_00And that is the frightening thing. The the energy crisis, the the worry of jobs, the worry of getting Christmas presents, all that sort of stuff. So easy you can pop the credit card out and go, Oh, do you know what? Yeah, bang.
Give Where God Leads, See The Fruit
SPEAKER_01But the Bible says the Bible says, owe no one anything except to love one another. For he who loves another has fulfilled the law. For the commandments, you shall not commit adultery, you shall not murder, you shall not steal, you shall not bear false witness, you shall not covet, and if there is any other commandment, they are all summed up in this saying, namely, you shall love your neighbour as yourself. Love does no harm to a neighbour, therefore love is the fulfilment of the law.
SPEAKER_00It's you know, Paul's just he's brought that so beautifully, and like Simon said in Exodus chapter uh twenty verse two, it says, I am the Lord thy God, and I have brought you up out of the land of Egypt and away from bondage. But then as Simon says, and the scripture says, and he's reading there, thou shalt have no other gods before me. So when I put other gods, and it is so easy to do that without thinking.
SPEAKER_01And what we're seeing, Ben, is all of these commandments work together. Yeah, so they they flow together, and they all they're not separate from one another. No, because they all move together, they're all interjected to each other. So if you're committing spiritual adultery, uh that means you're putting something else before God. If you're stealing from God, that you're putting someone else before God, you're not giving in the first fruit. So here we we you know it's set out in a plane, and people do separate these, they're all intermingled, which is why then if we break one, we break the lot.
Can We Steal God’s Gifts And Calling?
SPEAKER_00That that's right. So how what do we do? So straight away. What do we do? We're in trouble. And you've got the religious and you've got the mega churches preaching all this stuff out there, and it's still going on about the prosperity gospel when the UK is financially broken and and people are sewing into men's uh pyramid selling, and certain families in certain areas of of the nation, and I would say a massive percentage of us are thinking, I've actually got to turn the lights on tonight, I've got to put the heating on. So all of a sudden, everybody that has sewn into these ministries, sowing, so and so and sowing for years and years and years, giving financially and then expecting to have a financial reward, and then suddenly going, I actually can't put the boiler on. I actually can't feed the children. Because so what are you sewing into?
SPEAKER_01But you it's it's worth nothing because you're doing it with the wrong heart. That's right, because your heart condition if you're doing it to expect something back, if you're doing it to to um look at uh that that that scripture in Luke says, you know, what you g what you give will come back to you press down. No, if you're giving it for that's the wrong reason.
SPEAKER_00So it cancels that out.
SPEAKER_01Cancels it out.
SPEAKER_00But the the the way that them preachers and and and they word that, they are very clever how they word it, and they put it to you in such a way that God wants to give you finances when actually when you look at this sort of stuff by sewing into that you're actually robbing the storehouse, the true storehouse of God.
SPEAKER_01And I'll put it another way, Ben. If you are in a ministry and you're asking for money so that you can live your life. Carry on the lifestyle. Listen to what it says in Ephesians. It says it says, Therefore, putting away lying, let each one of you speak truth through his neighbour. For we are members of of one another. Be angry and do not sin. Do not let the sun go down on your wrath, nor give place to the devil. Listen to this. Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labour, working with his hands, what is good, that he may have something to give him who has in need. So the Bible tells you, get out of there and do a bit of work.
SPEAKER_00Do some work. What did God do on a Sabbath day? He rested. So God worked.
SPEAKER_01Step out of that ministry and get a proper job.
SPEAKER_00And get a and do and do what you're doing for nothing.
SPEAKER_01Mate, you yeah, doing a ministry for nothing. For zero.
SPEAKER_00Because it's your calling.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, jump in uh and be a Tesco or a cardo deliverer. You you can bring the word of the truth, you can bring the truth to people's doorsteps, can't you?
SPEAKER_00I think we are living in. To fund you.
