In this episode we talk recent News and about the work of Director/Good Person Richard Donner. No time codes today. Life has been hectic. But surprises are fun, RIGHT?!
And welcome and welcome back, everyone, to the Matinee Review, where two friends talk everything entertainment, such as movies, animated features, television shows, video games, cartoons, and comic books. I am Justin. I am Akeele. How are you, man?
SPEAKER_07I'm doing pretty well. Um to put a dose of reality to what we're doing. We're doing this in the morning, so it's uh kind of a different side of the coin for me, but I'm gonna hear me sip my tea. I'm actually pretty excited about this episode after doing a little bit of the research and doing all that. I'm like, oh, we're gonna pay some pretty good talking points here. So I'm feeling good. How are you?
SPEAKER_01I'm good. I'm good. I apologize to anybody that hears a lawnmower in the background. It just seems that everything I'm doing right now, uh, if the lawnmower uh isn't in the background, there'll probably be a jackhammer. Anything possible to make it so that way it's difficult for us to record. Other than that, I'm fine.
SPEAKER_07I'm pretty sure the jackhammer will actually be you just going outside and just beat it.
SPEAKER_01Just just I'll just use a sledgehammer against lawnmower. Like, let me fix this for you. It seems to be choking a little bit. Let me get that. But yes, no, I'm good. I'm good. That's what's up. Yeah. And an okay weekend, it's not 100 and hell degrees here yet. It will be. But uh wow, you're gonna have a hot day. Uh I mean not today, but you know, the rest of the week seems to be in the the the high nineties. Fantastic.
SPEAKER_07Sweet. Then I will not uh brag about how nice the weather will be here.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, well, you know, you don't have to. Yes. Should we dive into it? I I think that uh the news is something that we should give a little bit of.
SPEAKER_06Informs the news. Let's talk about the news. Informs the news. Recently.
SPEAKER_07Have you heard?
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_07Alright. First up, what do we have, Justin?
SPEAKER_01First thing we have at this point, we had some recent news about Michael B. Jordan.
SPEAKER_07Michael B.
SPEAKER_01Jordan. Yes, Michael B. Jordan, not Michael Jordan, not the basketball player. Ladies and gentlemen, we are talking about the actor Michael B. Jordan. Because Looney Tunes got that wrong in the movie. I didn't see it, I just heard the joke, and that's pretty much all I need. I'm good.
SPEAKER_07I saw the little clip of just that part, and they did it they did it really well. It's really funny.
SPEAKER_01Good.
SPEAKER_07Good.
SPEAKER_01Well at least they got the. Okay. Yep. Perfect. Yep. That's all I need to know about it, too. Yep. But yes, Michael B. Jordan is gonna be doing an HBO project that is going to, I guess, most likely, make him Valzad, a uh Superman from I believe Earth 2.
SPEAKER_07Okay.
SPEAKER_01If I'm wrong about that. Oops. But uh yeah, I'm I'm all for it.
SPEAKER_07Not to be confused with Calvin Ellis, who's the Superman of what Earth 23, I believe.
SPEAKER_01Sure. If not, oops.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Superman being portrayed by an African American gentleman. I have a quick note. Did you know? You probably did because you know a lot of things like this. Did you know that there's actually being pinned right now from a writer named Tanahasi Coates, and it's gonna be produced by J.J. Abrams. There is a black Superman script, a Clark Kent, African American Superman script out there. Did you know that?
SPEAKER_01I did, and a lot of people are upset about that. I'm I'm I mean, whatever. Just as long as you get a Superman story right, then then do it. I'm not opposed to him being black. It I it just there's there's no reason why anybody at this point, other than being a racist douchebag, why you should be opposed to somebody being black and you know, a a a favorite my my w my favorite superhero character is Superman. And I I've was raised with the Christopher Reeve movies, I was raised with the comic book character, and to see him become uh somebody other than who he is is not going to shatter my life.
SPEAKER_07Not at all.
SPEAKER_01It's not gonna make me go, I'm never gonna read this comic book again. It's not gonna make all the things that I enjoyed before suddenly burst into flames and disappear, and I can never have access to it again. Uh it is a uh an addition to the Superman lore. Bring it on, and I'm fine with it. But it just seems like they're probably gonna be going with more of Valzad than the uh uh the African American uh Clark Kent.
SPEAKER_07There is a wonderful woman named Jamie Broadnacks who writes, I think her columns called Black Girl Nerd, and she wrote a little essay and kind of you know about black Superman and and race in general. And she had an interesting thing here where she said her sources, when they asked Michael B. Jordan about this, he said he was disinterested in being in the conversation about a black Clark Kent when there's already a Val Zod or a Calvin Ellis that can he can celebrate the characters that are already uh black. Right. And I thought that was a very nice statement uh from him.
SPEAKER_02Yeah.
SPEAKER_07I can definitely understand that. I mean, because you know, we know the we know the world we live in, we know the internet, we know that there's like you said, there's gonna be people out there, what Clark Clark can't can't be black, and it's just like, well, we're talking about fictional characters, why can't they be whatever the fuck they want? Right. You know, in a world where we in a world where we have an alligator Loki where it's just like that's silly, and people are like, huh, that'd be cool. It's like, well, uh, then why can't we just I don't understand your problem with all this? And if you have a problem with it, it says a whole lot more about you than um, you know, about the actual product. So they they also said that they were looking specifically for a uh a black director for this this project because they felt that JJ Abrams would be it might be a little tone deaf when it came to directing. And I'm like, I I understand that. I mean any you know any opportunity to open up a door for uh black filmmakers and things like that is great. So but you know, JJ strikes me as a guy who might he he would he would do his due diligence and treat it with respect if he needed to, but I understand I also understand that statement.
SPEAKER_01So I think at this point with what Ryan Kugler did with Black Panther, yeah, of course you you if if you're gonna be going the either Valzad or Calvin Ellis route, yeah, have a black director. Just but yeah, it it is 100% gonna be tone deaf if like we're just gonna hire a white writer and a white director and a couple of white producers and uh to tell the blacks to tell the black story. Because we know all about that.
SPEAKER_07We're hipping with it. Yeah, you're invited to the cookout, it's cool. Yeah, uh so yeah, Michael B. Jordan adding something else to his already impressive list of credits, and it's good to see that he's still working, still being that guy, looking forward to whatever this is gonna be developing. And as we mentioned before, I did not know that he was directing Creek 3. So I think that's gonna be I'm also excited for for that. So Michael B. Jordan doing big things.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yes. Next up we have Vincent D'Anofrio possibly in Hawkeye. I'm saying possibly because everybody's saying, uh, it's it's you know somewhat confirmed. I'm like, nah. Pictures or it didn't happen. That's my thing. I'll I'll believe it when I see it. But the Kingpin, Vincent D'Anofrio, might be coming to Hawkeye.
SPEAKER_07So apparently this all stemmed from a Reddit from Marvel Studios spoilers. I have it here. It says uh We are excited to reveal that according to our verified sources, Vincent's Kingpin is going to make his MCU re-debut in Hawkeye this year. The source indicated that Daredevil was also supposed to make his MCU redebut in Hawkeye alongside his role in Spider-Man No Way Home, but scheduling for Hawkeye didn't work out. Kingpin will instead be filling that void. And then what also got people up in a huff is that Vincent D'Nafrio himself liked a tweet that rumored his return, but then went and unliked it. So it's so it's uh this story is getting getting a little bit of buzz, and since then it's been a little tight-lipped. But yeah.
SPEAKER_01That's hilarious. Like, I like that. Oh wait, I might be giving this away. No. Then with if he's thumbs-upping things and then suddenly taking it down, that doesn't sound like he's denying anything. No that's for sure.
SPEAKER_07I mean, yeah, I would think that he liked it, and maybe somebody gave him a call like, hey Vincent, you want to not do that, please? We're not telling you what to do, but don't do that. Right. Remember this whole contract you signed? Right. I would be thrilled if Vincent D'Nofrio returned no offense to Michael Clark Duncan, but Vincent D'Anofrio is my kingpin.
SPEAKER_01So he just he killed it. And and many a people too, especially that one guy with the car door. He became the most menacing mob boss that you could think of in that cinematic universe. So uh the fact that they might actually finally be connecting these, you know, the Netflix Marvel and the MCU Marvel, do it.
SPEAKER_07I agree.
SPEAKER_01Maybe do a little more choreography with uh Iron Fist.
