Getting lost is one thing. Realizing you are alone, unsure which direction is safe, and too far in to pretend it is fine is something else. Pastor Angus opens with a seventh-grade Boy Scouts story where one wrong turn at a fork turns a hike into panic, and then flips it into a powerful metaphor for Christian life: we can start out walking with Jesus, but if we drift from the group and stop listening, we end up off trail fast.

From there, we dig into walking in the Spirit through Galatians 5, including the hard truth that accepting Christ does not instantly erase old habits, triggers, or patterns. We talk about the works of the flesh, why “just don’t do it” rarely lasts, and why transformation is more than behavior modification. One of the most helpful moments is unpacking conviction vs condemnation: conviction is Holy Spirit pointing to what He wants to heal, while condemnation tries to shut you down with shame.

We also get practical with spiritual growth habits that build a real relationship with Holy Spirit: getting in the Word, praying as a dialogue, learning to listen in the quiet, and what it can mean to pray in the Spirit when you do not even know what to ask. Pastor Angus uses a simple light-switch picture to explain spiritual power: God’s power is present, but we still choose whether we live “on” or “off” in everyday pressure.

Finally, we clarify baptism in the Holy Spirit as empowerment for witness and daily living, and we hold space for a clear invitation to receive Jesus and step onto a new path with a new destination. If this encouraged you, subscribe, share it with a friend who feels off trail, and leave a review so more people can find it.

Lost On A Scout Trail

Angus MacLeod

So when I was in about seventh going into eighth grade, I was on a campo. I was in Boy Scouts, and there was about 35 of us, and it was a week-long campout. And if you've ever spent time with 35 boys from the age of fourth grade to junior to seniors, you know that at some point you need some quiet. And that had happened. We were on about day three of our trip. We were doing a prep uh hike in order to go on a 50-mile, and so we were doing a 25-mile hike. And um my scoutmaster had just about had it with all of the conversations. And so what he did was he, before we got on the trail, once we got um everything packed up, he spaced us out. And so what he would do is he'd stop us in line and say, Okay, now you go. And he'd wait until you almost couldn't see the boy in front of you. And he said, I want you to enjoy nature. Now, as an adult, I know that he wanted to enjoy the silence. So we start off, and and I see the boys in front of me. And now I was kind of the hinge between the older scouts and the younger scouts, and so I was right there. And I'll tell you, I wasn't quite fast enough to keep up with all the high school kids. And so as we were walking, we got to a point where I couldn't see them anymore, which was fine because the trail was straight, so just stay on the trail, right? Well, then I came to a fork in the road. There was a sign, I called ahead, nobody heard me. And by that point, because I was trying to keep up with the older boys, I'd lost everybody behind me. So now I'm alone and I have to make a choice: right or left. And watching Looney Tunes, I knew you should have made a right turn at Albuquerque, so I made a right hand turn and and I went right. And I walked, and I walked, and I walked, and eventually I realized I I haven't seen or heard anybody in quite a while. So I stopped, I looked around, I waited for a few minutes because I didn't want to go back and then have to go forward again. So I just waited till maybe the guys behind me would catch up, and nobody came. And after waiting for what seemed like forever, I started to walk back the other direction that I had come from. The longer I walked, the more I realized there's nobody coming. And in back in that day, my cell phone was a whistle. So I couldn't call anybody, I didn't have GPS. You know, as somebody who's sponsored, you just ride in the back of the car. You don't know where you're going, you go where they take you. I was on a trail, they said walk. I walked, and now I found myself in the middle of nowhere. And I had climbed up, and now I was by myself. Now I knew I had enough food for about two more days. But what happens after that? And then the reality of my situation started to set in. I got so nervous because I'm in seventh grade, and by this point, like I know now that I can go back to that uh that fork in the road and I can go left. What happens if it forks again? And so I got I got really nervous. I sat down for a few minutes and I wasn't walking with the Lord, so um, so I didn't know exactly how to pray, but it went something like this: God, if you get me out of this, I promise. And I started to make all sorts of promises and bargains with God, and um and I I felt the full weight of being lost and not knowing how to get myself out of this situation. And I started to get really, really scared. And so then I just decided, you know what, I'm gonna at least go back to the fork in the road because maybe they'll come back to the fork in the road too, and just assume that I went off the other direction. And so that's what I did. I started to walk back, and the longer I walked, the more panicked my pace became, and I started to walk really fast. Once I got about halfway down of where I had climbed, I saw my scoutmaster coming. And he had the exact same panic look in his face that I did. Because he was responsible for me. And he walked up and we just kind of looked at each other like, oh, thank God, there you are. And he goes, Angus, where were you? I said, Well, I I didn't, I I lost the other guys, and so I just I went this way. He goes, Dude, you were supposed to go left. I said, but I didn't know that. I didn't know what trail we were supposed to be hiking. So from that point on, just so you know, my scoutmaster always told us what trail we were supposed to be on. But I was really thankful to see him. We uh we started to walk back, we went back to the fork, and then uh we we got uh we continued to walk, and then we arrived at the campsite. It was so amazing because the camp was already set up, and there were guys, they were kind of looking around, like, well, maybe he's out this way, maybe he's out that way. And so they were just they were looking for me, kind of, but you know, with a bunch of boys, the scoutmaster had said, You stay here, I'll go look. You guys set up camp. So it was kind of nice because by the time I got there, most of the camp was set up. And as I as I arrived at camp and and felt that security of being around the other people that I knew I was supposed to be with, the fear went away. In fact, I got an extra patch because everybody went 25 miles, but I went 26. And so when we uh, you know, so that went towards my 50-mile thing, and it was kind of nice because I I had something that other people didn't. But that experience of walking by myself, being lost, I had no idea in that moment that the Lord would use that story years later as a metaphor for walking in the spirit, and so that's what we're going to be talking about today.