SPEAKER_01And then that comes down to the the question then is am I in Ben, tell us how much you've got in the offering plate, that's something.
Truth Under Pressure: Jonah Moments
SPEAKER_00Right, okay. This is serious. So here where we are at the moment, we had I think it was£21.£21 in the offering. See, people just can't afford to put any money in, can they? People can't afford to put and then then I'm sitting on an electric bill that is like roughly£120,£130 a week to keep everything moving. And then you think to yourself, God, so this stretches my faith, not because I want the money, it's that all the responsibility sits on me. So when I look at that and think, God, what what am I gonna do? Then I have to go into a place of faith, and I have to go, God, you're gonna have to do a miracle. So there's a lot within that, yeah. So this week there was 21 quid in the in the offering.
SPEAKER_01And how many people are in the church, Ben?
SPEAKER_00Quite a lot. Quite a lot, you know. It's it's a hard and I I understand we're in hard times. We're really in hard times.
SPEAKER_01Oh, surely someone could, you know, mate, if they all put a quid in, you'd have probably doubled your.
SPEAKER_00So it's really interesting because there is a ministry out there, and there's a lot of stuff that oh, you don't need to tithe all this sort of stuff when when actually the prosperity gospel is telling you to give, but it's giving to them. But the Bible always makes it clear you give because you want to give, you give because you want to sew into a godly ministry, you give because you want to see the gospel of Jesus Christ funded in certain areas, and and I'm not we're not saying that all ministries are like this, of course we're not saying that. But when you look in the in the book of Malachi, that is a very strong text, and a lot of people will scrub that text out. Where are you robbing God?
SPEAKER_01I'm just looking at that, Ben, you know, gone.
SPEAKER_00Where you which it's serious, innit, Simon? In tithes and offerings, you are under a curse, your whole nation, because you are robbing me. Bring your whole tithe into the storehouse that there may be food in my house. Isn't that interesting? Food in my house, it's not talking about red carpets and lifestyles, it's funding, yeah. So when you look at um what what does tithes and offerings do? They come into the church, and the church, every church should be a frontline missional church where it's where it's doing what the Bible says about the biblical church. When you look at the apostles and the disciples, it says that they sold everything they had and they committed themselves to the preaching and the teaching and they sorted out the waiting on the tables and they fed and they watered and they looked after. But what we are finding in finding is that there are a lot of ministries, churches, holding that banner up of the social justice one just to get themselves another tick in a certain box. When actually it's a scripture, it's scripture feed, water, clove.
SPEAKER_01I just I struggle, Ben. You know, I listen to um you know uh a radio station that's out there, yeah. They're forever, a Christian radio station, asking for big fun. Asking for money, and I I think I would you know I struggle. I yeah, you need funds, I I get it. I get that, but but if you're true truly trusting in the Lord, then the Lord will bring the funds.
SPEAKER_00And he he does do that. So this week, I have got I've got the bailiffs probably coming out in half hour. You know what I mean? And I am now the reason we are behind on the electric bill by 730 quid is simply because the energy supplier, when the government gave out that that allowance, they held two bills back. So we are looking online going, everything's clear, we're clean, we're clean, paying it beautiful, getting it every done each week, each week. Suddenly, the last few days we have found on the online statement that one month is 380 and the other month is 420, October and November, and you're thinking, but I asked you the questions, so that has put us on the back oof. So I have to go by literal faith. People probably look through the lens and think, Oh, he's dripping. I I ain't got I ain't got a pound. I haven't got a pound to my name, and I'm not fighting of saying it.
SPEAKER_01I think I've looked just quickly, I think I think there'd be a lot of people out there right now across the world in the exactly the same situation. In exactly the same situation. It happened to me, you know. I uh all of a sudden the the energy bill went went up. It bang bang, it tripled. So and I looked and and I looked and you got a bat I got a backlog of 600 quid and I thought, where did that come from that come from? So you know we're battling away with them at this moment in time, but so it's a battle.