SPEAKER_07Or just or just find a different Iron Fist. Who knows? Like exactly from I I did not see Iron Fist, and I'll admit I only watched a little bit of Defenders from what everything I hear. The gentleman who was in Game of Thrones uh played Iron Fist was not probably not the best pick. And just the show in general, off bat, people were like, nah, no.
SPEAKER_01I don't know, man. If you're really into boardroom scenes, then Iron Fist is for you.
SPEAKER_07That's what you think of when you think of Iron Fist.
SPEAKER_01That's what I thought of. I thought, man, this this guy really needs to sit down in a chair and talk about how to keep the company afloat.
SPEAKER_07And now when you see now, when you say board meetings, you mean like he's in a room and he's breaking boards and people meet and and while he does it, like no, like literally like he's running the rant, he's he's Danny Rand running a company and it's board meetings.
SPEAKER_02Ah so boring.
SPEAKER_07Cool.
SPEAKER_01And it's and it's very interesting that some of the best fight scenes it just happened to be when he had a mask on.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. Wow. Love that stunt, man. Yeah. Love that stuntman. Go. I would all I would love for Charlie Cox to show up. Uh Charlie Cox is uh no offense to Ben Affleck, but Charlie Cox is my Daredevil. So I uh would love to see Charlie Cox reprise his role in the MCU as Daredevil, because Char that that Daredevil show was fantastic. Absolutely. I enjoyed every single bit of that show.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_07So yeah. That would be that would be great news if that comes to fruition.
SPEAKER_01If it is true, I I cannot wait. But we will see.
SPEAKER_07We will see.
SPEAKER_01In other Marvel possibilities, Norman Redis is talking about how he wants to be Ghost Rider.
SPEAKER_08Mm-hmm.
SPEAKER_01Now, Norman Redis, if nobody knows. If you nobody knows Norman Reedus by now, you're under a rock. But Shame on you. He is uh right now very well known for his character in Walking Dead.
SPEAKER_07Good old Daryl, the man with the crossbow. That's right.
SPEAKER_01He's been in a lot of other things. He was also in Blade 2 as the stoner mechanic.
SPEAKER_07He was good old Scud.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, who be who betrayed fucking Blade, so fuck Scud.
SPEAKER_01With a name like Scud, you know, there's not much trust coming in.
SPEAKER_07All the help, all the help in the world you can hire. Scud was your guy. Whistler's a cool nickname. Blade. Maybe got Scud. Like, what? What's going on here? Who'd you who'd you fuck to get on this ship? Yeah. But even before that, Norman Reedus will always be Murphy McManus, good old boondock saint. Oh, yeah. So I guess Norman Reedus is already an avid motorcycle guy. He has his own show, uh Ride with Norman Reedus on AMC. He's talking about living under a rock. Because I gave up on The Walking Dead s seasons ago. Um I'm one of those people I'm like, wait, they're still doing that? Because I figured after a certain point, it's like, we have to shut this down. I mean, they they don't even do the comic book anymore. And if you haven't read the comic book, do y'all selves a favor. The comic book is fantastic and goes in a different little trajectories than the show. I mean, they keep a lot of main points, but there's just some other things going on with characters that uh in the walk in the Walking Dead comic book that's like, man, I wish they would have just kept this for the show.
SPEAKER_01Right.
SPEAKER_07So I I did not know he had his own show. But I would say, why not? Absolutely. If the dude wants to do it, you don't have to teach him to ride a motorcycle. He's already super well known, and yeah, why not?
SPEAKER_01Yeah, he he said, you know, the ghost rider conversation has been coming up for years, and yeah, tell them I want in, put me in it.
SPEAKER_07Unless they're waiting to see how this whole pig movie turns out, and it's like, okay, well, uh, let's see if Nick can throw the leather on again and be ghost rider. Unless they're doing that whole thing, then I say, why not?
SPEAKER_01I I think Nor Norman Reese would be perfect. I think he'd be perfect. He he even said, I got twelve motorcycles, just pick one, I'll do it. There you go.
SPEAKER_07There you go, which he won't need to. They will they will they will build him a custom one. And the good thing is that they they they should build him a custom one and he should be involved in it. Right. They can set it up for him, and if he's like, Oh, this is what you're gonna be riding during the movie, you might as well let him pick it out to his specifications so they don't even have to worry about this, that, and the third.
SPEAKER_01So the only person that I can think that might be competing with him for the role would be Keanu Reeves.
SPEAKER_08Hmm.
SPEAKER_01Because I think Keanu's stoic, you know, very hard ass attitude that he's developed when it comes to doing stuff like The Matrix and then moving on to you know, John Wick and everything, he's just got that look of I don't have to really try to intimidate you, I'll just snap your fucking neck, just no problem. So I'm just gonna remain this look here. So that's funny.
SPEAKER_07Because he's one of the nicest dudes on the planet. So right. Hey, if Keanu Reeves isn't busy doing John Wick 18, I say, sure, go for it.
SPEAKER_01Busy? He would do both. You know, that guy just doesn't stop if he doesn't have to.
SPEAKER_07Uh Norman Reedis, I has my has my two thumbs up. I mean, who am I? But I say give it to Norman Reedus. He has my vote. Damn right. For sure.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Let's see, let's see, let's see, let's see. We were talking about Black Widow for our first episode.
SPEAKER_07And yeah, remember remember that y'all? Episode one?
SPEAKER_02So long ago. Remember then when we used to used to talk about who are you?
SPEAKER_01But Black Widow will be dropping on digital August 10th, and it will be on 4K and Blu-ray and DVD September 14th.
SPEAKER_07Mm-hmm. With nine deleted scenes and a blooper reel. Yes. I'm not gonna be one of those people that are gonna just break down all the actual deleted scenes, but one thing I did read that I was excited for is there's a nice little thing that shows how Florence Pugh and Scarlett Johansson, you know, fought together, trained together, and did this whole thing to try to get their sister bond going. So I'm really interested to see, you know, though those little tidbits and whatnot. So for you and I, cats like us, who are hard copy people who want to uh, you know, buy something and put it on a shelf and add it to our collection, super excited about this.
SPEAKER_01I am too. So far, no word on what any type of you know special edition cases or anything like that might be coming, but that that should probably drop probably within the next couple of days, I would think, because Best Buy, they just want to get those pre-orders in, and I also want to pre-order it. So can you guys hurry up? I want to know what it is. I need it, thank you.
SPEAKER_07I think it's worth noting too that Black Widow has made over sixty million dollars on Disney Plus.
SPEAKER_01Nice.
SPEAKER_07So for people who were just like, yeah, I'm just gonna drop this 30 and watch whatever, Disney looked at the bank account and went, hey, we're alright. Thank you. COVID is not stopping us, apparently. Yeah. Very good. Can I add in a little small note on that? Something we just found out. Apparently, Deek and Frost, not so frosty. Remember episode one? Mr. Stephen Dorf had a couple things to say about being embarrassed for Scarlet and how Black Widow is a video game movie, and this, that, and the third. Turns out Stephen Dorf was caught in a shit-talking period by the journalist, and sometimes happened, and he thinks his words were taken out of context. In fact, he is a friend of Scarlet. He wishes her well because he knows that she's a mother, so he wishes her all the best, and he said that he would love to come back and do another version of Deacon Frost in the MCU. He didn't say that. He did say that.
SPEAKER_01I didn't read that part. I read all about the whole, you know, all right that you caught me at a bad time. It sometimes happens. I did not read that he was like, oh, and I'm uh uh uh please bring me back. I'm sorry. No.
SPEAKER_00Yeah, man. In case you guys are interested, not you know, not doing anything. I'm uh, you know, I'm around.
SPEAKER_07I imagine there's an agent somewhere that called him and said, Hey Steven, so yo, shut the fuck up. Here's the thing, bruh. I'm actually trying to you know they're making a new blade, right? And we're trying to get you some some some some money here. Don't you want to make five to seven million dollars?
SPEAKER_01I don't know if you've been paying attention, but there's this whole multiverse thing happening, and they're just bringing in all types of people from before. So you might want to shut the fuck up.
SPEAKER_07I'm also reading the thing where he's just like, yeah, he wished Marashala Lee the best with the Blade remake because the redoing Blade and Marishala Lee, we did true detective together, and he's an amazing actor. So I wish him the best with that. I'm telling you, man, he might have fucked up an opportunity. He'd already worked with the dude. Uh that sounds like that sounds like an agent or something was like, yo, Steven, what the fuck, bro? Yeah, a little bit of an oops. Yeah. So Deacon Frost, not so frosty. Maybe we'll reel back in the Stephen Dorff fans by saying, like, you know, hey, next time Steven just maybe just say looks good. And he admitted it he hadn't seen the movie. No, I haven't seen the movie yet. It's like, huh, okay, but okay, bro.