A Journey With Jesus

Speaker 1

If we haven't met, my name's Pastor Angus. I'm the family pastor here at Cornerstone, and we are so thankful that you're here with us today. If this is your first time with us, we want you to know that we see ourselves as a people on a journey with Jesus. We're walking with him. Stay close because if you don't, you might get lost. That's why we use this picture, is because what it does is it acknowledges that none of us have arrived. None of us are perfect, we all fall short, but we as long as we stay on the path with Jesus, everything will eventually be alright. And so here at Cornerstone, our goal, our heart is to be more like Jesus as we love God, make disciples, and reach the world. And I want to encourage you that one of the ways that you do that, just um in loving God, making disciples, and reaching the world, just coming on Sunday is great. But it's this is a very one-sided relationship right here. Me talking to you and you listening. In our life groups, that's where we go to be able to have that back and forth. That's where you go to learn things, to connect with people, to see how others do this life. And that was what I needed when I first started coming to Cornerstone was I I grew up in a house that wasn't like what I have now as a house. And that was because we just have a different relationship with the Lord. And I learned those things in our life groups here. So if you're not connected with a life group, get connected. It it makes all the difference in the world. So today I get to continue uh in uh our series on Pentecost, which I'm very excited about. This is the first time I've gotten to speak specifically on Holy Spirit uh in a main service, and so I'm very thankful that I have the opportunity to do that. In the previous weeks, we've talked about the freedom of Holy Spirit. Now, I'll tell you, I I grew up in uh the Episcopal Church and they they called it the Holy Ghost. Um, and we refer to Holy Spirit as the Holy Spirit. But just so you know, one thing that that I have been doing lately in my life, because calling him the Holy Spirit is kind of like saying the Pastor J, the Annie, the Quinn. And so I've really tried to make my relationship with him more personal by just calling him Holy Spirit, because that's his name. It's also his title, but I find that as I as I pray to Holy Spirit, not the Holy Spirit, it makes it a much more personal thing to me. So I just wanted to share that because that's one thing that's really helped me is praying to Holy Spirit. So, anyway, we talked about the freedom that comes when you have Holy Spirit in your life, when you have Him helping and leading and guiding you. We also talked about the power and the strength that Holy Spirit gives to you. The power that makes it possible for you to walk through this life and live it according to what Jesus has called us to do. So, today my question is: are you walking with the Spirit? Today we're talking about how we want to walk daily with the Holy Spirit. You see, on that hike, on that hiking trip, I was walking with my scouts daily until I wasn't. And when I was by myself, that's when I got off into the middle of nowhere. Lord, I thank you so much for this opportunity to come and speak. Holy Spirit, I just ask that you would open our hearts, our minds, our ears, and our situations to what it is that you would have us hear. Lord, I have the shotgun blast of information, but you're the sniper. And so, Lord, I just pray that everybody would hear exactly what it is that they need to hear, knowing that it's not me that's speaking it, it's you. Holy Spirit, take this message in the mighty name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