SPEAKER_00So what's a battle? But the battle belongs to the Lord. So what I've got to be careful of is that I don't rob God in this situation of faith. Lord, I'm trusting you. Lord, I'm trusting you in this situation, Lord, you will make a way, Lord, you you will pay this bill, Lord, you will somehow, some way, Lord, you know that I haven't got it. You know that it's not in the kitty, it's not there. So when so you can rob God, I think you could put it like this robbing God, stealing. So automatically you think, oh, I've lifted this, I've lifted that, trainers, clothes, cars, all that sort of stuff. When actually, as a believer, you can be a bigger thief than anyone else.
SPEAKER_01A bigger thief, and I think it's more important, you know.
SPEAKER_00And that is gonna hurt people because they're gonna go, what are you calling me a thief?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, no, but how dare you say that? Well, I think I think these podcasts should challenge people. I think you challenge, look at your lifestyle. And what where we're we're going with this week after week is we're asking you to look at the time you're spending with the Lord. So, how much time do I spend with Jesus? And if you look, and I said time and time again, you know, uh the big thing is the TV. Uh the TV and the call. When you sit down and watch maybe two or three hours a night, are you giving two or three hours to the Lord? And and the answer is no.
SPEAKER_00So what on the telly. The answer will be no. No. So what on the tell is holy, righteous, and pure?
SPEAKER_01Well, uh certainly nothing after a certain weather, I suppose.
Fear, Conviction, And Radical Faith
SPEAKER_00You could watch the weather. But but seriously, when you look at the tell and very cleverly and over the years and the generations, we've been desensitized to what our eyes see.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So you mentioned the word holiness. The Bible says holy, holy, holy is the Lord, most worthy of praise. In all seriousness, and I asked myself the question because I'm responsible for this. Is the church looking holy?
SPEAKER_01Well, the the Bible tells us, doesn't it, Ben, if the first fruit if you if you're not giving the Lord the first fruit, then it's not holy, is it? So literally sort our lives out.
SPEAKER_00So you can be the biggest thief and not behind bars, but literally be a scripture thief. Because you're not, and it's got nothing, this is really important. It has nothing to do with salvation because God saved us and God set us free, so we are all on a journey. Every Christian is on a journey where we are being shaped by the Master's hands, and our lives will never look completely right. But the more you want Jesus, the more you will be convicted by the Holy Spirit, the more you want, and the more you pray, and the more you go, Oh, wretched man am I, you will be highlighted, and certain areas of your life will be ring-fenced with a highlighter pen from the Holy Spirit that this needs tidying, that needs cleaning, but the outside world looks in and goes, Oh, they've got it wrapped up. No, yeah, no, no. Actually, the more I want Jesus, I thought my life was in a lovely little Christmas box with a bow and it looked beautiful. Well, actually, Christ has undone it, smashed the box open, and gone, oh my god, I didn't realise how far I am away. But I'm not away, but because I'm coming under conviction of the Holy Spirit.
SPEAKER_01As we said before, Ben, I think the closer, the more deeper. The more you want him, the more he's exposed, and the more we realise, you know, and that so what happens is that we're not worthy, and and so we need him more. So it's a it's one of those things if you sit back and you think you've got it cracked, then you're in a dangerous place. Yeah. But if you think, you know, you feel if you're humble and want the Lord more, you're in a great place. Because the more that you realise you you you need him, the more to realise what a wretched man am I, the more you realise that you need to get closer to him. So I think you see it's a it's a circle, isn't it? So yeah.
SPEAKER_00So in that book of Malachi, before we go to what you're going to, why do what why why should someone give into to the ministry? What is the purpose of giving into a ministry? According to the scripture, it says, bring it to the tithe and everything to the storehouse, so that there may be food in the house. Test me in this, says the Lord Almighty, and see if I'll not throw open the floodgates of heaven and pour out such a blessing that you will not be, there is not enough room for you to store it. So the the basic I understanding of giving to a ministry is to look after the poor.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and I mean the Bible says that um you know uh an oxen shouldn't be fettered and all that sort of thing, but I honestly believe that that you know rather than ministries searching after your money, it's up to the Lord to put it on people's hearts.