SPEAKER_01Steven Dorf fans should not have any problems with us for commenting on his comments. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07If anything, if anything, Stephen Dorff fans should be mad at Steven Dorf. Yeah, thing. We didn't say it. We're just recording that. But I I just thought to throw that in because that was just some some new hot news. Because we talk about Black Widow, and that's something we I something I literally saw like late last night, earlier this morning when I was doing the research, and I was like, huh, well look at that.
SPEAKER_02So all right. Moving on. Moving.
SPEAKER_07Move, move, move, moving. How about fuck? It's Peacemaker.
SPEAKER_01Yes, and he's getting an air date, which I thought I had saved, and now I'm looking around, going, where did I put it?
SPEAKER_07January 2022.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Gonna be uh on HBO Max.
SPEAKER_07The wonderful and very funny. John Cena is uh going to be reprising his role as Peacemaker. It looks like James Gunn is going to be not only did he create this, but I guess of the eight show run, he's going to direct five of the episodes.
SPEAKER_01So he he looks A like he's having fun to the point where he I mean he's been wearing the outfit for interviews. He wore it on Jimmy Kimmel the other night. Of course. Of course he did. And and obviously he obviously it's good enough that the studio went we need a show about this guy. Because this is gonna be something big. And he's hilarious. If he's proved anything that the guy is funny as hell, and and he's got great timing. So I'm I'm all for it. I can't wait to see it. Can't wait to see the movie. That's next week. Uh Suicide Squad? Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, man.
SPEAKER_01I believe that's next week.
SPEAKER_07We're getting ready.
SPEAKER_01We're getting ready. All right. Drop today, ladies and gentlemen. We have got our good first look at the Ghostbusters. And I can't wait.
SPEAKER_07Okay. So yeah. Um the first trailer dropped December 9th, 2019. And it's it has since has over 19 million views on YouTube. And that first trailer really just really just wet the beak. Really just gave you that first little taste. And it was just like, okay, Paul Rudd, okay. You got a cat from Stranger Things whipping the Ecto 1 all around the the the the corn the the wheat the wheat field. But this this trailer here, yeah, man, a nice, full, just good trailer. And I think this movie, if I can say anything else about it, just looks very fun. Yeah, it looks like a fun for fun for for kids and adults of of all ages.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, it it looks like a a fun continuation as well as a a tribute at the same time. And I I'm all for that. Especially the final scene. Or at least that that final, I would say, maybe 30 seconds of the trailer when you start hearing that old commercial, and then when they they end it off with the phone number on the screen, and then the phone call, the red phone picking it up for clothes.
SPEAKER_07It's just I I'm I got juiced, I got a little goosebumps, little little goosebumpy. I was just like, ooh, that's that's it, yeah. That was and and I knew because I saw the it's like Ghostbusters afterlife, and I'm like, okay, what's gonna what's gonna be y'all tagline? Because you I know you're gonna end this trailer with something that people are gonna go, pff Fuck yeah, and that yeah, that did it for me.
SPEAKER_01I I liked how uh Finn Wolfard was obviously in one of the mechanic jumpsuits, and he is sprawled out across the the engine the exact same way that Dan Aykroyd was in the first movie when Sigourney Weaver comes walking in and he just kind of just turns his head around and looks and he got the cigarette hanging out of his mouth like he did for pretty much ninety percent of that movie. But he it's the the exact Same way. So right when I saw that, I went, Oh, that's the first movie. I'm I'm all I'm already, you know, right just from that shot, first movie vibes. So he he's if he's gonna do more of those things, it's definitely gonna pull people in just for that quick throwback, that quick moment of just like being taken back to watching the first movie. And yeah, those are the things that you need for a continuation, something that'll quickly take you back into that moment.
SPEAKER_07They're gonna press that nostalgia button a lot, and and you're not upset about it. Um, because I think they're gonna do it in a in a way where it's just like, hey, y'all, remember this? I think it's gonna be a little more subtle, you know, a little subtle ways. And I think that Jason Reitman's gonna do a fantastic job. I think that this movie is gonna propel. I mean, you know, everybody already knows who Finn Wolfheart is, but I think for the people that don't know who the other kids are, I think that's gonna propel them into that next echelon of like, oh, pay attention to these cats. And then Paul Rudd's just gonna be Paul Rudd, the the ageless wonder, and we're gonna get to see some nice cameos. I mean, we already saw Annie Potts showed up in uh, you know, the the little thing. If your father, your father, you couldn't even keep the lights on, you know, and if those, you know, she worked with worked with it all Egon, and you know, so she knows.
SPEAKER_01It's it's you know, this is I'm I'm wondering if if if she if she ended up hooking up with Egon. Ghostbusters one, they they were really hinting that she had a huge crush on big brain. So I'm I'm just wondering if they ended up ended up like maybe hooking up, and maybe that's actually her mother saying that, you know, yo, your father couldn't keep the lights on, you know. It wasn't just like her friend saying, you know, talking about her father. It sounded, you know, to me more like she was talking to her daughter. Um could be. I don't know. That could be.
SPEAKER_07Every time I hear that kid's name, I'm like, there's some amateur dude going to motherfuck, why I'd have to cross that one off the list.
SPEAKER_01If that's not a sag name, then you know it's a name I've never heard uh ever until now. You know, you hear Johnson and all those other, you know, the obvious ones.
SPEAKER_07The obvious ones.
SPEAKER_01Yes, but it didn't. Wolf Hard. No, I just it's never it's never really popped up. So I'm wondering if that was a sag name that he just kind of went, um uh saw a picture of a wolf. You know, saw a picture of a brick, and just went, uh uh, uh, uh, Wolf Hard. Boom. That'll work. First name? Finn. Done. Finished, done.
SPEAKER_00Saw a shark, you know, saw a shark, and just like uh uh just watching Jaws. There's a Finn in the water.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, uh Finn, Wolf Hard. What do you think? It just takes me back to a fish called Ray Stan. My name is Man, Fred Jen Jensen. And then she pronounces it perfectly right after. Love that movie. Sorry, go ahead.
SPEAKER_07I was just gonna, what do you think Ray Stance has been doing this whole time?
SPEAKER_01He's been running his shop. Hmm people have Do you think he has his gear from just tucked in the back? He's gotta have other things that he was either making or they were making on the in-between, just not at the bar. I don't know. If Spangler had the house and he's just been living out there in the middle of nowhere, obviously something happened to the point where they all broke up and and went their separate ways.
SPEAKER_07Well it would have to be him dying, no? Maybe that's what Or do you think the city just kind of ran them out? It's like, well, we don't really need y'all anymore. Y'all took care of everything.
SPEAKER_01Well, I mean, look how they treated him like, you know, after the first one.
SPEAKER_00It's like, thanks for your help, and then all of a sudden it's like, yeah, throw these guys in jail and wait a minute, you did what?
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah, no, it it so you know, who knows?
SPEAKER_00Maybe they're all like, I hey, thanks for bringing the Statue of Liberty in here, can you move that freaking thing?
SPEAKER_01But I don't know what would make it so that way they're they're all broken up. Maybe it could have been Spangler's death. But what would have made it so that way he went and just picked that house in the middle of nowhere? You know, maybe he was reading all that maybe possible activity, spectral activity.
SPEAKER_07I think it's a thing he knew that was going to happen. I mean, maybe it was a thing where it's like, so when we capture these ghosts and when we send them somewhere, they they have to go somewhere, and they all maybe just collectively went to this random place, and Egon knew about it and was like, okay, well, let me set up this base and make sure that when this thing pops off, and it will, that they will at least be at the main point and they can hopefully do something about it. So do you think they try to touch any kind of Egon coming back as a spirit? Do you think they touch that at all? Or you think they just leave that uh leave that alone?
SPEAKER_01I mean, there's right ways of doing it, and then there's definitely wrong ways of doing it. If you're gonna do a a full-on talking Egon ghost, I think that would be a little bit disrespectful if you were to do a quick shot of maybe just kind of him kind of looking at the team. You know, just I don't know, maybe just using already used footage that they, you know, was a behind the scenes or a cutout shot where you can put that in or something. I just I just say leave it alone. I say, you know, keep him gone and maybe have a reference, you know, we got all these guys, why can't we just see him one more time? That type of thing. You know, and then that's kind of a a little life lesson. Facts.
SPEAKER_07Do you think Yanos comes back?