Flesh Vs Spirit In Galatians

Speaker 1

So in Galatians, we get some uh we get some direction on the way we should go. And it says in Galatians 5, 16 and 17, but I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not gratify the desires of the flesh. For the desires of the flesh against the spirit, they are opposed to each other to keep you from doing the things you want to do. Now, anybody who's walked with Jesus for any bit of time will tell you that just because you accepted Christ doesn't mean that after that it's all great. It doesn't mean that everything changes. As soon as you sit pray that prayer and invite him into your heart, that doesn't mean everything changes. What changes is your destination. Now we have to walk and figure out how to get to that destination. Old habits and old patterns still exist, they don't just disappear. Sometimes they do. Sometimes the Lord will take things from you and praise God when He does. But that's not everybody's story. That wasn't always my story. When I asked the Lord to take the foul language for me, he took that. Now, I I'm not saying that I'm perfect and I don't slip up every once in a while with the things I say, but that was one of the easiest things. I I said my first swear word in first grade. And I my mouth just got worse and worse. But when I became a parent, I said, Lord, I need you to take this from me because I don't want my kids to sound like I do. And he took it from me. But there were other things that I had to work a lot harder on to get it out of my life. It says, now the works of the flesh are evident. These are the works of the flesh. Sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. So, to know if you're walking in the flesh or walking in the spirit, if you're walking in the flesh, you may recognize some of these in your behavior. In fact, this week uh I was I was helping to hang some TVs here, and and as a result, I had to patch some walls, and I just started to laugh because I realized, you know, about the only good thing that comes from the fact that you had an anger issue is you know how to repair walls. And so I just started to laugh and I told Pastor J, I said, you know what? I finally am benefiting in one way from that fact. Because I know how to make, I know how to patch this up. You see, I thought when I became a Christfaller that it was about behavior modification. Just don't do it. The problem is behavior modification is very hard to sustain. If you've been swearing, if you've been drinking, if you've been doing, you name it, whatever it is, for your for a good portion of your life, one prayer to accept Christ doesn't mean that it's not going to be hard to quit whatever it is. And so there were so many times that I just thought, you know what, if I if I can just make it one day, cool, if I can make it two days, but see, the enemy knows you, he knows your patterns, most importantly, he knows your triggers. And so once you get tired, that's when the trigger sets off. And you fall back into your own ways because you've been doing it in your own strength. And there's a whole section of um of bookstores dedicated to how to change behavior. It's called the self-help section. But the problem with the self-help section is it's self-help. Now, there are some books that are that are spirit-filled and that have to do with the Lord, but in great majority, it's giving you directions on how you can solve your problem. And the Lord doesn't want that. Because when you solve your problem, it doesn't require a partnership, it doesn't require relationship. So we can look to Paul as an example because it says in 1 Timothy 1, 13 through 16, though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent, but I received mercy. Jesus Christ came into the world to save sinners, of whom I'm the foremost. You see, Paul started off as Saul. He was a Pharisee, he knew how to follow rules. But who did Jesus have some of the biggest problems with? The rule followers. Because they followed the rules based on the letter of the law, not the spirit of the law, not the heart of the law. And so, even though Paul was good at following those laws, he still persecuted Christians and he recognized that he was one of the biggest sinners of them all. And he even talks about how in Romans how he did what he didn't want to do. So I do not understand what I do. For what I want to do, I do not. Anybody been there? I don't want to do this, but I do. And if I do what I do not want to do, I agree that the law is good. And it is no longer I myself who do it, but sin living in me. So how many of you think you're a good person? You just act poorly sometimes. That's kind of what he's saying is I'm I'm a I'm good, but I don't do good. I know I felt like Paul a lot. We are called to live a life that's different. It says in Romans 8, in order that the righteousness requirement requirement of the law might be fully met in us who do not live according to the flesh, but according to the spirit. See, and that's how he did it. He didn't go to the self-help section of Barnes and Noble, he went to the school of the Spirit. He allowed himself to walk with Holy Spirit so that he could make those changes. So the question is, how do I walk in the spirit?