SPEAKER_00To sew into sew into the ones where he wants you. And Simon is so right, sewing into the storehouse. Yes. So when you sew into the biblical church, when you give to that, you should see that that church, there's evidence that it's clothing the naked, watering the thirsty, feeding the hungry.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, I don't I think I think all all of that have been, but I honestly think that that the Lord will put it on your heart. To give. To give. And and you don't have to worry about then about about the about looking down the checklist. Uh because the Lord said give. And we just give. And we don't worry about where it's spent or what it's done. The Lord has told us.
SPEAKER_00Just give it.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_00But yeah, so that so you give with your heart, it comes back to your heart, you give your heart, you put it in a storehouse, yeah. But as you give, you will see evidence of a community being changed. You see evidence.
SPEAKER_01Well, that's why, and you as if the Lord's putting it on your heart, you will see the fruits of that. You see the fruit. Yeah. I mean uh it doesn't make it easy. It doesn't make it easy, mate. Now he says in in 1 Timothy 6.17, he says, Command those who are rich in this present age not to be haughty, not or nor to trust in the certain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy. Let them do good that they are rich in good works, ready to give, willing to share, storing up for themselves good foundation for the time to come that they may hold on to eternal life. So, you know, give where the Lord says. Give, give. You know, it it also says every good gift and every perfect gift is from above. From above. It comes down from the Father of Lights.
SPEAKER_00So it's it's it's it's about having a relationship with Jesus Christ. To know that your Redeemer lives, and because he lives, you can face tomorrow. And the reason I say that is when you when you are looking to Christ, you get you get a anction, you get wise to what to do, what to say, what to sew into. So as you sew into that, you're sewing into the storehouse, and it says that you can't outgive God. You can't outgive God, no. No. So that that that is the key. That is the key that when you sew into the right place, the right place with the right motive, with the right heart, the right heart, and then and it's not the amount you sew.
SPEAKER_01Then as it says in Luke 6.38, it'll come back pressed down, shaken, over overflowing.
SPEAKER_00Yeah. Um so there we have an old a New Testament scripture coming back to the old testament. So the old and the new run together. Oh, yeah. So you can never think they don't. You can't look at the scripture where a lot of churches go, well, you can't, and you know, the old the old is not. See, Malachi is just putting it in that way as you've just read it out in the gospel. So it all goes together. It all goes together.
SPEAKER_01So so and don't forget, you know, and don't forget um the Lord loves a cheerful giver.
SPEAKER_00Yes, Lord, and here the back counts on the screen up there. Thank you in the name of Jesus.
SPEAKER_01So there's not many cheerful people in your church. We're also happy. Lord I Lord, I can't give, Lord, I just can't give. We're only joking, we're only joking. Listen, I want to ask you this question, Ben, before we um as we come crock, it's 40. We're 41 minutes.
SPEAKER_00And we were talking on stealing, and and when you as soon as you talk about that one line, you think, actually, you you think of the physical stealing, you know. Yeah, there's a lot more to be said on this, yeah. You read the text and the Holy Spirit opens the text up and then suddenly it realizes that actually I'm robbing God. Well, I wanted to ask you this question.
SPEAKER_01Um because I don't know, can can we can we rob God of the gifts he's given us? Definitely. Oh, you say that quickly, yeah.
SPEAKER_00Look at Jonah. Yes, God gave him a word.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, look at that.
SPEAKER_00God gave him a word and he went, I'm going on a cruise liner. I ain't delivering that. I'm gonna I'm going. I am not delivering that. So there you there you there you have a man that was given a gift, a word, you are my instrument, and you are gonna deliver that. Now, this is happening to this very day. There are ministers of the gospel that have been given a calling and not living in the calling. I'm not talking about lifestyle, I'm talking about delivering the truth. You imagine when you're sitting across from the Lord. The eyes of Christ, the eyes of the Father.