SPEAKER_06From the from from the upper from the upper vest side? Yes, but why are you came? No, no, please! Pictures available in the gift shop.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, just the one of the best created characters in in cinematic history.
SPEAKER_06Oh, but I would.
SPEAKER_00But I would, yes. Uh you know, you you alright? Yeah. Do you want me to come in? Yeah, no. No.
SPEAKER_02Alright, you know.
SPEAKER_01I was just looking around. But I digress. Uh, if they bring him back just for a quick second, please. He's still just running the museum. Yeah, I don't know. Having them all come back is hopefully what they have done.
SPEAKER_07Way excited for this than I was for the hey all, we we redid Ghostbusters, but it's all ladies, and no offense to the ladies, but I was just like, mm, just in general, like, mm.
SPEAKER_01It just it didn't land. I just didn't land. It just and also having Bill Murray come back as a completely different character. That's I sat there and just went, well, this just it yeah, this is a complete and utter parody. Yeah, it's a cartoon.
SPEAKER_07It's a it's a two-hour Saturday night live skit.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yeah, exactly. And I just at that point I went, Oh, okay. Well, it almost feels bad that it's next to the other Ghostbusters movies, but it still says Ghostbusters, so put it there.
SPEAKER_07Put it there.
SPEAKER_01But yeah, Ghostbusters everybody's gonna be in theaters, supposedly only in theaters, because it's Sony. Uh, Thanksgiving.
SPEAKER_07Cool, man.
SPEAKER_01Was that the news? I believe that is the other one.
SPEAKER_07Or do you have like a or you're gonna like pull a rabbit out of the hat and be like, well, hey Kills, I saved this for you. Boom. Yep, Spider-Man trailer.
SPEAKER_01Boom, here it is. Motherfuck! Cool.
SPEAKER_06Well, that was the news, the news. Thanks for listening to the news.
SPEAKER_01Brought to you by the helicopter that just flew over my house. Good God. Fly any lower?
SPEAKER_02Slow down, you damn whippersnappers.
SPEAKER_07All right. Should we get into the meat and potatoes of the show today, my friends?
SPEAKER_01Yes, we are, and yes, we should, and yes we will. That's what's up. Uh, we're gonna be talking about Richard Donner, folks, the great and uh and terrific and wonderful uh director that we have uh all experienced of plenty of his movies. Uh some of you might not even know that he directed some of those things.
SPEAKER_07I can't wait till we get to that portion, because uh I got my mind blown doing research for this thing. Like, really? I've been a Richard Donner fan all along.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_08Yeah.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. Let's uh start off with his TV career. Yeah from the The Man from Uncle, The Fugitive, The Twilight Zone. He worked with Steve McQueen on the Wanted, Dead or Alive Western TV show. He did so much. He he did the episode in the Twilight Zone with William Shatner. Uh there's something on the w there's something wing.
SPEAKER_05Some thing.
SPEAKER_01On the wing. Something on the wing. He did that whole episode. Wonderful.
SPEAKER_07And like I said, been Richard Donner fan all along. Look at that.
SPEAKER_01And they did that whole thing in three days, which was i impressive back then. They went into this main studio in MGM, they started filming, they had the plane and everything in there, and they had about probably about two days worth of of shooting left, maybe a day and a half. And studio execs come in and say, Okay, so we need this entire studio for tomorrow. So you guys need to to finish. And he's like, We are we can't. We need this tomorrow. So they had to film all the way until sun up filming all that stuff. And that probably contributed some of his deliriousness. I need a nap. That's funny. So yeah. Nice. Yeah. Um guy had had quite the career.
SPEAKER_07Go ahead. Yeah, no, I'm sorry. I didn't mean to step on your toe there. No, no, no, no, no, no. I see uh um I just put down a couple things that I pulled from the the whole TV thing. Uh he did a couple episodes of Kojak. I thought was cool. Did a couple episodes of the fugitive, three episodes, and was executive producer on Tales from the Crypt, which would translate really well into the movies for him. Yes. And you mentioned the man from Uncle. Uh so some people, you know, probably didn't know that yeah, that was a TV show because a lot of people know the Man from Uncle, the guy Richie movie starring Henry Cavill. So I because I Army Hammer. Oh my hammer, is Henry Cavill not in that movie?
SPEAKER_01No, it's they're both in it.
SPEAKER_07Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01Henry Cavill and Army Hammer.
SPEAKER_07Oh, okay.
SPEAKER_01Okay, yeah.
SPEAKER_07Hugh Grant shows up in there. Yep. Um, but yeah, I I when I know when I I didn't know that that was a show. And then when I was doing research, I was like, oh, Richard Donna worked on that one. So look at that. And then he also worked on Have Gun Will Travel for five episodes. There it is. And the reason why that popped up on my radar, uh I was like, oh, I recognize that the name of that show because did you know that in 2000 Stand by me? Did you know that in 2006, Eminem was supposed to star in a Paramount developed Have Gun Will Travel movie? I didn't know. This was after he this was af this was after Eight Mile, and somebody said, Oh, looks like Marshall Mathers has some acting chops, and they were gonna develop uh Have Gun Will Travel for him to star in.
SPEAKER_01I didn't know that.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, I did not know that. Yeah, man. We almost had we almost we almost had that.
SPEAKER_01So that's crazy. I just remember uh Corey Feldman singing that song, and pretty much all the kids singing that song in Stand By Me. Is that where that's and Will Travel reached the card of a man?
SPEAKER_00Okay in a savage land.
SPEAKER_07How about that? Yeah. How about that? Okay, cool.
SPEAKER_01He also did some episodes of Wild Wild West. He did some episodes of Gilligan's Island, Kojak. He he did a lot. The guy did a lot before he went on.
SPEAKER_07That's what's up, man.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Yeah. Cool. And then uh and his first film was X-15. I have no idea what that's about. Something that I would like to look into, because that's another movie I just didn't know that he did, nor that existed.
SPEAKER_07It's uh fictionalized account on the X-15 Research Rocket Aircraft Program. The test pilots who flew the aircraft and the associated NASA community that supported the program. Ah. Perfect. Starring David McLean and Charles Bronson, actually. So yeah. Narrated by a good old Jimmy Stewart. Yeah, James Stewart. Ah. Yeah, who's uncredited, but yeah, that's it's I'm pretty sure I haven't seen the movie, but I'm pretty sure if you listen to it, you might get that voice. Wow.
SPEAKER_06Savings alone.
SPEAKER_01Alright. Then in 1968 he did uh Salt and Pepper, a movie with Sammy Davis Jr. 69 he did a movie called Lola. He got kind of well known for the movie The Omen in 1976. And then it all blew up in 1978 was Superman the movie. And that just shot him into stardom. Now it's funny that you say that because he even when he talks about when he did the went to the premiere and you know the whole credits start, and you got the names coming up on screen. The moment that the title came on, he could even hear it through the music that he's like, I could totally hear it. It said Superman.
SPEAKER_06Yeah. It's a great it's a great landing spot for here. He comes from the sky. What could it be about Superman? You know, that's it's it's it's right.
SPEAKER_01Well you just wrote the song. Perfect.
SPEAKER_06Nice.
SPEAKER_01I didn't know it had lyrics, but now it does. So bravo. Yeah. Love that movie. Absolutely love that movie. It is the I think the epitome of origin story movies. It it had just a fantastic cast. A lot of people knock Gene Hackman's Lex Luthor. I think it was fabulous. I think that it it it brought just a whole new realm of psychoticness and and sarcasm all at the same time. He killed it. I I loved it. I loved God everything about it. I'm I'm stumbling just because I'm trying to think of everything all at the same time.
SPEAKER_07Sure. I mean, it's I know it's uh it's I know you go very uh, and I don't mean this in a a knocky way, but I know you go very fanboy for the movie. Absolutely. There's been countless times. I mean, that I can probably in every single conversation that we've had that gave us kind of the idea for this podcast. We there's there's going to I already know there's going to be a moment where Superman's going to come up. And that's fine because it I love to hear you talk about Superman because I wasn't a big Superman guy, really. Um the mo I when I remember first watching the movie, of course, like most things, I'm pretty sure my mother showed it to me. You know, and just one of those things where she didn't show it to me, I was just like, oh, Superman, I know this and decide to just put it on, put it, you know, watch it on my own. And if anything, just I remember finishing the movie and just going, you know, that Superman, just he's a good egg. He's a really good guy. Like just there for all of us. And you know, you know, just and and hey, if if if your local pimp on the street can dig Superman, hey, that's a bad outfit.
SPEAKER_06Whoo, you know, hey.