Practical Ways To Walk Daily

Speaker 1

Because if you've walked your whole life one direction, how do you know that the new direction you choose is right? You don't know. Here's some practical steps. First, get in the word. You have to get in the word and find out what it is God has said so that you know what he's saying. Being sober-minded was one of those scriptures that whenever I was here early on, and Pastor Rich would speak about being sober-minded, man, I felt the conviction. Just like you might have felt the conviction when we talked about some of those earlier things, when it's the fruit of the flesh. Now, I want you to understand, Pastor Jay talked about this last week. There's a difference between conviction and condemnation. When you read scripture, when you hear these things that go against your normal behavior, and you get that little twinge inside you, understand that not everybody hears that. Nobody else knows that you're getting that twinge. It's just you because that is the power of the Holy Spirit speaking to you, saying, Hey, this is something in you that I want to change. He's not saying, This is in you, and now you're done. And I'm so thankful for that. The next way is through prayer. The way you grow a relationship is by spending time. If my wife and I didn't talk, how close is our relationship going to be? Prayer is also not a monologue. How close are we getting right now as I'm speaking to you, but you don't get to reciprocate? That that relationship can only go so far. And so, what we have to understand is that prayer is a dialogue, not a monologue. And so we can absolutely take our cares, we can take our concerns, we can take all of that stuff to our praises and thanksgiving, especially. We can take all those things to the Lord, but then we need to shut our mouth. I think I've heard that before here somewhere. Just shut your mouth and listen to what the Lord has to say to you. What does he have to say about your situation? But sometimes we don't know how to pray. And that's where praying in the Spirit comes in. That's where the baptism of the Spirit comes in, and we'll talk about that in a few minutes. But it says, in the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. So if you've ever heard somebody who's praying and it it sounds like mumbling or garbled language, whatever it is, that's praying in the Spirit. And what that is, is that's the Holy Spirit praying through you because he knows what you need. And and so this is one of the areas that I've really tried growing in because there are so many times that in my situation I have no idea how to get out of it. So I don't even know how to pray what to do to get out of it. And what if I'm praying the wrong prayers? Because I found out that I the reason I'm in ministry was because I found out I was praying the wrong prayers. And I didn't know that was possible, but it absolutely is. You can be praying against what God wants for your life by saying, Lord, give me this job, instead of saying, Lord, your will be done. We solve we solve our problems through prayer in the way we want to see it, but when we pray by the Spirit, we allow the Lord to use our prayers with without this getting in the way. We also have to learn to listen. God talks to us, but he talks really quiet. And I don't know about you, but my life can get so loud with commitments and children and a spouse and just all of the things, traffic, all the things that are going on, that you can't hear what the Lord is saying. And so what we have to do is we have to quiet our minds, quiet our tongue, say, Lord, what would you say on this situation? Because we all know what our problems are, we just don't know how to fix them. And if you say, Lord, here's my problem, and you just keep rambling on about what it is, He can't minister to you. So we have to be quiet and listen. We have to be willing to look in the mirror and examine ourselves because it's sometimes it's not fun, but self examination is. Is so important because we need to look at ourselves, recognize what's wrong, and as soon as we do that, we can take that to the Lord so that He can help us fix it. And then you just have to ask the Lord, Am I going in the right direction? See, because every new situation, you've got two ways to go. You can go the old way, you can go the new way. And if you don't know which direction you're going, you gotta stop and go, hey, which way? Kind of like Frodo did in Lord of the Rings. But see, we have to understand that your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path, says Psalms 119. The directions that we need to go, that's a roadmap. We don't need a GPS, we need that for our life. Whether you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear a voice behind you saying, This is the way. Walk in it. And so we can see all of that.