SPEAKER_01Wow.
SPEAKER_00Why did you not deliver the message? Because I know that there are, and you will come into this as well, I know that there are preachers and teachers, people that lead services, that have given a message that is not a godly message, that has been my message. So they're running away from the message of the truth. The message of the truth.
SPEAKER_01And but and uh I listened, funnily enough, I listened to our good friend uh Billy Blessed. Yeah, I listened to Billy uh and and he talked about this, talked about Jonah, and he said, if you want to run away, like Jonah did, yeah, he found a boat, didn't he? And he said, The devil will always find you a boat and always give you the money and wherewithal to jump on that boat and run away from God's calling. Run away from God. Yeah.
SPEAKER_00So there are a lot of people, I believe, running from God's calling and they run most of their life.
SPEAKER_01But they're robbing God of his gifts.
SPEAKER_00But it comes into this scripture. You're robbing God. Because you're not delivering what he has given you to deliver.
SPEAKER_01I mean this is a Ben, I think this is a huge subject. And we'll we'll probably go on to do another one next week because if you uh willingly take drugs and stuff like that, which robs yeah you of your life, really. Exactly. So are you robbing God of the life that he's given you? The life so God you robbing, actually robbing God of the life he's given you.
SPEAKER_00He's he's given you hope, he's given you life, he's given you everything. Wow. And then I choose to go and live a different lifestyle. So if he doesn't rob you of your free will, that's the now that that's a frightening line. Free will.
SPEAKER_01That that is a a word that is just like So you standing before the Lord and he goes, This is the life we had planned for you. This is the life we would have liked you to.
SPEAKER_00This is the message I wanted you to say. This is the route you took, and this is why you're here now. I I'm gonna I'm gonna say something. I believe there are a lot of ministers that know the truth about this gender issue and won't preach it, so they are robbing. They st I tell you what, I'm skating on ice, I know I can feel it. I can feel, I can feel almost, but you know what I'm saying. So if you are not preaching the gospel as the gospel is said as creation and biology through the word of God, if you are not preaching what it says, you are holding back, and you are a Jonah running. I don't want to deliver that message, and there are ministers, and I'm in this position, when you look at the scriptures and you are ransacking, and you have got this big press on the outside coming to you like a train that's hitting the church on every level of life, and you're looking for the scripture, going, Lord, give me a word, give me a word, Lord, show me, Lord, that this isn't right, this don't line up. Help me, help me, help me. I know that there are ministers that have got their arm up their back, knowing the truth, but can't preach the truth because of legalities, certain policies can't speak about in the workplace. When you start preaching that gospel of truth, that's when that's when Jesus and Peter scenario comes in. You will deny me. I won't.
SPEAKER_01But you imagine, Ben, if if we had powerful leaders standing up all over the world preach is preaching the truth, saying, This is this is wrong, this is this is not biblical, this is this is the truth. Yeah, you imagine that the the the wave and and the strength and the power that would help, you know?
SPEAKER_00But what we have we have a religious order, an organization that is being herded to a certain teaching and issue at the moment that is coming against the church and has been around for a long time. And I know that there are ministers that it doesn't sit in their spirit, but they are too frightened to bring bring a message. A mess in even me, I'm frightened to preach what I know online because I know the arrows will fire and there is a possibility you could lose.
SPEAKER_01Well, I was speaking to um uh a guy last night, and uh he's just started um monthing to uh do doing an assistant chaplaincy in uh a local hospital in Essex, and um great stuff. He said we're not allowed to preach the gospel, we're not allowed to speak the gospel. That's right. Unless you know they're invited, I guess, from the patient. So then what are you? You're just a friend. A friend. A befriender. Uh someone who goes and So there again and and puts her arm around somebody.