SPEAKER_07Right. Love that. Love that. Who am I who am I to knock Superman? You know, it is a bad outfit, you know?
SPEAKER_01Anything I I'm sure my first experience with Superman was Superman the movie on VHS. My mom's friend, who I call my aunt, would make copies from Laserdisc to VHS. So I just always remembered the black videotape cassette with the just the the white strip of the handwritten Superman on it. Nice. And I don't remember seeing it in the theater, but my mom told me that my first movie theater experience was with Superman 4, the quest for peace. And I just Christopher Reeve has always been just that the perfect Superman. I I it it's hard to top that. Henry Cavill looks great. Henry Cavill, I'm sure, can do a fantastic job with a good enough script. And I don't I'm not really knocking too much of Man of Steel and and Bad MV Superman.
SPEAKER_07I thought Brandon Routh actually looked the closest to the Chris Reeve Superman that we would get. Like I I you know, everybody shits on Superman Returns, as maybe a few people should, but I think just if you're talking about the look, I was like, oh, they picked they picked a decent looking dude. Like I get it. This does remind me of the Chris Reeve, you know, Superman. So yeah.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. You know, it was as far as doing a tribute to, you know, a love letter to the original Richard Donner and Chris Reeve Superman. And it worked in that aspect, but it just didn't have what we needed at at this point, and it was to see Superman punch somebody in the fucking face. Um and it just there was some other things in it that would it just didn't land right. But it was still I I I enjoy that movie. I just it's Superman, there's nothing going to top Christopher Reeves Superman. Speaking of it. And like I said, you know, if I if you know, if they don't make another Superman movie or they do make another Superman movie and it's not good enough, it's not gonna make the other movies disappear. They still exist. So if you know, for anybody who doesn't like something that's new or remade, don't worry. You can still watch the original shit or still read the original stuff. Just calm down a little. It's gonna be all right.
SPEAKER_07In doing my research for the calm down, it's gonna be alright. Calm down and sold.
unknownRight.
SPEAKER_07You're such a calming voice in these uh in these troubled times, Jay. Try to be. You make me feel good. In doing some of my research for this, a couple things struck out at me. We talked about Christopher Reeve. The casting of Superman, or trying to find the person to be Superman, the list is incredible. Let me just read you some people. Oh, yeah. Robert Redford was offered a large sum, but he felt he was too famous. Burt Reynolds turned down the role. Sylvester Stallone was interested, but nothing came of it. Paul Newman was offered the choice of roles, as Superman, Lex Luther, or Jorel, he turned down all three. Bruce Jenner auditioned for the role. Patrick Wayne was cast but dropped when his father, John Wayne, was diagnosed with stomach cancer. Both Neil Diamond and Arnold Schwarzenegger lobbied hard for the role but were ignored. James Kahn, James Brolin, Lyle Wagner, Christopher Walken, Nick Nolte, John Voigt, and Perry King were approached. Chris Christofferson and Charles Bronson were also considered for the role. Warren Beatty was offered the role but turned it down.
SPEAKER_01You left out a gem. Did I? Yeah.
SPEAKER_07You would know.
SPEAKER_01Dustin Hoffman.
SPEAKER_07Oh boy, look at that.
SPEAKER_01Can you imagine a Dustin Hoffman Superman?
SPEAKER_07I mean, you can go back. Can you imagine a Christopher Walken Superman?
SPEAKER_01I can imagine a Christopher Walken Superman over Dustin Hoffman Superman. Christopher Walken back in the day, you know, no offense to Dustin Hoffman, but just didn't sound like Dustin Hoffman. I just I I mean Dustin Hoffman, Captain Hook. Yeah, get it. Oh man. I can hear it. It's perfect.
SPEAKER_07That voice Captain Hook ever. I will fight you. I'll fight anybody. Best Captain Hook ever, Dustin Hoffman.
SPEAKER_01But you know what I mean? Like when when Dustin Hoffman starts to yell.
SPEAKER_03And he kind of goes off into this. You know, I've been there, you know what I'm we gotta make sure he's just that huge.
SPEAKER_01Is that really high-pitched panic? Yes. Nah, nah, that's not Superman, sorry. And not to mention the guy's probably like five foot two. So let's let's really think about what Superman is. And uh yeah, no. Not only that, but one of the uh the the producer's wife's dentist was offered an audition. They even have it on film. Oh boy. Yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_07Oh boy. And then a couple a couple other things I saw where I was like, huh, I did not know this. Dustin Hoffenprievers could he also turned down Lex Luther, apparently.
SPEAKER_01Oh yeah. See, I could see that.
SPEAKER_07Yeah. But um and this is just really funny. Just kind of g maybe gives you to an insight of who he was. Marlon Brando, he horrified the Salkins because by proposing in their first meeting that Jorel appear as a green suitcase or a bagel with Brandon's voice. But Donner used flattery to persuade the actor to portray Jorel himself.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Uh Francis Ford Coppola. A green suitcase or a bagel, Justin? Right. When I first heard that, I went, well, there's something wrong with that man. But Francis Ford Coppola had warned Richard Donner. He said, like, look, he's gonna challenge you. He's going to see how you know how thick skinned you are when it comes to certain things that he'll say or ideas that he'll give. And and boy did he, when it comes to maybe, you know maybe he should be a bagel. And it just Can you imagine sitting there and just having like everybody's just like, you know, really into like, oh, right, we're gonna get we're gonna get the Godfather, we're gonna get Marlon Brando to to be Jarel. This is gonna be great. And he's like, you know, maybe I should be a bagel, like just do the voice. And everybody's going, wait a minute, what? No, no, wait, where am I? What happened? What did I drink? I wish I could have been a fly on the wall for that.
SPEAKER_07Man. I think the I think even the fly himself would have left the room.
SPEAKER_01Fly's like, no, I'm out of here. But it just it it also kind of just revealed how much he was gonna give a shit about the film because through a couple of different stories. I mean, there was an interview with Christopher Reeve when he was talking about how just the the man didn't care. Just y the man didn't care. He didn't he didn't, you know, he just didn't have the right attitude for it and everything, and the guy goes. The guy goes, Well, it was actually it was still an honor to to work with him, or what though, right? He's like, No, no, it wasn't. No, it wasn't. I was like, Wow, bold.
SPEAKER_07Let him know. Let him know. Right. Let him know. I mean, clearly all about the money. Um, right. And now that you say that, you know, you can kind of go back and it's like, yeah, you know, those that you know, it's Marlon Brando, it's that voice, it's that cadence, it's the walk, but that's definitely like, all right, cut. Hey, uh, Marlon, can we do another take? No. No. Right. All right. We we got it then. Thanks thanks, Marlon. Yeah. Like what were you gonna say about Terrence Stamp or Zod? Yeah, Zod. I love General Zod. Too good. Too good. Terrence Stamp is the guy. He's the guy.
SPEAKER_01You want to you want a good Terrence Stamp movie? Uh see the Limey.
SPEAKER_07Okay. I'll write it down.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, that's a good one.
SPEAKER_07Uh God Zod. Zod. Yes. I win. I always win.
SPEAKER_01He uh it was the day of filming, the the big big opening scene that you see in Superman the movie. Where Zod and his his two uh minions are are being put on trial for their their crimes against Krypton. And it's Krypton. Krypton the planet Krypton. Krypton. Yes, the planet Krypton. Nobody told him.
SPEAKER_07That's that's good. That's a good Brando.
SPEAKER_01Thank you. I try. So the the the day of filming that shot, I guess either Terrence Stapp walks in or Martlin Brando walks in. Terrence Stapp's the one who told this story, and he said that Martin Brando asks uh tell me uh what do you what do you think of the script? And Terrence Stamp's oh I love it, I love it. I I I I just it's really it's really it's really great. Well what about you? What do you think? And he goes, I don't know, I I haven't read it yet. Day one day one day one, and I was watching the beginning of it this morning, and the part where Zod Terrence Stamp is is yelling at Marlon Brando as he's walking away. It's like, you will bow down before me. And I'm thinking the entire time that he's just thinking in his head, you motherfucker, you haven't even read the script if you're getting paid like two million dollars. Like all of that right there was that morning's conversation. Like you haven't read the script yet. All the motivation you needed. Yeah, right there. There it is. You are getting paid all the this, and I what? Yeah, mother's the guy probably like would re was rehearsing that like nobody's business, just read it every day, took it to the toilet, took it to the shower, took it in the card, everything that he had, he just took that script with him and he just kept it there and he kept rehearsing. And Marlon Brando shows up day one, makeup and everything. Well, I haven't even read the script yet. And you're just like, what what do you what's going on here?