Turning On God’s Power

Speaker 1

We also need to connect to the power of God. See, I was thinking about it, and we all have a choice when it comes to the Lord. We're kind of like a light switch. See, the power comes to the light switch, and that power is always there. It's just whether or not we turn it on. And so, in your situation, when you're in traffic, Lord, don't talk to me right now. Because I'm talking to people. In my finances, I really need the power of God. And the the reality is, in every situation that we have, we have the opportunity to either turn ourselves on to the power of God or turn it off. Because the power's always there. How are you positioned? Because I'll tell you, I've walked through this place without the lights on, and I could tell you where each bruise came from. There's one right here that after when I was taking the boxes for the TVs out, I hit that chair. You see, just because the lights are off doesn't mean everything around you has gone that your path has gotten clear. It's just whether or not you can see the obstacles. And so so many times we go, you know what? I can handle this on my own. And we just flip the switch off. And it's not until we run into something that we go, oh yeah, that's right. I need the Lord's power in this. And so I thought it was just, it was a simple demonstration, but it was something that really ministered to me. And so as I've been preparing, I just I thought all this week, am I asking the Lord for help or not? Am I allowing him to do his job so I can do my job? Because a light switch without any power does nothing. And so many of us walk through life before Christ, not having the power to do what it is that we need to do. So we have to get connected to the power of God. It says, But when you will receive power, but you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and all Judea and Samaria and to the ends of the earth. So again, the question is, are you walking in the Spirit?

Learning To Recognize Holy Spirit

Speaker 1

Now, I was like Pastor Jay, I was very analytical. I had a hard time, and just Annie didn't even know this until recently. When I first came to Cornerstone, I didn't understand what Holy Spirit was, who Holy Spirit was, the role of Holy Spirit. But what I did see was cameras, and uh, and so when I would come in here and Pastor would talk, I was I sat right back there, and when Pastor talked to me, every time he looked, I I thought he was talking directly to me. And I thought because of the combination of cameras and my wife calling in sometimes during the week to tell on me, and and the fact that all the songs lined up with the things that Pastor was saying, I was like, man, these people are just trying to manipulate me into Jesus. Because how, how, how could he know that that's what's going on in my life? And so for a long time it it I it it kind of kept me back a little bit because I thought, well, they're just watching me. Annie's calling in and telling on me. And then it was when people like Annie would come up and share, or and it actually was when our brother Charlie came up and he started to share a word, man, that just pierced my heart. And it because I had never met the man, but he spoke something so deep to my heart because Holy Spirit was speaking through him to me. And what ended up happening in that moment is I was standing there going, You're not that important. I realized I wasn't that important that that the worship pastor and the lead pastor was recruiting other members of the congregation just to talk to me. That's how selfish I was. I thought it was all about me. And then I realized, no, it's it's about Holy Spirit trying to draw me in. And once I accepted that, man, things got way easier. I became less, uh, I became less critical of what was going on in the church because I realized, man, there's something different here. It's not a collaboration of all these people just trying to manipulate me into going the right direction. It was a bunch of people responding and being the audible voice of God for me because I wasn't listening. And so that's what the people here did. And I'm so thankful for all of those who've come before me who are responsive to the Holy Spirit, who will say exactly what it is that he's saying to them so that I can hear.