SPEAKER_00I know this world very, very well. Sees them die without the Lord. Chaplaincy. I know this world. You know it well. I know it very, very well, and I I know that as a as a Christian chaplain, you have really got you have got some challenges to face. If you are a Christian chaplain out there and you're working in the in that role, I pray for you right now. I really do, because I I know I know what you're up against, and what we've got to be careful of. There is coming a time when it's do I stand up or do I roll over and do I roll into the crowd? Do I roll into the crowd? And and and even if you take chaplaincy out of the equation and you say pastors, even when you go a bit further and say congregations, at this moment in time, the church within the UK and there are thousands of denominations, uncountable churches, and everyone is saying we are the church, everyone is saying we are the church, we have revival, we are the healing, we are the state church, this is our parish. You are hearing this conversation a lot, and if anyone says that statement, you will not compromise the teachings of Genesis to revelation. So there is a robbing going on, a robbing within denominational heresy teachings. This this word that we're looking at today, stealing, it throws open, it throws open the gate. It really does. Because automatically you think, right, I've been I was in IKEA, I I lifted that pencil, thank you, okay. That's my right. I was here, I was there, I'd done this, I took that. I didn't mean to, but it just happened to be in my car. I went into B and Q's or somewhere, I used a tape measure, and I put the tape measure in my pocket accidentally, I get in the car. Oh, I take that matter. It it so automatically we're always thinking of the physical of what the world says of what the lifting because the world the world um approves of uh tax dodging.
SPEAKER_01The world approves of uh knocking up your insurance.
SPEAKER_00We've got companies the world approves of all that dodginess, we've got massive brands, we can l name them so quickly and easily brands big the biggest corporations avoid tax, avoiding tax, ducking and diving. So so then as an employee, where does that make me in that employment?
SPEAKER_01And do I partner I partner with that? Oh yeah, that's that's the bigger.
SPEAKER_00I turn a bit of a I build a I turn a blind eye because my mortgage is hanging on it and I can't afford and I'll just keep going. Well you're compromised, don't you? So everyone, everyone is compromised, and I tell you what, Simon, these ten commandments they are really they are punching my chest.
SPEAKER_01Well, look, let's let's come in and land on a positive note because listen, if if if you've got your heart right, if you've got your motives right, amen. Come on, you know, let's let's be encouraged here and let's go into Romans 8, let's finish on an encouraging scripture. Start at 26, he said, um likewise the spirit also helps in our weaknesses. I love this. So here we are. You know, uh we can't we've said it time and time again, but you can't live this Christian life without the Holy Spirit. We cannot we couldn't live half an hour in this Christian life without the Holy Spirit. Believe me, I you know you you look at your heart, it's me. Yeah. It says, for we do not know what we should pray for as we ought. But the Spirit Himself makes the intercession for us. So that's lovely. We don't know, but the Spirit knows We don't know.
SPEAKER_00So that's very encouraging, isn't it, to know that you might be weak, broken, and busted and disgusted as a believer. But God sees your heart and and the Holy Spirit is the intercessor. In the intercessor. With groans and words that the English language cannot adhere to.
SPEAKER_01So I mean, this is another subject because you don't need an intercessor. You've got you've got a spiritual director out there that employ people as intercessors. You don't need intercessors because they're only spiritual intercessors for you, with groanings which cannot be uttered. Right? Now he who searches the hearts and knows what the mind of the spirit is, because he makes intercession for all the saints according to the will of God so for all the saints.
SPEAKER_00Now that that is a script, that is such a big conversation, innit?
SPEAKER_01No, it's a great conversation.
SPEAKER_00So when so you've got people in churches worrying about, I ain't made the prayer meeting, I can't make the prayer meeting, I can't pray, I'm tired, I'm weary. God sees what the scripture said, He sees your heart, he knows your mind, he knows your back is against the wall, he knows you are experiencing a Jonah, he knows you're a Jacob. Even look at Jacob, what a character. I love him so much.