SPEAKER_07Like, how how and it's like, yo, bro, like he's not even the main baddie of that movie. And it's just like, what do you mean you haven't read the script? What are we what are we talking about? Right? Like, oh my lord. That's right. Well, again, it just Marlon Brando was that was that guy, I guess. He was that guy. Because I I also see he turned around and sued the Sulkins because he also felt like he didn't get enough or wasn't pivotal, and that's why we're like, okay, when we make this second one, then we're just gonna use these random clips you already have. We don't need you, Marlon. Thank you. Something like that.
SPEAKER_01Once they fired because they Richard Donner was filming one and two back to back. There was uh some controversy between the Solkines and Richard Donner. So he kept that as quiet as possible from the cast, and they were getting to the point where they absolutely ran out of money. It just went over budget, they completely ran out of money, they couldn't continue filming. So they said, okay, let's let's put out Superman one and see how it does. And it was a hit. It absolutely blew up. And then they fired Richard Donner. They brought in Richard Lester, who was also the director of Superman 3, and Richard Lester ended up going back and you know reshooting more than I I would say half the movie. And at that point when they they fired him, they said, okay, we'll just still use all these most of the existing stuff, and then Marlon Brando said, No, you can't use mine. You can't use my stuff. And that's where I believe he sued them. So then they just used the actress that played his mother for those shots and re-filmed all that stuff. Even Gene Hackman didn't return for the reshoots. So a lot of the stuff that you see with Gene Hackman is either far away or or from behind. So all the stuff that you see that you know that's actually his face is all Richard Donner's stuff, and then the other stuff is just a stand-in wearing the outfit and wearing a wig. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Cool. Superman the movie. Superman the movie. Cool.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, and that that that blew him up into stardom, and he did did other things after that. Let's take a look at what we got here.
SPEAKER_07He did a little fun movie that I feel like if you're around our age, it's definitely a movie that you know people's like, Well, you gotta talk about this. Of course, we're talking about the Goonies.
SPEAKER_01Absolutely. Goonies never say die.
SPEAKER_07I just watched a little interview that Josh Brolin gave about how you know he's like, okay, so this is what's gonna happen. He's like, We heard there was gonna be this ship, right? And we they've been building it for three months, and we didn't get, they wouldn't let us see the ship, and oh, finally it's built. They're gonna let us see it. And so they're like, All right, we have speakers underwater, you're gonna go down the water slide. Now, when you go down, it wants you to face the wall. And then when we say action, you know, turn around, and all you're gonna do is turn around. And so he's like, So we're going down the water, so action. So I turn around, and the first thing I go is, holy shit! And Richie's Richard Turner says, Cut, well, you're a Goonie, you can't say that.
SPEAKER_01That's funny, that's hilarious.
SPEAKER_07So so the reactions that you see from the kids when they see the ship are the genuine, that was all their first time seeing that. Yeah, yeah. So I th I thought that was a really great story. Um, yeah, the Goonies. Um, that was Josh Brolin's first film, and there's a lot of cats in there that would either turn into stars or were kind of stars at the time, and or or you know, their stars would just continue to shine bright. I've only seen that movie a handful of times, but I do remember just it uh uh I'm gonna say this about a lot of movies, but it's true. It's just a very fun film. It's just beginning to end. You're like, this is really cool. Oh yeah.
unknownYeah.
SPEAKER_01Uh it has uh Sean Aston, it has Corey Feldman, it has uh Joe Pant uh Pantolone. Pantoliono. No, I can't jump. It's uh pants. Joe Pants. You'll remember from other movies.
SPEAKER_07Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Jeff Cohen, Carrie Green, Martha Plimpton, and Kay Hoi Kwan, who's uh who's a short round, so yes, and we have 100% have to, because at least I have to mention Anne Ramsay because she's great in this, she's always been great in in Goonies. But if you haven't seen a little movie called Throw Mama from the Train, you 100% have to see her in that. Yeah. Because she plays the most awful person to ever exist.
SPEAKER_04Owen! Give me some nuts. Don't give me the unsurprising nuts, the unsurprising nuts make me choot. Who are you? I'm Owen's friend. Owen doesn't have any friends, he's fat and he's stupid.
SPEAKER_01Oh my god, she's fucking great and that, and you just you understand why. She's like, please kill her, please kill Mama. Danny DeVito, Billy Crystal, uh, and Ramsey. Throw mama from the train. Go see it, folks. Or go rent it, folks, or just buy it and enjoy it and and and just watch it over and over again. Because I do. There you go. And then after uh actually it's the same year, 1985.
SPEAKER_07Do the chunk shuffle, everybody. Do the chunk shuffle one time.
SPEAKER_01Not me.
SPEAKER_02But uh I'm done doing the chunk shuffle for everybody and anybody. Thank you very much.
SPEAKER_01Chunk doesn't do it anymore. The guy's a lanky, skinny guy. Did you know the quick little uh thing? Yes, uh, the actor who plays Chunk, he uh uh lanked out, got real skinny, uh, and people stopped giving him roles because they just wanted fat chunk. So he had some hard times. And he stayed in touch with Richard Donner. Every and everybody at that that cast stayed in touch with Richard Donner. And he he asked, he said, Hey man, I'm gonna be doing a uh admittance letter to college. And I wanted to be able to, you know, is is it okay if you go over it and and read it and maybe give me some advice? And Richard Donner said, Yes, go ahead, send it to me. And you know, he he read it and he talked about how it mentions how he was a kid growing up with his his sister and you know, single mom, Woodland Hills, and all this different stuff. And Richard Donner calls him up and said, Hey, you know, so um Lauren and I, we uh we read we read it, and first of all, just letting you know you're gonna be fine. You're gonna be absolutely fine, don't worry about it. You're gonna you know any any college is gonna accept you, you know, with this. But uh also want to let you know that uh Lauren and I got we're gonna we're gonna pay for your college. Nice. Hearing about that, the guy the guy was a downright decent human being. He cared about people, he grew bonds and he and he formed families through the the work that he did. And that's you know, that's a yeah, the sign of a of a good director and a good person, because if you can you can be a director that actually that people actually want to work with you and keep working with you, and that a director that you can actually enjoy their company not only while working with them, but outside of work. Yeah. That that right there, good man. And not only that, Kevin Feige, the all-knowing, all seeing, powerful eye of of of the MCU, Richard Donner gave him his first unpaid gig, gave him his first paid gig, gave him his first producing credits.
SPEAKER_07Wow.
SPEAKER_01In a role it basically gave him his start. Wow. And that's the reason why we have these movies that they are today, because he had the example of Richard Donner's quality and and character when it comes to working with people. And B, he said it it's that it's the template for the perfect origin story. Superman, the movie, is what they always go back to with every single one. They always watch that as a like an example of okay, here we go, here's our template, here's how we set things up. And it shows a lot, shows a hell of a lot that you know Superman is the reason why the Marvel movies are the way they are at this point, because of Richard Donner and Kevin Feige.
SPEAKER_07Nice, yeah. Same year as Goonies, we have a little film called Ladyhawk. Yes, one of my personal favorites, which I didn't know anything about until you were like, Hey, have you seen Ladyhawk? And I'm like, Yeah, I mean, I've seen a lady with a hawk. But um, yay. That's the source of my humor this morning, everybody. Ah, waking up. Um, Ladyhawk, starring Matthew Broderick and Michelle Pfeiffer and Rucker Hauer. Nice little fun fantasy film.
SPEAKER_01Yes.
SPEAKER_07I made the joke to you. I'll I'll tell to say it here. Just just Matthew Broderick, basically being fair as Bueller, but in a in a fantasy epic. But knocking out a little parkour, running away, getting into shenanigans, and stumbles into this couple.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yes. Well, I'm gonna say spoilers ahead. Oh, for sure. But when it comes to to this this movie, we are going to do a little bit of spoiling, and if you haven't seen it, you know, watch it so that way it's not spoiled for you, and then come back and listen to this. Because it's a story that you don't want the twist spoiled for you at the beginning or slash middle. But it's it's fun. Rudger Hauer is great. Uh Michelle Pfeiffer, I believe she was about 30 or 31 when she did that role, looking smoking hot as always. And good old Matthew Project, Ferris Bueller. I don't know if he had done Ferris Bueller or not before that, but guy was great. Just everything he did was great.
SPEAKER_07It was constant conversations of talking to God. Yes. Lord, it's kind of almost like kind of narrates you through his uh what he's thinking as he's doing things. Lord? Right.