Baptism In The Holy Spirit

Speaker 1

We just have to be ready to listen. So I'm gonna ask the worship team if you would come. And in a moment, we're gonna invite you to come up and pray to be baptized in the Holy Spirit. Now, the baptism of the Holy Spirit is different than a believer's baptism when we when we um submerge you in the tank over here. When we submerge you in the tank, that's a declaration that you are dying to yourself, dying to sin, and being born again. It's it's basically an outward symbol that I'm switching teams. I now serve the Lord. What the baptism of the Holy Spirit is, is turning the switch on. It's going from this to this and saying, all right, now that I know I'm connected to you, I'm gonna allow you to operate in and through me. So if you've been baptized, that's great. If you haven't been baptized in the spirit, there is something different that happens. Because what you're doing is you're saying, Lord, I am willing to allow you to do something new and more in my life. I want to connect with you in a deeper level. And we all say, God, use me, use me. Well, this is how God can use you by receiving his spirit and his empowerment to go out and be used of the Lord.

Saying Yes To Jesus

Speaker 1

But maybe you haven't been baptized, maybe you haven't been baptized in the Holy Spirit, maybe you still just need to accept Jesus. So my question is have you embraced Jesus? We look to the cross, which was a symbol of death and intimidation. That's how it was viewed by the Roman world, by the people in Jesus' day. But we see the symbol as a symbol of freedom, as a symbol of life. And it's only when we come to the cross at the foot of Jesus that we can know that our path is now different, that our destination has changed. And so I'm gonna ask if everybody would stand with me. It says in Romans 10, verses 9 and 10, because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believed in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes and is justified, and with the mouth one confesses and is saved. See, it's a simple process to come into relationship with Jesus with Jesus. It's a difficult journey. But he gives us the power to be able to walk that journey. And so if that's you and you're here today and you recognize I want to start this brand new journey, I want to change my path, I want to change my destination, with nobody looking around, everybody's head bowed, and your eyes closed. If you say, That's me, I need a new destination. I need to receive Jesus as my Lord and Savior, and I need to live a different life. Go ahead and raise your hand, pop it up, just so we know how to pray for you. And then we're all gonna play pray together. See that hand and that hand and that hand. And so now I'm gonna ask if everyone would just pray this prayer with me and welcome Jesus into your heart. Lord, thank you for loving me. Thank you for sending Jesus. I believe Jesus died on the cross for my sins. I believe he rose again. Forgive me of my sins. I surrender my life to you. In Christ's name. Amen. Amen. Friends, welcome to the family. We are so glad to have you. We are so thankful that you are gonna be walking this path with us. We promise not to let you get lost on the way. We'll come looking for you. But for everybody else and for all those who are here, as we open this altar, we invite you to come and be prayed with and for to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. We invite you to turn yourself on to the power of God and make yourself available. And so if you want specific prayer for the baptism of the Holy Spirit, when somebody comes up to pray for you, let them know that. And they'll pray with you. It's not about us who are praying with you, it's about Holy Spirit coming in and ministering to you. And so we just invite you to come and let the Lord do what the Lord wants to do. Holy Spirit, we thank you for being here. I thank you that even now you are tugging on people's hearts because you are calling them into the baptism of your spirit. And so, Lord, I just pray that we would all have the boldness and the courage to take that first step out. And Holy Spirit, I just ask that you come and do what only you can do, which is baptize with fire. And Lord, for those of us who are praying, I just pray that we would be led by your Spirit. That we would say what it is that you would have us say in the mighty name of Jesus Christ.

We have a lot of things happening this summer, and I want you to be a part so you can go on the app. But we really want to build up an amazing team for the Mercy House event, for a back to school event. So we need people to serve, and we also need you to give items. So if you need a look at that list, you can go online. Um you can get a hold of our team at the Mercy House, but it is gonna be amazing. We get to bless the community, and so it's our time just to give back, and so we'd love for you to be a part of that.

Weren't you blessed by the message from Pastor Angus today? I was too. Before we go, I want to pray this blessing over us.

Blessing And Sending Prayer

The Lord bless you and keep you. Lord, make his face to shine upon you and be gracious to you. Lord, lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace. Lord, I pray a blessing upon your church, your people. Lord, you empower us by your spirit to live your love out to those around us. Pray all this in the powerful name that is Jesus Christ. Amen. Amen. Know this. We love you very much here at Cornerstone. God bless you and have a great week.