SPEAKER_01No, but he's akin to you, but you're akin to him, he's a little wheel of dealer, isn't he? Yeah, yeah. When you look at that. But look, 28, and and uh we we love Romans 8, 28, and it says, and we know that all things work together for the good to those who love God to those who are called according to his purpose.
SPEAKER_00There you go. So it's got nothing about going into a building, it's got nothing to do with a Sunday morning at a certain time. What it has to do with is your heart condition. God knows your heart, God knows you're hungry for him, God knows you're in an employment that you are crying about, God knows that you're on a commute that you are busted over, God knows that you are stretched financially, God knows everything, but we've got to keep pressing, keep in the word of God. You never ever give up because God sees the Holy Spirit is the intercessor. Isn't that isn't that really comforting?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, yeah, yeah.
SPEAKER_00To know that I can be at home, I can have the worst day of my life, and I haven't even thought about God, and I get in the door and you collapse in your in your in your in your chair and you're sitting there, and God isn't even on your mind because you're so stressed and so fearful. He knows that you were going to sit in that chair feeling that. He knows before because he knows the end from the beginning, the beginning from the end, and he is interceding for you in your time of trial. It's like it's blown, blown up. It's a showstopper, innit? So all this performing in church and ministry, as Michael Cain said, It blew the doors off. It's blown the doors off. It's blown the doors off.
SPEAKER_01But it has, in it.
SPEAKER_00All this stuff. So believers can find comfort in just taking a moment and going, hang on. Right. I've got to recalibrate, I've got to I've got to re look at this word Christianity. What does Christianity mean? What is it about? What is the biblical church? What is creation? What is the birth, the death, the resurrection of Christ? What is eschatology, the rapture of the church? All these big fundamental points of Christianity and go, do you know what? I'm alright. I'm okay. I'm okay. I'm alright. And then fear will suddenly go. And then when fear goes, you start to think right, you start to see again properly. Yeah, the scales come off because fear is the driver. Fear drove Jonah. Fear drove drove Jacob. Fear, I can't remember the scripture, it's gone, it's gone, it's gone. Two two Corinthians, oh two Corinthians, I can't remember it is, where that great writer of Corinthians says this he says, We went into Macedonia and our bodies were tired. Not only was our bodies tired, he said we was harassed. Not only was we harassed, but we was under conflict on the outside and we had fear within.
SPEAKER_01And what does John say? He says perfect love. Cast out all fear. And if we just finish on on this encouraged note, when a fish was designated, it didn't say away, it says a fish was designated for Jonah. To carry him. And when he actually went and he did the Lord's calling, what happened? The most amazing evangelistic moment in the history of the Bible. No stadium. Six hundred thousand people in that one godly town on the world.
SPEAKER_00It's an awful thing to say in it, you can't believe it. But when you when you look at that text, there was no internet, there was no social media. How did they ever get 600?
SPEAKER_01Jesus says, doesn't he? Jesus said, I'll give you no sign, but the sign of Jonah.
SPEAKER_00The pre- you just gotta preach. You just gotta speak the word of God, speak the truth.
SPEAKER_01And here we go, here we have. If you don't know the words, the Holy Spirit will give you the words. Don't worry. You it's a mindset change. Please be encouraged. God is with you, God is for you. Be encouraged, get your mind, get your heart right with the Lord, and we'll go, you know, listen. Mate, radical faith.
SPEAKER_00That's what it comes down to.
SPEAKER_01Radical faith.
Closing Thanks And Encouragement
SPEAKER_00Jumping up above the parapet saying, I'm gonna follow this Jesus.
SPEAKER_01Radical faith, radical obedience, then we'll see miracles.
SPEAKER_00Amen. Amen. Thank you so much for everyone this morning, everyone on on uh online with us this morning. May God bless you and strengthen the name of Jesus.