SPEAKER_01And at that point, probably the only thing that's keeping him sane, because he doesn't have anybody else to talk to, so he figured, okay, the best person I can talk to is, you know, I'll talk to God. I have my faith so that way I'm never alone. I can always talk to him. And it just shows, you know, how much of a I wouldn't say a hypocrite when it comes to some of the things he does, but you know, like he said, it's like, if you get me out of this, I promise I will never steal another cent again or another uh coin or but I'll never pick pocket, I'll never pick pocket again. And then he he does, and he goes, I I I know that I had just said what I had said, but we both also know how weak willed I am. And yeah.
SPEAKER_07So it looks like he had he had already done war games. Okay, and so he had Ladyhawk, and then Ferris Bueller came out the next year in 86, if Ladyhawk came out in 85, so there you go. Yeah, and his star was on the rise then.
SPEAKER_01Yes. So yeah, he wasn't actually even supposed to have that role. Uh I guess originally it was supposed to be for Sean Penn. Yes. And he was not able to do it. Yes. And the role of of the bishop, which is very interesting, the uh the actor who was in Jumping Jack Flash and it's John Wood. John Wood, I almost said James Wood. John Wood. Uh John Wood he was it was originally supposed to go to Mick Jagger, and Fox said no. I could not, and and I could not imagine at the same time, I could perfectly imagine Mick Jagger doing that role. It just would not be uh not be the same.
SPEAKER_07You know what's funny? In a in a nice little kind of like things coming full circle. You talk about Sean Penn, you missed a gym, for who also was considered for the role. Dustin Hoffman. Jesus. I mean, I can see that, but the role of the pickpock was offered to Sean Penn and then Dustin Hoffman before Donner decided to go with Matthew Broderick. Wow. Yeah. And then uh Kurt Russell uh was originally going to play um Navarre. Uh the Captain of the Guard, Navarra, but I guess he pulled out during rehearsals, and it's like you told me it's 'cause he missed Goldie.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yeah, that's that's what uh Lauren uh Lauren Schollardon Lauren Schollerdonner said, his wife and partner in in in pretty much all these movies since Lady Hawk. She had brought him Richard Donner on for the movie, and about two weeks into pre-production and everything like that, she had gotten a divorce with her husband, and and that had made things uh a little hard later on into production and everything. She ended up moving into this big house that Richard Donner it was living in to uh film it. And then they ended up just as she said, he ended up pouncing and and and here we are 34 years later, and that was oh, that was about five, six years ago, maybe, maybe more, that they did that Academy, I guess tribute to Richard Donner. So yeah, they had met on the set and partners in crime. Nice.
SPEAKER_07But uh one thing I will say about Lady Hawk, it it it great pacing in the beginning, just seems like it's like boom, Matthew Matthew Brodock's in this, boom, now he's in this, boom, just a lot of goes. It does get a little, maybe a little slow towards the middle, but I promise it does pick up at the end. And if anything, it's a beautifully shot movie. Um they pick great locations uh for a movie that only had 20 million dollars budget. They found some really great locations and shot in these real castles, and it just it's it's a great-looking fantasy film. Yes. Not a lot of people showed up to go see it, only made $18.4 million in the box office, Justin.
SPEAKER_01That's not good, especially probably the amount that they spent. I don't know if they were they're doubling the the the movies budget, you know, the way that they do now. The you know, whatever you make, you know, spend on the movies, what you're gonna spend on advertising. I don't know if they were doing that then, but not even making your money back and also doing advertising, whatever advertising they were doing back then, that's not good. So, but it got a it got a cult following at you know, not as big of a cult following as you know other movies, but it got a following afterwards. You know, or once it came to VHS, that's when it really started blowing up, as as did a lot of movies back then. Sure, sure, yeah. People would just skip it, and it's not one of those movies that lasted for like a year or change in the theaters. It just came out, didn't do well, left.
SPEAKER_07That's how my mom saw a lot of movies because you know, she, you know, wasn't wasn't going to go to the movies, but wasn't really interested. And then, you know, when especially when like, you know, back in the day, there used to be these places called video rental stores. Boys and girls, where you used to have to go and, you know, actually, you know, if you wanted to see some movies, you had to go and get in your car and drive to these places and actually walk through the aisles and pick the pick the the little cases up yourselves and go home and and watch them. There was no streaming. So and be kind rewind. You know, blockbuster video, not just a thing in a Marvel movie, but that was real. That used to be life. There used to be block my my mother and I used to have Blockbuster Fridays. That was kind of our thing when I was growing up. You know, let's go down to the video store, and that's how she found a lot of the gems.
SPEAKER_01So I just had a little flashback moment of waiting at the counter, kind of off to the side, watching every single person that would come and drop off a movie, asking if it's the movie that I was requesting at that point. Well, sure. You'd stick around for another half an hour going, Please let them bring it back, please let 'em bring it back. And they don't. Can you can you call it choose something else? Right.
SPEAKER_07Well, going from a movie that maybe didn't do that well in the box office, we can hit a series that actually did pretty well in box office's the Lethal Weapons series. Oh yeah. I'll just say right off the bat that first one, fifteen million dollar budget, a hundred and twenty point two million dollars in the box office. So absolute success. Still not too old for this shit, apparently.
SPEAKER_01No, no. They were gonna even make another one. That was part of the plan. Before he passed. Richard Donner and and uh yeah, Richard Donner, Mel Gibson, Danny Glover, Renee Russo, they were all back and they were ready to to start and and just get the script right and and get going. Unfortunately, that didn't happen.
SPEAKER_07I know you've mentioned you you you think Lethal Weapon 5 directed by Mel Gibson, but do you think if if Richard if Richard Donner's not if you think of Richard Donner's an honor, I think Mel still does it or I don't know.
SPEAKER_01Because Richard Donner was the you know was the pin that held the whole thing together. So if if Mel Gibson's up to it, he worked with him enough. He did six films with Richard Donner. He did all four Lethal Weapons, he did Maverick, and he did Conspiracy Theory.
SPEAKER_07So he knows his directing, he knows his humor, he knows he's directed some he's he's directed films, so he knows what he's doing.
SPEAKER_01Oh Mel Gibson, absolutely he's done quite a bit of films, and so he knows you know the the art of directing. Correct. But he he also knows the the style of directing that that Richard Donner had. Correct. And also the timing uh that Richard Donner would want, the comedy, the levels of emotions and all that for certain scenes.
SPEAKER_07Yes.
SPEAKER_01So when it comes to that, I believe that you know he probably will uh uh do a good job if he does uh end up directing that movie. I think if anybody were to do it, yeah, he would be the guy to do it. So yeah, Lethal Weapons. So we had Lethal Weapon 1, Lethal Weapon 2 was great, and introduced introduced Leo Getz. Joe Pesci. Yep, wonderful Joe Pesci is Leo Getz. Whatever you need, Leo Getz. Get it. Uh so and and also just you know, a couple of the best villains when it comes to the Lethal Weapon movies with the uh the South African uh diplomats.
SPEAKER_02Diplomatic community just been revoked.
SPEAKER_01Raj. Raj, what happened? Did you what happened to the bad guys? Did you get them? They've been decaffeinated. Yeah.
SPEAKER_06You you you you don't want to go to South Africa. Well, why not? But well, because you're black. He is you you are like they just discovered oh, oh yeah.
SPEAKER_01Of course I'm black.
SPEAKER_05That's why I want to go. Free South Africa, dumb son of a bitch. Dumb son of a bitch.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, man. Love it. And then uh go on to Lethal Weapon 3. Not the best villain, but it's still uh a good uh Movie overall. I enjoyed it.
SPEAKER_07Brought us uh Renee Russo's character.
SPEAKER_01Yes. Yes. A uh girlfriend slash love interest that uh actually uh does not die. Right. So, you know. Good for him. He was having a bad run there. Exactly. You know Lorna Cole. That's right. Lorna Cole. Yeah, yeah. Another movie I remember seeing in the theaters. And and that movie also was one of the few movies that had an end credit scene back when we weren't ingrained and and taught to stay in the seats because you might see something else once all the credits are gone. Everybody does that now for every movie.
SPEAKER_07Even for movies where you're like, come on, everybody, you you can leave.
SPEAKER_01This is yeah, it's crazy. It's just a rom-com, guys. It's like you're gonna be alright, you know.
SPEAKER_03It's like, but maybe she'll come back from the dead. Uh no, she's dead.
SPEAKER_01Yeah. Remember, you know, it's okay. That's why that's the whole point of this. Right. Yeah, go cry, go cry. Then we had Lethal Weapon 4. Yes. Which gave us the villain Jet Lee.
SPEAKER_07Jet Lee. Yeah.
SPEAKER_01And we got to the point where Mel Gibson's character, Riggs, was too old for the shit, man. And was not able to pull things off. Riggs' character was supposed to be about 50 at the time. So he was uh uh just turning 40. So, you know, that's acting. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07And we also got Detective Lee Butters. Good old Chris Rock. We get this really great uh scene from Joe Peggy.
SPEAKER_06Uh, so uh who's the perp? Oh, I'm a perp. Well, you see the black man in the back of a car, all of a sudden thinks it's a perp. You see the badge, check out the gun.
SPEAKER_07Chris Rock is to go fool Chris Rock on Joe Peggy.
SPEAKER_03Just calm down, Joe K. You know, I'm juice didn't get into it very well either, you know.
SPEAKER_05Uh somebody called my phone from Afghanistan. Uh, I had to do on a road phone. Oh, I messed up. Hang up, I gotta dial again.
SPEAKER_01Yes, yes. Hello. Uh Leo Getz, private investigator. Yes. I was wondering if you could investigate my privates.
SPEAKER_07I love that. Part at the end where their Murtal's like, oh, they're looking for they're looking for his kids' babies. Murtal, no, butters. You better not show me no Murtal baby.
SPEAKER_01Yeah, man. I uh I will quickly say if they do do a a Lethal Weapon 5 and they are trying to cast Riggs's son, here's the free idea, folks. Just cast Tom Holland as as the continuation of Riggs. If anybody hates that idea, that's okay. You can come up with a better one. But uh until then, cast Tom Holland as as as Riggs, Martin Riggs Jr. or whatever the hell you want to name him. It would work. I'm all for it. That's right. Cool. So we had all four of the Lethal Weapons, and after that, he did some other movies. Maverick. He did a lot of movies that I I I really did not know that he he directed.
SPEAKER_07Myself as well. I've been a Richard Donner fan a whole the whole time, apparently. I have a couple, and we'll probably have some on the well, we'll probably have some that might cross, but just I'll just throw out a couple. This isn't any in any kind of order. I'm just throwing it out there. We mentioned the Omen. There was the toy, Richard Pryor, Scrooged, Radio Flyer, Scrooge, and Assassins, Assassins, Conspiracy Theory, and 16 Blocks. And then I also did I also did not know he was a producer on The Lost Boys.
SPEAKER_01Yep, he was gonna direct that, but then he ended up doing, I believe, uh it might have actually, I think it was Lethal Weapon that he ended up doing instead of Lost Boys was in 87. Okay, so then it was uh he was filming Lethal Weapon.
SPEAKER_07Yep, yep.
SPEAKER_01Yeah.
SPEAKER_07Yeah.
SPEAKER_01So he was producing that while directing Lethal Weapon.
SPEAKER_07Executive producer on all f all of the free willies, but you know, the first one because that's the one we like.
SPEAKER_01Which in Europe, when you say Willie, and you also say uh free willy, uh, that means uh whipping out your Johnson. So when the movie was coming out and they were making fun of the fact that it was called Free Willy, the studios came to him and said maybe we should change the title. And Richard Donner said, No, absolutely not. This is free advertising. Perfect. So yeah, he he said no and and and they kept it.
SPEAKER_07Fantastic. So yeah, all those free Willie movies. Tales from the Crip. He though he actually got involved in the movies, got involved in all three of the movies, including uh Tales from the Crip ritual, which has the one of the weirdest things the Crip Keeper ever says, where he's chilling in Jamaica and he's just he has dreadlocks and he's there for the eye-popping honeys.
SPEAKER_01I did not see that one. Oh boy.
SPEAKER_07And Mordello and and uh the other one, but I just didn't see wow, okay. Any given Sunday, X-Men and X-Men Origins Wolverine, executive producer.
SPEAKER_01So yes, yes. Uh Lauren Scheller Donner was, I believe, uh uh producer on pretty much both of those. Nice. He also did uh one with Paul Walker, Timeline.
SPEAKER_07Yeah, okay.
unknownOkay.
SPEAKER_01He directed and produced that one. Yep, cool. Yeah, the guy has done a lot. Richard Donner. And it he's affected us a lot.
SPEAKER_07And unfortunately, we lost Richard Donner this year, age of 91, but it's a good run. Borrowing from Kevin Smith, uh, because I really like the saying, he had a had a whole bucket of win.
SPEAKER_01Sure did.
SPEAKER_07And he definitely left his impression in Hollywood and in a lot of people's hearts and minds. And I think that his legacy will definitely live on through his works, because he's inspired uh a lot.
SPEAKER_01Yes. So heart goes out to the family, anybody who knew him, anybody who he called family, anybody that called him family, you know, our condolences. Yes. And uh and and then to him, thank you for everything you did.
SPEAKER_07Thanks a bunch, man.
SPEAKER_01Really. Without you, we wouldn't we wouldn't have had what we had, and I'm pretty sure without him we wouldn't have had the Superman theme that we had. Because I don't know if John Williams would have signed on had Richard Donner not been on or whatever it was that convinced him to do it.
SPEAKER_06Superman.
SPEAKER_01Without him, we wouldn't have gotten a lot of the movies that have had a big impact on us growing up and or uh to this day. So thank you for that. Indeed. Yeah.
SPEAKER_07And folks, you've heard us talk about a lot of these works. Go ahead and check some of them out. Check some of these movies out and get absolutely if you haven't seen any of the movies we've mentioned, go ahead and check a couple of them out. If you have seen some of the movies we mentioned, go ahead and watch them again and just kind of fall back in love with Richard Donner and his work and yeah. Have yourself a good time. And yeah, uh uh again, thank you, thank you very much, Richard Donner. You you will be missed. Absolutely.
SPEAKER_01Well, getting to it, man. I know that you have to go to work. It's it's getting to that time.
SPEAKER_07That's cool. But uh so what we what we can do is we can very quickly just let the people know we can be reached on various platforms. We have the matinee review at Gmail. There's also the Facebook page, we're on buzzsprout.com, Apple Podcasts, we're on Spotify, and I am gonna try to do my due diligence to hopefully before the end of this week get us a little bit of a Twitter page. SPEAKER_07And also, real quick, don't forget, you're looking for some good barbecue or something like that, make sure you're happy. Chantan.

Well, come on down to chantams. We got everything you need. That's right, we got barbecue. That's right. And what else do we have? We have everything you need. We got it all covered in garlic. SPEAKER_01Sawdust on the ground.
SPEAKER_07Oh boy. We did it. We got one in. We'll do a better one. That's okay. We got one in. That just made my day.
SPEAKER_01All right. Good, great times. All right, folks. Well, next f uh next week. Yes. Next week, we're gonna be talking either Masters of the Universe or the Universe. There's a possibility we might be talking about some other things, but I think Masters of the Universe is probably what we're gonna be talking about.
SPEAKER_08Cool.
SPEAKER_01I'm definitely next week. So uh if you haven't watched it, give it a gander. It's on Netflix. It's a lot shorter than I thought it was gonna be, but we'll get into it. I was never really a He-Man fan, and Kevin Smith, good job. You've made me a He-Man fan.
SPEAKER_07I I was never uh a He-Man fan, but I have been a Kevin Smith fan for a long time. So when I heard that he was developing this, especially he was doing it with Mark Bernard, and I was like, okay, so here we go. This this will be this this this is it. This will be good.
SPEAKER_01They killed it. Nice, like literally, they killed it. I have not seen it yet, so this will be great. And and no spoilers, because they killed it. Cool, they fucking killed it. Wonderful. Oh my god. I I will watch that again. Uh, when they bring that out on Blu-ray, I'm buying it. Very simple.
SPEAKER_07That's what's up.
SPEAKER_01So, yeah. High praise. All right, folks. Well, thank you for uh listening. Whoever's listening, if anyone's listening, we will talk to you next week, and we will keep talking even if you're not listening.
SPEAKER_07We'll just keep shouting into the void. That's what we do. I need to see, I need to I need to talk to somebody. Yeah, especially in these times. That's right. The void is our friend. Can you be my friend too? And thank you for for doing this with me, my man. I don't I don't think I don't thank you, but I I should, you know, it's like, hey, thank you for going on this journey with me. It's nice. Couldn't think of a better co-host. There you go. That's right, man. I just I guess I just miss my friend.
SPEAKER_01Well, hey, you know, we'll we will see each other again. For sure. All right, everybody.
